Huckabee Apologizes for Obama Joke

Updated 10:59 a.m.
By Michael D. Shear
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- He was known as a presidential candidate with a sense of humor. But Mike Huckabee's joke at the National Rifle Association convention Friday was a dud.

Appearing in front of about 6,000 gun rights activists, Huckabee's speech was interrupted by a loud noise. The former Arkansas governor said, "That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he -- he dove for the floor."

The comment was immediately noted on news websites and by bloggers who found the crack about Obama getting shot at inappropriate. Obama's campaign had no comment, as it was engaged in a heated back-and-forth with both President Bush and Sen. John McCain -- the presumptive Republican nominee -- over Obama's fitness to be commander in chief.

Friday night, Huckabee took to his blog to apologize for the quip. "During my speech at the NRA a loud noise backstage, that sounded like a chair falling, distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an off hand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama," he wrote. "I apologize that my comments were offensive, that was never my intention."

Huckabee provided most of the humor in the 2008 Republican primaries, cracking jokes during several of the debates. He won the Iowa caucuses but failed to reach far beyond the evangelical community in states after that.

Huck made an inappropriate joke on the spur of the moment and was sorry for it. Has anybody here never said something stupid and wished they could take it back immediately? If anything, I think it shows that he's human and not a preprogrammed political robot like any of the current major candidates. And please, why do people keep on insisting that his bad attempt at humor is more offensive because Obama is an African-American (well in reality only his father was African, but not present in raising young Barack....). Can we please move beyond race in this country? The only reason all these stigmas are still sticking around is because people keep separating Americans based on a physical trait. Why does it have to be "historic" that Obama is the first half-black major party presidential nominee? Would I make history by being the first presidential candidate who is 1/16th Chinese? That would be ridiculous. Okay, sorry, I'm a bit off-topic. -End rant.

I was 50 yards from the whole thing You can hear me laugh in the background.

Get a sense of humor!

This is not 1774 when we were not allowed to joke around about our leaders. As long as there is The NRA... it will never be 1774 again!!!

I will laugh at what I want. If you want to call it insensitive or racist... I a proud to have made an ignorant person confused... again.

Long Live The U.S.A.

huckabees comment was completely out of line and terrible. nobody should use guns...to kill animals or humans. his mom had to have been a scoundrel hooker who snorted crack laced with ass....horrible man.

I read a few of the remarks before I got bored of the off handed jargon of many respondents. It is pathetic to see how slow change comes about and how narrow minded many in our country has become.

We still live in a white and black society and failed to embrace the concept of just being an American. Hatred, bigotry, and engraved learnings from the past continue to raise its ugly head.

We hate another race with pure joy which displays our ignorance or lack of education. It is amusing how the educated members of our society support Change while the less educated, uncaring members support separation.

If you want to make a comment about God's chosen people, read your bible for the few believers out there. The Jewish has always been and will always be the chosen ones. We, the gentiles, have been given new life under the new covenant and it has nothing to do with race but the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Saviour, Loving the Lord your God with all your strength, heart, and soul, and lastly loving your neighbor as you love yourself.

Hatred begets hatred. How can a man profess a love of the Lord and hate someone or be prejudiced (harm) another? Wake up America.. the day of reckoning is upon you.. Where do you stand?

Why dont you bleeding heart left-wingers dont understan why shooting neegrobooms is funny? It is part of our history, lynchmobs and stuff, and you need to respect history a little more. Its cause God left the building that we forget about self respect for the Anglo Saxon race and God's Chosen People.

To Bill Kane: you call what Obama stands for, a deomcracy?! Huh! Anyone can talk change: Hitler did, look what he accomplished.

And as far John McCain distancing himself from Rod Parsley & John Hagee: another political mistake. These two outstanding preachers should be listened to more often. Rod Parsley is not afraid to speak the truth & shoot from the hip. He has spoken at my church & he will be welcomed back again this year, with open arms! What John Hagee said about New Orleans being punished by God is near Biblical! Want to know who to vote for? Ask God... read your Bible. Any candidate who is for abortion & gay marriages does not belong running this country. It's time we opened our Bibles up & read them!! We need to teach our kids & grandkids to start respecting their parents again, & also to take back this country, the way our founding fathers would want it. We are too concerned with pleasing this world, & our fellow man, instead of pleasing God.. let's get back to basics & good, clean tv. shows & teach our kids who to vote for, so they won't have to deal with this like we are...

Posted by: | May 24, 2008 5:21 AM

I can't wait for this election to be over!! I'm disenchanted by the candidates & bored with their speeches.. no one has said anything really different or anything that they can really change.. how is it that the Dem's claim that they will be able to lower gas prices & Rep's don't? Why are Obama & Hilary so bent on bringing the troops home ASAP, like the day after they are elected? Wake up people!! Watch & listen very carefully.. and pray.. pray & pray & pray for God's candidate to come out of this mess... we are following too closely in the foosteps of Great Britain's government: they currently have Muslims in their Parliment. Muslims are only like, 4% of England's population overall, but they now control 75% of their government. The state of Minnesota voted in a Muslim for Congress. This is their goal in life: To penetrate every country's government & take it over!! If you think religion is not part of a campaign, think again. If you thought M itt Romney was not a good choice as a Mormon, then why would you vote for a Muslim?? Do your homework, people! Read the Koran, &learn what their agenda is about!
I was listening to Pastor Robb Thompson out of a Chicago suburb: he will fill in the blanks for you,as well as Sandy Rios on WYLL radio.

Posted by: | May 24, 2008 5:08 AM

to renzo capetti:You quoted from the 2nd Amendment;sure would be nice if the candidates would read the Constitution;they would be surprised to find out that there is NO separation of church & state.. I don't understand how the politicians in this country go around saying that it is, when it's not. Thomas Jefferson was mis-quoted during a speech he made in France. He said IMAGINE if you would,a separation of church & state. We all need to re-read this document;some of us need to read it for the fist time.

Posted by: | May 24, 2008 4:55 AM

I am soooo sick of politicians saying things & having to take it back later.. we are all human, we have all said something we regretted..say your apologies & get over it. I don't think it was the wiseset thing Huckabee could have said, but it's also not the worst I've heard either. I wish he was still in this, & won. He was, & still is, my only choice for Prez... Obama has an alterial motive;Hilary is clueless, & Mc Cain is just not conservative enough for a Republican..wake up, America!! We need to vote for God's chosen one, right now, I don't see nor hear one...

