WV: Huckabee Wins

West Virginians for Huckabee. (AP).

Updated 7: 15 p.m.
By Rick Weiss
Mike Huckabee won the race for West Virginia's 18 at-large delegates today in that state's first "GOP Presidential Convention" in Charleston, which assigns the bigger half of the state's 30 delegates. The victory came in a second round of voting, after a first round failed to deliver a majority for any of the four candidates on the slate.

The final vote was Huckabee 567 (51 percent), Mitt Romney 521 (47 percent) and John McCain 12 (1 percent).

Huckabee's victory drew quick recriminations from Romney's campagn manager, Beth Myers, who in a statement accused John McCain of cutting a "back room deal with the tax-and-spend candidate he thought could best stop Governor Romney's campaign of conservative change."
Romney had won the first round of voting but failed to get a majority, necessitating a second round under West Virginia rules. (The first round results were: Romney 464, Huckabee 375, McCain 176 and Ron Paul 118.)

Ron Paul had been the top West Virginia Republican fundraiser for the last quarter of 2007, but 60 percent of delegates were still uncommitted before the vote.

Suspense was high throughout the second-round vote, said GOP Convention chief executive, Bob Fish.

"It went right up to the wire," Fish said. "There are a lot of large counties late in the alphabet, including Ohio and Wood, so as you watched the vote come in bit by bit you could see Huckabee was ahead for most of the voting but a large county could easily have made the difference late in the game."

"The notion of a deal struck between Mike Huckabee and McCain is ridiculous," said Michael Brown, co-founder of HucksArmy.com, in a statment released Tuesday evening. "This election belongs to the people."

Added Lucas Roebuck, Public Affairs Officer for HucksArmy.com: "Team Romney has been trying to spin the results as some back room deal, but that is bunk."

HucksArmy.com is an online grassroots movement not formally affiliated with the Huckabee campaign, dedicated to mobilizing "support for candidates who honor God and country."

I think the media should review the definition of "negative politics"! Is it negative to point out how our elected representatives vote on issues. Or is it negative to distort one's vote or beliefs. To me negative is lying about an opponent. In this political race I will not support someone who distorts or lies about an opponent. Do you belive that person is going to be truthful if elected? The people of our country better wake up or we will not be a democracy. Sociallism is already here. It is in both our political parties!!

In this sate, when one candidate does not get the majority a second vote is mandatory. That is the way it is done people. Did you expect the 3rd place candidate's votes to be redistributed to a Mormon or to a good ole boy from the Bible Belt? Get real. It is not a dirty deal. Quit whining.

Posted by: rhettroeandbeth | February 5, 2008 8:37 PM | Report abuse

It came down to the Ron Paul delegates, who decided the issue. They threw in with Huckabee/McCain, and received 3 delegates in the deal.

I hate the way our system works, but that's another issue. It worked the way it's supposed to. Romney could not get the 50% he needed to win, and he lost to the majority of the elected delegates, who did not want him. What's so hard to understand about that?

Right Wing Religious FANATICS! West Virginia lives up to it's Hillbilly reputation.

And they talk about Muslim extremists!

I am FAR more afraid of Baptists Bible thumppers than Muslims. The "Christian" KKK crown wins for Hillbilly Hucky!

As a registered independent who voted in the Democratic primary today (since the GOP doesn't think I am smart enough to vote) I voted for Obama who I think is the best candidate from either party since he rises above all this petty bickering. As far as dirty tricks go...I wish I could play the 6 NASTY robo-calls I got from the Romney campaign over the past 2 days. None of the calls from any other candidate were negative...only Romney.

Posted by: TomIII | February 5, 2008 5:22 PM | Report abuse

You fools! The deal was made between the Huckabee and Paul campaign...sort of a payback for their exclusion by the media recently. Paul got 3 out of the 18 delegates, Huckabee got 15. Romney and McCain got totally shutout.

While most McCain supporters in this case probably still went Huckabee to stop Romney - tons of McCain supporters would never vote Huckabee because of Huckabee's strong religious tilt and probably went for Romney instead. McCain is an adulterous cheating areligous guy; his supporters don't like religious crazies.

I don't get the Romney supporters. Rush Limbaugh ripped John Kerry to pieces for one flip-flop. Mitt Romney has flip-flop to many times to count but yet Limburger supports him??????

No, it's not a myth. Sooner or later maybe it will actually get reported, interesting story that it is...

What a sleaze Huckabee continues to be. He is an embarassment to all Christians.

On the first ballot, Romney is in the lead with Huck second, McCain third and Paul fourth but nobody had over 50 percent so the way it should work was Paul drops out and they re-vote which would have given Romney the 50 percent he needed but in order to block a Romney win, the McCain camps throws all their support to Huckabee giving him the win.

It is simply shameful how McCain and Huck are working together to defeat Romney. They are both nothing but sleazy politicians and as a life-long Republican, I would never vote for either of them in Novemeber.

Posted by: Ci2Eye | February 5, 2008 5:02 PM | Report abuse

Fascinating that Romney had this wrapped up till McCain sent his delegates over to Huckaby. This one stinks to high heaven.

