Drum Roll, Please: Nader Picks a Runningmate

Ralph Nader (R) listens as his newly announced running mate Matt Gonzalez, a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, speaks at the National Press Club in Washington February 28, 2008. (Reuters.)
By Dana Milbank
Oh, the suspense.
Ralph Nader (I-Harold Stassen), beginning his third long-shot run for the presidency, called a press conference for noon today at the National Press Club to announce his running mate. To add to the intrigue, Nader aides teased those arriving by handing out sheets of paper identifying the vice-presidential candidate only as "?"
Nader entered the room. Aides removed the duct tape covering the campaign poster on the lectern -- revealing the running mate's name. Drum roll, please.
"Nader/Gonzalez '08" said the poster.
Baffled silence in the room. The former Green Party nominee had hooked up with President Bush's former attorney general?
Actually, it turned out to be rather less exciting than that. Nader's choice wasn't Alberto Gonzales but another son of Texas, Matt Gonzalez.
"I'm not a familiar face to the Washington press corps," the Nader runningmate admitted. Nor to many other people. He's a former member of the San Francisco Board of supervisors. He lost a race for San Francisco district attorney. He lost a race for San Francisco mayor. And now, he's ready to put that background to use for his biggest challenge yet: losing a race for the vice presidency.

Attention perennial candidates and people who just feel that they should be president such as John Edwards and Mike Huckabee respectively: Change your ways or this could be you in the future.

OMG! Thank God a REAL Democrat from the Fabled "Old School" has finally arrived!
NOW, the people who were about to settle for either Billary, or Obasama have a REAL Candidate to Vote for! ;~)

A selection from Nader's dickipedia entry..
"Ralph Nader (born February 27, 1934) is an author, lecturer, political activist, on-again/off-again third-party presidential candidate, and a dick.
He is also known for seriously cock-blocking Al Gore in 2000. Nader hopes to repeat this feat once again this election cycle, no matter who wins the Democratic nomination. And yes, even though she's a woman, Hillary Clinton can totally still get cock-blocked. "

Nader is looking pretty good these days. Of course, he hasn't got a chance , but I would rather look at his face than the one I just saw of Georgie Porgie, the # 1 GOOFBALL that was taken by reporter at Press Conference Thursday. It is a riot!. Mr. Mean and no brains. Photo says it all!
As for McCain - ugh! HILLARY, THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN SAVE THIS COUNTRY FROM ALL THE IDIOTS TRYING TO MAKE FOOLS OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND THE CONSTITUTION. VOTE FOR A TRUE AMERICAN 'HILLARY CLINTON'.
and lets get on with it. The rest of these jokers, are just that JOKERS!

A lot of us have been so focused on Nader as a spoiler we've missed the most important reason not to vote for him or even take him seriously as a candidate: He would make a lousy president.
That's right, folks. His consumer advocacy notwithstanding, he has clearly shown that he has neither the judgment nor the skills to lead our country in a way that would benefit us.
His strategy for helping us so far has been to run for president, which he has already done four times before now in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. He has not succeeded or even come close to succeeding in any of those races, nor has his candidacy in any way improved the conditions he said he wanted to improve. By his own admission, corporations are more powerful now than they ever have been.
Even without conceding that Nader is at least partly responsible for Al Gore's defeat in 2000, he and his supporters would be hard-pressed to deny that his running-for-president strategy did not work in 2000. His candidacy did not achieve its stated goal in 1992, 1996, 2000, or 2004. Yet, he is using the same strategy again.
Why would anyone want to support someone who had a bad idea 16 years ago, tried it with overwhelmingly negative results 4 times, and now wants to try it again?

So which is it: Nader is an insignificant gadfly not worthy of media attention or he "handed the 2000 election to Bush?"
All you Dem whiners need to get over it and clean up your own house before trying to fix other's.
If the Dems are worried about losing votes to Nader, perhaps they should address the issues he talks about instead of attacking the man or trying to keep him off the ballot (how very Republican of you).

Sorry Vas.Feng, anybody who looks at 2000 and doesn't see that Nader handed the election to Bush would look at Fox News and call it fair and balanced. We wouldn't have had Kerry running against an incumbent Bush if we never had an incumbent Bush in the first place.
It makes no difference to write about all of Nader's life accomplishments or his stands on important issues. Personally, I agree with nearly everything he says. I also agree with the guy I have coffee with every morning at the corner shop. But Nader makes a fool of himself running time after time (I've seen two articles that say this is his 4th run) just to make the point that in a democracy, anybody can run.
Was there really no difference between Gore and Bush? I'm living in the anti-matter world if there's no difference between those two. Is there really no difference between Obama and McCain?
There are only two possible results from Nader's campaign: 1. He gets less than the .3% of the vote he got in 2004 and further diminishes the respect people used to have for him, or 2. In some state where the vote between Obama and McCain is razor thin, Nader takes enough votes to throw the state to McCain.
Either is a sad result.