Lots of good points here, my favorite is:

I would encourage anyone who cares about the future of this Republic to go to Youtube and watch the video for yourself. Search "huckabee nra" and you'll see several to choose from.

The reason it's important is because you can see, from watching the tape, that these comments were not spontaneous. Huckabee had this scripted in advance, meaning he had an accomplice backstage to make the noise on cue.

To me, that raises the stakes significantly. The fact that he would plan such a hideously despicable threat and then camoflage it as a "joke" signals a very dangerous turn for the Republican party.

Posted by: gerold | May 21, 2008 8:35 PM

ncbludvl,
Huckabee didn't help get that rapist off. The rapist sentence was reduced by the Gov. that took over for Clinton; which made him eligible for parole. Gov. Huckabee would not commute his sentence because he didn't want him on the streets without a probation officer keeping tabs on him. The Gov. has nothing to do with who the parole board paroles. The ones that made it out to look like Huckabee was at fault were disgruntled former employees. Disgruntled former employees are also among the ones that continually file charges against him. Nothing has stuck so far; because their are many that know more of the facts that stick up for Huckabee than those that file false accusations.

Huckabee's history of fighting for civil rights proves that he's not racist. Huckabee apologized numerous times for what he knows was a stupid remark. Maybe some of those bitter people that cling to guns and religion understood it as just a flat joke.

What madness has overcome our country? That any man could think that this comment was either appropriate or funny shows the level that we as a nation have sunk to.
The comments that I've read here confrim my fear that we are doomed. I am a veteran, I've fired many guns, and I love what this country is supposed to stand for.
Does anyone realize what we have allowed to happen since 1980? That in the interest of making sure that the "economy" was catering to the "right" people we have traded our ability to defend our selves? That we are totally incapable of economic independance? That our country was sold to the highest bidder? Is this what we want? To have a nation that is owned by foriegn powers?
We ignore reality so that we can focus on the hate that we are told to have against our fellow Americans. We accept the rape of our constitution in the name of false security. We allow the institutiuons of our nation to be corrupted by greed while ignoring the people who slip through the cracks to suffer extremes of poverty that rival any third world nation.
Mike Huckabees' comment is not the problem, it is just another symptom of the rampant disease that has gripped our nation for the last 40 years. Co-incidentally, the last time a presidential candidate expressed a position that offended so many of the supporters of that group who seeks to only assure their own continued wealth and power. They rely on the prejudice and fear that they instill in those who are lost in their own country.
To those who claim to be Christian I say "What you do to the least of mine, you do to me" To all others I say "We hold these truths to be self evident. That all men are created equal and are endowed by the creator with certain inalienable rights. The right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
I too fear for Barrack Obama. I fear for his family and for our nation. I would beg that ALL of you who see this as a joke to reconsider. I pray that we will one day rise up and sieze the reigns of power from those who have stolen it from us. That one day we will see fit as a nation to continue the grand experiment that put our nation here in the beginning and return to the time when we stood together against the world as a shining beacon of freedom and justice and the rule of law.

I just heard about the comment yesterday (5/19) on the radio. It goes to prove that some things do get swept under the rug by the media. The "joke" wasn't a joke. It doesn't matter if he is a pastor. The Bible says out of the heart the mouth speaks. Far too many things that people attempt to pass off as a joke just to be able to say it, are really how they feel. Now he want to be McCain's running mate. I am an Obama supporter, but if for some reason he doesn't get the nomination, I'd run like hell to vote for Hillary. There is NO way I'd put Bush III (McCain) or his wanting to get Obama shot running mate Huck (hick) in office!

Posted by: Toni | May 20, 2008 8:57 AM

Someone here (nclwtk) mentioned that we should put more emphasis on a person's character rather than their skin color. Amen to that! But..in this case, the poster was insinuating that Mike Huckabee is some paragon of virtue while Mr. Obama is not. Apparently because Obama grew up in a "white" world of privilege while Huckabee is from the "real world". Hmmm...ya might wanna check out ol' Mike's record as governor - like the time he helped get a convicted serial rapist released from federal prison. The convict, once released - despite pleas to Huck from many of his former victims - went on to rape and murder at least one more woman. Or, you could examine Huck's rather lengthy record of ethics violations while in office. Gee...don't you hate it when pesky old facts get in the way of an ignorant rant?

Posted by: ncbludvl | May 20, 2008 3:45 AM

I live in Pennsylvania....and yes Obama was 100% correct when he noted that people cling to guns in certain pockets of America. I am pro-gun but there is a certain pocket of Americans that take it too far. Obviously Huckabee is pandering to those types in this audience.

Posted by: dcyd | May 19, 2008 11:20 PM

The Republicans always make the statements that they do as a reflection of who they are. Apparently, many are surprised that the day has come for someone different to become president of this rapidly falling country. Huckabee does what he does best. He is a clown.

Posted by: Steve | May 19, 2008 7:57 PM

I heard the comments while I was on the way home this morning from work on a local radio station. These comments are coming from a man who just got purely decimated in the race for the Republican party nomination and who is begging for Mccain to put him on his ticket for the Vice Presidency. Some people have to make an impact some kind of way to get their name mentioned. Sit down Huckabee please. Bow out gracefully.

Posted by: Taveras | May 19, 2008 6:57 PM

This mess is absurb. The things being done and said, has never been done or said before. Have any other contender been vandalized or had death threats, NO!!!! Hillary, NO--McCain, NO, and none of the rest. Then WHY OBAMA??? We all know the answer to that.

Please Wake Up America--we are not walking in rose gardens, but sitting on a "time-bomb" just waiting to happen.

Scripture:
"If My people would humble themselves and pray, and seek My face, and turn from the wickedness and abomination, then I will be faithful to heal the land. My people who are called by My name need to take a stand, and walk in the holy conviction of the Lord upon their hearts. Don't give into fear of man, but with the right heart, move out in My Spirit in worship, and in praise, and in obedience to My perfect will as I show you".

Posted by: | May 19, 2008 4:13 PM

er... grow up.
sticks and stones... etc.
play a sport, study hard, etc.
thicken your skin...
and please, dont go through life with the unreasonable expectation that you won't be offended. Offence comes from a lack of self-esteem. If you know who you are and are happy with what you have become, you can never be offended.

