Pennsylvanians Get Set for 'Iowa on Steroids'
By Krissah Williams
PHILADELPHIA -- Pennsylvania State Democratic Party Chairman T.J. Rooney sipped a cocktail in the Vesper Club off Walnut Street, ready for the political tsunami about to overtake his state.
"I don't think most people know what we're in for," Rooney said, smiling. "And I mean that as a good thing."
His Blackberry buzzed, probably another reporter. It was not yet 5 p.m. and the longtime local politician was on about his 30th interview of the day, as the full attention of the national press corps turns to Pennsylvania, which will now play an outsize role in deciding the Democratic primary.
"It's Iowa on steroids," he said told the Trail, repeating the phrase for the umpteenth time.
Rooney is personally backing Sen. Hillary Clinton, though the state party is staying out of the fray. She's also lined up the majority of the congressional delegation, Philadelphia's Mayor Michael Nutter and -- most importantly popular -- Gov. Ed Rendell and his political machine.
The early battle lines are being drawn in the Democrat's ongoing civil war and Rooney pitched his candidate.
"Pennsylvanians tend to be kind of a hard scrabble bunch," he said. "They don't tend to be swept up in emotion....They are like 'I want to listen to your flowery words, but what the hell are you going to do for me?' That's not to suggest that Sen. Obama won't do very well here and attract large crowds....[but] Sen. Clinton has been met with broad based support."

It is no doubt that this year's campaign is quite extraordinary and unusual. What I find very surprising is the rather lopsided focus on Pennsylvania whose demographics seemingly suits Clinton, rather than a general focus on every single state primary beginning with the next two before Pennsylvania. At a time when every delegate matters, winning a big state by a two % margin and only a handful of net delegate should not be made such a big deal

These questions deserve thorough explanations if Clinton expects to be the nominee, let alone President! Fully VETTED my eye!
• Norman Hsu and his bundling of money for her campaign?
• How "dishwashers, waiters and others" poured "$1,000 and $2,000 contributions into Clinton's campaign treasury?"
• Bill's trip to Kazakhstan with Canadian magnate, Frank Giustra, that netted Giustra $3 billion and Bill's foundation a $131 million contribution from Giustra?
• How powerful foreign donors to Bill's presidential library, such as the Saudis, may pose a serious conflict of interest to Hillary's foreign policy actions as president?
• How Bill's tangled ties to an investment concern of Clinton friend, Ron Burkle, and it's dealings with Dubai may yet, again, threaten to compromise Hillary Clinton's execution of foreign policy as president?
• The fact that with all of these questionable financial dealings, the Clintons have been unwilling to release their tax returns, especially in light of Hillary Clinton claiming that the $5 million she lent the campaign was "her own money?"

I would have thought it would be impossible for Dems to lose the white house this year, but they are going to manage it. Hillary will win the nod, and in doing so, stoop so low and fight so dirty as to remove any remote claim of the moral high ground. It will be ugly. She will lose, her supporters will whine, and we in the Democratic party will come to realize that we could not get our act together to win against even a Republican potted plant.

HRC is wining big without the Black vote.
She doesn't need the Black vote anymore.
She did get
55% to 60% white vote
65% to 70% Asian vote
60% to 65% Latino Vote
She does need Black vote anymore.
The Black Vote is OVER RATED.
Latino vote counts.

Somebody has to take that 3 am call. But I'm loving this no end. First the Democrats laughed at the Republicans for their Florida gaffe; now the Republicans laugh at the Democrats for their own gaffe. It isn't exactly a chinese fire drill but it's a lot like the Keystone(state)Cops.

Right now, Senator Obama has more pledged delegates than Senator Clinton. Regardless of how they were earned, what states they were won in, and any argument about proportionality, that's a fact. It's interesting to see people try to argue against that fact.
Posted by: johndinhouston | March 6, 2008 1:46 PM | Report abuse
Obama supporters really should be more cautious about crowing about the "delegate count".
People may notice that caucuses don't actually reflect the popular will, as shown in the Texas Two Count. Proportionality also has some problems in that regard.
Puts their claim of the moral superiority of "pledged" vs "super" delegates in question.
Never mind me. I like it when Obama supporters make Hillary's argument for her.

