Dan Balz's Take

For Obama, Wright the Latest in a Long Line of Tests

Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright addresses a breakfast gathering at the National Press Club in Washington, April 28, 2008. (Associated Press)

By Dan Balz
The testing of Barack Obama continues. The Illinois senator has been on a month-long slide of bad news, poor performances and self-inflicted wounds. Still the favorite to win the Democratic nomination, Obama nonetheless needs a pair of victories next week in Indiana and North Carolina to kick-start his candidacy.

The last thing Obama should want is to back into the nomination. He can do that by winning those states where the demographics favor him -- North Carolina and Oregon, for example -- and by playing the numbers game in the other states by assuming a respectable showing will prevent Hillary Clinton from overtaking him in the battle for pledged delegates.

The math has favored him since the end of February, when he ran off 11 straight victories and built a lead in pledged delegates that, because of the Democratic rules, make it virtually impossible for Clinton to overcome. At that point, Obama was more than ready for the race to end.

His description of the race in late February offered an insight into his own thinking. The Democratic campaign, he said, was like a great movie that had gone on about half an hour too long. It was clear even before Ohio and Texas that he was mentally ready to turn the page, to begin thinking about a general election race, to put combat with Clinton behind him.

Since then there has been little but trouble for Obama. He narrowly lost the popular vote in Texas, lost the Ohio primary decisively and then easily won Mississippi. Then came the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's "bitter" comments, a grueling debate in Philadelphia and a loss in Pennsylvania. March and April undid some of what January and February instilled in his candidacy.

The latest test for Obama is the reappearance of Wright, who is on a publicity tour designed to fight back against the impressions left from the snippets of his sermons that he is unpatriotic, anti-American, racist or, as he put it in his interview with Bill Moyers, quoting from the New York Times, a "whackadoodle."

Wright's speaking tour was clearly not authorized, sanctioned or prepped by the Obama campaign. Wright is speaking for himself, not for Obama, defending the traditions of the black church, which he sees as totally misunderstood by white America, and his own reputation. He has been dismissive of Obama -- describing him pejoratively as a politician who distanced himself from his pastor merely for political reasons.

For now, Wright has stolen the spotlight from Obama, injecting himself into the presidential campaign at a moment when Obama needs to be able to focus his message on those white working-class voters in Indiana who will help decide the outcome of the primary next Tuesday.

Obama is under conflicting pressures as he heads into the final week of campaigning in North Carolina and Indiana. He talked about the need to work even harder to reach out to blue-collar voters and for them to get to know him. "I am less familiar with some of these blue-collar voters than [Clinton]," he said on Fox News Sunday.

He acknowledged he has considerable work to do to bridge the gap. "I've got to be more present. I've got to be knocking on more doors. I've got to be hitting more events. We've got to work harder."

But can he do that with the Rev. Wright drawing so much attention? It's not likely he can overcome the media attention now riveted on his former pastor. For Obama, the reappearance of the Rev. Wright comes at just the wrong moment -- stealing time and attention Obama needs for himself, reminding superdelegates that, despite Obama's eloquent speech about race in America, the controversy likely will be a part of any general election campaign.

There are no easy answers for Obama at this point. Successful candidates fight through adversity. Clinton has demonstrated that at various points this spring, scoring electoral victories when defeat would have driven her from the race. The same, however, can be said for Obama, whose victory in Iowa may have been the most important of the entire Democratic race. He showed it again in South Carolina, not just by winning but by overwhelming Clinton at a time when racial politics were at the boiling point.

What he needs now is the passion to go with his patience. He has long maintained his own rhythm and pace. Early in the campaign, he stayed cool when some Democrats were rattled by his inability to move the polls. That instinct served him well. He believes now that he will be the nominee -- and that is still the most likely outcome.

But in the closing weeks of the primaries, he is facing among the most difficult challenges yet in his campaign. Clinton is providing the ultimate test -- a vigorous and capable opponent who refuses to go quietly. Rev. Wright offers a different test -- a controversial mentor who has an agenda other than to help elect his younger parishioner. The voters provide still another test.

How Obama responds will determine the endgame of the Democratic nomination battle and, if he prevails as expected, what kind of candidate the Democrats will have to stand against John McCain in November.

OBAMA IS OUR MAN Ok, so he has disowned Wright but who in their right mind wouldn't? I admire Obama though for giving his pastor of 20 years the benefit and not severing their relationship until Wright eluded to Obama merely pandering. It's like a couple married for 5, 10, 15 20 plus years and then divorcing. Even though you've had a long relationship, they may not be the same person you married so many years ago. You awake one day and say that's enough. Something causes that final riff and you got to go your separate ways. Obama & Michelle were never regular church-goers, ever. They were members like so many others but certainly weren't sitting in the pews every Sunday. I've no doubt that Wright's monkey shines Monday were a shock to Obama. He's got the biggest hill of all to claim because he has to fight off Hillary, McCain, Wright, right-wing radio and TV news shows that hammer the story for all it's worth. The coordinator of the press conference for Rev. Wright is a black woman and a Hillary supporter who vehemently hates Obama. So he even has agents of Hillary's and McCain nipping at his heels at every opportunity. We'll get to see just how tough he is, how much tenacity he has, how much audacity he can muscle. I still think he can pull it off, but he's got to hit the pavement running 180 mph non-stop, keeping on message, talking about his plans to improve the economy, improve healthcare, help end racial divisiveness and most of all end this stupid, pointless war. Hillary said she'll start moving folks home 60 days after she's elected but that's a lie. President or not she can't just pick a day outta of blue and say "alrighty let's bring everybody home now". Obama's resolution is much more realistic because he's not trying to put Iraq aka humpty dumpty back together again. He wants to do just enough to shore things up so we can start to ship people out. It wasn't a perfect country when we got there so why are we aiming for perfection now? And McCain wants to stay there another 50 to 100 years. Let's face it, anything with overtones of war, guns, blood and guts is a win for McCain. Hillary & McCain are two old, tired politicians who will take us down that worn out, old been-there-done-that-and-it-doesn't-work road again and again. OBAMA 2008 & 2012. GO OBAMA

Clinton is vigorous and capable ? Why does she get a free pass on Bosnia, which came out of her own mouth and Obama has to speak for his retired pastor ? This is utter nonsense and there is a disturbing lynch mob piling on gleeful mentality here.

