Clinton Questions Obama Adviser's Dealings With Canada
For more on what the Clinton campaign is calling "NAFTA-gate," read The Washington Post's Fact Checker.
By Perry Bacon Jr.
TOLEDO -- Hillary Clinton, asked about the state of her campaign with two must-win primaries tomorrow, declared "I'm just getting warmed up." And in a news conference here, she found a way to combine her two favorite arguments in recent weeks: Barack Obama is all talk and no action and the media are biased toward him.
Obama's top economic adviser, University of Chicago professor Austan Goolsbee, recently met with some officials in the Canadian consulate in Chicago. One of the Canadian officials wrote a memo that said that Goolsbee said that Obama's rhetoric about the North American Free Trade Agreement, a controversial trade deal that both Obama and Clinton have slammed in recent weeks as leading to the loss of jobs, was overheated because of the campaign. Goolsbee has acknowledged having the meeting but denied suggesting Obama's rhetoric against NAFTA was only a campaign device.
Clinton accused Obama of doing "the old wink-wink."
"It raises questions about Senator Obama coming to Ohio and giving speeches about NAFTA and having his chief economic adviser tell the Canadian government that it was just political rhetoric," Clinton told reporters. "I don't think people should come to Ohio and tell the people of Ohio one thing and then have your campaign tell a foreign government something else behind closed doors. That's the kind of difference between talk and action and that I've been pointing out in this campaign."
She then challenged reporters to pursue the issue more aggressively.
"I would ask you to look at that story, substitute my name for Senator Obama," Clinton said. "If some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments and basically saying ignore what I'm saying because it's only political rhetoric ... I think it raises serious questions."
With NAFTA very unpopular here in Ohio, the two candidates have warred over who is more opposed to the trade deal. At a rally in Toledo following the news conference, Gov. Ted Strickland blasted Obama for the meeting and noted that Clinton was backed by a man who had fought against NAFTA back in 1993, former House Democratic leader Dick Gephardt. The chief proponent of the deal whom Gephardt was battling was, of course, Bill Clinton, one of the agreement's biggest advocates back them.
Later in the morning, an Obama spokesman called Clinton's charges "an absolutely untrue statement. Obama and everyone on his campaign have been crystal clear in public and in private about his position on NAFTA."
Ohio voters seem not to be picking up much difference between Obama and Clinton on the issue. A poll by the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Sunday showed 52 percent of voters thought the candidates' positions on NAFTA were "basically the same," with 17 percent favoring Clinton's and 15 percent favoring Obama's.
Clinton's news conference was at 8 a.m. here, and the New York senator had already been awake for several hours. She greeted workers at a plant here that makes Jeeps at 5:30 in the morning, telling them, "Hi, I'm Hillary Clinton," and asking for their vote.
She greeted several dozen workers, and a pattern emerged that was visual evidence of the much greater support Clinton has won from women than men in her White House run. Female workers greeted Clinton warmly, stopping, occasionally hugging her and asking her to pose for pictures with them. Some of the male voters did this as well, but many quickly shook her hand (a crowd of reporters blocked any way to enter the plant that didn't mean going past Clinton) and walked by, avoiding eye contact with the New York senator.

She also said: "As far as I know" Barack HUSSEIN Obama is not Muslim (only God knows for sure ; )

And yes...Hillary is picking up a few more pounds and will be singing shortly, not on March 4th or March 5th or March 6th but on Monday March 10th!

"North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement"???
I think someone has been mixing a few too many NATOs with their NAFTAs.
I know this is a blog, but as a news blog featured on the front page of a major newspaper's website, don't editors proofread these postings?

JakeD,
Enough with the Muslim crap. He is a christian for gods sake. Billary is going down, and she wants to take the whole party with her. She has more baggage than Lois Vitton. the fat lady will be singing on Wed. for sure. Obama may not be perfect, but he is also not part of the problem. Do you still want to be part of the problem?

You think it's "shrill" to challenge reporters to pursue the issue more aggressively? She basically told the truth:
"I would ask you to look at that story, substitute my name for Senator Obama," Clinton said. "If some of my advisers had been having private meetings with foreign governments and basically saying ignore what I'm saying because it's only political rhetoric . . . I think it raises serious questions."

