Obama Speech Reaches Most-Viewed Status on YouTube

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), talks on the phone in the car on the tarmac at the airport in Fayetteville, N.C., Wednesday, March 19, 2008.(AP.)

By Jose Antonio Vargas
Barack Obama's Philadephia speech on race, posted on the senator's own YouTube channel, has been viewed more than 1.2 million times in less than 24 hours.

Right now it's the most viewed video in YouTube. (Users can rate videos on the site, and Obama's speech currently ranks as YouTube's top-rated video.) Meanwhile, videos of the the controversial and racially-charged sermons of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor, continue to circulate online. One of the most viewed of these videos, posted last Wednesday, was viewed more than 450,000 times by yesterday. Today, the tally had risen to 510,000 times.

More than any other remaining presidential candidate, Obama has taken full advantage of his YouTube channel to directly reach his supporters. Days before giving his speech in Philadelphia, for example, his online team posted a nearly four minute video titled "Obama Denounces Controversial Remarks."

the speech was a farce. it just confirmed obama as an american hater. his wife was never proud to be an american either. I wonder if osama is obama's speech writer

Obama's "mentor" "close friend, like family to him the hateful anti-American, anti-white" makes him unelectable.

The Dems need to get him out of the race NOW !!!!

CLINTON WON.
THE UNITER FINALLY SHOWED HIS TRUE COLORS -A DIVIDER.
if obama is the nominee it is McCain who will gain many votes.

when obama talks i switch to the food channel it is much more interesting

It was heart warming to hear a speech confirming all hopes that Sen. Obama has the plight of the African-American community at the top of his agenda. Finally, a candidate to vote for that will bring the black community to their rightful place in this country, repairing the years of ill treatment by the white establishment. It's high time there is a Presidnet willing to rectify the many sins of the past and give the African-American community their reward.

A key McCain ally in Ohio, televangelist Rod Parsley, has called for eradicating the "false religion" of Islam. Will the GOP presidential candidate renounce him?

old_europe-YOU are probably British. As such, the issues of Socialism probably are viewed as Conservative, while Capitalism is "Leftist".

Hint-Socialism does not work, and neither do the People-Why Bother?

What you are implying about bad feelings over the last few years goes BOTH ways. France(Which has taken a new stand!), Germany and Russia, all were caught with their paws in the Cookie Jar, AFTER blocking efforts to close Saddam's said Jar!

Things have moved beyond that period. Our Countries do need each other, and our combined efforts to stabilize World Events/Economies.

But, no offense, OUR Country's Political Contests really are our Business. The World Labor Party's views of a Global Government, are NOT shared by ME! WE, foot too many costs already! ;~)

It was a beautiful and effective speech and the more people who get a chance to see it, the better!

Obama took a chance and spoke honestly about his faith and his life, and unless Americans want to keep having the same pointless arguments about race and faith we need people like Obama to address the issues directly and acknowledge the problems as well as the progress we've made.

Did anyone see the lynching session on hannity and colmes last night on this speech?I cannot think of worse words for hannity and fox in general. They should close their trash tv station and setup a shop in russia spewing propganda for putin or some bloke

>>All weekend, Obama was all over the airwaves claiming he had never heard his "pastor" Wright saying anything offensive in church. Yesterday, he admitted that he had.

Nope. Obama never claimed that he hadn't heard the pastor say anything "controversial"; he merely said that he hadn't been in church when Rev. Wright uttered the vitriolic sermon snippets that are being bandied about on YouTube.

In any case, Obama is running for president of the United States, not for the Trinity Church board of deacons. He's made his statement (and an eloquent one, at that), and now he--and we--should move on to topics that really matter, such as the multi-trillion-dollar war in Iraq, a shrinking economy, and a seriously inadequate health-care system.

Actually in Europe, Obama is considered more as a centrist, Hillary is seen as leftist, if you ask the European right wingers. I don't believe in that really. I'd like to have a close unbiased look and if I like what I see, I say so. I couldn't have cared less about Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, but with the burden the likes of you have saddled us with during the last eight years...

Posted by: old_europe | March 19, 2008 2:08 PM

"Because he had no accomplishments of his own, he extolled Irish ones." That's from a funny novel I read once. It sums up what "patriotism" really means. It seems that conservatives are so mediocre in handling everything from foreigns relations to the economy, that all they can do to maintain a sense of self-worth is promote their patriotism and question the patriotism of anyone they don't like.

For those still dissatisfied that Obama should have quit his church long ago and never had a close relation with his inflammatory pastor, I have a question: what other church should Obama have joined in the Chicago area? For the sake of his wife and daughters as well as part of his calling as a community organizer, it was important to be part of a black community, and United Trinity offers a fantastic community. If they had joined a different black church, how likely is it that similar views to those of Reverend Wright would not also be expressed there? These views exist in black American culture, and they would be hard to avoid in any black church. Obama did chide the black community for being complicit in some of their own grievances. But consider why we are offended: Is it Wright's preaching style? Well, this is the style in a lot of black churches. Is it that he said things that are unpatriotic? What is "patriotic"? Consider: perhaps we should stop questioning the patriotism of other Americans who criticize American policies. We wound up in a war in Iraq, because everyone felt they had to march to a patriotic drumbeat and were afraid to speak to otherwise. The issue is not racism but what is patriotism, and we should ask, Why is that the rod by which we measure the worthiness and loyalties of other Americans?

