Obama Resigns Church Membership
Updated 9:15 p.m.
By Keith Richburg
ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Sen. Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, resigned their membership in the South Side Chicago church that had been their spiritual home for two decades but which, in recent months, had become a political liability in Obama's campaign for the presidency.
The Obamas announced their decision in a letter to Trinity United Church of Christ's Rev. Otis Moss III on Friday, saying, "We are writing to make official our decision to end our membership at Trinity."
"We make this decision with sadness. Trinity was where I found Christ, where we were married and where our children were baptized," the letter said. "But as you know, our relations with Trinity have been strained by the divisive statements of Reverend Wright, which sharply conflict with our own view."
Obama's unexpected decision came after a second controversy involving incendiary remarks from a pastor at the Trinity United Church of Christ, this time the Roman Catholic Rev. Michael Pfleger, who sharply ridiculed Sen. Hillary Clinton in a sermon last Sunday.
Obama scheduled an unplanned news conference Saturday evening here in Aberdeen, after news of the resignation began to spread. In the half-hour news conference, Obama said he and Michelle had been discussing leaving the church since his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.'s theatrical and controversial appearance at the National Press Club in late April.
"It's not a decision I came to lightly, and it's one I make with some sadness," Obama said. But, he added, now that he is a presidential candidate, opponents were using the pastors' words to criticize him.
Obama said he never anticipated the storm of controversy his membership in Trinity Church would ignite. "This was one I didn't see coming," he said. "I did not anticipate my fairly conventional Christian faith being subject to such challenge and such scrutiny."
He also said his heightened profile was drawing unwelcome attention to the church. "It's also clear that Reverend Moss and the church have been suffering from all the attention my campaign has visited on them."
"I have no idea how it will impact my presidential campaign, but it's the right thing to do, for my church and for my family," he said.
Asked about choosing a new church, and whether he would more carefully vet his next pastor, Obama said, "I'm not going to approach this as a political exercise." He said in "whatever church you join," pastors may say things that members disagree with. But, answering a question, he acknowledged that joining another black church might be equally problematic. "There's a different religious tradition, or a worshiping style, in some of the African American churches," he said.
"I'm confident we're going to be able to find a church we're comfortable with," he added.
"Our faith remains strong," Obama said. "I suspect that we will find another church home for our family."
Just a few weeks ago, Obama was forced to distance himself from Rev. Wright, after videotapes surfaced of Wright making critical comments about the United States and suggesting AIDS was a U.S. government plot against blacks.
Wright had introduced Obama to Christianity, and one of Wright's sermons was the inspiration for Obama's book title, "The Audacity of Hope."
Obama said he put his decision in writing to Rev. Moss on Friday, and only talked about it today after the letter was leaked to CNN. Asked when he intended to announce his resignation, he said, "This was a pretty personal decision, and I wasn't trying to make political theater out of it."
Trinity Church also released a statement today, made available by Obama's campaign and signed by the pastor, Rev. Moss, that said, "Though we are saddened by the news, we understand that is a personal decision."
"We will continue to lift them in prayer and wish them the best as former members of our Trinity community," the letter said. "We ask now for God's peace to be with them."

GOD BLESS AMERICA OUR HOME. Harvard Scholar Barack Obama.
Americans are too smart to fall for diabolical divisive Republican tricks.
Leave out divisive hate mongering (race, gender, religion).
Barack
Focus on the ECONOMY, HOMES, IRAQ WAR, OIL, ENERGY, FAMILY, MORALITY, INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP, AND ONE AMERCA.
Barack Obama has a wonderful, loving, intelligent and spiritual family with high morals. This is exactly what is expected of the First Family.
If Hillary didn't run such a trashy campaign, then the American People would have been more responsive to her message whatever that was.
The dysfunctional Clintons (Billy, Hillary, Monica) disgraced the White House and will never be allowed to do that again.
Hillary's message whatever that was got lost in all of her hate, racist, and sexist mongering, which was not beneficial to Americans. McCentury McCain is doing the same, because he lacks an agenda except Bush's policies of continued failures.
Americans, Europeans and the World are under the impression that Rich Republicans are pathological liars and thieves. And they are right. False statements, cheating and undermining Democratic values are Republican tools to hurt mankind in their selfish destructive quest to own and control this beautiful world that's temporarily enjoyed by all.
