Obama said last night he believes women that become pregnant is punishment from God due to"promiscuity" (Obama's own words). Is this why he has so much "bitterness" towards his white mother who became pregnant before she married his African father? Obama has called his mother "wreckless" and atheist in the book he authored. Again, he called her a a non-religion believer (atheist) last night at the Compassion Forum. Or is he just a racist when it comes to his own white family roots?

However, can Obama relate to the blue collar worker in this nation? His wealthy white grandparents fully supported his family financially send him to private school, boarding school and Harvard. Obama never had to pay student loans back like the regular blue collar worker. Nevertheless, in Obama's infamous speech about "race" he let the whole nation know that his mother was a racist. This is how he shows his gratitude towards his white grandmother? And why does not ever show his white mother in public. Is he embarassed that she is white. He is such a selfish and ungrateful grandson!

Furthermore, his mother married her second husband immediately after she left Obama's father. Therefore, she was not single for too long as Obama claims. In addition, Obama's mother died when he was about 34 and not a child as he often implies in speeches.

While it is true that Obama's mother and African father were on welfare; they also received full financial support from his white grandparents. Otherwise how would you explain the fancy private schools and boarding schools Obama attended that would have cost thousands of dollars which she could have not afford while receiving welfare and unemployed.

I heard the entire transcript and it is what it is. This is not a misunderstanding and the words chosen by Obama, "bitter" and "cling" are not distorted. What he should be doing is apoligizing to the voters in Pennsylvania and own up to his own idiocracity. Do not attempt to blame this again on Hillary and McCain. Start putting the Blame wher it belongs on Mr Obama himself!!

That quote is good. It expresses my opinion of how Obama acts very nicely. I think a more concise quote would be: "Obama is arrogant, condescending, and elitist."