Commit suicide if you went to school with a criminal
commit suicide if the local bar man where you drink happens to sell
commit suicide if you have attended a party and one guy in party is convict
commit suicide if one of your teachers has not paid tax
commit suicide if your bishop has abused a child

Basically always demand for a cv of all people you intend to meet even in the local gym or funeral

if you don't then you are as guilty as Obama for meeting wrong people.

Don't read my comments too before I post my criminal record!!!

Rev. Wright does not seem to be cowed by the media "Empire" or what they could potentially "Do" to him. We should all be like that. Campaign coverage has been like an ongoing Hard Copy, mostly because for years the media did whatever George Bush said (That's 8 years for y'all) and by now, their thinking caps are dusty and their mind has atrophied. And, all while Bush has been dictating to the media, our government has had layer upon layer of murky distance between the people and the government.

I'm sure everyone noticed who the Republicans let get the nomination - its not like Cheney wanted the job. Isn't that a clue? No heavyweights at all. Perhaps the beltway insiders believe it has become a black man's or a woman's job at this point, in other words, they don't care; the carcass is rotting, the gold has been mined, the corps have moved away. The bigger question is what is America going to do with all the working folks who believe that there are jobs around the corner.

I think we are getting the last dance shuffle before the walk to the gas chamber mysef.

John McCain stood by president Bush when he needed his endorsement. Now that he has the endorsement he wants to distance himself from the president. John also complains that Bush didn't do enough to help Katrina victims. The funny thing is John was sitting in the senate when the whole Katrina thing happened and he did not do anything to help the Katrina victims. Senators have as much or sometimes more power than the president in making a difference in peoples lives. But John McCain chose not to do anything, and now is walking around complaining about Bush. McCain has really no backbone regardless of whether he suffered in Vietnam.

Obama has no relationship with Ayers....how can you explain something that doesn't exist? They were on a charity together. Obama has nothing to do with him. Instead worry about the Clinton Fraud Trial....goggle it. That is something concrete to worry about.

DEBATE! DEBATE!! DEBATE!!!

It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.

Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her Pennsylvania victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources.

But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.

Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.

Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.

If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."

Sincerely

Jacksmith... Working Class :-)

Yes, there are many people who have very different world views than they had years ago. I know that mine has changed. I would hate for someone to remind me of some of the things that I said years ago. Even though I have never been a vindictive person, I am sure that I have said some things that I regret, especially if I were reminded of them today.
As for Wright's speech, I have a different take on it. Rev. Wright has availed himself of the opportunity to see and hear a lot during his life. It is very obvious that he has studied many cultures. Many of the points that he makes are valid. My own graduate research has actually been verified by some of the people he has referred to lately.

I believe it was Andy Warhol, who said everyone will get their 15 minutes of fame.

I thing reverend wright thinks this is HIS 15 minutes. How wrong he is. wright is going to f* everything up for Barak Obama.

It's really a shame. I think OBAMA has HUGE POTENTIAL for becoming a REALLY GREAT PRESIDENT.. but he's getting hit from all sides on the most ridiculous of NON-ISSUES and can't even run his campaign.

And what never ceases to amaze me still? Is that Barak Obama has kept to his word, and despite hillary's scummy campaigning, Barak has kept his pledge to run a POSITIVE CAMPAIGN. Kudos to Barak Obama.

As a Black man who was raised in the South I take offense to Rev. Wright implying that the Black Church preaches racism. I have heard preaching about all God's children and that God loves us one and all etc. He shouldn't tell the nation that he is the example/spokesperson for the Black Churches in America. Furthermore, Barack Obama should shut him down now if expects to win in Nov. Now one of two issues exist at this time:
1. Either Rev. Wright is totally pissed at Barack for stealing his messages of "hope" and repackaging it to sell as his own while at the same time kicking his "beloved" pastor to the curb in order to get the votes or
2. They have staged this battle/media circus like they have bones to pick with each other but really plan to be picking their teeth around the dinner table in the White House next year and laughing at how they pulled this off.

Posted by: Ebonyflash | April 28, 2008 11:09 PM

So why is McCain and his spiritual advisor Rod Parsley getting a pass. Parsley said the U.S. should destroy Islam. Headline news in Iran and Pakistan. McCain sings about bombing Iran and says he will be Hamas's worst nightmare. What does McCain mean by that?

Posted by: Mr. Unite Us | April 28, 2008 11:02 PM

Wow! Looking for any reason to jump the ship of Obama. For some, it doesn't take much. The same military officers, government officials, and private citizens that were quick to berate Clinton as Commander in Chief are the same ones who call people unpatriotic for not kissing the ground at Bush's feet. Give me a break. As a white man, I fully understand where Wright is coming from. His speech before his particular audiences is designed to raise discussion, reaction, and reflection. There are too many thin-skinned people in this country as witnessed on the TV tonight. The Rev. Wright and his kind may be God's test on us. If the U.S. in fact launched an unwarranted attack on Iraq, which over 60% of the American people believe, what does that make us? Perhaps your choice of words indicates the degree to which you prefer to use "polite" speech or "hateful" speech. However, the ultimate result is the same. Our friends around the world believe that we have committed war crimes and have been lead by a zealot. The religious right knows inflamatory words as well to describe the left. Words like "tolerance," "liberal," and "gay" are so hated in the "right" community, that there is nothing too bad for them to say. I really feel sad that we cannot dialogue with Rev. Wright and others because if we cannot, what are we showing about our ability to dialogue with others around the world? I guess our only response will be to do what unintelligent people do, FIGHT! Has anyone on this blog ever taken a psychology class in college? We need some divergent viewpoints.