Posted by: scott | May 19, 2008 3:37 PM

I do not understand how a potential McCain running mate could be thinking of Obama being getting shot.

There a quote from Jesus in the Bible: "It is what comes out of a man's mouth that reveals what is in the heart. This is because what is spoken is directly from the heart."

What comes out of your mouth reveals whether you a good or a bad person, there is no joke about that!!!

Posted by: Akech | May 19, 2008 3:22 PM

I go with what Cheryl said. Huckabee is a decent guy, seemed to have been a good governor. He made a weak attempt at humor. It'll probably cost him a shot at VP, and I think he would have been good at drawing evangelical support for the ticket.

Just another self-inflicted wound for the GOP.

Posted by: gbooksdc | May 19, 2008 2:53 PM

What's truly offensive is that Huckabee is suppossedly a man of the cloth. My father was a paster and I don't know any such people that think it's funny to joke about assassination.

Posted by: Trab | May 19, 2008 2:46 PM

You have to try and ignore the supidity of the ignorant and it's followers!!!. As one comment stated "there will be an uprise and revolt in US history that the world has NEVER seen before if.....you fill in the rest.

This is the 21st century not 400 years ago or even the 6o's. Those that thought the "joke" was humarous and/or funny--it's a quote that says "laughs will eventually turn into cries!!

The bible says--"there will be whaling, and gnashing of teeth in the land-like it's never been heard before". I didn't say it the bible did--and the bible don't LIE.

This election EVERY EYE is WATCHING. In closing the bible also say "WATCH as well as PRAY!!!

Posted by: | May 19, 2008 2:05 PM

God help this country! Huckabee's joke is very damaging. Let's us pray than nothing will happen to Senator Obama. Very sad indeed when you have a so-called religious Senator making such joke about another decent person. He is now in the same rank as Reverend Wright!

Posted by: Gladys Moore | May 19, 2008 1:54 PM

To Rafael, Who posted that suggesting harm to president Bush would be well received on Comedy Central or any other public media. I assure it would not. Mike huckabee has clearly lost his mind, or has never had any sense at all. I looked up the law which would address this type of behavior with respect to a sitting president.

The first ammendment garutees free speech, but we all know the limits to that.

According to this law -- 18 USC Sec. 871 -- which reads, in part:

"...Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits for conveyance in the mail or for a delivery from any post office or by any letter carrier any letter, paper, writing, print, missive, or document containing any threat to take the life of, to kidnap, or to inflict bodily harm upon the President of the United States, the President-elect, the Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President of the United States, or the Vice President-elect, or knowingly and willfully otherwise makes any such threat against the President, President-elect, Vice President or other officer next in the order of succession to the office of President, or Vice President-elect, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

RAFAEL PR51

It's not just "liberals" that objected to this, Patrick C. . And it is an insult to conservatives' intelligence to imply all conservatives think Huck's ad-lib was humorous.

I actually like Huckabee (even though I disagree with him on some issues and I especially think we need to remember that many of our ancestors came here to escape govts. ruled by religion). But I did think he seemed honest and had some empathy for regular folks including people of differnt backgrounds & races. I will always remember when Joe Scarborough was egging him on to jump on the Rev. Wright attack and guilt-by-association bandwagon, Huck was decent and courageous enough to refuse to take the bait and made some very good points. I had been thinking a TV channel should hire Huck as the regular conservative commentator. I had thought he seemed pretty funny too!

So I was stunned that Huck made this abysmally STUPID remark. First, I DON'T even see why he THOUGHT it was funny. And I really have to wonder about the mental processes of anyone who does find it funny. Even the falling over a chair bit was about the level of an 8 year old. But the gun part was baffling as an attempt at humor. I mean, what would Huck do himself, stand there grinning and wait to get shot?

That is even outside the main point which is that it was REALLY bad taste. It would have been really crass to joke about ANY president or candidate being shot at, especially considering our history of assassinations. It was yet more appalling about the first viable black candidate- -a man who is getting frequent death threats and is risking his life on a daily basis to run for President. A person doesn't have to support Obama to recognize that it takes some courage to do what he is doing.

I expected more of an apology. It seems like Huck thinks of it as just a sort of minor misunderstanding and does not understand how wrong most people think it was.

Also I don't think it does the cause of 2nd Amendment Rights much good to make casual jokes about pointing guns at presidential candidates or anyone else.

and btw, renzo capetti, you misunderstand the purpose of the right to bear arms - it is not just to guard against a foreign invader but against tyranny - meaning by our own government.

Patrick C.,

I just served some spaghetti, and the sound of it made me think about someone ripping out your intestines! bwahahahahahah! Funny huh?

Seriously, this story is sad. Huck seems like an intelligent and thoughtful guy, but he sometimes he makes these inexplicable comments that leave you shaking your head. Kinda like the Republican version of Reverend Wright.

Posted by: Scott in NC | May 19, 2008 2:06 AM

I though that it was a pretty funny joke. Lighten up, liberals.

Posted by: Patrick C. | May 19, 2008 12:14 AM

Mike Huckabee's comments are not only disparaging but dangerous. Let's face reality, that could be a veiled message to a nut to take violent action against Barack Obama. This election will present to the world the real America. It will reflect the hidden racist among us and the work we still have to do to become the UNITED States of America.

Posted by: Ron V | May 18, 2008 11:22 PM

I read the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution to find out what the NRA and lots of other citizens felt or pretended was so dangerous about any gun control measure.
Didn't take long.
Do all our states have well regulated militias?
Or does it now translate to State Police?
Or is it just protecting the right to form a well regulated militia in case some other state or country or mercenary or criminal force started shooting at citizens in that state?
I guess that must be the reason. To fend/warn off attacks.
But i think Huckabee's attack had more to do with jealousy.
Yeah, it was a flubbed ad lib joking dud.
But in front of the NRA and cameras and microphones.
Huckabee said, a few months ago, campaigning honestly, that he would like to reform The Constitution to fit The Bible.
Now we all know the harm which lawyers' jealousy of doctors has done.
Are some preachers jealous of attorneys?
Or is it merely some Bible lovers seeking to leap beyond parity with law lovers?
I'm sure Gov Huckabee sincerely regrets his NRA ad lib imagery.
But it might reveal something new to him about himself.
His faith may have led him astray from being able to take the oath to defend The Constitution Of The United States.
This nation should not become a church, though most of ours are no advocate threat to democracy.
But, if we don't have The Constitution, what would protect the freedom of religion?

