How Hillary Is Worse Than Cheney

[Need personal advice of a political nature? Or political advice of a personal nature? Send your question to Stumped. Questions may be edited.]

Dear Stumped:

Why do you think that Democrats get roasted for "memory lapses" while Republicans do not? For example, in his vice presidential nomination acceptance speech in August 2000, Vice President Cheney spoke of flying over Arlington by helicopter and being emotionally touched by its "crosses row on row." Headstones at Arlington aren't cross-shaped, but no one called him a liar. Yet when Hillary Clinton remembers her trip to Bosnia as being dangerous but gets the details wrong, she's a liar. I'm sure her trip to Bosnia was dangerous, and she probably was lectured about potential snipers in open spaces like airport runways.

I recently had the experience of being absolutely certain that an event happened a certain way, and would have sworn to it on a stack of Bibles. Yet when confronted with a record of the event in my own handwriting, it is clear my memory was inaccurate -- although somehow I still can't believe it. With the recent passing of my mother, my siblings and I have been reminiscing over old family times, and we have discovered significant variation in our memory of some events. I don't believe any of us is lying.

It appears to me that Republicans are free to have memory lapses while Democrats are held to to a standard that none of us could meet in our daily lives.

Signed,

Too Young for Senior Moments

Dear Too Young,

I don't agree. I think we cut politicos of all parties plenty of slack when it comes to faulty memories. Your Cheney example is a case in point: That wasn't resume-pumping. It was not a huge deal. He probably saw rows of crosses at a different cemetery, or was moved flying over Arlington for a different reason. It's as if I told you I read a horrifying story about a car bombing in Baghdad in the New York Times when in fact I read the story in The Washington Post. That's an understandable lapse of memory.

Republicans do get in trouble when their supposed memory lapses stray into the realm of lying. Remember Mitt Romney early in the primary season getting roasted for claiming that he saw his father march alongside Martin Luther King in support of civil rights? Romney's father may have been sympathetic to King, but Romney looked ridiculous trying to spin a rather poetic definition of the verb "to see." And he got clobbered, justifiably.

Clinton's lie was far more serious -- and for all the brouhaha, I don't think she has been criticized enough for it. If Cheney claimed he'd come under fire sometime when he hadn't, there'd be no end to the media's relentlessness! To claim that you had to sprint to dodge bullets (with daughter and Sheryl Crow in tow) when you didn't -- and then to say you "misspoke" because of a lack of sleep? C'mon. We're veering into pathological territory here, something more serious than a faulty memory.

To your point, coming under fire and being briefed about potential dangers are not the same. I was warned about street crime in Rio de Janeiro before I went there, but wasn't mugged. If I told you I'd been shot at while there, and then took it back, saying I misspoke because I was tired and had been told Rio wasn't safe, what would you make of me? Would you hire me as your babysitter? Accountant? Lawyer? President?

Would you then want me picking up that phone at 3 a.m.? I wouldn't.

Dear Stumped,

If Hillary Clinton should win the presidency and visit the Middle East, would she be required to cover her head and face -- like many women in the Middle East, even though she's president of the United States?

Billy C. Turner

Dear Billy,

Certainly not. American executives and diplomats -- such as Condoleezza Rice -- do not submit to such backward practices when they travel in the region. One of the things that makes the prospect of a female president so exciting is the statement it will send: America is (or at least is becoming!) a society of equal opportunity and gender equality.

Then again, if that first female president is Hillary Clinton, she will probably come back from her Middle East tour claiming that a burqa was forced upon her when she arrived. When the videotape showed otherwise, she'd claim she "misspoke" on account of a lack of sleep, and because she had heard some women are forced to wear burqas....

Dear Stumped,

Please help me. I am about to lose my sanity. I honestly don't get it: Would Barack Obama quit the race if the situation were reversed and he trailed by 150 or so delegates? Why is everyone calling on Hillary Clinton to drop out?

It all drives me mad. Let the game play out!

James Angus Linney

Dear James,

I agree that calls for Hillary Clinton to withdraw are outrageously premature, and there is a double standard here. It all stems from expectations. It reminds me of the Wall Street earnings game. If a company is expected to post a profit of at least 55 cents a share but instead makes only 47 cents per share, its stock gets punished and everyone wants its CEO ousted. But if a scrappy competitor expected to make only 40 cents a share posts results of 49 cents a share, its CEO will be heralded as a visionary genius.

Convert those earnings-per-share numbers to popular-vote percentages and you have a rough idea of where Clinton and Obama stand today. But they started from very different places in terms of expectations -- and Clinton unwisely stoked expectations early on, with the result that she is being pummeled now with perhaps more glee than is called for. As close as this contest is, it is hard to see how she pulls it out, but with her proven resilience, 10 states still to vote, and all those uncommitted superdelegates, I see no reason for her to drop out now. And I don't think it is fair to claim she is doing any damage to the party by staying in till all states have voted. That argument may start making sense in July, if she is still considerably behind then, but for now, as her husband puts it, we should all just "chill out."

Of course I am not an unbiased observer here. If she drops out now, I won't be able to have any more fun with "Snipergate."

I think Hillary's exaggeration about Bosnia pales compared to Obamas assertion that he never heard any negative comments from Pastor Wright after attending his church constantly for 20 years.

Americans think the rest of the world is plain vanilla with technicolour Hollywood icing. I have news; it's a very dangerous world. You are lucky to live in freedom to make big errors but maybe you should read the "Lord of the Rings" again. You are the hobbits; you eat too much, party too much, and are blissfully ignorant of the real challenges outside the shire. George Washington would have had Hillary and Barack shot for lying to the American public on the television.

ON HILLARY DROPPING OUT..
SHE HAS THE LEGAL RIGHT TO STAY IN.
it is the democratic process.
some dont understand and think they can force it,
but also there is concern the GOP will have PREPARATIONS momentum the DEMS WONT for November. and more ammo because we are still undecided on our choice.
as long as the dem party is continuing to work on november strategy for either choice . we will be the winners.

i think AMERICA after 8 years of lies and embarrassment and destruction of all we hold dear as AMERICANS NOT TO MENTION oops mistake of the war and bankruptcy etc..
has learned.

If not, we are truly a lost cause... and we may permanently lose our leadership status in the World's opinion. Allies will drop like flies. if we continue the GOP war machine and civil rights killer...Dont' be surprised if a new country emerges as the world leader, after much ado.

Here is an poll on the issues taken on 3/7/08 Notice that HRC wins on all issues except uniting the country. Now how is Obama how can seem to unite the party is actually going to unite the country is beyond me.

But forget the facts, lets focus on non substance issues such as hope Speeches appearances, and lest we forget, HRC is lying witch. This strategy served us really well with Bush versus Gore and again with Bush vs Kerry (Duh!)

As the depth of depravity and silliness most mass media has descended to, well, they need to look silly in order to attract traffic in this brave new internet age.

