Girl in Clinton Ad Prefers Obama on the Phone

By Krissah Williams
Sen. Hillary Clinton's much talked about campaign ad -- featuring a ringing phone and images of vulnerable, sleeping children -- has been credited with helping her win Texas and Ohio and is now coming under new scrutiny, thanks to the protestations of one unwitting star of the commercial.

The ad starts by zooming in on a sleeping little blond girl in blue pajamas as the narrator intones "It's 3 a.m. and your children are soundly asleep....Who do you want answering the phone?" Cut to Clinton, picking up the phone, working diligently to solve America's problems.

Turns out the little blond girl in the commercial is now nearly 18 years old and has made it clear that she'd prefer to have Clinton's rival, Sen. Barack Obama, pick up the line.

Casey Knowles of Seattle told a local television station this weekend that she was shocked to turn on the television recently and see herself tacitly supporting Clinton. The video footage of Knowles was filmed 8 years ago when she was working as a television extra, and purchased by the Clinton campaign for the ad.

Knowles, who has been campaigning for Obama for months and served as a precinct captain for his Washington state campaign in February, has no control over how her image is used.

"I think it would be wonderful if me and Barack Obama could get together and make a nice counter-ad," Knowles told the interviewer.

DerbyDaddy - you ought to chill out. j.dreczkowski has every right to have, and express, their opinion. It's not like they hid their point of view. Argue with someone on merit, but not this dismissive venture (very clinton-like)...

What we do in America are seen all around the world, our mistakes send messages to people all over the world. We should listen objectively to what other think. It's interesting that some of the folks here are making comments on the stereotypical view of a "dumb blonde". Is the fact that Hillary blonde make her dumb? No, but for this commercial to have an added twist that bites back shows lack forsight on Hillary's part, that by itself should be something to think about. Casey Knowles certainly has the right to state her political views, just like all of us do.
Just my point of view.

Posted by: david.caudle | March 11, 2008 7:06 AM

that dumb blonde probably has more political sense than half of you idiots trying to bash her.

Posted by: demonicxlizard | March 11, 2008 4:34 AM

Hey, J.D. from U.K. -- chill out baby! We would be very pleased if you just butt out of our election on this side of the pond. We can screw this up all by our lonesomes, we don't need help from a yo-yo that votes in the system you got. Besides, you really don't want Hilly and Billy to start up on the sorry record of those dimwits you have in London.

Nobody cares what this bimbo thinks, anymore than they do what anybody in a commercial thinks. Brother!

I respect McCain over Hillary ,being registered democrat, I'll rather vote McCain rather Hillary, at least McCain showed character in denouncing using Mr, Obama middle name for political gain , I do not support his foreign policy.
Character is the essence of great leader, McCain and Obam has that, Hillary and Mr. Bill devoid of such gift!

I don't know if the ad was sold out by her parents, but when a person works as tv extras they are supposed to be paid everytime the ad is shown! If it was sold out then it can be played without getting payed for, check with your parents to find out that information, Wow it would be great if you make anything from the ad put into Obamas Campaign OBAMA 08

Some of the comments here are a bit over the top.

First - Ms. Knowles can't be "sued" for simply coming out in favor of Barack Obama. She's a minor, for starters (and was a minor when that footage was shot) and so isn't contractually obligated to anything at all.

Second - it's news, because it's both interesting (as evidenced by all the comments here), and it's relevant (Sen. Clinton's campaign clearly didn't "vet" the actors in the footage very well; Ms. Knowles is a precinct captain in Sen. Obama's camp. Plus, it's got that "human touch" that make a lot of news stories grab some headlines.

Finally - it's difficult to see how Sen. Clinton can win the nomination without a major blunder by Obama's campaign. He leads her in pledged delegates, total delegates, the popular vote, states won, money raised, and in head-2-head polls against Sen. McCain. Barring the unlikely scenario of Sen. Clinton winning 20-point blow-outs in the remaining states, Sen. Obama will be the Democratic nominee.

In either case, Senators Obama and Clinton are both preferable to John McCain, who not only voted to authorize invading Iraq, he's STILL in favor of it - and is willing to leave our forces there "for 100 years." Whether Sen. Clinton somehow pulls a rabbit out of a hat and is nominated, or Sen. Obama goes on to win, as seems exceedingly likely, it's going to take all of us to stop this Bush/Cheney/McCain trainwreck.

So kudos to both of our candidates, and I'm pledging my vote to our nominee, whether Obama or Clinton, because the alternative is continuing disaster.