Posted by: renzo capetti | May 18, 2008 9:53 PM

Further, like Gantry, Huckabee is a con man and a liar. Of course his remarks were meant to disparage Obama...could any reasonable person believe otherwise? Further, his 'apology', coming only after the storm of protest arose because of his duplicity, rings hollow. If he cottons himself as a man of God...God help his flock...they will be sheared.

A Black child, raised by a poor White woman, in the late 60's?! He probably heard the "N" word to his face more times than a mirror in Richard Pryor's dressing room. Add to that, the fact that his name was "Barack"..

Posted by: Arnold Jackson | May 18, 2008 9:18 PM

The audience didnt get the humor, neither did the rest of us. The crack shows Huckabee's level of intelligence [if one may use the term]. When a rifle is pointed at you, and you have the opportunity of hitting the deck before it goes off, you do just that, as any member of the NRA would have been happy to explain to him. Ask Cheney; if he had seen that gun pointed at him, he'd had been flat out on the deck. Of course, Huckabee might be just too stupid [even for a republican]: witness his inability to do the right thing when McCain's guns centered on him and up in smoke went his presidential dream [our nightmare]. Goodnight Mr. Huckabee.

For those who think that comment was funny, just goes to show how some ignorant people in America really are. Maybe if you were the ones that were getting shot and hanged and murdered just because of the color of your skin, you would understand the sensitivity of the joke. That man realized how ignorant he sounded after he spoke. That's why he stuttered through the rest of the speach. Maybe it was his wife running from a rapist. I wonder how he would take that?

Why is it that McCain or Hillary couldn't have been the ones getting shot at? It's a shame how some whites think it's only blacks who get shot or assassinated. If the tables were turned, and while at the National Press Club, Rev. Wright did/said:

"That was JOHN McCAIN. He just tripped off a chair. He's getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he -- he dove for the floor."

It would be a TOTALLY DIFFERENT LEVEL OF MEDIA OUTBURST... especially with FAUX NEWS!

But I know, it's not the same. Why? Because it involves Huckabee and Obama; and not Wright and McCain!

DOUBLE STANDARDS to the end!

I don't understand the "tripping off a chair" comment, does it suggest lynching? but the assassinating part is kind of clear. The attempt on Reagan was an evil act beyond race, but with all the talk about race in this campaign and the upped protection round the senator, this joke was unacceptable. You can't joke about shooting folks, right? Kids get kicked out of school for things like. We have a "we take all threats seriously" policy on planes and everywhere. It's not helpful. But again, good reaction against Huck's statements. I don't think he's evil, and I'm black btw. It's just irresponsible. Wright was, too.

Huckabee should apologize directly to Sen. Obama and his family by sending a note or telegram! As a pastor, he had no business making a crude joke like that! It was not funny and as a supporter of "free speech", I think he made a dangerous misjudgment! He needs to apologize to the Obama family! I saw him on one of the talk shows this morning and it took him a few minutes to get the apology out. Shame, shame on H-U-C-K-A-BEE

Maybe Huckabee should give up jokes for the sake of the troops.

While i was by no means supportive of McCain or Huckabee I do not for one second believe that either of them are racist or silly enough to ruthless statements about an assignation of Obama.
I generally like Huckabee because of his wit, however this joke bombed and i think he realized it.
If Huckabee's (good natured) affinity for telling jokes was not known then i think Obama and his staff would have jumped all over him (and by association, McCain).
I am happy that the Obama camp did not respond (justifiably) negatively about this since it shows that the man can take a joke (even though it was not a good one).
Of course if the shoe was on the other foot, the racist Hannity and his mindless sheep would have a sound bite loop fest again.

Mike" (6:06PM) You say,"Unlike Spike Lee who talked about shooting Charlton Heston, Mike Huckabee apologized for his comments."

For your information, Spike Lee is not a politician, nor is he a potential VP candidate! He is a film director, producer, writer, and actor. Huckabee IS NOT! There's a difference!

Posted by: Curt | May 18, 2008 6:15 PM

This so-called "joke" by the so-called "ordained Southern Baptist minister" is absolutely appalling. It makes the dumbest of the dumbest things that Cowboy Bush has said, in the past, seem somewhat intelligent.

IF, GOD FORBID, there were to be ANY type of assassination attempt on Senator Obama, there would be such an uprising with an enormous amount of mutiny, rebellion and revolt; and at a level that that this country has not experienced in recent times!

Also, we would know where to look first... and that is at the GOP. They would be the party of "DETESTATION & HATRED" for a long time coming; especially if they keep these types of tactics up, they'll be well on their way!

I hope the GOP finds it in their best interest to request additional support, from the Secret Service, specifically dedicated to Senator Obama. In my opinion, this comment has actually planted the thought into some, if not many, wacky souls out there and therefore cannot be downplayed! It's NO JOKE!

The GOP is so desperate that they have become very cruel, vindictive, spiteful, nasty, pitiless, callous, harsh, vile, wicked, contemptible and downright EVIL!

The GOP, and their past tactics are simply PATHETIC!

Economist: War to cost $3.5 trillion
Nobel economist tells Congress about impact of war that White House said would cost $60B.
Bob Deans / Cox News Service

WASHINGTON -- The Iraq war will cost Americans between $3 trillion and $5 trillion, including military spending, broader economic costs and decades of benefits and medical care for combat veterans, a Nobel prize-winning economist told the Joint Economic Committee on Thursday.
The upper end of the estimate is nearly double what the same economist, Joseph Stiglitz, projected two years ago. He attributed the dramatic increase to the continuing intensity of the war, which began five years ago next month, and the likelihood that operations there would continue for at least another year.
The war's gravest toll has been paid in blood. Fighting in Iraq has so far taken the lives of 3,973 U.S. troops and left nearly 29,300 wounded. Its staggering expense, however, has dwarfed the 2003 White House war estimate of $60 billion, and the price is rising.