The person that writes this column is a sad example of the worst that journalism has to offer. To refer to the Muslim headwear traditions as "backward" is unbelievable. What would you call the Catholic tradition of communion I wonder. I imagine it appears to be barbaric to non-christians, since it is basically symbolic cannibalism. If you can't maintain at least the facade of objectivity, than go back to journalism school, or your cave, or perhaps under the rock you crawled out from. I am neither Muslim or Catholic, and, in fact, do not believe that a supreme being, as described by mainstream religions, exists. However, I am a rational and understanding human that respects the beliefs of others, even when they do not coincide with my own. It is truly unfortunate that more members of my species do not share this perspective.

Regardless of your political preferences, think about this: The President gets classified intelligence briefings daily. I would think that President Clinton got these briefings which let him know what was going on all over the world. Would the President of the United States send his beloved wife and only child into potentially mortal danger? I don't think so.

Posted by: twinkerbell | April 6, 2008 3:51 PM

This is just a part of politics that got blown out of proportion. If reporters would not fear being labeled as racist, more of Obamas' lies would surface as well.

Posted by: RGC | April 6, 2008 11:46 AM

Big deal so she padded her resume. It proved that she did go to international destinations to serve our nation as First Lady. Obama still has to explain why he sat in front of Rev. Wright with his kids for years.

Democrats are voting fo McCain in November because women and white males don't like Obama and because he didn't count Michigan and Florida.

Obama gave Wright $22,000 in charity and he gave the South Carolina and Black caucus group $16,000 in 2006 to pay off Republican Gov. Jebb Bush to move the Florida primary up and disenfranchise voters. Report that.
Thanks Grace

Dear Stump (wonder about the person who has this name),

My comment is about the Hillary Clinton mispeaking about her "under fire" trip.

I find your writing her mistake was "almost pathological" as an arrogant comment. I am curious to know how old you are. I am wondering if you have ever worked on a presidential campaign.

Sleep deprevation can do many and different things to people. One of the comman signs is memory loss and confusion.

Personally, I believe the bias coverage by present day media is more serious and dangerous than any presidential canidate misspeaking or lying. The power that you, your fellow journalists and bosses control is being misused to the point of destorying good journalism.

Suggestion, work on cleaning up your own mess and then the media may beable to help get this country out of the deep hole it is in instead of making the hole bigger with false statements and even lies.

Very sincerely,
Greendolfn

The anonymous poster of 10:12 pm who would manipulate young Obama supporters into thinking they're being manipulated will find it's not so easy.

Posted by: jhbyer | April 5, 2008 11:31 PM

The media and financial community support for the Obama candidacy make me doubt his authenticity.

The same media that smeared Martin Luther King adore Sen. Obama. But why?

Is Obama gay, or do multiple right-wing media sources promote him just because they suspect he is, and it might be useful to them in October?

Or maybe there is some other explanation--perhaps lying in the economic policy realm--for the corporate media's unceasing adulation of the gentleman from the University of Chicago.

Obama's official views, like those of Bloomberg, McCain and Gore on the financial collapse lean towards bailout of any and all financial predators at taxpayer expense.

And not much of anything else.

Posted by: bjerryberg | April 5, 2008 10:58 PM

Obama is lately bowing and scraping to obese Hedge Fund Manager Gore--Ken Starr's favorite Democrat--and currently the preferred option of London/Wall Street's right-wing in 2008.

I am not impressed by stalking horses--like Sen. Obama--and I hope that most of Obama's youth supporters realize that they are being manipulated by extraordinarily well-paid baby boomer marketing consultants--who prefer Wall Street's 'dollars' to meaningful 'change.'

The letter writer, "Too Young," neglects to mention that Clinton told the Bosnia story several times over recent months, and each time, it was pointed out that her description of events was wrong. Still, she made a conscious decision to keep telling the story, even after she had been corrected.

If she'd only told the story once, just speaking off the top of her head, that would be "misspeaking" or "misremembering." If she'd been involved in some kind of sniper incident at a different airfield, that would be simple confusion. And people would gladly let her slide.

But the story was a regular feature of her foreign policy experience sales pitch and was not blurted out by accident. It was planned.

So there are only two possibilities. One, she's a bald-faced liar, Or two, she's delusional, which is the modern word for "crazy."

Every culture recognizes the pathetic phenomenon of those few odd known to play dress-up in costumes of war for the respect it steals from strangers they prevail upon to bear witness to their false tales of heroism. Hillary has entered the disgraced pantheon of "phony soldiers". Andres is prescient to appreciate the tragedy of snipergate, but the headline, which he may not have written, suggests something altogether invalid.

Cheney's not above pandering to those he exploits, including his base of supporters, who fancy we're fighting a fourth crusade to wrest the Land of Blond Jesus from the swarthy Muslim hordes. He has said far worse things and, unlike Hillary, told actual criminal lies that caused war.

Sonnet 380. Hilarious Hillary

It was so often said of Hillary,
Her nomination was a forgone deal.
But that has turned into hilarity;
For now that is not what most people feel.
The Marxists too in recent history
Around the world would often love to tell
About the inevitability
Of their success. Then communism fell.
There seems to be predictability
About the human penchant to foretell:
If you are not so versed in prophecy,
Things could turn suddenly into a hell.
So to be safe, just say so modestly:
"In God I trust. I hope things turn out well."

Here is a link to the Arlington picture of head stones with crosses on them http://www.arlingtoncemetery.org/images/ANC_surroundings/PAGES/image68.html

For the first comment on this blog. If you visit Arlington, yes the head stones are not crosses, but there are crosses row on row. Don't get me wrong. I like Hillary Clinton. People say dumb things from time to time. But your example was poor. Hillary was trying to make her trip sound more eventful. I don't see how Chenney's comment can be construed as trying to make the senseless deaths of war any more sad.

My own experience is that I have recurrent nightmares of traumatic events that didn't happen but were possible nevertheless in a distant past time. Absurd outcomes that trigger me waking up sweating and relieved that that was a bad dream. It is possible that is what happened to Hillary and she used that fantasy three times as a cute and courageous act that only happened in her dreams.

Correction. I'm sorry, i "mistyped" a word in the second sentence of my comment posted at 9:05 a.m. It should read, " Both apply to those people who are NOW on the attack against anyone who finds fault in the newly released tax returns of the Clintons." Really, I made an error; and i was not even under sniper fire at the time.

Posted by: charles ruch jr. | April 5, 2008 9:29 AM

Biggest thing: She has a character flaw that would make her the worst president in a century:
Jesse Jackson once said of Bill Clinton, "There's no core there, he's all about ambition."
Hillary does have a tiny core of basic values, but one of those values is her own ambition and determination!
To use a football analogy, even Bill Clinton realized that there is a time to throw the ball out of bounds, and live to fight another day. He could drop back, punt, go on defense for a while, contain the damage, and try again!" Every time he did that, though, you'll notice Hillary ran and hid, and didn't show her face!
SHE IS INCAPABLE OF DOING THAT!
All she can do is try to force the issue, and, when it blows up on her duck and cover.
Her own ambition has permeated her core values!

