Fred Thompson Out of Race
By Chris Cillizza
Former senator Fred Thompson (Tenn.) bowed to the obvious moments ago, dropping out of the 2008 presidential race in a tersely-worded statement.
"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States," read the statement. "I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."
Those close to Thompson say that his mind has been elsewhere since his disappointing third place finish in South Carolina's Republican presidential primary because he has been in Tennessee caring for his mother who is seriously ill. Those same sources suggested that Thompson is not likely to immediately endorse any of the remaining candidates in the field.

To those who have just lost your favorite candidate,
Please join me in supporting Mitt Romney. Based on the issues, policy, ability, and character I believe him to be the best candidate for president.

Fred was my guy too early in the race. I suppose that no one came closer to that great "Reagan mold" than he did. In Iowa, however, I gave Huckabee a very careful look and found that despite the negative ads to the contrary he really was a "true conservative". Yes he did raise some taxes - but so did Reagan! Besides a very good record in Arkansas he is a GREAT communicator and PASSIONATE about all of the social conservative issues. Please consider getting behind him for President.

Do any of you Dr. No fans realize what the Presidency is all about? There is the issues of Trade, Growth, and Developement involved. Long term planning.
Sorry, no offense for Dr. Ron Paul, he has some good points, BUT, he is the very last person I would want Negotiating with Russia, China, The Middle East, South America, India, Japan, The European Union, or even Canada or Mexico!
Cripes, Dr. NO is NOT an Exectutive Statesman!
WHAT do you think the President is?
Now, that hopefully pointed out, know that there are many demanding and suitible Positions for Egg-Heads in Support Positions BEHIND the Statesmen!
He needs to get into Mitt's Cabinet!

In a Republican party where everybody seems to have divergent opinions, it is sometimes hard to stand back and appreciate the similarities, not only between the candidates, but between a candidate and his party's platform. For many Republicans, and most true conservatives, this cycle has been a dissapointing, if not alarming one. It comes on the heels of two terms of expansionist foreign adventurism, deficit spending, wasteful government programs, gross federal mismanagement, and repeated scandal. That the very nature of conservatism has become a prime issue to Republicans is indicative of the fractures in the party and its electorate.
If you take away the names and the (R)'s and the rhetoric and look, side-by-side at the records of the Republican candidates, some trends become apparent. The majority of Republicans seeking nomination do not set any sort of conservative standard in their projects or voting record. Some could even be classified objectively as liberal! Mass amnesty for illegal immigrants? No Child Left Behind? Raising taxes 47 percent? One called Barry Goldwater an "incompetent, confused, and sometimes idiotic man." The list goes on, but the party will not, if candidates think that a hawkish foreign policy and some lipservice to small government are the only credentials necessary for success.
The Ron Paul community has always had a bit of a soft spot for Fred Thompson. He isn't taken to cackling at ideas of small government, he isn't keen on snap judgements, and he cares about the core of the Republican party. When our candidate was excluded from a Fox Debate, Fred brought up many of the same issues that Ron may have raised. While it is a competition, we always felt glad that at least somebody else understood the principles of conservatism, and the important thing was that the message was being heard. But now Fred Thompson has left us, after rough showings in states that wear their philosophy on their sleeves until it comes time to actually vote. This is disheartening, because the future of our party and of the very word 'conservative,' we feel, has now been winnowed down to one last candidate... Ron Paul.
We need a coalition of thinkers, of people who can look past the rhetoric, see beyond the posturing. We need conservatives in mind and spirit. This is our party, and it is a confused one. But we must never confuse our principles, and in that refusal, we can light the way to victory and a restoration of real values in government.

To all Fred Thompson supporters:
You may be looking for a new candidate, but if you want one with traditional conservative values, vote for and support RON PAUL! Romney, Huckabee, McCain, or Giuliani do not have the same old-time conservative views at this critical point in our nation's time.

It's about time; any non-viable candidate at this time can only be hurting the Republican Party.
Who's most likely to benefit among the Republican Candidates from Fred Thompson's exit?

I find it very upsetting, that so many talented People, appear to be too thick-headed and egotistical to wise up! It is a big Internet connected World now, and the Exectutive Branch of the US is the key component of it. It is a HUGE Job, and one that is no longer best left to One Man to play God with! The Cabinet Positions SHOULD be contested as well as the President and VP! I for one, am tired of Special Interests getting appointments!
Hekuva Job there Brownie!-NOT!
Fred Thompson could be invaluable, as so would McCain, in the Cabinet, using their Congressional Connections to bridge co-operation. McCain, is too Focused on MILITARY, for all the other responsibilities the President needs! He is a PERFECT Secretary of Defense!
ALL the Candidates should Broker a Team.
FYI-The Statesmen: Mitt Romney, and Huck(Number 2!), all the others-Including Dennis Kucinich, in the White House as well, just in Supporting Positions!
Do they want to actually help? Or, just try to be Big-Shots?
The TEAM Effort, might even win the November Election. The Election a BUSHwacked GOP, is currently poised to lose BADLY! Whatever Individual tries competing for!

With recent events in the world stock market, and the Fed doing too little too late, I think the focus on the economy will benefit Ron Paul, who is the only one who was willing to take on Bernacke and the Fed nearly a year ago. He is the only one who understands we can't afford to keep military stations all over the world and will shut them down. If you bring gov. spending down to previous levels, we can phase out income taxes and the IRS and then the Federal (not) Reserve who is charging us interest. He will cut off millions of foreign aid to Saudi Arabia, Israel, and all the other countries (how can we afford that if we're borrowing from China?) and use that money for the American people. He will give doctors and patients more leverage with HMO's to bring down health care costs. He's a retired AirForce so he understands the importance of keeping diplomatic lines open and using war as the absolute last option and only with Congress' approval, per the Constitution. He will restore our Habeus Corpus rights that have been taken away. No more FISA gov. spying on us. America needs Dr. Paul!