"America is a rich country," said Stiglitz, a Columbia University professor and former World Bank chief economist.
"The question is not whether we can afford to squander $3 trillion or $5 trillion," he told committee members. "We can. But our strength will be sapped. ... There is no such thing as a free war."
Taxpayers have spent $607 billion to pay for the war through September, according to the staff of the Joint Economic Committee, made up of Republicans and Democrats from both houses of Congress.
The true cost to date, though, is $1.3 trillion, the committee staff estimates, when taking into account the costs of caring for wounded soldiers, replacing equipment lost or destroyed, the economic impact of disrupted oil markets and lost work time for reservists and other expenses.
In a report published last November, the committee estimated that the war would cost Americans between $3.5 trillion and $4.5 trillion by 2017.

Huckabee, Vito Fossella, Tom Davis, "bathroom footsie" Larry Craig and of course "high school history dropout" Kevin James are quite frankly ballot box poison for the GOP or as I call them "Goofy Old People". I think if this party goes down in glorious flames in the fall one can only thank Youtube and maybe that guy who invented that word "misunderestimated".

Youtube, thanks for the memories.

Poor Huckabee, he is just blowing the whistle. He knows...

Why is Clinton clinging on to the race ? She is banking on a catastrophic event to happen: she is so sure it will.

bama is engineering a transfer of power, a restoral of democracy. All those who have attempted or could have attemped to do just that over the last 40 years... got shot.

Without exception.

And I do not need to list their names here.

Huckabee epitomises the mindless rightwing conservatives. Another hate-pedlar is that "more patriotic than thou" KKK faithful, Sean Hannity of the Fox News. But the puzzling aspect of it is, how on earth such scumbags are given this much prominence in a civilised society as America. I suppose this racist hatemongers are doing what they are doing, all in the name of the cherished freedom of speech or expression.

Answer: Your spelling is a joke Ebonyflash.
What you are saying is US democracy is a joke, becuse Obama has the nomination in the bag and will probably be president. Democracy sometimes produces leaders the right wing doesn't like. If the right were perpetually elected, it would not be a democracy. It would be Burma.
Ebonyflash asks what els(sic) is new?

I salute the Proud American for his courage and conviction. True loyalty is shown to the nation and not the party. It takes courage to call a spade a spade.

As the Proud American put it rightly, those who are blinded to truth by their hate and prejudice are mindless sheep and will continue to deny reality.

War should be avoided at all cost as it only brings death and destruction. It should only be a reluctant last resort option when all else failed. But the tragic truth with the Bush administration, was that war was the first option. There is no denying about it. The cost: the lives of more than four thousand young and brave Americans and the crippling effect of many thousands more Americans and the untold sufferings and sorrows brought about to thousands of their loved-ones.

How can anyone with any degree of sanity justify the war in Iraq. It was waged on the false pretext of finding weapons of mass destruction. It has revived global terrorism on a frightening scale. It has allowed entry of Alqaida into Iraq. It has caused petrol price to rocket high. It has put the world economy on a tail spin.

As the Proud American put it, it's up to the Americans to decide whether to change course and bring an end to this madness by voting for Obama or continue this mindless war and sink America into the biggest hole than the depression.

Posted by: John Santiago | May 18, 2008 12:45 AM

This is was not a fortuitous lapse. It is in everybody's mind. Obama's campaign is engineering the transfer of power to the people of the USA, the restoral of a clean slated democracy for our republic. He is in great danger. I pray for him everyday and I am not a pastor.

Why do the Huckabee fans keep knocking Romney when it's Huck with his foot in his mouth. I just read Romney's remarks at the same NRA gathering. Quite different from Huckabee's. No dribbling, half-baked attempts at dark humor. He stays focused on promoting McCain and attacking Obama's policy and lack of experience. No personal attacks on Obama. No attempts to draw attention to HIMSELF, like Huck's lame attempt to come across as the funny guy. Then I tried news-googling both Huckabee and then Romney in return. All the Romney press recently is about Romney building up McCain and waging the battle against Obama's liberal weaknesses, point by point, sticking to substance. Huckabee's press is about Huckabee. This guy is campaigning for HIMSELF, still. He wants to be the jokester. The press is about Huckabee. Not about Huckabee's support of McCain. Why is he still on TV? Drop Huckabee!

Posted by: trailman101 | May 18, 2008 12:15 AM

People, quit knocking the NRA. THEY didn't make this "anti-Joke", HUCKABEE did it all on his own. The crowd clearly falls silent. They laugh well enough at the suggestion the noise is Obama tripping over a chair, but they clearly DID NOT like the punchline. EVERYBODY but the Huck-lovers, and hopefully even many of them, find huckabee's statement apalling. Almost all republicans and christian folk abhor the comment and now apparently the weak mind that fed his throat. I don't care how many times he repeats the anti-apology that he didn't mean to offend. He needs to drum up the courage and honestly admit he has a deeper problem that he must get over, and beg the public's forgiveness while he retires from the public light for a season to get square on this.

Posted by: Rick C | May 18, 2008 12:07 AM

Response to: "People really need to lighten up some -- it's healthier."

Um -- well -- some of us just don't find jokes about pointing a gun at a presidential candidate ha-ha kind of humor. But here's a real laugher for you: "What's a bigger joke than Huckabee's about Obama?" Answer: The Republican Party's shot at getting a candidate into the White House this election.

Posted by: David D. Robbins Jr. | May 18, 2008 12:05 AM

Huckabee just isn't ready for prime time. No presidential stature, not enough experience, not seasoned enough, too rash, too likely to do this kind of thing. I don't want to admit that his problem runs deeper. Maybe it doesn't. If you give him a benefit of a doubt, then hopefully he will improve with time. This may teach him quite a bit if he is humble enough to admit how flawed he still is. Let's put Huckabee on a shelf for awhile and let him mature. He might be a real contender in the future.

Posted by: Bob O | May 18, 2008 12:00 AM

This is a Freudian slip of which to quote wickipedia says:"These thoughts are consciously repressed and then unconsciously released."
This despicable comment of Huckabee's betrays a deep seated ethnocentrism. It is really scary. To pander to a crowd of people, some of whom feel very strongly about using guns, is not what America needs. As we know from tragic school shootings, SOME people with guns are mentally ill, even if the vast majority are not. To say this inflammatory joke shows that Huckabee and his buddies are not fit to hold our lives in his hands.