Posted by: birvin9999 | February 5, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

If it were the voters making the call, why did McCain's supporters have to be ask to throw their support to Huckabee? That little tactic isn't the only one they have pulled....be careful what you ask for...you very well may get it! Obama will remind voters of McCain's age...I'm sure they have a bag full of things to throw at him...like the Keating Five, etc.

Huckadoom and Huckacaust are better words to describe Huck. He is the most ignorant candidate regarding foreign policy, defense, economy, health care, and on and on. He would be an embarrassment to the American and he could never get in.Yes, the republican party loses and so does the American people if McCain were to win. All that McCain has is name recognition and a lot of enemies. Most of Arizona'a republican leaders are against him as reported by the Washington Post and other news media. McCain's own district republican chairman called out McCain as a liar, to the press. He is an emotionally unstable tyrant.

Romney is the finest candidate that we have had run in decades. His ecpertise regarding the economy is necessary at this time of economic chaos. His amazing family and strong values are just extras. Romney is against amnesty, unlike McCain who heralds in amnesty. Romney has proved to be a genius regarding health care and has solid policies regarding Iraq. I will support Romney all of the way to the white house.

What a surprise. The narrow eyed inbreds of WV voted for Huckster. They also elected KKK Bob Byrd, repeatedly.

llevy44950 sez:
"Huckabee only won because McCain's supporters were asked to throw their support to Huckabee."

And Romney only lost because he got fewer votes. All these Romney supports blaming Huckabee and McCain are just like the Democrats who blamed Ralph Nader for Gore's loss. It is not Mike Huckabee or John McCain's job to get votes for Romney. It is Romney's job to win those votes.

Posted by: MarcMyWords | February 5, 2008 4:46 PM | Report abuse

So McCain threw Huckabee a bone, let's wait for the primaries to come in.
No matter how good buddies they are, McCain
will not throw him enough bones to get ahead of him. So there is still no way Huck can win.

aww! listen at the Mitten Kittens wine!
Thanks GOD! Authenticity over came the Great FAKE Romney!
THANK W. VIRGINIA for starting a DOMININO EFFECT FOR OUR HUCK-A-BOO! I AM SO HAPPY I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO...
ROMNEY MAY NOW WANT TO TAKE HIS OWN ADVICE AFTER HE GETS DEFEATED IN THE SOUTH BY HUCKABEE AND IN THE NORTH BY MCCAIN. A GOOD CEO KNOWS WHEN TO FOLD AND THAT WOULD BE A SURE SIGN THAT HE CAN NOT WIN, THEN YOU AN GET DOWN TO THE REAL DEAL....I TRULY HAVE CAUGHT THE HUCK-A-BUGGG!!!! AND NO RUSH FLIM-BAUGH LAURA, SEAN HANITY OR ANYONE ELSE WILL BE ABLE TO SHAPE MY VOTE. HUCKABEE WILL WIN AND WIN BIG. WHEN IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO TRUE CONSERVATISM, HUCK WILL DEFEAT MCCAIN AND IT LOOKS LIKE MCCAIN COULD BE LOOK AT A VP TICKET AND ROMNEY A POLITICAL COFFEN! OUT OF THEM ALL, ROMNEY HAS HANDLED HIS CAMPAIGN FINANCES THE WORST. SOME CEO!

GO HUCK GO! I'M VOTING FOR YOU ALL THE WAY. MY VOTE IS NOTE 4 SALE!

Tiger, I don't believe it is McCain and Huckabee making a deal. I think it is the VOTERS at the caucus who made the deal and that is perfectly legitimate. Even if they are "spoilers" they are voting in the best interest of their candidate and that is perfectly legit.

This wasn't some shady backroom deal. It happened right there in the open.

Posted by: MarcMyWords | February 5, 2008 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Huckabee won the caucus because the system works, people! There had to be a majority, and when McCain's supporters didn't get it, they naturally threw their support to their second choice: Huckabee. All you Romney lovers taking direction from talk radio have missed the fact that a lot of Mike's support comes from potential McCain votes, NOT Romney's.
Go Mike!

Posted by: bethidee | February 5, 2008 4:35 PM | Report abuse

MarcMyWords, what will your response be if McCain and Huck deny that deal?

Posted by: TigerTrance | February 5, 2008 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Scam schmam. It's a caucus and that is exactly the way it is SUPPOSED to work.
Shuffle and vote until one candidate gets a majority. Trashing people because they vote against your candidate is just sour grapes.

Posted by: MarcMyWords | February 5, 2008 4:29 PM | Report abuse

West VA caucuse...1st vote Romney 41%...50% required, 2nd vote McCains people told to throw in with Huckabee..other words a dirty filthy scam.

Let's see if McCain and Huck will admit to that. If so, fine. Anyone think they will?

Posted by: TigerTrance | February 5, 2008 4:17 PM | Report abuse

It doesn't seem like a dirty trick to me. WV's rules require a majority to give delegates. McCain wasn't going to win, so they went for their second choice. Or is it a dirty trick that Romney is so off-putting that only his supporters like him.