Republican Failures McCain-Bush must answer to the fact that a barrel of Oil was $24 when Bush took office and now a barrel of Oil is $135. Republican rich Oil conspiracy has undermined the American People and Our Economy in their quest for selfish, destructive and greedy ill gotten super-capitalistic Wall Street gains.
MCCAIN-BUSH SEVEN YEARS AGO CHANGED A BARREL OF OIL FROM $24 INTO TODAY'S SUPER-CAPITALISTIC GREEDY OUT OF CONTROL $135.
WILL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SIT ON THEIR HANDS AND ALLOW MCCAIN-BUSH CONTINUED OUT OF CONTROL WALL STREET SUPERCAPITALISTIC GREED TO RAISE A BARREL OF OIL TO $200?
THE PRICE OF OIL IS A NATIONAL EMERGENCY. OIL SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY NATIONALIZED FOR UNITED STATES NATIONAL DEFENSE.
REPUBLICAN FAILURES MCCAIN-BUSH WITHIN SEVEN YEARS CHANGED A $24 BARREL OF OIL INTO A $135 BARREL OF OIL.
WERE THE REPUBLICAN FAILURES MCCAIN-BUSH SERVING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE OR SERVING THEIR SUPER-RICH FRIENDS WHEN THEY HELP CHANGE THE PRICE OF A BARREL OF OIL FROM $24 TO $135 IN JUST SEVEN YEARS?
IT'S TIME TO NATIONALIZE U.S. OIL AND THE ENERGY INDUSTRIES FOR NATIONAL DEFENSE.
300,000,000 Americans come first when it comes to the greatest benefits to the greatest number. When one percent of the population (super rich), owns and runs everything to the destruction of the ninety nine percent (typical Americans), then something must change. McCain-Bush represents greed and destruction that must stop.
If you love America, then you should inspire the American People to rise higher and HOPE for better days.
America is HOPEFUL and GREAT and will follow the HOPEFUL and INSPIRATIONAL message of Harvard Scholar Barack Obama.
This is the greatest presidential race in history, because Harvard Scholar Barack Obama is flying like an eagle.
GOD BLESS AMERICA OUR HOME. Harvard Scholar Barack Obama.
Barack Obama loves America and the troops.
Barack Obama will work with the international community to end the Iraq War in 2009.
Barack Obama will bring American troops home in 2009 and reward them with benefits for homes, college, medical care, and jobs.
American troops are overwhelmingly voting for Barack Obama
EUROPE, CHINA, RUSSIA, SAUDI ARABIA, AND SOUTH AMERICA ARE WATCHING YOU
THE WORLD IS WATCHING AMERICA'S 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
THE WORLD IS WATCHING AMERICA'S 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
THE WORLD IS WATCHING AMERICA'S 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
AND THE WORLD WILL JUDGE WHETHER AMERICA IS SUITED TO BE ITS MORAL LEADER.
AND THE WORLD WILL JUDGE WHETHER AMERICA IS SUITED TO BE ITS MORAL LEADER.
AND THE WORLD WILL JUDGE WHETHER AMERICA IS SUITED TO BE ITS MORAL LEADER.
London, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Madrid, Rome, Tokyo, Peking, and the other capitals all look forward to cooperating with President Barack Obama.
McCain and Bush with their policies of failures are afraid to stand on stage with Harvard Scholar Barack Obama.
McCain and Bush have petitioned to have a dictionary at their disposal to keep up with Barack Obama's intellectual discourse.
McCain's public insults towards his own wife and Bush's public insults towards the AMERICAN PEOPLE have precluded them from moral judgment upon the World. McCain-Bush lacks moral and intellectual credibility to sit in judgment of the World and serve the AMERICAN PEOPLE.
AMERICA is voting in an intellectual scholar from Harvard Law to right OUR COUNTRY and prosecute the criminal super-capitalists.
The World is watching how a self professed Christian Moral Nation handles its pivotal point in history during the 2008 presidential election.
Will AMERICA rise to the occasion with maturity, dignity, intellect and grace?
Or will AMERICA degenerate into the Republican's Policy of Hate?
