James Hoffa and Bill Clinton: The Dinner
By Jonathan Weisman
It must have been an awkward dinner.
Last Wednesday, Israel honored Teamsters President James P. Hoffa with its Yitzhak Rabin Legacy Award for his support of the Jewish state at a dinner in Washington. Among the guests was Bill Clinton, who needless to say was very interested in whether the 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters planned to endorse a presidential candidate.
"He wanted us to back Hillary," Hoffa said yesterday.
The Teamster was evasive. The union was polling its members, he said. The results were not in yet.
This afternoon, the Teamsters executive board voted unanimously to endorse Clinton's rival, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), with the first joint campaign event planned for Friday in Ohio.
Hoffa said he tried to warn the Clintons before the news broke, to no avail. The cellphone number he had for Bill Clinton didn't work, he said.
"It's not personal. I hold Bill Clinton in highest regard. I hold Hillary Clinton in highest regard," he said, adding, "I owe them a call."

From anywhere outside of the US, this presidential race looks more and more like a competition of who wants to be elected Captain of the Titanic. And the only one who can see the iceberg is Ron Paul, who hasn't a chance in hell.

I too agree with the gentleman who told of all the underhanded and sneaky lying things that happened while Clinton was in office. And we are supposed to put him there again?????? And please enough of this "hillary isnt getting enough attention". Well I believe she has brought a lot of attention to herself with her method of dirty campaign tactics. Or havent you great Hillary fans noticed. Just what did she do for this country in her eight years???? Nothing that has obviously benefited the American people. Well guess what Im saying is I would rather take a chance with Obama..then a chance with someone who has had eight years already and done nothing. And all you Hillary fans ever wonder what Hillary is hiding in her tax returns that she doesnt want known until she is the nominee. Hmmmmm...same ole dirty Clinton politics.

I too, am a life long democrat and will be voting Republican for the first time in my life in November if Obama is the democratic nominee. I just cannot vote for someone I don't believe can lead this country. I am very concerned about his lack of foreign policy experience. I firmly believe that when it looked like Hillary could build some momentum, something changed out there, whether it's the Republicans who catapulted Obama into the lead, or the media or just "the flock being led to slaughter" as someone else commented here (see even I know to give credit to someone else for their words)I cannot get behind it. I would rather see 4 more years of Republicans.

The harm was done to Hillary by herself and by Bill. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Like millions of other people, my wife and I voted for Bill. Even before the primaries in 92 there was scandal,Genifer with a G. My wife and I ignored it as irrelevant.Lots of people have marital problems. Maybe they have got it together now. We sent money for Bill's campaign. Then he was elected.Soon came the cattle futures scandal where Hillary invested $1000 in cattle futures with someone and in three months got a return of $100,000.Pretty incredible. Then came Whitewater, another investment scandal, then Castle Grande, the big investigation by Congress and then Vince Foster's mysterious death. Then the investigation of that and another scandal, Filegate where Maggie Williams went to Vince Foster's office in the middle of the night and took a bunch of files after his death was reported. Some files were returned after she was investigated for obstruction of justice. Nobody but her and the Clinton's know the whole story. Vince Foster had been working on Whitewater. Many in the investigation feel that some files had been destroyed. Then there was the Lincoln bedroom scandal where the Clintons invited guests to stay overnight for very large donations to his re-election. We backed the Clintons because the Republicans attacked so hard. We voted for Bill again. By then the Democrats had lost both Houses of Congress. The second term was more of the same. Endless scandal. Paula Jones, Kathleen Willey , the continuation of Whitewater and Castle Grande. It became regular with the scandals. Then came the really big one ,Monica. Then the investigation of that and the blue dress with DNA on and the cigar dance. Then impeachment for perjury and disbarment of Bill by the American Bar Association for perjury. By election time Al Gore could not be seen with Bill Clinton for fear that it would taint him.But it cost us and Al the election. The fact that Bill and Hillary had so fouled the image of the party that he could not have a sitting president of his own party near his campaign was what really made me mad.Gore lost the election by a whisker. That was sad and shameful to me. Then, on the way out the Clintons had the gall to give out pardons for contributions to Bill's presidential library. And Hillary's brothers solicited pardon requests for money. They even gave one to Mark Rich, an international fugitive from justice for fraud and embezzlement. This was in-your-face graft. All total, there were close to 50 scandals. In the meantime, Bill and Hillary had got what they wanted- a seat for Hillary in the U.S. Senate from New York. And Bill got millions from speaking fees and "consulting". He has continued his shady dealings in the Ukraine and Kazakhstan. They are corrupt and they are in it together and it has hurt the Democratic Party. They are poison for the Democratic Party and will hurt it again. She has also voted for this awful war and voted to give Bush the green light on Iran. She should be defeated. I can not support them any more.My wife and I are for Obama.