Last Sunday evening I attended the San Francisco fundraiser that has been the center of recent political jousting. The next day, when asked about the talk Obama delivered, I too commented about his answer to a question he was asked about Pennsylvania. Over the past week, though, I have had a Rashomon-like experience concerning those remarks.
Clinton, McCain, and media pundits have parsed a blogger's audio tape of Obama's remarks and criticized a sentence or two characterizing some parts of Pennsylvania and the attitudes of some Pennsylvanians. In context and in person, Senator Obama's remarks about Pennsylvania voters left an impression diametrically opposed to that being trumpeted by his competitor's campaigns.
At the end of Obama's remarks standing between two rooms of guests -- the fourth appearance in California after traveling earlier in the day from Montana -- a questioner asked, "some of us are going to Pennsylvania to campaign for you. What should we be telling the voters we encounter?"
Obama's response to the questioner was that there are many, many different sections in Pennsylvania comprised of a range of racial, geographic, class, and economic groupings from Appalachia to Philadelphia. So there was not one thing to say to such diverse constituencies in Pennsylvania. But having said that, Obama went on say that his campaign staff in Pennsylvania could provide the questioner (an imminent Pennsylvania volunteer) with all the talking points he needed. But Obama cautioned that such talking points were really not what should be stressed with Pennsylvania voters.
Instead he urged the volunteer to tell Pennsylvania voters he encountered that Obama's campaign is about something more than programs and talking points. It was at this point that Obama began to talk about addressing the bitter feelings that many in some rural communities in Pennsylvania have about being brushed aside in the wake of the global economy. Senator Obama appeared to theorize, perhaps improvidently given the coverage this week, that some of the people in those communities take refuge in political concerns about guns, religion and immigration. But what has not so far been reported is that those statements preceded and were joined with additional observations that black youth in urban areas are told they are no longer "relevant" in the global economy and, feeling marginalized, they engage in destructive behavior. Unlike the week's commentators who have seized upon the remarks about "bitter feelings" in some depressed communities in Pennsylvania, I gleaned a different meaning from the entire answer.
First, I noted immediately how dismissive his answer had been about "talking points" and ten point programs and how he used the question to urge the future volunteer to put forward a larger message central to his campaign. That pivot, I thought, was remarkable and unique. Rather than his seizing the opportunity to recite stump-worn talking points at that time to the audience -- as I believe Senator Clinton, Senator McCain and most other more conventional (or more disciplined) politicians at such an appearance might do -- Senator Obama took a different political course in that moment, one that symbolizes important differences about his candidacy.
The response that followed sounded unscripted, in the moment, as if he were really trying to answer a question with intelligent conversation that explained more about what was going on in the Pennsylvania communities than what was germane to his political agenda. I had never heard him or any politician ever give such insightful, analytical responses. The statements were neither didactic nor contrived to convince. They were simply hypotheses (not unlike the kind made by de Tocqueville three centuries ago ) offered by an observer familiar with American communities. And that kind of thoughtfulness was quite unexpected in the middle of a political event. In my view, the way he answered the question was more important than the sociological accuracy or the cause and effect hypotheses contained in the answer. It was a moment of authenticity demonstrating informed intelligence, and the speaker's desire to have the audience join him in a deeper understanding of American politics.
There has been little or no reaction to the part of the answer that was addressed to the hopelessness of inner city youth who have been rendered "irrelevant" to the global economy. No one has seized upon those words as "talking down" to the inner city youth whose plight he was addressing. If extracted from an audio tape HuffPost Blogger Fowler, those remarks could (and may yet) be taken out of context as "Obama excuses alienation and violence by urban youth." But in context, Senator Obama's response sounded like empathetic conclusions and opinions of a keen observer: more like Margaret Mead than Machiavelli.
As the week's firestorm evolved over these remarks at which I was an accidental observer, I have reflected upon the regrettable irony that has emerged from Senator Obama's response to a friendly question: no good effort at intelligent analysis, candor -- and what I heard as an attempt to convey a profound understanding of both what people feel and why they feel it - goes unpunished. Such insights by a political candidate might otherwise be valued. In a national campaign subject to opposition research, his analytical musing has instead created an immense amount of political flak.
Now and "in this time," to invoke one of the candidate's favorite riffs, such observations and remarks shared among supporters are just a push of a record button on a tape recorder away from being spread across the internet to be dissected by political nabobs. What struck me immediately after the fundraiser as so refreshing turned out to be a moment Senator Obama is forced to regret. Today we marvel at de Tocqueville insights about American communities. Apparently, such commentary is valued as long as it is three centuries old and doesn't come from the mouth of a contemporary observer who might be elected president.
So much for the political ironies. But there is one more personal observation that was missed.
I happened to be on the balcony when Senator Obama's vehicles arrived and he emerged from the Secret Service SUV. Obama shouted the friendly greeting "How are you guys up there doing?" to the group of us looking down from the balcony and then said, "You have to excuse me, I need to call my kids in Chicago now." All of us stood and watched the leading candidate for the Democratic party nomination for president have a short conversation with his kids before he entered a fundraiser to make his remarks.
No tape of that conversation has emerged as yet. Who knows how casual remarks of a father to his children or his wife on a cell phone could be spun to support the argument that as a father speaking to his kids two time zones away before they go to bed, his comments sounded as if he "looked down" upon them. Given his relative height and the age of his kids, he probably does. But that would be precisely as relevant to his capacity to unite and lead this country as were the remarks at the fundraiser that have been so deconstructed over this past week.

Irony: the bitter candidate accuses the optimistic candidate about using the word bitter.

The are sound reasons to vote for Obama. Better executive skills as his leadership of his 250 million dollar campaign shows. Inspires the electorate with his vision about the future. Attracts both Jewish Americans and Palestinian Americans, one example of his ability to relate to divergent viewpoints. He is a man who engenders trust.

We need a brighter future and not the bitterness that Clinton engenders. It is only with honest optimism that we can move this country in the right direction.