I don't believe in throwing insults and I think that Barack Obama would be disappointed by his supporters doing so.
I guess you believe the person who wrote this internal memo which was never supposed to be seen by the public used Obama's name to cover for someone else.
Do you actually believe that?
What would have been the reason?

To TAH1...you should know better. The record voter turnout in all the traditional big Democratic states (i.e. New Jersey, New York, California) that Hillary won also demonstrated Obama had voter turnout that was more than the top two Republican candidates together mustered. To somehow argue that these large traditional Democrat states will turn Republican in the general election if Obama is the nominee is highly unlikely. For you to ask Obama to drop out of the race, when he is the front-runner (in total delegates, pledged delegates & popular vote), and likely nominee is ludicrous!

I went to both of the links you provided.
I did not see anything about Clinton having anything to do with this leak.
If you would just read the actual MEMO that all of this discussion is about you would see that Obama did imply to the Canadian Consulate that the talk about NAFTA was just political rhetoric.

Thank you for the link.. Did you actually read the link that you posted...
It says that the Canadian Prime Ministers Chief of staff, Mr Brodie mentioned Clinton's campaign when he a tried to calm the Press.
But It was actually Obama's campaign who had contacted them and who was in the memo.
It does not say that the Clinton campaign leaked the memo. It says that when the memo came to light the campaign jumped on it, as well they should have.
I hope that Obama supporters go to your link and actually read the article because it shows that Obama's campaign did in fact meet with the Canadian Consulate and did imply that the Nafta talk was just campaign rhetoric.
Here is part of the article:
Mr. Brodie, apparently seeking to play down the potential impact on Canada, told the reporters the threat was not serious, and that someone from Ms. Clinton's campaign had even contacted Canadian diplomats to tell them not to worry because the NAFTA threats were mostly political posturing.
The Canadian Press cited an unnamed source last night as saying that several people overheard the remark.
The news agency quoted that source as saying that Mr. Brodie said that someone from Ms. Clinton'scampaign called and was "telling the embassy to take it with a grain of salt."
The story was followed by CTV's Washington bureau chief, Tom Clark, who reported that the Obama campaign, not the Clinton's, had reassured Canadian diplomats.

ALSO, OBAMA RETURNS REZKO MONEY, HILLARY SHOULD RETURN IPA MONEY!
Sen. Hillary Clinton has declined to return $170,000 in campaign contributions from individuals at a company accused of widespread sexual harassment, and whose CEO is a disbarred lawyer with a criminal record, federal campaign records show.
The federal government has accused the Illinois management consulting firm, International Profit Associates, or IPA, of a brazen pattern of sexual harassment including "sexual assaults," "degrading anti-female language" and "obscene suggestions."
In a 2001 lawsuit full of lurid details, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claims that 103 women employees at IPA were victimized for years. The civil case is ongoing, and IPA vigorously denies the allegations.
"This is by far, hands down, the worst case I've ever experienced," said Diane Smason, one of the EEOC lawyers handling the lawsuit. "Every woman there experienced sex harassment, they were part of a hostile work environment of sex harassment. And this occurred from the top down."
Sen. Clinton's spokesman, Howard Wolfson, told NBC News in a statement that the senator decided to keep the funds because the lawsuit is "ongoing" and because none of the sexual harassment allegations has been proven in court.
"With regard to the pending harassment suit, as a general matter, the campaign assesses findings of fact in deciding whether to return contributions," Wolfson said.

