Obama on Rev. Wright: "He Does Not Speak for Me"

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) speaks during a news conference at Wilmington Airport in Wilmington, N.C., April 28, 2008. (Associated Press)
By Peter Slevin
WILSON, N.C. -- Sen. Barack Obama wants everyone to know that he is not the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and that the talkative Wright does not speak for him.
On a day when his longtime pastor at Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ seemed to pop up every five minutes in the mainstream media and the blogosphere, Obama emphasized the distance between them.
"I have said before and I will repeat again that some of the comments that Reverend Wright have made offend me and I understand why they've offended the American people," Obama said in a brief airport tarmac press conference in Wilmington, N.C.
"He does not speak for me," Obama said. "He does not speak for the campaign. He may make statements in the future that don't reflect my values or concerns."
Obama was asked if he felt betrayed by Wright, who played a significant role in Obama's spiritual life for 20 years, performed his wedding and inspired the title of Obama's most recent book, "The Audacity of Hope."
"I just want to emphasize that this is my former pastor," Obama said. "Any of the statements that he's made both to trigger this controversy and that he's made over the last several days are not statements that I've heard him make previously. They don't represent my views. And they don't represent what this campaign's about."
Obama did not mention Wright at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, where he spoke and took questions for about 80 minutes. In response to a question about his faith, Obama spoke at length but did not use it as an opening to say yet more about Wright.
No one in the enthusiastic 5,000-person crowd asked him about the controversy, nor did anyone tonight among 1,900 people packed into a high school gym in Wilson. Obama is due to lead a rally later in Chapel Hill inside the Dean Smith Center, better known as the Dean Dome, during his third and final event of the day.
Focusing on the crucial days before the May 6 primaries in North Carolina and Indiana, Obama seemed determined to wrench his campaign back to the basic messages that propelled him to a strong lead in pledged delegates. He spoke of moving away from "distortions and distractions."
And he got a standing ovation after telling the crowd that he was determined to move beyond a rough stretch of the campaign that he described as overly negative, not to mention injurious to the health of his candidacy.
"Having politicians bickering back and forth doesn't help you," Obama said. "Having them worrying about superdelegates doesn't help you. This election is not about me. It's not about Senator Clinton. It's not about John McCain. It's about you. It's about your struggles, your hopes and dreams."
The crowd roared.
Obama said that his campaign in recent weeks got "sucked into this whole negative thing. People throw elbows at you. You start feeling like, 'Oh, I got to throw an elbow back,'" Obama said. "I told this to my team, that we are starting to sound like other folks. We're starting to run the same negative stuff and it shows that none of us are immune from this kind of politics."
He added, "For the next nine days, between now and May 6, and the next nine months between now and November, and the next nine years" -- and here he was interrupted by cheers -- "I am going to spend all my time talking about you."
On the tarmac in Wilmington, Obama was asked how he intends to move beyond Wright, with all the attention Wright is getting from the media, as well as from Clinton and presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain.
"What I think is interesting is none of the voters I talk to ask about it," Obama said. "Now, there may be people who are troubled about it and are being polite in not asking me about it. But that's not what I hear from the voters. What I'm hearing is concerns about gas prices. I'm hearing from people concerned about their jobs being shifted overseas."

Is it necessary to do or say some mind boggling thing to get media attention. I don'tknow . It's just politricks.
Preachers know that to grab the attention of a mind wandering audience,in your sermon you build a figurative bridge, build a figurative fire, then destroy the figurative bridge if necessary so that people can examine their options.Your sermon soaked in prayer backed up with scripture from the Bible then has got their attention.
Julius Caesar, history tells us, once did something similar by ordering his army the centurions etc to burn their ships on the shores of a foreign land.
Julius Caesar by issuing such a command inspired a fighting spirit and loyalty in his men to fight so that they could win the battle and win the war and go home to their loved ones. How does that relate to Reverend Jeremiah Wright? As an individual, he may have by deliberate intention focused the media mindset on the stark realities of prejudice.Racial prejudice, religious prejudice, bigotism, bitterness, hatred, malice, unfair media coverage, soundbites and deliberate mind manipulation in this high tech society and the need for reconciliation, truth, self examination, forgiveness, confession, repentance and constructive engagement in this present society.
Will it damage Barak? Who knows.Does America care for Barak with all the media frenzy and media post mortems of his name, his freinds, his associates ?.Yes some American's care. Others don't ,if you read the positive and negative chatlines, some do and some don't. So what. Nobody is perfect. Some people like you others hATE YOU .SO WHAT. THAT'S REALITY.
America may need to have its own TRUTH COMMISSION for a reality check up. Will America have one? Who knows? Does America care?Yes.America cares for the good, the prospering, the dreamers, the ambitious ,the good and the not so good, the downtrodden, the sick ,the lame ,the unwanted, the ones with dreams and broken dreams. Some people are honest and others are not so honest. So what? NOBODY IS PERFECT. WE ALL HAVE OUR FAULTS ....BUT THERE IS SELF IMPROVEMENT and rehabilation for those who need it!!!!
There is strong undercurrents of a reality check up. Why?. Look back to KATRINA, HURRICANE KATRINA.Look back to yesterday down memory lane when everything was perfect until someone broke your dreams.
The ostrich likes to bury it's head in the sand and the ostrich some say thinks as long as its head is buried in the sand , it's vision is impaired and restricted and in this ostrich mindset what it cannot see the ostrich believes in it it's ostrich birdbrain is not there? The ostrich needs a reality check up.
America is a great country. America is an IMMIGRANT BASED COUNTRY. That is why it is great. The beacon of hope of democracy. The open forum of democracy allows freedom of speech because America believes all men are created equal. That is on paper . That is in black and white, but some do not accept that because of the way they were brought up.
sOME OF THEIR TEACHERS MAY HAVE told them that some people are inferior to them and other people are superior. That is wrong teaching.tHAT IS WHY THERE IS SO MUCH CONTROVERSY TO DAY. The truth will set you free.
South Africa under NELSON MANDELA had a time of TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION. Things that worried and hurt and disturbed and offended many people had to be talked about. PEACEFULLLY, TRUTHFULLY, IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF RECONCILIATION WITHOUT RETRIBUTION,UNDER THE BANNER OF FORGIVENESS AND TRUE PEACE OF MIND.
GOD BLESS AMERICA. GOD BLESS TRUTH AND GOD BLESS RECONCILIATION.GOD BLESS THE PEACEMAKERS.
All this mudslinging politics and slinging back mud, and negative below the belt teleads is no good. Look how much money candidates are blatantly spending to get elected when there is a food crisis in AFRICA AND DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD. But people are so concerned with their own point of view they will forget people are dying without food, without democracy, without hope in other nations.
Maybe REVEREND WRIGHT MAY BE WRONG IN THE WAY HE SAYS WHAT HE SAYS, but maybe we need to take a GOOD LONG LOOK at ourselves.Maybe,it is time for self examination .Time for honest self judgement. Is it right to think about self first and others last? Is unfair treatment of minorities a paper excercise that does not mean nothing under our roofs? Are we really christians or make believers? Do we believe in God or are we apostate? GOD HAVE MERCY ON US ALL ?.