Posted by: Glen | April 5, 2008 9:16 AM

Which is why because the Clintons' lapses are not only mental but moral. Both apply to those people who are not on the attack against anyone who finds fault in the newly released tax returns of the Clintons. The Clintons say they paid taxes on their income for those years; and we are expected to accept the convicted, disbarred signature of the husband, who signed the returns, swearing under pain of perjury, as if he cared, that the returns were accurate, or the sgnature of his "wife" who wants to be but won't be the Democratic nominee for President (first, because as the returns shout, she's been "misspeaking" when she calls herself a Democrat; and second, because it's as easy for them to "missign as for either of them to "misspeak.) And, if they were truthful, then forgoodness, she's entitled to be knighted the Nominee as well as praised and cheered because they paid the taxes they owed.

Exactly, the problem with memory and everything else in life is that you need JUDGEMENT to delineate reality from fiction. Based on her on record, she has very bad judgement and we don't need bad judgement at 3am or any other time of the morning.

Posted by: Clinton Supporter | April 5, 2008 8:39 AM

Why don't you stop piling on Hillary for every word and nuance that comes out of her mouth. Why don't you start looking into Senator Obama, who we know nothing about. Lets start with the Rezko issue and Senator Obama's purchase of his home for hundreds of thousands of dollars under the asking price. Oh, and lets not forget the fact that Senator Obama does'nt take money from the oil companies. We know thats not true.

Posted by: francis | April 5, 2008 8:03 AM

If it were Obama trailing there wouldn't be calls for him to drop out because people wouldn't be afraid of him doing something reckless.

People clearly ARE afraid of what Clinton will do. In fact if there wasn't so much backlash, i would guess that they would have gone for the throat already.

Billy's question
"If Hillary Clinton should win the presidency and visit the Middle East, would she be required to cover her head and face -- like many women in the Middle East, even though she's president of the United States?"
Reveals how naive Americans are about life in the Middle East.
For over 40 years I have lived in Amman, Jordan. Though my husband is a Moslem, I have never been forced to wear a burqa, veil or such symbol, as Westerners perceive, of subjugation. Out of respect for the culture, I have worn a scarf bandanna style, but that was many years ago. Don't devout Christian women around the world cover their heads when they enter a house of worship? Don't these women mentioned wear a mantilla or head covering when they have an audience with the Pope, even when they are not Catholic?
In many countries in the Middle East like Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq a head cover is a matter of choice.

It's amazing that vicious twisting of the truth by you and people like you is allowed in news media that have prided themselves on their reputations. Since you set yourself up as someone who answers questions, you know that a fellow passenger with Hillary Clinton on that Bosnia landing 12 years ago was quoted in washingtonpost.com as saying they were told that there were snipers in the hills and were given flak jackets on the plane, not warned of some possible danger in advance as you deliberately made the false comparison. The fellow passenger also said that Hillary and Chelsea were taken to the heavily fortified cockpit while the plane landed. Any nitwit understands that being moved to the safer cockpit means you are under immediate danger. She said they were also told that the greeting ceremony might be canceled because of the sniper fire. I received the very offensive e-mail labeling this story "Hillary's Lies".
Franlly, I do not know how you manage to escape a very expensive law suit. She flew to over 80 countries, some repeatedly, and made several take-offs and landings in some trips, including this one. Most of her memory was correct. She can not be held responsible for over zealous people trying to protect her more than the circumstances required. But you don't have any excuse for distorting the truth and calling Hillary Clinton worse than a liar. You are the one who is behaving like someone with pathological problems. You ignored the evidence available to you and made a false comparison.

What's really "backward" is this idiotic attempt at a blog by the Washington Post.

Posted by: Johannes Vindenburg | April 4, 2008 11:39 PM

Today's Wall Street Journal reports that Clinton consultant Mark Penn is shilling for a free trade agreement with Colombia that Hillary says she opposes.

As can be seen from the Clintons' tax returns, those friendly people in Dubai give millions to Bill Clinton while Hillary claims she opposes Dubai ownership of American seaports on national security grounds.

Marc Rich, the fugitive international financier and union buster, was pardoned by Bill Clinton, who enjoyed a social relationship with Rich's wealthy wife.

Hillary's brothers, Tony and Hugh Rodham, also profited from dubious presidential pardons offered by the would-be First Filanderer.

Tony Rodham helped gain a presidential pardon for a Tennessee couple convicted of bank fraud.

Hugh Rodham pocketed $400,000 in legal fees after two of his clients were granted last-minute pardons. One, Carlos Vignali Jr., was convicted for transporting 800 pounds of cocaine; and his pardon was granted against the wishes of the Justice Department.

The list goes on and on ...

One of the best compilations was done by the very reputable Stuart Taylor of the National Journal, who asked:

"Hillary Rodham Clinton is supposed to be smart. But how smart is it for a woman with such a bad reputation for truthfulness and veracity to put those character traits at the center of the campaign?)" ...

Christopher Hitchens, the ubiquitous conscience of the Fourth Estate, is right.

Hillary's "offenses to veracity and decency rival," he said, "if not indeed surpassed, the disbarred and perjured hack who is her husband and tutor."

Parents, can anyone in their right mind think this pair of co-dependent "grifters"--the word Jimmy Carter's chief of staff, Hamilton Jordan, used to define them--is a good role model for today's children?

Personal responsibility is the key to government accountability.

Just today, Hillary is blaming "the boys" for her tanking campaign ...

Forget the pharonic and wasteful spending by her campaign, the vicious infighting among her key advisors, race-gate, the made-for-Hollywood portrayal of Full-Metal-Jacket St. Hillary of Bosnia, etc., etc., etc.

When Hillary is losing, it is always because she is the victim of dark and sinister forces.

Except that these are an ever changing cast of characters (witness her making nice-nice last week with the man who in the 1990s she claimed headed the "vast rightwing conspiracy"--Pennsylvania mogul Mellon Scaife).

If you begin to add up the list of all those Hillary has blamed at one point or another for her being unable to realize her agenda or her ambitions you come up with at least the beginnings of an interesting profile ...

It is of the American people themselves.

The investment of influence
Paid so well and no one would TELL

So she went UP the HILL
And there she met Barack Obama,

Journalist's Creed - 1906

The Journalist's Creed was written by the first dean of the Missouri School of Journalism, Walter Williams. One century later, his declaration remains one of the clearest statements of the principles, values and standards of journalists throughout the world. The plaque bearing the creed is located on the main stairway to the second floor of Neff Hall.
I believe in the profession of journalism.

I believe that the public journal is a public trust; that all connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibility, trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is betrayal of this trust.

I believe that clear thinking and clear statement, accuracy and fairness are fundamental to good journalism.

I believe that a journalist should write only what he holds in his heart to be true.

I believe that suppression of the news, for any consideration other than the welfare of society, is indefensible.

I believe that no one should write as a journalist what he would not say as a gentleman; that bribery by one's own pocketbook is as much to be avoided as bribery by the pocketbook of another; that individual responsibility may not be escaped by pleading another's instructions or another's dividends.

I believe that advertising, news and editorial columns should alike serve the best interests of readers; that a single standard of helpful truth and cleanness should prevail for all; that the supreme test of good journalism is the measure of its public service.