On February 8, 2008, a senior Obama campaign official, Austan Goolsbee met with the Canadian consul-general in Chicago, Georges Rioux. The AP obtained a 1300-word memo describing the meeting by a Canadian consulate official, Joseph DeMora.

It has become tiresome to hear from people like Jake D and the rest of the Clinton camp that Senator Clinton's political misfortunes are the fault of the press. Is it the fault of the press that Hillary Clinton squandered every advantage that she had going for her? The Clinton name and the power behind it -- the money -- the double digit lead in the polls. Is it the fault of the press that Senator Obama comes across as likable and gives inspirational speeches while Senator Clinton complains about his rhetoric and then gives uninspiring speeches about her 35 years of "experience" herself? Is it the fault of the press that Senator Obama has won 11 contests in a row? Is it the fault of the press that Bill Clinton put his foot in his mouth and gave the election in South Carolina to Obama? Richard Nixon blamed the press for everything too, and you and the other Clinton supporters are beginning to sound a whole lot like him.
Shakespeare wrote it. "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves that we are underlings."

Last week another major paper stated that the Clinton campaign was going to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Obama.
With both this interview with the press, and all the new 'attack' ad, it now seems that not only are we seeing the kitchen sink but the 'gunk' from the 'trap' of its plumbing.....
And, all of this shows how committed Senator Clinton is to make certain that the Democrats retake the White House & a WORKING majority in the Congress.
Once again, in my opinion, Senator Clinton shows that she will say and do anything to get what she has felt entitled to.
If she is such a great candidate, where is all her papers from her White House tenure, the tax returns?
As Dee Dee Meyers a former Senator Clinton staffer while she was in the White House said Saturday on the Tim Russert show, she had experienced how 'papers' has a way of going in many different directions when released. And, that Senator Clinton should release her tax returns.
Her greatest supporter in Ohio, Govenor Strickland won the office of govenor by smearing his opponent for NOT releasing his tax returns....
Does this show another instance of "Do as I say, not as I do"????????

Let's pursue White Water and Vince Foster just to keep the playing field even. Let's also pursue Bill's impeachment by the United States House of Representatives. Let's pursue why Hillary is not disclosing how she can afford to lend her campaign 5 million dollars! Let's pursue those tax records and her wild spending. Bring it on...Let the pursuit begin. Why wait until after Texas and Ohio?
Posted by: Debmood | March 3, 2008 12:22 PM
Hillary needs to stay in this race until all of these 'hidden bummers' about Barack Obama are flushed out. Is anyone surprised to learn he is not God on Earth? Let's give ourselves time to get the facts and make an informed decision. Do we really want all this stuff to come out after tne nomination and put McCain in the White House? I am an independent and I will not hesitate to vote for McCain should dirty laundry about Obama come out. You are fooling yourselves if you think the Republican party will leave any stone unturned. It was idiocy to have a closed door meeting with the Candaian consulate smack in the middle of the NAFTA debate like he did; why is everyone surprised that it is being questioned?
Posted by: redhiker | March 3, 2008 12:23 PM
I think with the campaign heating up, the rhetoric is flying from both sides, Clinton and Obama will be using any and all information to slam each other, true or not. People are amazingly swayed by rumors and I predict it will have a huge impact on the primary voting. We should all be looking at the ISSUES as our standard for vote decisions.
Posted by: rhull | March 3, 2008 12:27 PM
Sure, this is big news, and all of Clinton's allegations and insinuations are true, except that:
Austan Goolsbee was not an emissary from the Obama campaign, but a professor from the University of Chicago, who was not authorized to share any messages from the campaign.
Goolsbee agrees that the memo cited by Clinton is a "clumsy, inaccurate portrayal of the conversation."
Obama has always said in public and in private that he supports free AND FAIR trade. Goolsbee's discussion with the consul general in Chicago, Georges Rioux, did nothing to contradict Obama's support for free AND FAIR trade.
As always, the Clinton campaign misses no opportunity to twist people's words and distort the record.