Vs-sv is disgusted by the media's favoring Obama.
I was disgusted by Clinton cow-towing to Bush on the Patriot Act, KGB style spying on Americans, and the War in Iraq.
Now I'm disgusted by the sophomoric atacks on Obama from Hillary's mouth, and the Florida style voter fraud in the New York primary.

Well over here on the other side of the world we are taking an interest as well. This 'great democracy' of yours that rules the world and acts with impunity gives the rest of us no say in how we are going to be affected by you, democracy? 8 years of Bush. The world has no faith in your incompetence. Obama has a single catch phrase and it seems nothing else. What a hoo-haa about him being mixed race. Very racist from where we are.
It looks like the people of the U.S. are going to miss another opportunity to elect someone who seems the most competent. CLINTON.
Hopefully at least if you elect this beauty queen Obama he is not another one of your loony Christian fundamentalists, but still a silly mistake.

I'm completely amazed at the naivete on this board. What you Obama supporters don't realize is that the majority of Democrats have supported Hillary Clinton throughout this primary. Were it not for Independents and Republicans, Obama would not be in the lead.
Clinton has won all the Blue states except the one he comes from. Wake up! The Republicans want to run against Barack, that's why they are choosing the Democratic nominee. In November, they'll vote for McCain. And it's hillarious how Barack is out there bragging about them voting for him! Obamacans? Yeah right! Karl Rove is laughing his butt off!
The other thing is the media's hands-off approach. The Republicans won't be so kind and there are a lot of negatives out there about Obama.
Come November, real Democrats, who care about experience and competence, and are upset that a really viable candidate was swift-boated by the media, will either stay home or vote for McCain. Either way, Barack will never be president.

Patrizia,
The GOP still controlled the Senate in 2004. They didn't lose it until 2006. Obama had 2 years there where he was part of the minority.

I love this "experience" argument that Clinton's trying and now McCain is trying as well.
I see parallels to the 1860 election, and not just because Obama, like Lincoln, is from IL.
Lincoln served for 8 years in the IL House, 2 years in the U.S. House. The country was on the verge of civil war for most of the 1850s. Everyone knew it was only a matter of time.
Seward (from NY) had far more experience, as governor, as a 2nd-term senator, than Lincoln did.
Chase (from OH) had more experience, as senator and governor.
The Democratic candidate was Douglas, as we all know.
Obama, from IL, served 8 years in the IL legislature before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. He has more Congressional experience than Lincoln did.
How did Lincoln turn out? He's arguably the greatest president in American history.

How entertaining to hear the whine of the Clinton supporters who blame the media for Hillary's collapse, but who say nothing about her disasterous campaign: the squandering of $140 million just to be essentially tied with Obama on Feb. 5th, a husband who doesn't know the meaning of discipline or control (already known incidents in the white house as president and uncontrollable stupid statements on the campaign trail), a campaign without a message other than the candidate was a woman, and no strategic plan for the entire primary season because of an arrogant candidate and campaign advisors. But just like the Clintons, nothing is ever their fault. The country is exhausted with this thinking between Clinton #1 and the Bush dynasty. Enough!

If Obama wins the Democratic nomination, I will vote for McCain. He knows the system, can get things done and has paid his dues to the country with military service. As commander in chief, he can direct the military effort with expertise that no one else running has. He is a straight shooter who doesn't "borrow" language to pepper his speeches with, who doesn't flip flop on support for issues, who is an original thinker with depth and breadth of experience. Obama is paper-thin. He is a party-boy with charm and an appealing smile. A party-boy has been running the country for 8 years and has ruined the world. I want someone running the country who can restore us to the glory days of Bill Clinton (balanced budget, economic prosperity, respected by the world, jobs for everyone, low interest rates...), and NOT ANOTHER LIGHTWEIGHT PARTY BOY. If not Hillary, then this longtime Democrat will be voting for McCain.

