Gary, Ind., Calls It A Night (Almost)

By Peter Slevin
CROWN POINT, Ind. -- It took half the night, but the counting is nearly done in Lake County, where a long delay in reporting results and a sudden surge for Sen. Barack Obama set tongues wagging and forced local law enforcement figures to defend the protracted vote-counting process.

Shortly after midnight, Lake County elections officials released figures that showed Obama beating Sen. Hillary Clinton here by 11 percentage points, enough to prune Clinton's statewide lead to about 22,000 votes but not enough to overtake her with 99 percent of Indiana's votes now counted.

Elections officials, who took heat on national television for their initial decision to hold all results until absentee and early-voting ballots had been counted, said that roughly 7,000 ballots remained uncounted from turnout that approached 50 percent.

They estimated that a final tally would be available by about 2 a.m. central time.

Lake County Prosecuting Attorney Bernard Carter said the count was "on the up and up and every ballot is being counted."

"There is nothing going on that I would say is improper or not correct," said Carter, an elected official who said he did not endorse Clinton or Obama. Describing his role in an election headquarters still humming with activity after 1 a.m. CST, Carter said in an interview that he is here "to witness and to know first hand what occurred."

Carter said by way of explanation that elections officials were dealing for the first time with early voting. They decided to try to count 11,000 early ballots before releasing any figures, rather than pursuing the usual piecemeal approach.

As a result, Lake County showed a goose egg on election maps as Clinton built a statewide lead.

"That's a decision they made," Carter said. "I had no control over that."

When the Lake County results began to be reported, Obama rolled up big margins in Gary, home to a heavy concentration of black voters who backed the senator from nearby Chicago. Clinton's lead slipped to four percent, then three percent, then two.

Her edge gradually stabilized as more results were reported from a mix of suburban and rural Lake County precincts where the votes were more evenly split.

Sheriff Roy Dominguez, a Clinton supporter, held forth at midnight in the first floor elections headquarters, declaring himself confident that "there is no reason to believe there's anything improper going on."

Mindful of the sudden suspicion in a region whose political history is particularly pungent, Dominguez said of the county workers and volunteers, "They didn't anticipate this type of night."

That is a BLATANT LIE!

When you make a strong statement like that, show us the proof and if you can't prove it, don't make the statement. So, back it up with some concrete evidence please. Otherwise your comment lacks credibility.

Did you ever think that Obama, considering where he was born, would consider Asians different from anyone else?

Posted by: Sharon | May 8, 2008 12:18 AM

I was so sorry to see the post about racism affecting Asians. As a caucasion, frankly, I don't think of you as a minority or as any different than I am. I wouldn't single you out because you are Asian; is that a mistake?

I feel for certain that Obama is already planning on how much of our tax dollars he will spend on AFRICOM if he is president. This is a newly formed command that will give support to over 50 African nations. Please recall that part of his church's doctrine is their allegiance to the African nations. Wake up America and elect a president that puts America before any other nation.

wow..by your logic we should scrap CENTCOM, and stop giving billions in aid, technology and weapons to the Israelis..there is some hidden racism in your statement. I hope you know

American First:

YOU were the one who claimed "the only way people will vote for McCain is if they are die hard GOP". I simply pointed out several other groups who WILL vote for McCain vs. Obama. No need to resort to personal attacks though.

Posted by: JakeD | May 7, 2008 1:31 PM

Hillary won by a measely 2%. I am certain that more than 1% of the population did not show up because they did not have a birth certificate handy to show their credentials. These people are most probably African American voters whose votes would have counted towards Obama. If it weren't for the recent court ruling about presenting a photo id at the election booth, Obama would have clenched the win in Indiana.

Again a win by a margin of only 2% by Clinton, even after throwing the kitchen sink politics of division and extortion by the Clinton campaign at Obama is not a win at all. As for Hillary she is already claiming to be knee deep in debt for her campaign. Why does she want to continue wasting people's hard earned money, when she can't even manage her campaign budget.

This is very pathetic and foolish of her to plan to continue her campaign until the bottom falls off the democratic party. She is like the car in a race track, that is always trailing, but causes an accidentaccident with the leader just before the leader crosses the finish line.

LOL! A Clarification:

I was addressing the following to John A,

Not implying HE had John D's Repressed Fantasies! ;~)

Posted by: RAT-The | May 7, 2008 12:40 PM

Uhhhh, John D,

Sounds like a Slip on YOUR part to me! Got mental Images, do you?