I believe that the journalism which succeeds best -- and best deserves success -- fears God and honors Man; is stoutly independent, unmoved by pride of opinion or greed of power, constructive, tolerant but never careless, self-controlled, patient, always respectful of its readers but always unafraid, is quickly indignant at injustice; is unswayed by the appeal of privilege or the clamor of the mob; seeks to give every man a chance and, as far as law and honest wage and recognition of human brotherhood can make it so, an equal chance; is profoundly patriotic while sincerely promoting international good will and cementing world-comradeship; is a journalism of humanity, of and for today's world.
Mr. Martinez, as a journalist, what do you believe?

Thank you Greta

I am one of a group of tens of thousands of Hillary Clinton supporters throughout the Country. We are very well organized and united concerning our objectives and our numbers are growing daily. It is our sincere belief that Senator Clinton would serve our Country well as the next President and truly cares about the American people. However, we are also keenly aware that many members, though not all, of the Media have exhibited coverage which can easily be interpreted as biased against Clinton and favorable to her opponent. This is not fair. The Media is a powerful influential force in the minds of many and unfortunately,in our opinion, that force has had adverse effects on her profile in the eyes of all viewers. It is not my intention nor will I proceed to criticize other candidates but simply leave the decision process up to the people determined to seek out the real truth and character of each Candidate. We now find ouselves at a crossroad at which a decision had to be made. First, it was always and still is our intention to vote for Senator Clinton. After we carefully and completely studied all the information and facts pertaining to the Candidates, we are of the opinion that the Democratic Party does not offer us a viable alternative should Senator Hillary Clinton not receive the nomination. As a result, we have decided that it would be in our best interest and for the good of the Country to vote for Senator John McCain as an alternate choice. We are respectfully asking every Hillary supporter who shares our feeling to join us. In joining hands with us, we would simply ask you to send a message similiar to this one to each and every Newspaper in your area and ask family and friends who agree to do the same wherever they may be. Please remember the future of our Country lies in your hands and the United States of America is only as strong as the determination of its Citizens. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to address this isue and may God Bless you and may God Bless America.

He is a racist who hates whites, listened to his Pastor who damned America for twenty years and did nothing(I am a Veteran of Viet Nam Era in the Marine Corps), Obama is anti-semitic, has lied and yet the media ignores it and puts him on a high horse...the letter which follows describes our position and is being sent to Newspapers, Government Officials, TV stations etc. throughout the Country...after reading the letter and if you agree...please write us...

TO ALL MY PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS...if this gets cutoff PLEASE write to vemocgh@aol.com for full text...you'll love this one....
I wanted to let you know that Obama has released a brand new ad for Pennsylvania. He stands in front of a gas pump at a gas station, and explains that gas is now $3.50, then he goes on to say that he does not accept money from oil companies, and HE IS LYING. PENN voters will not know he is lying unless this brief article is proliferated on the internet. Please help me to share this information where it counts. It is wrong for Obama to flat-out lie to voters in Pennsylvania!! PLEASE SHARE!!!

Obama misleads PENNSYLVANIA VOTERS in new TV ad
False Advertising: New Obama Ad Falsely Claims He Does Not Accept Money From Oil Companies
Phil Singer, Deputy Communications Director: "It's unfortunate that Senator Obama is using false advertising to explain why he can be trusted to do something about energy prices. Senator Obama says he doesn't take campaign contributions from oil companies but the reality is that ExxonMobil, Shell and others are among his donors. I wonder if they'll fix the ad."
A new ad by Sen. Obama running in Pennsylvania falsely claims that Sen. Obama does not accept money from the oil industry. In the ad, Sen. Obama says, "I'm Barack Obama and I don't take money from oil companies or lobbyists and I won't let them block change anymore."
According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Sen. Obama has received over $160,000 from the oil and gas companies. Two major bundlers for his campaign -- George Kaiser and Robert Cavnar - are oil company CEOs. Sen. Obama has accepted money from Exxon, Shell, BP, Chevron and just about every other major oil company. Just last month, Sen. Obama accepted another $8,400 from ExxonMobil, $12,370 from Chevron and $6,500 from British Petroleum.
In 2005, Sen. Obama voted for the Dick Cheney energy bill, which was written in secret with the oil industry. Hillary Clinton opposed Cheney's energy bill, has a plan to eliminate oil industry tax breaks, and would require oil companies to contribute to a $50 billion strategic energy fund to jumpstart research and investment in clean energy technologies.

Subject: Obama

Ever wonder why the "progressive" (as he repeatedly describes himself) Obama dances for Wall Street on the (fake) Social Security "crisis" (Krugman 2007a) and sounds like Mitt Romney and Rudy Guliani in decrying the specter of "government mandated" universal health care (Krugman 2007b)? Curious about why the avowed environmentalist thinks that nuclear power should be considered part of the solution to America's energy crisis and has recently joined Hillary in voting for the extension of the corporate-neoliberal North American Free Trade Agreement to Peru?

Follow the money. Obama's presidential campaign has received nearly $5 million dollars from securities and investment firms and $866,000 from commercial banks through October of 2007. Obama's top contributor so far is Goldman Sachs (provider of $369,078 to Obama), identified by Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) investigators as "a major proponent of privatizing Social Security as well as legislation that would essentially deregulate the investment banking/securities industry." Eight of Obama's top twenty election investors are securities and investment firms: Goldman Sachs, Lehman Bros. (number 2 at $229,090), J.P. Morgan Chase and Co. (# 4 at $216,759), Citadel Investment Group (#7 at 4166,608), UBS AG ($146,150), UBS-America ($106,680), Morgan Stanley ($104,421), and Credit Suisse Group ($92,300). The last two firms are also known to be leading privatization advocates (Center for Responsive Politics 2007a)

Senator Obama has made the following statement," I don't take money from oil and gas companies and I don't take money from lobbyists." From the Center for Responsive Politics he accepted $160,000.00 from major oil companies, Exxon, Shell, Chevron, BP and others.

Two of his top bundlers George Kaiser and Robert Cavnar are CEO's for major oil companies. Last month, Obama accepted another $8400.00 from ExxonMobile, $12,370.00 from Chevron and $6500.00 from British Petroleum..

These are the same major oil companies testifying on Capitol Hill today

These are the funds and contributors for 2008 Finance/Insurance $15,087,469.00, Communications $7,035,249 Securities, $6,715,680.00 , Education $5,069,186.00 Misc. Business $10,261,541.00 there is a little more than $8,024,382.00 undisclosed.

Exxelon a lobbying group, for Nuclear Power Industry contributed $227,000.00 far exceeding any support for any other presidential candidate. David Axelrod, Chief Strategist has helped Edison Commonwealth, a subsidiary of Exxelon
with its communications strategy since 20002.

This isn't even taking into account his friends; William Ayers, the domestic terrorists, friend, neighbor and board member with him on the Woodlawn Preservation & Investment Corp.
.
Anthony Rezko on trial for kickbacks,a real fixer, friend since 1990 although Obama, initially lied and said he only did about 5 hours of work for him and a church on a real estate deal; he also was a major bundler for Obama's campaigns raising $14mil in 2003 according to the Federal Election Committee.

