During the debate, Obama bungled on tax policy, big time. Period. End of sentence. End of story. To liberals in the media, Get over it. Obama proved he has a very poor grasp of basic economic principles.
First off, you don't raise taxes during a recession. That's a no-brainer. Second, doubling the capital-gains tax rate will affect Americans up and down the income ladder, not just rich hedge-fund managers. In addition, capital-gains tax cuts are self-financing, and they stimulate jobs and the economy. You want to raise budget revenues and spark economic growth? Cut the cap-gains tax rate. That's what history shows.
Another blunder Obama also proposed uncapping the payroll tax, his tax hike on payrolls would actually slam middle-income earners, eliminating that cap Obama will be soaking veteran firemen, cops, teachers, and health-service workers, along with a variety of other occupations. Fact, in America's largest cities, a firefighter married to a school teacher can earn close to $200,000 filing jointly. So not only will each spouse separately pay more for Social Security and health care under Obama's plan, together they'll also be slammed by Obama's cap-gains tax increase.
This is more than just a failure to understand the Laffer curve. It's another cultural misstep by Obama. I can't help but wonder if the senator knows any cops or firemen. His appeal is to well-educated latte liberals. That remark about middle-income folks having turned to God, faith, and guns because of economic setbacks? Not only was it ill-advised, it illustrates the wide cultural chasm that exists between the candidate and the rest of America.
Obama's economics are bad and his social circle is very limited. This is one of the many reasons why a quarter of the Hillary Democrats are telling pollsters they'll likely move to John McCain in the general election.
Obama's real agenda is far-liberal left. It's an ideology that places income redistribution above economic growth. That's his real message. And it's the same one that sunk Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry. Obama is aligning himself with the Democratic losers. And that will make him a loser as well.

African American communities desperately need capital in order to create new businesses and jobs. As Obama takes the capital out of capitalism, all those who are not rich will be hurt when the rich folks with capital have less of it -- after tax -- to invest in those new businesses and new jobs. That's exactly why wealth-redistribution plans always backfire. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is a surefire economic loser. So is putting government in charge of the economy, which is what Mr. Obama is proselytizing.
This marks the third mistake for the Illinois senator. Not only does he not understand economics; not only is he set apart from middle-class values and beliefs; he apparently hasn't read much history either. Did someone say inexperience?

Have you ever grown marigolds or sunflowers, where you start them inside on your window-sills? What happens if it is too warm and too much sun, all at once over a period - they grow too fast, their stems can not keep up with the growth and they tumble over and many will perish... (You can not have growth, growth, growth- you need to let your stem get stable sometimes.)

As to what "caused" the Great Depression, you can not with any assurance point _only_ to the Gold Standard, the way it was run way back then. It comes down to policy and people and the other economic lays of the land at that time. One thing is for sure- a major cause of the Great Depression was debt.

When the people and corporations, whom were greatly in debt back then (with the roaring 20's still fueling them ever forward), experienced price deflation (the opposite of inflation but just as bad), they could not pay-back their loans. Then the banking system started to collapse. And then..

See any similarities to today? We do no have any standard pegging the value of dollar, other than debt. Debt=Money Creation. Thus, without debt (banks willing or even able to loan) we can not see our currency stay stable or see growth. The ins-and-outs are different now, but we are in the same challenges- perhaps even worth, for DEBT is how WE GROW (see the links I posted above- a nice film in the comments section on how this works.)

However the point I want to make is that our USD, what we work for, should be based on solid foundations- not on the foreign owners of OUR Federal Reserve and the banking and Wall Street elite. It should have a cold, hard value. (Even if only 2% backed by gold, or silver or heck, even services, hours, storage space [virtual or otherwise]- give me stability that I know is real.)

How can anybody be supporting Hillary at this point? Can't you see the way she is acting and her dirty politics. You all know Obama is the better choice!

Pleasant,Michigan (home of Central Michigan University)we had our 2008 Michigan Democratic Party 4th Congressional District Convention to elect delegates to the Convention at Denver.At this convention, only people with a paid membership in the state Democratic Party as of February 28 can vote.This district is an amalgam of all of 13 counties plus part of Saginaw county extending northwest from Saginaw to Traverse City at the northwest corner of the state on Lake Michigan. It is mostly white except for possibly Central Michigan University and Saginaw.We had 89 Uncommitted(Obama) and 49 Hillary. We had 4 Blacks from Saginaw(Obama) and 1 Mexican(Hillary). We had exactly one college student and I don't think anyone else was under forty. I think the average age was around sixty years of age. I wish there were a new primary in Michigan. If Hillary can't win this demographic, I don't know where she can win in Michigan. I think she would get a corkscrew landing back in her kitchen were we to have another vote here with just Democratic voters.