Now that all the fuss of the Wright/Obama association is just a post script and old news the media can sit back and watch Barak win next week big time.
After he wins no doubt some self professed political experts can consult their notes and see that their polls were wrong again and Barak obama is very popular in America and that Bill O'Reilly's Fox news interview with Hillary Was timely for Barak.Yeah, Hillary did a big favour for Barak.
Barak's speech was watched by record number of people sitting on the fence that will now vote for Barak contrary to what the polls say.
So there you have it .Barak will win over Hillary by a massive 17% margin. Watch the press for details. Hasta la vista Baby! Errol Smythe.

Timeout! Time to reassess strategies.Time to tear down fences of suspicion, division and downgrading and time to build new bridges of understanding and reconciliation. Time for a new beginning to forget the past and to reach out a hand of reconciliation and enter a covenant ofpeace. The dust has to settle and it has to settle now so that the road that leads to victory may be clearly seen and walked on with confidence by those who want change.
Yesterday had it's problems. Today has it's own. Time is too short to spend worrying about who said what. There are more urgent issues to be addressed.Recent events will have a direct bearing on next week's votes.
By next week a clear winner will emerge for the Democratic party. The groundwork for change may have been discussed and deliberated, and may be on hold until next week when there may be a major announcement after a clear and definite winner is known . The American people will decide by democratic vote and the the Democratic Party can move forward together with confidence. Errol Smythe.

Of course he speaks for you, Senator Obama.
$47,000 in two years' worth that you gave the church in just the past two years.
No one gives that kind of money lightly.
It's just that now others outside the church hear what you heard, too.
Thank you, Rev. Wright!

Blaming Barrack for comments made by a former pastor is irrational. If we want to start placing the BLAME on anyone let it be the racist forefathers of this country and every American President for continuing a legacy of racism. Comments such as those made by Rev. Wright would have never been made had America "the land of the free" opted not to enslave and oppress certain groups of people. I don't understand why the American public is unable to relate to one mans bitterness. America committed the worst hate crimes known to man why should Black people forget or just act as slavery and Jim Crow never happened. The issues need to be addressed. Race is something that needs to be addressed. Black people were not able to receive any apology for 500 years of slaughter let alone the current forms of oppression. So why should Barrack or any other Black person for that matter be obligated to apologize or make amends for comments made by Wright. Look on the bright side at least comments were made bashing the American culture rather than chains, water hoses, dogs, and other items which were used on Blacks. Words don't hurt but years and years of rape and injustices do. But it is so easy for people who are not affected by issues such as race to not relate. I don't understand and I never will understand the hypocrisy of the American culture. You place the blame and hold grudges against people who may say something which is considered disgraceful or rude but you expect Blacks to forget how this same America culture enslaved, raped, and murdered countless amounts of African people. Its funny how the American public can't get past a weeks worth of controversial comments and they expect for Blacks, Native Americans, and other oppressed groups to forget events that occurred for more than 500 years.
And also how can Clinton, a woman who has never worked a day in her life and who was born into wealth identify with the working class let alone the poor. Do you honestly think that she would sacrifice her riches for the poor? If Hilary is so gun hold on alleviating poverty then she should let go of some of her millions.

I'm glad Barack spoke out against Rev. Wright. And to the person that mentioned Bill Cosby - you are not responsible for what others say. Their words are just that, their words, their opinion, and not of Barack. Hey folks, it's called freedom of speech and that is what Rev. Wright did, he exercised his right to his opinion. Enough said about this whole thing,it is getting so out of hand, it is unreal!

Rev Wright didn't say anything wrong. You white folks are just too narrow minded to understand. Our cultures are differnt and that includes the way we pray. Get over this bull you are trying to find to not like Obama. The american people i.e the white americans are not ready for frank and real talk about race relations and until then whites will not understand. It funny and they think they are better,NOT.

