Clinton Told True Tale of Woe, Says Kin

By Anne E. Kornblut
The aunt of a young pregnant woman who died after a hospital told her she needed to pay $100 up front for care said in an interview on Monday that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has been telling the story accurately on the campaign trail -- following claims by a different Ohio hospital that it did not turn the patient away.

For weeks, Clinton repeated an anecdote she heard in Ohio on Feb. 28 involving a young woman who lost her baby and later died because she lacked health insurance and did not have $100 to gain access to a nearby hospital.

But over the weekend, Clinton came under fire when officials at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, after reading about her remarks, demanded that she stop recounting it because the patient, Trina Bechtel, was admitted there and did have insurance.

That part, it turns out, is true. But so is Clinton's claim that Bechtel did not get care at another hospital that wanted a $100 pre-payment before seeing her, according to the young woman's aunt, Lisa Casto. "It's a true story," said Casto, 53.

Casto added some details that were not part -- or differed from -- the Clinton anecdote: She said her niece had previously been in debt to a local hospital that later sent her a letter informing her that she could only be treated there in the future if she gave them a $100 deposit. At the time she went into debt to that hospital, Casto said, Bechtel was uninsured, though she later obtained health insurance and was insured at the time of her death.

Casto said she did not want to give the name of the offending hospital because the flood of calls over the incident has overwhelmed her and Meigs County deputy sheriff Bryan Holman, a friend of hers who retold the story to Clinton when she campaigned in southern Ohio.

But court records show that Bechtel had a civil judgment against her by the Holzer Hospital Foundation for the amount of $4,426, entered in 2002, which was repaid in 2005. A call to an official at Holzer Medical Center, which is run by the foundation, in Ohio was not immediately returned.

Casto said her niece, who suffered from preeclampsia during her pregnancy, did not seek care at the first hospital when she fell ill because she knew she did not have the $100 out-of-pocket she believed she would need to be seen. Instead, she went to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, where her baby was stillborn. Bechtel was later flown to Columbus and died there. She was 35.

Casto said she has been stunned by the amount of negative attention her niece's story generated, and that she was sorry it had hurt the Clinton campaign. She was, and is, she said, a supporter. "Did I vote for Hillary?" she said. "You'd better bet I did."

One of the most undesirable things that can happen in life is lack of cash, especially if you are in urgent need of buying something. I experienced this some time ago and due to my bad credit I went into terrible debt. At the moment I'm on my way to finally rebuilding credit, as I followed recommendations at

Hospital care will become people-responsive if HIllary is elected. The other two would mean just drifting along, since what happens to people is more of what Hillary Clinton is made of. Some poor young woman feints at every Obama rally, that's about as close as either of them get to the empathy Hillary holds. Win the peace, freedom, and prosperity of the next eight years for America! Vote for HIllary Clinton 2008!

Well I know for a FACT that Holzer Clinic in Pomeroy will turn away people if they do not come up with the $100. My cousin who is now on Medicare insurance but was not on it a couple years ago after he had his stroke can not go to Urgent Care at the Holzer Clinic without paying the $100.00. Then the $100.00 doesn't even go towards that visit at all it goes to another account for the past amount due. They receive another Bill from them later for that visit. He only has a bill to begin with because when he had his stroke and was in the hospital for such a long time He had a large bill. The Hospital bills were taken care of through a grant that pays for bills, BUT all the Doctors that saw him during his stay in the Hospital is not billed through the hospital it is billed through the Clinic and was NOT PAID. This is why he has a bill at the clinic and this is why they want $100.00 for treatment. When he had the stroke he was unable to talk or walk and lost the use of his right arm/hand. He is able to walk now but his speech is very limited and his right arm/hand is still not working correctly. Since the stroke he has seizures and they were frequent for over a year afterwards and still has them periodically now. When he had those seizures he would sometimes fall (if he was standing) and hurt himself (bleeding from the head) and needed medical attention. But Urgent Care would not take him unless he paid the $100.00 and he was turned away before from Holzer's because they didn't have $100.00 on them. Even Now that he has Medicare they still do the same thing. The other thing is that my cousin and Aunt didn't even know they had an outstanding bill with them because they were told that the Hospital bills were paid and they never received a bill from the clinic informing them of anything different. They didn't realize that the Doctors at the hospital were not billed through the hospital. That is just wrong what they did to him and are doing.

The politician who are out of touch are the once who get tens of millions of dollars from big time lobbyist and foreign interests. Obama has made it a hard ways just like millions of Americans. The family with no income, borrowing money to go to school, he unlike the Clintons have student loans and mortgages not a 109 millions of income, if any one understand the challenges of middle and lower income Americans it is Barack Obama. That is why millions of people believe in change and that together "yes we can". In fact, about bitterness shows his in touch with the common man problems.

Sadly Hillary simply repeats what she is told to repeat without the good judgement to question it. This is a problem when you hire your cronies as Bush did.

Jim said, " . . . she intended to point out some flaws in our healthcare system...and then to point out possible solutions...to assure that this kind of thing never happens again. . ."

OK Jim, what part of this story points out a flaw in our healthcare system? I'd say that the saddest part of this story is that both the woman and her baby died. What programatic suggestions does Ms. Clinton have for preventing death?

Posted by: | April 12, 2008 3:15 PM

Under Hillary's plan, if someone comes into a hospital uninsured, the hospital staff enroll them in Medicare or something similar.

No, no one would get fined or prosecuted under Hillary's plan. You might be thinking of Romney's.

from the same story:

"Despite allegations by some critics, Clinton did not invent the dramatic facts but instead passed on to her audiences a reasonably accurate version of the story told to her Feb. 28 by a Meigs County deputy sheriff."

and,

"But Susie Casto, Bachtel's aunt, told the Pomeroy Daily Sentinel that she had suggested to Holman that he tell Clinton
the story to "let people know that there is a need for more health-care services in this area."

But in retelling the story, Holman and Casto got several key details wrong. For instance, Holman told Clinton that Bachtel had no insurance."

there`s several different news accounts now.

Regardless, it`s obvious that Hillary intended to tell a true story...and that her intent was never to lie or mislead in any way...while retelling the story exactly the way it was told to her.

but, perhaps even more importantly, she intended to point out some flaws in our healthcare system...and then to point out possible solutions...to assure that this kind of thing never happens again...so, Please excuse Mrs. Clinton for caring...because this stuff happens all the time under the current healthcare system...

somehow, this most important part of the story got lost...and that`s the real shame of this story.

The emergence of Trina Bachtel into the 2008 presidential campaign was the result of inaccurate information passed on to Clinton, her campaign's failure to vet the account and the neglect of news organizations to promptly check out the story.

AS IT TURNS OUT, ALMOST NONE OF WHAT CLINTON SAID WAS ACCURATE. Bachtel was insured through her job managing a pizza restaurant, she was under the regular care of an obstetrics facility in Athens, and she had been part of the O'Bleness Health System in Ohio.

As far as I can tell it was the hospital that named itself and the patient in question...Not Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton did not violate the privacy law. The official entity releasing the name of the woman did. The deputy Sheriff verified the facts of the story he related to the Senator

The woman was afraid to go to one hospital because they had previously told her that they would not treat her unless she had 100 dollars... ..is that the same as denying treatment in advance? As health care provider I know that once one shows up care has to be provided, but it is more convenient to discourage people from coming in the first place.

I cannot beleive that people are happier with the perception that "Clinton lied" than the fact we have a maternal and infant mortality rate equal to third world countries. Some people are sick and twisted zealots about their Obama Movement

Posted by: LindaC | April 11, 2008 6:04 PM

Obama tells more lies and no one seems to make a big deal out of it. Hillary told the truth and now they are trying to make her look bad. I fear for this country if Obama gets to be president. He doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground.

I support NYS Senator Hillary Clinton. She is a compassionate and a practical policymaker. It is about time that the Media covers real stories. Yes, the American Health System is broken. Million of Americans are without health insurance. Individuals and families are suffering. We need a real mandate for Universal Health Care. I am very fortunate. I have a health insurance. However, the bureaucracy in hospitals is very brutal. The bureaucracy of health insurance companies is worse. For those without a job, you could apply to COBRA. Yes, COBRA works as long as you are able to pay over $435 per month per family member. Lets get real. Vote for Senator Hillary Clinton.

