Morning Kickaround
*A midweek crowd of 16,000 (though many got in for free), five goals in the first half, a goal by a former local college hero, a virtuoso performance by not-an-all-star Schelotto, the equalizer by a returning USA international, ESPN instead of ESPN2, what more could you ask for from Columbus's 3-3 tie with Kansas City? Watch the video by clicking here.
"I think people saw an entertaining game," Crew boss Sigi Schmid said. "I don't think ESPN can complain about that. They saw that our team can score goals and can be explosive. It was a good game for the fans, an exciting game."
*Man U closing in on Dimitar Berbatov?
*Links to my DCU story and Olympic women/men story.
*Tomorrow's DCU-Houston match can be seen locally on Comcast SportsNet and nationally on Telefutura, but Tuesday's makeup game between the teams at RFK will not have any standard TV coverage in the Washington area.
*Kansas City has moved its Sept. 13 home game with David Beckham and the Galaxy from 10,000-seat CommunityAmerica Ballpark to its former home, vast Arrowhead Stadium.
*USA surgeon Damion Valletta, on Abby Wambach: "She's sustained a very significant injury to her bone. It can sometimes take a year to return a professional player to her previous level of activity, but the expectation is that we will have an aggressive rehab program and progress her weight-bearing rapidly to minimize her time lost for competition."
Which brings us to today's poll.....

Well played

i saw the play where Wambach got hurt. It baffles me that she went for the ball when it was clear that she would not get to it on time without getting a good knock down.
Most players would have pulled back and not stick their foot in there.

I am not saying it is her fault that she got hurt.
my point is for a friendly, she really did not have to be that hard core. I get the point of trying to get revenge from the WC last year. but so close to the Olympics, maybe she could have taken that intensity down a notch and save it for the actual tournament.

you must not have watched her play much. She's not "most players". My question is why USSF schedules 2 friendlies against Brazil's B team at this critical time, when you know the style of their play.

I watched the Columbus vs KC match. It certainly was entertaining.

in a strange way I think having to play without Abby may be a good thing for the team. They can't rely on her to carry them so the team will have to pull together.

A bit baffled by Berbatov for ManU. Seems they need a midfield enforcer moreso than another goal scorer. Maybe they plan to win every mathc 5-4.

Is it good for Abby or the U.S. team if they have an aggressive rehab program? They don't have a major tournament for three years. Shouldn't they just take their time and get it right?
I'm probably reading too much into this.

From the video highlights, it looks as though Columbus scored 2 own goals. Kansas City was lucky to tie the game.

Really fun game last night. Not much defense (there were some Burch-McTavish style moments going on out there....) but who cares? Schelotto is really good. I don't care much about the all star stuff, but really, if you're going to hand out some midseason recognition, you shouldn't overlook a player like him. It was nice to see the cbus fans showing him some love, though, like when they were chanting his name while he took the corner...

The US women in Beijing ought to still fare pretty well. Under Sundhage they have played a more possession oriented style that doesn't rely as much on a forward to hold the ball as Ryan's team did. With regard to simply putting the ball in the back of the net, they have other options. I think they'll be ok.

So, it sounds like the Crew aren't exactly pulling in a big paid audience. No more successful than the Wizards and NYRB. No wonder the league is trying to sell every star it can to Europe. Methinks reports of MLS' success were greatly exaggerated. I give the Crew another 20 years. If they haven't found an audience by then, move em out...sooner, if some sucker city is wiling to build a new stadium.
Posted by: Fisch Fry | July 18, 2008 10:58 AM
As for Berbatov, the logic is obvious. Only Ronaldo and Rooney have been involved in more goals in the EPL the last 2 years. Ronaldo wants out. Rooney's going to get hurt, again -- if not this year, then next.

Any idea how to redeem tickets from the rained out Houston match?
Posted by: danj | July 18, 2008 11:28 AM
we could ask for the Washington Post Sunday TV guide to list the game on the correct channel. that's what we could ask for!
i missed the whole first half because the Sunday TV guide had the game listed for ESPN 2 !

Columbus should scale down their stadium even more. 18,500 is probably a perfect fit for them. Since it was the first SSS, they didn't really have anything to base the size on, but now we realize that even the scaled down size of 20k is too big for the Crew.
Posted by: CACuzcatlan | July 18, 2008 11:37 AM
I have to agree with Fisch Fry on Berbatov but not for the same reasons. He is great at receiving, holding and passing the ball in addition to his scoring. Rooney and Ronaldo can run onto his pass all day long in a three striker attack. That said, I'd rather see him stay at Tottenham to see what he, Keene, and Modric can accomplish.

So, a relatively meaningless DC v. HOU Superduperliga match gets regional and national coverage, but a DC v. HOU league match gets bupkiss? Whoopee!
Is it just me or do we need to start recognizing that the relative lack of depth on MLS team rosters in connection with the league's relatively low team salary cap is starting to create wear-and-tear on those top MLS teams have to play in league, Open Cup, MLS Cup, Champions League and SuperLiga matches? It seems to create a vicious cycle ending with diminished returns: without depth the same players have to play in most if not all of the games, the only reason those players don't play is because of injury, and those injuries happen more often because the players are having to play more games.
I'm glad that DCU is one of the best teams in the league and gets to take part in all these tournaments. It's a benefit they deserve and should be given. But, more games means more injuries, and the lack of depth on the roster means that there aren't a lot of good options to plug those holes. And, at the end of the day, the team may have taken part in those competitions, but has a diminished chance of winning in each one because, as the season progresses, they're less and less able to consistently put out a competitive side.

US women will be fine. They were all superstars on their college teams; without one target they may play better.
We'll see.

What was our attendance at the rained out houston game? that was mid-week and bad weather. i still feel like it was better than the atlante game. that made me sad.

Funny thing about the Dispatch though -- Mitchell did that story on the Crew's attendance, but as I noted a few threads earlier, there hasn't been word one said either in the print version or in his online blog about SuperLiga, not even in the agate. I understand the need to be Crew-centric, but it's as if the tournament doesn't even exist in Dispatch World, and the MLS teams participating have gone into some void.

If not can someone clarify? Will the bar code reader's be in effect?

Yeah. What was that about. I thought ESPN was trying to save money by broadcasting MLS and a cheerleading competition from the same venue.

Anyway you look at it the Crew were winners regardless if they gave the tixs away...those people paid to park, gobbled a few buck a brats and threw down some suds...maybe even bought a foamy finger or a yellow and black flare...meaning the Crew made $$$$ last night! Who cares how they got there, at least they got there and brought an apetite and saw a good match!

there is something patently hilarious about someone on a dc united blog saying that columbus should scale down their stadium. helllooooooo???
and columbus doesn't need to move...ever. they have a sss, and if it weren't for the teams without an sss ***cough, dc*** mls would be in great shape financially.
15k in a sss >>>>> 22k in a rented stadium