Now for the people not caught up in repressed fantasies-Like John A:

The ISSUE has definitely become the Economy.

However, in my World, MY Economy was destroyed by an inability to Earn a Fair Wage-OR be able to get any of MANY Jobs that NOW REQUIRE Bi-Lingual(Gringo-don't talk like thaaaat, it hurts my Ears!).

Our Economy is Tanking due to Waaaaaayyyyy Too many Wage suppressing Invaders!

We cannot earn enough to maintain the lifestyles we had, because too many People who had NO lifestyle have invaded and are competing with us!

Then, REALIZE; It is an UNFAIR Competition. One the Federal Government was supposed to be there to prevent!

$10/Hr for 50 Hours without Taxes-is $500/Week. $26,000/Year-Take Home!

IF, I agreed to die at $10, I would take home @$7.50!
I'd cost the Employer @$15-17!

That $6 in Taxes, with 10 Million Un-Documented Jobs across the US;

Amounts to OVER $150 BILLION! NOT Collected!

Mitt Romney, UNDERSTANDS THIS! It is simply an EMPLOYMENT ISSUE!

But then, Mitt Romney is a Business Genius/Venture Capitalist/Governor/Executive type of guy!

I Love Money! Then, I can honestly say, I'd love any guy who helped me get some again!

I am NOT Gay, BUT, just as the old joke goes about any Woman having HER price, Wellll.... ;~)

Just curious. Since this column had absolutely nothing to do with Asians - how and why did Asians become so prominent in these blogs?

Posted by: Karol | May 7, 2008 12:35 PM

The comments I have been reading that appears to be coming from Hispanics and Asians about Obama not being concerned about them is nonsense. You will not find one comment made by Obama that favors one race over another. He will try to unite the country. I believe this is about being jealous. It a shame that one minority group has to be jealous of another. Put up a Hispanic or Asian that has similar qualifications as Obama and stresses unity, I will guarantee you, Blacks will support them. How much support would Clarence Thomas get from the Black community if he was running for an office?
None. Yes, we are going to support one of our own if he or she is qualified. After three hundred and ninety nine years, can you blame us from being a little excited?

Posted by: Mel | May 7, 2008 12:16 PM

JakeD,

The Obama supporters have been called just as worse by the Hillary fanatics. Here is the thing, if i have to tell pro-lifers or Independents then that proves my point that they cant think for themselves or are to ignorant to look up what the candidate really stands for. We are a 30 second society, a majority of people in this country would rather treat a 30 second news sound bite as gospel instead of actually researching the info themselves and finding out the truth. If abortion is your #1 priority in this election, then you are to stupid to vote and should stay home. That is what got W elected twice. Not because he was good at anything, a majority of his supporters could only say he was a good christian when asked why the supported him. They just didnt realize this good christian would make them bow down and pray everytime they fill up for 3.50 a gallon.

to the RAT

You are right I note that John McCain is reviving his Immigration stance now that he has locked up the nomination. He seems to be IN YOUR FACE to the conservative base - and wants to make Immigration Reform a great part of his legacy if he wins the White House. This stand is appealing to moderates and cross over voters. He is fighting for the middle ad Hillary attempted to woo the right. John McCain is a small democrat/wolf in Republican clothing. Romney is overly ambitious ... reminds us of Nixon of old ... keep trying until you get it ... but really Romney has to loyalty to McCain.

Juan McAmnesty better WAKE his slightly Senile self up on that one and FAST!

I feel many Americans could very quickly go from supporting McCain/Romney to something like Romney/Powell? very quickly!

Over half of all the Immigrants in this Country are here ILLEGALLY! Turning a BLIND EYE to that, and then mouthing off GARBAGE about "National Security", is even more EMPTY, than the "Suit" they call "Barry Obasama"! :-(

John McCain is NOT the certified Nominee YET! And he better REALIZE, "Barry" Obasama WILL grab La Raza with Bill Richardson on Board!

In Fact, he should be getting ready for it!

This is crazy ... because we are not sure how he might perform in office - one thing is for sure - there will be change - not business as usual. Maybe that is what America needs right now ... Then again, he can always call on cousin Dick Cheney to answer the question "obliterate or not to obliterate?"

