Clinton Lagging in TV Ad Spending

By Matthew Mosk
The American Federation of Teachers reported today it has bought more than $329,000 in radio ads to support Democrat Hillary Clinton's presidential bid, and may have a television ad coming soon to complement the radio buy.

Based on the activity on television stations last week, Clinton will need the union help.

Democrat Barack Obama outspent Clinton 5 to 1 on the Pennsylvania airwaves, spending roughly $2 million to Clinton's $400,000, according to Evan Tracey of the Campaign Media Analysis Group.

Obama was on the air several days ahead of Clinton and has been running more ads than his rival on a daily basis. Obama also put television ads in circulation in North Carolina and Indiana late last week, and Clinton has yet to answer in either state, Tracey said.

The advertising disparity has helped fuel questions about the financial health of the Clinton campaign. Politico reported this morning that the Clinton campaign has left a trail of unpaid debts at caterers and other small vendors, and noted that the campaign carried over unpaid bills related to health insurance premiums for her campaign staff . The campaign carried more than $8 million in debt into March, according to FEC reports.

Clinton campaign officials have said they pay their bills on a timely basis. Speaking on MSNBC today, campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson batted down the debt chatter, but that didn't stop him from plugging the campaign's website. One campaign supporter familiar with March fundraising efforts said that while the campaign will not show numbers as high as in February's $35 million haul, the campaign will still have one of its best months since Clinton first announced more than a year ago.

Tonight is the deadline for contributions that will be recorded in the March reports to the Federal Election Commission. Both Clinton and Obama have tried to prime their Internet donors to give before midnight. Clinton has sent out a series of e-mails to supporters urging them to contribute before the end of the month.

"Together we are going to keep fighting and winning. But first we need to show that we have the resources to compete vigorously in the upcoming races, and I'm depending on you for that support," her latest e-mail says. Clinton's website has added an electronic counter showing her campaign closing in on a $3 million goal, though its unclear what time period that goal has covered. Obama's website is advertising its latest "Dinner with Obama" contest.

Lacking in spending won't bother Hillary. She will go into the cooler and pound a few sides of beef and win in the underdog role.

NEO-CONS FOR HILLARY ! ! !

keep repeating the anti-Obama slurs, over and over
a. He's Black
b. He's Muslim
c. He's a racist

Never talk about "issues", always about his father, his pastor, his wife, his kindergarden papers.....always put his middle name in capital letters, make racial remarks about Jim ones....whatever, it doesn't really matter (Americans are stupid)(look how we got them in to Iraq!)

Remember: both Hillary and McCain are fine with us; they're both in our lobby's pocket; both McCain and Clinton will get America into the WARS that we want.

but

WE'VE GOT TO STOP OBAMA !

YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

If you only count the primaries where Hillary won, you can see quite easily that Hillary is going to win the nomination! All you need is a kindergarten education to realize this logic. State that she lost do not count. If Hillary supporters can understand this, why can't you?

Excerpts from
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/9259

A pair of Ohio companies owed more than $25,000 by Clinton for staging events for her campaign are warning others in the tight-knit event production community -- and anyone else who will listen -- to get their cash upfront when doing business with her. Her campaign, say representatives of the two companies, has stopped returning phone calls and e-mails seeking payment of outstanding invoices. One even got no response from a certified letter.
...
She owed Iowa's Sioux City Art Center Board of Trustees $3,500 for catering and venue costs, New Hampshire's Winnacunnet Cooperative School District $4,400 in event costs, Qwest $24,000 for phone service, various branches of the Iowa-based supermarket chain Hy-Vee $15,000 for food, beverages and catering, and $7,700 to Ohio and Massachusetts branches of the theatrical stage employees' union, for equipment costs.
....
And word is getting around that Clinton's campaign does not promptly pay those who labor to make her events look good, said an employee of the event production company Forty Two of Youngstown, Ohio.
...
"We worked very hard to put together these events on a moment's notice and do absolutely everything to a 't' to make it look perfect on television for her and for her campaign," said the employee. "Sen. Clinton talks about helping working families, people in unions and small businesses. But when it comes down to actually doing something that shows that she can back up her words with action, she fails."
....
Show Tyme Exhibits, another Youngstown event production company, has produced political events for years and had never had problems getting paid before Clinton, according to owner Jim Phillips.
...
"It was only $607, but I'm a small guy; I could use that," said Phillips, adding, "Everyone I can tell, I do tell about it. You tell somebody something bad about somebody, they tell 10 other people."
...
Both Phillips and the Forty Two employee said they voted for Clinton in Ohio's March 4 primary, which she won handily, but regret their votes and are reluctant to work for her campaign again.

