The Ocho
With the completion of group play today, the Euro field has been narrowed from 16 to eight teams.
Your quarterfinal matchups:
*Thursday: Portugal vs. Germany, 2:45 (ESPN)
*Friday: Croatia vs. Turkey, 2:45 (ESPN)
*Saturday: Netherlands vs. Russia, 2:45 (ESPN Classic ABC)
*Sunday: Spain vs. Italy, 2:45 (ESPN)
The first two winners will face each other in Wednesday's semifinal, the last two in Thursday's semifinal. With those pairings and potential matchups, I ask you.....

I predict it will be Portugal vs Croatia & Netherlands vs Spain with the final being Portugal vs Netherlands with Netherlands winning.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 18, 2008 6:25 PM
Hopefully we'll get the Portugal/Netherlands final we should have had in 2000...
Posted by: Eric B | June 18, 2008 6:29 PM
I'd rather have the final we should get in 2008.

That's a great move that Netherland v Russia game is on ABC on Saturday. Perfect perfect. Don't move back to Classic, that would be very shame. Dutch v Russia would be mouth watering game. It would a huge upset is Russia nocks out the Dutch.
Posted by: arlington4united | June 18, 2008 7:02 PM
As good as Holland has looked, and as good as Russia looked today, I picked Spain at the start. What sort of prognosticator would I be if I changed that now?
Besides, Netherlands better beware Gus Hiddink...How much does the U.S. have to pay to get him after the 2010 Cup?
Posted by: Fisch Fry | June 18, 2008 7:03 PM
Oh no but I will be attending DC United game....oh come on.

Has nothing to do with ABC. They would air whichever game was scheduled that day. It will be a great game though -- glad it will be available to everyone.

Thanks for the Saturday TV update!

I'm surprised Turkey has no votes. I wouldn't rule out any of these teams. Turkey is probably a better team than '04 Greece. Still, it's cool that the other 7 teams have received votes.
Posted by: Fisch Fry | June 18, 2008 7:09 PM
Interesting that everyone has changed their tune about Netherlands.
Russia looked pretty dangerous today though...Those kids sure can run.

=========================================
I believe Turkey has one vote. This software appears to truncate the percentages, rather than round them. Thus, the single vote for Turkey showed up as 1 percent until the total number of votes passed 100, when it showed up as 0 percent. This also explains why the percentages sum to around 96 percent.

For those of you who are recording these matches, I assume that the usual fight-to-the-death rules (120 minutes, then penalties) apply.
Posted by: tri-village | June 18, 2008 7:18 PM
My money's on the dutch, but the other finalist is coming out of the croatia-turkey matchup...I just don't feel like portugal or germany will be able to match their fire
Posted by: Skyler | June 18, 2008 7:26 PM
Oh I messed up the schedule but it's worse because Spain v Italy would be great too.
But ABC has to agree to show, although it's partnerd with ESPN but still nice to have on the local channel.
Posted by: arlington4united | June 18, 2008 8:15 PM
My heart is always with the Dutch. It was difficult to tell today whether Russia is really fast or that it was an illusion as the Swedes are old (which they are) and slow. Still Holland probably has too much attacking power and their defense has held up. Spain/Italy and Portugal/Germany should be interesting matches where anything can happen.

The Saturday match has always been scheduled for ABC according to my pre-tournament print out. So there was no moving involved.
I would imagine we will all be recording Sunday's match. No one at the stadium had better mention anything about that game and ruin the surprise!
I think the Germans will put up a good fight against Portugal tomorrow. Should be a very interesting match.

Very interesting to see the Netherlands that high. I checked back and they only got 11% of the vote on Goff's poll on June 5th.

¿«The Ocho»? I guess that means you're rooting for España?
Posted by: Luis Aragonés | June 18, 2008 9:08 PM
"The Vosem" should cover both Croatia and Russia.

Wow: Euro 2008 match on ABC.
Do they know that the US Women are not participating in this tournament?
I think they finally know how big the soccer audience for top level competition is in the US.

Spain-Turkey in the final, with the Turks' luck finally running out against Iker Casillas, who becomes a demi-god in Spain. Should be a good tune-up for Spain winning the whole thing in South Africa 2010, after which Iker is promoted to full-fledged God in Spain and has to move to a gated community in Greenland just to get away from the autograph seekers.
Posted by: Juan-John | June 18, 2008 10:01 PM
I believe the final is also on ABC...right after DCU v LA

@ Wow: Euro 2008 match on ABC.
Not once but two games. This is great. I knew the final is on ABC right after United v Galaxy game on ABC but Dutch v Russia is a treat one.
Posted by: td | June 18, 2008 10:23 PM
Yep, and once the NBC and CBS figure out the massive audunce worldwide drawn to this kind of games they will be fighting to get a shot into this market as well. Maybe they will not need to keep the tvs running whether someone is watching or not for regular US games.
Posted by: td | June 18, 2008 10:29 PM
That Glenn is why I don't know what to do with myself on the next two Sundays...
I could go to the United game and wear earplugs hoping some blackberry addict doesn't crap himself screaming @ the Spain/Italy result, and then watch the repeat @ 3 Am, or stay home, bring the bedroom tv into the living room and watch United/Quakes and Spain/Italy @ the same time, and maybe tune in again @ 11pm for the Comcast repeat with my full attention...
Either way my wife is probably going to be completely over me by Monday morning if not sooner.
Posted by: Dadryan | June 18, 2008 10:36 PM
Same deal with the next weekend.
You risk missing the Euro final by going to the BIG GAME.
Posted by: Dadryan | June 18, 2008 10:38 PM
I'm pulling for the Netherlands, if for nothing more than there very pro-wacky tobacky laws (or lack there of).
Puff puff give.
Posted by: Chief Clancy Wiggum | June 18, 2008 10:39 PM
What sucks is that I watched every match that mattered. I will miss the Quarters cause I'm going to my parents stupid 50th wedding anniversary party in Ohio.
Ah Love you mom and Dad...can't wait to see you while the quarters are being played.
Posted by: Harpo | June 18, 2008 10:51 PM
Dadryan: Are you certain that Spain v Italy game is going to be replayed at 3 am? What a bad timing for all these. Not once but twice. With the big crowed on the Metro it would take longer for me to get back home to watch the Euro final. If it's replayed I would watch it at 3 am.
Posted by: arlington4united | June 18, 2008 10:53 PM
You may want to Double Check A4U, you can check tv listings in advance on the ESPN website and that was the best I saw on either the deuce or regular Espn.
I checked Comcast and confirmed that they will replay the United game @ 11 as well. Last week I went to the game and ended up watching the late Replay as well.

guess they didn't need Jaime.

United games are replayed at 11 when they are on Comcast Sportsnet but I am not sure if ABC would do the same.
Posted by: arlington4united | June 18, 2008 11:05 PM
ESPN Classic will be replaying Spain Italy @ 5 pm on sunday also. Or 3 am Monday.
Posted by: Dadryan | June 18, 2008 11:12 PM
I picked Russia before the tournament. I see no reason to change course.
