Obama Defeats Clinton in Virginia Primary

By Chris Cillizza
Sen. Barack Obama scored a convincing victory over Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in Virginia's Democratic presidential primary, an early indicator of a strong showing for the Illinois senator in today's Potomac Primary.

Polls closed in the commonwealth at 7 p.m. Eastern time.

Virginia was the state in which Clinton, reeling from a staff shakeup and a series of defeats in primaries and caucuses last weekend, had hoped to perform beyond modest expectations.

Obama's win in Virginia bodes well for his chances in Maryland and the District of Columbia, both of which had primaries today.

Closeted racists beware: Your neighbors are voting for Obama and you might just live where there are barely any Black people. Your circle of ignorance is shrinking, and eventually it'll just be you standing by yourself.

Obama has proven that he can win in any demographic makeup, and the "stuck in 2000" mass media are falling all over themselves to try to predict something that is unprecedented.
Stop applying your tired models to this new reality: people have woken up and they aren't sleepy anymore. They can clearly see that Obama is the only choice that matters.
And amen to that.

JakeD, I believe it's the base morals and truths Democrats hold different to the Republicans which allow most Democratic voters able to demand to see tax records of one of their running officials. No matter how left or right they are.

First woman, first black, first time for new things.

chandler:

No prior Democratic or Republican candidate has ever released tax returns prior to securing the nomination. Why should this be any different ?

Posted by: JakeD | February 12, 2008 9:30 PM

MsJoanna:

Didn't you hear that Obama has been consistently against the war in Iraq whereas Hillary voted for said war?

Posted by: JakeD | February 12, 2008 9:24 PM

Oh And how bout' them tax returns.
Inquiring minds want to know.

Posted by: chandler1007 | February 12, 2008 9:23 PM

To MsJoanna,
This is not about race or gender it is about past versus future. And as you said "YOU" see know difference on the issues but they are there. There is definately a difference on judgement.

"You Gotta Give The People.....Give The People What They Want"

"Obama 08"

MsJoana: Agreed that their positions are not hugely different.

However:

Hillary cannot win the general election. She's already got half the electorate deeply negative about her.

Barack can win the general election.

The key is independents, who'll vote for
Obama over McCain, but McCain over Hillary.

There's not a lot she can do about changing the minds of those folks who hold a deep animus against her.

We will eventually elect a female president. Just not this female. Sad but true.

This now makes it 14 (and DC and MD will probably make it 16 out of the last 30 competitions where Clintons support has been in the 30% range or lower. You cannot win a general election with figures like this in your own primary.

The remaining Clinton supporters that have not already boarded the life boats, continue to attempt to marlinalize Senator Obama's string of victories as a "Black Thing." The Clintons are not only losing, they are getting slaughtered in every region of the country. Thanks to the Big Dog's attempt to smear Barack's landslide win in SC as a re-run of Jesse Jackson, their appeal in the Black community is now comparable to Bush.

While the Clintons franically slink off to TX & OH to build their so-called "fire walls", Barack is burning down their house of cards. The desperate decision to ruthlessly throw Soltis under the bus will prove to be too little, too late. It will also serve to pour gasoline on their Hispanic "fire wall".

Mark Penn and the rest of her enablers will continue their insane spin that getting buried in ten straight states reflects how well she is positioned. Yet soon they will realize that their audience has left the room and is standing in line, hoping that they arrived early enough to make it into Barack's next event.

He is what we have been waiting for...

I voted for Mrs. Clinton in the Virginia primary, but I like both her and Mr. Obama (had choose only one, though). So congratulations to Mr. Obama on his winning streak. I can see practically no difference between them on the issues. So the rivalry between them has become a matter of race and gender rather than the issues, which is unfortunate. I will be delighted when either of them wins in November. That's all that really matters. Go Dems!

Posted by: MsJoanna | February 12, 2008 8:43 PM

The Virginia primary results are not a surprise. Obama got all of the blacks' vote and 55% to 60% of the white male votes. With Virginia's workforce of white males' primarily working for the Federal government in some capacity, it is pay back time for the Clintons. With Bill Clinton as president, all of the promotions where either given to backs or female and most were not qualified for the jobs. PAY BACK IS HELL!!

I couldn't help but chuckle when MSNBC projected Obama as the winner in DC even before any votes have been counted.

Posted by: 1fasthoo | February 12, 2008 8:09 PM

His early VA win means an easy sweep for Obama. It;s hard to fathom how horrifically bad Hillary has done since Super Tuesday. I know these were Obama-friendly states, but still...

It certainly doesn't hurt his chances.

Posted by: norbert1234 | February 12, 2008 7:48 PM

I thought the fact that the District of Columbia has something like 99% African Americans as registered Democracts bodes (bid?) well for Obama's chances there?