Time for Rev. Wright to be featured guest on Oprah, then make the rounds of all the talks shows, do a couple of reality shows, some guest spots on comedies and just wear himself out.

For Obama, as he handles this with wisdom and poise, if it doesn't destroy him in the primary, it won't help the GOP later. They will need something else.

Posted by: Gaias Child | April 28, 2008 10:28 PM

Dear SVReader posting under cute new names:

You are too blind to see that Obama and Wright are not the same person, with very different backgrounds.

You are quick to condemn these men yet you dare not question your government because they are infallible! Just look at what a fabulous state the country is in after the flag-pin wearing Republicans have scared and divided the nation using non-issues like this fake controversy that you are foaming at the mouth over.

And yeah, you are a horrible human being as evidenced by your continued dishonest, ill-informed rants. Obama doesn't need your stinking vote so get over it.

If you can't see that, we're sorry for you.

Obama and Wright are as bad as George Wallace and David Duke."

First off, I don't want your "sympathy" because you are obviously blind and hateful.

Find me ANYTHING that Obama has written or stated that even approaches the level of racism espoused by Wallace or Duke. You won't be able to because that is not who he is, no matter how you try and play your guilt-by-association games.

As to Rev. Wright, if the white members of the United Church of Christ's congregation thought that he was a racist hate-monger, don't you think they would all leave? Don't you think the other churches that are affiliated with this one would have disowned it long ago?

People like you make this country a more unpleasant place to live.

Wright, bitter gate, bowling, Ayers. It is amazing how mole hills can be made into mountains. Clinton supporters should know about his kind of bull since we lived through media driven frenzy about scandal after substance free scandal.

I support Obama because he is the farthest from the neocon foreign policy nightmare we have now. McCain is a full fledged neocon who vociferously advocated preemptive war. Hillary is a liberal Hawk. Her comments about a "nuclear envelope" around the mideast that she brought up in the Penn debates highlights her neocon light bonefides.

The media frenzy over gotcha crap is not enough to distract me from voting to turn the page of our current disaster of foreign policy. Obama is the best able to move us in a new direction.

Posted by: birdman | April 28, 2008 9:41 PM

I voted for Senator Obama in my state's primary and I still support him today, but unfortunately, this may be the nail in the coffin for him. Jeremiah Wright is a hate-filled racist scumbag, there is no other way to put it. He's views are not only offensive some, such as the government started AIDS, are even downright idiotic. It is clear he is out for himself, he doesn't want to black candidate elected because then he couldn't continue to spread his victimology of hate. Has past service in military doesn't mean anything, he is expressing racism and hatred pure and simple.

I take Senator Obama at his word his Wright's views are not his own and given a choice between him and a warmonger (McCain) or someone who is patently dishonest (Clinton), he is still the best choice. I'm afraid others will feel differently and in a close race it will only take a small shift to Clinton to allow her to win. I don't know how Obama limits the damage, he ought to give the backstabbing hatemonger a knuckle sandwich, but Presidential candidates can't do that.

Maybe Wright and those who agree with him can feel proud of themselves; they may have destroyed the most promising black candidate in history, but now they have all the more reason to go on damning America.

If the number of years of experience is so great, rather than type of experience regardless of the number of years, it's amazing that there are any young CEOs in the country. For some reason, Bill Gates comes to mind as a relatively young person who changed the world with his vision about computers. I vote to pass the torch and move the dialog about race, health care, and so forth forward.

p.s. You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering...

You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. :-)

Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don't die from. And I could go on, and on...

As a retired, middle-aged, white Southerner, I was proud of myself for actually understanding the three major interviews/speeches that Jeremiah Wright has given since Friday. I am not offended. I am not seeing red. I was also directly involved in the frustrations of school desegregation in 1958. However, I know those who are offended! Surprise upon surprise when I mention my bigoted friends. Former Republican governor of Virginia Lynwood Holton talked about this in a guest column in the newpaper a few years ago when he basically said that the white racists have drifted to the Republican Party. People talk about Wright and his "hate speech." Nothing beats O'Rilley, Limbaugh, and the one-and-only most hateful person to ever be given a microphone Ann Coulter. Before getting upset, just listen to what J. Wright is saying. My preacher yells at the copngregation and often says nothing. J. Wright talks loudly but has a lot to say. We say that we believe in free speech until we hear what is uncomfortable. I do not believe that vulgarity is protected as free speech, but I have heard nothing from Rev. Wright that violates free speech. One must keep the entire sermon or speech of Rev. Wright in order to have the context. Even the Bible can be picked apart piece by piece. If President Bush and company can take away our rights in the name of security, I am glad that people like Rev. Wright are speaking out. It is time for us white people to figure out how we are going to exist as a minority population in this great nation of ours. Those of us, like Rev. Wright, who undertstand the full meaning of the "golden rule" will do fine, I predict. Keep it up Rev. Wright and keep moving forward Mr. Obama. Again, listen to all three speeches/interviews of Rev. Wright and then make your decision based on more than soundbites.

Posted by: JakeD | April 28, 2008 12:27 PM"

Get a grip JakeD...we'll need moderate Republicans and right of center Democrats to defeat Grandpa. AND YOU AND YOUR ILK HAD SOON BETTER GET IT. The Senator with 2 (two) years experience, and a community organizer with a real piece of work minister as a pal just AIN'T going nowhere in November.

Since you and some otherws need the lesson I'll provide it:

The rhetoric and associations with Wright are IMPORTANT. Think joined at the hips. And the SUBSTANCE of this bunch, regardless of relevance, DOES AND WILL NOT RESONATE WITH THE MAJORITY OF CENTRIST VOTERS.

And this will stand regardless of the rhetorical skills and talents of Senator Obama. A man whom I most certainly respect.