It is obvious to me most on this blog have and agenda and dont know history or the facts. For anyone to suggest that if Obama is the nominee the GOP will win the election is ludicrous. How can Obama or Hilliary make the country any worse than W? They cant, only they can make it better. McCain who i would have voted for in 00 is now pandering to the same people that helped destroy him in that election. So the only way people will vote for McCain is if they are die hard GOP, the ones who live in fantasy land, because if they were in the real world, they like the rest of the country and the world would see the disaster the GOP has created the last 7 years....

I'll only state MY bottom line where this election is concerned.

You cannot convince me that a woman marrying a politician does not subscribe to his brand of politics. Not only did she subscribe, she stood by... defended... forgave... accepted... and then put the hat on herself.

I've experienced Bill's brand of politics. I'm not willing to buy that brand again via Hillary.

She can flavor that brand with anything she likes.... but it's still going to be the same old brand in the end.

Sad.

How many here doing their best cursing Clinton are

Oh, and by the way.

What Rudy Clay (Gary) may or may not have done to hold up the votes in Lake County?

We live here. Trust us. He's not smart enough to pull off anything like rigging a vote.

Embarrassing. And THEN to have Rudy and TOM MCDERMOTT (Hammond) on a national news program having ANY sort of debate or discussion regarding ANYTHING is just unforgivable.

I want Obama.

But, Hillary...if you're free after November's elections, I'm sure you could do a better job than either of these two idiots in Lake County Indiana.

God help us.

The fact also is, they campaigned as hard as they could in NC with almost three events to Obamas one. He was running against the whole family as they criss crossed the state and it didn't matter. Hillary's idea that she is the stronger candidate is false. Her kind of BS politics is over. Times have changed and information is to available. You can't lie yourself out of anything anymore with youtube, cell phone cams and so on. Say something and it is abound the world in an hour. I would say if this kind of technology was around in 1992 Bill Clinton would have never been president in the first place. Politics will never be the same again. This was the first presidential race people fully plugged in and we see what happened.

It was unjust what that Mayor up in northern Indiana did to Hillary Clinton.
They knew the vote hours before they announced it---then due only to pressure from the news media did they announce it!!!!!!!!!!!
That Mayor was so hostile with the news reporters. I believe he and Obama had this planned if Obama came close.
Why are Americans so Obama. He sat in a church that preched anti-America for 20 years (are we supposed to believe he and his wife did not listen to the precher)?
Then the stories of his gangster friends help in buying his beautiful home? One of his friends is in jail now? And in his youth he belonged to a group that wanted to bomb the pentagon???????????????
Oh he speaks with a glib and golden tongue (his speech writers are great), but get this man without a script and he is a zombie....
If he wins the Democratic nod --- I will run to the polls to vote for John McCain.
America is somehow under the Obama Spell (the man who speaks beautifully and says "nothing". Empty suit who wife did not really like America until he got in this race.
Sad Day in American Polotics.............

Hillary supporters will cut off their nose to spite their face. They will ensure another Republican president continues America's demise instead of an African-American being elected because of the color of his skin or the frustrations of his black minister. Why in the world would blacks be frustrated in America??? I'm not black and I'm frustrated as h*ll! This country has gone so far down the tubes it's not even just Republicans who have lost their minds and their intellect -- Democrats are the new Republicans! It's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. We have very few intelligent, thoughtful, (truly) God-loving people in this country anymore. It's just a bunch of bitter, judgmental, dumb racists. No wonder we are the laughingstock of the world. Everyone has to develop nuclear weapons because we've got a bunch of redneck racists swarming our own nuclear arsenal. We are in big, big trouble in this country. Who are you people????

Why is everyone randomly talking about racism against Asian Americans?

Anyways, congrats to Obama, our next president WOOOOT

Posted by: TMo | May 7, 2008 9:29 AM

I don't understand what all the talk is about Asian Americans! If you watched and/or listened to Obama give his victory speech in NC you will note that he INCLUDED all Americans (including Asian), so he is NOT a minority only including the black minority! Wake up and listen to what he has said.

Furthermore, I will be very interested to find out what Evan Bayh (D-IN) and Mike Easley (Governor NC) career turns will look like in the future since their "gal" clinton did not produce THE SIGNIFICANT WINS for them as expected! A 2% win in IN is just not good enough; nor is the delegate count of last night! As far as I'm concerned, Bayh and Easley got what they were 'paid for' - a roll in the hay with an old fat cow; not gal!