Dead pregnant woman's sister comes forth and tells the truth along with doctors

The Columbus Dispatch

WASHINGTON -- The story of Trina Bachtel's life had a tragic ending -- twice.

In August, the 35-year-old woman from Middleport in southeastern Ohio died at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus after complications during a pregnancy in which son Trey was stillborn.

Six-and-a-half months after Bachtel was buried by her family, the story of her death became a major feature in the speeches of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. First in Ohio and then in other states, Clinton told aghast audiences of the woman who had lost her first child, and then her own life, because she lacked health insurance and could not get proper care.

"We had just started to calm down, and now they're making me relive everything all over again," said her sister, Kandi Tracy of Racine, Ohio.

Despite allegations by some critics, Clinton did not invent the dramatic facts but instead passed on to her audiences a reasonably accurate version of the story told to her Feb. 28 by a Meigs County deputy sheriff. But a Clinton spokesman acknowledged this month that the campaign did not "fully vet" the story and that Clinton would no longer repeat it.

In addition, news organizations -- including The Dispatch -- did not promptly examine the facts of the story to determine whether it was accurate. Not until Saturday -- more than a month after the Ohio primary -- did T he New York Times report that the woman was insured and had been under the care of an obstetrics practice.

"While it is a fundamental responsibility on the part of a campaign to vet a story to make certain it is accurate, it also is the media's responsibility to verify and check out stories," said Mark Jurkowitz, a former media writer at T he Boston Globe and now associate director of the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

"As far as journalism's role, it's clear: We're not stenographers."

Candidates from both political parties often employ stories they have been told to illustrate a larger point.

For example, Ronald Reagan as a presidential candidate decades ago regaled audiences with the story of the "Chicago Welfare Queen" who he claimed relied on 80 addresses and 12 Social Security cards to collect $150,000.

A 2003 article in Washington Monthly magazine showed that the woman in question had been convicted of using two aliases to collect about $8,000.

Bachtel was manager for about six years of the Gallipolis Pizza Hut, where her benefits included health insurance, said Stanley Jarvis, a regional manager for the restaurant chain and a friend of Bachtel's.

In 2005, she joined the O'Bleness Health System in Athens, according to Linda Weiss, a spokeswoman for O'Bleness.

During her pregnancy in 2007, Bachtel was under the care of River Rose Obstetrics and Gynecology, which is part of the O'Bleness system and across the parking lot from O'Bleness' hospital in Athens.

According to Jane Broecker, an obstetrician at River Rose, Bachtel made 14 visits between Feb. 8 and July 31. "She came regularly for appointments," Broecker said.

In addition, records made available by O'Bleness show that Bachtel visited the hospital seven times in 2007 on an outpatient basis. Six of those visits took place on the same day she had been at River Rose.

On Aug. 1, Bachtel was admitted to O'Bleness, where her baby boy was stillborn. Two days later, she was transferred to Riverside Hospital in Columbus and finally to Ohio State University Medical Center, where she died Aug. 15.

Bachtel died of adult respiratory distress, with pneumonia and liver failure contributing to her death, her death certificate says.

Broecker said that even if Bachtel had not been insured, she would have been treated at O'Bleness. "The hospital is a charity provider," Broecker said. "We don't turn pregnant patients away."

Bryan Holman, the 40-year-old deputy sheriff who told Clinton about Bachtel when he hosted the presidential candidate in his mobile home, could not be reached for comment.

But Susie Casto, Bachtel's aunt, told the Pomeroy Daily Sentinel that she had suggested to Holman that he tell Clinton the story to "let people know that there is a need for more health-care services in this area."

But in retelling the story, Holman and Casto got several key details wrong. For instance, Holman told Clinton that Bachtel had no insurance.

Tracy said the stories of her sister not having insurance were "a big misunderstanding. She always had health insurance."

Actually iirc what would happen under Clinton's plan if someone came in without insurance, is the hospital office people would ENROLL them in Medicare right then (or whatever plan would be best for them).

Actually Steele what would happen under Clinton's plan if someone came in without insurance, they would be fined for not participating in the plan and could possibly face jail time for not paying federal Health Care insurance much like the jail time faced for not paying federal taxes...I mean actually, that's what would happen...no really...

Posted by: The Common Sense Approach | April 10, 2008 12:06 PM

So let me make sure I understand this, the pregnant young woman didn't go to the "un-named" hospital (therefore verifiable account given by an Aunt whom "you bet" she voted for Clinton, because she "thought" they would turn her down because she didn't have $100--and this makes Clinton's take on the story true...how?????

Posted by: The Common Sense Approach | April 10, 2008 11:59 AM

OK, we've heard from the poor dead woman's family and the story IS true, now can someone please call off the dogs? My goodness, the desperation to destroy and misinterpret everything that Sen. Hillary Clinton says is simply pathetic.

Comments by JakeD, below, are a good example of exactly what is wrong with this election process. That these attacks are still going on amounts to saying: "So sorry a young girl is needlessly dead, but what can I make of this for political purposes by continually misinterpreting the truth and picking apart the details..."

The idea that Sen. Clinton is to blame or lacks judgment for not knowing the additional facts is absurd. Especially when compared to Obama's monumentally blatant lack of judgment or lack of vetting of say, oh I don't know, Tony Rezko, or how about Rev. Jeremiah Wright?

Posted by: Lou | April 10, 2008 11:21 AM

Although the story of the young woman and her unborn child who died because of lack of medical care (for whatever reason) is sad, what is most sad are the comments of the Obama supporters.

We know that Senator Obama is not a great person because he attracts absolute nut jobs. I have never seen such hatefilled comments from any source. You people have got to get a life away from Obama ...you are consumed with hatred of everything. Apparently people like Jeremiah Wright have been successful in spreading hate. Race relations in this country have been set back at least 50 years. I have to say that for the first time in my life I am becoming prejudiced against African Americans. I have worked with them, socialized with them, and called them friends, not knowing that they hated white people for nothing that I've done but what the Jeremiah Wrights of the world have told them to think.

What a sad commentary on Barack Obama. He will never become president because we are getting sick and tired of his supporters and we will vote against Obama, whoever he runs against, because we don't like the people around him.

Posted by: Jake Sadcase D | April 10, 2008 4:56 AM

Heh. The hospitals denied receiving phone calls from the Clinton campaign? Would you expect them to ADMIT it?

----------

One really good point made above: If we had truly UNIVERSAL health care, the hospitals wouldn't have to ask about insurance and deposits and such when someone came in. They would KNOW that the person was insured -- because EVERYONE would be insured.

Actually iirc what would happen under Clinton's plan if someone came in without insurance, is the hospital office people would ENROLL them in Medicare right then (or whatever plan would be best for them).

I believe the media is purposely interferring in the election. They blamed Canada for interfering but it is the media. Think about this, the giant news stations, whom are predominantly wealthy white men, with a few exceptions, want McCain to win. They get the democratic party so divided by negative reporting on one then the other that come the General election, McCain has virtually no competition.

I am surprised at how simple minded and unsophisticated many of these comments are. If they could only appreciate the idea that the truth is not dependent upon any set of verifiable facts. Does it matter whether or not the deceased is a woman or a man, was or was not pregnant, needed or didn't need health care services or health care insurance; what matters is our dedication, regardless of the facts to reform the health care system. Don't you agree?

What is very clear is that a friend of the young woman's family told a fundamentally true and tragic story to Senator Clinton; the details not written out and given to Clinton of hospital A or hospital B is aside from the point. This story serves to illustrate the struggles of people who do not have health insurance. Instead of discussing the serious issue that many tens of millions of Americans lack basic health insurance, many people writing above have some obsession with taking every story that contains the word Clinton and finding a way to use it to support their pre-conceived idea that there must be a lie in there somewhere. Then, having found what they call a lie, they use their own distortion of the facts as further evidence to reinforce their opinion.
In the meantime, serious issues are not discussed, such as the fact that so many people lack health insurance and often skip preventive care, thus going to hospitals once a problem has progressed and is far more dangerous and expensive to treat; or the fact that even people with insurance often have claims denied and that a lot of our health care dollars go to insurance company profits and paperwork rather than healthcare..... unless people start focusing on actual problems and solutions they will vote for candidates who spin themselves as fun to be with, rather than people who understand issues in great depth and can challenge others to identify and to implement solutions to important problems.