Tell you what I could give a flying F what Rev. Wright says. I could also give a flying F what the media has to say about Obama now.
I doesn't matter WHAT Barack Obama does........Hillary will make sure the media frames Obama as some kind of extremist. No one can overcome the cursory US media, which time and time again starves the public of facts and pumps them up with sensationalism.
This country has allot of growing up to do. Until America grows up, someone like Obama will never be President. The people of this country doesn't want the truth, we want to be right.

I don't understand people sometimes you don't know the full extent of a person until they roll out all their inner being. For instance, look at that man that held his daughter captive in the basement for 24 years. People knew him and thought he was nice and everything. He went to parties, family get-togethers and had friends. If going by what everyone is stating on this website then since the man has been caught everyone that knew him should have known what he was doing since all of these children were popping up but his wife was never pregnant. Of course then everyone including his wife, who lived in the house should then go up for trial. Do you get what you guys are talking about because I don't like the non-listening or accusation factors being stated on here. Calling this man scum that never did any murder or rape is a bit harsh and judgmental. How many of you would like to be judge by the people you hang out with...for all you know they may have kid-porn in the closet.
There are people out there and they happen to be of various colours that have known mass murders. These people may have said something strange but no one took note of it. Are the people that knew them guilty then of the same crime? Why isn't it looked at the same way the Wright issue is being looked at...guilty by association? Is it a colour issue; which is something we really need to get away from to actually function in this country? I am sooooo tired of it. We do need to grow up and stop looking at something G_d given and one can not change. We are human and need to stop being so easily swayed by what people say and we need to look at are we being played like a fiddle. Start a little fire and the people will make it burn although we could easily put it out.

Thanks Robert Lewis for the info. I am going to research this. Like I said, one has to look at the timing of all of the things that happened. I am not saying that Obama was right for staying at Rev Wrights church for all of those years, because not all African Americans such as myself, who is also an educator in an inner-city neighborhood, agrees with everything Rev Wright said, nor does my church, which is an African American church spurs the statements and connotations that Rev Wright argues.
I feel that Obama was lost because of his racial background, and clung to Wright, because he somehow felt vindicated in relating to frustration he must have felt growing up. I am more removed to believe that Rev Wright, although I have a hard time swallowing this, is working against Obama...Why? Obama never denounced Wright at first...but in the same breathe, Rev Wright understood the political position Obama was in, and he should had been the Pastor/Leader that he was, and pick and chose the right time to battle the media and press, if he ever really cared about Obama?
If Wright does have financial problems, and this benefits him, as he mentioned he has a book coming out, then this would all seem in perspective for him, after all, there are pictures of Rev Wright and Bill Clinton back in 1992, when Wright and others came to the defense of Bill Clinton during the Lewinsky scandals.http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/03/20/p
Posted by: ThatBKChick | April 29, 2008 5:43 PM
Bill and Hillary sought counsel from Jeremiah Wright in 1998 during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. So does that mean that Rev. Wright speaks for the Clintons as well?
Also, why is it that so many posters on this page are so gripped with the fear that if Sen. Obama becomes president, terrorists will seize control of our country? If that is the line of thinking one wants to use, then we all should seriously call into question President Bush's close ties with the Bin Laden family. It's funny how Sen. Obama is being so sharply criticized over a couple of sound bites from sermons his pastor made and for having a middle name which is an extremely common name in the Muslim world but no one is bringing up George Bush's direct ties to the most wanted terrorist in the world and his family.
Things that make you go hmmm.....

This would be the turn of the screw, or biblical terms, the kiss of Judas?
Although I am an African American, and I used to support Clinton, until I heard about their dealings with Daddy Bush and Caryle Group etc, I support Obama because he is the better candidate between the Clintons (AGAIN) or McCain (Little Bush) and I believe that Rev Wright should defend himself at some point , one cannot wonder about the timing? Rev Wright had several weeks before Clinton's victory in PA, and he could had waited in November to speak out about racial injustices that still exist in this country today. But you have to look at the context of how this travesty has rocked Obama, in the most personal way. I am sure he is hurt, but, beyond feelings...let's look at why I feel this is true.
"Shortly before he rose to deliver his rambling, angry, sarcastic remarks at the National Press Club Monday, Wright sat next to, and chatted with, Barbara Reynolds.
A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity. (She is an ordained minister).
It also turns out that Reynolds - introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club "who organized" the event - is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter" SOURCE:(talkingpointsmemo.com).
It is most definately possible, that the Clintons are behind this because the context of how the National Press Conference was organized by avid Clinton supporter for Rev Wright, and unfortunately for Obama the Rev Wright was not the right person for Obama to forge or continue to forge a mentor/spiritual relationship with EVER! SMDH!

You should hear what my pastor says, and I am white and educated. Thanks that he is not running for office, but I still attend church there. I take what I believe, and am smart enough to ignore the rest.
Rev. Wright is not Obama or Clinton. Obama has already said, "he does not speak for me". What else do you want him to say.
If the super delegates are smart, this convention is going to make history. Obama or Clinton will not be the nominee.

