Thompson Unveils Ad Ahead of Thursday Kickoff
Fred Thompson's image will begin appearing on the small screen today, not as District Attorney Arthur Branch, but as an official candidate for president.
In a 30-second campaign commercial sent to networks for broadcast at midnight, Thompson warns that "On the next President's watch, our country will make decisions that will affect our lives and our families far into the future. We can't allow ourselves to become a weaker, less prosperous and more divided nation."
Thompson concludes the ad with an invitation to visit his new campaign website, Fred08.com, on Thursday to watch a 15-minute video in which he officially announces his campaign for the White House. But if there is any doubt, an announcer then comes on, saying: "Fred Thompson, Republican for President."
The ad will air throughout the day today and during the New Hampshire Republican presidential debate on Fox tonight. Following the debate -- which Thompson is skipping -- he will appear on Jay Leno's "Tonight Show."
The idea, advisers say, is to create a national buzz about Thompson's official entry into the race and drive traffic to the new website on Thursday. The 15-minute video will be available on the website at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning; advisers hope it steals the show the next morning on talk shows and cable news networks.
"The goal between now and the minute Senator Thompson is on Jay Leno is to drive as many people as we can to our website in anticipation of the launch video," said Communications Director Todd Harris.
The video, aides say, is part bio-pic, part conservative motivational film aimed at making the case that Thompson -- who was swept into office in 1994 as part of the conservative revolt that year -- has been fighting in the trenches for Republicans for decades.
The not-so-subtle dig: that former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani (who was endorsing Democratic governor Mario Cuomo that year) and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (who was trying to run to the left of Sen. Edward Kennedy) are Johnny-come-Latelys.
"Success for us will be if we are able to commuicate Senator Thompson's mainsteam, conservative message to a Republican electorate that, frankly, until now, has been hungry for a new voice," Harris said.
On the stump, Thompson will tell audiences that his philosophical awakening dates to his reading of Barry Goldwater's book, "A Conscience of a Conservative" in the 1960s. "It compelled him to found the first Young Republicans chapter ever in Laurenceburg, Tennessee," Harris said.
Thompson's rivals have already tried to attack his conservative credentials by questioning his commitment to the anti-abortion movement and his sponsorship of campaign finance reforms that are anathema to many in the party.
But many of those stories emerged during the summer, when few voters are paying attention to presidential politics. And the critiques have so far failed to overwhelm Thompson's unique Hollywood-Washington persona.
His advisers hope that they can cement the narrative about Thompson's credentials before the attacks ramp up this fall. Said Harris: "There's no question that we need to have a good announcement tour."

The script of the ad, titled "Debate"
FDT: I'm Fred Thompson and I approve this message. On the next President's watch, our country will make decisions that will affect our lives and our families far into the future. We can't allow ourselves to become a weaker, less prosperous and more divided nation. Today, as before, the fate of millions across the world depends on the unity and resolve of the American people. I talk about this tomorrow on Fred08.com, I invite you to take a look and join us.
ANNCR: Fred Thompson, Republican for President.

Interesting considering that it sounds like Thompson is planning a partisan demonizing "us versus the evil them" kind of campaign. That can only lead to a MORE divided nation if he is elected so who does he think is fooling?

What's wrong Butterbar25 -- can't handle people making fun of this dirty old man with so little experience and consistency? Maybe it's you who should go elsewhere. The fact that *this guy* is seen as your '08 savior is laugh-out-loud funny, and very telling about your weak field and your obvious concern about it. As a Democrat, I'm not remotely worried about Fred "Hollywood" Thompson winning anything nationally. Republicans are on the verge of being just a Southern regional party, and his nomination would cement that...and a Democratic victory in 2008. A "real conservative" doesn't have a Republican's chance in Heaven this cycle. Even a casual observer can see where the momentum, money and excitement are...and they ain't with any Republicans (including Thompson who missed his fundraining goal by half and has already replaced his leading advisors -- oops!). If you want a Republican to win, you better nominate a liberal (by Republican standards) and try to sway the large numbers of people who have shifted away from the disastrous and backwards conservative ideology. That would be Rudy. Anybody else would get crushed by *any* of the big three Dems.