Obama's followers should apologize to Hillary Clinton for misleading reporters on the facts.
Hillary Clinton was the real Pioneer in Healthcare and she took a lot of heat from the ignoramuses in her party and the Repugnants who crucified her. UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE WAS PIONEERED BY HILLARY when Obama was learning how to tie his political shoelaces! Why is it In Canada a sad joke that the major cause for bankruptcies in the States is Medical bills, when the Canadian national Healthcare plan was enacted back in 1965, and no woman is refused hospital care, or allowed to die for $100 lousy bucks. Give HRC credit for being the pioneer. She's unveiled a great breast cancer national plan and her lifelong interest in children's health care is legendary. Guess what? Obama's campaign manager, the ungrateful David Axelord's own child has benefitted from HIllary's starting a special Program and Fund for children with epilepsy and her special research yielded great results, altho DAvid has had his axe sharpened to it HRC and say his own unique 'thanks'....
The Obamyopics should realize that best thing, unless they want Johnny Gun in the House, is for Obama to wait 8 years and let the strongest, most capable candidate get nomination. Hillary's the one the repugnants are truly afraid of, so they voted in caucuses for Obama!
After all, Obama Himself said in 2004 when he had just been elected and was asked if he'd run in '08:
"No, I don't think my resume would permit to form the needed Judgment in such short time...." Yup, BO, you said it! Now that was JUST WORDS! Let's see you act on them,eh?
And remember what McCain said about Hillary when asked in Bagdad in '05: "I am sure Sen. Clinton would make a very good president". Right on!!

The Obamamaniacs are so disgusting. You are all acting as if you were all under hypnosis so that all of you can not see the reality Barrack Obama is leading this county into. And for those Hillary haters, perhaps all of you are test tube babies and not born out of a woman's womb, otherwise you will show a little bit of respect to a woman even if you disagree with her policies. Remember, Hillary does not need these insults and this executive office to live comfortably in life afterwards. (She already has $104 million!) She is fighting for all Americans because America's future is at stake. She cares for everybody, and yes, for you too Hillary haters!

Michele! Thank you for your article, which comes as an ominous warning for all of Obama's supporters. I too am more than willing to support Obama in the general election, yes, even though I am upset that on paper Hillary's is so obviously the better candidate with much more legislation passed per year average, much more command of the policies, many more original ideas, more proposed solutions, and much more political experience abroad; even though Barack's proposed plans are near identical to Hillary's, solely because he has all but pirated her plans yet without understanding them in detail; and even though I have already donated over a $1,000 to Hillary's campaion, I will surely vote for Obama over McCain. After all, Obama's race has nothing to do with my support for Hillary. I simply like her candidacy more than I like Obama's. The problem is, the hateful ABC-voters (as in, Anybody-But_Clinton) are so appallingly gratuitious in their negative campaigning, that they will most certainly turn off a lot of prospective voters--voters who too agree with Geraldine Ferraro (that Obama is winning primarily because of the attention he is getting being Black) and who too are yet just as willing to look past race and vote for Obama. Obama supporters, listen up: you need us more than we need you. Obama will be the nominee and he will be up against a full-grown GOP machine. Obama cannot possibly win the general election without the Democratic party being unified, without Hillary's voters's support, and without White voters continuing to look pass race. In light of the Reverend Wright's bigotry and in light of all the petty race-bating from Obama's staff, white voters have yet proven to remain incredibly tolerant. But, this culture of enmity from Obama's supporters is making a lot of potential Democratic supporters, like myself, quite thin-skinned. In other words, chill out or you will certainly undermine your candidate's chances.

Wow! I've never seen this many comments before... but I would like to add one myself.

First, to prevent more media bias, let's start contacting the advertisers on MSNBC and CNN... they're the ones who don't want Hillary elected... they pull the strings.

Second, I would like Obama to please address the following questions I have:
Why didn't he support the Clintons when (I think it was Bill) said early in the campaign that it took both races to push civil rights through? I seem to remember a white president, and white guards protecting those students entering Univ. of Miss. If Obama truly supports bridging the divide, why was this point labeled racist instead of being heralded as a truth?
Personally, I come from Chicago, and you can be sure that after his playing the race card so many times instead of fessing up, I'll never vote for him to be garbage collector, let alone Senator... I can only pray he doesn't get the nomination for president.
I truly believe he would be the democratic version of George Bush.

I really wish that the Oprah News Network, AKA CBS, never ran the Bosnia story in the obvious, stealth swifboat attack against Hillary. What that did was say to people, "forget about Reverend Wright and just vote for Obama, it doesn't matter that he has racist ties and sympathizes with Anti-American sentiment, its okay. Its also okay that he would like to sit down with the fascist dictators of Iran and North Korea, just vote for him. Show us that you aren't racist and then you can feel good about yourself?"

I don't get it.

The story is in essence true -- true enough! While Hillary has proven to be as gullible qas most of us (read, Proposal to go to War in Iraq, which was supported by almost everyone in the Sendate), on principle she can stand her ground. Unfortunately, she is always vulnerable to knit-picking attacks about tiny specifics in any story. Which are similar to the attacks Moore gets for all his stories in Sicko. The truth of the matter is that there are hospitals that will not admit you for care unless you have viable insurance, whether or not you have $100 dollars to hand over.

Posted by: Folkwolf101 | April 9, 2008 3:28 PM

Yes, there may be some discrepancies in the story. But, bottom line is that it happens. It is not the hospitals employees that are turning away the uninsured, they are getting the rap for this. I am sure that at the end of their shift, they are consumed with quilt that they had to turn away a patient. This is beyond their control. It is hospital policy. Sometimes they find a way to help a patient with out insurance and take a chance that the hospital bureaucrats will not find out about this good deed. I am sure even the hospital bureaucrates feel some remorse about this situation. It is really out of their hands also. That is where the Universal Health Insurance will come into play. No one has to feel guilty about turning away a patient.

Hillary just wanted to point out about the crises we are having in this country about health care. But, things like this do happen, unfortunately. That is why she is trying to promote her health care policy. Which in my view and many others, is best for all in the health care system.

It's tough, life is not easy, but together we can do the right thing. This country needs to unite. That is where Hillary comes into play. I am sure there is a lot of bugs to work out and she knows that. She also knows that her country will stand behind her and put this country on its way to prosperity.

Posted by: Moskovia | April 9, 2008 2:50 PM

I can't believe people are criticing whether Clinton is telling the whole truth but nothing the truth. The point is that there are problems in our health care system and human lives and in jeopardy. It saddens me very much that we as a nation and a world leading country can become so heartless and senseless. At least Clinton is addressing the issue and calling people's attention to it. She dares to say it, she wants to work it and improve our improverished world and society, knowing all the pundits would be after her like ravenous wolves. Hillary haters look inside yourself and ask what have you done for other people and not for yourself.

Posted by: Sunnyside | April 9, 2008 12:46 PM

It is a great comfort to me that the majority of the comments are pro Hillary. This gives me hope that the media bashing and bias against Hillary is recognized by the good people as just that! In Obama's world, use the word monkey and you get fired. He is a phony and a hypocrit. He, like a camelion, changes depending on the surroundings. The kind of change he wants is to change his color and views when beneficial to him. Then he sends his surrogates to explain. What a joke he is!!!

Posted by: Big Easy | April 9, 2008 12:33 PM

I must say: While at the outset of this contest, I was comfortable in the knowledge that even if my candidate - Hillary - did not secure the nomination, I would support the victor. However, whenever I have had occasion to go on-line and read comments posted by Obama supporters, I find myself so offended by their vulgarity that I shudder at the notion of being, in any way, aligned with them. Should Obama get the nomination, you guys may do more to guarantee McCain's election than the GOP.

