Early Exit Polls Reflect Negative Campaign
By Jennifer Agiesta and Jon Cohen
Pennsylvania's Democratic primary voters said the economy was the top issue guiding their vote today, according to early network exit polls. And nearly nine in 10 said the nation is in a moderate or serious recession.
Change was again the top attribute among Democratic voters in the Keystone State, as it has been in each of the 31 states where voters have already weighed in as they exited polling places. About half said the ability to shake up Washington was the top quality they were looking for in a candidate. A quarter focused on a candidate's experience, about one in eight on empathy and one in 10 on electability.
There has been fierce competition for Pennsylvania voters, and about two-thirds said Hillary Clinton has unfairly attacked Barack Obama. Nearly half said Obama has gone after Clinton unfairly. That's the most to say the candidates are unjustly attacking one another since the Florida primary in late January.
In terms of the demographics of today's voters, Pennsylvania's electorate appears to be an amalgam of two of its neighboring states. From a socioeconomic perspective, the state closely resembles Ohio to the west, which Clinton won by 10 points. But when it comes to partisanship and ideological make-up, the state's Democratic voters are more in line with those in Maryland to the south, where Obama won by 23 points. Both Pennsylvania and Maryland limit primary elections to party members. About two in 10 voters in Pennsylvania are union members; about the same as in Ohio and Maryland.
The Keystone State's Democratic voters are slightly older than those in either of these neighboring states; in the preliminary exit poll data voters age 65 and over make up nearly three in 10 of all Pennsylvania voters. And about one in seven are African American. Both groups are worth watching as the night unfolds.
Overall, more than half called the nation's economy their top voting issue, about double the number focused on the war in Iraq.

This whole election cycle reminds me of the last two (Clinton/Obama vs McCain, Bush vs Kerrey, Bush vs Gore). What a bunch of losers, with the possible exception of Obama who's still an unknown. It's embarrassing that we can't find more qualified candidates for one of the most important executive positions in the world. Heck, none of the three remaining candidates have ANY substantive executive experience to speak of. Seems like we should have a set of minimum requirements for the position, other than just age and US citizenship. A track record of real and successful executive experience would be great. Real military experience would be handy for the Commander-in-Chief. (The anti-military crowd should remember that the military advised against invading Iraq and views ANY war as a failure of diplomacy and intel.) And a certain "presence" would be nice, unlike the national embarrassment currently mishandling the country.

Wow... reading reader comments makes me despair for maturity.
I'm thinking this will be a tough night for Obama, but there's really no denying that he's got the nomination wrapped up. When you really dig into the math, there's no way she's going to take the lead in pledged delegates, and there's *absolutely* no way the superdelegates are going to overturn the will of the people. Obama has a solid lead in popular votes, delegates and number of states won.
As for matching up against McCain, there's no denying that Obama has brought out more first-time voters than anyone could have imagined. He's motivating a chunk of the electorate that never cared, or dare I say "hoped" before. That's exciting for the whole idea of democracy, not just for Obama and me (as an Obama supporter).
There's a whole lot to celebrate this year, and I can't wait to get to the celebrating.
Keep the faith, people, and thanks for caring about this stuff enough to read and write about it. Just take it easy with the ranting and the all caps, huh? ;-)

My God people. Why are we still here? In response to Jamie's early post, I would suggest that she cast her vote and move on. Posting here isn't convincing anyone-- NO ONE is undecided anymore. Worse, it encourages the media to drag this thing out longer.
Let's demand that the media talk about real issues. In the end, what we really want are good solutions to the crises that we face. Look, all the typing in the world ain't going to change my vote for Obama or anyone elses for Clinton. However, I for one am still open to new ideas on how to fix our broken energy policy. Somewhere in this election cycle, we got so focused on the candidates that we forgot the issues!
If you agree with this post. Please end your post with the phrase "MORE ARTICLES ON REAL ISSUES." We can send a message to the WashingtonPost that we really care about solutions and frank discussion on REAL problems.

Barack has sealed the deal and unfortunately Hillary is still inhaling the smoke that Bill did not inhale. The Clinton's and their sense of entitlement to our White House is tedious and nauseating but hey who expected better from these two. Barack Obama has trounced her in more states, more delegates, and more votes. On top of besting her in those three areas he has put together the best fund raiding machine ever in the history of our country and from the regular folks donating a hundred here and a hundred there. No PAC money not even a dime and he has used the money wisely. Hillary has blown through her over 100 million and is now in debt by over ten(10) million. She cannot tap any more of the big spender $23000 dollar donators and will be forced to tap into her hubbies influence peddling 109 Million. Bill will probably not willingly contribute the big bucks to her failed campaign...
I have two family members in Iraq and we want them back home now and we want someone who can rally solutions to the problems facing America.

Haven't we spent at least part of the last 8 years being deluded? It's time to ask the real questions (and have them answered, and I mean honestly answered).
-------------------------------------------
In answer to your question: (1) Clinton does not have the popular vote. Going into tonight's primary in Pennsylvania, Senator Obama leads by 700,000 votes. (2) Small donors who give an average of $100 are Obama's source of money. The motive is clear. They think he is the candidate most likely to bring about a change in the politics of Washington.
Posted by: lhummer Littleton, CO | April 22, 2008 8:04 PM
To Susan Powers:
I don't know why you think Clinton has won the popular vote. If you look at MSNBC you will see the figures for the popular vote so far: 13,402,903 for Obama vs. 12,705,360 for Clinton.
As for Obama's money-raising, he has more donations from small donors than any other candidate. Obama has used the power of the Internet, including Facebook and other networking sites, to generate thousands of donations from younger voters and people who have never before become involved in a campaign.
Check it out -- there is nothing sinister or underhanded about the way he is raising money. It's right there for all to see on his Web site and on the Federal Election Commission Web site.