I'll do everything I can to make sure the uncivilized hordes of Obamaphiles don't get the opportunity to overrun the White House.

Posted by: ichief | May 7, 2008 9:06 AM

To the race trolls trying to trash on Obama in this thread, look at how quickly the Clintons threw blacks under the bus. Given how "close" Bill Clinton was to the black community, that relationship ended real fast, and it wasn't blacks who initiated the breakup or anything of Obama's doing. The Clintons alienated blacks with a series of comments, which goes to show how much the Clintons actually valued black people (vs. just their reliable votes).

If you think that Hillary Clinton will do any more for Hispanics, Asians, or any other race, just wait until it's time for you to be thrown under the bus, too.

Posted by: buzzardist | May 7, 2008 8:57 AM

WTF?,

I agree. How a thread on Gary, Ind., became a discussion of Asian American race is beyond me.

The best I can make of it is a) an Asian American supporting Clinton is venting over race in response to Clinton nearly being push out of the race or b) a freaked out Clinton supporter (of any race) is trying to scare people away from Obama.

Also, OD, the advice that Hispanics and Asian Americans "pick a side" in politics so that they will be heard is tantamount to saying "become a political stereotype to match your racial stereotype." Pigeonholing themselves into one party can be as bad or worse than the situation now. Hispanics in particular are getting quite a lot of attention from parties during the last two or three elections, and Republicans have long played to the Cuban American population in Florida. "Splitting votes" doesn't necessarily mean getting ignored.

Really, though, why weren't Asian Americans given top billing in the campaign and voting in Gary, Ind., (to try to turn this thread back to its real topic)? Well, have you seen the demographics for how few Asian Americans live in Gary, Ind.? In Indiana as a whole?

And if you're complaining that Asian Americans didn't get enough attention in California, then go back in time and ask that question to Clinton. Why didn't she make Asian Americans a strong focus of her efforts there? I don't think Barack Obama is singularly guilty of ignoring Asians, and he is probably less so given his roots in Hawaii and Indonesia and the efforts he made in Hawaii.

Yesterday decided the nomination. The superdelegates have one week to end this thing, and they should.

For Hillary to continue is foolhardy and detrimental to her future in politics. She knows it - did you see that speech last night?

Barack Obama is our nominee. I am thrilled, but I know many are not. It's time to get together and back our nominee. Pundits say this is good for our party, but I just can't get onboard with that thinking - more politics as usual?

Superdelegates: Do something for us, not for your own political interests. Come out for Obama today.

Posted by: Susan | May 7, 2008 8:53 AM

The real America people are coming back to us. The real American people want and will get the respect they deserve, but have lost many, many years ago because of spin tactics. Change is coming and the world is watching and cares. Say goodnight Senator Clinton. You have been obliterated. America is on code Red for the last final hour. It's time for truthful politics and you are not part of this great change. 2008, MAN, and your families are reuniting and fighting the battle side by side at home. Iraq is not the American peoples mistake. The fear factor will not work on the people any longer . May your God Bless you all.

Posted by: Justadad55+ | May 7, 2008 8:42 AM

All I can say is that I am one of the Asian Americans who came here in the late 1960s. I worked hard, never collected any unemployment compensation, never collected welfare and everything I have was a result of working hard to improve my financial lot and that of my family. I do not subscribe to the idea that whatever happened for the last 500 years actually influences what I accomplish as a person. The chances that are afforded to people are theirs to take advantage of, and if they don't, then they cannot blame anyone else but themselves for their failures. I know that there is racism, and as a minority, I am constrained to a glass ceiling, but I MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT I HAVE AND WHAT I CAN GET! If God gave you lemons, then make lemonade!

Posted by: merk1444 | May 7, 2008 8:41 AM

It is dispiriting to see so many racist trolls touting Hillary Clinton. Wasn't Bill the first black President, supposedly? Why do you dis the most loyal faction of the Democratic Party coalition? This was the Clintons' doing, figuring that they could marginalize Obama as the "black" candidate. As that campaign unfolded blacks saw this and flocked to Obama - the trouble is, not enough whites voted for Hillary for her to make the difference. Obama has tried mightily not to make his campaign about race, with no help from his pastor, obviously. He has survived the dirtiest Democratic primary campaign I have ever seen, courtesy of the Clinton clan. If Hillary wants a future in the party she needs to end this thing decently and cease her sick, divisive attacks. You trolls who aren't really Republicans might consider this as well. If you really think that four more years of Republican rule is good for the nation then continue your racist screed. I am a white Obama supporter and I approve this message.