However, NEVER EVER CONFUSE Senator Clinton with a candidate who WILL WORK AGAINST YOUR INTERESTS AND MY INTERESTS.

She'll just accomplish what's needed to IMPROVE OUR LIVES without the damning talk, the marginalization talk, the borderline hateful talk (this really isn't 1953 and this is the tone and rhetoric of Minister Wright) and do so with DISPATCH and EFFICIENCY. And Lord help anyone who gets in the way of her or slows her down. And this, sir, is what our nation needs.

We needed this yesterday.

(and i say this with respect to senator obama and with admiration) ...(it's just that this is an election that DEMANDS a winner. And regardless of your HOPE and your Sinceritiy and your Good Will...there's a group of voters...a significant group of voters...who will go with Grandpa...and do so regardless of their economic vested self interest; when opposed by the anyone other than Senator Clinton.

Of course if you wish to disprove my theory then by all means awaken the morning after election to PresGrandpa.

BUT DON'T YOU DARE COMPLAIN TO ME OR ANYONE ELSE.

AP Poll: Clinton leads McCain by 9 points
By LIZ SIDOTI (Associated Press Writer)
From Associated Press
April 28, 2008 6:54 PM EDT
WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton now leads John McCain by 9 points in a head-to-head presidential matchup, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll that bolsters her argument that she is more electable than Democratic rival Barack Obama. Obama and Republican McCain are running about even.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 28, 2008 8:31 PM

The question is: Experience at what? McCain knows zilch about anything else but war. And everything of importance Hillary has tried has failed. Even her sham of a marriage.

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us repudiate a land that's so called free,
Let us all be hateful for a land that's so called fair,
As we raise our bitter voices in a solemn prayer.

God Da-mn America,
Land that I loathe.
Stand astride her, yet despise her
With a chip on a shoulder from above.
From the plantations, up to Harvard
To the Jews rich from our blood
God Da-am America, keepin' us down down down.

Obama is the new NIXON.

According to his supporters --

"If Obama does it, that means it is not a crime"

The rest of us feel differently.

We feel that Obama should stand up like a man, apologise for what he has done, resign from Senate and drop out of the race.

Obama has betrayed the trust of everyone he's ever been involved with.

He's a real jerk.

He doesn't deserve anyone's support, especially not young idealists.

Posted by: Obama is the new NIXON | April 28, 2008 8:01 PM

If Obama can be saddled with Wright, then Clinton can be saddled with her husband and all of his decisions during his administration. Let's let Hillary answer for the pardon of Mark Rich, for the pardons to sixteen members of the terrorist FALN group in exchange for campaign contributions, for the illegal firing and baseless charges against the White House travel employees in order to transfer charter business to a Clinton buddy, for the approval of most-favored nation trading status and WTO membership for China after receiving huge (and illegal) campaign donations from Chinese nationals, for the passage of NAFTA against the will of 60% of the American public, and for everything else that Hillary has been trying to hide away and claim had nothing to do with her.

Obama merely attended Wright's church; Hillary and Bill married each other.

Lynn, Take a few deep breaths. I hope that voters will not fall into the trap of voting for or against a candidate because of what someone he or she associates with says. I have friends and relatives who hold opinions that I don't embrace, but hey are still friends and still part of the family . I'm sure we could find people among the acquaintances of John McCain and Hillary Clinton who have expressed opinions they don't agree with.

Jordon, sadly there are too many people here that are driven by the primitive response of their reptile brains, tweaked by fear and the inability to move in a new direction.

They have been looking for an excuse to dismiss Obama and since they are racists themselves it is even better for them to turn it around and claim that his former pastor "hates white people" so therefore, Obama hates them as well, in spite of EVERYTHING he has ever said or done. The man is just as much white as he is black; he is not about division and fear.

I don't think that the millions of people that support Obama and his campaign are going to abandon him over this. It is just another bump in the road and scare tactics are just not going to work, not this time!

http://www.topix.com/denver/2008/04/jeremiah-wright-demands-race-and-privilege-are-the-central-obama-campaign-issues

Wow - just like that the drama ends as fast as Obama soared.

This will effectively end Obama's Presidential run and he will drop out of the race in order to prevent setting back civil rights 40+ years and heading off a modern day civil war.

This must have been Wright's way of getting even after Obama trashed him.

Bye- bye Barack

Posted by: danglingwrangler | April 28, 2008 7:46 PM

Obama never takes responsibility for his grave errors in judgment. According to his supporters, its always someone else's fault. In the case of Rev. Wright, that excuse is laughable. Obama chose Rev Wright over and over and over for over 20 years. He knew what Rev Wright was teaching and he just smiled and went along. I'm starting to wonder if Obama's an android. The guy clearly doens't have a heart or a soul. He doesn't care about anybody but himself. If being human is a requirement for being President (and I'm pretty sure it is :-) he should be forced to drop out on that basis alone.

Obama is evil, but he's good looking and he speaks well.

That's the most dangerous kind of person.

Bad people don't always look evil.

You have to look past their words and look at their actions.

Obama's actions show that he has a heart of solid ICE.

The real Barry Obama is a really bad guy.

He doesn't care about anyone but himself.

I feel sorry for his supporters.

Thanks to the moderate voices in this ongoing discussion re Rev. Wright and Senator Obama. For the rest, I think you owe it to yourselves to read a book, turn off the television, and think carefully about what you are saying. Because Obama worships at the Trinity Church does not make him a bad person, nor does it mean that he shares the views or the opinions of the pastor of that church. He is a Christian and he attends a very good church, and it only means that he worships at a church of his choosing.
Let us and the candidates talk about the issues that are important, not about whom one associates with.

Posted by: Jordan Davies | April 28, 2008 7:33 PM

In one press appearance, American people clearly get what Rev. Wright is all about.

But somehow Obama was in Rev. Wright's church for 20 years, Obama claims that he "didn't" know. What a liar!

