The Trail: A Daily Diary of Campaign 2008

The Fact Checker

Did Obama "lie" about Ayers?

The McCain campaign claims that Barack Obama "lied" about his relationship with the former Weather Underground leader Bill Ayers. It would be more accurate to say that he "told the truth slowly." ( 4:48 PM ET) | More »

A Paul on Paul Supporters: 'Crazy in a Good Way'

CONCORD, N.H. -- The country has already been introduced to the Five Brothers Romney, a.k.a. Tagg and the Gang. But there is another candidate's quintet lurking in the wings, ready to do what it takes for their father: the three sons and two daughters of Rep. Ron Paul. In a sign of the newfound intensity of the Texas libertarian's insurgent bid for the Republican nomination, his offspring are hitting the road for their dad, just as is common in more conventional campaigns.

Today, it was Rand Paul, a Kentucky opthamologist, who swept into New Hampshire on his father's behalf, appearing on radio talk shows and speaking to audiences at such genteel settings as Colby-Sawyer College and St. Paul's School. It is the younger Dr. Paul's fourth campaign visit to New Hampshire, and he expects to return to the region for a campaign rally planned for this Sunday in Boston marking the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and paired with a national fundraising "money bomb" for the campaign. One of his brothers, a family doctor in Fort Worth, has campaigned for his father across the Midwest, and two other siblings have part-time organizational roles in the campaign.

Rand Paul, a 44-year-old who shares his father's slight build and bright, impish smile -- though he favors a more colorful wardrobe (orange shirt, blue tie, green cords) -- marveled at the movement that has sprung up around the campaign, particularly in New Hampshire. "It's sort of organized chaos. These people are crazy," he said in an interview with The Trail, before adding quickly, "Crazy in a good way."

Paul was optimistic about the campaign's ability to have a major impact in New Hampshire, noting that the rise of Mike Huckabee in Iowa could set back the current New Hampshire front-runner, Romney. "If Huckabee brings Romney down a couple notches, and if we pull off an upset here, it could be Romney staring at the exit signs," he said.

On previous visits, he said, he had drawn blank stares when he gave his name. On this visit, he said, his handshakes at restaurants met with knowing remarks. Still, he acknowledged, he does not get anything like the wild reaction that his septuagenarian father does. He hopes that may change at the Boston Tea Party celebration, when he will likely be the only Paul family member in attendance.

"I've always wanted to be a rock star," he said. "I'm trying to get them to play that Kiss song, 'Calling Dr. Love.' I'd love to have the band there do it as 'Calling Dr. No,'" the nickname given his father for his lonely libertarian stands in Congress.

As that quote suggests, Rand Paul and his four siblings will not be mistaken for the clean-cut Romney brood, though they too have done well in the grandchildren department, with 18 among them. "You'd have a hard time ever having me and my four siblings with our shirts tucked in at the same time, whereas the Romneys have everything in order," he said. "We're a little more laid back."

As for his dad, Paul let on that the candidate, despite leading a raucous movement focused on individual liberty, is actually about "as square and conservative a person you'll ever meet." When Rep. Paul went on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last month and met Tom Cruise backstage ("Go! Go! Go!" Cruise told Paul), he later admitted that he could not recall what movies Cruise had appeared in. "I think the last movie he saw was when he took us to 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,'" said his son.

Drink LiberTEA at the Teaparty, Dec 16, 2007. Drink it for the first time.

All other candidates DENY LIBERTY.

Ron Paul is the greatest candidate I've ever seen. Consistent for 30 years. No flip flops. We are done with WAR, we want a real currency, we want peace, we want the welfare-state for the military industrial complex to END, we want to fix America and stop policing the world and to stop the authoritarian oppression here NOW.

Here is what the US Government without Ron Paul in charge has done to us:

- 9 trillion in debt
- 850 billion trade deficit
- War in Iraq
- War in Afghanistan
- Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda alive
- Fomenting War with Iran
- 12.25 trillion M3 money supply, and expanding (massive inflation)

Ron Paul's record is crystal clean perfect and consistent. He takes no money from anyone but people and constituents. He is as pure as they come.