Posted by: michele | April 9, 2008 12:04 PM

Hillary told the truth? Except the women had insurance; and she was not refused care at any hospital . This is indeed a tragic case. But the main points Hillary was making that this was caused by a lack of insurance or $ 100 and was refused just is inconsistant with the facts. Has the bar fallen that low

Clintons have been under the spotlight for years. We know everything about them. They have weathered it all,and they will weather all this bias and negativity that has been shown against them.Is it jealousity I wonder?.They excel and always will.Hillary will make a wonderful President. God Bless her.Viv&Andrew

Please stop the madness people!!!! Obama lies over and over again and it is hunkey dorey, but when hillary over indulges in the facts its "look at her she lies" who cares the bottom line is that there are many horror stories about americans not getting the services they need. Our mortality rates are comparable to third world countries when we have the best innovative health services in the world.AND THAT IS A FACT.Do you really think that people don't die in this country because they don't or can not get the health services they need? It is time to get real. hillary has made it her life's work to change the health care system. she can put the economy back to gether and make our country great again. when the clintons left the white house they were pratically broke and now look at what they are worth. That seals the deal for me.be afraid, be very afraid! obama cites change, but what change are we facing?bush " changed"things,he even joked about it being his campaign slogan. Obama is bush in black sheeps clothing.

Isn't it interesting how the Obama supporters who spread the "story" that Hillary was lying are busy trying to justify their "belief" rather than apologizing for once again being caught smearing Senator Clinton?

Posted by: Brian | April 9, 2008 2:14 AM

I am upset with these people I read that are posting comments because Hillary Clinton talked about our failing health-care system - and used as example an incident from Ohio. AN INCIDENT SHE HEARD AND FELT IT NEEDED REPEATING FOR GOD'S SAKES! It did need to be repeated. This is about our broken health-care system.
I heard Hillary talk about this long before she talked about Bosnia (which most bloggers have all the facts wrong).

So people condemning her for "lying" as they call it, are also LYING BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE TIMES, PLACES, INCIDENTS AND SO ON correct. Oh geez, all these supporters of Obama are liars, too.
All these people sound like right wing Republicans. Are they all from the Democratic party? They are not Democrats.
This is a primary, and it sounds like World War Three as I hear it from Obama supporters. These supporters have changed from that - supporters - to CULT MEMBERS!
And sadly the media is fanning the flames. Even the media and journalists that I thought were sincere and honest in reporting the news have jumped on the bandwagon of hate news - they are sounding like Limbaugh or Savage, commentators I have never considered ethical.
No wonder McCain is loving this extended primary season. The primary season which has yet to allow millions of voters to be heard!

Posted by: Mclindar | April 9, 2008 1:47 AM

nice find korny. actually, the story rings even truer w/ the added details. as it shows how people have to become trained seals to navigate a health system that operates in a manner that would not be tolerated in any other first-world nation.
but, this is also an example of another missed opportunity. and shows a pattern like not reading the NSA before the Iraq vote- and not having a clue what's happening in her own campaign. people don't expect the pols to be titans, but rather informed and inspired people who asks people for their organic assistance, which is why obama has epitomized the next step in our nations development.

Posted by: jacade | April 9, 2008 1:12 AM

In Washington state, it was virtually a forgone conclusion that Obama would win in the caucuses, but the reality of what that meant was nearly shocking. Obama people were blockading the doors with bodies, shoving Obama sign-up sheets at every person who walked in--without explaining what the sheets were. Many people signed them thinking they were the voting registers and then ended up confused and bewildered when they found out they had not signed in properly.

Watching the chaos flying all around, and seeing the pushiness and overwhelmingly rabid nature of the Obama supporters in action, I finally had a reason to make a choice. In the end, it all came down to a simple gut reaction. I did not want to be one of them--those wild-eyed, fast-talking, honestly scary Obama supporters stomping over everything in their path.

Posted by: jfb | April 9, 2008 1:09 AM

How come the rest of the media has not put this article front and center in their newspapers, magazines and on TV and radio? I am so very sick and tired of the way the media has taken an election away from the truth and thrown its support behind a little known man named Barack Obama. No one ever queries any of his remarks or statements, or his voting history while in the Illinois Senate or in the US Senate. Or his involvement with the Chicago person presently on trial for several crimes. Or why he didn't leave the church whose pastor spoke hate ladden sermons about our great country. He has always gotten a pass and Hillary gets hit for any and everything she says and does. I'm supporting her through the election, even if I have to write her name on the ballot. I truly cannot believe how good people can be so easy swayed by a well and energenic speaker and follow him like sheep to slaughter. Barack Obama has not been tested or vented and does not deserve to be our next President even if he sends chills up the legs of one commentator, Chris Mattews. Lies, half truths, spins and misquotes are what the media has given to Hillary and we just set back and believe. Very sad indeed!!!!

Posted by: JFB | April 9, 2008 1:01 AM

Here is the bottom line. Obama supporters and the media have so distorted everything about Clinton now we are to think she is a bold face liar in just about everything. Noone questions all of Obama's exaggerated truths in his book, his backtracking statements about his pastor or NAFTA Gate, or how he copies other people's speeches or Clinton's plans -- so PLEASE!!!! Here is the bottom truth my friends. Obama supporters, young as they are, think twice when you fire accusations at not only Clinton but also at her supporters. By being negative is to say you don't need us. Wake up people with no life expreience! I for one am tired and ashamed as a Democrat to know how bias and sexist the media and you Obama supporters have been. Without the 23 million thus far who have voted for Clinton, many like myself, will tell you to go kiss Obama's chances at the White House good-bye. Grow up and convince me why I should vote for someone who claims to be above this nonsense.

Posted by: JQ | April 9, 2008 12:35 AM

I completely agree with Annie that the Obama supporters will say anything to make Hillary look bad,yet they seem to forget Obama's "tall tail's".Like saying his parents met at the Selma march, when the truth is he was concieved 4 years before the Selma march.Like him saying at first he had never heard Rev. Wright say these hate-filled statements, then in his speech on race,he admits to the world he has heard these statements before. And he also lied about how much money he took from Rezco, then he came out and said the amount of money he took was more than he originally admitted. As for Gary's comment asking what is so bad about the Ohio woman not getting treated by the first hospital the bad thing is both she and her unborn child died.If you are a woman who has ever been pregnant you know that preclampsia is a treatable condition, but if it goes untreated it can lead to death, which is what happened to the Ohio woman.I agree with whoever said that the comments by the Obama supporters are the reason most Hillary supporters will be voting for McCain in the general election. This is my first time voting for president, but if Obama wins the democratic nomination, this 20 year old kentucky girl will gladly vote for the 71 year old Arizona senator. And it has nothing to do with Obama,he can thank his rude supporters for that!!!!

Let's see - The woman incurred medical expenses at Hospital A of $4,426.00 for a rhinoplasty and breast augmentation. She does not pay Hospital A until after they sue her for the money. At a later date, she becomes pregnant. Hospital A is apparently unaware of this. She seeks and receives medical care at Hospital B. Unfortunately she and her baby die. (I presume this was after the child was born because otherwise said child would be referred to as a "fetus".)
The "aunt" who claims this to be a true story does not want to name Hospital A because that will cause the aunt to have to answer more phone calls. The lawyers handling the deceased woman's lawsuits against Hospital A do not want any publicity for their pro bono efforts.
I cannot afford to pay the mortgage on this
bridge because of the sub-prime crisis. Can we all agree that all politicians lie all the time?

Posted by: Rolyat | April 8, 2008 10:33 PM

The sad thing is the HRC cannot dispute the big Bosnia lie, so now they are going to smear the media, Obama, comedians, and anyone else that gets in there way. Their determined to try to persuade people that Hillary should not have to take responsibility for her BIG lie.

Apparently Hillary got the Bosnia story right in her book, but the speech as delivered (or as transcribed!) left out the words 'threat of.'

However, Obama IN HIS BOOK told a story about being conceived because of a civil rights march -- which happened 4 years after he was born. That's not a misspeak or even an error in editing. His book has been through multiple reprints and this inaccuracy has been point d out many times, but there it remains. And it's not somethign that could happen by accident or mis-memory: he knew it was false when he wrote it.

(Either that, or he didn't know when the famous march happened. :-) Which would be sloppy research ; not ready for prime time.)

What amazes me about the stupidity of the people posting to these websites is this. Democrats at one time had health care and women's issues as a core Democratic value. Chilren, poverty, and many other moral issues. There has been a loss of morality in the Democratic Party and frankly the Republican Party.