Sorry for such a Long Post...BUT THIS IS POWERFUL...Let's kill all of the rheotoric and show the world the power of Jesus Christ!
To all Obama supporters and those who love the Lord....The Lord, Jesus Christ who governs the entire world, including the U.S.A. I received the attached email and it's a prayer chain going across the world for Mr. Barak Obama....it's very powerful....I have copied it from my email, cut and pasted it here for you all to read.....I suggest that you do the same....because prayer can really change things and what I see happening right now is an outright attack by the pure devil himself!!! Ever since Mr. Obama stated to the world and acknowledged that he prays to the Lord "Jesus Christ" every day, he has been under the very attack of the devil himself/herself....He just didn't say to God, He said he prays to "Jesus Christ" and the bible says that "...every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord...." Send this email to all that you know so that the Lord can cover this young man with the blood of Jesus Christ so these types of swiftboat attacks can continue to roll off this young man's sleeve! Praise the Lord!
Reverend Wright had every right to defend himself against the horrible sound bites and outrageous attacks on his character. However, it's not what you do; it's how you do it. Up until yesterday I, like Barak Obama felt that the Rev Wright had the absolute right to speak out against the assassination of his character that the Clintonians and the Republicans have bestowed upon him. However as of yesterday, I question the Rev. Wright's motive. He could have done this in a less defiant, more sophisticated and intellectual manner in which he engaged his enemies in a conversation discussing all of the issues that were at hand, because in all fairness, Rev. Wright had some very valid serious points. Instead it seems that the choice made was one that is now being allowed to drag a great viable Presidential candidate down the gutter with him leaving open a very large wound that he knew very well would be hard to close. That's called vengeance! It seems to me that every since the day that Obama acknowledged and admitted that he prayed to the Lord Jesus Christ everyday, the pure devil has been chasing his tail, throwing every arrow, every stick and shooting every bullet to literally destroy him and eventually take him down along with the chances of ever being the President of the United States. That just goes to show how much power is in the name of "Jesus Christ" that those enemies of the Lord will rise up against anyone who loves the Lord and confesses "Jesus Christ" is Lord! But I am here to tell you that there's a prayer chain which has since yesterday been going around that many people in the nation is holding Barack up and asking the Lord, Jesus Christ to cover Barak Obama with the blood of Jesus, that no enemy and no devil in hell will tear him down. If it's the Lord's will for this man to be the President of the United States and to bring about Peace and change to this country, then the Lord's will SHALL be DONE! Just so it is written, Just so it shall be done! And for all those folks, the Clintons, The McCain's, and yes even the Honorable Rev. Wright....the bible says, "vengeance is mine thus sayeth the Lord"...So we really need to be careful when we go against God's plan. Please keep this prayer chain going, and while doing so let's also stand on God's word and ask that the Lord cover Mr. Barak Obama by his words in Psalms 91:
Psalm 91
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust". Surely he will save you from the folwer's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you make the Most High your dwelling--even the LORD, who is my refuge-then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his ANGELS concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. "Because he loves me, "says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation! AMEN...Praise his Holy Name!

and also i've met obama on 4 seperate occasions and i can honestly say he never came off as a politician, just a really concerned guy who wanted to do something about the way the world works...and if you jump on him for that then there's no purpose for democratic politics just stick with the almighty bush regime for the next 100 years lol...its funny to me because only people with real problems understand why all of these issues are just a diversion away from the fact that the political system isnt improving ANY of our lives currently...

Her is a Black theologian's essay on Black Liberation Theology:
Black Liberation Is Marxist Liberation
Black Liberation Is Marxist Liberation
By Anthony B. Bradley
One of the pillars of Obama's home church, Trinity United Church of Christ, is "economic parity." On the website, Trinity claims that God is not pleased with "America's economic mal-distribution." Among all of controversial comments by Jeremiah Wright the idea of massive wealth redistribution is the most alarming. The code language "economic parity" and references to "mal-distribution" is nothing more than channeling the twisted economic views of Karl Marx. Black liberation theologians have explicitly stated a preference for Marxism as an ethical framework for the black church because Marxist thought is predicated on a system of oppressor class (whites) versus victim class (blacks).
Black Liberation theologians James Cone and Cornel West have worked diligently to embed Marxist thought into the black church since the 1970s. For Cone, Marxism best addressed remedies to the condition of Blacks as victims of White oppression. In For My People, Cone explains that "the Christian faith does not possess in its nature the means for analyzing the structure of capitalism. Marxism as a tool of social analysis can disclose the gap between appearance and reality, and thereby help Christians to see how things really are."
In God of the Oppressed, Cone said that Marx's chief contribution is "his disclosure of the ideological character of bourgeois thought, indicating the connections between the 'ruling material force of society' and the 'ruling intellectual' force." Marx's thought is useful and attractive to Cone because it allows Black theologians to critique racism in America on the basis of power and revolution.
For Cone, integrating Marx into Black theology helps theologians see just how much social perceptions determine theological questions and conclusions. Moreover, these questions and answers are "largely a reflection of the material condition of a given society."
In 1979, Cornel West offered a critical integration of Marxism and Black theology in his essay, "Black Theology and Marxist Thought" because of the shared human experience of oppressed peoples as victims. West sees a strong correlation between Black theology and Marxist thought because "both focus on the plight of the exploited, oppressed and degraded peoples of the world, their relative powerlessness and possible empowerment." This common focus prompts West to call for "a serious dialogue between Black theologians and Marxist thinkers"--a dialogue that centers on the possibility of "mutually arrived-at political action."
In his book Prophesy Deliverance, West believes that by working together, Marxists and Black theologians can spearhead much-needed social change for those who are victims of oppression. He appreciates Marxism for its "notions of class struggle, social contradictions, historical specificity, and dialectical developments in history" that explain the role of power and wealth in bourgeois capitalist societies. A common perspective among Marxist thinkers is that bourgeois capitalism creates and perpetuates ruling-class domination--which, for Black theologians in America, means the domination and victimization of Blacks by Whites. American has been over run by "White racism within mainstream establishment churches and religious agencies," writes West.
Perhaps it is the Marxism imbedded in Obama's attending Trinity Church that should raise red flags. "Economic parity" and "distribution" language implies things like government-coerced wealth redistribution, perpetual minimum wage increases, government subsidized health care for all, and the like. One of the priorities listed on Obama's campaign website reads, "Obama will protect tax cuts for poor and middle class families, but he will reverse most of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest taxpayers."
Black Liberation Theology, originally intended to help the black community, may have actually hurt many blacks by promoting racial tension, victimology, and Marxism which ultimately leads to more oppression. As the failed "War on Poverty" has exposed, the best way to keep the blacks perpetually enslaved to government as "daddy" is to preach victimology, Marxism, and seduce blacks into thinking that upward mobility is someone else's responsibility in a free society.
Anthony B. Bradley is a research fellow at the Acton Institute, and assistant professor of theology at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. His PhD dissertation is titled, "Victimology in Black Liberation Theology."

