Obama Pokes at Edwards Over Advocacy Group's Ads

WINTERSET, Iowa -- As former North Carolina senator John Edwards and Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) battled this weekend over economic matters, addressing what has become the biggest issue of the race in Iowa, they also squabbled over the role in the Democratic campaign of independent advocacy groups called 527s.
One such group called Alliance for a New America, being advised in part by 2004 Edwards campaign manager Nick Baldick, has been running ads on Edwards's behalf throughout Iowa, and on Saturday, Obama blasted his rival for not calling for the ads to be taken down.
"John said yesterday, he didn't believe in these 527s," said Obama. "We found out today there's a group buying three-quarters of a million dollars worth of television, and the individual running the group used to be John Edwards's campaign manager."
Edwards said he had not known about the ad buy until learning of it through news reports. He added, "Let me be clear: I am asking this group and others not to run the ads. I would encourage all the 527s to stay out of the political process."
Obama aides said their candidate attacked Edwards on this point because it showed an inconsistency, but in the final days of the Iowa campaign, the two camps are competing for many of the same voters who aren't with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.).
Meanwhile, Edwards urged the federal government to do more to assist states and localities prop up flagging budgets. He called for an initial investment of $25 billion, which would devote more federal funds toward Medicaid and offering laid-off workers more weeks of unemployment insurance. He said he would consider another $75 billion program, which would include tax cuts for low- and middle-income individuals, to help the economy.
"Our economy is slowing under the weight of stagnant wages, a major housing crisis and a spike in energy costs," Edwards said in a statement. "And now, leading economists are saying there's a substantial risk we could enter a recession."
Obama spent the day complaining about international free trade agreements, an issue that Edwards focused on first but has seen his rivals join in the criticism. Obama debuted an ad in Iowa called "Enough" that said, "We've got to stop giving tax breaks to companies that are moving overseas and give those tax breaks to companies that are investing right here in Iowa."
"When I'm President, we'll make sure our trading partners live up to their agreements," Obama said on the stump. "When I'm president, we'll give you training before you lose your job if there's a good chance it will be shipped overseas."

Please God, could there be just one respectful, intelligent comment on this blog?

The reasoning behind this attack on Edwards is quite simple when you look at the overall picture for Iowa. Edwards is finished, and Obama must finish at least a strong second to remain as a viable candidate, anything less and he is finished as well. The "Internal" part of polling that we don't see is where the answers are. From everyone I've seen lately, the "Fear" Factor is playing heavy on the Repub side. Hillary is the only one the Repubs "Fear" in the 08 General, so that alone should tell us something.

'Why doesn't everyone just go look at Obama's website, to look up his policy stances, before shooting off uninformed comments?'
because his words never match what he does.
take for instance, his war stand.. he's says he's against it, but votes for it, and against troop withdrawl.
he's a liar

I don't understand all the bickering going on. Everyone is making some outlandish claim, reiterating their support for their preferred candidate, and hoping it sticks. Why do these opinions have to be so personal? Is it really an insult to our intelligence if someone supports someone different than us? Personally, I support Obama, and I agree that 527 groups are a nuisance, but that doesn't mean I don't have serious doubts about his ability to lead. It's like he said in his speech on faith - he became a man of faith by decision, not epiphany, and his questioning of God was still present. I'm happy to consider other comments about Obama and any other candidate.

Mitzy, I have only two things to say to you:
1) Barack Hussein Obama has already placed his hand on the Holy Bible and pledged to protect the Constitution of the United States. He did so when he won a landslide victory in 2004 to become a United States Senator.
2) The word is nincompoop. For an example, pick up any book by Ann Coulter, or simply look in the mirror if it's more convenient.
Now that we've got that out of the way, here's a thought: the people who are going to vote for the Democratic nominee are, by and large, not the people who are inclined to prejudice of that nature. In fact, even if there were truth to your theory, I would suspect that the vast majority would be overcome by white guilt, and pull the lever for the distinguished Senator from Illinois regardless.