I think Obama not only looks down at "poor, uneducated" people, but he also thinks American people are stupid.

Democrats are doomed. That's too bad.

Posted by: GY | April 28, 2008 7:22 PM

Posted by: Maria | April 28, 2008 7:15 PM

As long as people think Rev. Wright's words are the cause of the current state of affairs in this country, we are absolutely sure not to get out of the mire.

Last time I checked Rev. Wright had no control over the budgetary process in this country. He did not authorize a war in Iraq. In 2000 he wasn't the presidential candidate promising voters that he could "do something about oil prices," because he knew the Saudis (and boy has GWB done something!).

Judge the man by his deeds, not his words.

There's also the saying that the strongest critic is often the greatest ally. The Bush 30 and the right-wing noise machine can't handle the truth.

Obama is being criticized for what his pastor has said, and for worshiping God at his church, not his pastor. Clinton is criticized for what SHE has said and done (Travelgate at the White House; those pesky FBI files on their opponents at the beginning of the Clinton White House; finding files after the statute of limitations had run; where WAS she on the day that her friends received pardons?? claiming, as a billing partner, that she couldn't remember billing time to certain clients (ask any lawyer--that claim can't be true!), Bosnian sniper fire; supporting NAFTA, then opposing it (think flip-flopping won't be an issue in the general election?); calling Monica a stalker to the national press, rather than recognizing the well-worn signs of a wandering husband; and this is just the beginning. Obama has shown true class in not destroying the Party by calling national attention to these details. The general elections won't be as classy. All of the criticisms of Obama seem tangential by comparison.

Posted by: annie tronetti | April 28, 2008 6:37 PM

Do you honestly think the Republicans are done "vetting" the Clintons. You know darn well how the other side has been drooling over the possibility of running against Hillary.

You see....this is stuff Obama would not dream of throwing on Clinton, because he means what he says about how we need a change in our political climate. Does it stop Hillary from piling on him. No. But that's because she's from the OLD school.

And Obama's example just made me delete a bunch of crap from this very post, that they would use on Hillary. Because I'm TRYING to follow Barack's example.

This is what happens when you have dirt on the Clintons :
1 - James McDougal - Clinton's convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack,
while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr's investigation.
2 - Mary Mahoney - A former White House intern was murdered July 1997 at a Starbucks Coffee
Shop in Georgetown. The murder happened just after she was to go public with her story of sexual
harassment in the White House.
3 - Vince Foster - Former white House councilor, and colleague of Hillary Clinton at Little Rock's
Rose Law firm. Died of a gunshot wound to the head, ruled a suicide.
4 - Ron Brown - Secretary of Commerce and former DNC Chairman. Reported to have died by impact
in a plane crash. A pathologist close to the investigation reported that there was a hole in the top of
Brown's skull resembling a gunshot wound. At the time of his death Brown was being investigated,
and spoke publicly of his willingness to cut a deal with prosecutors.
5 - C. Victor Raiser II and Montgomery Raiser, Major players in the Clinton fund raising organization

wound to the head. Ruled a suicide. Ed Willey died on the same day his wife Kathleen Willey claimed
Bill Clinton groped her in the oval office in the White House. Ed Willey was involved in several
Clinton fund raising events.
8 - Jerry Parks - Head of Clinton's gubernatorial security team in Little Rock. Gunned down in his
car at a deserted intersection outside Little Rock. Park's son said his father was building a dossier on
Clinton. He allegedly threatened to reveal this information. After he died the files were mysteriously
removed from his house.
9 - James Bunch - Died from a gunshot suicide. It was reported that he had a "Black Book" of people
which contained names of influential people who visited prostitutes in Texas and Arkansas.
10 - James Wilson - Was found dead in May 1993 from an apparent hanging suicide. He was reported
to have ties to Whitewater.
11- Kathy Ferguson, ex-wife of Arkansas Trooper Danny Ferguson, was found dead in May 1994, in
her living room with a gunshot to her head. It was ruled a suicide even though there were several
packed suitcases, as if she were going somewhere. Danny Ferguson was a co-defendant along with
Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones lawsuit. Kathy Ferguson was a possible corroborating witness for Paula
Jones.
12 - Bill Shelton - Arkansas State Trooper and fiancee of Kathy Ferguson. Critical of the suicide ruling
of his fiancee, he was found dead in June, 1994 of a gunshot wound also ruled a suicide at the grave
site of his fiancee.
13 - Gandy Baugh - Attorney for Clinton's friend Dan Lassater, died by jumping out a window of a

delivered a report to Janet Reno three weeks before his death
19 - Jon Parnell Walker - Whitewater investigator for Resolution Trust Corp. Jumped to his death
from his Arlington, Virginia apartment balcony August15, 1993. He was investigating the Morgan
Guarantee scandal.
20 - Barbara Wise - Commerce Department staffer. Worked closely with Ron Brown and John Huang.
Cause of death unknown. Died November 29, 1996. Her bruised, nude body was found locked in her
office at the Department of Commerce.
21- Charles Meissner - Assistant Secretary of Commerce who gave John Huang special security
clearance, died shortly thereafter in a small plane crash.
22 - Dr. Stanley Heard - Chairman of the National Chiropractic Health Care Advisory Committee,
died with his attorney Steve Dickson in a small plane crash. Dr. Heard, in addition to serving on
Clinton's advisory council personally treated Clinton's mother, stepfather and brother.
23 - Barry Seal - Drug running pilot out of Mena, Arkansas, death was no accident.
24 - Johnny Lawhorn Jr. - Mechanic, found a check made out to Bill Clinton in the trunk of a car left
at his repair shop. He was found dead after his car had hit a utility pole.
25 - Stanley Huggins - Investigated Madison Guarantee. His death was a purported suicide and his
report was never released.
26- Hershell Friday - Attorney and Clinton fund raiser died March 1, 1994 when his plane exploded.
27 - Kevin Ives and Don Henry - Known as "The boys on the track" case. Reports say the boys may
have stumbled upon the Mena Arkansas airport drug operation. A controversial case, the initial report
of death said, due to falling asleep on railroad tracks. Later reports claim the two boys had been slain
before being placed on the tracks. Many linked to the case died before their testimony could come

before a Grand Jury.
THE FOLLOWING PERSONS HAD INFORMATION ON THE IVES/HENRY CASE:
28 - Keith Coney - Died when his motorcycle slammed into the back of a truck, July 1988.
29 - Keith McMaskle - Died stabbed 113 times, Nov, 1988