"The two democratic front runners have been run into the ground by people like the above poster."
Utter nonsense - I first voted for HC, it was the first time I felt hope when she took NH. She has taken this campaign into the gutter with the hysterical 'say anything, do anything tactics'. BO has not gone there, and of the two now, he would be my choice.
My comment was on the so-called Rev. Wright, one of 'his own', supposed friend and pastor, being vindictive and nasty and trying to run BO's campaign into the ground. He's one mean SOB.

Barack Obama's campaign manager Axelrod conceived the Pastor Wright rehab tour. That comes from multiple reliable sources. I thought that strategy was a loser and I still think so. Obama and Axelrod see it differently. According to multiple sources Obama's camp want Pastor Wright to "energize" the Black churches and the militant Black factions in the inner cities. Hence, Obama through the Al Sharpton radio show and similar platforms have tried to transfer the argument that an attack on Wright's divisive and racist hateful rants is an attack on all Black churches. Why? Because that argument allows Obama to speck as a "politician" and claim that Wright speaks for himself, while Obama benefits from the racists claims that the U S Government created aids to kill Blacks. All decent Americans hve to stand up and repudiate the Obama candidacy as a racist based candidacy unless Obama totally repudiates Wright and the ideology, which has been frequently mischaracterized as "Black Liberation Theology" of Wright and Trinity UCC _ - "theology" based on the hateful teachings of James Cone, who like Wright is a former Black Muslim, who has gamed Black Christianity for personal fame and huge profits. Black Liberation Theology is a cancer visited on Blacks in America by slick impostors like Wright who is having a retirement residence in an exclusive White neighbourhood, not in the Trinity UCC neighbourhood.
"BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY" OF REV. WRIGHT AND THE TRINITY UCC IS THE IDEOLOGY THAT HAS BEEN EMBRACED BY BARACK OBAMA, WHO HAS REFUSED TO REPUDIATE WRIGHT OR THE IDEOLOGY OF WRIGHT. WRIGHT OPENLY PROCLAIMED THE THEOLOGY AND IDEOLOGY OF JAMES CONE IS THE THEOLOGY OF TRINITY UCC AT LEAST SIX TIMES IN INCESSANTLY REFERRING TO THE THEOLOGY OF JAMES CONE WHEN SPEAKING TO SEAN HANNITY IN THE OFTEN REPLAYED CABLE INTERVIEW WITH WRIGHT. WRIGHT, ONCE AGAIN, REFERRED TO JAMES CONE IN HIS RECENT BILL MOYERS INTERVIEW. THAT THEOLOGY IS AN AFRO-CENTRIC THEOLOGY. HERE ARE SOME OF JAMES CONE'S IDEOLOGICAL TEACHINGS, WHICH HAVE BEEN MISCHARACTERIZED AS THEOLOGY:
"If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy." (James Cone, quoted in William R Jones, 'Divine Racism," in African-American Religious Thought: An Anthology, ed. Cornel West, Eddie Glaube, 2003.)
James Cone, whom Rev Wright highly admires, goes on further: "Whiteness, as revealed in the history of America, is the expression of what is wrong with man. It is a symbol of man's depravity. God cannot be white even though white churches have portrayed him as white . . . When we can see a people who are controlled by an ideology of whiteness, then we know what reconciliation must mean. The coming of Christ means a denial of what we thought we were. It means destroying the white devil in us. Reconciliation to God means that white people are prepared to deny themselves (whiteness), take up the cross (blackness) and follow Christ (black ghetto)." (James Cone: Black Theology and Black Power, 1997.)
OBAMA'S CHURCH AND WRIGHT CREDIT JAMES CONE AS ITS INSPIRATION AND THE FOUNDER OF THEIR THEOLOGY. CONE WROTE:
"Whiteness, as revealed in the history of America, is the expression of what is wrong with man. It is a symbol of man's depravity. God cannot be white even though white churches have portrayed him as white. The coming of Christ means a denial of what we thought we were. It means destroying the white devil in us. James Cone, Black Theology and Black Power , p.150.
OBAMA CLEVERLY TURNED AN ISSUE ABOUT HIS RELIGIOUS ASSOCIATIONS AND THEOLOGY INTO A DEBATE ON RACE. MOREOVER, THE PRESS WAS APPARENTLY SO BEGUILED BY OBAMA'S MARCH 18 SPEECH THAT NO MEMBER OF THE PRESS WOULD DELVE INTO THE INCONSISTENCIES PRESENTED BY OBAMA THE UNITY CANDIDATE AND OBAMA THE CONGREGANT OF AN AFRO-CENTRIC CHURCH. THAT IDEOLOGY, DISINGENUOUSLY LABELED AS "BLACK LIBERATION THEOLOGY," IS UNDENIABLY DIVISIVE AND RACIST. WHY WOULD A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE EMBRACE SUCH A PSEUDO-CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY? THE IDEOLOGY AND THEOLOGY OF TRINITY UCC IS AKIN TO THE QURAN'S MANY PASSAGES PROCLAIMING ISLAM AS THE ONLY TRUE RELIGION AND PROMOTING DIVISIVENESS WITH OTHER THEOLOGIES. SEE, E.G., QURAN, SURA 5: 51: "O you who believe, do not take certain Jews and Christians as allies; these are allies of one another. Those among you who ally themselves with these belong with them. GOD does not guide the transgressors. "
HERE IS THE ULTIMATE OBAMA QUESTION FOR THE AMERICAN BODY POLITIC: HOW CAN A PROFESSED "CHRISTIAN" WHO IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT ON A PROMISE OF UNITY PROCLAIMING, "THERE ARE NO RED STATES OR BLUE STATES, THERE IS ONLY THE UNITED STATES" BE ANYTHING BUT A SLICK IMPOSTOR IF HE HAS EMBRACED THE IDEOLOGY AND THEOLOGY OF JAMES CONE FOR ALMOST 20 YEARS? ACCORDING TO JAMES CONE AND REV. WRIGHT, "Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy." (James Cone, quoted in William R Jones, 'Divine Racism," in African-American Religious Thought: An Anthology, ed. Cornel West, Eddie Glaube, 2003.)