After living through the last two decades of lying politicians, broken promises and wasted lives and money fighting a war that shouldn't have been started in the first place, yes, I am angry, frustrated and B-I-T-T-E-R ! Damn right us folks in WV are bitter! We have watched the rich get richer and the poor get poorer for decades. We see our neighbors and sons who volunteer for our Armed services sent off to fight (and die) in Iraq for a huge blunder. We see criminals getting off scott-free because our Troopers who serve in the Guard are not here to testify.

We've seen what few manufacturing industries we had left recently close their doors and our friends out of jobs. We see theft, break-ins, drug use and other crimes going thru the roof with tough economic times. We see our grandparents unable to afford their food, medicines and propoerty taxes.

Damn right I am clinging to my guns! The gov't has utterly failed to address our most pressing needs and if the powers cannot protect us, we retain the right to protect ourselves. "It is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish [a failed gov't], and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." Our Troopers may be off in Iraq with the Guard, but I dare you to try to come into my house, threaten me or mine, try to steal my TV and take it to the pawn shop. You'll be looking into the business end of my Smith and Wesson! Our Troopers may not be here to protect us in desperate time when desperate people are taking desperate measure, so we will protect ourselves and cling to our guns!

I am continuously amazed at the Obama supporters who can't admit anything their candidate does is wrong.

Hillary Clinton has made many mistakes and the press is happy to jump on them and accuse of everything they can think of.

But when Obama makes a beauty like linking the bitterness over not having a job to "Clinging to Religion and Guns" and when he said he doesn't want his daughters "punished with a baby" for their possible wrong behavious" he is clearly talking like an elitist. The latte crowd that is Obama's base do think like this. I have sat in coffee shops over the weekend in DC and heard people say oh yeah- Obama is so right on! But even Obama realized how insulting and condescending what he said was to small town and rural folks who don't see the connection of their love of guns and adherence to their faith as a result of any bitterness.

What Obama has done is make himself into John Kerry and Al Gore, Kerry with his wind surfing and Gore having grown up in a Hotel in DC- with these statements and McCain will use them throughout the fall election.

If anyone thinks that Hillary's mild rebuke of Obama is bad wait for the first Republican commercial. And what Obama supporters need to understand is that from Rev. Wright, to Michelle Obama saying she wasn't proud until now to be an American, to Obama's not wearing an American Flag lapel pin to Rev. Meeks and now this - will seem like water torture when the Republican's finish with him.

The idea for Democrats in November is to win. Attacking the Clinton's for understanding how to try to win is self defeating. They have proved they know how to do it. Twice on the Presidential trail and twice in New York including very Republican Upstate NY.

I will support either Clinton or Obama in November, but don't attack the Clintons for what Obama said. He is shooting himself in the foot- the Clintons are only pointing out the wounds and the Republicans surely don't need the Clintons to do that for them- it is the Super Delegates who need to understand how much damage Obama is doing to himself.

The belittling of small town people by sen. Obama is intentional and inexcusable, even he admitted it as misspoken. This is a reflection of the fact, in spite of the large campaign money, delegates and supports from the Kennedys, he did not do well in winning small town America in previous primaries. The weakness of Sen. Obama in understanding and winning small town America will result in major failure in the general election (if he is nominee) as his supporter John Kerry did in 2004.

SCRANTON, Pa. -- For the third straight day, Sen. Hillary Clinton hammered Sen. Barack Obama over his comments about the frustrations of Americans who live in small towns, this time saying he reinforced negative stereotypes people have about Democrats.

"Since this whole discussion started over Senator Obama's remarks, Democrats have reached out to me to say that we can't afford for people to believe that the Democratic Party is elitist and out of touch," Clinton told reporters in a news conference in Scranton, Pa. She added, "His comments were elitist and divisive and the Democratic Party has been unfortunately viewed by many people over the last decade as being elitist and out of touch."

