Cindy McCain Divests $2 Million with Sudan Ties

Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) (Associated Press)
By Michael D. Shear
Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential candidate John McCain, on Wednesday divested herself of $2 million in mutual funds that invested in Sudan after inquiries from a news organization.
Sen. John McCain has called for international sanctions against the Sudanese government for killings in Darfur. The Associated Press reported that his wife sold the mutual funds -- American Funds Europacific Growth fund and American Funds Capital World Growth and Income fund. Both funds have holdings in companies that operate in Sudan.
Cindy McCain's decision to sell the investments come after several other presidential candidates, including Democrat Barack Obama, last year chose to divest of Sudan-related stocks and mutual funds. Her investments in the mutual funds are listed on disclosure forms McCain is required to file as a senator and candidate.

Cindy McCain's father was involved with the Mob, and people who were implicated in the murder of reporter Don Bolles. What is she trying to hide?

Have you people ever even invested in a mutual fund? You all could be invested in a Sudan-related company right now as I type this and probably not even know it.

Republicans never knownly do anything wrong. It's just another one of those "one time mistakes" we hear about several times a day.

Cindy also owns a lot of stock in the voting machine companies.
I wonder why they don't want that public?

Before too many more people get all hot and bothered, consider the funds she just sold: American Funds EuroPac and CapWorld. These just happen to be two of the largest international and global funds out there and are in many, many 401(k)'s etc. They look out for the fund owners by keeping expenses lower than average, using a team based approach (no one glory hound to make or break the fund), and they own 100's of stocks. If you want to be pure and holy I suggest burying your money in the backyard or giving it to the poor.

so she got caught and says she divested....but we won't ever really know because the beer baroness says she will NEVER release her tax recpords. McCain could be receiving direct payments from foreaign governments and we will NEVER know.

Yes, all of us who have control over our mutual funds, and the key is control, should divest in ALL companies that do business in Sudan and China. Of course, thre certainly will be less money to be made, but we cannot say we are against rape, maham, murder, and all the those vile isses when its politically expediant to do so, then receive a check in tha mail from the very policies we critisize. So yes, if you have a policy that you know invests in any country or company that supports genocide...divest. The problem is that we Americans tend to really value the dollar more so than anything else. That's unfortunate. When its time to step out on principles that will cause us to refrain from buying that car, that house, that shirt, going on that cruise, etc....ah we hide behind statement like, "We can't divest from everything." In the words of Obama, when it is wrong, "Yes we can." In fact, Obama reallyt should have divested long ago - no cut cards for this one.

Congratulations to Mrs. McCain for divesting. People should not criticize a person for doing the right thing, even if it seems to be coming late. There are still many people who know nothing about Darfur, let alone the investment connection.
Point of information: the wealth Sudan gets from its oil industry is NOT shared with its population, who are mostly dirt poor, and some barely surviving. Most of Sudan's oil revenue (an estimated 75%) goes to its military, which is occupied with butchering civilians in Darfur; it also goes to support the dictatorship and elite. But it doesn't help the general population. Sudan is a country enriching a fraction of its population by developing oil, gas and mineral industries while millions of its people are only alive because of international relief aid. As Sudan's oil wealth increases, it doesn't get applied to relief or development aid; they don't care about people that way. This is why investing in the country's oil industry will NOT help the Sudanese people at all, but will only help the military and elite.
See www.sudandivestment.org for the whole story. It is a "targeted" divestment plan which has analyzed various industries working in Sudan and recommends divesting only from those industries that do nothing for the common person, but only help the military and the elite. Industries which benefit the general population, for ex. a companies making clothing or other ordinary items, are NOT being recommended for divestment.

Lemme get this straight.. Cindy doesn't need to release her tax returns, John McCain doesn't need to release all of his medical records, answer a straight question as to whether he called his wife horrible names, why he consistently votes against benefits for veterans or why his father in law immediately opened up a billion dollar beer industry as soon as John shut down all further inquiry into the MIA/POW left in Nam and why he escaped all charges of collaboration with the enemy when other POW who provided less were prosecuted? Got it. I suppose Cindy's past record of being busted for drug theft and abuse is off limits as well.