Post entitled "Clinton Backer "Organized" Wrights Press Club Event"

From todays news:
"Clinton backers who have taken a dislike to Obama have a sharply lower regard for his honesty and ethics than they did last fall, the poll shows. Obama supporters whose view of Clinton has dimmed see her as far less compassionate and refreshing than they did then.
The feelings seem especially widespread among the candidates' strongest supporters:
_About half of Obama's white backers with college degrees have negative views of Clinton. Fewer black Obama supporters dislike Clinton but their numbers have grown faster, more than doubling during the period to 33 percent.
_Among Clinton's supporters, Obama is disliked by nearly half the whites who have not gone beyond high school, a near doubling since November. Four in 10 white women backing her have unfavorable views of Obama."
Keep up the "good work". Are you sure you're not working for the republicans??

Democrats can't stand peace among themselves. Bickering is why most presidents have been Republican since 1897.
Posted by: | April 29, 2008 1:11 PM
From today's poll news:
Those Obama backers who don't like Clinton say they would vote for Republican candidate John McCain over her by a two-to-one margin, with many undecided.
The Clinton backers with unfavorable views of Obama say they would vote for McCain over him by nearly three-to-one, though many haven't made up their minds.

Half the democrats hate Clinton with a passion. Some will vote for McCain or stay at home as they have said. The democrats have aired the faults of their canditates ad nauseum and continue to do so.
The republicans will vote for McCain. McCain is a shoo in now, and all of you know it. Keep up the "good work".

Answer this if our "First Black President" cared somuch for us, why did he support and continues to support NAFTA. The 3:00a.m. did come. It came from the President of Rhwanda, asking President Clinton to send Amerian Troops to entervene in the civil war.
Clinton's response was that "Americans have no interest in the incident and did not considerate that important. 800,000 blacks were slaughtered. Bet this, if 800,000 jews were left to be slaughtered, Bill Clinton could not live among them.

Oh dear, I see this topic has brought out the Borat apologists in full force, spewing the usual rabid responses. I am not familiar with Chicago, but I would venture a guess that there must be many AA churches in and around the city. The salient point is that Obambi chose to "worship" at this church, with this pastor. If Obama did not agree with the pastor, he could have left the church and attended one that was more in accord with his personal belief - that is what most rational people would do. So, the reason Rev Wright is relevant in relation to Obama's election campaign is because it goes to the heart of Obama's much vaunted judgment. We enjoy freedom of speech - if Rev Wright gets off on accusing the govt of inventing AIDS to kill AA's, that's up to him, but it's equally true that each and every one of us has a right not to listen - Obama should have left. He tells us he is the great uniter, a man who can affect change - I would be more inclined to believe this claim if there was a shred of evidence that he had attempted to change the rhetoric of his pastor and guide his church towards a theology that embraced unity rather than division.

Just tell them what they want to hear!
Once you get back behind closed doors, you can laugh at them & keep telling yourself how you have them bamboozled into their vote
Keep saying the same things over & over without having any clue, idea or your own thought of HOW you are going to do what you keep telling them
buy eggs on the governments tab
Dont forget, you still havent used thw race card yet
These are bitter people you're talking to, just use some fancy language you learned at HARLEM; err, HARVARD and they wont know the difference

Dave, thanks for posting that. I see there are very few decent people on here. And he Clinton's Pastor seems to be very decent and open-minded. There are alot of racist remarks being made. As Rev. Wright stated, Obama is disassociating himself from certain comments he made so that he can be elected, but he didn't disassociate himself from Rev. Wright.