GAME OVER.
Hillary Clinton has proven she can win big in the big states that are the must wins for the Dems in November. It's that simple.
If you can't win Ohio, you can't win the Presidency. In Ohio, HIllARY won all voter groups except the black vote which went to Obama by 86% in Ohio. Obama won ONLY FIVE out of EIGHTY EIGHT counties in Ohio and those 5 counties are where the large black populations live. Obama failed to close the deal.
March 4th proved that Obama is unelectable.
It's time now for Obama to exit the race and for Dems to rally behind Hillary.
Hillary should choose a white male with strong national security credentials to make her ticket unbeatable.

Clinton's real strategy is lie about everything. Ian Brodie, the top aide to the Canadian Prime Minister first fingered Clinton in his verbal leak on Feb 26. He said to Canadian reporters that it was the Clinton campaign that called to say she didn't mean what she said about NAFTA. Suddenly that got turned into Obama and not Clinton. I wonder why? Was it a Clinton smear or a Rove smear? Or did it have something to do with Bill Clinton's connection to Frank Giustra, the guy Bill Clinton went to Khazakstan with. Frank Giustra used to own Lions Gate Entertainment and was a mining billionaire. With Bill Clinton's help (NYT) he got a huge uranium deal right after that trip. Bill Clinton sang the praises of the Khazakstan President/dictator. So how close is Frank Giustra to conservative Prime Minister Harper? If journalists were really doing their job, they would investigate. When it was Clinton who was hypocritical about NAFTA, she lied and made it about Obama. What a republican-like smear.

I think that if you have any real information on either candidate then post the link so that others can check it out for themselves.
That will be much more productive than throwing insults at the candidates.
I understand that people feel strongly about the candidate they support but it should be more about sharing information supporting our view.
I am so shocked at the HATE FILLED posts coming from the supporters of a Candidate that is supposed to be spreading HOPE and UNITY.
When people post hateful remarks it makes it hard to take the information they are trying to get across seriously.
I am supporting Hillary Clinton because I believe she is the Strongest Candidate and I definitely believe that she will be able to win against McCain in November.
I have alot of questions about Barack Obama and don't feel that he has been in the public eye long enough to have those questions answered. I don't know how he will hold up under pressure. I don't know if he is strong enough to stand up to the other politicians in Washington. I do not think that he can win against McCain in November.
I have also seen alot of posts by Republicans who have said they crossed party lines to vote for him in order to get Hillary out of the picture because they also believe he will not be able to stand up to John McCain in the general election. I have no doubt about Hillary's ability to fight....

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama:
Dear Madam, and Sir,
A Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama ticket is what we want. And that is what we need to take back the Whitehouse. We want a smart, tough, idealistic, seasoned veteran of many battles fighting for the American people (Hillary Clinton). With a young, passionate, smart, open-minded, hard-working idealist fighting for the American people (Barrack Obama). The DREAM TEAM!
You are both fabulous candidates. And we, the American people are very fortunate to have each of you. Taking back the Whitehouse is critical for the American people, and the world at this time. And I think the American people have been saying loudly, and clearly that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket is the best way to do this.
I think the American people have made it very clear that they feel Hillary Clinton is the one best able to lead the ticket against John McCain at this critical, and desperate time in America, and around the world. These dramatic comebacks are testament to Hillary Clinton's skill, and experience as a fighter for the American people. They are also a testament to the strong desire of the American people to have both of you fighting for the American people at this time of midnight in America.
Typical of the Clinton's is an uncanny ability to see and understand what the American people want. And then to try and get it for them. Even if they have to go through three political near death experiences to try and get it for the American people. This is classic Clinton's. They are the best I have ever seen.
We are desperate out here. Millions of us are suffering greatly. And tens of thousands of us are dying needlessly every year. Men, women, children, and babies. We need help! As Hillary Clinton said "It's not a game". We need the two of you together on our side fighting for us, and for the American dream for all. Not fighting against each other anymore.
It's time for you Senator Obama to join forces with Hillary Clinton as her running mate so that we can all focus our energies, and resources on taking back America for the American people.
Don't make me hurt you. :-)
Sincerely
Jacksmith...

