No Second Shot at V.P. For Lieberman

By Juliet Eilperin
DERRY, N.H.--Ending the speculation over whether he might join Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) presidential ticket, Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) ruled out the prospect of serving as McCain's running mate.

When asked by a voter whether he was interested in running for vice president should McCain win the GOP nomination, Lieberman initially deflected the query with a quip.

"I'm supporting John McCain because he has good judgment," the senator said.

But after McCain told the crowd he doubted Lieberman coveted a job that has two duties--breaking ties in the Senate and inquiring each day about the president's health--the Connecticut independent made it clear he wouldn't be joining the ticket.

"I'm staying in the United States Senate and it's going to be great to have a friend like John McCain in the White House," Lieberman said.

Lieberman is the worst kind of hypocrite. I have a son fighting in Iraq right now, if he's so sure of the importance of this war, how come I do not see any Lieberman's over there. Can't wait for people to wake up to this guy. What a coward.

I took it as the 26% who supported Bush at his lowest polling point -- we are also "dirty" and "little" ; )

What is a 26%er?

Posted by: amarcavage | January 3, 2008 9:30 PM

Yes, my wife and I are "dirty little 26%-ers" who vote in every single election. Be afraid, be very afraid . . .

Posted by: JakeD | January 3, 2008 9:24 PM

If Lieberman isn't interested, I guess Duncan Hunter wil have to find someone else.

JakeD: I take it you didn't hear Lieberman questioning Gen. Petraeus.

If you did, and you don't hate him, you must be a dirty little 26%-er

Wow! Lots of "hate" directed against Lieberman (ID-CT).

Posted by: JakeD | January 3, 2008 8:54 PM

The only "second shot" anyone with a soul wants to see connected to Lieberman is the one that makes sure that the kicking after the first shot is just reflex action.

The Senator from Connecticut is one of the rottenest of the Bush enablers.

And yes I really do wonder where his loyalties lie .. not because he's Jewish but because of how he has voted.

Should Sen. Lieberman (I-CT) consider retiring from the Senate and the next president be Republican, he (the former) would be a top choice for the Ambassadorship to the UN.

Lieberman shoudl run for office in Israel. He obviously believes we should be staying in Iraq forever. He has not accepted the fact that the people in the mideast don't want Americans occupying one of their countries . This is a foreign policy that doesn't help the Israelis at all. It only means violence forever. We must find a better way to make the Palestians and Israelis live together in peace.

Sure. There might be some better placed Republican - Romney, Julie - that Lieberman ("the conscience of the Senate") might want to toady up to. He's looking for a thoroughbred to ride, not an old war horse.

After all, they don't call him Grovelin' Joe for nothing!

Hopefully the Demoncrats have a real plan to run someone against Lieberman when he comes up for re-election and defeat this ill-advised fool.

Assuming Lieberman (ID-CT) ruled out the prospect of serving as McCain's running mate (he didn't, but let's play along with Juliet), did he rule out the prospect of serving as another GOP candidate's running mate?