Ralph,Keep on fighting to end this insane war and bring our people home. Hold the politicans feet to the fire! You've been out there making speeches, doing interviews and writing articles and have written at least three books in the last 6 years. And you've been writing weekly commentary on the things that really matter, at www.nader.org .The question is where has the Press been on these important matters you discuss, where have the "Talking Heads" been on the war profiters? and their disregard for innocent human life? The population is too busy being entertained and watching Sporting events to get involved, they take the EASY route and don't bother to think, settling instead for snippets and quick slogans. Knowing what' s going on TAKES WORK, in a Corporate controlled State.
Thank you Ralph, for all the good things you've done to protect the PEOPLE of this Country. Amazing how quickly they forget, or perhaps they just don't know. Almost everyone's lives, or that of friends and relatives of theirs, has been improved and made safer because of you, Some wouldn't be alive today, if not for Ralph Nader! Their minds have been intentionly bombarded with with Corporate propaganda and the Democrat Party scapegoating machine. Obama and Clinton should be ashamed of their comments regarding you. They continue the DNC scapcoating myth. thank you for your great and continued service to your fellow Countrymen. America will never ever be able to repay you. More power to your ideas. www.votenader.org...All the rest of you out there, buckle-up! .... Sebastian McGarigle

Thank goodness someone else realizes that the top 4 Presidential candidates are just MORE of the same and do not represent real change. We need a real change. Nader and Gonzalez are sincere and consistent in their talk about change. Do you really think that Obama/McCain/Clinton/Huckabee are really going to change anything? The top 4 candidates talk a good game but we need more than better management and fancy oration. We need different ideas and solutions that address the real problems. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader asking questions and raising issues would BOTH shake things up ...... and goodness knows we need it BADLY. The economy is tanking, we are spending ourselves into bankruptcy both at home and abroad, the Patriot Act is still here with us, the war in the Middle East that is maiming children, immigration is a disgrace , and the Federal Reserve's policies are NOT helping. We need someone to raise the issues that need facing. Ron Paul and Ralph Nader may not win but they will MAKE the Dems and Repubs talk about reality, as well as make detailed and specific proposals. Thank goodness we live in a country that allows for open debates from everyone on ALL the major issues. Our current Congress and President are in my opinion quite clueless. They are caught up in a system controlled by the military/industrial/financial complex that is leading us to ruin. The common man is going to get screwed if we do not wake up soon. Go Paul and Nader!!
I for one would like to see a debate among Ron Paul, Kucinich, Gravel, AND Ralph Nader. I do not care if the top 4 show up. The top 4 say nothing of importance any way, or better said; they say nothing that they will remember after the election!!

I used to think that Nader played the spolier in 2000 election. Then again 2004 happened and democrats lost...again.
I don't understand the supporters of democrats and their penchant for blaming others. If Mr. Nader is so irrelavant that this news should not even be published on this news site, then why blame him for your losses?
I happen to take some time recently to know 'facts' of this man before passing judgement. The man is not married, doesn't have kids, etc; has spent a life time dedicated to giving voice to millions of voiceless Americans (PS: For those of you that think that you have your voices heard because you can blog somewhere on internet, here's a news flash - where it really matters in your personal lives, you can't do a squat against vested interests; be it wiretaps, food supply safety, or investor protection).
Instead of fighting an establishment that doesn't offer viable choices of candidates that have intellectual clarity and moral underpinnings, supporters of democrats have become sorry apologists for a party that treat middle of the road, voting Americans, as some kind of morons.
If you and your party don't have any convictions to lead by; why keep blaming a guy who's not taken anything from the system but has given everything he's got and inspired others to give some more, so an alternate view point can be heard?
What's logic here? - democrats need to win because 'democracy' has to be 'reinstated', country has to be 'saved', etc from bushies and right wing.... oh btw, while doing that we don't want anyone exercising their democractic right to stand in an election because we're afraid what they have to say may resonate with a minor segment of the society and those few people who want to think on their own might stop us from getting elected?
Multi-party system is actually healthy for democracy. Acrimonious, fragmented... may be but at least it doesn't 'disenfranchise' a segment of population that they don't vote at all.
You have a problem of fundamental convictions, my friends. In marketing parlance, democrats are a 'me too' product and keep wondering why they are not market leaders. There are no compelling reasons to switch brands... at least for the crucial 1% in the middle. At least in 2000 & 2004.
Leave Nader Alone. If anything, let there be a fight to get his views heard as part of all the debates. Let him fail on his own merits, ideas and words. At least then we can say, there's at least one party that stands up for 'democracy' in this country.

I suppose Ralph Nader has a right to run for presidency just like anybody else off the street. This is a great country. However, unlike his first run, and much less his second, this third-time ill-advised attempt has zero media value; they should stop covering his candidacy. What is worth discussing in the media is the irony of how his first-run for the presidency helped to produce a White House that gave us 8 years of policies that have done just the opposite of what Nader would have wanted for the environment and the consumers. I am so disappointed by Nader who once was a hero for so many people. Now he has become just a political buffoon.

I agree with the previous poster. Why does the press even cover this guy. Why cares? Why should the press follow this story anymore then if I decied to run. Rediculous. How does he even get enough signitures to appear on the ballots in various states. I think the post shouldn;t even run this story.

Is this news?
Lemme guess he's going to campaign on the notion that Obama and McCain are the same. Ha. Just like Gore and Bush. LOLOL. Fell out of chair LOL-ing so hard.

I would like to call a news conference to announce that I will not be running for president this year. I may however change my mind if Jimmy Carter asks me to be his running mate. Or if Hillary asks me. Or if oBaMa asks me. Especially if Ralphy asks me.
Perhaps we could pick a candidate by drawing their soc sec # out of a hat.
What a good idea......