"Get over it" -- heck yeah I'm voting for the least corrupt. A matter of degrees is the difference between $5 trillion of new debt directed entirely towards the top one percent; and balanced budgets with the economic benefit directed towards the nation's middle class.

Those degrees of difference are a world of difference.

If voters want the DC lobbyists choice -- there is McBush. On the other side, there is a candidate with almost 1.4 million donors with an average contribution in the $100 range -- with only one quarter of that share coming from max. donors.

A candidate's primary obligation is to the people who fund his or her campaign. If the goal is to have a candidate who gets almost all of his money from special interest lobbies in Washington DC, you can bet that that candidate will cater to those special interest donors when he or she gets elected.

There is a real choice in this election. The candidate fighting for "American" interests broadly defined is NOT John McBush.

But a telling anecdote from her husband's administration shows Hillary Clinton's attitudes about the "lunch-bucket Democrats" are not exactly pristine.

In January 1995, as the Clintons were licking their wounds from the 1994 congressional elections, a debate emerged at a retreat at Camp David. Should the administration make overtures to working class white southerners who had all but forsaken the Democratic Party? The then-first lady took a less than inclusive approach.

The statement -- which author Benjamin Barber witnessed and wrote about in his book, "The Truth of Power: Intellectual Affairs in the Clinton White House" -- was prompted by another speaker raising the difficulties of reaching "Reagan Democrats." It stands in stark contrast to the attitude the New York Democrat has recently taken on the campaign trail, in which she has presented herself as the one candidate who understands the working-class needs.

"I don't think [Obama] really gets it that people are looking for a president who stands up for you and not looks down on you," she said this week.

But those who were at the event say the 1995 episode fits into her larger viewpoint. As Harry Boyte, the director of the University of Minnesota's Center for Democracy and Citizenship who was at the retreat, told The Huffington Post: "[Hillary Clinton] sees herself as the champion of the oppressed, but there is always a kind of good guy versus bad guy mentality. The comment before that was that 'the Reagan Democrats are our enemies and they weren't on our side,' and she was agreeing with that comment. She said we should write them off: screw them."

I would have wanted Obama to respond as forcefully and persistently as he was attacked in the debate, but he (a person well-schooled in Chicago politics) didn't. You could see him agonizing over how negative he could get without going against his own preference for staying above the fray, because damned if he, damned if he didn't.

Tha fact is that there was nothing he had not previously dismissed as baseless or pointless, or has not shown the Clinton flip-flops, say-anything, do-anything-when-convenient Clinton approach.

Hillary has said much worse about the Southern White working class ("Screw 'em") after they went Republican in 1994. THAT was not even brought up-- even to let her confirm/deny a story written in a 2001 book and confirmed by others who heard that remark. Nor was her praise of MoveOn.Org when they served her interest and then blasting them when they staarted supporting Obama. Both stories have been reported by the Huffington Post -- the same source that gave her Obama's "Bitterness" remark which she did exploit.

Now today's NYTimes talks about Clinton surrogates (including Chelsea and others) badgering undecided superdelegates, reminding them what they owed the Clintons. Pretty shabby, in my opinion.

Slowly but surely, the mood in the country (and quite visibly among the superdelegates) seems to be settling that Hillary is too divisive and too casual with facts to be a desirable (or the best) nominee against McCain. The same Republican machine that she tries to scare Obama with would tear into her and her U-turns and flip-flops, perhaps with vengeneance this time after seeing Bill C. slip through their impeachment efforts.

My suggestion to Obama: Be GRATEFUL to Hillary for serving as a stand-in for McCain.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama's. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been OUT MANNED! OUT GUNNED! and OUT SPENT! 4 and 5 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. Obama wants to restore taxes on the rich, retain middle class and lower income tax cuts, save money by leaving Iraq and spend it on improvements such as improved health care and education funding. He wants to re-regulate trade and business transactions for the benefit of ALL Americans and provide relief for homeowners ambushed by the mortgage crisis. McCain just wants to keep things going as they have been - endless war in Iraq, permanent deficit spending and tax cuts for the richest Americans, and no help to middle and low income people. He's a good Republican. That's what they believe in and they have every right to present that to the people. Let the voters decide in November which is the best policy.