31 - Jeff Rhodes - He was shot, mutilated and found burned in a trash dump in April 1989.
33 - James Milan - Found decapitated. However, the Coroner ruled his death was due to "natural
causes."
34 - Jordan Kettleson - Was found shot to death in the front seat of his pickup truck in June 1990.
35 - Richard Winters - A suspect in the Ives / Henry deaths. He was killed in a set-up robbery July 1989.

Here's a quiz:
Who said this....

"This stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain," the nation's best-known preacher declared as he agreed with a stream of bigoted Nixon comments about Jews and their perceived influence in American life.

"You believe that?" says Nixon after the "stranglehold" comment.

"Yes, sir," says ?

"Oh, boy," replies Nixon. "So do I. I can't ever say that but I believe it."

"No, but if you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something," replies ?

Later, ? mentions that he has friends in the media who are Jewish, saying they "swarm around me and are friendly to me." But, he confides to Nixon, "They don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country."

This well-known man of God also recommended that Nixon bomb the dams in Vietnam. (never mind that would have cost a million more lives).

Hint: George W. Bush says this well known preacher is responsible for his born-again belief.

Answer: Billy Graham
Result: Barely a ripple in the news cycle.

Whether or not we agree with Reverend Wright (and I was moved by the power, clarity and intelligence behind his remarks), he has the right, as we all do, to speak his truth. These were not Obama's words, just as Governor Rendell's praising of Farrakhan were not Hillary's words. John McCain's friend and supporter, Rev. John Hagee, is actively working to hasten "armageddon" and indicated that God damned this country by punishing New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina. McCain has said that he is very proud of Rev. Hagee but that "does not mean that I support or endorse or agree with some of the things that Pastor John Hagee might have said or positions that he may have taken on other issues." Sound familiar?

But why is the media working overtime to prove Obama guilty-by-association, while downplaying similar connections of the other candidates? Here's why: Obama is a threat to the status quo - to the influence of the rich and powerful. His record-breaking grassroots campaign donations leave him obligated to nobody but We the People.

"His racist remarks speak for themselves, but it is (in my case at least, and likely with other veterans) not "hate-filled" vitriol", but instead resenting his hate-filled remark against the USA (from the pulpit yet). There is NO excuse for that. Please don't tar other people with Wright's brush."

OK, fair enough. I accept you were not tarring with Wright's brush.

You ask if some have "hatred" inside that comes out in their posts concerning Wright.
I answered above. You have now turned to another issue, but back to your original question about "hatred". Care to respond to my answer to your question? It's at the top of this post.

Obama is kaput! A black man we thought would reassure whites has allowed himself to be turned into just another black -- fanatical, angry, not what the Germans call salonfaehig.

Dan,

This is just the latest test Obama has failed. The guy isn't ready to be President or VP of anything. He needs to drop out of the race now before he hurts himself even more...

Posted by: Obama keeps failing his tests | April 28, 2008 5:58 PM

"Obama it [the power of his machine] again in South Carolina, not just by winning but by overwhelming Clinton at a time when racial politics were at the boiling point."

There it is again, mean old Clinton playing the race card. Why? Because Bill Clinton said Obama's speech was not not equivalent to a U.S. Senate vote, but in that context a fairytale. And what's so bad about being compared to Jessie Jackson, unless your a Republican??! . . . . But Bill was playing a race card.

And last week, it comes out that the Obama campaign all the way back before S. Carolina was planning ways that it could use the "race card" accusation at the first and every opportunity.

AND REMEMBER REV. WRIGHT WAS MORE THAN OBAMA'S PASTOR; HE WAS OBAMA'S SPIRITUAL ADVISOR.

Posted by: Coldcomfort | April 28, 2008 5:56 PM

Obama's big problem was that he was too quick to take the nomination for granted. For all his talk of being a unifier, he does not ever have seen the need to unify the Democratic Party behind him. Ohio and Pennsylvania were big losses for him. Those losses show that a very significant part of the Democratic Party has rejected his candidacy. It is hard to see that the remaining primaries are going to change very much. Obama will end the primaries with more delegates than Clinton but not with enough to win the nomination. Then we will see if enough superdelegates are committed to him to wrap the nomination up or whether there is enough uncertainty to take the contest to the convention. He clearly has connected with a large number of younger voters and significantly expanded their participation in the electoral process. Perhaps that will be enough to carry him to victory in November. But his failure to win in any of the major states outside Illinois certainly leaves many question marks attached to his candidacy, the quality of his political judgement, and his ability to lead the country.

Posted by: dnjake | April 28, 2008 5:42 PM

Obama simply can't lose general election. Obama should win nomination, as he is ICOMPARABLY better than Mrs. Clinton ever was, is, or shall be at any, pertienent to the presidential job, point of view.
Clintons out!! Enough of dirty lies, and criminal behavior in White House!

Posted by: aepelbaum | April 28, 2008 5:41 PM

The Cure is a Clinton/Obama ticket.

Obama gets a chance to actually gain some experience, and America gets to see who he actually is.

then he can run in 12 or 16 years.
he's plenty young enough.

will Obama do it for the good of America and the good of the democratic party?