Oh, and I wanted to ask the posting community here: what exactly is it about marrying a young attractive woman that would make him a bad President?

Amen Lieutenant!

RE: Thompson as Reagan Redux: Actually, Fred was a Senator before he turned to acting unlike Ronnie, who spent 30 years in Hollywood before he turned overtly political.
RE: Thompson's hat in ring as of 9/6: Very, very smart in terms of avoiding revealing his financial supporters, which tells you who owns him. Furthermore, I doubt that the media will succeed in convincing our torpid electorate that this canny ploy means much.

Wow, what an amazing lack of anything remotely lucid to say by the majority of posters.
Obviously, if your a left leaning conspiracy theorist who believes anything and everything Republican is evil, you are not going to like or support Fred or any other Republican candidate. So stop wasting your breath here. Go whine to others who feel like you do.
For Republicans, and or independents who actually care about the nomination process, I suggest folks take a very close look at Fred. He may not be the prettiest candidate, but he is the only Republican running with honest conservative credentials and a chance at a win on the national election.
If you are a conservative, supporting a Ron Paul or Mike Huckabee, is essentially supporting Rudy, because your votes will only dilute the field. Fred is the only real conservative with a chance to beat Rudy - who is a Republican in name only.
So what if he married a younger, pretty woman?!? She happens to be smarter than Hillary and Bill put together, so I think he made a pretty darn good choice.

He's not directly affiliated with Haliburton, so I wonder who he'll kill thousands of Americans for. He's in lock step with the Yellow Stripe of Texas, so you know it's coming.
Posted by: jmadison1 | September 5, 2007 1:30 PM
Yes - should have spell checked it first.
Posted by: gmujoe | September 5, 2007 1:21 PM
Does anyone on here actually post anything having to do with policy? "...flabby white guy with jowels" - yes, that definately makes him a bad candidate. "slow-talking hypocrite from Tennessee" - hypocrital about what? Danderss 5000 - little early in the day to be that tipsy isn't it? It's called syntax - look it up. To all of you who think FT is going to be a flash in the pan - mark my words: Fred Thompson will be the next president. He's probably not the best candidate, but clearly that doesn't matter anymore.
Ron Paul is quite the breath of fresh air isn't he? Wish more people cared about policy and less about candidates shoes and the age of their wives (although in this case the shoes might be older).

What a joke. The only way Thompon could unite this nation is by imposing dictatorial rule under the thumb of the Republican political menace. Oh wait, that's what Bush has been doing. So, I guess Thompson's message is, "If you want more of the same, vote for me."
Posted by: Robert_In_WeHo | September 5, 2007 1:11 PM
Is it me or does the image above look like Cheney in bad make-up?
Posted by: theroadmaster | September 5, 2007 1:01 PM
Another boring, flabby white guy with jowels who can't help himself when comes to dropping Ronald Reagan's name..
Love those Gucci shoes, Fraud..
You'll be out of the race by December..

WOW! I'm thoroughly underwhelmed. It's Ronald Reagan all over again without the charm, talent or experience.
Like Jethro Bodine, Thompson seems to be stereotyped into what was portrayed in this first ad - some old guy who does alright at playing a lawyer for short stretches of screen time.
The Thompson campaign - catch it while you can. It's a TV series headed for cancellation.
Posted by: Brentmack | September 5, 2007 12:27 PM
OH, I can see it now-
"Hi! I'm Fred Thompson, I'm not the President, but I can play one on TV!"
LOL!
Still would like to see a Romney/ Thompson Ticket!