What is wonderful about Obama is that he has a gift for understanding where everyone is coming from, black or white, calming them by validating their grievances and also showing them the other side, thus forging mutual sympathies across old divides. He questions no one's sympathies, but understands we all come from different backgrounds yet want to move in the same direction.

I grew up in a small town in Arkansas, where at some of those all-white churches hatred for the Jews was preached and taught in their brochures. These were the so-called town fathers that attended this church. So, YES, there is a double-standard.

It's OK if you go to a white church where a nut-job minister, preacher, or pastor makes inflammatory statements about AIDS, 9-11, Jews, blacks or Hurricane Katrina - you get a pass, as has been the case with Falwell and so many other televangelists. But, if you're black and your minister makes some outrageous statements - you are GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION?? It's a huge double standard.

We left our church and denomination in 2003, because we disagreed with what was being preached from the podium. Things like how the United Nations represents the Anti-Christ and is part of Babylon the Great. We just got tired of it. But, it was not easy to do, because YOUR CHURCH is part of YOUR LIFE. It's a community, where your friends and relatives go, too. To leave your church can be very, very painful emotionally.

Yes, Obama should have done this. But, we don't ask the white candidates to disavow their churches do we? No, they get a pass.

Posted by: jprager | March 19, 2008 1:45 PM

Obama made a good point but he's wasting is time.

When I see the amount of insanely ignorant comments on this blog, it becomes clear that we'll vote a hyper and trigger-happy GWB version 2.0. Most of the comments I've just read said exactly the contrary of what OB's said during his speech. I love to see those pathetic cretins who try to portray themselves as conservatives while they don't even have two nickels to rub or the proper education to succeed.

They've been pounding (including the HillBilly)on his inability to have some substance beside his speeches but nobody (pundits, bloggers, experts, presidential candidates) can actually dissect his policies, whether is social or economic, to say that he makes no sense. So networks such as ABC or Fauxnews will insist on his middle name or his religion, now rev. Wright. That's how low the media (not so liberal after all) have dragged us.

The cycle of being the only superpower will come to an end very sooner than we thought with the number imbecile I've seen so far, from so called journalists to bloggers. It is scary, really scary.

Jose Antonio Vargas:

Anyone can check out Youtube. Your job should be to look into the things that others aren't and to ask the candidates real questions. Needless to say, you aren't doing your job (assuming your job is to be a journalist and not just a promoting hack).

You also seem to have left a few things out of this post:

1. The videos from Obama, Clinton, and the few from McCain are strictly moderated both in regards to comments and video replies. A quick glance at the replies to the linked video shows that almost every single comment is favorable. Wouldn't that strike a real journalist as a bit odd?

2. The Obama Girl video only had about 700 views when ABC "News" started promoting it, which was followed by other "news" sites doing the same. Rather than discussing the things that matter, ABC and the rest of the MSM promote time wasters in order to cover up their incompetence. Shouldn't a real journalist concentrate on important issues?

3. As a test, I added a video reply ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=EiullH5jU1A ) and the following comment, and both received messages indicating they had to be approved first. I'm guessing that neither will appear.

Here's the comment:

Back on May 1, 2006, Barack Obama attended the illegal immigration march in Chicago, an event that was organized by a few people linked to the Mexican government and even an official with a Mexican political party.

Rather than investigating whether a foreign government used proxies to agitate their citizens to take to our streets, Obama helped that government with their goals.

I Watched to the whole speech and was very disappointed! He started out with what could have and should have been a landmark speech on race relations and racism in America. What we got and it quickly turned into was yet once again a dodging sidestep answer about the people he chooses to keep including in his campaign and in his life. Yet this press release didn't even stop there! This speech/press release then turns into nothing more then a stump speech of the same old rhetoric he has used on the road already. Finally in the closing we see the whole reason for his "speech" which turns out to be nothing more then a set up for a campaign ad. What more can you call it when he said we all have a choice on which path to take and unless you chose to vote for me it will be the wrong path, wrong choice and wrong vote. I find this shameful that he tired to hook all this in under the notion that this was a speech on race relations. Who has brought race into this election? Who IS bringing race into this election? NOBAMA! That's who!

Posted by: snags85 | March 19, 2008 1:39 PM

Do white people really buy that Obama never knew that his pastor was a racist? I don't think it takes a genius to figure out why Obama would stay in a church like that for 20 years. He either is a) a racist himself b)a wannabe politician who wanted the 8000 votes that the church could deliever him when he was running for the state senate. c) a dumbass with horrible judgment and questionable ethics who wanted to seem like a good guy who went to church on Sundays. You decide. I know I have and Mr. Obama will not get this white mans vote. Giving a speech saying that you aren't a racist doesn't excuse you for your actions. Oh and he should drop out. Obama will never win the General Election.