Posted by: Bill Kane | May 17, 2008 10:57 PM

The ENGLISH-language past tense of "dive" is "dived," NOT "dove," Mr. Huckabee. Low-class, sloppy-headed colloquial usage permits "dove" -- according to the grammar of the barely-educated, anti-logical Cracker working class, the group that may find your Obama joke funny.

Since the Obama supporters hate Hillary so much, I am going to send her campaign a note and beg her to leave the Democratic party --- and run as an independent.

It would be great to have a right-wing candidate, a left-wing candidate and a moderate running for the Oval office in November.

In response to the following which unfortunately is off topic however it needs answering because it seems like too many posts seen at too many sites who are Obama supporters:

"I am a proud Republican and Obama has my vote because unlike BUSH and McCain he uses his brain before he even considers the use of military force. Any fool can order another person's child to fire a gun, risk their lives and go to war but a great president will do everyhing he can to avoid it. Your GW is a warmonger and he insults the memories of my fallen brothers. Ask yourself this, if you can send your "own" child, not someone elses, to go fight in Iraq becaude you believe in in that much by all means vote for Mccain, but if you can't, you'll know why as a proud Republican, I'm voting for Obama. Voting should never be about voting for party lines, it should be about voting for what you believe in and who best matches that. But by all means, be a mindless sheep who ignores reality and continues this war with McCain and sink our Counrty into the biggest hole since the great depression.

Posted by: A Proud American "
------------------------------------------

I find it unusual if you are supposedly such a proud military man why you would decide that Obama as Commander in Chief with changing stands on bringing troops home is better than Clinton who is firm on starting the first day to plan and within 60 days start the withdrawal and who also has the support of 35 former top Military leaders stating her past performances in committees and her dedication to the military is superior?
If you are a proud military man why have you decided to pick what your fellow military brass seem to fear is the weaker military Commander? And most of all why do you say "Your GW is a warmonger" when he is supposedly your Commander?

If you watch Huckabee as he is saying the so-called "joke", you can clearly see he is reading from prepared notes in front of him. Which means he was ready. Which implies that this entire episode, including the "unexpected offstage noise" was entirely expected and planned.

What this racist GOP f**ker and his helpers are trying to do, is impart the idea into a gun-toting crazie's head to try and shoot Mr. Obama. This is subtle, negative and evil subliminal messaging at its best, and these a**holes are guilty of it. They will stop at nothing to help carry on the Bush legacy, even if it means faking a tasteless joke and taking the heat for it.

Regarding the issue of foreign policy credentials, yesterday's Washington Post reported that two years ago McCain said he'd be willing to neogotiate with Hamas. That's something that Obama says he wouldn't do, because Hamas is a terrorist organization.

The democrats are simply attempting to gain some extra points in the overnight polling - for that they are willing to sacrifice the national security of this nation.

Obama is weak on terrorism.

Bill Clinton was weak on terrorism - do I have to get the list of terrorist incidents that the democrats did little to counter.

- the first World Trade Center bombing New York 1993

- the Khobar Towers - US personnel

- the bombing of the US embassey in Kenya

- the bombing of the US embassey in Tanzania

- the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen

OK so the democrats did ALMOST NOTHING in response to these incidents.

What happened? They kept on coming at us until 3000 Americans were killed.

Yes, I am saying that Bill Clinton was WEAK on terrorism and that was in part a reason for 9/11.

NOW the democrats are OFFERING US THE SAME SOLUTION - WEAKNESS ON TERRORISM.

Somehow the democrats are attempting to convince the country that "if we ignore them, they will go away."

Lets send Obama back to Hyde Park where he can hang out with Bill Ayers and keep Obama away from the White House.

Posted by: 37th&OStreet | May 17, 2008 1:05 PM

It was not a joke at all. His own party did not care for him, now he wants Obama killed. Couldn't he joke about his failure to attract voters like Obama did? He wished aloud what he would like to see happen to Obama. Couldn't this be viewed as inciting people to commit a crime or conspiring to commit murder? Does his church condone targeting people. When did pointing a gun at someone become a joking matter?

Posted by: JOHN OF CHICAGO | May 17, 2008 1:02 PM

Kennedy met with Kruschev, Nixon met with Mao. They were the biggest terrorists of all time. We negotiated with Kaddafi, and it worked, we are negotiating with Korea, a nuclear terrorist, and the secretaries of defense and state are negotiating with Iran. whether the president gets personally involved depends on when the timing is right, as in Kennedy and Nixon. Negotiating doesn't imply a tea party, nor does it imply that you think the other side will be nice if you are nice. It isn't naive at all. If I were the president and wanted to tell Kruschev that we would nuke Moscow if missles were deployed in Cuba, it might make sense to do it in person. The issue isn't whether you talk, it's what message you deliver.

What's McCains problem with personally delivering the message that we will turn Iran in to a large lake if they move against Israel, and into a small lake if they keep supplying Iraq radicals with weopons to use against Americans? Whose afraid?

Posted by: JoeT1 | May 17, 2008 12:55 PM

What's with these "macho" Republicans and their guns? And what do they have against smart people? They call them "elite"? Call me crazy - but don't we want our president to be MORE intelligent than average? In fact, I think we should impose an POTUS IQ test from now on. George W. Bush bragged about his C- average, and was often described as intellectually uncurious. Look where that got us! McCain is another academic underachiever, who, in spite of all his years in politics, shows little comprehension of economics and other important issues. Barack Obama outshines them all, based on his intelligence and, most importantly, GOOD JUDGEMENT.

When I first read Mr Huckabee's comments I was stunned by how insensitive they were, especially coming from a man of the cloth. Then I listened to the video clip and the joke seems contrived. That was a really long joke to deliver impromptu and delivery seemed rehearsed and unnatural. That remark and its timing bear the hallmark of one man, Karl Rove. Would it surprise anyone if Huckabee's comments were planned ahead of time?

Posted by: Liquid Kev | May 17, 2008 12:37 PM

This was not an apology. He should say that he was wrong for saying what he said. Is he not supposed to be a preacher, or even a former "man of God". Well, if these are the type of callous people that are trying to lead this country, it is evident what type of character is in play here.

Even some of the posters are displaying this same character, after all this is the comment section of an article that this guy made about somebody being harmed if not killed. I cannot phathom how he would even think that this is funny. It goes to show what he has inside him - - it is rotten, rank to the point of stinking. I am applauded. I will send him light as he I hope seek after being a victim of darkness.