From my perspective the only candidate out there who actually represents the people is Hillary Clinton and that's why so many people who are devoid of common sense, morals or values are supporting Barack Obama. I watch these blogs and see that they bludgeon a fine woman who has stood up to criticism where Barack Obama can't handle a fraction of it!

So there you have it the guy is weak, cowardly and impotent! Hillary is a GIANT and when I have gone to the democratic meetings locally and see in a caucus state the people who have supported Barack Obama, and who are frankly losers! I know why the Democrats will lose in the Fall and why they will deserve to lose the election!

Good luck losers! You don't deserve a fine woman like Hillary, but then when you have a group like Moveon.org who calls a man of Honor General Betrayus and he is doing his duty to his country. Well that's just what you deserve! People are sick! They deserve what they get for their government because they can't think they follow! They don't read they watch television and vote over their telephone!

They watch Chris Matthews spit and turn red or Keith Olbermann turn red faced and nearly pee himself with delight! Yes you are the mental morons who listened to the marching drum beat for war when Wolf Blitzer and Jack Cafferty the old fag who needs to step down from public view and give us a fresh look at someone who can talk sense marched everyone off to war!

You deserve what you get in the Fall which will be four more years of the same thanks to your lunacy which the remainder of Americans will have to throw a bucket of cold water on you and say, WAKE UP FOOLS and get a grip, we aren't going to the dark side! We actually do respect our nation!

Next time get it right and nominate a REAL AMERICAN! Hillary Clinton is your only chance at honest, decent leadership and you frankly don't deserve her like you didn't deserve Al Gore in 2000!

Ms. Kornblut,

I must tell you that this is the undoubtly most irresponsible thing I have seen a journalist write during this campaign.

The aunts story does not hold water. Are you familiar with COBRA and EMTLA federal legislation? You would THINK that Hillary---with her 35 years of experience---her claiming to be soooo ready on day one to address the health of this nation----her presense in the white house and senate when the legislation was debated would be more than aware---would you not?

If her outrage was NOT feigned would she have had staff looking into what she claimed to be an atrocity? Wouldn't they have figured out just how ridiculous the tale was?

LOOK.....A hospital MAY NOT under federal law refuse to treat a patient who is acutely in need of care until and unless that patient has a screening examination by a physician and is stable for transfer (to home or another facility).

In the instance of a pregnant woman that would include the life of the infant and would persist up until and beyond (if indicated) delivery.

These laws are posted in every Emergency Room in America.

Pre-eclampsia is a gynecologic emergency! With or without the name of the hospital you had the ability to check the premise of the aunts remarks with any hospital in the United States.

Instead of tittering on TV last pm about this article you could have googled COBRA and EMTALA. You could have contacted the President of any number of Emergency Medicine or Gynecologic medical societies. You did no backgrounding, did you?

You a have written a piece that alleges that a hospital committed a federal crime that could lead to that hospital being restricted from all federal payments. You have made a physician potentially liable (PERSONALLY-as most malpractice will not cover) $50,000 FOR EACH COUNT of error found in his/her actions.

But most importantly, you without so much as the blink of an EYE have misinformed your readers with regard to their rights to care in the face of an emergency!! That.....no matter how much you'd rationalize it.....could cost lives!

HOW DARE YOU!

I thought your laughing at Hillary's blatantly sexist "it takes me longer to dress" "joke"?? yesterday on Race to the White House distasteful enough. BUT THIS??

You are lazy AND you are irresponsible. That makes you dangerous to this society. It also makes you a lousy journalist!

Shame on you!

And shame on all the Hillary people who cared so little about this woman and her baby and believed so little in this nation that they did not care to check the facts either!

Posted by: RKWM, MD | April 8, 2008 9:48 PM

The pigs that ADVERTISED this as a LIE or UNTRUE story are the same ones that WE know have tried every DIRTY FILTHY thing they CAN to win. But you know what POLL yourselves to death...because Patriotic, GOOD REAL AMERICANS WANT CLINTON....Obama can take his racist wife and racist Minister and run for President of AFRICA!

Posted by: Cheryl | April 8, 2008 9:44 PM

It doesn't matter what the truth is because the mainstream media's message always was that Hillary lied, and never mind the facts. This rebuttal from a family member will not get a fraction of the play that the hospital's denial did. Such is the state of journalism today. The fix is in; the "straight-talking" McCain is a shoe-in because the media will never question him or pile onto him in the manner that Hillary is on a daily basis.

Well the Trio for PREZ,McCain, Clinton and Obama none are offering care that the rest of the industrialized countries of the world do.
Free Health Care

USA is obsessed with getting a free ride with low taxes, low gas prices, low food prices, money poured into bigger military toys at the expense of education and health.

The story may be embellished by Clinton but what was illustrated happens everyday in America. I would praise the "TRIO" if they all stood up and said not on my watch. To heck with the HMOs,the AMA, the Drug Companies everyone will be covered.

No country in the "World" spends more of the GDP on healthcare per capita than the USA and get weaker results.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/04/opinion/04krugman.html

"Specifically, new estimates say that a plan resembling Mrs. Clinton's would cover almost twice as many of those now uninsured as a plan resembling Mr. Obama's -- at only slightly higher cost."

"The Clinton plan is, however, more explicit about affordability, promising to limit insurance costs as a percentage of family income. And it also seems to include more funds for subsidies."

"One plan achieves more or less universal coverage; the other, although it costs more than 80 percent as much, covers only about half of those currently uninsured."

"If Mrs. Clinton gets the Democratic nomination, there is some chance -- nobody knows how big -- that we'll get universal health care in the next administration. If Mr. Obama gets the nomination, it just won't happen."

Posted by: HealthCareNow | April 8, 2008 7:54 PM

The Clinton campaign claimed they attempted to vet the story by contacting the hospitals involved.

When CNN asked the hospitals, they all claimed that the Clinton campaign had never contacted them.

Posted by: CWatson | April 8, 2008 7:48 PM

Under Obama's plan, over 15 million Americans would remain uninsured. Some of those people WILL die due to lack of coverage.

The MA plan is not the same as the Clinton plan, which has provisions for controlling costs. Further, many health policy analysts and economists, as well as John and Elizabeth Edwards, favor mandates. Car insurance is mandated. Why not health insurance?

Posted by: EP | April 8, 2008 7:45 PM

"FACT: Hillary's plan mandates health care coverage for ALL Americans"

Fact:
Jan 2008, Health Care Statistics from the Government of Massachusetts
http://www.mass.gov/Eeohhs2/docs/dhcfp/r/pubs/08/key_indicators_0108.pdf

In 2006, when the new program was introduced, 6.4% of Ma residents were not covered. A year and a half later, implementing an approach like Hillary's, 5.7% remain not covered. The MA/Clinton approach didn't make much of a dent in the problem. Neither plan means coverage for "everyone" even when it's universal.

The other scary part about what Hillary's selling on healthcare is the cost of her approach - about twice Obama's at a bduget level. MA did that and found the costs went through the roof - way over budget.

If we've learned anything in this campaign, it's that we can't always believe what Hillary tells us.

Posted by: CWatson1 | April 8, 2008 7:39 PM

How long until the New York Times corrects its claim that Clinton made it all up.
I'll hold my breath.
They seem to be willing to shed the reputation for integrity that they've built up over the centuries for their one present mission of getting Obama elected.

Posted by: patrice lenya | April 8, 2008 7:39 PM

I used to work in the insurance industry (not one of my prouder moments) and I know a little bit about how insurance works.

The only way that we will be able to have Universal coverage is to have EVERYONE covered. If people are left out, the unhealthy will sign up and a lot of the healthy people will not. The insurance "pool" is then filled with unhealthy people causing the premiums to be high. Obama has said that he wants people to be able to wait until they need insurance (when they are sick or hurt) to purchase it. This is short sighted- his causes the pool to be unbalanced. Hillary's plan is REALISTIC. Her plan makes for a more balanced pool (healthy and unhealthy) and this will reduce the premiums for everyone. Obama's plan is naïve and he is naïve in his thinking. This is just one reason he is not ready to be our president. I'm not calling Obama bad names and I don't hate him or his supporters. I love OUR country and I don't want us to suffer through another four years of failed Bush policies (McCain). The Republicans WANT him to be the nominee. I believe they are sending money to his campaign to help him win the nomination. They know that they will be able to exploit his naivety in the general election and win in November.