Soros must be PROUD! ;~)

Posted by: rat-the | March 19, 2008 1:33 PM

Ah, the Hillary sock puppets are up and out early I see, tenaciously gnawing on the line that Obama said he's heard some controversial remarks from Rev. Wright first-hand. Way to take that word and immediately think he meant as controversial as the crap Rev. Wright spewed in that 10-minute chunk of a 90-minute sermon, one of perhaps tens of thousands of sermons he gave during his 35-year career. Look, there's no pleasing you sock puppets. We know that. But quit trying to spout that you somehow hit on a "gotcha" moment when you're so off-target you're hitting yourself in your own arse. Obama will be the next president. Start your own radio network, or anti-Obama newspaper, or whatever will get you through the next eight years. Oh, and have a nice day.

Posted by: markiebee001 | March 19, 2008 1:30 PM

All over Europe people are impressed with Obama's speech. All the Americans I know are impressed. rat-the, svreader, et.al. it looks like your knickers are all in a bunch about this. Don't fret, if you get Obama for President, it will be good for you, too.

Here's Englands take:

Posted by: old_europe | March 19, 2008 1:29 PM

The comparison between Mr. Obama's pastor and his maternal grandmother is totally wrong and pathetic. One can not choose his or her parents and grandparents, but one surely choose one's religion beliefs, which church you attend, and who you want to be your pastor. He and his wife are Harvard graduates and were willingly went to that church.

Posted by: fsw | March 19, 2008 1:29 PM

I saw the speech and it did nothing but tell me he is a slick politician that is benefiting from his race just like Geraldine Ferraro said. If this was a white politician going to this church, it would have been over for them that day. The double standard for the black candidate is the real dividing part of this whole issue. Blacks think we should just understand and go on about our day. Whites feel like this isn't fair that Obama calls for Imus to be fired and then when he gets caught doing something stupid, he should be able to give a speech that he read from a teleprompter and all is forgiven? I don't think I or many Americans are that stupid. If you are one of those people I ask you to please, put down the Kool Aid and back slowly away from Mr. Obama.

Posted by: hwebb5454 | March 19, 2008 1:26 PM

what may i ask was obama lieing about, what was he dishonest about??? He spoke the truth - many of us still see race as an issue - many of us try and make it not be an issue - but many of us have reached the level like my son's generation has - where race is not even a noticed difference anyone - guilt by association is a slippery slope (McCarthy again??), you may not accept his liberal agenda BUT he spoke the honest truth about the issue and himself.

Posted by: fixbone | March 19, 2008 1:17 PM

Obama is a statesman of the twenty-first century. Hillary is a shrill pol. They are as different as a Lexus 460iL and a hooptie.

I wait for Hillary to make such a monumental speech (note that I am not holding my breath).

BOBBOB- Reality Check.

Me, and EVERYBODY I associate with, DO NOT, go to Churches that Promote US, worry about US, Help US, and try to get Actions to advance US.

WE, tend to be all colors, and we realize we already live in a Country that is actually spelled "US".

But, Barack and his Black Community, want God to Damn "US" ! :-(

Posted by: rat-the | March 19, 2008 1:01 PM

All the fence-sitters I've heard from came away from his speech saying that it was amazing to hear someone speak so honestly and masterfully about the issue. How they've never heard anyone else tell it so clearly like it is.

I can't wait to hear the 'pop, pop, pop' of all the right wing, racist head's popping all over the country when Obama is sworn in as the President of the United States of America.

Posted by: thebobbob | March 19, 2008 12:56 PM

Obama's speech was so remarkable that I no longer care whether he wins the nomination or not. He won. Period. This country may not be ready but the fault is not his, it's ours.

Posted by: dalzine | March 19, 2008 12:55 PM

Golly, a Black Man out to promote Black People.

There should be two new Campaign songs.

President McCain-"Taking Care of Business"

And the Dimocrats-Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past"! ;~)

Posted by: rat-the | March 19, 2008 12:52 PM

It's a good thing that Obama will be seen by many giving his "big" speech where he exposes himself as a fraud and liar.

Case in point. All weekend, Obama was all over the airwaves claiming he had never heard his "pastor" Wright saying anything offensive in church. Yesterday, he admitted that he had.

What kind of character and judgment does Obama have to defiantly refuse to completely disassociate himself with an avowed racist, anti-white, anti-semitic, anti-American, pro-Louis Farakaan black supremecy Nation of Islam supporter who believes that the U.S. Govt created the AIDS virus to kill blacks?

THIS is the man Obama calls his "mentor" "close friend, like family to him"??? WHY? THIS is the man Obama subjects his two young children to the hateful anti-American, anti-white diatribes in "church"??? (Obama and his children are part white).

This does not speak well of Obama. He is unelectable.

The Dems need to get him out of the race before he completely destroys any chance for a Dem victory in November.

GAME OVER. Hillary won.

New poll numbers back that up!