I never heard of Bill Clinton until he ran for office and became president although I guess he was the governor of Arkansas....but I did not follow what was going on in Arkansas.
President Clinton did cause some disgrace in the white house that he denied for sometime........but the past is past and can not be undone.
I never heard of Hillary before she became the wife of the President and all of the things that happened while she was his wife did bring her into the news a lot more....along with her health care she tried.
Obama is also a new name to me but I have no negative things to say about him. I do not know him.
Jeremiah Wright also has become a new name and I think he has a right to defend what people think of him but his timing does seem strange. Is he angry with Obama?
Who of use ever had a slave or a maid and who of us was a member of the KKK. This was many years ago and I studied it from history books and that is what it is HISTORY.
Now lets get back to issues. Did anyone know that president Bush put into law that in 2009 if Medicare has spent X number of dollars that then medicare will pay 45%. Is this not more important to us. This law needs stopped by the new officials of the government. Medicare pays 80% now but later would pay 45%. People are you ready to go broke and see them privitize Medicare. Get on the horn and do something about writing the people in office and address this situation.
In the meantime lets get back to what the campaign is about. In reading all of this rherotic and listening to Wright the government is going on with business that will effect our lives.

It is truly sad that this much attention is given to Rev. Wright. This is an effort to negate Senator Obama. This country is still seeing color and they would prefer incompetent white females over competent males. This is Americas legacy..... If Obama is kicked to the curb by the Democrats...I will vote for McCain.
I will encourage all of my African American friends living in America to vote for McCain because if that is the way you play politics then be prepared to fix the voting machines.
Posted by: Laveta | April 29, 2008 10:50 AM
What exactly did Rev. Wright say that was racist?
Listen to Rev. Wrights entire message and then come back and comment. Many of you are truly showing your bigotry and ignorance.
People refusing to vote for Obama based on what his Pastor says had no intention on voting for Obama anyway.
If someone who has actually served in the US military, lived through segrgation, and experienced discrimination doesnt have a right to question the government and the USA's actions and call them out on their nonsense..who does?

You just have to read some of the postings on this board (many that go off on tangents other than Rev Wright, many that are offensive and purely fantasy) and you have to ask yourself, is Rev. Wright the one who is off the wall or is it those hear who malign and hate others
Posted by: nclwtk | April 29, 2008 10:38 AM
Rev Wright is an egotistical idiot. It is obvious that someone probably the clintons or one of their supporters put him up to this. Also, attending a specific church has much more to do with the pastor, so Obama could have stayed in that church for a million years like many of us do and not agree with everything that our pastor says. Obama does not owe any explanation for rev wright, my focus is on the economy and getting the US back in shape. These distractions are just that distractions. The media is focusing on the idiot Wright and I have not heard anything about the soilders being killed in Iraq. I hope Obama does not even mention Wright because i am tired of seeing that opportunist.Obama is the candidate,he is the one who can briong us together. He is connected to both white and black, because he is biracial and that is important. If they steal this nomination from Barack, my family and friends are voting for McCain.

I am an ardent supporter of Senator Obama and I get amused when people get agitated by the use of his middle name Hussein, and some use it to ridicule him.
I am a Christian and for the life of me cannot understand why it is viewed so negatively to be a Muslim in America. Is Islam not a religion like others??
Sure some Moslems were responsible for September 11 and other atrocities. But is it fair to paint millions of other innocent Muslims with the same brush?? Christians have committed crimes and atrocities too but are Christians painted with the same brush??
If Senator Obama wants to bring real change in America one of the things he should start with is tackling head on this irrational fear of Islam in America.
Democracy means accepting other views--and that includes religion.
I for one think he should proudly start using his middle name Hussein. Now that will be real change we can believe in.
Watching in Africa.....

The Democrats lost Congress in the 1990s under a much touted Clinton administration
Hillary created a wedge among the Democrats in Congress in the 1990s
President Clinton SLEPT with 19-year-old interns, for heavens sake! in the 1990s
Clintons disgraced the White House with sex scandals in the 1990s!
The Clintons brought NAFTA and China in the US market in the 1990s
America became weak in the 1990s because Clinton would not deter Pakistan and India from obtaining nuclear weapons!
Clinton let bin Laden go free when he had actionable intelligence to take him out in the 1990s - he later blamed President Bush for that!
So, What kind of leadership can we expect from another Clinton? Rubbish!
HILLARY VOTED FOR THE WAR IN IRAQ!
AND WHAT ABOUT HILLARY CLINTON lying about being under sniper fire in Bosnia in the 1990s?
Hillary spreading HATE about MoveOn.org!!!

you'd rather be inspired than be safe? you'd rather be inspired (and he uses other peoples words to do this - he is no MLK, JFK, Jefferson!) - than have education, health care, national security.
this country has NO TIME for on the job training of a two year freshman senator with a HUGE EGO. this inspiration immaturity is so pathetic.
flower children? wake up.
older americans have been there and done that. jimmy carter was the result. a do nothing with a good heart. doesn't fill the shoes.
obama is a no one and a do nothing. his resume is empty. he's an american idol rock star winner - but not qualified for this job.
turn your american idol show off - this is a presidential election.
the freaking free world. he is a two year freshman senator who won in against a weak republican in black chicago.
get a grip. grow up. vote responsibly - for an adult.