Ron Paul is interesting,
However, he has no plan whatsoever with what to do with American Foreign Policy.
Posted by: blowmypantsoff | September 5, 2007 10:58 AM
I don't get how Fred can release an ad that says "Fred Thompson, Republican for President" on Sept. 5th, but maintain the fiction that he's not actually running until Sept 6th.
This matters because if he waits until 12:01 a.m. Sept 6th, which is exactly what he says he's doing, he doesn't have to file any campaign finance reports until January 31. By then 6 or 7 primaries will have been held.
So Fred will be spared all the horse race journalism about how much cash on hand he has, and what his "burn rate" is, unlike all his rivals, not to mention stories looking at exactly who is supporting him financially. (Lobbyists? Hollywood? Etc.?)
If I were running his campaign, I'd be worried that having such a legalistic approach to the timing of his announcement would highlight Fred as a Washington lawyer and lobbyist, not the folksy grandpa-prosecutor we know from Law and Order.
It's a smart legal move but not a smart PR one, in my opinion. Of course, since virtually nobody is mentioning this in the media, maybe he's smarter than I give him credit for.

Don't worry Republicans. Gruff Daddy Thompson will save you from those waskwy wabbits.

"Uncle Fred?" "Elmer Fudd?" "Mr. Inevitable?" Who? Get off the pot, Rebulicans, and "recruit" General Schwarzkopf for the race!

Bear2 my exact sentiments! Does he have any ideal how he look?
A wife that looks like a daughter. What Americans don't get is that the country do the final analyst on how they vote by doing a dress down in their head with the mate as first lady or in today's election "first man" :O)
Hillary is no fool - she knows that she got it going on with Bill in the average voter head (not a good choice of words)
Thank goodness the Republicans have a whole lot of scandal in their corner now that topper Bill\Monica.
Actually when you look at it that was the only augmentation they had against the Clinton Administration

I damn the day that I tipped off his staff as to his granddaughter possibly leaving him if she became over exposed in the media. Oh, I mean daughter or... nah, it couldn't be wife!

May God Help Us
"On the next President's watch, our country will make decisions that will affect our lives and our families far into the future"
This country cannot take any more Republican decisions - otherwise there won't be a future at all.

Wow! What an inspiring message! Puh-leeze. He sounds like everyone else out there: change, Washington's broken, I'm a different leaders, blah, blah, blah. I'm not quite sure why everyone thinks Mr. Thompson is salve for GOP woes, but my guess is that it won't take long for people to discover he has faults just like you and me.

A movie about a slow-talking hypocrite from Tennessee; doesn't Al Gore have the rights to that one??

Regardless of whether I agree with Ron Paul's politics or not, his supporters have successfully turned me off to him by constantly spamming the Internet with their canned messages and disingenuous attacks (eg. criticizing Fox for a debate that has yet to even take place).
Posted by: heirtodc | September 5, 2007 2:08 AM
Oops. I thought the debate was tonight, and that I'd missed it. So the question about the phone survey was a little premature. (Blush.)
Posted by: jdadson | September 5, 2007 1:52 AM
There's one thing I LOVE about the current line-up. In the first time in my 39 years being of voting age, (I'm 60), there's a candidate whom I can get behind 100% - and his opposition on both sides is extremely weak. I'm talking about Ron Paul. The terrifying thing is that he may not win. Pundits say he has no chance. It is hard for me even to think about what will happen if one of the others wins - Republican or Democrat. I fear the nation cannot endure another four years of war and spending on credit.
By the way, did Fox run a telephone poll after the debate again this time? I can find nothing on the Fox web site about the debate at all. NOTHING. Am I that bad at surfing, or do they just wish this thing had never happened?
Posted by: jdadson | September 5, 2007 1:46 AM
Interesting opening move. The Pundit Consensus that he's moving too late for a realistic shot is probably wrong.. and based on obsolete assumptions about timing in the NET Age. McCain has peaked and burned out too early.. and Howard Dean's work offered only a peek at what is possible in retail net politics.
Nobody in either party likes the current line-up. He could leapfrog into a front runner status in ink and money in weeks.
