McCain on equal pay

The presumptive Republican nominee says his record proves that he is committed to "equal pay for equal work." But he has opposed legislation to allow victims of salary discrimination to sue employers beyond a 180-day deadline. ( 4:32 PM ET) | More »

Celebrity Endorsement Watch

Penn lending Kucinich some star power. (Reuters).

If you're keeping track at home, or in the pages of US Weekly:
Oprah Winfrey's spending the weekend with Barack Obama.
After keeping her options open by donating to several Democrats, Barbra Streisand formally endorsed Hillary Clinton. (Previous musical support for the Democratic front-runner included rapper 50 cent, who told Time magazine "I like Hillary."

Not to be outdone by high-wattage friends of his front-running opponents, Dennis Kucinich has the support of none other than Sean Penn.

At an event in San Francisco today, the Academy Award winner was scheduled to give what was billed as "a blistering indictment of political leaders and an impassioned endorsement of Presidential proportions."

The "blistering" script the actor chose was not vetted by the Kucinich campaign, whose spokesman stressed, in a statement, that "Sean Penn is a good friend, but he's also a very intense, independent-minded person. He's going to say whatever he's going to say."

Penn's progressive politics are pretty well documented--most of all by the actor himself, who has written dispatches from travels to both Iraq and Iran for the San Francisco Chronicle.

The other side of the race is not without its boldface moments.
This week, Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling worked the crowd with John McCain in New Hampshire.

And, of course, there's Mike Huckabee, whose recent surge in Iowa polls did roughly coincide with the celebrity endorsement he revealed last month: the backing of Chuck Norris.

Sean Penn is backing whom? Who is Sean Penn? Star power is a myth. Penn is just a rich, spoiled brawler.

Besides Harry Belefonte's endorsement of John Edwards, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne performed concerts for him in Iowa, and actresses Jean Smart from the TV show "24" and Madeline Stowe from "The Last of the Mohicans" are canvassing in Iowa for him now. Why were these endorsements left out of the article? If reporters are too lazy to do the leg work, they could just check Edward's website ---

Kucinich or Ron Paul or better yet Michael Bloomberg. The people will be heard. Selling politicians like soap will not work this time...the military industrial complex has killed too many heros -and too many are worried about their jobs/homes/future!

oops, I meant the Washington Post (although the Post and Times are pretty much the same when it comes to coverage of Edwards).

Posted by: pmorlan1 | December 7, 2007 10:10 PM

I know the NYT doesn't follow Edwards campaign very closely so in case you hadn't heard, Harry Belafonte endorsed Edwards this week and campaigned with him in South Carolina yesterday.

By the way you never cover Kucinich so my guess is that Mr. Penn must have said something that YOU hope will embarass Kucinich like the UFO question was designed to do in the debate. You guys are really getting to be predictible.