One of my favorite quotes about Dr. Paul, "You're working for the most honest man in Congress." That was John McCain speaking to Kent Snyder in 1988.

Marvelous, well-crafted article, Alec! Fascinating comparison between the families of Gov. Romney and Rep. Paul. Not that one kind of personality is necessarily any better than the other; we're voting for the candidate, not the kids, but the kids do provide some insight into the type of person their dads are.

We can also be crazy in a mean and nasty way.

Over the years, the Preamble of the Constitution has decayed to this:
"We the Politicians of the United States, in order to form a more perfect advantage, handicap justice, insure domestic futility, provide for the common pretense, promote the general incumbent, and secure the blessings of power to ourselves and our posterity, do disdain and therefore revise this Constitution for the United States of America whenever we feel like it."
WHOA, I SAY WHOA NOW, WHATCHYALL THINK YOU'RE DOING!!!!
(I'm yelling at the top of my voice here.)

Time to hire Dr. NO to put a stop to this arrogance and restore it to "WE THE PEOPLE............you all know the rest!

To those who say, "Ron Paul can't win... he scores at the bottom of the polls":

The "polls" only ask those who are "likely to vote in the Republican Primary". How do the pollsters determine who they are? They ask those who voted in the 2004 primary. Bush was the incumbent so only 6.6% of the Republicans voted. Who votes in a primary election for an incumbent presidential candidate? Only the most hard-core in the party... a handful of people who are the most steadfast components of the Republican "machine". I'd say that converting 5% - 6% of those, as the polls indicate, is a HUGE victory for Ron Paul!

You've read comments here proving that Democrats are switching parties to vote for Ron Paul. And then there are those who have never voted (i.e., Trevor Lyman - the guy who helped raise $4.3 million for Ron Paul) who are going to vote for the first time in their lives, and those Republicans who stopped voting decades ago because they simply gave up. All of these people don't show up in the "official polls" and they outnumber the old Republican dinosaurs by an astounding ratio.

I'll be very glad when the votes are finally cast in New Hampshire and Iowa. Barring outright vote fraud, the huge margin of Ron Paul's victory will finally silent the "he can't win... he scores low in the polls" drum that, quite honestly, is giving me a headache.

Ron Paul's support is growing because his message of freedom, free markets and liberty is attractive to many Americans.

I have also registered as a Republican (I never voted until 2006, when I voted for anyone against the Iraq War) just so I can vote for Ron Paul. I do not consider myself a Republican (or a Democrat) and resent the choices "A" or "B" when it comes to deciding on the future of our country.

I have never seen a politican who is more straightforward or understandable than Ron Paul. He says what he thinks, no matter who the crowd is, and is not in any corporation's pocket.

I am anti-war, against big government and against a currency that has nothing backing it but a printing press. All other issues are secondary to me. Ron Paul is the only candidate I have ever supported financially. He is not "the lesser of two evils," he is the MAN! If he stops running, I will not vote in this election.

Do I support all of Ron Paul's views? Of course not! We all have our important issues, however, and Ron Paul's views align with mine on my key issues.

Go Ron Paul!

Support for Mike Huckabee is growing because he can lie his way out of anything, unlike Romney who just mumbles something and says he has to check with his lawyers. Mike Huckabee only appeals to the Christian Right. While it's looking more and more like he has a chance at the Republican nomination, he would lose in a landslide to the Democratic candidate. His campaign is based solely on his religion, and I doubt that a Christian theocracy is going to go over very well with the rest of America. He is also the least "fiscally conservative" Republican candidate. Anybody who truly cares about monetary policy can only support Ron Paul. And although Huckabee is an ordained minister, he is clearly willing to ignore the teachings of Christ to become politically viable in the Republican party (i.e. support the war in Iraq, and support the death penalty).