Nadhim Auchi, Iraqi billionaire; Friend of Saddam Hussein; and Tony Rezko; loaning him $3.5 mil. For the purchase of the house and lot in question; the determining factor for his arrest. He was convicted of corruption charges in France and received a suspended sentence and was living in London. Although Obama says he doesn't remember ever meeting with
Auchi they met briefly at the Seasons Hotel according to the London Times.

Ali Abunimah a Chicago based activist for Electronic Intifada a Pro-Palestinian online publication, who introduced Obama and and his wife Michelle at an Islamic fundraiser at the home of Rashid Khalidi an executive of AAAN.

Finally, his Pastor and mentor almost like an Uncle, Rev. Wright who disrespected and degraded our country along with being an anti.-semite and a hate monger. Our U.S.Senator did not even say anything to this man of God?

This is from our candidate for change. He has honesty

WASHINGTON -- Jesus is black. Merging Marxism with Christian Gospel may show the way to a better tomorrow. The white church in America is the Antichrist because it supported slavery and segregation.

Those are some of the more provocative doctrines that animate the theology at the core of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Barack Obama's church.

Obama's speech Tuesday on race in America was hailed as a masterful handling of the controversy over divisive sermons by the longtime pastor of Trinity United, the recently retired Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr.

But in repudiating and putting in context Wright's inflammatory lines about whites and U.S. foreign policy, the Democratic presidential front-runner didn't address other potentially controversial facts about his church and its ties.

I think this whole thing with Bosnia and Hillary is very petty. Who knows what the secret service was telling her to get her to leave. Its been what 10 years.. I guess Senator Baracka Obama was having a outright lie when he said that the Kennedys traveled with his father to Africa while talking at a rally. That was said to be not true by CBS and an example similiar to Hillary's.

DEMOCRATS BEWARE !

Sorry I forgot, if Obama is nominated, you will see this in front of your eyes daily, by the McCain republican campaign. Though I prefer Obama's foriegn policy, it is clear that Hilary is the only viable alternative, to the Republican controlled media onslaught to come. Link;

How passionate these respondees are. Such venum about the candidates. Please give respect to the candidates. It takes a lot of courage to run for this (or any) office. Both Senators Obama and Clinton are fine people. Every word they say or thing they do can be, and will be,interrupted as whatever the media wants (and I guess us, too). Even the people they know. They are both Americans. Remember, too, that Americans have many different names, even Hussien,. That does not make Barack anti-American. Also, dissent is the real form of patriotism. Passiveness is not, it's just going along. Whoever wins the nomination, we (Dems, Independents, and some Republicans) will all get behind that candidate, because we cannot make it thorugh four years of John McCain (more Bush years).

DEMOCRATS TAKE NOTE!
Don't get me wrong, I really like Obama but the world desperately needs a Democrat. Hillary is an angel compared to the republicans. The Media encouraged by corporate republicans are giving Obama a free ride until he wins the nomination.

When Obama opposes McCain and Hilary is knocked out, below is just a sample of what the media is holding back and will be made public at that point, when republicans have the hated Clintons out of the way

All politicians lie one time or another, when you get caught it doesn't look to good. Classic example, GEORGE W BUSH.

Posted by: shipfreakbo214 | April 4, 2008 5:57 PM

"Stumped" looks like a shill from the Hillary camp. She told this lie at least three times, was warned she'd been caught, but did it a fourth time and made the story a stronger lie. This type of thing is in the Clinton genes, I think. Barack will win because he's consistent, straight forward and he hasn't lied to cover up his gaffs. He also is much better at organizing, raising money and managing money. I don't think the Clintonites have thought it through when they complain Barack outspends them. Surely they must realize that it shows very poor management.

It's an amazing time to be alive in America. We're in a year of firsts in this presidential election: the first viable woman candidate; the first viable African-American candidate; and, a candidate who is the first frontrunning freedom fighter over 70. The next president of America will be a first. */
/ *We won't truly be in an election of firsts, however, until we judge every candidate by where they stand. We won't arrive where we should be until we no longer talk about skin color or gender. / /Now that Barack Obama steps to the front of the Democratic field, we need to stop talking about his race, and start talking about his policies and his politics.*/* */* The reality is this: Though the Democrats will not have a nominee until August, unless Hillary Clinton drops out, Mr. Obama is now the frontrunner, and its time America takes a closer and deeper look at him.
Some pundits are calling him the next John F. Kennedy. He's not. He's the next George McGovern. And it's time people learned the facts.*/*
*/* Because the truth is that Mr. Obama is the single most liberal senator in the entire U.S. Senate. He is more liberal than Ted Kennedy, Bernie Sanders, or Mrs. Clinton. / /Never in my life have I seen a presidential frontrunner whose rhetoric is so far removed from his record. Walter Mondale promised to raise our taxes, and he lost. George McGovern promised military weakness, and he lost. Michael Dukakis promised a liberal domestic agenda, and he l ost.*/*
*/* Yet Mr. Obama is promising all those things, and he's not behind in the polls. Why? Because the press has dealt with him as if he were in a beauty pageant. / /Mr. Obama talks about getting past party, getting past red and blue, to lead the /United/ States of America. But let's look at the more defined strokes of who he is underneath this superficial "beauty." */
/ *Start with national security, since the president's most important duties are as commander-in-chief. Over the summer, Mr. Obama talked about invading Pakistan, a nation armed with nuclear weapons; meeting without preconditions with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who vows to destroy Israel and create another Holocaust; and Kim Jong II, who is murdering and starving his people, but emphasized that the nuclear option was off the table against terrorists - something no president has ever taken off the table since we created nuclear weapons in the 1940s. Even Democrats who have worked in national security condemned all of those remarks. Mr. Obama is a foreign-policy novice who would put our national security at risk.*/*
*/* Next, consider economic policy. For all its faults, our health care system is the strongest in the world. And free trade agreements, created by Bill Clinton as well as President Bush, have made more goods more affordable so that even people of modest means can live a life that no one imagined a generation ago. Yet Mr. Obama promises to raise taxes on "the rich." How to fix Social Security? Raise taxes. How to fix Medicare? Raise taxes. Prescription drugs? Raise taxes. Free college? Raise taxes. Socialize medicine? Raise taxes. His solution to everything is to have government take it over. Big Brother on steroids, funded by your paycheck./ /
** Finally, look at the social issues. Mr. Obama had the audacity to open a stadium rally by saying, "All praise and glory to God!" but says that Christian leaders speaking for life and marriage have "hijacked" - /hijacked/ - Christianity. He is pro-partial birth abortion, and promises to appoint Supreme Court justices who will rule any restriction on it unconstitutional. He espouses the abortion views of Margaret Sanger, one of the early advocates of racial cleansing. His spiritual leaders endorse homosexual marriage, and he is moving in that direction. In Illinois, he refused to vote against a statewide ban - ban - on all handguns in the state. These are radical left, Hollywood, and San Francis co values, not Middle America values.*/*
*/* The real Mr. Obama is an easy target for the general election. Mrs. Clinton is a far tougher opponent. But Mr. Obama could win if people don't start looking behind his veneer and flowery speeches. His vision of "bringing America together" means saying that those who disagree with his agenda for America are hijackers or warmongers. Uniting the country means adopting his liberal agenda and abandoning any conflicting beliefs. */
/ *But right now everyone is talking about how eloquent of a speaker he is and - yes - they're talking about his race. Those should never be the factors on which we base our choice for president. Mr. Obama's radical agenda sets him far outside the American mainstream, to the left of Mrs. Clinton.*/*
*/* It's time to talk about the real Barack Obama. In an election of firsts, let's first make sure we elect the person who is qualified to be our president in a nuclear age during a global civilizational war.
*
*Subject: Kind of scary, wouldn't you think
Remember--God is good, and is in time, on time--every time.
According to The Book of Revelations the anti-christ is:*
*The anti-christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything. Is it OBAMA??*
*I STRONGLY URGE each one of you to repost this as many times as you can! Each opportunity that you have to send it to a friend or media outlet...do it!*
*If you think I am crazy..Im sorry but I refuse to take a chance on the "unknown" candidate