A familiar pattern is at work here. Hillary asserts -- her assertion of her superior "experience" is an earlier example. Then she reasserts ad nauseum. In this instance the "fact" evidently to be firmly established in the public's mind is that Democrats are elitist and out of touch.

At least this is the likely outcome of her reassertions.

Mr. Obama's quote--made to a group of wealthy San Francisco donors in response to a question about why he was behind in the polls in Pennsylvania--reinforces stereotypes. The tone of his entire response is condescending and offensive--not simply the final two sentences. In his response (which can be heard at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fowler/obama-no-surprise-that-ha_b_96188.html), Senator Obama again raises the race card and suggests that the people of Pennsylvania don't respond to his message because it's brought to them by a black man. The audience begins laughing and as the laughter continues, he adds more disparaging comments about small town Americans.

Rather than taking a positive approach about his campaign strategies, Mr. Obama grouped together all people who prefer another candidate as bitter, ignorant and cynical. He played to possible biases that his wealthy San Francisco donors might have about the working class. The fact that informed voters may be making an educated decision to vote for HRC is lost on him and makes him seem arrogant and out of touch. There is no excuse for any politician to tap into stereotypes or to make disparaging statements about poor, rural, white America. Senator Obama's words were extremely divisive and do not reflect the attitude of someone who could unite our country.

Come on folks. Obama is elitist and condescending. Does anyone doubt that? Kerry looked pretty good and polished in the primaries and the Rebublicans slammed him in the general for the same type of stuff. The same thing is going to happen. Obama has a nice strong base for winning in the primaries. Virtually 100% of the African-American vote and a bunch of Latte Drinking-Anti-War-Liberals. He has a big disconnect with blue-collar democrats, Hispanics, and older voters. Those disconnects will be amplified in the general election. It is about time he recognizes the weakness and does something that would also heal the division in the party: name Hillary his vice president and give her health care. That would require cajones which I have seen no evidence of.

Some people are simplying pretending that they don't understand what Obama meant. They simply choose to be insincere in order to score some points.

His words are in line with the saying "A hungry man is an angry man". Of course, in difficult times people become frustrated and oppose even things they would ordinarily tolerate if they were better off economically. They become more religious even though they 've always been going to church.

This statement clearly doesn't mean that Obama is elitist, out of touch or looking down on people. Ironically, the reverse is the case. It shows that he really understands people's psychology and behavior meaning that he is in touch and understands them.

He has just stated what everybody has known for ages. His problem is just that he happens not to be a regular washington politician and therefore, do not understand that not every truth is good to say in politics in order to win (not in a presidential campaign)

Oh yeah the real issue here is offending the "poor" people here in this country. Let's not talk about how the war in Iraq has ruined our economy (let alone of how the Taliban defeated the USSR, a super power at the time, with prolonged war crippling their economy. I am sure that is their model for us) and quite frankly ruined our reputation around the world for moral high ground. Use your God given intellect and see between the lines and do something for yourself instead of being mainpulated.

What does Hillary and McCain have in common besides they're drinking buddies? They are both wealthy out of touch. Obama is the only person in the race (along with Ron Paul) who still remembers what it's like to be a regualar person. Barack, is far from perfect, but he is by far the best of the three remaining viable candidates. Unlike John McCain and Hillary who supported the unnecessary war in Iraq, he has consistently opposed the war. Unlike John McCain whose health care "plan," will help very few people or Hillary's plan, whose details have not been explained, that will probably force millions of Americans to buy health care coverage they can not afford, Barack's health care plan is a very good, realistic first step toward eventual universal health care coverage, which is not an unfair financial burden upon Americans.

John McCain has flip flopped on the important issue of taxes. The Clintons have a history of not being trustworthy, as polls reflect. Barack has more integrity than the Clintons and cares more about helping ordinary Americans, whereas the Clintons care mostly about power, themselves, as well as trying to bolster their legacy among future historians.

Okay, I admit that I'm dumb.

