DCU Update

*Marcelo Gallardo, who has not played since aggravating a groin injury against Los Angeles on June 29, sat out practice again and presumably will not play tomorrow night against Atlante.

Asked about Gallardo's status, Coach Tom Soehn said: "We're still evaluating."

Asked if surgery is an option, he said: "We're still evaluating."

Practice was closed to the media and Soehn declined to comment on the status of other players. Gallardo was not available for interviews.

*Around 15,000 expected at RFK tomorrow.

*Telefutura will be your only TV option. WFED (1050 AM) will handle English radio; no Spanish radio.

*Jaime Moreno, on the missed PK against Chivas: "I am human. I can make some mistakes. Unfortunately, that happened the other night and hurt the team. I feel [even] the best players miss penalties. ... I'm fine. I got all the support of my teammates. ... The keeper did well; he waited for me. Usually keepers guess before you kick the ball."

First! Any word on Blanco Goff?

Re; Gallardo, ugh, that can't be good news.

From the previous thread:

Ty Harden goes to Goodwill Industries, Chase Hilgenbrinck to the priesthood... why is it that you never hear about promising NFL or NBA players heading off to save the world?

Ever heard of Pat Tillman?

Please keep us updated on Blanco. He really has a high opinion of himself. I am a Zach Wells supporter, but, why not use our backup (Thorpe) and give him a shot. You know Zach is going to let one in so give the kid a shot. The worst he could do is let one in, the best is to show Zach how to keep a clean sheet. In MD last Tues, Tino was running and looked good. Mediate got the news he was out for a bit. You could see it in his body language. I, personally, think that concussions are too be gotten over before you get as bad as Aleco and Josh. Gallardo came out, talked to Jaime, and returned to the dressing room. Our $100,000 plus kid (Quavas) ran laps. Tino passed him and he sped up. Came up with another problem. Craig Thompson has been a real asset. I am glad we got him. The guys are out there trying. Do you know the site so we can see how Eddie Pope is handling the player's interests? He is a good man and I would like to see how he is doing. Glad you enjoyed your vacation.

Toronto fans are planning to organize a protest at the All Star Game against the All Star Game which involves them wearing all Black and chanting "United" in a protest against the Toronto Argo and MLS not picking any TFC players. Thoughts?

You really want us to lose don't you?

Posted by: Anonymous | July 14, 2008 1:08 PM

Now I am starting to get concerned about Gallardo. Sigh.

Posted by: strago | July 14, 2008 1:08 PM

When is Brian McBride going to Chicago? I read an interesting article on him and how he left college and went to Germany and when he came home to MLS the German team was stiffed for the transfer fee.

Posted by: VirginiaFan | July 14, 2008 1:09 PM

re: protest. lame.

Posted by: downtown | July 14, 2008 1:10 PM

$15,000, huh? That ought to lead to another round of "tell me again why we have SuperLiga" comments

They are embarrassing us.

Posted by: GoUnited | July 14, 2008 1:21 PM

Gallardo's status can't be good if the Coach won't even comment. Sucks!

I think Zach Wells need better defensive performance from the ENTIRE team.

Posted by: Bart | July 14, 2008 1:22 PM

Good, the TFC fans should protest the Argo's playting at their stadium---it's bad enough it's turf, but to add football lines to it would be atrocious.

As far as not picking any TFC players . . . it's a popular vote, and doesn't go to the most deserving . . . the coach can pick some extra players . . . and TFC fans should get at least one player . . . not sure who that would be . . . Dichio?

Posted by: delantero | July 14, 2008 1:41 PM

That protest? It's cute.

Posted by: RK | July 14, 2008 1:41 PM

I think the majority of Chivas players attended the Blanco Futbal Club. Holy cow they dove a lot.

Posted by: bobf | July 14, 2008 1:54 PM

could't Gallardo have been sent to that doctor in Germany and be back on the field by now? I remember Namoff a bunch of other people playing like 2 weeks after his groin surgery there.

Posted by: pat | July 14, 2008 1:54 PM

Goff - is Q&A this week?

Posted by: JSF | July 14, 2008 1:56 PM

Off topic, kind of. I don't know what we would do if Goff and Dave Johnson ever left town. Between them they have been our champions (in the feudal sense of the word -- or when it comes to a new stadium, should that be "futile"?)

Posted by: DE | July 14, 2008 1:58 PM

I heard that the DCU game's blackout was caused by none other than a Chivas fan trying to disrupt the game by giving the team a rest.

is that true, Goff?