"...but I think her lies about voting for the Iraq War without having read the intelligence reports that only she had access to (not her aides) and saying she believed an intelligence report she hadn't read, and didn't think her vote for the Iraq War Resolution was a vote for war - those are criminal lies."

Really. What about the criminal lies of Cheney and Bush and Rice that got us into war? The lack of any WMD? The lack of any evidence that Saddam was even part of 9-11?

*Those* are criminal lies, idjit. Pull your head out.

Posted by: | April 4, 2008 5:19 PM

"She's a compulsive liar. The truth is not in her and you get Bill too."

Yeah, we get Bill too, which means a real Secretary of State that repair all of the damage caused by the war criminal Bush administration.

What hubris to pretend Hillary's "lies" compare to this Worst. President. Ever. What gall to pretend our country and its Constitutional protections mean nothing in the face of terrorism.

I'm sick of liars like you.

Posted by: | April 4, 2008 5:17 PM

I don't think this Bosnia-sniper-fire Hillary lie compares to Cheney's - but I think her lies about voting for the Iraq War without having read the intelligence reports that only she had access to (not her aides) and saying she believed an intelligence report she hadn't read, and didn't think her vote for the Iraq War Resolution was a vote for war - those are criminal lies. Her vote for the Kyle/Lieberman Amendment to use our forces in Iraq to keep Iran out - which she also claims isn't to pave the way for war-creep - is another one of those Cheneyesque lies.

The Op Ed was an attempt at levity. I only wish Hillary's war votes hadn't turned it into a tragedy.

Posted by: Inaru | April 4, 2008 4:44 PM

I agree with stumped; Hillary clearly lied about the Bosnia trip and got caught. Her polls in PA are reflecting the lack of trust that has engendered.
I think she has got the meessage on the negative campaigning and is now trying to build herself up rather than tear Obama down. It is reasonable for her to stay in the race, but she has to think about the general election, in the likely event that she loses the primary. She may be blamed if Obama loses the general, and be even more friendless in the Senate on her return there.

Why Did The People Who Provided This Camera Action Of Senator Clinton Show Her Getting Back On Her Flight,At Least She Has The Courage To Enter A War Zone Mr Obama Has Not Even Been To Iraq,Or Afganistan,She's Also Been In Other Zone's That Were Under Fire,Why Are Obama People Making Such A Idiotic Assessment Of This Minor Infraction,When He LIES Outright Repeatedly On,Well I Can't Say Issues Because He When It Come To Those He Start Fight's With Senator Clinton,Why Because He Can't Read From His Teleprompter,He Has No Smart's Stuck In His Brain's Like Hilliary Does,The Only Thing He's Stuck On Is Stupid.

It Really Make's You Wonder Why Are His People Making Such A Huge Deal Over Something As Petty As This Sniper Fire Incident,When They Have Plenty Of LIAR'S Within Their Own Camp.

I Know Why It Take's The Focus Off Mr Obama's LIES,Which Are Many Compared To Hilliary's Makes No Sense At All That They Would Make Such A Nuance Of Themself.

To All Of Senator Clinton Supporter's Put The Focus Back On Obama,So He Won't Have Time To Prepare His Lies For The Upcoming Pa Debate. He And His Campaign Need Lot's Of Time To Cross Lie So Obama Will Have 10 Lies For Each Lie He Has To Tell To Cover The Original Lie That He Wanted To Tell All A Long,So This Is About Around The Time He Hold's Up His Finger To The Moderator So As To Prepare Himself For A Fight With Hilliary.

Which She Has Now Lost Mr Obama In Time,So He Start's To Long Talk And Stutter In His Answer's To The Recollection Of The Moderator.

He Has No Answer's For What Change He Proposes To Implement,No Answer's For What Hope He Has In Mind For The American People,How He Plan's To Pay For All This S--T He Has Promised To Over 300,000,000 People In All The States He Has Entered.

All He Has To Offer Is His Constant Lieing Of What We All Know Is His Non-Present's At His Supposingly Work For The People Of Illinois,Which He Has Been Missing In Action Since He Were Elected,Well I Mean Strongarm Elected By His Final Four Elitist's.

Call me silly but I'd rather have a president who imbelishes the truth (in no way that hurts anyone or changes anything) than I would a president who sits every weekend in a church listening and shouting in agreeance to a rebel reverend who wants God to damm America instead of going out to his people and helping them with words of encouragement instead of telling them how badly they have it in America. Poor is poor and it has no color. By his continued presence in this situation only says to me that he agrees and when he becomes president things are going to change in a way that in my mind always takes me back to the church.

Racism is here in America and most places around the world for that matter - in our case however, it is not a political matter. We all have the same rights under the law.

HILLARY 08!

Posted by: kathy5 | April 4, 2008 4:23 PM

Wow.. at least she has some experience that she can talk about.

She is a female in an all male 'gang'. How would YOU FEEL if you were an old fart of a HARD CORE POLITICIAN that had to rely on a 'skirt' for you next re-election bid.

Why would you want to have her KNOW WHEN you were harming the American Voter. Why would you want her to TELL you what to do..?

That is the REAL REASON all the powerful politicians are on HUSSEIN'S side and jumping ship to him.

The American male would RATHER stand behind a Black African, anit- american lair for PRESIDENT.

In many cases he is ACTUAL better than them. A millionaire that will be getting richer at the expense of the American Taxpayer.

He has no experience to lie about... he only talks in generalities... never telling nothing that can be traced. He has carefully avoided any exposure to anything negative. He takes the SAFE road and makes no decisions that are NOT WITH THE MAJORITY.

Brags about being against the war in Iraq.. BUT with this past voting he would not vote or only vote after the majority is determined the outcome.

REMEMBER the PARTIES determined who would be president during the last two terms... NOT the voters. The GOP lined up behind the party... and PUT GOD BUSH into office.

Now the media, DNC and the Cronies of Hussein are willing to lie, cheat. steal and do anything to put the first bi-racial
African American, flag hatind, white hating anti-american into the white house.

BEWARE THE BLACK WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING.