SHAME ON YOU, HILLARY CLINTON!!! You are a liar and a con artist!!! Your 2 newest ads are disgusting!!! The truth is...
1. A different Foreign Relations Subcommittee chaired by John Kerry has jurisdiction over Afghanistan. And the full Foreign Relations Committee was the one that held several hearings on the military efforts there.
2. As for being "too busy campaigning" to do their jobs... Clinton and McCain are both using that excuse! McCain was "too busy" to vote on the Economic Stimulus Package. Hillary was "too busy" to vote on Chris Dodd's amendment NOT to grant immunity to the telecomm companies and protect our civil liberties AND "too busy" to turn over her income tax returns (which we all know we will NEVER SEE).
You are such a snake!!! Insinuating that Obama is serving his own interests at our expense while you do more of that than anybody! And NOT defending him as a devout Christian, which you know very well he is!!! You are a lowly, loathsome creature.
Please drop out now before you completely destroy our party!!!

I wonder why comments from someone other than Obama is supposose to matter so much, especially considering it came in a close door meeting in another country.
Also, here's a reality check, a campaign does heat-up the rhetoric on issues and I think everyone understands that. So the questions I have for Clinton supporters is, is this all you have?
One meeting, which Obama wasn't involved in, where someone tied to him stated the obvious. A campaign blows things out of proportion to what will actually happen.
Please tell me American voters understand that.

Obama's a complete QUESTION MARK. Take away his campaign manager, David Axelrod (the inventor of failed governor Duval Patrick) and there's nothing there.
Obama is the Vanna White of politics. Anyone can project onto him all the lovable attributes they want as long as he mouths Axelrods empty slogans..."We Want Change!..We Want Change!!!...We Can Do It!.. YES WE CAAAAAN!!!"...Sounds more like a Barney TV show than anything else.

There's a good reason why Ohio voters don't see much difference between Obama and Clinton, and it's because going forward, with NAFTA in place, and producing a substantial amount of existing exports from the USA, (albeit not enough, and with issues around the rules to the agreement, and how they are enforced) they both have said they would seek to alter the agreement.
But the people in Ohio read the news, and can also imagine what Canadians and Mexicans are thinking, which is to say that all this talk about how the NAFTA glass is half-empty has probably ruffled alot of feathers.
And so maybe Obama was trying to privately assuage any hurt feelings, so as to not cause damage to the trading going on now with Canada.
Posted by: ErikW65 | March 3, 2008 12:40 PM
Why does Hillary always get a pass when she accuses Obama of doing the very same thing she herself has done - make indirect contact to reassure Canada in the midst of a sincere review and challenge of NAFTA.
This must be the kitchen sink.

I think the critical part of this story is not so much what the candidate's positions are on NAFTA, but instead about Obama's campaign saying one thing in public and another thing behind closed doors. Obama's campaign is largely based on how he will transcend beyond "politics as usual" and will lead instead with hope, honesty and inspiration. Obama claims his strong suit is his ability to unite people with straight talk and exercise good judgment in spite of what is convenient within the realm of political positioning. If Obama's platform is true, this closed door meeting between Obama's top economic advisor Austan Goolsbee and Canadian officials is in direct contradiction with his primary campaign rhetoric. This meeting sounds like the usual political game playing that happens behind the scenes and that is exactly the opposite of how he has presented himself to the American public. Both Obama and Clinton believe in globalization and free trade (both are far from being protectionists). They also agree that NAFTA has not been favorable to certain parts of America, particularly in places like Ohio where thousands of manufacturing jobs have been lost. The Canadian memo has no reason to embellish or misconstrue what was said in the meeting with Goolsbee. The American public and media has been so enthralled with Obama's speeches that they are not realizing that although inspirational, Obama is still a politician and is not always doing what is "right"- he is doing what is convenient. It is worse that something like this would happen in Obama's campaign compared to any other candidate because it seems that his whole campaign is based on his holier than now image.

When I read the heading for this article, my initial reaction was that Obama was stepping on Bill Clinton's deal with a Canadian to setup uranium mining deals with one of the old soviet bloc countries Ukraine. That was a deal Bill Clinton as an ex-president helped the Canadian businessman gain. He went to Ukraine and used his name and power recognition to make deals for businesses in Canada.
Hillary has just turned out to be a cry baby. She cries foul for everything including when Obama farts even though her own actions stinks far more.
She is the biggest flip flopper the democratic party has ever seen, next to John Kerry. She flip flopped on drivers license for illegals, she is flip flopping on NAFTA. On top of that she is pandering to the people of Ohio as if she is for anything and everything Ohioans stand for.