I'm confused. Is McCain with us or is he with the terrorists?

Oh oh. I have those same mutual funds. I guess in the opinion of some here, that makes me a terrible person and a hypocrite. So now that I know, I will change my 401(k) investments. But according to some, I will always have to be viewed badly because of that.
Before you cast dispersions on Cindy McCain, you have to think of how Bill Clinton gave China, one of the greatest human rights abusers IN THE WORLD, fast track trade status. It wasn't a matter of not knowing. He did it with full knowledge of their record. I am an independent, but you have to look at where responsibility can be laid. BTW, China fully supports Sudan and their policies. Place blame where blame is due.

It isn't interesting her "conscience" didn't kick in until now.

Now we know why she refuses to release her tax returns. No, we do not want The Bride of FrankenMcInsane in OUR White House. She and these vile repugnikkkans are doing business with the enemies that they demand that we fear! HYPOCRITS!

Everyone make 50 copies of your tax return and go door to door and give it out to all your neighbors that you don't know; also include your investment portfolio so they can pass useless judgements against you that have nothing to do with your real character.
Stop. Write a check to a good charity in Sudan.

well, it's no surprise her popularity ratings are so low. she's even behind marge simpson! http://www.236.com/news/2008/05/14/if_they_imd_michelle_obama_and_6493.php

How many oil stocks do they own as well?
If owning oil stocks was bad- virtually everyone in America with a mutual fund, an IRA or 401k would be bad. Approximately 14% of the invested money for retirement in fact.

Why won't you disclose your tax returns Cindy. This shows we need to see them more than ever. What else are you doing. You are the moneybags behind your dependent husband. If he's going to be the President, you can't keep hiding your finances. Kerry's wife disclosed her returns. Why won't you disclose yours? America can't take a chance on you. We just voted on trust twice for W. and got burned twice.

Seems like investing in Sudan would help their economy and create jobs, lower violence and create a better life in the future. This could be done even while not condoning the current bad things that are going on today. Thank you Cindy McCain.

CINDY MAYBE A SWEET LADY BUT- DOING BUSINESS WITH SUDAN SENDS CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE. THE STATE DEPT CALLS SUDAN A STATE SPONSOR OF TERRORISM. MCAINS CAMPAIGN IS FULL OF PEOPLE THAT BENEFIT FROM THE PLIGHT OF DEVELOPING NATIONS. WHY WOULD SOMBODY DO BUSINESS WITH MOBUTU OF ZAIRE (THANK GOD HES DEAD)AND THE BURMA GOVERNMENT-* NO ACTUALLY LOBBYING FOR THESE DICTATORS. W
LETS BACK TRACK OKAY.. WE ARE LOSING MEN AND WOMEN IN IRAQ TO CREATE A DEMOCRACY AND AT THE SAME TIME SUPPORTING HISTORY'S MOST VILE DICTATORS.
I KNEW MCAIN IS CLUELESS BUT NOT THIS MUCH

SHE WOULD NOT RELEASE HER TAX RETURNS. EH. I THINK AMERICANS DESRVE TO KNOW WHO THE FIRST LADY IS DOING BUSINESS WITH
I THINK MCCAIN HAS TOO MANY CONFLICTS OF INTEREST WITHIN HIS CAMPAIGN. FULL DISCLOSURE OF HIS WIFES FINANCES IS NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE REQUEST FOR THE PRESIDENT OF THE US. SUDAN WHICH IS A STATE THAT SPONSORS TERRORISM SHOULD NOT BE DOING BUSINESS WITH THE FIRST FAMILY. AND IF HE IS NOT AWARE OF WHAT/WHO HIS WIFE IS DOING BUSINESS WITH.. GOD SAFE AMERICA.

Well, good to do it now before the Dems get into office and boost the capital gains tax.

How cute of Cindy to support genocide in Sudan, though I'm sure her millions help her sleep at night while Sudanese women and children get rapped and maimed. Awesome!