One more comment on the comparison between Dick Cheney's Arlington "crosses row on row" comment and Hilary Clinton's Bosnia gaffe: Cheney's comment echoes the poem "Flanders Field" with which I would guess Cheney is at least passingly familiar given his age; The poem was common middle school fare in the fifties and early sixties. In that context, Cheney's patriotic evocation of the gravestones could be seen as "poetic license" in alluding to the very patriotic sentiments of the poem (written by a Canadian, actually). The fact that the gravestones in Arlington are not cross shaped does not really destroy the image and sentiment that Cheney was trying to evoke, although it MAY interfere with an element he may have sought to inject into the image, namely a religious overtone. But that overtone was not essential to the statement; it was rather a bit of neo-con lagniappe.

On the other hand, Ms. Clinton's misstatement is substantially more exaggerated. Whether or not someone was firing at you and whether or not you had to run for cover seem like the kind of thing that you ought to be able to remember clearly. Furthermore, the actual factual situation turns out to diminish the effect of the story severely.

Ms. Clinton's gaffe is clearly a bit of resume burnishing, while Cheney (at least on this occasion) was merely guilty of schmaltzy over-blown heart string plucking, with perhaps a touch of dog whistling to the religio-patriotic right.

I don't think Hillary should ever have been presented to the public as a candidate. She's a compulsive liar. The truth is not in her and you get Bill too.

She was not named after Sir Edmund Hillary either. Narcissism everywhere. What a mouthpiece! It's not about liberal or conservative; left wing or right. It takes two wings to fly. It's about acting on first principles not secondary causation. I she had principles, Bill would be gone.

For heaven's sake, folks... the "crosses row on row" is a reference to the poem, Flanders Fields by John Mcrea, referencing the dead in WWI. Jeesh. Cheney was not "mis-remembering," but using poetic license. I do not recall any poem mentioning "corksrew landing, sniper fire, and duck and run."

Senator Clinton is worse then Vice Chaney. How many Americans died because of Senator Clinton NONE; But in 1991 Chaney talk about the quigmire we would step into in Iraq if we tried to ovverthrow the Gov't. The vice gave speaches in detail about what a horror we would face; All a sudden he becomes vice and he helps direct policy to send our children there to overthrow the Gov't but he tells the American people it's going to be a walk in the park. RIGHT FOUR THOUSAN YOUNG DEAD AMERICANS LATER. What kind mind do you have to consider a lie, mistake whatever you call it no matter how many times it's done does not compare to the recklessness the Vice has done to the good people of America: What heck are your priorities?

Re: "wearing a headscarf is a backward practice".. Hm, do I get a whiff of real basic anti-Muslim prejudice here? How about a kippa (worn by dignitaries on visits to Israel? It is also a religious headcover, no? Ah, you agree, I see, wearing a kippa is also a backward practice! No? Why not?

Hillary Clinton should spend six days in the Federal Administrative Tribal Area of Pakistan. She can chose any Agency that she
feels her experience in the WhiteHouse can
change the outlook of the women there. If she succeeds then she deserves to be the President of USA.As long as she does not spin a long tale when she returns to NY.

Carol: "But the Rev. statements were his own beliefs and Barack wasn't even in attendence at the time that's why it didn't stick thank God! But the Rev. also brought Barack to Christ and that's why Barack wouldn't denounce him." Get a grip, Carol. Obama went to that church for 20 years and never heard Wright say anything like that? How about this: in his autobiography when he talks about joining that church, he mentions that Wright talked about Hiroshima. Wright used Hiroshima as an example of American "terrorism," so clearly Obama knew about Wright's extremism from the first day. Your guy is a liar. He didn't misstate or forget, like Hillary did about one of her 80 trips. He lied.

Reading Mr. Martinez's comparison of a Cheney "mispeaking" to Mrs. Clinton's, he finds Mrs. Clinton's far more invidious, Mr. Cheney's as relatively benign. That's what leaves me stumped. In their respective careers, while Mrs. Clinton's untruths may have sullied a reputation or two, Mr. Cheney's have cost the reputation of an entire country and thousands of lives.

We do not choose a nominee because of the number of states he/she has won. We do not choose a nominee because of the amount of money they are able to siphon out of their supporters. We do not choose a nominee because of the popular vote. Hillary will not drop out of this race because her supporters are 100% behind her. She does not rack up the huge amounts of monies that Obama does because she has women, single mothers, older people, and working class families supporting her. For a lot of them it is hard to come up with $10 or $20 dollars....but they do vote and that is what counts. Our party will not be damaged if she stays in the race. What will damage the party is if Hillary is seen as being forced out of this election. There are states that haven't held their primaries yet. Those people want to vote. What's wrong with that? What hurts the party are all the hateful Clinton bashers that post on all these news sites..it turns us against your candidate. This is an exciting race...people love it. When it is over and our nominee is chosen, Democrats, WILL unit to take this country back!

WHO PAYS THERE "REPORTERS" TO CONDUCT THIS PROPAGANDA WHILE OBAMA IS LINKED BY A MONEY TRAIL FROM MR. AUCHI (IRAQI BILLIONAIRE) TO HIS LITERAL BACK YARD!!!

Mr Obama's presidential run and Mr Rezko's current trial for corruption have revived interest in the property deal tying the Democratic front-runner to a Syrian-born political fixer.

The candidate has called the transaction a "boneheaded mistake" and donated $150,000 in campaign contributions linked to Mr Rezko to charity. The Obama campaign strongly denies that the Obamas received any discount in the transaction even though Mrs Rezko paid the full asking price of $625,000 for the garden, while the Obamas paid $300,000 below the asking price for the house.

An investigation by The Times determined that three weeks before Mrs Rezko's purchase of the garden lot, Mr Rezko received a $3.5million loan from the British-Iraqi billionaire Nadhmi Auchi, one of Britain's richest men.

But Mr Obama is coming under pressure to answer lingering questions about the property deal. The Chicago-Sun Times printed its phone number above an editorial headlined: "Sen. Obama, time to call us about Rezko." Its rival Chicago Tribune opined:"Rezko's trial now is the background music to Obama's campaign. And the volume will surely increase before it fades."

The Obamas bought the mock Georgian mansion in a trust that concealed their identity behind the name Northern Trust No 10209.

Stumped, presumably your next header is "How Hitler Is Mother Theresa Compared To Hillary". Fella, you have a serious castration complex. Grow up.

Posted by: dyinglikeflies | April 4, 2008 3:25 PM

Mr. Martinez is a disgusting political hack and a fool. Dick Cheney lied to get us into a war to save Halliburton from his incompetent leadership. Hillary Clinton is in the fight of her political life. My public speaking teacher called it " exageration for the fact". ie, you weren't there so I embellish the story to add to your understanding of what it was like to be there. Speaking of snipers ,people like Mr. Martinez are the real cowards who snipe from a distance but aren't brave enough to stick their own yellow necks out. Win or lose Hillary Clinton is braver than any of these creeps who attack her. Even the honest right wingers acknowledge her courage.