Posted by: Sonya | April 28, 2008 5:39 PM

I will stick with my previous comments. If this whole bru ha ha would have happened back in February, before Super Tuesday, Obama would have lost handily, and Hillary would be the nominee with Obama as VP. Don't worry Dems it isn't our fault. The media failed in its duty to investigate all candidates equally, and gave Obama a free pass until about 3 weeks ago. Obama is going to win the nomination, and lose the election. Its a shame really, we should have had this one............

We all know the race-haters on this blog are Limbaugh listeners. Limbaugh encourages them and we ignore them, because we know they just don't know any better.

If they did it wouldn't be this way.

Obama and Wright are one in the same.

Both are vile, hate-filled racists who would love to destroy this country and kill all the Jews.

Posted by: B. Lloyd | April 28, 2008 5:22 PM

James, if you find the Rev. Wright's church so very frightening perhaps you should arm yourself and go hide under your bed.

Posted by: So sick of this "story" | April 28, 2008 5:18 PM

Go Rev. Wright!

Glad I finally got the chance to hear him speak. He seems like a friendly old man just preaching the Gospel.

Rev. Wright is smart! He is witty and has personality +PLUS!

He is a man of God and is most definitely
energized. He may be stuck in the 60's but he sure seems honest. I think the 60's was mostly filled with either honest or loving or radical people. Most people kinda fit into one of those categories. I think he's an honest man and appears to have Type-A personality.

To recap:
Billw said (re Wright):
"His racist remarks speak for themselves, but it is (in my case at least, and likely with other veterans) not "hate-filled" vitriol", but instead resenting his hate-filled remark against the USA (from the pulpit yet). There is NO excuse for that. Please don't tar other people with Wright's brush."

NM Moderate said:
"I am not tarring anybody with Wright's brush. If you disagree with his views - fine - I disagree with them also. What the last few days have shown me is that Wright is not the lunatic he was portrayed as. He seems to me like a bitter old man with some kooky ideas. He also seems like an intelligent and responsible member of his community. He seems totally dedicated to lifting up the disadvantaged in his community. You and I may disagree with some of his more provacative views, but the measure of a man should be on the totality of his life's work. Given all of that, I fail to see why his association with Obama disqualifies Obama from the -nomination."

You originally said:
"Why is it that those of you who call Rev. Wright a "hate-filled ... (pick your derogatory term) sound so "hateful" in your posts? Does Rev. Wright represent some "hatred" that is actually inside of you?"

----

OK, fair enough. I accept you were not tarring with Wright's brush.

You ask if some have "hatred" inside that comes out in their posts concerning Wright.
I answered above. You have now turned to another issue, but back to your original question about "hatred". Care to respond to my answer to your question? It's at the top of this post.

Posted by: Billw | April 28, 2008 5:14 PM

IS OBAMA'S CHURCH RACIST?: For those who think that Rev. Wright is not an issue in the campaign, I beg to differ. First, it doesn't matter that Rev. Wright has resigned; he was Obama's "mentor and spiritual adviser" for 20 years. Second, there is no dispute that Rev. Wright believes in and preaches black liberation theology. He admitted it on the church's website, before the church scrubbed the site for offensive materials in an effort to conceal their true nature. Third, I recommend that all read a few books about black liberation theology to learn more about Obama's so-called "religion," and make the determination for yourselves whether or not it has any relationship to Christianity or the teachings of Jesus. Just to give you a head start, here are a few quotes from a founder of black liberation theology (and Rev. Wright's theological mentor), Rev. James Cone, about Obama's religion:

(1) "To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people." (2) "While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism." (3) "All white men are responsible for white oppression." (4) "Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man "the devil." (5) "If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist, the white church seems to be a manifestation of it." (6) "Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

Now, if you don't think that the statements above are racist, then you and I can agree to disagree. The real issue is that Americans in general need to know about the racist nature of Obama's religion, because it goes to the heart of his character and judgment. Then, once America understands this issue, if they agree with the racist bent of his church, so be it. I have a feeling, however, that once people find out about this issue, he will be losing supporters by the droves. If it doesn't happen now, it will in the general election if, God forbid, he is the Democratic nominee.

Democrats must soon decide between Hillary's lies and McCarthyism, her being Bush Lite and not even a liberal, and the truth Obama and the Rev Wright are both speaking. Wright is speaking truths that are uncomfortable politically but they are not anti-American in any sense close to what GW Bush has done over the past 8 years or Hillary and Bill Clinton over the past 6 months. The Clintons are shameful and shameless. Time to bow out, Hillary.

"lost middle America" Hmmm....I think you might need a little geography lesson - Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Missouri - that looks like America's heartland, right smack dab in the middle of America.

The people that believe that rev wright is a racist or anti Americans have been misled. If you speak to any white person that knows rev wright, they will tell you that he is not racist, and that he is a true friend to them. He joined the Marines by choice after hearing JFK's speech "ask not what your contry can do for you, but what you can do for your country" so he joind to serve the country he loves. After serving he recieved three letters of commendations. Most of the people that are calling him a anti American never did anything positive to help this country. Is it anti-American to speak out against injustice in American? Is it anti-American to speak out agaist forign policies that goes agaist what this country should stand for? WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

With respect to the media bias question:

My hypothesis is that America is run by energy, agribusiness, pharmeceutical, telecommunication, and financial corporations. It is pretty clear that Washington is infested with politicians representing these interests, and laws are written by them and for their benefit. IMHO, Hillary and McCain are owned by these interests who stand to lose a great deal of influence and $$$ if a grass roots president gains the oval office.

If there is a media bias for or against any candidate (and I believe there is) tearing down which candidate would most benefit the corporate overlords (best maintain the status quo)?

We have Kristol, Rove, Limbaugh, Scaife and Coulter lining up for Hillary. Looks like they have picked the easy mark for November.

Dan Balz: You've just turned an older white male into a ferocious young black man. Your campaign horse-race piece exemplifies what's wrong with the media and what's wrong with America.

You are a naive tool of the Clinton campaign, with no saving grace and no political angle. You don't care about anything, including doing your job well.