During the Wednesday debate, Hillary talked about ordering a "massive retaliation" against Iran if they act in some way against Israel. (And what is our "national interest"?)I HOPE she would do the courtesy of at least going to Congress first to seek a declaration of war! Not too far from McCain's "bombbombbomb Iran" musical hint. A few days ago, she also spoke to a newspaper association gathering about going through the motions of diplomacy before she "escalates" actions against Iran. It sounded like a foregone conclusion--or should I say a "wink wink" to AIPAC? Iran's current president is only in power until 2009--when he may not be re-elected.(There's a lot of internal dissatisfaction with his handling of foreign affairs and the domestic economy in Iran, according to foreign policy expert Barbara Slavin.) What is the point of this Bush-like, war-mongering rhetoric? Are they courting AIPAC contributions? A misguided attempt to secure "the Jewish vote"--not all of which only sees Israel's political right winger's positions? In her speech to the newspaper association, Hillary mentioned her "belief" that Iran was somehow behind a Jewish community center(?) bombing in Brazil years ago--one that Hezbollah of Lebanon may have been involved in. No one knows for sure. Her use of this to support her position reminds me of the cherry-picked, unreliable "evidence" used by Bush/Cheney to get us into the Iraq war. Obama has a much more prudent approach to Iran that gives them a way to negotiate without losing all their national pride.

I like some of Hillary's domestic policies, but I think she would be a disaster on the foreign policy front. (For example, her overly hostile stance with China is almost as bad as that of Bush's with North Korea and Iran.) I also fear that her antagonistic approach on the domestic front will not lead to her "solutions" ever getting implemented. A fighter is good in a boxing ring--but how does that help in a democracy where our institutions are intended to work out compromises?

When McCain antes up the $5 trillion he's dumped on taxpayers children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren over the past 8 years -- plus the $120 billion of bailout money for Keating and his S&L buddies in the 1980s -- then we can start saying that McCain "knows" what's good for the American economy.

Until then McCain works for the 59 federal corporate lobbyists who runs his campaign -- not the American people.

And don't think for a moment that McCain's sell-out of Boeing for French Airbus -- and his campaigns' strong connections to the Airbus supertanker deal -- won't be an election issue in Washington state and Kansas this year either.

Living in PA, we are being bombarded by Obama ads. He has an running that he does not take money from the big oil companies, thus implying that Hillary does. Well as Factcheck.org rightly points out, he cannot take contributions from oil companies, it is illegal and has been for over a hundred years.
Now this is the real Obama, he is trying to manipulate the Bitter vote in his favor by trying to make it look like Hillary does take contributions from the Oil Companies.
The truth of the matter is, he does take money from oil companies, just not directly. Employees of oil companies and their families are allowed to contribute to his campaign, as well as Hillary's and McCain's campaign.
As Factcheck brings to public light, two of Obama's fund raisers are oil/gas executives who have raised between $50,000-$100,000 each as well as donations from employees of oil/gas companies totaling around $230,000.
This is a great ploy on his part with the recent hikes in gas prices. In North Eastern PA where I live gas is almost $3.50/g and estimates are $4-$5/g by end of summer.
Is this the Change Obama wants to bring to us? He keeps talking about change, well, his dirty politics, lies and all around assuming American voters are dumb, is not change, we have seen this politics for years.

"The Clinton smear mailer further charges that Obama "voted for Dick Cheney's energy bill that gives huge tax breaks to oil companies." Obama did vote for the 2005 energy bill to which Clinton refers. But as we've said more than once before, her claim that the legislation resulted in large tax breaks for the oil industry is misleading.

In fact, the bill President Bush signed into law in 2005 actually raised taxes on the oil industry overall. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service said that the Energy Policy Act "included several oil and gas tax incentives, providing about $2.6 billion of tax cuts for the oil and gas industry. In addition, [the act] provided for $2.9 billion of tax increases on the oil and gas industry, for a net tax increase on the industry of nearly $300 million over 11 years."

The fear of Liquid Natural Gas facilities to be bult in Oregon expressed by the Oregon reader is fine, but the energy bill does nothing to promote them. It just makes the Federal government responsible for the process by saying FERC will have jurisdiction. If an individual state does not want a facility, there is no way that it can be built there. Paranoia is alive and well. By the way, Hillary voted for the original bill which included the FERC provision before she voted against it because some of her pork barrel items for New York were not included.