The point is: would Obama stand up for this country or will he run and hide??

I believe Obama is yellow.

Simple and Trust. Obama does not stand for a strong national defense.

Obama wants to run from the fight in Iraq, abandon the young democracy in Iraq.

McCain stands for a strong national defense, never backing down from a fight, and making sure our national security is strong.

If you think you are going to run, and they wont come after you, you are wrong.

A weak national defense does nothing more than risk another 9/11 -

this isn't the Woman's Garden Club we are talking about here - we are talking about the Middle East, a very dangerous place full of tribal history and religious infighting.

The World is not an easy place.

If you think that Middle East is like going to tea with the Woman's Garden Club, you are making a serious mistake.

Linda M.

You simply do not get it - the point of the joke was to say that Obama would run from a fight and hide.

Obama would negotiate with terrorists.

Obama would cave in when the national security was at stake.

Linda M. you are a very sad person to not directly deal with the issue.

If you do not believe the terrorists want to do this country harm, go to ground zero.

Obama wants to be friends with the terrorists, like his friend William Ayers

William Ayers' group bombed the Pentagon and the Capitol building, for those who are not aware.

It's not the proper course for this nation

Obama is wrong for this nation.

Obama will not conduct a strong foreign poilcy for this nation.

Posted by: The Truth | May 17, 2008 12:23 PM

To Kim; It is uninformed people like you with distorted views and opinions that still cling to the belief that Mr. Obama is a Muslim and other such nonsense. First, Mr. Obama was not raised with privilege. He was raised by a single mom who was on food stamps and welfare. I am not saying at times he and his mother did not receive help from her "white" parents, I am sure they did. However, if you are so naive to think that the comments of Mr. Huckabee are not offensive, then I want you to "WAKE UP"! Get out of dream land. The first black man to potentially become president of the United States of America is a target for any radical, ignorant thinking idiot out there, especially one's with guns. Since, the NRA says that "guns don't kill people, people do", I believe that. So you joke about someone hitting the floor because they saw someone pointing a gun at them. Should I equate that statement or distort it as someone could do that Mr. Huckabee advocate pre-mediated murder. No! But joking about someone, a human being, a living human being, possibly being the "target" of someone by having a gun pointed at them is not a joke! It is in extremely poor taste! Black, white, polka dotted, I don't care, pointing guns at individuals is NOT A JOKE!

Posted by: Linda M. | May 17, 2008 12:21 PM

The democrats who comment on here - they are even more offensive than Obama's bitterness comment about clinging to guns and religion.

The democrats are elitist, and they are looking down on the middle class in this country who are not like them and their starbucks drinking ways.

Go waste another $ 4 on a cup of coffee and keep your offensive comments to yourself.

Posted by: Grant | May 17, 2008 12:05 PM

What concerns me is that these words rolled off of Huckabee's tongue with relative ease.

1. Why would you even joke about pointing a gun at someone?

2. And under what circumstance would you - anybody - point a gun at someone?

Such dark thoughts by a man of the cloth.

Posted by: trl | May 17, 2008 11:58 AM

Was Huckabee's choice of joke in total bad taste - YES
Was it meant to say something more than that - NO

Huckabee all during his campaign and now afterwards has been talked about for cracking jokes all throughout the airtime he gets. Perhaps the media attention to his "funniness" has perhaps gone to his head and he felt during the interruption he had to inject some comic relief. I am in no way excusing what he said but he was at the meeting of the NRA after all and the location should be taken into some account. I wonder whether there would have been the outcry if he had said Hillary since she has been ridiculed as "Annie Oakley in a duck blind" lately.
For those now previewing assassination attempts etc., now that is going over the top. Are we now in our Obama worship elevating him again to the likes of MLK and JFK and starting this meme as well? I am sorry but Huckabee's bad tastelss joke to me is far less damaging to the mindset than now trying to put Obama on the pedestal of importance that death threats are now the order to think about. I don't hear anyone worrying about an attempt against Clinton and if it being raised because of his race, does that mean the US is not at a level of acceptability to elect an African American President after all?

HILARIOUS, like setting of some Chinese firecrackers in a college lecture hall to watch the kids dive for cover.

GOOD-NATURED FUN, like murmuring that the bomb vest is too tight while in an airport boarding-pass line.

IN GOOD TASTE, like McCain singing "Bomb Iran."

McCain, here's your VP candidate!

GO HUCKABUTT GO!

A goodly number of voters, especially young people, have been quoted as ssaaying they fear for Obama's life if he gets too successful. That joke was in extremely poor taste, especially since Clinton has been running around talking up "white people." There are plenty of sick people in this country who want their 15 minutes of fame, or perhaps infamy is more like it.

Posted by: nclwtk | May 17, 2008 10:52 AM

Huck's comment came directly from Obama's own statement about people in small towns clinging to guns and religion. Obviously Obama is afraid of guns and religion. I don't think it would matter if he was white, green or purple, the joke would have been the same. Nobody (well nobody with a brain) is under any disillusionment that Obama comes from an inner city where drive-bys are the norm. Obama grew up in a priviledged white world with his white mother and his white grandparents and has had opportunities that most of us only long for. Huck on the other hand is from the real world. Perhaps you should stop looking at the color of a person's skin and start looking at their character before you make assumptions.

But Huckabee's so-called "joke" was totally devoid of any humor - especially coming from a "preacher". It should be OFFENSIVE to all people. I guess we just got a glimpse of the REAL Huckabee and lots of people don't like what they see. So, I guess Huckabee is where he should be; out of the presidential race looking for a day job!

You may not be aware of this because Obama has told his people he didn't want to make an issue of it. But his campaign offices have been vandalized and spray painted with racial slurs. His canvassers have been threatened and called names as they tried to do their jobs. People making phone calls hear "I will never vote for a n***r.. One older woman had to quit because she could not take it anymore. White workers have been threatened and called n***r lovers. Offices have had bomb threats and it goes on. None of this have been publicized because Obama said not to. The NY times did some on it but it has just been played down at Obama's request. Obama is far from a crybaby. He has special security that try to stay in the background so as to not look different from the other candidates. He is the only candidate who fears for his life. Jokes about assassination just are not funny.