Ladies and Gentlemen:
The fact is that Barack Obama is a politician and a frighteningly adept one at that! Sooner or later it was going to start coming out. This is not bad, it is just a reality check, and no matter the technicalities of words, the contact was MADE and whether Obama knew about it or not, it doesn't matter.
So, she is going to come out stronger than everyone thinks, no matter the outcome, for him to be successful he has to blow her out of the water. After all the money he has spent, the party establishment flanking his side, million member union(s), moveon.org and everything on his side, he should not win by a narrow margin he should knock her out. Only then, if I were her I'd reconsider going on...but I very much doubt he is going to blow her out of the water.
Remember: She has been swimming against the tide: his money, biased media, union(s) endorsements, etc. etc, etc, do you forget? For her to still be in such a strong position is nothing short of a miracle. If she were to lose by a knock out punch by Mr. Obama, he still cannot win without her!
If she manages to win the nomination, although she might need his support his followers are such radicals that they will turn away, especially many of the independents. The will simply not vote. If they vote for someone they don't believe in order to punish someone else, then that is not love of country, it is love of self accompanied by a hideous ego. So which is it, America?

ATTENTION: OBAMA FINANCIAL BACKER REZKO TRIAL STARTS TODAY
MUST READ BEFORE YOU CAST THAT IMPORTANT VOTE!!!
SEE OBAMAS CONNECTION WITH SADDAM HUSSEN AND REZKO!
Land deal 'mistake' piles the pressure on Obama Mr Auchi, leading supplier of arms to Saddam's regime and convicted for corruption in France, the British-Iraqi billionaire lent millions and millions of dollars to Barack Obama's fund just weeks before an imprudent land deal investigation. In addition money transfer from Nadhmi Auchi, Obama used to buy his Georgian mansion in Chicago. Mr. Auchi says the loan, through the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA, was for $3.5 million!!!. Mr. Auchi's money was made doing business with the regime of Saddam Hussein, Mr. Auchi was a leading supplier of arms to Saddam's regime. A former Belgian ambassador to Luxembourg charged that a bank in Luxembourg owned principally by Mr. Auchi laundered funds -- including oil for food money -- for Saddam and other Islamic dictators. Auchi helped French and Italian firms win a huge oil pipeline contract in Iraq, chiefly by paying off Iraqi officials, according to testimony given by an Italian banker to prosecutors in Milan. In 2003, he was convicted for his role in what was then the largest scandal in French history, involving payoffs from executives of the oil company now known as Total to political figures in Spain, Germany and Africa.. The connection between Mr. Auchi and Sen. Obama is cause for great concern in the U.S. The national news media have been remarkably incurious about Sen. Obama's relationship with Mr. Rezko, and his with Mr. Auchi. The Obamas bought the house for $1.65 million -- $300,000 below the asking price -- perhaps because Mr. Rezko's wife purchased from the owner an adjacent garden plot for $625,000. (The sellers deny they offered the Obamas a discount.) The Times of London wondered where Mrs. Rezko got the money to buy the garden plot. At the time, she had a salary of $37,000 and assets of only $35,000, the Times learned. Her husband told a court that at the time he had "no income, negative cash flow, no liquid assets," the Times said. Auchi participated in more than just Rezko's pizza and property ventures, however; he also contributed to Barack Obama's campaign by donating to a 2005 fundraiser through a company of which is wife is a Director. I quote the relevant paragraph from a London Times exclusive: Times has, however, discovered state documents in Illinois recording that the Panamanian company Fintrade Services SA lent money to Mr Obama's fundraiser. Fintrade's directors include Ibtisam Auchi, the name of Mr Auchi's wife. Mr Auchi's spokesman declined to respond to a question about whether he was linked to this business. The donation is significant, obama is the Ill politican mentioned in the following ABC News report on the FBI affidavit filed in US Attorney Fitzgerald's case against Rezko before Obama's political godfather was arrested on Monday: According to an FBI affidavit filed in the case, Rezko sought to get a visa for Auchi to visit the United States by contacting "the same Illinois government official ( Obama)

So what's the big deal? This is small potatoes and easy to diffuse if there is nothing to hide. Clinton's campaign responded to the hint of 'indirect' contact by telling CTV they had immunity to publicly reveal the person's name because she had no knowledge about it. She is being transparent about it and Obama not so much. Why?