Hillary Clinton is not out yet. She'll pull this off and be the Dem nominee. She's the most qualified and the most electable candidate.
As Obama gets a closer look (he has had a total free pass and a 24/7 media promotion to this point) we'll see there is not much behind the speeches (the words of which are not even his). Read the Chicago Tribune articles on Obama, very telling. Obama has made much hay about his "community service in the south side of Chicago" in his book and in his speeches. Apparently, Obama is taking credit for a work he didn't do as an organizer, read the articles and you'll gett the idea, a woman who worked with him at that time says SHE deserves credit for the work, NOT Obama. He is an empty suit, not qualified or electable in a general election. The Dems would squander any hope for victory in November by nominating Obama. Too many questions about him have yet to be answered. It's time for the media to do their job, investigate and report. It's time for the media to end the 24/7 hit job on Hillary Clinton. It has been blatant and shameless. They don't even pretend to be fair and balanced.

It's funny that some people think that the reporting of McCain's inappropriate conduct has anything to do with drawing attention from Michelle Obama's comment. That's like burning your neighbor's house down so everyone forgets that you had a grape juice stain on your rug. One thing has nothing to do with the other. It makes no sense.

vprofitbreaux, thanks for your informative comment but you have (maybe a little too conviniently) omitted that Senator Obama was elected to the Senate the same year that lots of Republican Senators lots their seats. With a more "favourable" Senate, it is a hell lot easier to sponsor and pass bills closer to Democrats' hearts. You also failed to say how many bills Hillary wrote and co-sponsored in her 2 terms in the Senate and how many times they both voted or not voted (I guess it's better leave that stat since it's not too favourable to Sen Obama?).
If you want to put forward a reasonable comparison between the 2, the same metrics should apply and the full stats should be made public. Otherwise, let's leave it, shall we?

You Hilarity supporters talk about the difference between a doer and a talker. Read this: Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's
Really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6yrs. - and
another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 -
twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years. These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress
www.thomas.loc.gov , but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton's bills are, more
substantive.
16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the facts straight from the Senate Record.
Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.
During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored
another 427. These included the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government
Ethics Bill, - became law, The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096. An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.
He's not just a talker.
He's a doer.

Hillary Clinton is the Walter Mondale of 2008. A solid respectable loser with a lot of seniority and pull in the Democratic party hierarchy. Obama is the new Bill Clinton for 2008, Hillary Clinton is not. Like Bill Clinton, Obama is a self-made politician who comes from a common background - not a relative profiting on the family dynasty. The people who want a Clinton political dynasty are absolutely mistaken about what it will be like to actually have the Bhillary circus back in town.

I am absolutely shocked. The media is not paying enough attention to Hillary, the loyal "stand don't kneel by your man" wife. Well, the media needs to start following Hillary around and plying her with questions. I'm sure that there are many of us out here in the real UNBIASED world that would like to hear the media ask Hillary why she did not use her influence to get Bill to REALLY focus on capturing Osama bin Laden. He'd been running around since 1993....ObL I mean...oh well, never mind..