Posted by: Chuck | May 7, 2008 8:33 AM

I am saddened by the fact that some Americans will not vote for Obama because he's black. I thought that this country had surpassed such low-down thinking. My goodness!

Obama speaks the language of the American dream. Hillary Clinton should play fair and go home. The truth is that I wouldn't mind seeing them both on a ticket, but Hillary is so darn selfish that I doubt that she'd follow through for the sake of the Democratic party.

It's a shame that we refer to ourselves as a Christian nation, yet we harbor racism in the core of our hearts. Remember God is not racist!

God bless America!

I didn't write that nonsense by American Citizen!

I have issues with illegal immigration and abuse by businesses paying cash to those workers. If they use false identity of someone else. I don't like those criminal immigration issues.

I do value new people coming to this country becoming citizens within our laws and regulations. If they stay too long on a Visa, they should go home.

Being born in America doesn't make babies American citizens, if their parents aren't. I hate that crash, taking advantage of the 14th Amendment.

I know racism and prejudice exist in our country I've witnessed it, experienced it. It is a heart wrench, psychologically damaging experience. It denies people their natural need to belong and it is always an instinctual defense for those who use referential worth to strip other of their God given humanity. Wright is angry but his speeches as of late have been racist. Why? Because he stereotypes instead of assigning blame to those who have engaged in discriminination (which is a very large number) but does not give any credit to those who share our belief that we are all equal. The cut and paste sermon of Rev. Wright is a tool of blatant racism and anyone who trumpeted how indignant we should be at Wright, should really put a mirror on the pages of our history and notice the hipocrissy of this indignation. The ills of Affirmative Action are a myth, affirmative action never denied the best candidate the job. However, all you have to do is look at the make up of the community, and look at the people working to make people wonder why does the work force does not reflect the diversity found in the community. We couldn't find qualified candidates. Crap, you just didn't find the candidate that looked and shared the same ethnic values you have. I admire Obama for believing in the good in all of us. If he is our next President, it would truly be a triumph for all of us. No one can stop those individuals who God have gifted with talent whether it is in business like Oprah, Yahoo's founder, Speilberg in Hollywood, JLo, or your favorite sport event. I cheered for Kerry Strugg as much as I cheered for Dominique Dawes. It is about working to create a harmonious American family, a place where we don't have to look over our shoulder or second guess ourselves because someone out there less skilled, less talented may use race to bring home the bacon and rob you of your humanity because they are too weak and afraid that they can't control their little utopia, so they rather keep their social settings as simple as their minds are. I enjoy diversity, most people are decendants Irish, English, African, Latin, Asian, Native American the human experience in our country is one of the richest and one aspect of American Life that I feel blessed with. Yes, there are those who engage in discrimination, there are those who control themselves and try to do what they know God wouldn't approve of, and there are those who have transcended beyond that and truly look at others as one of their own regardless of what color of paint you're bringing to the American painting.

People with the inner strength to empower themselves to succeed will achieve their pursuit of hapiness. I have. I have good healthy kids, I know I can go to the doctor of my choice, I have a job I love, I have a nice home and a nice car. Are times challenging, yes. But the fact that I'm not white has nothing to do with it.

It has more to do with policies and business greed that has gone unchecked, and people in government who failed to compromise to deliver a solution to our economic needs. I love animals and I love the forest, I love people too. People need to eat and our children are entitled to the chance of improving their standard of living. We can get to the oil in Alaska responsibly, we can get the coal of Montana and W. Virginia responsibly, we can do this with little harm to the environment. To leave an area pristine forever is not good policy. Pristine belongs in Mars, on earth people have to eat. I support Senator Obama. I'm lucky this time around all the candidates are social liberals. We haven't seen a fiscally conservative president since Bill Clinton. The war in Iraq would have been over with if we would have kept our troop strength of the Reagan years. Our troops are dying out there, regardless of race. Why do they come to the States to a top notch Army Hospital with rats, and barracks with dysfunctional toilets. Why do I have to pick up the brains of my (who happens to be white, for all those who think white people got it made) buddy because after he came back from Iraq he blew his brains a few months after? Why do I have to be the one to play dad and husband to his family, because he did not receive proper psych care? How many tours do our young men and women have to serve? Are we going to keep sending the same people over until they drop dead and lose everything they have. Are we doing everything we politically can to bring stability. To reduce our troops and giving the duties of fighting our wars to private contractors has been a disastrous choice and it has to change. Nothing can compare to the ability and true patriotism to our women and men in uniform. They know how to get the job done.