I have read a number of Obama supporters posts who just use words like "Billary" "Shriery" "lier". These people are disrespect full to a great leader of this country and are wrong. If anyone is a lier here it would appear to be Obama. How dishonest can you get? You tell Ohio that HRC is responsible for NAFTA and you tell Canada that it is just political position. Obama is a dishonest scammer. I am also amazed that in this day and age men are voting against her becasue she is a women. Do they feel threatened by a women? The comment like shillary is a mockery to all women. I have two daughters and I want them to have the same opportunites in life that men have. Apparently there are a lot of men and women in this country who can;t get used to the concept of a strong women. Well get used to it my friends. HRC is going to pull this off and be our next President. She will make a great President and the country will be better off for electing her. Bye bye Obama. Also I generally like Obama. He is however overly ambitious and expereince light. He was elected to the Senate in 04 and decides to run for teh Presideny a year later. Wouldn;t it be logical to learn the role of Senator before you run for President. Ophra got alittle ahead of herself. And please the IRAQ VOTE thing does not qualify him to be president. He wasn't even a Senator to make the vote!

Posted by: jack9 | March 3, 2008 01:22 PM
Let Hillary pursue these matters, White Water, Vince Foster and Peter Paul ,Peter Paul, Peter Paul just to keep the playing field even.
I would truly like to know why the News Media has not publicized the Peter Paul FRAUD case that Hillary is currently involved in. Actually it's Hillary and Bill.

People have to stop putting their own political endorsements before common sense.
Regardless of what words were exchanged here, the Obama campaign flat out denied it and even falsely claimed the story had been retracted. Now, with a "leaked" memo of the meeting, the story changes into that of a meeting happening only there was miscommunication. Be ignorant if you want to, that's your right, but to believe it's some kind of smear attempt by a different candidate or foreign government is nothing short of creating a conspiracy theory to brush facts under the rug. Obama lied! If he didn't know about the meeting, then his incredible "ready on day one" judgment for hiring Goolsbee comes into play.
As far as the allegations about the Clinton campaign doing the same thing, there hasn't been any facts released to support it and the story making the claim even says "low level" members which suggests if it did happen it likely wasn't done with authority. In contradiction, the Obama story, with legs to stand on, directly names his cheif economic advisor (who appears to admit to a meeting after all).
I swear, when people are told the candidate they like isn't exactly honest and has the same shady background as any other politican, they act as if they just found out the world isn't flat!
Disbelief... denial... lashing out at others.
Wake up, lemmings. Stop proving that the US Education system is working as intended by THINKING a little instead of buying glowsticks and waving them like cult followers.
We re-elected Bush, remember? It's time we learn from that mistake by accurately looking into each and every candidate instead of swallowing what they claim to offer without anything to support it.

What right does anyone from his campaign have to call anyone from Canada? He is not the nominee yet and had no right to have anyone speaking for him do so. I also see the MSM is pretty oblivious to the fact that he has also said he is considering putting a republican Hagel as Head of the Dept. of defence. Really nice democratic move there Obama following the republiican mantra that democrats are too weak to protect the US and thereby implying that your own party isn't good enough to take care of the country!!! Go run as an independent and pick all the republicans you want. I resent even the hint that you would pick a republican for this post going against your own party.

Hillary knocked out a lot of Ohio families with NAFTA! A million jobs went overseas! Now Hillary is asking the families that lost jobs to vote for her? ...

If that's true of the Obama NAFTA comments, then she's done the same herself through surrogates.
Most importantly, she told senior military leaders she believed in the surge to Iraq, and also that her comments about withdrawing troops are not what she will actually do when elected.
Let's ask her why she didn't read the NIE when voting on the most critical decision of going to war.

"I'm just getting warmed up."
Slinging mud? Exaggerating? Playing the victim? How about the truth? You don't have the delegates. You aren't the future of the Party. Or, as your man Jack Nicholson once said in a movie, "You can't handle the Truth!!"