People DONT know Hillary's strategy. HERE is her strategy: She knows she cant win. Now she is trying to fight for the 2012 election. But she cannot do that if Obama wins. So she wants to make sure he does not get it. The way to get it is to stay in the race and damage Obama enough so McCain can beat him.
Posted by: malamba | March 6, 2008 3:28 AM | Report abuse
The reason Obama is ahead and will stay ahead is simple. He's eloquent, he's experienced and he's got policy plans that are arguably as sound as Clinton's. A president needs to really care about all Americans, be surrounded by the best advisors, make optimal judgements both domestically and internationally, and work with both sides of the aisle towards just and economically sensible solutions. Hillary would be a good choice. But with her it's a choice for a methodical policy crafter, rather than an inspiring figure. With Barack we really get both! What's to decide?

I can't believe the hatred among some dems towards the clintons. Bill is their only successful prez for a long time, in fact, his record even better Reagan's. The world didn't care about Monica, but the dems back away from supporting Bill when he needed most. In contrast to how GOP had supported their prezs in many similar trouble times. Now the same dems ditched their most competent candidate just because some polls showing she may not get as much independent vote as the other guy. I am an independent, seeing the lack of discipline in dems, I don't believe they can govern well. I am going to vote for McCain if Hillary loses. Hillary is real competent but had ran a bad campaign earlier on being afraid to take on the HOPE image of Obama. Seeing how many buy into his empty hope pitch, I know why our country is good for sales people while the nation's declining in competence and slide into ever greater trouble. Whoever think trillions of debt is trivial and not wake up to see the economy reality must be still living in disney world. Hillary would be much better hand to handle the economy and guide the nation back towards the right track. But even she wouldn't be able to cure it all, we are in trouble too deep.

Will Hillary kill hope as she enjoys her reinvigorated spoiler role?
Here she is, a tool of the lobbyists, claiming she is the "people's" choice.
Hillary even refuses to release her tax returns for the past two years, which would reveal the source of her sudden wealth.
If Hillary claims experience in foreign affairs, then let her share responsibility for her husband's immoral inaction on Rwanda, when hundreds of thousands of Africans were slaughtered while the Clinton White House refused to act.
(According to the British Guardian newspaper: "President Bill Clinton's administration knew Rwanda was being engulfed by genocide in April 1994 but buried the information to justify its inaction, according to classified documents made available for the first time. ...
"It took Hutu death squads three months from April 6 to murder an estimated 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus and at each stage accurate, detailed reports were reaching Washington's top policymakers." [http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2004/mar/31/usa.rwanda])
For every comment the Clinton trained seals make about Hillary's favorite target--Rezko--it is important that people remember the reason Jimmy Carter's chief of staff, Hamilton Jordan, called the Clintons our "First Grifters."
Remember their ties to disgraced fugitive financier Norman Hsu?
Remember Bill"s supping at the trough of the emir of Dubai?
Speaking of the Middle East, remember Hillary's silence when Yassir Arafat's wife libeled the state of Israel?
Of course, the media bends over trying to accommodate Hillary; today the MSNBC talking heads explained that they have to tread softly because it is hard to criticise a woman.
National security and the fate of the country are apparently tied to some moronic political correctness from a media that did not exactly cover itself with glory when America was about to go to war.
Of course, today's media establishment cares as much about access to the red carpet as anyone else.
The legendary journalist Edward Murrow would have liked Barack Obama, because he also believed, like Obama himself has said, that cynicism is a sorry kind of wisdom.
Fight back America!
Believe in yourself!