I read the offending words and heard the audio and I still don't know why I should be upset with Obama's comments. I thought he was giving a matter of fact answer to a question. But then again, what do I know. I'm not paid to be a spin dioctor.

What I find ironic is that the main person who accused Senator Obama of being out of touch and an elitist was none other than our gal Hillary.

This is the same Hillary who some say might be the one out of touch since she has lived in some form of tax payer supported public housing since 1982. First there was the Governor's mansion in Arkansas from 1982 to 1992; then the White House from 1993 to 2001; and then the million dollar plus home in New York and her million dollar plus home in Washington DC on a Senator's salary.

I wonder if one could also say that Hillary might have been a tad of an elitist herself these last 7 years because she had an income of $110 million. I don't know how many small towns in in mid-America view that type of an income as average.

It could have been that maybe Hillary had a tad bit of an elitist advantage herself while growing up in a family that could afford a summer cottage on a lake in a state different from the one in which they were living. I don't know how many families in small town American can afford that luxury today.

Is it possible that Hillary might have been a bit out of touch in viewing the real problems facing the children of middle class America as they try to make it in today's job market. After all, how many families in mid-America can use their family name to help their daughter land a $200,000 a year job in NYC. Or does Hillary believe everyone can do that?

Could Hillary be so out of touch that she fails to understand the real fear of crime that middle America feels. After all, 24/7 Secret Service protection can ease a lot of concerns and fears.

There are many in middle America who could have said all of this and much more. And with luck the Obama campaign will speak for them and will point out these facts over and over again during the next nine days or for however long it takes. Maybe then Hillary will finally understand what Senator Obama meant by "bitter."

Leon I forgot to add. We really don't know what we are getting with Obama but we do know what we are getting with Clinton. I can't speak for anyone else but myself, but I see the status quo tearing this country apart. That is why I am giving Obama my vote.

Don't get too lost in the Hilary versus Obama squabbles in this section. The real issue is the Washington Post's selection of articles. The bias towards Hilary Clinton is so offensive that I must state my objections here, but their are directed most pointedly to the Washington Post itself.

Why does the Post consistently give Hilary Clinton front page news and attention for her constant attacks against Barack Obama? This is a choice that the Post has made, and it is slanting the nomination process towards Hilary Clinton in a way that her baseless attacks on their own merits could not achieve. Who wants to elect someone who behaves like Hilary Clinton? She wants to be excused for repeatedly concocting fake stories for her Bosnia landing, but she attacks Obama incessantly for one poorly chosen word. Now she's packing a gun, what has the democratic party come to? With democrats like the Clintons, who needs republicans?

The weighting of the Washington Post's forum for Hilary's attacks amounts to disguised editorializing on Hilary Clinton's behalf, and it is of more value to address the Post to cease such bias than to weigh in against the Clinton campaign tactics here.

4)It is TRUE that many people were hurt by NAFTA, but let us not forget the NEwt Gingriches who were running COngress and the Senate.

It is also true that the US saw MORE domestic in vestment under the Clintons, an increase of real income across all working segments, job growth, and real returns in the stock market.

I think Obama has a lot to offer, but what he said WAS exactly the sort of thing that Democrats have been guilty of saying,. I frequently vote Democrat, but I am also all too aware that illegal immigrants most certainly HAVE had a harsh impact on everything from skilled trades on down.

The fact is, without illegal immigrants, those whose jobs were outsorouced would have been able to turn tot he construction jobs with their skills, and continue to make a steady living.

People are bitter because they got screwed. They have aright to be bitter.

Sure, I have been bitter about those things too. But that bitterness is not the reason why I believe in God, as Obama was suggesting. I believe in God regardless. On health insurance, his policies are weaker and leave him in a poor place for negotiations.

His Iraq pull-out strategy is far less detailed than her redeployment plan and includes frequent "outs" from what he is saying including leaving in special force units and the potential to reenter Iraq.