The most important thing about the Ron Paul Revolution, is that is not just about Ron Paul. It is about the message...FREEDOM. And Ron Paul, humble as he is, will be the first to admit to that. Those of us who are sick and tired of the corporate control, and manipulative mainstream media reporting, now have an honest candidate that for once in most of our lives we can get behind and do all we can to see that he gets elected. I for one am not about republican this or democrat that. All I want is the truth, and a candidate that tells it. All I need is a candidate that I KNOW cares about me, my family, my country, and our future. Not someone that will drag us deeper into the global agenda, driving our country deeper into debt with the world banksters. Not someone that would increase taxes to fund socialistic programs that only benefit the mega corporations of insurance companies and big pharma drug companies. America needs a man that will follow his oath to defend the constitution, not continue to destroy it, or drag us into there (unconstitutional without congressional declaration) war. And will halt the planned North American Union where our constitution would become null and void. Give me LIBERTY. Give me RON PAUL!!!

I think Mike Huckabee would do better on Last Comic Standing, than in the oval office. The folksy act and cheesy humor is getting old, especially in the light of his willingness to tax anything that will stand still long enough. Would we be happy with a tax on the internet? I don't think so.

There is one candidate who actually walks his talk, and doesn't pander...the time is now...Ron Paul.

For years I have said that the only person who could change everything wrong about government in this nation (special interests, porc-barrel spending, nepotism among other things) and restore our true Constiutional Republic is Ron Paul.
Since before he announced his candidacy early this year, I have worked every day for him, donated money whenever possible, and told everyone I meet about Dr. Paul.
I don't agree with Ron Paul on every issue, but I do believe that he is the only person we can trust to give our children a better nation than that we leave behind.

Ron Paul has ruined my life. I was once involved and interested in politics, but I eventually gave up on the entire system, and once I accepted that the actions of my own government were entirely outside the ability of any ordinary American to influence, I was able to sink into a numb acceptance of the inevitable slide into whatever future our masters chose for us. Then along comes Ron Paul. His candidacy has forced me to drop the apathy, the disillusionment, because he forces me to once again face up the the fact that when a man has the courage to speak the truth to power, and others come together, no person of character can stand idly by and let others struggle without help. So I donate, and educate myself, and donate, and get the word out to people I know, and this is the worst part, allow myself to hope once again. As Rep. Paul rises, with every advance against all the pressures to marginalize him, well, the suspense is killing me. I can't help but feel that if in such a time of looming crisis, when America is torturer, a nearly bankrupt invader contributing to over half a million deaths of a people in their own land, that if the American people cannot embrace a truly humble, decent, wise man, one who has been right and speaking truth on so many issues, when everyone else in power was wrong or silent, then they truly will never have the character to embrace it. Surely, one day, when all the horrible consequences of their foolishness come to pass, they will clamor for the things they threw away, but it will be too late, and they will never have the qualities needed to reclaim them. So I will suffer for while longer, knowing that if we fail I can ease back into cynicism, knowing that I will never again be plagued by such an opportunity again. Of course, if we win, I have to resign myself to the long fight ahead, and give up on apathy forever, but I'm willing to take that risk if the rest of you are. We'll know before long.

It's time for the RP supporters to realize that the republican nomination cannot be bought by "money bombs" and the like. Ron Paul continues to rate very low in the polls and is unlikely to take the Republican nomination. RP would be better suited to the Libertarian party (a ticket on which he has sworn against running).

Only Mike Huckabee has the ability to appeal to both fiscal and social conservatives, while still supporting assistance programs for the disadvantaged.

Support for Huckabee is growing -- check out why!