Really. Who did you vote for that put America in this position we're in now? GOP has done well for our country? In 8 years we have fallen this far?

No control of OPEC and we started a war in the Middle East twice! McCain recently said the first Gulf war was about oil. Oil in Kuwait.

Weapons of mass destruction disproved, so the Iraq war was about oil too. Taking it from Saddam. Cheney said our soldiers would be hailed as hero's and it would be easy.

You will vote for McCain over Obama to continue our devauled money, poor image and wars we can't afford struggling financially times?

I reject racists think they will control this election reducing Obama to skin color.

operation chaos was in full effect here in Indiana yesterday my friends I know for a full fact :] and she barley squeeked by..
If she keeps this going it will be interesting to see how the other democrats react

With all the hype about the Obama win, he still won by the support of blacks. That is his base and it will continue to be his base. He is not trusted by the average white voter and they WILL NOT vote for him.

To get an idea of what an Obama administration will look like, just look at Gary, Indiana, or just about any area, whether it's a country or a city that is controlled by blacks---total chaos and incompetence. Call it racist but having seen it up close in Philadelphia, I know it as reality. The current mayor seems to be much more organized that the ones in the past, but we'll see at time goes on whether he is different.

We will be a third world country if Obama is elected president.

It's amazing to me to see how many people who are'nt originally from here comment on our culture in America. I've never seen or heard of such disrespect. Try going over to China flying an american flag in front of your buisness or home. Not to mention we have people over here from other countries protesting and demanding rights. I wish the government and the American people would wake-up and see the real destruction of OUR great country. Anytime a non-citizen can have a say in my countries policies and proceedures it's a sad day in America. Meanwhile the real citizens of this country are facing financial crisis at an all time high. Job lay-offs, mortage scandals, GAS prices, health care. And as far as racism goes NO-One can begin to understand 500 yrs of slavery and torment and then to have it ignored or told to not speak about it is perposturous. Funny how Latins and Asians come here and want to reep the benefits that blacks fought tooth and nail to put in place but yet can fix their mouths to speak such ignorance and hatred toward blacks. I've seen very few of either groups marching when we have marches about injustices in America. My suggestion to both parties is to first get your facts straight about the plight of blacks in America, Then become active in the fight for "Justice For All"! Dr.Martin L. King said many years ago that an injustice for one is an injustice for all. To this very day even with the 40 year anniversary death of DR.MLK his vision was for oneday to see a different and united country of peace. I'm sure he's smiling right now to know that due to his works a black-man is even running for President and could stand a chance to win. For all the ney sayers go back to YOUR coutries ours works just fine w/o the free-riders.

>The Democratic Party rules need to be changed.

No they don't, Michigan and Florida should have participated. States pay for Primary's and some can't afford it in years when legislators have to cut budgets.

Florida Democratic party couldn't afford a primary separate from Republicans.

Republicans legislators there moved up the primary date for themselves causing that problem on the Democratic party primary calendar.

Some states that had caucus events enjoyed the process. The Party pays for a caucus.

Hillary's complaint, she didn't win those, put her far behind in delegates on Super Tuesday. She's stopped trying to win caucus events but they count!

Some states have "anybody" can vote is the problem. No Registered Republicans should be voting in the Democratic primary. Independents should be allowed.

To the complainers of racism in America, it happens. Hillary has used it to suggest Obama could be Muslim, her campaign said. They distributed Obama trying on Kenya traditional clothing like any politican could be put in if they visit the Country.

"Far as I know" were Hillary's words when asked if Obama was Christian.

Obama was hammered for belonging to a Christian Church 20 years that Rev. Wright ran.

Hillary had Obama denounce Farrakhan and he's never said a positive thing about that guy. Farrakhan was praised by Bill Clinton in the 90's for the Million Man March to Washington. Rev. Wright was invited to Clinton's Prayer Breakfast after his Monica controversies.

