The Fact Checker

Did Obama "lie" about Ayers?

The McCain campaign claims that Barack Obama "lied" about his relationship with the former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers. It would be more accurate to say that he "told the truth slowly." ( 4:48 PM ET) | More »

Tired of Waiting For Fred's Move

Fred Thompson has been "testing the waters" for weeks, operating officially as a non-candidate but seeming very candidate-like indeed. Trips to New Hampshire. Speeches. Even a howdy at the Iowa State Fair.

Now, it may have caught up to him.

Lane Hudson, the former Democratic staffer who posted the e-mails that led to Florida congressman Mark Foley's scandal-ridden resignation, said Monday that he has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission claiming that Thompson is "ignoring the letter and spirit" of the law.

The complaint argues that Thompson is running a full-blown campaign and should be held to the same regulations as the other Republican candidates.

"He has been presenting himself as a candidate for President, he has been raising large sums of money beyond what would be required to explore a possible candidacy," Hudson wrote on a new blog, newsfortheleft.blogspot.com.

Thompson has said consistently that he has not made up his mind to run for president this year. At events, he often says that he is "testing the water, and the water's warm."

His campaign argues that gives him the ability to delay opening a formal exploratory committee and subject himself to the financial disclosure requirements that come along with that. It appears that he is preparing to announce officially during the first week of September, though dates of his announcement have come and gone before. Jim Mills, a Thompson spokesman, said "We're following the law."

Bob Biersack, a spokesman for the FEC, said the agency has received the complaint. Under FEC rules, Thompson now has 15 days to respond.

By then, though, he may already be a candidate.

I think the FEC has been regulating elections since the FEC has been in existence, matthew. What exactly does your comment about "no-show jobs" mean?

Maybe I just can't figure you out because you are clearly so above the rest of us. You must be, because somehow you know that Fred is "inevitable." As what? Candidate? President?

At the bottom of your contempt for Hudson is contempt for anyone who hasn't been hoodwinked by the hype, as you seem to have been. Or maybe you think Fred isn't subject to the same rules as the mere mortals who are already working to win over voters the legitimate way.

"Idiot" describes anyone who throws in their lot with Freddie the Freeloader and his Entitlement Express.

What's next? Is Hudson going to roll around on the floor kicking and screaming, then hold his breath until he turns blue, then sit in the corner and sulk, shooting everyone looks that could kill until we finally ask "What's wrong?" and are of course told, "Nothing."

Idiot. Find something better to do. Fred is inevitable, and Hudson is probabl just sorry that Fred can use this tactic and he can't. And since when did the FEC start regulating elections, anyway? I thought those were just some no-show jobs for contribution aggregators.

For your sake sprinkle, let's hope your enthusiasm is warranted. Source with Thompson's campaign, according to the WashPost, are said to be uncertain about drawing a large crowd for a Nashville rally around Labor Day. Maybe even the gullible and desperate have tired of Fred's games.

That's quite an impressive case you make for Thompson, super.

Basically, you're saying that if there are questionable things about Fred, so what, because these questionable things are indistinguishable from questionable things associated with previous politicians.

Are you unable to come up with a solid case FOR your guy, or is that type of exercise beneath you, as it seems to be for Fred and the majority of his followers?

Big deal, in two weeks, all of this will be moot. Think Nashville and Fred Thompson. Wooohooo!

Wow, so many interesting viewpoints where shall I begin.

Hmm, calling him a womanizer. Well America certainly hasn't had any men who were called womanizers and still made good presidents.

Only a mediocre actor. Well, we certainly have never elected a mediocre actor as president.

Michael Moore accusing him of violating the embargo against Cuba, well if that isn't the pot calling the kettle black.

Truth be told, he is still not running for President, all he is really doing by these minor events is keeping his options open. I hope he does announce & does run. As to the question of non-disclosure; perhaps it would be easier if he had his wife go and take incredibly large amounts of cash from foreign countries so he doesn't have to disclose the funds as political contributions, as it would be ILLEGAL for a candidate to accept foreign campaign funds. That seems to be what one of the candidates has her husband doing.

Maybe Fred needed some extra time to expand his 2 accomplishments, mediocre senator and actor, so it'll fill up a one page resume. Let's see, reputation for being lazy would add a line or two. 20 year womanizer takes up some space. Little evidence he's ever actually solved a difficult problem. No. Not that. Lucky for us the world is in pretty good shape and we don't really need a leader who has solved difficult problems. Go Fred.

Javna,

Hate to tell you Javna, but your not the only one who knows Lane Hudson. So you can stop your preaching. A victim of one of those "angry conservitive bloggers", wow that is really bad. Against your direction, I DO disagree with his political points of his fishing trip(read above) and I DO question not only his motives but his credibility about the topic. Have a nice day.

Note to Childress57: I happen to know Lane, and I can tell you that if there's one thing he's NOT looking for, it's his 5 mm of fame. He tried to remain anonymous in the Foley Affair, and has paid a steep price for the publicity he got (when an angry conservative blogger tracked him down). Lane is a dedicated progressive who's willing to fight for what he believes in. You can disagree with his politics, but don't impugn his motives.

According to the Michael Moore website, pictures are available showing Fred Thompson's LARGE stock of Cuban Cigars in his office. Like the present Republican ??leaders?? who violate any law they wish, while protecting pedophiles and male prostitutes in the White House (or should we say red light White House?), Thompson undrstands that he and his ugly cohorts are above the law, after all, he is from Tennessee, where education is near the bottom of all agenda categories. Our country can ill afford another bad actor as President.

Please, Everyone knows Hudson is just looking for his 5mins of fame. He might think his points are cut and dried but I suspect he would have a much harder time convincing the FEC when the term "reasonably" is part of his
"Letter" of the law. If he thinks the Thompson campaign is caught off guard by this stunt I think he will be surprised. And I would love to hear how you "Present" yourself as a candidate??? Certainly not by riding around in a golf cart, or wear nice shoes, or even not make specific policy speeches. Hudson doesn't have a chance.