I write from Canada, and i thought hat Americans, were so intelligent especially te White Americans and lookd forward to the day canada will be like the US. Now i have my doubts.
There is no objectivity in your analysis, everyone is pushing an agenda to the detriment of the people. the influential make fear of the unknown such as a Black man becoming a president, or someone negotiating with Hamas to bring peace to the world, a negative, instead of looking at the greater good for US and the whole world.
fortunately, i am not American and cannot vote, however the truth is bitter, and i see from all the comments above that you guys are so bitter that you lack respect for one another.
even the media has an agenda, which is to be profitable and`promote the agenda of there backers,so most times it comes down to the individual to decide.
Between the two candidates hillary and Obama, i will go for Obama. He has inspired me, and his campaign has gone through ups and downs and no one ever thought he was going to get to this point.
I know that when he becomes the president, he will never forsake the grassroot people that got him there. It will be a new dawn in the American history and the whole world.
Being a Female president is nothing new nor historical in the western world. we have had Margret Thatcher and others. But were have you heard of a Black male being the president in the western world.
i look forward to real history being made.

Is anyone surprised that Wrights appearance yesterday at the National Press Club was arranged by a Clinton supporter?
"Shortly before he rose to deliver his rambling, angry, sarcastic remarks at the National Press Club Monday, Wright sat next to, and chatted with, Barbara Reynolds."
"A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity. (She is an ordained minister)."
"It also turns out that Reynolds - introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club "who organized" the event - is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter. ..."

Mr. Obama: "I can no more disown him than I can my white (why did he add that?) grandmother.
He was right. He cannot distance himself - because he called the guy family, and sat, swayed and clapped along to his ranting without ever once trying to "CHANGE" anything in that church.
Blacks everywhere are refuting that this church is like other black churches.
They are disowning Rev Wright.
But in TWENTY YEARS Obama never tried to distance himself from this "family" member - and he never spoke out or walked out or CHANGED his church.
Mr. Obama is a liar.
Plain, bold faced liar.
He'll say anything to anyone anywhere they want to hear.
One day the guy's his spritual mentor
Next day he's a crazy uncle
Then he is family and cannot be disowned
And today he is "just" my pastor
THE ONLY THING MR. OBAMA "CHANGES" IS HIS STORY
HE'S A HOODWINKER
AMERICAN'S ARE TIRED OF HIS MANY VERSIONS
HIS PLASTIC MASKS ARE MELTING OFF AROUND HIM
AND ALL THE SMALL TOWN TYPICAL BITTER WHITE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING CLOSELY
HE IS NOT PRESIDENTIAL
HE IS NOT EVEN DOING HIS FRESHMAN SENATOR JOB
AUDACITY IS A MILD TERM FOR MR. OBAMA'S EGO

The 'reverend' Wright/Wrong may not speak FOR Obama, but Obama has no problem with his speaking TO his two little girls and spewing all that racist, anti-American vitriol. And for Obama to have sat in that pew and supported this 'ministry' for two decades is either stupid, opportunistic, or equally racist and anti-American. We need look no further than Michelle Obama to know which. For shame.

Face it America, Obie is not ready to be President. I think that Rev. Wright knows this too. What Obie has done is used the efforts and works of others like Rev. Wright to push his own ambitions in life. Now that he's where he wants to be he is DISSING all his former contacts...EVEN his WIFE!! Where in the world is Michelle these days??? Maybe she's out shopping Oprah looking for new drapes for the White House. No! He had to tape her mouth shut but he is having one ##$@ of time silencing Uncle Jerry who is PISSED that he is out there pretending to love WHITE AMERICA!!!

SO, MR OBAMA
IF HE DIDN'T SPEAK FOR YOU
WHY DIDN'T YOU SPEAK FOR YOURSELF? WHY DIDN'T YOU SPEAK OUT OR WALK OUT OF THAT CHURCH IN TWENTY YEARS?
IF HE DIDN'T SPEAK FOR YOU WHY DIDN'T YOU TRY TO "CHANGE" THINGS THERE
OR WHY DIDN'T YOU "CHANGE" CHURCHES ?
YOU ARE SUCH A JOKE

The fact that Clinton won the Presidency twice was a HUGE progress for the democrats.
The Republicans are beginning to feel the pressure of the Hillary Clinton rise and started attacking her again.
Compare to Kerry and Gore at least the Clintons have already shown toughness as far as going head to head against the Republican Machine. Yes Bill Clinton didn't have perfect record but he did make HUGE progress on things that matter to the working class of this country by providing them the BEST and VERY PROGRESSIVE ECONOMY that blew away records.
When Bill Clinton left the White House, this country was on target for 3.5 Trillion Surplus but what look what happens 7.5 years later after an unproven leader is elected to the White House--we are now about 9.5 Trillion in the hole.
The next 4-8 is just to important to risk it again on somebody who is inexperienced and untested at best. Hope and Change are good slogans to have but the country needs proof that he knows how to do it and can deliver. Unfortunately for him, there was nothing significant that he had done before to support that.
At best, Obama should be offered a VP position but even that may be too much for him at this time. But for the sake of Party Unity, Hillary may do just that.
Whether the Obama supporters like it or not this nomination had already turned after the Pennsylvania race and there's nothing anybody can do even Jeremiah Wright (hah, hah) to change that.
Predictions:
Hillary wins Indiana by 3-5% and gets really close to low single digits loss in North Carolina. She may even outperform there.