It is sobering and an honor to be alive and witnessing what is happening. This is really, really, truly history in the making. It is the One and Only opportunity of this magnitude, and comes Once in a lifetime, if that. An opportunity to really make a difference in the direction our nation is going.
I'd like to ask you to reflect for a minute. What if..........What if we didn't have the internet.....Ron Paul would not have a chance. Thankfully we still have a free and open internet, where we can gather information, research, and organize. But what about the future? Who is going to protect our right to freely gather and disseminate information on the internet? We have seen already that there are forces in the mainstream media that are doing some Pretty Scary Things when it comes to "reporting". If it was deliberate misrepresentation of a movie, or what happened in a car accident, or a sports event, that is one thing. But in the most important event, the one that will decide the President Of The United States Of America, the traditional media and their Powers are banking on the dumbing down of America.
Make no mistake. This year it is not about Republican or Democrat, Libertarian, liberal, or conservative, it is not even about the war in Iraq, really, or even the dollar, or immigration, or abortion, although these things are important. It is about a Leader that is a Leader of the People, and not owned by the Special Interests, not owned by the Bilderbergs or whatever, not owned by the media, not packaged by a pack of consultants who tell him what to say and do, a real, true, honest to goodness American Leader. Ron Paul for President!

I was a bit pessimistic aboutthe Ron Paul campaign when I first heard about it. Now I truly think he is going to be a major player in the Republican nomination. Highly creative and talented people are getting involved in Dr. Ron Paul's campaign. Much of it is independent of his official campaign structure. The Ron Paul blimp is just one aspect. Someone thought of the idea, made the website ronpaulblimp.com, and people started contributing. There is a site with large numbers of sophisticated graphs about Ron Paul's campaign: ronpaulgraphs.com. Major chat sites at ronpaulforum.com, ronpaulnation.com, dailypaul.com, many more. You tube videos are another aspect - many of which look almost professionally created, for example 'Ron Paul Second Fox GOP Debate - Going the Distance!':
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDtLv3I_UaY
Then there's the money bomb days, the next being TeaParty07.com, which will be December 16th, the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. Another group is sponsoring canvassing for Ron Paul that is occurring in New Hampshire: http://www.fiveforfreedom.com/. Huge spontaneous rallies for Dr Paul occur about the country through meetup groups. Additional Ron Paul rallies are done when other candidates come to town. And the official campaign structure doesn't try to interfere with anything. That $4.3 million raised in one day was done completely independent of Dr Paul's staffers. The other candidates have nothing like this. It is because Dr Paul is genuine, not a flip flopper, he has integrity and cares about the Constitution and the American people. That is the nature of this campaign: Freedom! Independence! Liberty! RonPaul2008!

God Bless the Good Old USA.

Let's hope people wake up from the slumber they've fallen victim to soon enough to register to vote rebublican for Ron Paul in their states' primaries.

The only candidate who stands apart from the rest of the corporate bought career politicians is RON PAUL.

What kills me is to read articles which say, and to hear people who state: We can't vote for Ron Paul because our vote will be wasted.

How flawed is that thinking? In this "broken" government, the ONLY way to vote is in-line with your beliefs. Shame on any American that doesn't become as informed as possible on ALL the candidates running. The main stream media doesn't want people to know Ron Paul is running, because they are afraid of his ideals. They, along with the corporations that own them, will not continue to profit from the way things are going presently if Ron Paul is allowed preside.

The republicans say they've kept taxes low, but in reality, we're all bearing unwritten/unrealized taxes in the form of a devaluation of our currency that the FED blesses us with, in order to keep enough money in the pipeline to continue putting trillions into the pockets of the few.

Look up Ron Paul. Don't believe the main stream media, because they are there to shield you from the truth. Ron Paul isn't a career politician. The rest are.

If internet research is to difficult, then sit on your couch and watch the films Mr. Smith Goes to Washington John Doe. It might stir some emotions besides anger and fear, which is what the current administration has been purveying.

The momentum is gaining. The grassroots support is becoming too great for the media to ignore. Ron Paul is not a long shot. The more people examine his positions on the issues the more support he gets. Voter turnout will be one of the keys to victory..contrary to what the media wants people to believe no votes have been cast yet. Take a look at Ron Paul's positions and make an informed choice..there is still room on the bandwagon..come on aboard!
