For McCain, a Different Kind of Grilling
By Michael D. Shear
PAGE SPRINGS, Ariz. -- If he loses the presidency, Sen. John McCain will have a career as a weekend barbecue chef to fall back on.
At his weekend cabin just outside Sedona on Sunday afternoon, McCain took a break from campaigning and grilled baby-back ribs and chicken for three dozen reporters, some staffers and a few friends from the Senate.
Dressed in jeans, an L.L. Bean baseball cap, sunglasses and a white sweat shirt with a cheesy picture of his family on the front, McCain held court as he does almost daily aboard the Straight Talk Express.
Except this time, it was about meat.
Ribs, to be specific. He gets 'em at Costco -- the big slabs of pork ribs. And he slaps them on the grill at the lowest possible temperature. Any hotter, he says, and the meat cooks too fast.
His secret recipe is a dry-rub concoction that consists of one-third salt, one-third pepper and one-third garlic powder -- and he pours it on. But the real trick, he says, is the fresh lemon juice that he squeezes onto the ribs repeatedly. Keeps 'em juicy.
The afternoon barbecue for the press was on the record -- sort of.
Tape recorders were prohibited (though a few popped up.) Pictures were not allowed for publication. There were no television cameras. And McCain's aides kept urging reporters to put away the notebooks.
The idea, McCain said, was to allow reporters to get to know him and his staff under less stressful circumstances. (The fact that the press spent the weekend at a resort called Enchantment where many sipped wine and enjoyed lengthy deep-tissue massages probably contributed to that feeling.) In addition to the press, Sen. Lindsay Graham, McCain's best friend in the Senate, was there, as was former Texas senator Phil Gramm, Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and Charlie Black, McCain's top political adviser.
In addition to the ribs, McCain grilled chicken, while a caterer added hot dogs, pasta salads, beef tamales, hamburgers and sausages. For dessert, the assembled crowd munched on cookies and brownies.
McCain's cabin sits in a canyon along the Oak Creek, which was running fast Sunday, McCain explained, thanks to the snow melt from Flagstaff. McCain owns several other houses on the property, which stretches along both sides of the creek.
There's also a fishing pond -- home to a 20-pound catfish McCain says routinely finds a way to snap his fishing line.
And there's a nest of black hawks just past the tire swing. One year, McCain said he watched as the mother hawk taught her baby to fly.
A little farther on is a dying limb of a tree covered with little holes. McCain called it a "woodpecker condominium."
If McCain wins the presidency, his property here will no doubt become the latest presidential retreat -- the equivalent of Ronald Reagan's Santa Barbara ranch, George W. Bush's place in Crawford, or the first President Bush's Maine retreat. Bill Clinton didn't have a property like that but managed to vacation at the Vineyard with friends frequently.
Inside his cabin, McCain has Navajo rugs on the walls and floors, a powered telescope, and a large painting of the Grand Canyon. One wall is covered with editorial cartoons. Others have pictures of his family.
McCain's aides said the three-hour gathering was intended as a "social event," not a glorified press conference. And by and large reporters agreed to those rules, asking him substantive questions only a few times.
The lighthearted mood is likely to fade quickly if he gets enough delegates to lay claim to his party's nomination in contests in Texas and Ohio on Tuesday. As the nominee, he will almost certainly be on, rather than overseeing, the grill.

Waaahhhh, The Reporters got some "Beef"!
LOL! What else is there to report? McCain gets to kick back, watch the Dims in a Legal Shark Feeding Frenzy, and look forward to Tuesday when al-Huckleberry is tossed on the Coals! :-)
Hey Senator, Mas Cervezas, y mas Puro de Cana en la Margaritas, Por Favor Senor!
La Comida es Muy Bueno! ;~)
See, I can live with Hispanics! It is CRIMINAL Employment, by Criminal Employers I have the problem with! :-(

The reporters who took part in this event should be ashamed of themselves! Accountants auditing a company could not in good conscious take part in an event sponsored by that company, and I see no reason why reporters should not be held to the same standard. This was not a grey area as McCain's request that substantive questions be kept to a minimum was a clear sign that he was trying to buy good press. If the Fourth Estate is to properly conduct its duties, it needs to maintain at least the appearance of independence.

This is disgusting! Reporters covering a campaign are allowed to accept this kind of largess from their subject? And it's reported here as if there's no potential problem.
I'm sure reporters aren't allowed to accept the gift of a weekend retreat from a corporation that they're covering-- why is it allowed from politicians?
Doesn't the Washington Post have rules about this kind of thing?

This is one of the most offensive and sad pieces that I have ever read about politics in this nation. Any self-respecting reporter seduced into this event should immediately take him/herself off McCain's campaign beat. All credible news organizations should pull any of its reporters who showed up to be schmoozed and bribed by McCain largesse.
Unfortunately, this depicts so much of what's wrong with press coverage of the election. The reporters see themselves as part of this elite, pampered club where only personality and socializing matters & they can be easily bought. So much for the actual issues that make a difference in the lives of Americans....
I wonder if any of the wined & dined reporters will ever bother to ask McCain why he flip-flopped on torture, of all things???
This is truly repulsive...

This article perfectly illustrates disgraceful behavior of the media. Accepting this sort of wining and dining is an ethical minefield. Shame on all of them.