I love Mike Huckabee and his humor, but this was way out of line. I wish he were the nominee instead of McCain. Huck dude you are a pastor, need to give a huge apology to the man and his family. I'd hate to see something happen and Huckabee go down in history with part of the blame. Not only that but it would be a huge JFK conspiracy thing, everyone would think the Republicans were behind it. Huckabee is a great guy, he just goofed up big time and needs to make it right. Even if he just gives Obama a call or something.

Posted by: Tony | May 17, 2008 6:18 AM

Interesting: Gov. Huckabee is the author of a book called KIDS THAT KILL: "...Proposing a return to family values, this book encourages everyone to learn from the horrors that struck such communities as Jonesboro and Paducah." Now he makes a joke about a gun being pulled on a Democrat. Shows how fake he is.

Posted by: FamilyValues | May 17, 2008 6:11 AM

He just gave McCain the excuse to not pick him for VP. (because I don't think McCain wanted Huckabee as VP) But if he does to appease (where have we heard that word before) the neo-cons it tells you something about McCain also.

Not even a bad joke, in view of history, it IS not a joke. It may have been meant as a joke.

Posted by: Mike | May 17, 2008 6:07 AM

Geesh what an idiotic thing to say. I like Huckabee but this was not a good idea. And the apology was one of them non-apologies. I think he may have released another one but the first one was kinda,"If my joke insulted you it was not my intention", that isn't an apology. You just gave looneys the idea and/or permission to kill a nominee for President, "joked" about it (after many people are worried about that very thing happening) and you make it sound like if someone is offended they are being overly sensitive?

Posted by: Crom | May 17, 2008 6:03 AM

IMO this is MUCH worse then the Rev Wright thing. Rev Wright is just an old bitter man who said some crazy things. Huckabee could get a nominee for President assassinated.

Posted by: Chan | May 17, 2008 5:58 AM

WOW! Why would anyone "joke" like this? After JFK, Bobby and MLK this is just wrong. This could stir up some racist nut to try to hurt Obama. I can't beleive someone who is supposed to be a Christian and a man of the cloth would ever even make a joke like that, if it is a joke.

Posted by: Jenny | May 17, 2008 5:54 AM

Bush started a war with lies.
Ruined the economy.
Outed a CIA member for political reasons.
Targeted political foes with false crimes, and firings.
Admittedly committed war crimes.

Does anyone really think they won't do anything to keep power? Do you really think they won't do anything to protect themselves against prosecution of said war crimes? The only way they can avoid it is to keep some control so in a worse case scenerio there is always the pardon option.

Bush's admitted war crimes:

Last week contractors were in CA court accused of torture. They committed the same acts that were approved by the White House, in a recent interview Bush said he approved these acts. If these people are found guilty of torture and war crimes, then the President will be charged, it may be through the international courts brought by countries not friendly with the U.S., but how can we deny it when our own courts ruled it was torture, a war crime and the President is on video saying he approved the acts? we will probably ignore it but it is a sad day in U.S. history when the POTUS is even charge with war crimes. Can these people ruin America any worse then they have?

Posted by: Lanny | May 17, 2008 5:49 AM

I am a republican and have always liked Huckabee, but politics aside this was WAY out of line. Bordering on criminal, because there are too many crazies out there who would follow his "joke". What is Huckabee going to do if something did happen? he is partly to blame. I am now questioning who the real huckabee is, I thought he was different, not like the Bush/Cheney group. Has he always been like this and hid it well? Is he trying to fit into the Evil group because he really wants to be VP? THIS is a Christian? This is a clergyman?

I can see why the Republican party has lost it's way, they are mean spirited, lying and evil. The sooner Bush and this crowd is gone the better.

I am a proud life long Republican, I voted for Reagan and the first Bush and these people aren't republicans. This whole era has been a disgrace to the Republican party and terrible for America. Now I wonder if there are any REAL Republicans left.

To Rat-The, You must be a 16 year old kid who has no concept of reality let alone the horrors of war. You probably think killing is just like the video games you play. When you have a 13 year old Iraqie kid point an AK-47 at your brother on patrol, you take him down. I have to live with taking that life. On my second tour, I finally woke up and realized we should have never been there. My brother and sisters over there should never have lost there lives because we shouln't have been in this war. WE WERE LIED TO. You weren't there so you have no idea. You just want to believe the Right Wing media and politicians who have no clue what is going on there. You think Bill O' Reilly is god. They have no clue, their just blow-hard hypocrites. Why did I join the Marine Corp...to defend your freedom. To call me a POS American, you not only insult me but you insult every soldier who joined with the belief that when we fight for our country we are fighting for everthing that is great about America. I didn't join the Corp to kill people, though I knew that was part of my job. My job as a soldier was fighting for the United States of America,to bring the fight to our enemy defending what is great about our country, to die defending the freedom YOU TAKE FOR GRANTED. I didn't join the Corp to fight for the lies of a corrupt president. Your right, no one forced me to join but After Sept. 11th I joined the Marines to defend our country, your freedom, the same freedom you just used to insult me. I didn't join thinking that MY PRESIDENT would warmonger putting me and thousands of soldiers in an illegitimate war. Call me nieve, but like many Americans at the time I was fooled. No one could believe OUR president could have his administration fabricate an entire war. I was wrong in believing in that and I will have to live with the consequences of my own actions. But I will not make that mistake twice in a row...now I am trying to do the right thing, to correct the mistakes I've made. Doing everthing I can to get us out of this war is my new fight, and Obama gives us the best chance. Like I said before in an earlier post here..."if you can send your "own" child, not someone elses, to go fight in Iraq becaude you believe in it that much, by all means vote for Mccain, but if you can't, you'll know why as a proud Republican, I'm voting for Obama. " and to Rat-The, perhaps one day you will understand why as a soldier it was an honor to defend my country but a dishonor to fight for Bush and CO. like I said earlier I fought for my brothers and sisters over there, because God knows fools like yourself didn't have our backs here. Hopefully when I die God will able to forgive me for the lives I took in this illegitimate war, because I surely can't. I doubt your beloved president bush & co. has any trouble sleeping at night. God bless you America...I hope you do the right thing this time around.

There is no apology he could offer that could ever soften up his obvious disdain and hatred for Sen Obama. His words said it all. I am an independent, on the fence and will be until November. But I