I am a McCain supporter and I have respect for Huckabee, Giuliani, and Thompson. I would only vote for Romney in the primaries if the choices were him versus Ron Paul

Posted by: MyFakeAccount | February 5, 2008 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Geez people, have any of you ever actually been to a caucus? If your candidate doesn't have enough delegates, you vote tactically. I was part of a small Dukakis crew at the Iowa State caucus in '88. We didn't have enough to get a delegate at the next round, so eventually joined the Jackson crew for a back-up delegate. McCain and Huckabee have had a defacto alliance against Romney for weeks. It's not exactly a stretch to see the weaker one of the two bow out to the stronger. This was more about the W. Va. delegates for McCain having as much disdain for Romney as the candidate does.

"Back room deals" are exactly what conventions and caucuses are all about. It's called politics folks and it ain't beanbag.

The dirty little tricks that McCain and Huckabee are pulling makes it even harder for me to vote for McCain (Huckabee) should he get the nomination. Huckabee only won because McCain's supporters were asked to throw their support to Huckabee. Remember the great number of Romney supporters may just sit the November election out because I see little difference between McCain/Clinton/Obama. His win may be very hollow. I'd rather it be a democrat that screws up the economy and immirgration rather than someone who calls himself a republican.

Posted by: micron26 | February 5, 2008 4:10 PM | Report abuse

This story made me smile not because I really care who wins West Virginia but because it is a beautiful example of democracy in action.
Those who are calling this foul play are totally missing the boat. It was great politics.

Posted by: MarcMyWords | February 5, 2008 4:09 PM | Report abuse

Well, it sure looks to me like Romney's "Washington insider" rhetoric is making a little more sense to me ever since McCain's camp decided to throw their support behind Huckabee in order to sabotage Romney's chances in West Virginia. It honestly was a dirty political trick. Huckabee should have seen the writing on the wall long ago, he has no chance. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if McCain had a little treat waiting for his political puppy, Huck. By this kind of behavior in WV, McCain has proven to me that he is a perfect Washington politician. He won't get my vote.

Posted by: marc_neilsen | February 5, 2008 4:03 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, that Huck is quite the moral fella. First he plays the religion card in Iowa implying Romney is not a Christian (dare I say "cult member"?) and then plays the race card with the Confederate flag nonesense in S.C. and now he is part of a seedy backroom deal with McCain. Yeah, he's quite a guy...and in bed with McCain.

Posted by: TigerTrance | February 5, 2008 4:02 PM | Report abuse

Will the three Paul delegates show up to the convention in their white robes?

That is, if that story is really true. It could be just another Paulite myth, like the superhighway and the Amero.

Posted by: info | February 5, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

This readership must be drinking Democratic Koolaide. Huckabee only won because the McCain voters knew he couldn't win and voted for Huckabee who does not have a chance. This was a back room deal. You people cutting down Romney are as ignorant as the Dems. Why don't you move to them, you want to nominate a Democrat (McCain) to run as a Republican. Why not get the real thing, register as Dems and vote for Obama or Hillary?

Posted by: eagle13 | February 5, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

Why didn't the WP bother to report that McCain had asked his supporters to vote for Huckabee on the 2nd ballot to deny the win to Romney? A despicable act that just shows how far the supposed upright Washington politicos and their want-to-bes will go to keep those who aren't in their club from making real changes in our federal government. I predict that, if McCain & his supporters are able to win the nomination in this manner, it will mark the last time that we ever see a non-career politician, who's not the relative of a former president, mount a serious challenge for the presidency. I know that our best & brightest and those who have the most to give in leading our country are are not all career politicians, and it is a sad day indeed when we've come to the point where all we have to look forward to is an endless stream of career politicians moving into the presidency.

The Huckster taking West Virginia should be no surprise, since political caucuses, like tent revivals in that state, tend to end with boxes of snakes being carried out the back door to a waiting pickup. The difference this time is one of the snakes remained behind to claim victory.

The good people of West Virginia voted their values and came up with the most
moral (and electable) candidate. With
all the blather about who can out "Reagan"

due to having to deal with Bush's invisible

10 + years as Governor-& RE-elected 3 times vs Romney's one term...HMMM...Huckabee has spent 7 million to Romney's 87 MILLION ...HMMM...OF COURSE Romney wants him out of the race DUH because like it or not Governor Huckabee is an experienced giant killer! He is about to take Romney down! In Governor Huckabee we FINALLY have a candidate,- who after all of the verbal stumbles of the Bush presidency can ARTICULATE Republican principles with warmth, wit, & wisdom. Remember the giant killer only picked up 5 smooth stones...can those be called geogia, alabama, tennesee, AR, Missouri? We will see---I sure hope so for our countries sake! If the republicans are smart and not stuck in their ways Huckabee SHOULD BE on the ticket in 08- but go aheaed and run someone without any charisma and see how bad you establichment know it all types get SMOKED by the demoncrats!!!