Posted by: mikeysfbay | April 22, 2008 7:56 PM
Dear Susan Powers... you are delusional. it is Obama who leads in the popular vote by 700,000. The reason Obama is better at getting campaign donations is because his organization is far superior than that of Hillary.
If Hillary wins this nomiation, she will be at par with McCain at raising money.
Posted by: | April 22, 2008 7:55 PM
Who the hell is Hillary Clinton. I know the "role" of Hillary Clinton is played by the woman who was married to former President but she keeps on getting her lines wrong an telling contradicting stories that I've no idea who she is anymore apart from someone who appears to be deranged and barely able to stick to the plot.
As for the ranting Clinton supporters who are apparently as delusional and downright BITTER as Hillary herself, take a deep breath, look at the statistics. Yes, Hillary can win this nomination by a lot of hard work and a lot of game playing in the party BUT she is the most loathe politician after Bush and she can never be President. It hurts to be wrong, but don't live in Denial like the Clinton's and Bushes of this world (they are increasingly alike) face facts and treat the subject a little less angry perhaps?

I love the right, they red-bait anyone to the left of John Birch. Anyone who thinks the government ought to work for the people, like after Katrina, is a "Marxist". What a load of flapdoodle. The nation saw just who are the elitists, the party that sends our men and women to war in inadequate gear, the party that thought the dismal effort to help the citizens of New Orleans was a heckuva job. We're tired of your contempt.
Eight years ago you and your kind were in South Carolina smearing John McCain, now he's your boy. I don't who is the most pathetic, you for doing it or McCain for cozying back up to you.

OBAMA has won the nomination period and the rest is just like two a day football practices getting our man ready for the battles against Mc Cain. Hillary has the highest negative ratings of all time in recorded history. Baracks famiy will nto defame the White House ala Clintons and will turn the page forward not back to the same old same old. Iraq is the numero uno issue in the Bento household and we want the candidate who did not vote for it just to look tough and then lied about ducking to sniper fire while really getting a flower and a poem from a young girl. GO Barack GO we back you 100%.

Jamie 29 what primary have you been watching? Hillary doesn't lie, stretch the truth, go negative (of course along with Bill), exaggerate her experiences (first lady for 8 years with no security clearance, Bosnia, NAFTA, her failed healtcare plan,Columbia free trade, Mark Penn, Peace talks with Ireland,Bill on Columbia, hiding where the money came from for the Clinton library(most likely lobbyists, mis-speaking, too tired at 11pm per her husband but can answer that 3am phone call, now threatens nuclear war with Iran but doesn't believe George Bush was right to go to war with Iraq, when Obama loses a state primary he congratulates Clinton on her win that very night she always forgets to congratulate him when he wins so poor sportmanship on top of that and she critcizes him on not wearing a flaf pin haven't seen her wear one. So where have you been living these last few months certainly not where everyone else has been living. And by the way to vote a woman president because she is a woman is the most stupid reason to vote it's about as stupid as voting for her because it's her turn or she feels obligated to have this. this isn't a game this is real life. Grow up Jamie 29 stop acting like Hillary a spoiled brat who feels deserved.

I assume, as Philadelphia-born-and-raised and a former Pittsburgh resident, that they will close at 9 at the earliest, and are likely to stay open longer if the turnout is really high.

A 29 year old, single white female from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
HILLARY HAS MY VOTE AT THE POLLS!! HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT IN 2008!!
please, Obama whined the minute that big media began to get over their "love affair" with him... he didn't like the questions asked (Obama) as opposed to (getting the very first question every time so that Obama can parrot back something similar that Clinton just said)she had a right to complain about that, anyone who's ever been in a debate knows the pitfalls of getting the first question, time for your opponent to formulate one himself. He has no plans and I think you'd all be very lucky to even name one and with such ambiguous and vague talk/answers...NO...I don't think I'd want him answering the phone at 3:00pm..much less 3:00am...lest he's awake enough to whine about the "problem" he's encountering on the phone. NEGATIVE ADS??!!??? PLEASE, YOU GUYS IN "BIG MEDIA" NEED TO GET OFF OF OBAMA'S MICRO-GENITALIA LONG ENOUGH TO STOP TRYING TO RAM THIS GUY DOWN OUR THROATS! SHE'S NEVER PROPOSED ANYTHING EVEN REMOTELY NEGATIVE "ABOUT HIM"!!! EVEN THOUGH YOU ALL TRY TO PUT THE SPIN ON LIKE SHE DID...HAS SHE ACCUSED HIM OF TAKING BRIBES? OR HAVING SOME CHILDREN OUT OF WEDLOCK? OR AN AFFAIR? NOOOO! BESIDES, JUST BECAUSE YOUR BOY GOT BEAT BY A WOMAN, THAN IT MUST BE BECAUSE SHE FOUGHT, "DIRTY"! BESIDES, I think it's some valid points that she's proposed in all of her ads, Bin Laden, nuclear war, an economic depression, they're all possibilites he might encounter as president, the bottom line is this...WE ALL KNOW NOW THAT SHE'S TOUGH AS HELL, BUT WHEN THE GOING GOT TOUGH, OBAMA JUST...GOT GOING! By the way, does anyone else out there know of any real, actual plans that Obama even has for our country? Is there anyone out there who can actually tell me even one? It sure sounds like I might have touched a nerve with "Obamaqueins" out there...HILLARY CLINTON FOR PRESIDENT!

"They're both Marxist"
It's amazing how few people know what Marxism is. For most folks on the right, it's synonymous with "left of me," i.e., most of the country.