Farrakhan was invited to Philadelphia by Gov. Ed Rendell when he was Mayor there in the 90's, praised him as a leader.

Rezko helped Obama?

Norman HSU gave $850,000 dollars to Hillary campaign and threw fund raisers party's while he was a fugitive.

William Ayers, 60's terrorist? He lived down the block from Obama.

Bill Clinton pardoned two women from his group in the 90's. Hillary was involved with who Bill pardoned!

It's too bad when Clinton's campaign put out that statement,

"Her base of support includes women, Hispanics, seniors, Catholics, middle and low income Americans, and rural, suburban and urban voters," the former DNC party leaders wrote on her behalf.

Asians weren't designated special Hispanics!

Racism or realism, Hillary's campaign says Hispanics won't vote for a black candidate, proud of that fact too.

Somehow Hillary is losing with all her advantages among races, women and working class. She's won more guns and religious minded.

She's got the vote from those listening to Rush Limbaugh and still behind.

Posted by: Marks | May 7, 2008 6:15 AM

Mexican President, American Whites typically have a turnout of about 55% in presidential elections, Blacks a turnout of 45%, and Hispanics a turnout of about 35%. That is one reason why Hispanics are relatively ignored.

If you don't deliver votes in return, you're unlikely to get politicians' attention.

Also, both Hispanics and Asian-Americans split their vote. Both groups opted 44% for Bush in 2004.

The fact that they're split means that pleasing one half of them is likely to upset the other. Measures that please newly-arrived Mexicans are liable to upset well-established Cubans, for example. Since they don't form a block, they carry less political weight.

Compare this to Blacks. 88% of them voted for Kerry 2004. What this means is that their wishes and interests get completely ignored by the Republican Party, but are vital to the Democratic Party which would be completely screwed without their support.

So the best way for Hispanics and Asian-Americans to get their voices heard would be to pick a side, rather than be divided and thus conquered by the political system. And also, in the case of Hispanics, they might consider bothering to turn up at the polling station.

Racism is a potent force in the US, but not so potent as to come between and politician and a supporting vote. It would be pretty paranoid to think that the establishment prefers Blacks to Hispanics or Asians for racist reasons.

If either group made themselves as useful to the Democratic party as Blacks have done, they'd find their opinions a lot more eagerly courted, in my opinion.

Obama will IMPLODE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: | May 7, 2008 6:03 AM

This nutty mayor from Gary showed how inept and corrupt he must be. There was HANKY PANKY going on to rig the elections , just like all the caucuses Obama has "won" . Hillary should keep fighting on. Or else I will be a "McCain Democrat" with pride....

God bless the good people of Indiana and North Carolina. The witch is dead!
I'm sure the rural people who were so avidly courted by Bill Clinton weren't fooled by his phony "folksy" charm.

Post-North Carolina Haiku based on the reality of today:

-------On May 6 he won-------

In response, to the comments about the racism toward Asian Americans. Yes, it exists and it is ignored. It took African Americans more confrontational approaches to have their issues addressed by mainstream America.
While, I'm not an advocate of violence, I have to admit, white people do start noticing when you start burning stuff to the ground.

Posted by: Underworld | May 7, 2008 5:37 AM

If we were using the Republican rules, Hillary Clinton would be up in delegates.

Posted by: Mansfield | May 7, 2008 5:34 AM

The Democratic Party rules need to be changed. This is absolutely ridiculous. We should take a page from the Republicans playbook and adopt their party rules when it comes to choosing our candidate.

Posted by: Idaho Voter | May 7, 2008 5:33 AM

I think the VT shootings were the result of an unstable Asian kid's latent reaction to racism that Asian Americans face in society and pop culture.
It is true that racism toward Asian Americans is ignored. In fact, Asian Americans in general are ignored. Unfortunately even the lives lost in Virginia Tech were in vain because America still has not woken up to racism.

Posted by: Virginia Dare | May 7, 2008 5:30 AM

Lets face it the Democratic Party is fractured beyond repair. The reason behind the fracture is the racist double-speak of Obama, naive latte-liberal elites who are out of touch with America and what is in America's best interest, and the media who are blindly cheerleading and feeding garbage, biased news to the masses.

The change is America is definitely taking a dramatic down-ward spiral, and we're not taking the right steps to correct ourselves. America is changing for the worse.