Yep ... solutions for America -- don't pay your bils, float yourself a loan and climb on the backs of small business people behind the 8 ball economically to finance your upcoming campaign stops. Say anything... do anything. Hey, these guys are just collateral damage.

Does it REALLY make sense for Democrats to spend $200 million fighting each other for the next 3 months? CLINTON CANNOT WIN in the Delegate count, the ONLY vote that matters.

Any argument about monopolizing media coverage is totally blown away by this FACT.

This decision to continue is SELF DESCTRUCTIVE and so are her supporters if they think she has a chance to win OR that this is helping the Democratic Party!

SMART Democrats would spend the $200 million fighting McCain.

The Washington Post Editorial Board doesn't seem bright enough to recognize this simple reality.

Basically, between the Trolls and the overly-enthusiastic psycho-partisans, the WP comments on election coverage have been worthless for months now. Don't look here for a reasonable discussion or insight. It's a pool full of pee, you just don't want to swim there. I just poke in here once in a while to warn the uninitiated about the Trolls.

Posted by: nodebris | April 1, 2008 12:43 AM

JakeD is a troll you can safely ignore. He has posted several hundred times on every WP story on Obama; he's almost always the first to post; he and svreader post the most on any article; he always cites Obama's middle name. He's not just a casual commenter, clearly.

Basically, he's paid to do this loathsome nasty stuff, and probably feels pretty good about it too. At least, if he's getting paid per post or per hour, rather than by impact.

Of course, he might not be paid, in which case he's probably just off his meds. If that's the case, someday one of his posts will break off in mid-sentence when his parole officer finally catches up with him, and we'll thankfully be spared any more of his enlightening and elevating commentary.

In the meantime, no rubber-necking. Just drive right on by, nothing to see there.

"Yeah, sniper fire, that's what she said."

That's what my fellow Democrats are saying. What I'm saying is, "Say 'Goodnight,' Hillary."

Christopher Hitchens asks and answers the following:

In particular, what had happened to the 1992 promise, four years earlier, that genocide in Bosnia would be opposed by a Clinton administration?

In the event, President Bill Clinton had not found it convenient to keep this promise. Let me quote from Sally Bedell Smith's admirable book on the happy couple, For Love of Politics:

Taking the advice of Al Gore and National Security Advisor Tony Lake, Bill agreed to a proposal to bomb Serbian military positions while helping the Muslims acquire weapons to defend themselves--the fulfillment of a pledge he had made during the 1992 campaign. But instead of pushing European leaders, he directed Secretary of State Warren Christopher merely to consult with them. When they balked at the plan, Bill quickly retreated, creating a "perception of drift." The key factor in Bill's policy reversal was Hillary, who was said to have "deep misgivings" and viewed the situation as "a Vietnam that would compromise health-care reform." The United States took no further action in Bosnia, and the "ethnic cleansing" by the Serbs was to continue for four more years, resulting in the deaths of more than 250,000 people.

she ought to be so close in popular vote totals

"Hello, is this Ms. Clinton?
"Which Ms. Clinton do you mean"
"Hillary Clinton."
"Who's calling"
"This the ABC Event Management Co.
"Oh,(The voice changes a little, the pitch is a little higher.) Oh, I'm Chelsea Clinton; my mother is not in yet. Would you like to leave a message?"
"Yeah. Tell her I need my money; when is she going to pay my bill. I sent it out three times."
"She probable didn't get your letter. I'll be glad to tell her you called. But she's not in now; She's in Bosnia dodging sniper bullets and bringing peace to the region. You care to leave a message?
"Darn right, you tell that biotch if I don't get my money within 24 hours there will be a sniper out to blow her arse away."

The phone is slammed down and Hillary stumbles off to bed just as Bill sneaks in, holding his shoes in his hands.

The key point here is that Senator Clinton's campaign has more than enough money to pay her bills, but her campaign is paying their vendors really, really slowly. They were paying slowly even when they had more money.

Her campaign's bill-paying reflects the candidate: doing the right thing only when the media points it out, not doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

Obama is completing (and winning) against one the most established and best political machines in recent history. Yes, that is the Clinton Political Machine. Built for and by Bill Clinton from his days as Attorney General and Governor of Arkansas to his days as President of the US.