A lot of good candidates have dropped out of this race based on the delegate math, Dodd, Biden Edwards Richards Rudy Romney Tancredo all saw the writing on the wall, they gracefully bowed out.
What we see now is close to antics. There seems to be some 'magical thinking' going on to justify believing that momentum or muscle is going to beat delegate math.
They may be "Super" but these politician (delegates) will not fly through the air or walk on water for anybody. Sometimes in politics the clock just runs out.
Mr. Obama likely won this thing in February. He piled up a 150 delegate lead, by running the 50 State campaign model coined by Howard Dean. This strategy won back the same Congress that the former President lost. Why? - because he mostly thought of winning and keeping the power of presidency at the expense of the party. It was Machiavellian and his greatest sin. Ironically, that was the same mindset of his current Presidential campaign and why it is way behind. He got beat. Its unthinkable that he would try to ...
Magical thinking has its place. Mr.OBA is a great fit to build up the Congressional majorities because of the new voters and excitement he brings to the process, particularly in the Red states. The party will hold what it always holds in the general election, the magic is in expanding the party's base.
He showed good judgment and patience in not going Chicago on his fellow Democrat in response to the negative Republican Style attacks against him in recent contest. After all he is ahead in delegates and looks to at least stay even from here if not increasing his margin.
He has the money and cause to fund a real hands off H group on auto-pilot to compare and contrast with others in the community square. This is also a mater of temperament and chivalry of why he has not done it.
The delegate net from March 4 was not remotely worth getting caught up in ugly politics with a candidate who according to the unspoken rules of delegate math, should have gracefully bowed out.
Long shot catchups and magical comebacks usually happen in Fantasy Land.
Looking at Huckabee's performance as well it must be a place in Arkansas. Maybe its because its a relatively small state that has been the butt of jokes, but these guys from Hope must truly believe they are so special, they can fly. The former president knows how short he came up in office He knows he crashed and burned. Thus he works 'so hard'.
If she wants it, the ongoing primary campaign is Ok. It keeps the light shinning and tunes up the Democrats. It crowds out John McCain and boring Republican snipping. It energizes the base. Plus,
Sen Clinton is alright. If anyone can make the dream come true, she has a piece of the claim...

rat-the-______:
In 1976, the TV networks agreed to a formula to avoid any implication of favoritism in color selections. The color of the incumbent party, initially set as blue for Gerald Ford's Republican ticket in that year, would flip every four years. Consequently, a successful challenger runs again in four years, as the incumbent, under the same color. So in 1992, the challenger Clinton was red on the maps, and in 1996, incumbent Clinton was also red. Challenger Bush, red in 2000, was red again as an incumbent in 2004. But perhaps because the pundits decreed 2000 to be a watershed election, the "red/blue" divide has assumed a broader political significance (at least to pundits), and although the formula dictates that the Republicans should be carrying the blue flag in 2008, it will be interesting to see how the networks color their maps.
Here are some more links on the Red / Blue question.

Those are good points (I disagreed with you about the "logical" joint ticket though), but I think the concept behind open primary is to attract cross-over voters who will vote the same way in the general election too. Not sure if that benefit outweighs trouble-makers, especially those behind the EIB microphone, or how to best deal with that problem and keep the open primary system. As an honest registered Independent, I do appreciate the opportunity the Democratic Party gave voters like me to express a sincere preference for one candidate over another.

Whatever happens to be the outcome of this primary season on the part of the Democratic Party, whoever will be the party's nominee, one thing is perfectly clear: the rules of the game have to be changed so that they are more in line with democratic precepts. It is utterly inconceivable to have both a primary and caucuses in the same state. It is insane to have Republicans and Independents vote in a Democratic primary, etc., etc.
It is ridiculous to have super-delegates if those are not supposed to be independent of popular primary voters.

Why should my State not get ALL the attention for the next 6 weeks, if Hillary and Obama have to campaign in Florida and Michigan? Aren't the taxpayers in those other States upset about having to pay twice? At least in Florida, where all the names were on the ballot, can't the DNC just give them those delegates? Won't any "solution" just encourage MORE violations of the rules next time, as long as they know you have a second bite at the apple? Do they get the same number of delegates they had in January, or do they get the bonus the DNC gives for going later?

