Morning Kickaround
*Tragedy in Liberia, where at least eight die at the Monrovia stadium during a World Cup qualifier with Gambia. The match ended 1-1. D.C. United's Francis Doe played the final 29 minutes. New England's Kenny Mansally was on the Gambia roster, but did not play.
*England defeated T&T, 3-0, in Port of Spain. Okay, no surprise there. But what about the underbelly? As prophet Johnny Drama says, there's always an underbelly. How about this: Jack Warner invites England for a friendly. England FA can't stop laughing. Then it occurs to the suits, they are going to need CONCACAF support for a successful 2018 World Cup bid. England reconsiders. Underbelly.
*U.S. defender Jonathan Spector might miss the Olympics.
*Admit it, you miss those D.C. United-Washington Freedom doubleheaders at RFK, don't you? Alas, they're back. One, anyway: June 22, following the DCU-San Jose match, the Freedom will face Richmond in a W-League exhibition.
*With the weekend off from league play, the Kansas City Wizards defeated Municipal of Guatemala, 2-0, in Bugs's favorite town. Ivan Trujillo scored twice in the first half.
*Crystal Palace USA suffered its first USL2 defeat after five victories, 3-0 at home to Charlotte, while Real Maryland (3-4) dropped a 3-0 decision at Harrisburg.
Later this morning, our weekly MLS review with the Good, the Bad and the Coyote Ugly. For now, I'll leave you with Australia downing Iraq, 1-0, in World Cup qualifying:

I assume the stadium situation here is going to be coyote ugly??

Good to see that game get played.

What happened in Liberia is so sad. What is being done about better organization and security in developing countries? Can we at least get a study about what improvements can be made?
Posted by: spectre | June 2, 2008 7:16 AM
OK, here's your study:
1. Don't allow a stadium to be filled beyond capacity.
2. Make tickets hard to counterfeit.
3. Limit access to the perimter of stadiums.
That will be $18,000,000 for the study. Thank you.

How come Jack Warner is not behind bars?
Posted by: DirtyHarry | June 2, 2008 7:37 AM
I hate asking this in a thread that includes such somber discussion as the Liberia tragedy, but both items are in the same post, so:
Did anyone watch the T&T match? Comparisons to the US-England game would be welcome -- specifically, whether England managed to make T&T look as lacksadaisical as it did the USMNT.
Posted by: Tom | June 2, 2008 7:51 AM
So, Goff, why the "alas" regarding the doubleheader? The Freedom are fun to watch, successful and have a tremendous, stable coaching staff.
Posted by: LD | June 2, 2008 7:57 AM
The best part of that doubleheader will be the parking lots staying open for the postgame Barra tailgate.
Posted by: HughHefner | June 2, 2008 8:27 AM
And by CONCACAF, you really just mean Jack Warner.
Posted by: Kim | June 2, 2008 8:32 AM
@LD: Thanks for posting, Coach Gabarra.
Posted by: Ron | June 2, 2008 9:18 AM
Geez, LD, lighten up.
Posted by: Goff | June 2, 2008 9:27 AM
shouldn't Jack Warner be championing a bid from his own confederation instead of trying to get some bribes from the Brits?

Our dollar in weak, our economy is in recession (maybe not technically), so Warner has little use for us.
The T&T roster listed Makan Hislop as a defender. Does anyone know if there's a relationship with Shaka? Or maybe I should ask what the relationship is (it's a small country).

Goff,
SOI is far to old to necessitate a pre-6AM wake up. Get some sleep...

Girls Vs Boys...
Hhmmmm...
Nice can o' worms.

In the United/Freedom double-header, there will be as many internationals in Freedom jerseys as in United (more if Moreno or Doe are on nat duty). And if recent form is any indication, the local women will play a more sound tactical game than the local men. If you're just looking to get hammered, there's a lot cheaper beer than RFK and you can watch on TV. If you want to watch good soccer, you might want to stick around after the two worst teams in MLS teams are done.

Thanks Steven for giving me some soccer news to wake up to--essentially you are my sports page down here in Wilmington, NC.
Looks like Spector is done for the Olympics as surgery seems imminent. What's really more important for him is that this set-back doesn't interrupt his progress at the club level--the kid is always on the verge of establishing himself as a regular when he gets injured.
I'd think we would now have to use one of the overage slots on Olympics for a defender if we weren't already considering it--the other U23 options at his position are limited.

@ Glenn
Agreed.
However, though I don't know Jack Warner personnaly, I summize from what I have read about him and the rare TV tidbits I've seen of him that there is such a thing as a wretched waste of space in the universe and it's the Jack Warners of the world that play the sub-atmoic particles that make such a phenomenon possible. You can thank the equally low FIFA brass for empowering such a disgusting entity.

@Old WNT Fan:
So the Washington Freedom are a better soccer team than DC United. Thanks for cluing us in.
Perhaps there should be promotion/relegation between the two leagues?
Posted by: Ron | June 2, 2008 10:32 AM
Australia-Iraq highlights...how much could an Iraqui keeper cost DCU?
Posted by: congguy | June 2, 2008 10:36 AM
What the heck is Washington Freedom?
Posted by: Alan | June 2, 2008 10:45 AM
Time stamps still screwy. Curses!
Wil this appear to have been posted before alan asking what the Freedom is?
Probably.

How can there still be a "Samuel K. Doe" Stadium in Liberia 18 years after his assassination? Surely he is not fondly remembered?
Posted by: stuck in 200 | June 2, 2008 11:00 AM
Colmes: In light of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa and magnified by yesterday's Liberian stadium tragedy . . .
. . is South Africa going to be safe enough to hold the world's greatest sporting event, soccer's World Cup?
Hannity: Soccer? Only Communists and Immigrants play soccer.
Plus, I only have 30 minutes to parade Barack's pastors through my Randolph Hearst machine ,. . in yellow, of course.

To answer my own question and for anyone else interested, the following is from Shaka's ESPN chat.
Shaka Hislop: (2:24 PM ET ) Yannic, I'm from Trinidad. The Hislops are originally from Tobago though, as is my cousin Makan who is starting today.
Posted by: I-270, Exit 1 | June 2, 2008 11:16 AM
And for anyone interested, Shaka Hislop is penning a weekly column/blog covering MLS for the UK's Guardian Online. His latest:

@ spectre
Coming from Sierra Leone and witnessing such tragedy at one time in my life (I believe we were hosting Cameroon after their impressive world cup display), these types of sad wastes of human life will continue to happen in Africa (and maybe other parts of the world) as long as disgustingly greedy organizers keep trying to pack small antiquated national stadiums to twice their capacity. It's all about making some cash. This is very sad news and FIFA needs to step in an stop this kind of nonsense.