His policy for dealing with the foreclosure crisis is a bandaid rather than a solution that allows for the refiguring of the problem.

Congratulations Hillary...we should thank you. Your focus on this issue has actually made Sen Obama more electable. The past use of wedge issues to cover a candidate's ethical and intellectual leadership deficits has become a staple of American politics. Your focus here has brought front and center a key element of Karl Rove's election strategy.

I was a campaign volunteer for John Kerry in SouthWestern PA during the 2004 election. We worked our butts off going door to door and were able to hold onto PA by the skin of our teeth that year. It should have been easy...a no brainer. It was already obvious that President Bush had no plan for Iraq, domestic policy, or any original thought. His answer to Enron and other policy failings was to remind us of 9-1-1. We knew he didnt have a chance. Then at the last moment, Rove's strategy turned the tables on us.

Republicans introduced referendums in 11 of the key battle ground states. They had focused on Gay marriage, abortion, and Flag burning issues in the final days of the Presidential election campaign and managed to add some of those issues to the ballots. Suddenly a vote for John Kerry was a vote for abortion, gun control and having a gay couple move in next door. Rove caught the entire democratic party off guard. We were amazed when we lost Ohio..it took days to sort out our defeat there when we should have won it in a cake walk. It was obvious that the people of Ohio had voted against their own interests. That one election set their state back about 20 years.

The Unions couldn't even deliver my home state of WV. Most democrats there decided to stay home rather than vote for Gay marriage. We even witnessed a respected Democratic Judge with deep roots in our state taken down by a Rove wedge issue. All across the country people focused on wedge issues that defined them...and ultimately awarded George Bush's incompetence with 4 more years during which he has driven our country to bankruptcy and ruin. They did it long after it was known that no WMD's existed, long after ENRON, and long after your average american voter knew that 2000 shouldnt have happened.

You can call it whatever you want, but the bottom line is that today's republicans are going to play the fear card, the race card, the patriotism card, the right to bear arms card, the abortion card and the religion card. Karl Rove is still hanging around.

The only way to defeat his brand of politics, is to speak the truth. We need to have that national conversation on race someday, but in the meantime we need to start being more honest with ourselves and each other....and we have to stop being so afraid of each other..and (and this is where you lose Hillary) we have to start expecting more from our elected leaders again. My goodness, when was the last time we expected honesty from our elected officials?? How is it that our elections more resemble a season of "Survivor" than an actual civil conversation followed by an actually fair contest?? Do the Columbians know something about the "Clinton two for one deal" that we don't?

I'm reminded of the campaign stop George Bush made in Ohio years ago. At a bustling manufacturing plant, in front of boxes of products and to a number of workers, George Bush made a pledge to bring jobs and industry back to the state of Ohio. It was an inspirational, energizing, and timely presentation. The only problem was, it was a damned lie. The boxes were labled "Made In China". In places they couldn't black out the label, they faced the boxes away from the camera. The staged appearance needed extras and "busy work" to simulate a thriving plant.

The entire plant conspired with the Bush campaign to promote the lie that they were not hurting under his policies. They paid for that lie, their state is still paying for that lie. Thats why its so important to each of us, as we move forward in selecting a candidate and eventually a President that we trim away these issues. Are we so afraid of Gays next door and of losing the right to bear arms that we give up our dreams of a free and democratic society? Will we each provide complicit support for our candidate's "little lies" because he or she looks more like us and reminds us of the good old days? Are we so afraid of what could maybe sorta possibly happen between 2:59 a:m and 3:01 a:m, that we accept a "What conflict?"-conflict of interest? One of the hardest lessons that we have learned these past 8 years after being manipulated into war and recession is that one of the central tenants of a truly free and democratic society..is honesty and truth in public service.

An embellished story is about trying to highlight certain information to the extent of exaggeration- really, the Bosnia story is not a big deal.

The "bitter" comment would have killed Hillary- it shows patronization toward people who have a different belief system from Barak.