PhilTR:
Off topic question if you know -- anyone else who had thought about this, as well, please pipe in -- do you think that the Networks will switch color-coded map to Blue = GOP and Red = Dem this Fall? Or, are the Red States vs. Blue States too engrained?

Americans are doing their own investigation and realizing that Obama has no real substance and his rhetoric is just just demonstrating the lack of polical experience this guy has and the lack of substance when the people demand clear defined plans for his CHANGE speeches. Obama isn't qualified to run this country and he is just as corrupt as any other politician. I sure hope the people in my favorite state of PA follows Texas and Ohio. We can not afford another 4 years of George Bush style of politics and Obama has divided his party & country with his rhetoric. We need strong leadership as President and not someone who is ready to go to war like McCain. I don't like Clinton's position on immigration but out of the 3 candidates she is the best 1 to move this country forward.

Hillary is winng the big blue states without the black vote. Why exactly does she need them for the general election? Just curious.

It's really difficult for me to take seriously an article written by someone named "Krissah". It's like listening to an anchorwoman named "Bambi" and not laughing.
But whatever. Pennsylvania was also the state full of fools who kept voting for Rick Santorum. . . so, I take their "well-reasoned" opinions with a bag of salt.

Well, to be fair, Pennsylvania is the biggest prize left (although I was suprised how many delegates the final contest in Puerto Rico was given). NEITHER Obama nor Clinton have a clear path at reaching the magic number of 2,025 before the Convention. Barring some surprise, Florida, Michigan, and the super delegates are going to decide this race.

"the Democrat's ongoing civil war"

Typically stupid, overblown Washington Post hyperbole.
To think, this used to be a respected newspaper.

Après lui, le déluge
The kitchen sink runneth over.
The fact that many would fall prey to such a desperate, Rovian grab-bag of distortion and misrepresentation brings home a truth that, now more than ever, must be recognized--a truth about us.
As long as we remain susceptible to negative campaigning --as long as we allow inchoate fear and primitive doubt to overwhelm our capacity to understand and check the facts--we will get the winners we deserve-- namely, those who win ugly.
Democracy takes more than participation--a goal we have yet to achieve--it also takes a willingness to apply thought over fear.
We have been trained to respond to fear appeals aimed at the pursuit of electoral success very well over the past 7 years--and at this point, we should begin to become inured to them. In plain speaking: we should wise up.
The Clinton camp has discovered a formula that, at least in the days of its brief burst of novelty, has worked. We can expect a deluge of such tactics in the coming weeks.
However, despite a sink that will likely fill to bursting-- paired, of course, with the conciliatory words that are meant to justify and allow further attacks--we now have time to adjust and evaluate.
We can and should do so.
A campaign that wins in adversity by the use of distortion and fear will govern in adversity in the same manner.
This is the true "red phone" lesson, one that we should remember over the coming weeks. Overcome vague appeals to fear. Pursue their reality. In the face of appeals to induced doubt, unproven "experience", and dark insinuation, tenaciously learn--and vote--the facts."

I see that you're buying the Clinton campaign's "meet me in Pennsylvania" schtick, not noticing that the big "meet me" moment yesterday resulted in a negligible delegate gain for her. And, between now and April 22nd, she's likely to lose that delegate gain right back again in the Wyoming and Mississippi elections. Her strategy is to hype contests in states favorable to her and ignore elections in other states, which works for getting good headlines -- she certainly got them this morning -- but doesn't work for actually assembling the delegates she'd need to win the nomination. She's dead in the water if she thinks another narrow win or two will do the trick for getting the nomination.

Hillary Has Washington Experience! Failed Health Care Reform, chosing Janet Reno, Lani Guanier, Web Hubbell, Vince Foster, William Kennedy, Craig Livingstone, Whitewater and more. Remember the "stolen White House furniture and artwork" that she had to return. There's more, but why kick a dead horse?
