New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer apologized to his family and the public monday, but did not elaborate on the reported links to a prostitution ring.

By Chris Cillizza
Gov. Elliot Spitzer (D-N.Y.) acknowledged in a very brief statement, Monday, that he had violated the obligations he had to his family and the public, though he offered no specific comments about a report that he was involved in a prostitution ring.

"I am disappointed that I failed to live up to the standard I set for myself," Spitzer said. "I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family."

Even though Spitzer did not address the idea of resigning, talk of him vacating the post ran rampant.

For more on this story, see:

  • The New York Times: "Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation. An affidavit in the federal investigation into a prostitution ring said that a wiretap recording captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a hotel room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9."

  • The unsealed legal complaint: PDF pages 34-39 describe the charges involving Client 9.

  • Local New York television station WCBSTV: "Gov. Eliot Spitzer was not expected to continue as governor and may resign by Monday evening, sources told CBS 2, after it was reported that he was linked to a prostitution ring."

Bush kills 350,000 in Iraq and gets a free pass from the American public.
    War criminals are real criminals.

Americans and the American Press is a joke.

Why do some men pay for what they can get for FREE -- especially from their wives?

SPITZER ENDORSED HILLARY AND HE WAS CORRECT FOR THAT.

THE REST OF HIS PAYFUL ACTS ARE A SEPARATE MATTER.

The REAL CRIME IN THIS AFFAIR IS WHERE THE MONEY FOR HIS ENTERTAINMENT WITH A PROSTITUTE CAME FROM. DID NY CITIZENS PAY FOR HER FLIGHT, THE HOTEL, FOOD AND ALL THE REST OF THIS LITTLE RENDEZVOUS.

aS FOR THE ACTION DON'T DOUBT FOR ONE SECOND SPITZER IS A LONE WOLF DC RUNS RAMPANT AMONG POLITICIANS. NO.9 you just aint clever enough to cover your tracks.

HOWEVER, THIS HAS NOTHING AT ALL TO DO WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. HILLARY IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR SPITZER'S MISBEHAVIOR, OR ANYONE ELSE'S CARRYING ON.

HER JOB IS TO GET THE COUNTRY BACK ON ITS FEET AS PRESIDENT AND LET THE LAW TAKE CARE OF WHAT IS A CRIME AND WHAT IS NOT A CRIME IN THE PERSONAL BEHAVIOR OF OTHERS.

    Posted by: LOONYBIN2000 | March 10, 2008 6:56 PM

i hope they crucify you spitzer. you should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. any thing less would be a huge injustice to anyone that you or your former administration ever faced in the courtroom.

What a lying hypocrite, Spitzer. This reconfirms my belief that there is no real justice in this nation, just a bunch of self-serving lying, perverse scoundrels like Spitzer that get their jollies by sending others to jail for the same conduct they engage in, and then laughing about it at their perverse little country clubs and watering holes with their like minded dirty lawyer and judge buddies. This is why folks in this country have no respect for America's claim that it is a nation of laws, not men. Well this is obviously not true, and anyone who would allow anyone in governmment in this country to lock them up is a sucker.

I am so sick of these damn "leaders" of the free world consorting with prostitutes, taking bribes, harassing pages and staff, lying. And how arrogant or debased does a pol have to be to conduct illegal activity when he KNOWS the phones and emails are tapped. At least he stepped forward and didn't let the Feds blackmail him. By God, it's time we elect women so someone will actually be working on the job.

And by the way, Hillary, I wonder if those tax returns would show any money from the super-wealthy Mr. Spitzer...I sure wonder where your competent staff have stuffed them... File 13?

I read a posting that said the Clinton website had scrubbed references to Spitzer about 1/2 hour after the scandal emerged today. I wouldn't know because I do not want to see her website. After her mean-spirited, personal, and erratic outbursts at her fellow Democrat, Obama, I can hardly stomach looking at her.
But it is most interesting, that one of her superdelegates -- in whom she has so much faith for their judgment and their ability to out-think the common masses' democratically elected pledged delegates -- has failed the judgment litmus test.
I guess she gravitates toward that type of guy...

    Can't say I'm surprised...

I think it's wrong for Spitzer to be soliciting high-priced prostitutes in Washington, especially when there are so many prostitutes in New York who are currently looking for work.

GOVERNOR SPITZER ENDORSED HILLARY CLINTON! Spitzer is not going to resign after this?!?!?! Can a sitting governor get convicted of a crime and still be governor? This is the problem with the Clinton era. Too many politicians saw how Bill Clinton got over came Jennifer Flowers and Monica Lewinski and now think that they too can get away with this type of CRAP!

    Posted by: ajtiger92 | March 10, 2008 5:08 PM

I think it would be interesting to know how he paid for his "perk" too.

I wonder if the good citizens of New York state got to pick up the tab as a travel expense?

That would be choice...haha...fraud too! Maybe expose this jerk for what he is, a low life hypocrite.

I think the press ought to look into it.

    Posted by: jbottensek | March 10, 2008 5:05 PM

So, one more time...why is prostitution illegal? Spitzer's real crime is hypocrisy. Take away the illegality, empower the sex workers and leave consenting adults to do whatever they want in the privacy of the bedroom. Don't like prostitution? Don't engage in it. The problem with policing morality is that mine and yours are never the same.

I find it repulsive that this cretin has the audacity to parade his wife out in front of the press at a time when she is probably wanting to choke the **** out of him.

Furthermore, Mr. Clean makes the comment "I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself," Gimme a break jackass... it's worse than that even. You have failed to live up to the standard that you expect OTHERS to live up to and then have prosecuted them for failing to do so.

You should be run out of town sitting backward on a mule you cheap piece of meat.
    Never did like the SOB...

Wow he made his reservation with Christin and she is 5'3" 105 lbs. Dark brown hair and petite. Wow! We are getting a lot of information. Paid 4,300.00 for her service the on Valentines day, He called the day before so she could get the flight to New York to D.C. He picked her personally. He will probably be dis-bared like Bill Clinton since he is a Lawyer. I like this story it is the juicy stuff we love. Sex and Money.

    Posted by: MsRita | March 10, 2008 4:27 PM

A question. Could this result in the overturning of verdicts in prostitution-related cases that Spitzer tried as a prosecutor. I know the facts of those cases wouldn't be affected; but, any statements he made in opening or closing arguments about how prostitution is not a victimless crime or what it does to society, etc.,--wouldn't he have been misleading the juries since he obviously didn't believe those things?

    Posted by: stburke40 | March 10, 2008 4:19 PM

I imagine that Hillary Clinton's campaign is now frantically editing their website and litature to eliminate Eliot Spitzer's May 17, 2007 endorcement.

Shades of "I didn't have sex with that woman", Eliot Spitzer has proven himself just another "experianced" politician who thinks the rest of us should do as they say and ignore what they do.