Posted by: DB (no not Cooper) | April 4, 2008 3:24 PM

And here it is again, the press pushing hor HRC to resign. It is funny that it is her own party that is burying her, not the Republican party. It seems almost quaint that the continuation of the Clinton years -which btw are the most prosperous years for the past 2 decades, is not the goal of the Democratic Party. One would have to assume that the Democratic Party commits sepuku whenever there is a chance to retake the White House.

Obama's resume is thin, his past obscure, and his words unbelievable. Great oratory aside, this man has done nothing for America. I will even go a step further saying that he has done NOTHING for his constituents who have elected him. Many within America sees this, and you will be sure come this November that if Obama is the nominee another Republican will be in the White House.

The Hubris within the Democratic Party elites is unheard of. Do you think that because of the Bush years people will all run away from the Republican party? With John McCain as the Republican nominee and his good reputation across the aisle with Democrats and Independents, it is preposterous to think that the White House is clinched by the Democrats. The act of the Democratic party shoving a no-one who is good at making speeches down our collective throats makes me consider whether the party I admired is being led by a bunch of idiotic left extremists.

Posted by: logicaldoubtofhumansanity | April 4, 2008 3:22 PM

As the so-called liberal media continues to show its bias against Hillary Clinton by reporting only negative stories about her and her campaign, I have to once again ask the question, Why?

In an America less than two-years removed from the debacle of Harold Ford, Jr. loosing his bid to become an US Senator at the hands of outwardly racist Republican campaign tactics in Tennessee how can we truly think this same type of campaign will not be run against Obama?

The continual demonization of Hillary Clinton by America's 'mainstream' media and such liberal institutions like Air America is something I cannot understand. It is weakening the chances of a Democrat being elected to the presidency this year.

If Democrats fail to win the presidency we will all suffer. This election has been hijacked by people and individuals who have forgotten our goals. This thing has become personal- a mistake that just may be fatal for the Democrats' prtesidential campaign.

Posted by: RWinLA | April 4, 2008 3:17 PM

Could you be more biased.
If Clinton loses this nomination it will be because of the highly biased news coverage AGAINST her.
What ever she says is picked apart. Whatever Obama says is the Gospel truth to the media.
Open your eyes he has come out with some doozies, like when his parents met. If his time line is correct his Mother carried him for 4 years, maybe that qualifies as the second comming.
Look up the facts

Posted by: Tammie | April 4, 2008 3:09 PM

Face the facts people, both Obama and Hillary and John McCain misspeak often, and lie occasionally. None of the three is immune to it, and they are equals in it. Even if each of them does it in their own special way.

I am sad that the real issues surrounding the democratic nomination/campaign process are now being washed away with distractions. Why do I refer to the subject matter at hand as a distraction? One explanation comes to mind...smoke screen. Why are we just now hearing of Senator Obama's former Pastor's statements at the height of his campaign? Why has the media failed to highlight other Pastors (white and black) who had similar messages around 911? Why hasn't anyone brought up any real issues surrounding Obama's character or skills as a leader? Maybe, this is all that they could come up with? Maybe, these persons have been searching all along to dig up something to harm the campaign? It seems they had to dig up something almost seven years old to do so. My real question is why now? Why are we trying assassinate Senator Obama's character based upon his former Pastor's emotional 911 sermon? Can anyone recall how high our emotions (good and bad) were back then? Since then, we have as "united" people been making strives towards real patriotism. I am sad today because none of us are asking the "good question". Why now? Why aren't we noticing the smoke screen in such an important election as this one.

Being mistaken in what one says is not a lie. A lie is when you know what you are saying is a lie, such as, "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky."
I know that his lawyerly and Clintony idea about her having sex with him and he not having sex with her. But the DNA in the semen found of the blue dress surely suggested that he had a sexual activity.
Just one scientifically and solidly proven lie-of many.

Come on, get real.
If Obama had lost 10 or 11 straight contests , the Clintons would have been SCREAMING for him to get out for the sake of party unity, to defeat the republicans, to save the whales, to reverse global warming, etc , etc. But when the shoe is on the other foot, she and Billy Boy want to change the rules. What they can't accept is that LOTS of people don't like them, in fact loathe them and many of these people are Democrats like me !!
She CANNOT beat McCain unless the old coot "goes around the bend" some morning.
Hilldebeast-- get out while you still have some modicum of respect, at least among your supporters.

Your answers to the first 2 questions at least should get you a guest spot on Countdown, or any show on MSNBC, the "everything Obama does is great and everything Hillary does is terrible" network.

Perhaps Senator Clinton started down this road of confusion with the "truth" back in the days of Watergate:

I must agree with Heavensway that there is a very narrow perspective on this campaign. I have witnessed people during past interviews requested NOT to talk of issues which might be disturbing to muslims, arabs, Rev Wright, Chelsea Clinton, and Bill Richardson. See Charles Krauthammer's column (April 3) for other descriptions of this action. Also,I witnessed one person who was conducting a poll and first instructed those voting that what they had heard about Obama wasn't true. He said, Now Vote! Its unbelievable.

Could you possibly be anymore bias?

The difference between what Hillary said and Rev. Wright is the fact her lies came out of her own mouth! Rev. Wright is someone who I'll admit has radical views like most pastors do black and white. But the Rev. statements were his own beliefs and Barack wasn't even in attendence at the time that's why it didn't stick thank God! But the Rev. also brought Barack to Christ and that's why Barack wouldn't denounce him. I applaud Barack for that. Its shows compassion and forgiveness which is what the Bible teaches us.

As far as I'm concerned you can take "stumped" to the wood shed and then put him/her/it out to pasture. If the column is here to answer serious questions for the purpose of getting serious answers then it is seriously missing the point. I don't care if the person behind the column doesn't like one of the candidate's, his responsibility is to answer seriously but impartialy. I'm a little tired of seeing these people getting paid for pushing their own agendas instead of giving both sides of the issues or the candidates.

Why bother having a column like this if it's going to be partisan? I don't mean this issue in particular, I mean this column in general.

However, I'll use an example from this issue: "If Cheney claimed he'd come under fire sometime when he hadn't, there'd be no end to the media's relentlessness!"

This is because Cheney has a genuinely irrefutable history of lying for tactical and strategic gain. Hillary has a history of being untruthful enough to make it as a classic politician, but she is no Dick Cheney. Almost NOBODY is a Dick Cheney.

Talking about Cheney as though he is an example of anything normal is simply weird.

So I ask: why does this column exist? Is it supposed to clarify issues for confused people with questions, or is it a game of political T-ball where GOP letter writers set 'em up, and you knock 'em out of the ballpark?

I am a Hillary supporter, so, I hope she wins, period....But....if she doesn't and Barak Obama, finally, makes it to the Oval Office(bad news for the USA, imo,) I wonder what the press and media will do, then? Now, we are all getting the not so subtle message, that they are "scared out of their wits...to utter a negative towards Barak Obama(for very complex reasons, to say the least), so I wonder who and what will they write about...Do you think that for four years all Americans will hear is...yes, isn't he the most inspiring President, isn't he the most intelligent President, isn't he the most well spoken President, isn't he the most of t