Posted by: AlanBTR | April 8, 2008 7:26 PM

Hillary got the story correct and it illustrates the even bigger story here, the health care system is fractured and it is going to take a huge overhaul to fix it.
Universal health care for ALL americans is the only way and HRC can get it done.
Why doesn't the media focus on that for a change? And stop slinging mud at Hillary.
Go Hillary!

Posted by: sue | April 8, 2008 7:16 PM

FACT: People die, have died, and will continue to die because of lack of health insurance.

FACT: Obama's health care plan would leave as many as 15 million Americans uninsured.

FACT: Hillary's plan mandates health care coverage for ALL Americans.

Granata said:

"In this litigious society no hospital would have the nerve to turn away anyone who is presenting at their emergency room for care, especially a pregnant woman, as the lawsuit and loss of government funding would be disastrous for the hospital. "

BS: The hospital is required to provide care when the woman's life in is danger. Not when preventive care would ensure that her life would not be in danger.

Lawsuits have been lost on far less than inadequate prenatal care.

Wow...thought I was out there alone in my frustration with the Media bias against Hillary. Watching Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann be so one sided has made me quit watching MSNBC. It's pathetic to watch FOX to get a somewhat level view....they're equally against both.

I'm a 51 year old white male and have voted Democratic in every Presidential election. Last year my wife and I were discussing the election before Hillary or Obama had announced they were running. I told my wife that I thought that Hillary would be good but the whole Bill thing with all the baggage made me want her not to run. As the debates started and I watched her in debate after debate kick the other's butts, I came to see her as by far the best canidate. To be fair, hearing Joe Biden warning about Pakistan just two weeks or so before Bhutto was killed showed me that he would be a great Vice-President.

I want to scream at Hillary for not turning to Obama and saying, Yes, you were against the war but if I remember at the time, you were a Illinois Senator and I was a U.S. Senator and I think I had access to a little bit more information and had just a little bit more responsibilty in the matter. As for change, have you ever met Mitch McConnell? Is he suddenly going to agree with everything Democrats propose the day after you are elected?

The media is in love with Obama as it once was with McCain. This healthcare story is another example of the media bias against Hillary. I can't explain the sniper story...it makes me scratch my head and appears to be a very fair thing to question Hillary about. The healthcare story being proven true.....watch that get buried. Obama doesn't have to even run against Hillary, the media does it for him.

Posted by: Jeff | April 8, 2008 6:55 PM

Fact is, the hospital denied the sory because it made them look bad. Fact is, Hillary's version as true, but the hospital didn't like the story being told.

Focus on anything else if you like, but the story isn't that uncommon. Hospitals don't like these kinds of stories coming out though.... and who can blame them?

Posted by: auntbeth | April 8, 2008 6:51 PM

If she had really practiced law and studied the Health care system she so wants to recreate she would have known:

1) In this litigious society no hospital would have the nerve to turn away anyone who is presenting at their emergency room for care, especially a pregnant woman, as the lawsuit and loss of government funding would be disastrous for the hospital.

2) The health care system works for millions of people and needs to be reworked not retired. Why not start by insuring the folks who don't have any insurance rather than recreating the wheel? She also doesn't understand how comprehensive the NY State's program healthy Families is. Why doesn't she know of programs in the state she was elected to represent?

3) She is not intelligent (well educated, yes) but hardly educable. The reason her first health care package was doomed was because it was too large; more appropriate for FDR's government than Bill Clinton's. And here she goes again. Stubbornness is not strength it is often just stupidity.

His father was a Saudi and thats why he's so uncomfortable with his middle name because his father gave it to his as proof of his Saudi heritage. His name would not be Hussein if he were African. So whats this thing about Race Barak Hussein Obama? Shouldn't you be supporting your Middle-eastern brothers and sisters. And thats just the tip of the iceburger obamalamaliar.

The way Obama's supporters have piled onto this stories tells me something about their priorities: Forget that a woman and her child died. Forget that universal health care could have saved them. Just focus on hating Hillary for trying to draw attention to the health care problems in this country.

It's ugly.

hillary tells lies. she also tells facts. and she some times throws them together to get at a point that will appeal to whomever she's trying to appeal to at the time. it's the "i'm for whatever will get me elected or at least another BIG BOOK DEAL" clinton way.

Hey I think it's sad that people (especially the one's who support Sen. Obama)seem not to care what they say about Hillary Clinton. It is clear that alot of you have (for what ever reason) hatred towards her as a person. I dont agree with everthing Hillary or Obama may say, but this story seem to have some truth to it. Alot of you bloggers need to get a life!!!!

You Obama worshippers go on and on about Hillary Clinton "misspeaking" as if Rezko, Wright, and Sinclair never happened. Sit tight and enjoy the Kool Aid while you still can...the dirt is all coming out on boy wonder.

kmb08, enjoyed your blog.
Barack lies all the time, but his lies does not get the attention as Hillary's embellished story gets.

Posted by: butterfly2 | April 8, 2008 4:45 PM

Thank you for stepping up and correcting this story.

I'm tired of the Media Bias in this race its totally inappropriate for media to manipulate the out come of this election. Although I believe in free speech it has gotten to the point that the government needs to set some regulations on fair reporting and bias.

Posted by: CAMom | April 8, 2008 4:38 PM

Obama Supporters: You state that Obama has shown the most character, met his guffs and negatives without any distractions. The best is yet to come. He will be faced with the Larry Sinclair story. We will then see his "real" character. He is not going to get out of this one! You supporters bring such anger, hostilit, and negativism to this world. We do not want a president that has any ties to this behavior. You need to grow up NOW! I hope you don't kiss your mothers with those mouths....

I have been a nurse for over 35 years. In an ER people are treated according to the complaint and severity of their condition. If EMTs;Paramedics/Firemen respond to an emergency siutuation and it is life threatening they are required to take the patient to the nearest hospital regardless of insurance coverage.I have ben in an HMO ER and have witnessed the screening nurse find a way to treat the person w/o that HMOs insurance. Also have heard them calling other facillitities to seek care for a non-life threatening situation. Yes, mistakes nay happen but the majority are no do to lack of insurance. I had a patient who thought he could not go to a hospital 2 minutes from his home because a sign read : Emergency Services. It was not an emergency in his mind so he went to a hospital 30 minutes from home. A good number of peo[ple do not understand policy/procedure. A pre-eclampsic woman would most certainly be treated. I would like to know why she did not phone her OB/GYN and he would have called the ER with orders so she would be treated on arrival. I live in San Diego.

Posted by: Kathleen M. Smith | April 8, 2008 4:04 PM

I lived close to one of these hospitals and I have even seen patients being asked for 100.00 up front to see a doctor and it does not mattter if they have insurance or not. Not asked quietly either. The one I am speaking about had seen some things in a CT Scan and did not tell me four years later I had to have another CT Scan and found out the result from the one four years earlier, then went to one of their doctors which was the head of the dept. and the cover up began. He told me it was nothing and we would keep an eye on it. I went to another hospital and doc. in another area and had to have surgery. I was in pain for at least four years that was unnecessary. I dont even blame them for not saying anything four years earlier,we are all human but not wnting to take care of it once we found out is another thing. I know how these places work. all of this is just the tip of it and I am sure this is not the only area but the one in the forefront. No matter who we have for president something needs to be done about health care, insurance and hold doctors and hospitals more accountable for our treatment. We have a lot of problems right now in the US and we need someone who is willing and able to do the job we need done. Who that is i am not sure yet but still willing to listen.

I feel terrible for this family and there loss and hopefully with it being brought out to the public we can start to make some changes. My prayers go out to you.

What Hillary is suffering from is "Mass Media Obama Fantasy". It is a national disgrace that there is such animosity toward one Presidential candidate and such adoration toward another. The nation is getting an unbalanced picture of the election situation.
Thank you Ms. Casto for setting the record straight on this one. Do you think that any of the media will report the acknowledgement of Hillary's story? I wonder!.