What does a "unprofessional model" have to do with the Issues of this election? THE MESSAGE IS EXPERIENCE- READY WILLING AND ABLE TO TAKE ACTION DAY ONE. (no ramp up-or wait till I understand the protocol or policy etc)HILLARY CLINTON IS READY NOW TO SERVE. Wow I like how Kris spins the real issues into "it is about the blonde. " Remember- we have real people in Iraq dieing every day- and people are loosing their houses- and People cant get jobs and health insuance.
I want someone who is experienced. Not a "Oh I will lead you there preacher" Shame on you Krissah Williams. Alot of content in this story.

HOW is this news?

that kinda stinks for hillary clinton

Casey Knowles should be sued for making a disclaimer? Get Real. The original ad was made 8 years ago When Casey was a little girl. The original ad was not political and was made for a railroad company. Clinton unwittingly bought the clip from an archive company not knowing that Casey is an Obama supporter who has worked for his campaign and probably not even knowing her name. So what disclaimer....besides of which we still have the first amendment. Are you Clinton supporters so bloated on Coolade that you think Casey should not have the right to verbally support the political candidate of her choice? personally, I think an Obama rebuttal ad would be Hilliarious.

Posted by: hossplay1 | March 10, 2008 5:27 PM

Irony isn't illegal or immoral, just ironic. In this case, the quickly thrown together ad, using stock footage, could demonstrate a certain lack of attention to detail. The girl isn't trying to stop the ad, she's just pointing out the IRONY that she'a an active Obama supporter who would be happy to take advantage of this IRONIC coincidence to make a, "Hi I'm Casey Knowles and I approve of THIS message!" commercial.

Posted by: thebobbob | March 10, 2008 5:25 PM

I can just imagine the ad:

Casey: 'Hi I'm the girl from Hillary Clinton's red phone call ad (plays with her hair). That was shot 9 years ago and MY how things have changed. That was before 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq, the mortgage meltdown... That's why I'm for Barak Obama, he's the one with the sunny and positive message I like. He's going to fix everything. You go gurl! And why was that phone red anyway, that color is like so last week.'

Dear America,

As a U.K. citizen looking in on this election campaign from the outside I must applaude Senator Obama as both a human being and a man of his word.

Senator Obama has clearly demonstrated an incredible level of restraint, despite the lowest form of political mud-slinging and provocation resorted to by the Clinton campaign.

A level of restraint that would be required daily, by the next President of the United States, the leader of the free world.

I would suggest to the broader American public, and particularily to those States still to vote for their preferred Democratic nominee (Pennsylvania and Mississippi included), that such restraint should never, EVER, be seen as a sign of weakness. This IS strength.

This is a MAN of strength. Senator Barack Obama is a MAN of strength. Senator Barack Obama is a Christian MAN of strength. Senator Barack Obama is an AMERICAN CHRISTIAN MAN of Strength.

I WOULD TRUST SENATOR BARACK OBAMA WITH THE CARE OF MY CHILDREN.

I WOULDN'T TRUST MRS HILLARY CLINTON WITH THE T.V. REMOTE CONTROL, NEVER MIND ANSWERING THE PRESIDENTIAL TELEPHONE AT 3 AM.

The restraint shown by Senator Obama recently, in the face of outright lies and misleading remarks, is indeed the sign of an intelligent, considerate leader, concerned with making the RIGHT decision, and not simply just 'a' decision.

Poor decision making at Presidential level by George W Bush (gun holder) and Mrs Hillary Clinton (supplier of bullets for that gun in 2002) has led to the catastrophe for Americans' that is Iraq.

1. Thousands of brave American lives lost. For what?

2. America,'the home of the brave', relentlessly bombing some of the poorest children in the world from the safety of 50,000 feet. For what?

3. Tens of Billions of American Dollars spent funding No's 1 and 2. Dollars that could have been spent on such lofty ideals as free Health Care for every single American and investment in American communities to create jobs for American citizens. For what?

George W Bush has presided over the horror show that is Iraq.

MRS HILLARY CLINTON FULLY SANCTIONED THIS HORROR SHOW WITH HER INABILITY TO MAKE THE CORRECT DECISION ON IRAQ IN 2002.

Mrs Hillary Clinton's actions FAILED AMERICA and FAILED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, on an unimaginable scale and at a time when it mattered the most. With the blood of those brave soldiers and those children on her hands, can she be trusted? Can she?

I THINK NOT!

The United States' ability to restore itself to former glories must surely rest on the broad, restrained, articulate, considerate, common sense shoulders of Senator Barack Obama.

Mrs Hillary Clinton displayed so much personal weakness and failure on matters of integrity during the Texas and Ohio campaigns that she must surely never be trusted.

Why did she allow her campaign to trot out 'that picture' of Mr Obama?

She is weak, and rested her political fortune and reputation, with that of white supremacists pandering to the lowest common denominator.

