Hillary Rodham Clinton

Chelsea Clinton on the Road in Iowa

By Ed O'Keefe
While Bill Clinton campaigns across Iowa and New Hampshire talks up his wife's professional experiences, daughter Chelsea tags along with mom, acting as a quiet reminder of one of the former first couple's proudest personal accomplishments.

An Associated Press report notes that "Chelsea cuts an impressive figure on the campaign trail....But onstage, Chelsea never speaks; she stands next to her mother and applauds but utters not a single sentence and doesn't even say hello. And reporters covering the campaign have been put on notice that Chelsea is not available to speak to them."

A campaign stop in Denison, Iowa, last Thursday is a great example: Chelsea stands on stage with mom as campaign supporters make opening remarks. She then sits and listens to mom's stump speech -- again. At the conclusion of the speech, she takes to the rope line, shaking hands, signing campaign signs and books, and asking everyone she speaks with to caucus for her mother.

"Hi, I'm Chelsea," she says as she shakes hands, nervously eyeing a cameraman in close range.

The AP notes that a 9-year-old student reporter "approached the 27-year-old Chelsea after a campaign event Sunday," hoping to ask the former first daughter a question.

"I'm sorry, I don't talk to the press and that applies to you, unfortunately. Even though I think you're cute," the AP reports.

It is not Hillary Clinton's place to forbid reporters, even children reporters access to any 27-year old millionaire.

Funny, Hillary risked her daughter's life on a trip to Bosnia, with a corkscrew helicopter landing, and no tea on the tarmac, but on the campaign trail, she doesn't have the backbone to speak to a child.

Chelsea Clinton is overindulged and gutless. Just like her parents.

Chelsea probably doesn't want to get stuck in a political tar baby because she is not a politician. More power her to her for showing up and showing solidarity with her family. Besides, she's very attractive and her brilliance and culture can't help but say a lot about her parents. Both of them.

I also teach my daughter that she should be seen, but not heard.

Well, technically, asking everyone she speaks with to caucus for her mother, and even "Hi, I'm Chelsea" is utter[ing] more than a single sentence and "hi" is a form of "hello". In addition, it's much more than Rudy Giuliani's kids are doing ; )