Barack Hussien Obama will not be putting his hand on the Bible and pledging to protect the Constitution of the United States. White America will not allow this. When all is said and done we will go behind the curtain and poke a different hole. And if you don't think that is true then u are all nincampoops

So the other week, Edwards is attacking Obama for wanting to work with those nasty Republicans and then in the next breath he says he will work with the Republicans to get stuff passed through Congress. In 2004 he was not the angry candidate. Now he is the angry candidate. In the Senate he was the conservative Democrat and now he is Mr. Liberal. Edwards is all over the map. Who is the real one? I liked the 2004 Edwards, but not this new one.

ednyo2000 it is obvious through your comment that you really don't get the political campaign process. They are in a race against each other. When that is a race or a campaign like in sports you play offense and defense to beat the opponent. I can't believe you don't understand how it works. Catch on so you will stop coming from the hip.

Wow, it seems like everytime I look at the paper here lately there is an article that describes Obama either attacking Edwards or Clinton. He really needs to stop attacking the other candidates and focus on his own campagn.

John Edwards will do anything to win.He keep on saying he'll deliver the South to the dems when they failed miserably in 2004.JE could not even win his own home state.Iowans would be insane to vote for JE.He's faking populism when he did nothing in his time as a senator to help the poor. Instead, he voted to send them to Iraq to get destroyed and maimed. In addition to his Macmansion, he charged tons of money to give speeches on poverty. You be the judge about his manufactured populism.

Hillary Clinton is just another John Kerry only she's female, and Edwards is an ambulance chaser who can't even win his own state. I just hope the democratic electorate realizes we need a winner and Obama is the only dem who can win.

Edwards is such a liar that it makes me sick to think the people of Iowa are actually going to vote for this guy again.
Have the people of Iowa forgotten that Edwards was part of the the John Kerry ticket that ran a awful campaign against a very beatable George Bush in 04?

Each day brings a new whine from the Obama campaign. Obama is starting to sound like a grade school tattle-tale.

Rat,
Obama is the candidate who talks the most about cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. It's not a popular position among dems, but at least he's brave enough to address it.
Obama has said many times, if you take away the magnet, (under-the-table jobs) people will stop risking their lives to come into America illegally.
and kenshin,
Obama's doesn't support nuclear power unless and until we've found methods of either recycling nuclear waste or ways of storing it safely. Same with liquid coal. Obama's stance is to pursue energy independence, by first focusing on solutions to the problems associated with these energy sources, while also pursuing solar, wind, and other power sources.

The 527 ARE operating in Iowa, and ALL OF THE STATES.
A pro-McCain group ran ads and refused to discontinue after being implored to by Mccain.
Edwards is right: He cannot control what they do, and is forbidden BY LAW from working with them.
Obama is just sorry because he is getting desperate, and because he knows Edwards is going to win Iowa.

nice try obama.
so, what about yourself? why are you so keen in making more nuclear power plants part of our energy mix? remember that question you dodged in the las vegas debate?
did you find some magical way to dispose of all the nuclear waste that illinois will make?
hmmm...or does this have to do with all the money you recieved from excelon (nearly $200,000), the same guys who own three mile island, and run all those nuclear power plants in illinois?
at least edwards has said no to new nuclear power until we know how to dispose of the waste it produces. edwards may have voted for yucca mountain, but he at least knows when he's made a mistake, and how to correct it. he will not leave this to be a problem for our children to clean up.

LOL!
"Roadside" Obama likes to keep his audience Rivited!
Was it Ann Coulture who implied "Pretty Boy" might like it when Obama does that to him?
Then, Obama, maybe you should pull that head of yours out, and realize Low Income does not pay Taxes! That if we got back around 10 MILLION Jobs lost under the Table, right here, to Un-documented Work being grabbed mostly by Illegal Residents, that the Middle Class might actually exist again, and we would not need Un-Employment!

Kathy7540-Not that you do not have a point, but did it occur to YOU, that rather than trying to act indignant, YOU could have attributed it?
When I start to be Paid for what I do for my own reasons, I'll worry a whole lot more about whether people "Approve" of what I do!
Heck, I might even start proof-reading!
