McKinnon StaysWith McCain
The Trail left John McCain media adviser Mark McKinnon in limbo in a posting about the departures of fellow media wizards Russ Schriefer and Stuart Stevens, but McKinnon says he is still on duty: "I'm in 'til the last dog dies."
McKinnon led President Bush's media teams in 2000 and 2004 and was an early recruit to the McCain 2008 operation. McCain's slender bank account will not deter him, McKinnon reported. "You can say my compensation is the honor of working for John McCain," he emailed The Trail this morning. "I'm a volunteer."
Stevens described the departure from the McCain campaign as "more an annulment than a divorce" and said he still thinks McCain can win the GOP nomination. "I think he's particularly well suited to this moment." Stevens also noted that he and Schriefer never received compensation from McCain's cash-starved campaign -- just a few expenses. Nor are they owed any money, he said.
"We never got integrated in the campaign," he said.
McCain was back on the campaign trail on Wednesday, reassuring supporters in New Hampshire that, after a few "adjustments" to his campaign, he's ready to start fresh to win support in the state that launched him eight years ago.
