Morning Kickaround
It's still morning in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, so I get a pass, right? ;-)
*In the wake of last Wednesday's monsoon at Estadio RFK, D.C. United has proposed playing the make-up match with Houston on July 23, the day before the All-Star Game in Toronto. It would make a lot of sense: The teams are set to face each other four days earlier at RFK in a SuperLiga group match, so the Dynamo could stick around and save on transportation costs. As for a few potential D.C. and Houston players competing in a serious game the day before the always grueling All-Star Game...oh, never mind. The other rescheduling options are in early September before each side begins Champions League play. With those fixtures in mind, the teams and MLS will wait until after Wednesday's CL draw before ironing out the details of the make-up match.
*While the USA was holding Argentina to a 0-0 tie before more than 78,000 at Giants Stadium, bitter rival Mexico earned a 4-0 victory over Peru in front of 33,000-plus at Soldier Field.
*If you thought DCU's 2-1 victory over Chicago on Saturday night was wild (nine yellows, three reds, an added-time game-winner), check out the scoring summary for Sunday's reserve division match between the clubs:
CHI - Andy Herron 2'
CHI - Andy Herron (PK) 10'
CHI - Calen Carr 49'
DC - Franco Niell 52'
DC - Ryan Cordeiro 61'
DC - Rod Dyachenko 69'
DC - Marc Burch 72'
CHI - Brad North 79'
DC - Quavas Kirk 81'
*Congrats to Real Maryland defender Matthew Eby and his wife, who gave birth to their second child. To read my April 19 profile of Eby, who is deaf, click here. DCU's Fred is expected to become a father for the first time today.
Back later with the Good, Bad and Coyote Ugly from this past week's MLS action.....

Goff - how bad of a sign is it that Carvallo is not even playing in the reserve matches now?
Posted by: jpeace121 | June 9, 2008 2:24 PM
will robinson have to serve the same suspension for the make up game between DC and Houston?

FWIW, I'd say Carvallo not playing is a better sign than if he'd given up four goals...

Kasper told me not to read anything into it, just that the coaching staff wanted to give a full 90 to Thorpe, who didn't join the club full-time until recently.

I'd love for a referee SI colleague to give his take on the Dutch goal. If the Italian player is out of bounds, is he still considered when making an offside judgment?
Posted by: Joe Doc | June 9, 2008 3:14 PM
That is correct, Bart!
Posted by: Voyager | June 9, 2008 3:15 PM
Crazy thought, but why don't they just call the SL match between DC and Houston an official league match and be done with it?
Posted by: Lost in BA | June 9, 2008 3:16 PM
The Italians discover the risks of running the offside trap -- it depends opn the linesman getting the call right.
At least, the second goal was wonderful.
Who is the color announcer? I think he's among the best I've ever heard.
Posted by: FIsch Fry | June 9, 2008 3:18 PM
Give Payne a red card
Posted by: TheFans | June 9, 2008 3:19 PM
as long as the defender was in the field of play to begin with, then yes, it nullifies offsides. remember, players can't actually go 'out of bounds' only the ball can.
Posted by: joedoc | June 9, 2008 3:23 PM
Lost in BA: you can't combine the SL with the regular season, alas. among other things, you get four subs in SL, not three. also, who's going to make up the revenue loss?

Andy Gray, on-loan from Sky Sports to cover this tournament. By far one of the best decisions ESPN have made for coverage of this tournament.
Posted by: Red Devil | June 9, 2008 3:29 PM
oh, and forgot. from a simple financial/sponsor perspective, Telefutura owns the superliga rights, CSN would own the MLS league rights.

F Andy Gray. Can he stroke Italy any harder? He's talking like the Netherlands are a pub team. Buffon makes one save after yet another defensive lapse, and oh there's the turning point. What a knob.

Any way you can find out if the Boca Jrs. might be coming here for pre-season workouts/games? Press in Argentina are hinting at that.
Posted by: Question for Goff | June 9, 2008 3:40 PM
Too bad MLS couldn't have gotten Boca to come to the All-Star game...

Selling tickets for two games versus selling tickets for one game that counts for two. I don't think DCU's owners will have to think very long on this one if they even have a choice.

So at what point does Mgmt actually account for the dismal goalkeeping corps they brought on board?
If Carvallo is so bad/weak/out-of-it that he cannot possibly step in for the demonstrably bad/weak/out-of-it Wells, then they blew it.
The #1 they brought is - they admit - a failure.
The #1.5 they brought in to compete with #1 is also - they admit - a failure.
So unless they are competing to see who can suck most (or least), then Mgmt needs to start cutting and plucking.
There is no earthly way either of these porteros will carry their end of the load through the playoffs and into a Cup Final.
If Mgmt is serious about postseason play (CCC, SuperLiga, etc.) they better do something to ensure we have quality between the sticks.
Contracts are guaranteed as of July 1st, so they need to get cracking.
Posted by: Erick | June 9, 2008 3:51 PM
agreed Erick. I would expect to see Carvallo gone. Wells I could see them keeping until a suitable replacement can be found, then Wells goes to the reserves/bench.

Boca is definitely going to DC in August, and will be playing various teams in Venezuela and the US in July and August before heading to Europe and Argentina for the season start and some bizarre bogus tournament in Europe. What has not been officially announced by Boca is who they will play, but I think both Chivas US and the Mexican version are possible, as well as KC.

The good:
Luciano Emilio possibly hitting his hot streak?
DCU pulls out a road win at Chicago.
Beckham's return from international duty puts the Galaxy back on the winning track.
San Jose claims a road win.
Argentina 0-0 USA.
Non-soccer guy Bob Hunter saying how much he enjoyed sitting in the Crew's "Nordecke" supporters section, in Sunday's Dispatch.
The resurgent Houston Dynamo and Chivas USA.
Jozy Altidore's multi million dollar transfer to Spain.
The bad:
Columbus can't even buy a goal any more.
Severe weather in DC and Chicago.
Altidore's departure leaving the Red Bulls with one fewer scoring option (well, bad for the Red Bulls, good if you're not a RBNY fan).
The coyote ugly:
Red cards galore.

I was at the reserve match on Sunday. It was pretty obvious to everyone there that Thorpe was going to play the entire match. Carvallo was on the bench, but it seemed the staff wanted to see what James could provide the team.
And though it pains me to say it , Niell looked pretty good in the match. Fought Burch for MOTM honors
Posted by: brooksb6 | June 9, 2008 6:29 PM
SMACK is really just a bitter Celtic fan. (Andy Gray played for Rangers)
The fact is, Van Nistleroy WAS off-side, just barely though. The player off the pitch is not part of the play. Supposedly there's some little addendum to that rule, that if the player is off the pitch as a result of his own player pushing him off, then he's "on the goal line" for all intents and purposes... ridiculous, I agree.
However, I hate Forza Italia. They play an ugly brand of soccer, cheat more than a certain former-Metro coach, and I hear they steal candy from school-children.
Therefore, the non-call was a good call in my eyes. I'm happy to see the Italians get spanked.
Otherwise, Andy Gray is a brilliant color-commentator, and inspires quite a few laughs throughout matches.
