Story pick: Christopher Walken in his old Astoria 'hood
For Friday, let's walk with Walken. "In Home Again," the New Yorker's Peter Stevenson accompanies actor/dancer Christopher Walken on a casual visit to his boyhood neighborhood, Astoria, in Queens. It's a light feature of little consequence but it achieves something difficult in non-fiction -- it reads like a real-time vignette. There is almost no background material, no explanation, no movement of the camera away from Walken, the setting and the characters he encounters. Yet Stevenson stitches the thing together so artfully that a revealing image of actor and place emerges through quote and scene. The guy is just fascinating. Nice way to end the week.
