The Trail: A Daily Diary of Campaign 2008

The Fact Checker

Did Obama "lie" about Ayers?

The McCain campaign claims that Barack Obama "lied" about his relationship with the former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers. It would be more accurate to say that he "told the truth slowly." ( 4:48 PM ET) | More »

Giuliani in GOP Fundraising Lead, But Just Barely

The Green Zone: Special Third Quarter Fundraising Edition

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani finally filled out much of the rest of the Republican money picture, and if you're a stalwart for the GOP, it ain't pretty.

Giuliani raised $10.5 million in primary money, $11 million overall, which (barely) makes him the Republican money leader for the third quarter. And perhaps the best news for Giuliani supporters -- his campaign reports he will enter the critical final months of 2007 (when it's time to start buying all those television ads) with $16 million in cash on hand. That compares favorably to Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who reported having about $9 million in cash on hand, and that was with an $8.5 million loan from his personal bank account.

Sen. John McCain's campaign also released their numbers this afternoon. McCain expects to report $6 million raised in the third quarter, and approximately $3.6 million in cash on-hand. Read more on Giuliani and McCain.

Be nice if they'd mention Ron Paul nearly overtaking McCain this quarter, not to mention having more cash on hand, or the fact that he's the only candidate that has actually raised more money this quarter than last quarter, 114% more than his Q2.