Posted by: afed | April 8, 2008 3:18 PM

As a nurse, I feel deep sympathy and compassion for this family. For the media to have blown this out of all proportion in an effort to discredit Hillary, once again, at this family's expense is a travesty. My apologies to this family for the media's insincere coverage of this most trying of times for the family and my sincerest condolences on the loss of your loved one.

For the life of me, I could never understand you people who hate Senator Clinton so completely. I've never seen anything like it in all my years alive (50 to be exact)--not even the riots in the 60'
s produced this much hatred.

Senator Clintons point is taken as it should be, and not out of Context. The woman's child was still born, if she was under the CARE you all claim she had I believe the DR's would have KNOWN there was a problem.

Secondly, speaking from my own experience, I was refused again and again, an operation I needed for 5 years, to this day, I have medical problems which would have been avoided, if the dr. would have agreed to do the operation, which they did five years LATER, WHEN I HAD INSURANCE.

I didn't have it the 5 years, I fought and fought and fought with DR's to do the operation and put me out of my misery, THEY refused.

This story is quite believable, and I wholeheartedly understand where that little girl came from, worrying about the $100

Your right Senator Clinton, they MOVED TO LATE, I believe that baby and mother would have been alive and well TODAY, if the medical was in PLACE for her.

We're going NO WHERE, YOU GET OVER IT

And we certainly haven't LOST

Keep the heart and the faith HRC, we got your back

Posted by: michelina | April 8, 2008 3:08 PM

GO HILLARY!! Thank You for finding out the true FACTS - Shame on the media for airing a False story and trashing Senator Clinton without checking the Facts.
Obama will not be elected due to his radical "friends" - his judgment and background are far too questionable to be elected President of the UNITED States!

Posted by: Molly | April 8, 2008 2:38 PM

Of course a hospital isn't going to admit that they turned her away or gave her discouraging information on the phone, or told her in the past that they would require a deposit of $100 before seeing her again. They will just try to confuse the issue.

If at some later point she did get some insurance and was treated at another hospital -- the fact remains that our current system is so confusing and so profit-oriented that it results in people not getting treatment when they first need it.

We need Hillary's intellect and practicality in office to make a better, clearer, more efficient system. Her SCHIP healthcare program for children has been in effect for years and proved very successful and efficient.

You're displaying a top down knowledge of the health care system as it applies to emergency care and uninsured patients. It may work that way by law, by design, and in the minds of probably well intended people such as yourself... but this is not the way it works in real life.

There are a MYRIAD number of points in the process of an uninsured person entering the health care system where those in control of the situation in ERs and hospitals, even non-profits, can refuse (without refusing) entire classes of tests and treatment options, stall, or otherwise ignore the medical needs of the uninsured.

Posted by: jammerbirdi | April 8, 2008 2:34 PM

The Obama's Ad claims that, he did not take money from oil companies and lobbyists. But the facts proof he did!

I am for sure, if playing such false "Ad" in Hillary's campaign, the media must take deeply firing Hillary's behavior, I has learn from this event and well understand how Media treat's Hillary has different to Obama, but this is unfair at all.

The media must stop for electing their favor's person for the president; what we need a USA president should let American citizens make their decision.

Posted by: Kam | April 8, 2008 2:24 PM

CCS, you are so right. I'm one of those Clinton supporters who in the past had no problem voting for Obama, but I'm so furious at the interference of his supporters starting with the "leadership" in the Democratic party and the media, that for the first time in my life I will vote for a republican. They actually had the decency to let the process run its course.

Lt, you are mixing apples with oranges. Why would anyone question the veracity of this type of story? It is very common occurrence throught the country. In addition, why would you doubt a police officer?

Posted by: Liz | April 8, 2008 2:18 PM

First thing I thought when I heard the media jumping all over the fact that the hospital was denying the story is... uh... and the MSM is taking the HOSPITAL'S word for it? lol!

I'd take a third hand story told by Richard NIXON before I'd listen to what a hospital is saying about ANYTHING let alone a denial of treatment claim.

And people, good lord how stupid this is, are now pointing to the the fact that the woman DID in fact at some point have insurance. But does anyone know or CARE about the details or restrictions of her coverage? Which can be many and varied and potentially put as big a roadblock, financial and psychological, between a patient and badly needed care as NOT having insurance at all.

The stuff is falling under the category of cruelly superficial journalism.

Posted by: | April 8, 2008 2:18 PM

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY IMPORTANT!!!!!!! TO WHOEVER SAID IT ISNT.... ARE HEALTH SYSTEMS ARE FAILING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.. THIS STUFF HAPPENS IN THE ER!!! THEY WALK AROUND NOW WITH CREDIT CARD MACHINES AND A CASH BOX FOR COPAYS RIGHT UPFRONT WHILE YOU ARE BEING SEEN!! IN TRIAGE THEY DO IT!! IF YOU HAVE A RED FLAG ON YOUR NAME THEY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT!! PEOPLE DONT KNOW THEIR RIGHTS AND THIS IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT!!

NOT FOR PROFIT=AFFORDABLE INSURANCE

Posted by: pa | April 8, 2008 2:16 PM

The only shame I see in this story is that Hillary told of just ONE person's experience ... even if there is some controversy over the accuracy of the details.

I'd gladly share with her my story for use all across the country, because I'm extremely angry about how a corrupt claims adjuster was allowed to make fraudulent statements to deny my Workers' Comp coverage after I was injured in the line of duty as a volunteer firefighter. Why was he not punished for committing this felony? Because Governor Schwarzenegger is determined to shift the financial burden from employers to injured workers.

Abuses are taking place every day throughout our nation. And people are being permanently injured every day by medical personnel who make mistakes. Hillary absolutely should call attention to the problems until the day comes that we have no more abuses and mistakes in our healthcare system. Our lives depend on it.

I agree with Sally, you can't make us vote for Obama if he is the nominee, and I will not vote for McCain either, however in my state, a blue state, it won't really matter, because the Democrat always wins the state. But, I will vote for the remainder of the Democratic ticket in November. We need more Democrats in Congress for sure.

Posted by: J. | April 8, 2008 1:52 PM

If Obama win's the Democratic Nomination; You'll see all the intellengent Democratic voters vote Republican. The more comes out about Obama the less electable he is...It may take until the general election, for the american people to see the true Obama.
I'll give McCain my vote......

Posted by: Rajencajen | April 8, 2008 1:23 PM

If Obama is the nominee after the way this process has gone, Obama supporters may as well count on a significant "girlcott" in November. Many of us will either sit out the election, write in Hillary if necessary, or vote Republican or third party. Strong-arming Obama maniacs MAY (and may very well NOT) succeed in hustling Hillary out but you can't MAKE us vote for Obama!!!! He can't win.

Trying to take Hillary Clinton down on things as trivial as this really saddens me. How about we take a look at this laundry list of Lies from Obama, and see if there is any comparison?
Hillary Clinton is our only chnace to fix things in the U.S.A. unless we want to continue on the read we are on right now. So sad... Take a look:

OBAMA LAUNDRY LIST OF LIES as of April 03, 2008 (68 lies and counting)

1.) Selma Got Me Born - LIAR, your parents felt safe enough to have you in 1961 - Selma had no effect on your birth, as Selma was in 1965.

2.) Father Was A Goat Herder - LIAR, he was a privileged, well educated youth, who went on to work with the Kenyan Government.

3.) Father Was A Proud Freedom Fighter - LIAR, he was part of one of the most corrupt and violent governments Kenya has ever had

4.) My Family Has Strong Ties To African Freedom - LIAR, your cousin Raila Odinga has created mass violence in attempting to overturn a legitimate election in 2007, in Kenya. It is the first widespread violence in decades.

6.) My Name is African Swahili - LIAR, your name is Arabic and 'Baraka' (from which Barack came) means 'blessed' in that language. Hussein is also Arabic and so is Obama.

8.) My School In Indonesia Was Christian - LIAR, you were registered as Muslim there and got in trouble in Koranic Studies for making faces (check your own book).

9.) I Was Fluent In Indonesian - LIAR, not one teacher says you could speak the language.

10.) Because I Lived In Indonesia, I Have More Foreign Experience - LIAR, you were there from the ages of 6 to 10, and couldn't even speak the language. What did you learn, how to study the Koran and watch cartoons.