SHAME ON MRS HILLARY CLINTON! SHE SHAMED HERSELF, AMERICA, AND HUMANITY BY STOOPING TO THAT INCREDIBLE LOW.

You can only blame so much on a shambolic campaign strategy team.

Mrs Hillary Clinton must accept personal responsibility for the worst example of fear mongering and subliminal racism I have seen in my entire adult life. It was disgusting.

This fear mongering and subliminal racism was designed, constructed and deployed via the media by Mrs Hillary Clinton's campaign to manipulate the free thinking minds of the American public. I know it, YOU know it, and they including Mrs Hillary Clinton KNEW it!

(Even I can see that from here in Scotland, thousands of miles away)

Have the Mrs Hillary Clinton campaign team really resorted to such lows as doubting Senator Obama's devotion to the Christian Church, in order to 'win' some votes?

YES THEY HAVE. SHAME ON THEM , AND HER.

Mrs Hillary Clintons failure to confirm this unequivocal fact is abhorent at best.

Have they assessed (wrongly I hope), that the majority of Americans believe the Fox 'News' channel is fact?

IT WOULD APPEAR SO.

If this is how Mrs Hillary Clinton reacts, responds and decides at a time when her own political future is at stake, what DISASTROUS decisions will she make and sanction if she ever becomes occupier of The Whitehouse?

AMERICA!

I love your country.

I have visited it many times.

I love your people.

I love, appreciate and understand the constitution on which your fantastic country is based.

I embrace it in my own life and not just as some romantic notion.

I believe in freedom, real freedom.

Your country is being scared to death by sections of your media.

MRS HILLARY CLINTON IS TRYING TO SCARE YOU AND YOUR CHILDREN.

Don't succumb to that fear.

You are braver than that.

YOUR COUNTRY DESERVES MORE.

YOUR COUNTRY DESERVES THE OUSTANDING NOMINEE THAT IS SENATOR BARACK OBAMA.

YOU'RE LUCKY TO HAVE HIM.

EMBRACE HIM AS A NATION, SIT BACK AND WATCH YOUR COUNTRY FLY.

your truly

There was nothing illegal or underhanded ( just short sighted ) about Hillary's campaign staff using that stock footage.

There is also nothing illegal about Casey Knowles voicing her political opinion or doing so in a campaign commercial for Senator Obama.

LOL! I am not REALLY a Dimocrat Socialist,

But I play one on TV! ;~)

Posted by: rat-the | March 10, 2008 5:00 PM

mrabbani, i would suppose obama taking donations from a guy that is concidered to be a slum lord is also pretty unethical. a man that relies mostly on the fact that he is popular for winning a prize about himself that translated to a book on tape narrated by himself is pretty unethical also.
We elect our representatives to work for us, not write books and make millions of dollars off of the voters. It's like he has already won the presidency by defacto. you pay him to write books and put them on tape. Yayyyy you have your American Idol commercial cookie cutter candidate. Be proud.

Posted by: sa1tine | March 10, 2008 4:44 PM

The irony is interesting. I hope Casey gets to make that commercial. A little levity is always welcome in political campaigns. It humanizes the candidates. Is that a bad thing, Hillary supporters?

Posted by: RCFriedman | March 10, 2008 4:40 PM

Casey Knowles should be thankful that the Clinton campaign used her image. I assume she still is a budding actress and this controversy that she has created is self-serving and a career booster.

Posted by: kdockrey | March 10, 2008 4:38 PM

It just shows the hypocrisy of the Clinton campaign. Even the people who act in them, just do it for money.

Hillary is just an artificial human look alike. She is a completely unethical, dirty garbage.

Posted by: mrabbani | March 10, 2008 4:36 PM

I do hope Anne Kornblut and Shailagh Murray are busy looking up the actors and actresses who appear in all stock footage used in any campaign commercials to verify they support the candidate who used their image. This seems like a much more productive use of their time than what they're currently doing.

Posted by: zukermand | March 10, 2008 4:30 PM

The funny thing about this post is this is old news in the stupid and partisan places on the web. So, not only does the Post trash its credibility, it's slow to report the "news".

Posted by: zukermand | March 10, 2008 4:26 PM

I am sure she could be sued for the disclaimer. Her Parents had to have been involved in the Contract, and as such, are also able to be linked for damages.

Cover Art, is Cover Art. Casey released her image to be marketed. She has NO right to disclaim her image being used!

The Contracts have this sort of waiver, for JUST this sort of counter-productive reason!

Posted by: rat-the | March 10, 2008 4:14 PM

The existence of this post betrays a fundamental misunderstanding about how things work, or the Post's determination to "kill the pig!" Either way, it's just wrong.

Posted by: zukermand | March 10, 2008 4:07 PM

Ouch.