Mr. Shear: How much longer do we have to put up with this man-crush you and other "journalists" seem to harbor for Mr. Straight Talk?
Posted by: mgorman1 | March 3, 2008 6:31 PM
Nice to know the mainstream media is keeping up its wall of 'objectivity'. And they wonder why their readership declines...further...and further....down......

It seems like the journalists here are getting too close to the person they're supposed to cover. It is their responsibility to provide the public with useful information that will help us make an informed decision in November, and John McCain's 'secret' barbecue recipe hardly qualifies. This is simply shameful.

John McCain can always set up his grill at the open-air market in Baghdad he last visited, and "walked freely" through on 4/1/07!
Posted by: ErikW65 | March 3, 2008 2:26 AM
Well, at least unlike Obasama, Senator McCain did not announce he was going to have Taquitos or Fajitas, prior to having BBQ!
Hint John Boy, wrap the Ribs in Foil to keep them moist!
Then, Grill up the Corn on the Cob, in the Husks!
Next serve up Margaritas to the Press con Pura de Cano! ;~)
Posted by: rat-the | March 3, 2008 2:04 AM
McCain certainly isn't on the grill in this puff cake promo Mr Shear concocted. While the media grills Obama and Clinton, Mr McCain gets a free ride. What was all that crap about Obama getting it easy? Ah yes, the way to a reporters heart is through his stomach.

John McCain should consider remaining on his canyon hideaway; at his age the mind and body are not the same as they were some years ago.
Having served in Afghanistan and Iraq, the politics of the Republican Party to shield Bush from the corruptive nature of the WhiteHouse tactics at fighting in those countries have cost America dearly. And, McCain has been the main supporter. Afghanistan is being lost because US forces were directed to Iraq instead of remaining in country to finalized killing the people responsible for planning 9/11. I know, because I was in Afgh in March of 2003 as many of our qualified people were leaving.
Iraq was a fraud upon the world..but, moreove, a terrible horrific moment for almost 4000 of our dead..and the thousands of wounded and maimed soldiers/Marines..and the perhaps ten of thousands of walking wounded with serious problems with brain injuries resulting in complications of PTSD. All this because Bush et al did not do their collective "intelligence homework"..and Bush wanted to secure energy resources in Iraq. Something few talks about except in the ranks of those who must beat the doors in everyday in the hell call Iraq.
Remember, 2007 was the deadliest year of all...yet the WhiteHouse calls the surge of 3000 additional troops a massive success.
Well, ask the Brit's in Basra about their "success"..the same kind of outcome will materialize when US forces begin their retrograde from Iraq..
And all this time...ol' Bush will be on his highly improved ranch in Texas (at taxpayer expense) thinking what a great president he was...damn I hate this guy.

I do like John McCain. I hope he is electable. I believe Obama will be his opposition and he is an unknown and will appeal to many people that are young and have little to lose in the next 8 years but have the influnce to have a profound effect on the enonomy. Make no mistake this election is all about the economy.I am not sure out economy wiil do more than sputter with $100+/bbl oil. It is like a massive value added tax that goes to oil producing States. In my opinion ehonal as we now produce it will only benefit farmers. I think farmer need a break, but read it for what it is. The production will last as long as the political machine wants it to, but I believe it is a net negative and will do nothing to solve the long term energy problem. Conservation will produce more Oil than any other method in the near future.

I may be looking through rose colored glasses, but still tend to be an optimist.
I have never voted for a Democrat, but in the last election I had two choices and voted for what I considered at the time to be the lesser of two poor canadates. I do like conservative principals, but do not endorse the consevative relegious right. I believe in the seperation of Church and State and would much rather see most of these issues left out of politics, unfortunately that is not possible.

The very sleepy press, sleepy story and "take two days off" John
McCain will be called to task tomorrow. I am ashamed that he
will not denounce "and reject" the seedy man he has snuggled up with. Hagge is America's most horrid bigot. But McCain sorely needs the money and this shows he'll doing anything.
Hagge against Catholics???? THAT IS JUST THE TIP of it. I am
thoroughly ashamed! He's going to need the two days of rest and BBQing he just enjoyed. They'll be gunning for him tomorrow.
Unfortunately, the press lost a lot of my respect too - because there are 4 states voting on Tuesday and there was no time to waste making this story BIG TIME!

As a Republican, I could not in good conscious vote for this man. Further, I ashamed of my party for nominating a man who has little regard for the Constitution or our personal liberties. This article does nothing to warm me to Mr. McCain, it is about as sincere as the man himself. Nothing more than stage dressing.
I fear for my country, we have a choice between one of two neo-cons from the "Left" or this neo-con from the "Right". It seems that we have come to a point were we are asked to choose between a socialist slave state or a police state. We are at a cross roads America, this current crop of politicians care little about their country or citizens, they sell us out as quickly as possible for no more than a few shekels and the illusion of power. We are bankrupt, our own chief CPA David Walker has been warning us for years and all the front runners offer is more of the same.
God help us, I suppose we have reaped what we sowed.

How about you all quite complaining like little babies. Haha please get off your high horse...its a BBQ (with great food from what im hearing).....maybe some of you should try it and relax a little bit....this is AMERICA....YOU can do that here.