Hillary has most of the mainstream popular Pennslyvania Democrats in her corner as well as the Bill Clinton brand behind her. It would take a miracle for Obama to win Pennslyvania. But he loses by less than 10pts, I would call that a victory, especially if it is a record voter turnout.

svreader, your girl talks the talk about universal healthcare and yet her campaign has failed to pay for healthcare insurance for her employees. Hillary's campaign has stiffed many a vendor and ducks emails and phone calls from people she owes (source: politico.com). How does this fit with your image of Hillary Clinton the noble woman? Hispana, thinker and iowatreasures, I ask y'all all the same.

If Obama stiffed anyone like Hillary has, you'd be screaming it from the rooftops and burning up the blogosphere with the news. Your silence on this matter (since it's Hillary) is quite deafening. Hillary Clinton is not presidential timber in any way, shape or form.

Posted by: meldupree | March 31, 2008 10:24 PM

According to Vogel on politico.com, Hillary's campaign stiffed a bunch of people on bills and failed to pay their employees' health insurance benefits. Her campaign is $8.7M in the red as of the end of Feb. Obama has a huge war-chest with $625K in the red and seems to pay his vendors on time and in full. Obama's executive, managerial and administrative skills shine far and above Hillary's like day and night. Hillary can't run her own campaign; how is she going to run a government and a nation?

Posted by: meldupree | March 31, 2008 10:15 PM

.......of course he's for McCain.....he's part of the (organized) neo-con smear-campaign against Obama. (certainly, you must have figured that out!)

It's not about anything they claim it's about... it's about WAR! i.e. Iraq, and Iran, and Syria... THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT... AND THEY'RE AFRAID OF OBAMA (but not Hillary, or McCain).

JakeD you must be for McCain. If we follow your logic to its conclusion McCain is spending less than Hillary or Obama and still ahead in your polls.

The most disturbing element of this report is "the Clinton campaign has left a trail of unpaid debts at caterers and other small vendors."

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. It is unacceptable for a presidential candidate to stick America's small businesses with unpaid debt.

If Sen. Clinton cannot manage her owe resources, how can she be trusted to manage the nation's resources?

Obama is bringing millions of fired up young voters to the process, while Hillary takes charity from Rush Limbaugh.

Obama is able to out-spend Hillary because of the enthusiasm of his supporters. Unlike Hillary, Obama has gotten more than a million people to donate to his campaign...usually at about $25 a person.

People like Obama.

That's why I've (for the first time in my life) have donated repeatedly to his campaign.

why?

Because I love America... and this country needs a change!!!

ehandrick:

All the polling data is cited at those links (even with the States too close to call at this time, McCain beats BOTH Clinton and Obama). After you look at the numbers, let me know if you still have any questions.

Obama will handily defeat McCain. The Republicans barely seized power with a perfect alignment evangelicals, clinton haters and with help from some Republican Sec.'s of State.

The Republican Party is in complete disarray. The evangelicals are ashamed of their support for Bush and unChristian behavior of so many "moral" Republican Legislators. The moderates are appalled at the economic disaster and complete incompetence of Bush and his Republican party backers at running the government. And, don't forget the unnecessary war that Bush and the Republican Party stuffed down the throats of the American people. No threat, No Plan, just corruption, death and bankruptcy. That's a helluva platform. Maybe if they keep muttering "no taxes, no abortion, no gays" over and over....

Jake, I don't know about your numbers. U.S. World and News Report had these numbers for Obama. (Clinton would lose they say).
"The Obama-McCain race, as many political experts have said, would very likely offer something completely different. According to Putnam's analysis, Obama's cross-party appeal would seem to give him a leg up on McCain in some "red" states like Texas, Iowa, South Carolina, and Maryland. But he might not be as competitive as Clinton in states like Florida. Based on current polls, Obama would have a 199-174 lead over McCain in states they both dominated, while there would be 165 electoral votes available in states that would be, at this point, too close to call.

In this scenario, if electoral votes are awarded to the candidate currently leading in those "too close to call" states, Putnam says, Clinton would lose to McCain 314-224, while Obama would beat him, 273-265."

If Barack HUSSEIN Obama outspends Hillary DIANE Clinton 5-to-1 and still can't win Pennsylvania, how is he going to win against John SIDNEY McCain?

If anyone is actually interested in how the Electoral College (the only vote that counts) is lining up so far:

McCain (324) vs. Obama (205)