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | July 14, 2008 2:03 PM

Surgery for Gallardo?

Dios mio...

Posted by: Virginia Blue Blood | July 14, 2008 2:04 PM

I want to say that I am a Zach Wells fan, and he played very well on Saturday. There is no reason for him not to start tomorrow (I should have put this in the post match thread).

Gallardo's injury concerns me. Jamie has been very good in that role lately, but sometimes he slows the game down too much. I think Gallardo is excellent in the middle of the field ad was really starting to develop chemistry with the weapons around him. I hope that he is ok for his sake and ours. Groin injuries suck.

Posted by: Dave | July 14, 2008 2:06 PM

Hey, Goff - Since you are the true insider any chance you can sneak a peek at the DC United footage of Blanco last week?

I hate to think that this is all going to blow over and we won't ever know what really happened.

Well, we'll know but that there won't be any action taken...

Posted by: Col Heights, DC | July 14, 2008 2:13 PM

I agree Dave - He did very well and has shown signs of improvement.

With Gallardo - Ya know Fred should be in that AM slot not DIEKLANKO :-)

RM New guy Thompson
LM Burch

@Karen,

Thanks!

Sigh.

Posted by: Virginia Blue Blood | July 14, 2008 2:16 PM

When USSF and/or MLS makes a ruling on Blanco, I will report it. Until then, nothing else to say.

Posted by: Goff | July 14, 2008 2:18 PM

""I want to say that I am a Zach Wells fan, and he played very well on Saturday""

Too bad there have been 20 some other games when his play has been mediocre, inconsistent and, on a couple of occasions . . . game losing.

I'm all for Zach improving, but goal keeping is still our most pressing need.

Posted by: delantero | July 14, 2008 2:21 PM

In a perfect world, DCU should enter the GK market. The most pressing need, however, is supplementing a very thin corps of field players. Consider all the injuries - Quaranta, Gallardo, Mediate, Stratfod, Peralta, Olsen - and all the older players who will need a break now and then - Moreno, Martinez, Emilio, Gallardo (if and when he returns).

The lineup we fielded on Saturday fought hard, but I don't think they would have beaten many MLS teams...

Posted by: hoyanick | July 14, 2008 3:01 PM

I'm calling it right here:

Blanco's going to get a slap on the wrist.

He's selling tickets and jerseys for the league and the media doesn't seem too interested in it.

Posted by: Mickey | July 14, 2008 3:25 PM

Posted by: TheWashDipsSince88 | July 14, 2008 2:03 PM
----------------------------
It was reported by team officials that the blackout was due to a short circuit so stop believing what you want to believe.

Posted by: C'mon... | July 14, 2008 3:30 PM

I heard that RFK forgot to pay they light bill and that's why the lights went out. Also, @ Section 130:
Want to play 20 questions to see if I can guess your identity? (I sit in Section 130 also).

Posted by: Tron | July 14, 2008 4:01 PM

I'm worried about Gallardo's injury, but I'm also worried about Peralta. A healthy Peralta would allow the team to move Burch or McTavish back into midfield. Mediate would help too.

Posted by: DCUMD | July 14, 2008 4:05 PM

section 130 is where all the chicken fans showed up and that's must have been pretry annoying!

Posted by: td | July 14, 2008 4:12 PM

The injured players you listed, minus Olsen, are not seriously hurt . . . more of the typical minor strains found in any season . . . and I wouldn't be surprised if Gallardo's "injury" were minor too.

The bench players we have should get time before we assume they aren't any good--Kirk, Doe, Cordeiro, Pat Carroll, Thompson----and need to be replaced.

I still think the most pressing need for our is quality goal keeping. Wells hasn't proved anything to me.

Posted by: delat | July 14, 2008 4:29 PM

Has anyone seen Will Chang?

Posted by: Anonymous | July 14, 2008 6:08 PM

any thoughts, Goff, on the actual nature of Gallardo's injury? since we've all discussed the lack of urgency of Superliga, not having played since the 29th simply comprises the Rhinos, the Fire and Chivas, figure he was unlikely to make an appearance at MSP, that leaves the meaningless Chivas game where anyone with even a slight nick should spend the night in the hot tub.

so is this a real problem, or a 'let the guy heal completely for August and beyond" problem?

Posted by: northzax | July 14, 2008 6:21 PM

Watch Tuesday night's match on Telefutura, but if you are like me and can't follow the spanish commentary, put on Radio 1050 and use your TiVo/DVR to sync the video to the audio. Worked great on Saturday. If only the result had gone the way of the good guys.