I'm amazed so many Clinton faithful are now blaming the media for the obvious miscalculations of the Clinton campaign. The media prematurely anointed Clinton the frontrunner in 2007, hyping her eventual nomination as virtually inevitable before a single vote had been cast. By doing so, the media basically performed as shills for Clinton in attempting to reinforce this "inevitability" argument.
But beginning in January 2008, individual voters at the grass-roots level had their opportunity to speak and to cast their ballots. The Clinton campaign was ill-prepared for a 3rd-place Iowa finish and its aftermath.
Both the mainstream media and the Clinton campaign failed to realize that many Democratic voters wanted to move beyond the polarized politics of the past two decades in American politics and found the notion of re-fighting the political battles of the 1990s all over again as a prospect without reward. This prospect of a 1990s redux led many activist Democrats to conclude that Clinton was a weak general election candidate as she unites the Republicans and polarizes the electorate as no other Democrat is capable of doing. This opened the door to alternatives.
Many Democrats were also unwilling to support Clinton, who had so willingly supported the ill-advised Bush war in Iraq. To this day, Clinton fails to renounce her vote to authorize this war which has cost so many young American lives and bloodshed without any tangible positive results. The extent to which much of the progressive grass-roots activist base of the Democratic was alienated from Clinton by her pro-Bush Iraq war position eluded both the media and the Clinton campaign until very recently.
It is Hillary Clinton's record and her lackluster campaign, ill-prepared for the serious challenge mounted by Senator Obama, which are costing her the nomination. We stand poised to see Ohio and Texas deliver a knockout punch to the Clinton hopes precisely because a majority of Democratic voters do not want Clinton as their nominee.
Why do so many have such a difficult time understanding the obvious? This campaign is as much about rejecting Hillary Clinton as it is about embracing Barack Obama. That is not intended as a denigration of Senator Obama, who has done much to energize and mobilize the Democratic electorate. It is merely a statement of fact that the extent to which many Democrats preferred a candidate other than Clinton as their Presidential nominee has been underestimated throughout this campaign.

All this crap about the media doing a hit job on Hillary smacks of sour grapes!
Obama is under the same scrutiny as any other candidate. When Hillary won California, New York and New Jersey, I never heard any Hillary supporters decrying of any media bias or foul play. When the American voters turn out in droves and let the whole world know that Hillary (or is it Billary?) is history, suddenly the media becomes the scapegoat for failure of a spentforce.
Really, who next you guys will blame when Hillary receives the inevitable drubbing in Texas and Ohio?

UWBizKid-
While I'm a bit disappointed with Michelle's statement, I too can honestly say that this is among the first few times in my life that I have been truly proud of my county on a national level. I have heard this from many people actually, both in Nevada and California.
As to your claim that she's a "hag," let's raise the level of discourse here. If you have issues with her, make a case based in logic, not based on your assessment of how she looks. Grow up.
As for your comment about her loyalty to her husband "defining" her loyalty to her country -- what is this supposed to mean! LOL! Does this mean that Bill's infidelity to his wife means he was disloyal to his country?! If so, I don't want him anywhere near the White House then either!
Quite frankly, if Barack gets the nomination, I hope that he stands behind his public financing promise in the general election if McCain holds up his end of the bargain. He'll still win because he is much, much more capable of organizing a motivated volunteer base.
Stay in school bizkid, you've got a lot to learn.

Yeah right! Now the NYT wants us to take our eyes off of two things with the Obama campaign. First they want us to forget that for the first time Michelle Obama is "really proud of the United States in her adult life!" Wow what a revelation. And he thinks I want her near the White House? No thank you!! She's a hag I don't want close to the white house with her talking through her nose and pity party.
In all of Hillary Clinton's years she has never once done anything but devoted her life and loved her country! She believes in her country and is LOYAL! Her loyalty to her husband defines her loyalty to the nation and her faith in God is strong. It would have to be to put up with a woman as despicable as Michelle Obama.
Next, the NYT wants us to forget that Obama made a promise not to take anything but Federal Campaign funds in the General Election. Now that he wants to do what other Politicians do "Break Campaign Promises" the New York Times and the Carolyn Kennedy's of the world are trying to bury these two things. Nice try, but some of us have more sense!