When faced with allegations by CTV that her campaign had contacted the Canadian consulate 'indirectly', Hillary denied it and GAVE CTV FULL IMMUNITY to expose the name of the person who made the contact. To my knowledge, CTV has not named anyone. Can't get more transparent than that. Has anyone heard differently and if not, there is no issue of her campaign making the contact.
On the other hand, Obama flat-out denied the contact and now it is confirmed that one of his political advisors did have the meeting at the Canadian consulate in Chicago. This is a problem.

Hillary may some day be known as the President of the U.S.
But she will also have to live with the fact that she is destroying or perhaps it will read that she did in fact destroy the Democratic Party.
This party has become vitriolic.
The party is full of venom. It's sad.

uh...let's see what news stories broke days before each election day...all triggered by the clintons and exploited heavily by MSM...and mine you none of them worked
IOWA - he's a drug dealer - result: won more delegates
NH - drug dealer, muslim and hillary crying - result: won more delegates
NM - more hillary crying, hillary lawsuit agaist caucus, oh and drug dealer, muslim - results: tie
SC - obama supporters are racist they only support black people - results: won more delegates
Super Duper Tuesday - the "snub" as the press put it and all of the above - results: won more states, delegates and votes
Cheseapeake Primary - the "pimp" word - results: won more delegates
WI & HI - supporters are a cult and all of the above - results: won more delegates
Texas & Ohio - all the above, secret conversation with the right wing canadian govt about nafta, red phone scare tactic...
it just wont stop but i guess the media isn't doing its job good enough for the clintons...i think obama is right again when he says if you keep doing the same old thing over and over and expect a different result, then you're crazy...judging from the past 30 + states this tactic will not work either.

Again, more sillyness posted:
Fellow Americans, get over the Iraq vote. The MAJORITY of the Senate voted on that resolution and, according to numerous polls at the time (research as I recommended); up to 69% of AMERICANS supported that resolution in 2002. Why? Because we let all the fear mongering about Muslims and terrorism cloud our own judgment so we could help support an agenda. Now when we see what a mistake most of us made, we lash out wherever we can. Hell, we're still letting them use fear of terrorism against us for agenda purposes (FISA and immunity for telecoms as an example)
The resolution in question wasn't even a war vote. It was to authorize military force if Iraq did not comply with weapon inspections and disarmament. The real truth is, the Bush administration (intentionally) jumped the gun and went in with military force while Iraq was complying. So who do we blame for that? How about Colin Powell, a guy I respected (even though I'm not Republican) who convincingly presented false evidence to the UN to help build support. Of course, Powell, a friend of Bush, resigned from the administration after he realized that he had been used to lie to the world. So how about Bush/Cheney? Or how about blaming we the people for letting it happen by not taking time to educate ourselves?
More proof we stopped thinking independantly and many of us still aren't. It's time we start thinking once again or this country will keep heading down the wrong path.

mthomas722,
Sadly, people like you are the problem right now. Look at what you posted without reading any comments or information.
This story didn't come from the Clintons (in fact the Clinton's were dragged into the story and, at least as of right now, there's no evidence to support it)
This story did not come out the day prior to the election. It came out a week ago.. only you didn't choose to educate yourself so you jump to the conclusion it's a smear tactic.
And the MSM heavily exploits these stories? What world are you in? I'm a solid independant voter and currently support neither of the candidates but I can assure you that most of the Obama-related stories that show potential for truth have hardly been mentioned and definately not reported on. As I stated earlier, the MSM still mentions that he "voted against the war" which is completely false.
EDUCATE YOURSELF!!
Dislike Clinton, Dislike Obama, Dislike McCain, Dislike whoever you want but at least have some knowledge of reality with which to base your opinions.

How outrageous! How bipartisan! How... Clintonian:

No doubt you also deeply resented Bill Clinton for appointing William Cohen, a *gasp* Republican(!), as his SecDef in 1996, right? And you hate the fact that Bill believed that "democrats are too weak to protect the US and... that [his] own party isn't good enough to take care of the country!!!," correct? So why in the world should we put his wife in as POTUS if she shares the same belief that we Dems are too weak to defend the USA? By your reasoning, Bill Clinton was a sleazebag who went against his own party!