What has not changed is, the elites are manipulating the masses.

re lake county ..the UNINFORMED would believe somehow a conspiracy lurks in the south eastern suburbs of chicago...
yet it is not the mayor or the sheriff or the prosecutor who controlls the election process that is done by party poll workers who decide how to handle huge unprecedented numbers of ballots.
the rush effect is obvious and openly discussed tx ohio penn all had open primarys while tx had a fire wall caucus rush voters were not willing to wait around to caucus so only real democrats did caucus thus obama won.
in N.C. only democrats can vote thus you see a true picture of the democratic PARTY.
the clinton campaign has been riding on smoke and mirriors for quite a while now but as you can see the queen is naked.

Posted by: john freeman | May 7, 2008 5:18 AM

Three things were accomplished by deliberately delaying the release of these results.
1) Hillary was prevented from delivering a more enthusiastic victory speech.
2) CNN and probably some other networks talked for more than 2 hours on the "What if she loses?" scenario.
3) Any chance of the Indiana result making the newspaper deadline for the Eastern states, was obliterated.

This tampering on the part of a pro Obama mayor could well call into question not only the results in that particular county but many of the lop sided, inner city votes.

Hard to believe that these two candidates are in the same party.

Posted by: Jim Lad | May 7, 2008 4:46 AM

Notwithstanding, Clinton's determination to take the race all the way to the convention, unless there is some bombshell (that really matters to the media and liberal elites), I think Clinton's campaign is about done.

Also, I understand the frustration that Asian Americans feel. If you really want change, do something - organize a boycott, do a march on Washington. I believe blacks and latinos have both done a march, but I haven't seen an Asian march. And I agree, Obama hasn't done much to reach out to Asian Americans or Latinos. It's not surprising that these groups voted overwhelmingly for Hillary. And Obama claims to be a uniter. If he wants to win the general election, he's going to need the support of these groups, especially the Latinos. If Obama really wants to be a leader of 21st America, Obama needs to walk the talk and really start uniting the country rather than putting up a facade and continuing to support the marginalization of Americans.

Posted by: Steve P | May 7, 2008 4:04 AM

Its not just white america that needs to address racism toward Asian Americans.

Every ethnic group needs to address racism toward other groups.

Black people are just as racist as any other group.

Let me tell you why I am not voting for Obama.

OBAMA HAS IGNORED MINORITIES THAT AREN'T BLACK.

I refuse to support a minority leader who ignores other minorities, in fact I STRONGLY IMPLORE ALL AMERICANS WHO AREN'T BLATANTLY RACIST TO DO EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO KEEP OBAMA OUT OF POWER.

Obama will set race relations back 40 years. He refuses to recognize other minorities, and racism toward Latinos and Asian Americans is alive and well.

You cannot unite a country by continuing to ignore Americans based on the color of their skin and effectively endorsing the marginalization of these groups.

IF YOU BELIEVE IN A TRULY MULTICULTURAL AMERICA, VOTE FOR ANYONE BUT OBAMA.

Posted by: Mexican President | May 7, 2008 3:59 AM

Every group experiences racism; however, when it happens to Asian Americans it largely goes ignored.

White Americans need to understand that racism toward one group is racism toward all groups.

Posted by: Doug Stasny | May 7, 2008 3:53 AM

It's absolutely ridiculous how the racism toward Asian Americans is ignored in this country.

That's why I believe that, as repugnant as it may seem, some good old fashioned lack of perspective may do Asians good.

After all, we've spent the entire post-WW2 period being a model minority, and what has it gotten us? Ridicule in popular culture, quotas in school admissions, and blatant indifference from the two major political parties.

Meanwhile, more activist minorities rule popular culture, benefit (sort of--long discussion possible here) from affirmative action and government contracts, and are courted heavily by Democrats and Republicans alike.

We're supposed to be smart, but it sure seems like we're being dumb.

Hillary's so called victory speech in Indiana was pure arrogance, the final statistics will be interesting, did Women voters, once Hillary's core safe vote turn away from her, 2% win was no victory to shout about. CBS need to look at themselves and the 6% win call!

North Carolina was a disaster for Hillary much larger gay 14% than her campaign predicted, now is the time for Hillary to GO! and that is HOME and take Bill with her, forget 2012 as well Hillary.