Posted by: walden | April 28, 2008 4:54 PM

I am really sorry for Obama. I was sure he had dodged a fatal bullet with Wright. Like a horror film where the monster won't die...my god...Rev Wright comes back to life, and the media are there like the blood suckers they are. Waiting for the show. Oh my god...and a show they got. This man is a fool and just ruined the chance of a intelligent African American's chance of accomplishing the unthinkable in America. Who has an excellent talent in negotiation that could of helped us with our problems at home and around the world. Now...Hillary will get the nomination and lose to McCain. Why? The Republicans have so much dirt on Hillary and Bill Clinton that it will make Rev Wright look like a choir boy. Just wait until they unload on Hillary's sex scandals, her terrorist ties and the contributors to the Clinton library, just to name a few. Then all American and the World will see why the Republicans wanted Obama out of the race. Sadly...the result is going to be at least 4 more years of Bush.
If I may use the words of the ignorant, who allow the media to do their thinking for them.

God help us all.

Meanwhile, in Iraq:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/28/AR2008042800144.html?hpid=moreheadlines

Last time I checked, Rev. Wright was not running for office.

That some of you are so threatened by the fact that a older black man (who was a Marine) has the "temerity" to take issue with some government policies is really laughable. You think that your cowardice is shared by the millions of people that support Barack Obama? Think again.

Posted by: Maria | April 28, 2008 4:49 PM

matt,
Here's the excuse I usually hear from white people when you engage them about slavery: "we weren't there and have nothing to do with what our ancestors did".
Fair enough!
Except for the fact that Obama's supposed to answer for his pastor, everyone he's ever said hello to, and probably the twisters hitting the mid-west.
Ridiculous, indeed!

Posted by: joseph pierre | April 28, 2008 4:47 PM

Obama is done. Stick a fork in him. Its over.

He may win the left and right coasts, Obama has lost middle America.

The super delegates will surely look at all of these mess in selecting the nominee. Do not be surprised when Clinton wins the popular vote and they select her. Anything less is irresponsible.

Posted by: Obama cooked | April 28, 2008 4:44 PM

Good thing the Superdelegates don't drop their dresses at every tawdry tidbit that comes along in this campaign like members of our esteemed media do.

Regardless of what Wright does, Obama has this nomination locked up.

There is no chance (contrary to what the author of this article asserts) that Hillary could catch Obama in pledged delegates.

There is also no chance that the Superdelegates are going to overturn the will of the voters and deliver the nomination to Clinton because they realize this would basically destroy the Democratic party for years to come. Good luck winning a general election without African American voters, Independent voters, and a very energized group of young voters. Superdelegates are not idiots, they understand this very well.

Now the media (for its own selfish reasons) will continue to attempt to drive the process forward, however, it will all be an illusion because this race has been over since Obama won the 11 straight victories by huge margins.

Posted by: gthstonesman | April 28, 2008 4:43 PM

I support Barack Obama.
I do not seek perfection in a candidate as I believe no such candidate exists. I understand that the candidate I support has both strengths and weaknesses. I have weighed those strengths and weaknesses against the strengths and weaknesses of the other candidates to arrive at my decisions. I judge the candidates by their own words and actions, not by the words and actions of others. Is there anything easier to twist than other people's words?

If the same analytical criteria are applied equally to all three candidates: past statements, ethical lapses, historical embellishment or distortion, questionable associations, Obama appears no worse, and in actuality, a whole lot cleaner than his competitors.

Also, I find Obama's revolutionary approach of treating the electorate as if they are able to digest and evaluate concepts that require more than a 5 word soundbite to be quite refreshing.

The problem with many Americans is that they can only perceive darkness in those with whom they disagree while being totally blind to the darkness in their own souls.

Posted by: Joebewildered | April 28, 2008 4:42 PM

Why do Balz and so many other "journalists" take it on themselves to give Obama advice, instead of informing readers (aka voters) about the issues and the candidates' stances on them, or other relevant issues that would affect our votes? If they want to be campaign managers, then let them switch jobs.
I'm sick of the media's constant puffing up of Obama and tearing down of Clinton. Despite it all, Clinton will win in the end because Obama has no experience, bad judgment, and cannot connect with working Americans.

Posted by: Oboy | April 28, 2008 4:41 PM

The majority of these posts prove one thing. Racism is alive and well in the U. S. of A. Where were all these people when we heard the bizarre statements of Billy Graham against Jews, or Hagee against Catholics, or Falwell and Dobson against just about everybody except their narrow little right-wing clique? But when a Black preacher brings up our nation's past and present injustices...whoa! Rev. Wright's reference to reconciliation is right on. We can't reconcile when we don't even admit the wrongs.

I am a member of United Church of Christ, which has a long history of being active Christians. They actively follow Christ's teachings...that the greatest commandments are to love God, yourself and your neighbor. "Whatever you do unto the least among you, you do unto me." Think about that! When you help the poor, you are showing love for God. When you are hateful and mean, you are hating God.

Posted by: Joyce | April 28, 2008 4:41 PM

Dan Balz did very well with this article. He stated facts and conclusions that follow from logic, not emotion.

Obama will almost certainly win the nomination. He does not like the idea of "backing into" it. He has to face the Wright issue and the older, blue-collar lack of connection issue.

How he handles these issues will show what he's made of. Anyone is better than Bush III (aka McCain). Clinton thought she had a free ride to the nomination and acted imperious. Her reaction to adversity shows to her favor. She still has the negatives of "political" exaggeration (aka lies).

Now's the real test. Is Obama what he says he is -- a new beginning for America? His heart may be right, but is he up to the task? We're about to find out.

He should stop playing it safe and be bold. I'm waiting even though I have no say at all in the outcome. In the fall, I'll have to vote for whichever Democrat is on the ballot. If this mess doesn't get resolved soon, it could be Biden or Richardson.