What Is Obama Really Going to Do About NAFTA?
Some people blame our weak job market and economic troubles on free trade; however what we really need is smart trade. Hillary Clinton will promote trade that has higher labor and environmental standards. As President, she will ensure that trade lifts up not only American workers, but also workers around the world. She will as President demand a total review of all existing trade agreements and will not sign any new trade agreements until she ensures that trade policies raise our standard of living, and they must have strong protections for workers and the environment. I am the daughter of a former Fisher Body employee and I know the issues of trade and job loss are very important here.
As an Ohioan, I have heard falsely, that Hillary is for NAFTA. Despite false claims regarding Hillary's position on free trade, she always has and always will put the American worker first. Last summer I read Carl Bernstein's biography on Hillary Clinton, who by the way is no fan of the Clintons, that Hillary actually opposed NAFTA behind the scenes. Importantly, in Ohio on February 24, Obama actually stated "I don't think it's realistic for us to repeal NAFTA, that would actually result in more job loss". So I urge you to look at the facts before you cast your vote. To learn more about Hillary Clinton's plans to help the Middle Class visit www.hillaryclinton.com

Statement by the Canadian Embassy
Washington, D.C., March 3, 2008 -- The Canadian Embassy and our Consulates General regularly contact those involved in all of the Presidential campaigns and, periodically, report on these contacts to interested officials. In the recent report produced by the Consulate General in Chicago, there was no intention to convey, in any way, that Senator Obama and his campaign team were taking a different position in public from views expressed in private, including about NAFTA. We deeply regret any inference that may have been drawn to that effect.
The people of the United States are in the process of choosing a new President and are fortunate to have strong and impressive candidates from both political parties. Canada will not interfere in this electoral process. We look forward, however, to working with the choice of the American people in further building an unparalleled relationship with a close friend and partner.

Hillary's backed NAFTA and it was a cornerstone of Bill's White House years. Don't know Hillary's position on "working women", but know Bill's and it's "missionary".

Realy getting desperate aren't you to support Obama no matter what. I don't care what Bill CLinton did then because he is not running for President and we have just run through 8 years of smearing aagainst the dems for not being strong enough to protect the country. Time you got over blaming Hillary for Bill's actions, and if you want NOW to have republicans continue the mantra that Obama can't even pick his own democratic person, then it is NOT what I want to listen to any longer.
Posted by: justmyvoice | March 3, 2008 03:21 PM
Obama on Obama's experience:
"I can't see running for president"
Why have you ruled that out, running nationally?
"You ... you ... know I am a believer in knowing what you're doing when you apply for a job and I think that if I were to seriously consider running on a national ticket I would essentialy have to start now before having served the day in the Senate. Now, there are some people who might be comfortable doing that but I am not one of those people."
http://youtube.com/watch?v=4gexyfVpFMU
He is not one of those people? ... The Microwave Candidate is just an ambitious rookie who will do anything to get the nomination ... even pretend that now he is a seasoned politician!

Hopefully everyone read carefully what the alleged memo from the Canadian official interprets what was said. Even if what he states in that memo is perfectly accurate, which is very much up in the air, the Clinton Campaign has done a heck of a job with their "paraphrasing" to turn the comments into something entirely more ominous than what the memo indicates. This is just the latest in a long line of lies and distortions being used by Hillary Clinton and her campaign to discredit Senator Obama. What is particularly aggrevating about these tactics is that she is leading the charge for John McCain and conservative talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh in attacking the likely Democratic nominee. This is what I refer to as Clinton's "scorched earth policy". If she can't win the nomination, she will destroy the candidate who does and take her party down with her if necessary. Some have even suggested that this is exactly what the Clintons wish to do so that Hillary can launch another bid for the nomination in 2012 without having to worry about facing an incumbant Democrat in President Barrack Obama. As usual, it's all about the Clintons and may the party be damned!
Posted by: diksagev | March 3, 2008 04:08 PM
More lies from Slick Hilly. Has she no shame? Of course not, she's a Clinton, and thus a lying two-faced politician, by definition. And she keeps repeating these lies even though they they have been publicly denied by the Canadian embassy, the Prime Minister's spokesmen, and the minority leader in Parliament (who is calling for the firing of the person who put out these false claims). A real political scandal is brewing in Canada over this attempt by the current right-wing government to influence our Presidential primary. That is what Americans should be outraged about right now, along with Hillary Huckabee being incapable of telling the truth (who now claims she is 'just getting warmed up').