11.) I Am Stronger On Foreign Affairs - LIAR, except for Africa (surprise) and the Middle East (bigger surprise), you have never been anywhere else on the planet and thus have NO experience with our closest allies.

12.) I Blame My Early Drug Use On Ethnic Confusion - LIAR, you were quite content in high school to be Barry Obama, no mention of Kenya and no mention of struggle to identify - your classmates said you were just fine.

13.)An Ebony Article Moved Me To Run For Office - LIAR, Ebony has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn't, and never did, exist.

14.) A Life Magazine Article Changed My Outlook On Life - LIAR, Life has yet to find the article you mention in your book. It doesn't, and never did, exist.

15.) I Won't Run On A National Ticket In '08 - LIAR, here you are, despite saying, live on TV, that you would not have enough experience by then, and you are all about having experience first.

16.) Present Votes Are Common In Illinois - LIAR, they are common for YOU, but not many others have 130 NO VOTES.

21.) The Ethics Bill Was Hard To Pass - LIAR, it took just 14 days from start to finish.

22.) I Wrote A Tough Nuclear Bill - LIAR, your bill was rejected by your own party for its pandering and lack of all regulation - mainly because of your Nuclear Donor, Exelon, from which David Axelrod came.

23.) I Have Released My State Records - LIAR, as of March, 2008, state bills you sponsored or voted for have yet to be released, exposing all the special interests pork hidden within.

24.) I Took On The Asbestos Altgeld Gardens Mess - LIAR, you were part of a large group of people who remedied Altgeld Gardens. You failed to mention anyone else but yourself, in your books.

25.) My Economics Bill Will Help America - LIAR, your 111 economic policies were just combined into a proposal which lost 99-0, and even YOU voted against your own bill.

26.) I Have Been A Bold Leader In Illinois - LIAR, even your own supporters claim to have not seen BOLD action on your part.

27.) I Passed 26 Of My Own Bills In One Year - LIAR, they were not YOUR bills, but rather handed to you, after their creation by a fellow Senator, to assist you in a future bid for higher office.

28.) No One Contacted Canada About NAFTA - LIAR, the Candian Government issued the names and a memo of the conversation your campaign had with them.

29.) I Am Tough On Terrorism - LIAR, you missed the Iran Resolution vote on terrorism and your good friend Ali Abunimah supports the destruction of Israel.

30.) I Am Not Acting As President Yet - LIAR, after the NAFTA Memo, a dead terrorist in the FARC, in Colombia, was found with a letter stating how you and he were working together on getting FARC recognized officially.

31.) I Didn't Run Ads In Florida - LIAR, you allowed national ads to run 8-12 times per day for two weeks - and you still lost.

32.) I Won Michigan - LIAR, no you didn't.

33.) I won Nevada - LIAR, no you did not.

34.) I Want All Votes To Count - LIAR, you said let the delegates decide.

35.) I Want Americans To Decide - LIAR, you prefer caucuses that limit the vote, confuse the voters, force a public vote, and only operate during small windows of time.

36.) I passed 900 Bills in the State Senate - LIAR, you passed 26, most of which you didn't write yourself.

37.) My Campaign Was Extorted By A Friend - LIAR, that friend is threatening to sue if you do not stop saying this. Obama has stopped saying this.

38.) I Believe In Fairness, Not Tactics - LIAR, you used tactics to eliminate Alice Palmer from running against you.

39.) I Don't Take PAC Money - LIAR, you take loads of it.

40.) I don't Have Lobbysists - LIAR, you have over 47 lobbyists, and counting.

41.) My Campaign Had Nothing To Do With The 1984 Ad - LIAR, your own campaign worker made the ad on his Apple in one afternoon.

42.) My Campaign Never Took Over MySpace - LIAR, Tom, who started MySpace issued a warning about this advertising to MySpace clients.

43.) I Inspire People With My Words - LIAR, you inspire people with other people's words.

44.) I Have Passed Bills In The U.S. Senate - LIAR, you have passed A BILL in the U.S. Senate - for Africa, which shows YOUR priorities.

45.) I Have Always Been Against Iraq - LIAR, you weren't in office to vote against it AND you have voted to fund it every single time, unlike Kucinich, who seems to be out gutting you Obama. You also seem to be stepping back from your departure date - AGAIN.

46.) I Have Always Supported Universal Health Care - LIAR, your plan leaves us all to pay the 15,000,000 who don't have to buy it.

47.) I Only Found Out About My Investment Conflicts Via Mail - LIAR, both companies you site as having sent you letters about this conflict have no record of any such letter ever being created or sent.

48.) I Am As Patriotic As Anyone - LIAR, you won't wear a flag pin and you don't put your hand over your heart during the Anthem.

49.) My Wife Didn't Mean What She Said About Pride In Country - LIAR, your wife's words follow lock-step in the vein of Wright and Farrahkan, in relation to their contempt and hatred of America.

50.) Wal-Mart Is A Company I Wouldn't Support - LIAR, your wife has received nearly a quater of a million dollars through Treehouse, which is connected to Wal-Mart.

51.) Treehouse Is A Small Company - LIAR, the CEO of Treehouse last year, made more than the CEO of Wal-Mart, according to public records.

52.) University Of Chicago Hospital Pay Is Fair - LIAR, your wife's pay raise was nearly 150% her already bloated rate and the hospital is a Non-Profit Hospital, which made $100,000,000 in the last 3 years. They overcharge blacks VS whites for services, and overcharge everyone in general by 538%!

53.)I Barely Know Rezko - Only 5 Billed Hours - LIAR, you have known him for 17 years, and decided to do a real estate deal with him during a time when he was proven to be under investigation. Despite this, you divided your property and had them take off $300K before the mortgage problems started. Then Rezko's wife buys the lot beside it that you can't afford, saving you $625,000.

54.) My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly - LIAR, you only gave back Hsu ($72K) and Rezko (first $66K, then when caught lying $86K, then when caught lying again $150K and now caught lying YET AGAIN OBAMA, it's $250k) their money when publically called on their involvement in your campaigns.

55.) My Church Is Like Any Other Christian Church - LIAR, your church is so extreme, the pastor who married you, Rev. Wright, just got done blaming the US for 9/11 and named Louis Farrahkan their person of the year.

56.) I Disagree With My Church All The Time - LIAR, you still have yet to repudiate Wright, who married you and your wife, and you still donate large sums of money to assist the church in furthering its message - hatred and revenge. You donated in 2006 alone, $22,500 to the church that you so terribly disagree with. That is nearly $500 PER WEEK - that sure is disagreement, Senator Obama.

57.) I Have Clean Connections Despite Rezko - LIAR, you are not only connected to Exelon and Rezko, you are also connected to Hillary PAC supporter Mr. Hsu, AND an Iraqi Billionaire of ill repute, Nadhmi Auchi, who ripped off people in the Food For Oil, Iraqi deal. Seems Mr. Auchi may have helped Obama buy his million dollar property long before Obama had millions of dollars. Wonder what favors Mr. Auchi expects, when Obama leaves Iraq free to be taken over by special interests such as him.

58.) I never heard sermons like Rev. Wright's, that have been in videos all day, You Tube - LIAR! 3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS speech you said "Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did."

59.) The Passport Invasion is a conspiracy to find dirt on me! - LIAR. Your own Campaign Foreign Policy Advisor is the CEO of the company that looked into your records. PS - You had them look into yours to hide the fact you looked into Clinton's and McCain's more than a year before!

60.) Rev. Meeks has nothing to do with my campaigning - LIAR. Rev. Meeks appeared in ads for your Senate Campaign, donated to you, and helped raise money, then AND NOW. PS - He also seems to despise America.

61.) My wife didn't mean America is ignorant, she was just using a phrase - LIAR. Again, MicHELLe's comments perfectly sync with Wright's, Meeks', and Farrakhans, both in language, anger, and direction.

62.) I am very Anti-Terror - LIAR. [03/30/2008] One of your good pals is long time radical and terrorist William Ayers, with whom you have been seen in the last 12 months and who has helped the now jailed khalidi, Professor at Columbia who invited Ahmadinejad to
