More Reviews Come In

Surely your light sabers must be all aglow with anticipation. "Revenge of the Sith" is less than three days away from its 12:01 a.m. May 19 debut. Naturally, more reviews are starting to pour in.

A.O. Scott of The New York  Times weighed in today with a near-rave review: "This is by far the best film in the more recent trilogy, and also the best of the four episodes Mr. Lucas has directed. That's right (and my inner 11-year-old shudders as I type this): it's better than 'Star Wars.'" A bold statement.

And there's more where that came from in the Chicago Tribune, where Michael Wilmington gives the movie four stars: "It's also the scariest, most exciting, most visually prodigious of the sextet, with action sequences that explode off the screen, characters who finally awaken your sentiments (a bit) and images of violence, inferno, chaos and the dark side that descend like a shroud of noir. "

Anthony Lane of The New Yorker, on the other hand, slams the living Sith out of Episode III in an absolutely hilarious review. An excerpt: "The general opinion of 'Revenge of the Sith' seems to be that it marks a distinct improvement on the last two episodes, 'The Phantom Menace' and 'Attack of the Clones.' True, but only in the same way that dying from natural causes is preferable to crucifixion."

Roger Ebert has some qualms, too: "To say that George Lucas cannot write a love scene is an understatement; greeting cards have expressed more passion." But he still gives the movie three-and-a-half stars and strongly implies that this is not the end of the saga. "Although Lucas has absolutely said he is finished with the series, it is inconceivable to me that 20th Century-Fox will willingly abandon the franchise, especially as Lucas has hinted that parts VII, VIII and IX exist at least in his mind. There will be enormous pressure for them to be made, if not by him, then by his deputies," Ebert says.

Where are the Post reviews, you ask? Patience, young Jedis. They will come soon. And another blog post will come later this afternoon.