Well, if Obama gets the nomination you can count out those bread and butter democrats like me too! No amount of unifying is going to work. In my state, Washington State we had a real test. On February 9th, the purported start of Obama's momentum, and he had what they said was 68% of the vote in the caucuses. It was a free forall. Any one could come and bring their kids without proof of anything. There were people who had admitted they didn't even live in the area and they just happened to register in the precinct to vote for Obama.
February 19th we had a real Primary and guess what, that commanding 32% point lead dwindled to 2% yes, Obama weighed in at 49% and Hillary was 47%. But guess what, they didn't talk about the protest vote from who? Old time voters, the likely Hillary voters who protested the OATH THAT DNC AND REPUBLICANS dreamed up. Why? because of the free forall at the caucus that magically gave Obama a 32% lead.
What people like me want to know is why all of the sudden in these open caucus states Obama is leading by 32% when you cast a real vote in the same state and he can't win considering the 250,000 protest voters were likely Hillary voters and she had 47% of the vote in Washington State!
So that is when he began his momentum. What I want to know is why isn't the media asking why did that number in Washington State drop 19% for Obama? Was it Buyers Remorse? Was the shine off the new car? Did the finally kick the tires and the wheels came off? Or was it the fact that some one came in from the outside who didn't belong in those precincts outside of Seattle to begin with?
This is why you have Superdelegates and a firewall at the top of the Democratic Party. To protect the best interests of the nation and the party. No one has percentage points change that dramatically in 10 days!!! They can't put that one in the spin cycle and spin the "You are all wet" out of it!

We are going to hear a lot about "experience" for the rest of this year. What is experience in politics? The great number of "experienced" members of Congress taking early retirement or already either under indictment or convicted, tells me that perhaps it is not necessarily a positive thing in politics. I would prefer vision, and maybe a touch of idealism tempered with reason. It has been a long time since I have seen those qualities in a candidate, and its refreshing to see again. We are a great country, and should not allow small people to run us down. I'm an old guy now, but my message to the young people of today is that this is YOUR country... take it and make it into something you can be proud of. Engage in this process, and stay engaged. Terror cannot destroy us, but apathy can.

Either Obama is going to make a difference or he is going to fall flat on his face. Why a black man at this time in our country's history would want to be the President of the United States of America I can not understand. Either he is dumb, wants to politically end any hope of ever coming back to politics or maybe Obama thinks he can actually make a difference. If by some miracle this guy gets elected, many people will love it if he fails miserably and they will take great pleasure in that. I still believe the odds are heavily against him becoming President. Regardless of who wins black, white or female my hope is this country succeeds because Americans should chose to love America more than indulging in any hate for blacks, whites or females. Our country is at a cross road and hopefully the right person for the job will take us in the right direction whomever that is.

The illegitimiate media did great harm to a great patriot: Hillary Clinton.
Now our nation is faced with the horrid future of awaking in a nation where our "democratic party" nominee may be a man who:
took money from terrorists to run his campaign,
bought a home worth 1.6 million dollars in a dirty land deal from a slum lord in Chicago,
who plagarizes speeches from great men: MLK, JFK, RFK, Reagen and WJC without attribute,
who is all hot air in an ill-fitting suit,
promises, promises and cannot deliver because he does not vote in session and when he does votes present.
All because the illegitimate media "created" a candidate and the sheep of our nation have followed him to slaughter.
God help us all! Since Obama never references, reverences or mentions God this may be the last time I will be allowed to do so aloud if his sorry behind becomes President.

So much for McCain being too old, at least for some things...The Times should not have bothered, he has no chance of beating Obama.

Well, I am a democrat who is going to vote for McCain. The main stream media did Hillary in. I was disgusted by the partiality towards Obama. Till Cindy Mccain teased Michelle Obama, the main stream media ignored her faux paux. Shame on the media and the democrats for they way they are treating Hillary...

The issue about the loan from the Iraq businessman and the purchase of his $1.6 million home was covered on ABC and Obama refused to appear or answer questions. I guess he wanted to check with everybody and make sure they told the same story. So I guess it was true. Not good.
He does mention God a lot, but neglects the Muslim part. The Muslims have the same God we do, they just see his plan differently. His father was a Muslim, his stepfather was a Muslim who put him in a public Muslim school and took him to mosque. I think his mother was a non-practicing Christian/agnostic? His grandparents raised him mostly and were likely non-practicing Christians from what Obama says. I understand this from things he has said while in Illinois and on the campaign trail. He became a committed Christian about 20 years ago. This seems to coincide with his political aspirations. Just like with George W. He was "saved", too, when he decided he wanted enter politics.
Then there's Mrs. Obama who wasn't proud to be an American with all that America has given to her. Now they are rewriting history, what she meant, what she didn't mean and so on. They are trying to tell us what we heard, but I heard what I heard, I saw what I saw and nothing will ever change it. I would rather have Bill Clinton in the White house than Michelle Obama anyday.