Will Republicans again toss evil words of hate to OUR PUBLIC and promote a filthy campaign worthy of pre-WWII Germany?
This is a pivotal time in AMERICAN history.
Will AMERICA run a dignified 2008 presidential election?
Or will AMERICA allow Hillbillies to take over the media and orchestrate the message of hate that will shock the watching World?
A barrel of oil was $24 when Bush took office.
It's time for AMERICA to nationalize Oil and Energy Industries for National Defense.
Rich Oil billionaires and Wall Street (super-capitalism) selling out OUR COUNTRY THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA for their own selfish profits is unpatriotic and treason.
AMERICA belongs to AMERICANS and not to Wall Street sell-out super-capitalists who send trillions of OUR U.S. DOLLARS overseas in chase of the highest immediate return on their private investments. Greed does not work and greed is destroying OUR COUNTRY. Dependence on foreign oil and oil billionaire businessmen are destroying OUR COUNTRY.
Immediately nationalize oil and energy industries for U.S. National Defense. It's the intelligent thing to do. AMERICANS are collectively much more important than a handful of billionaire super-capitalists on Wall Street who have allegiance to no one, but their own private, selfish, destructive, and nation undermining capital gains.
Hillary does not appear very patriotic staying in a loss race strictly to gather more money to store in her $109,000,000 favor money chest that she and Billy received from South American cartels.
Is Hillary working for the Democrats?
Is Hillary working for All AMERICANS?
Hillary is working for herself and has become and unpatriotic joke.
McCentury McSame (Bush Part III) wants to continue Bush's failed policies.
McSame (Bush III) is not very smart and will go after Hillary's Hillbilly and pig farmers votes.
MCCAIN-BUSH (POLICIES OF FAILURES) HAS A LOT TO ANSWER FOR:
WAR FOUGHT ON THE PREMISE OF UPROOTING WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION THAT WERE NEVER FOUND,
THE FAILURE TO CATCH OSAMA BIN LADEN,
MCCAIN-BUSH DISGRACEFUL PROCLAMATION "MISSION ACCOMPLISH"
MCCAIN-BUSH ASSUMPTION THAT WE WOULD BE GREETED AS LIBERATORS AND NOT INVADERS
MCCAIN-BUSH INVASION OF OUR WHITE HOUSE (AMERICA HOUSE)
TURNING IRAN INTO THE "GREATEST BENEFICIARY" OF THE IRAQ WAR
MANIPULATING THE PRICE OF OIL FROM $24.00 A BARREL TO $135.00 A BARREL. WHOSE INTEREST ARE THEY LOBBYING FOR? MCCAIN-BUSH POLICIES ARE NOT IN AMERICA'S INTEREST.
PLANS TO KEEP AMERICAN TROOPS IN IRAQ FOR 100 YEARS
PLANS TO INITIATE THE DRAFT TO SECURE ENOUGH TROOPS
These are just a few of McCain-Bush policies of failures that must stop.
AMERICA needs change now in a better direction.
Harvard Scholar Barack Obama will demonstrate how McCain-Bush has hurt OUR COUNTRY.
THE WORLD IS WATCHING HOW A SELF PROFESSED CHRISTIAN MORAL NATION HANDLES ITS PIVOTAL POINT IN HISTORY DURING THE 2008 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
EUROPE IS LOOKING FORWARD TO RENEWING FRIENDSHIP AND COOPERATION WITH THE UNITED STATES THROUGH PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA.
THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF AMERICAN SOLDIERS ARE VOTING FOR BARACK OBAMA
THE WORLD IS WATCHING ONE AMERICA.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
IT'S OFFICIAL, HILLARY CLINTON IS TRASH.
You thought that Hillary's stupidity could no sink lower and it did.
Hillary Clinton has run the worst and trashiest campaign in U.S. history and now she is not worthy to continue her carpetbagger position in the adopted state of New York.
It's fitting that Hillary is a carpetbagger for New York, considering that New York sold out the Americans and housed the British troops during the entire time of the American Revolution.
Everyone is ashamed of Hillary Clinton's trashy ways.
Tell Bill and Monica that they will never again deface the honor of the White House.
Republican McCentury McCain is a weak nominee and lack the intelligence to receive the 3:00 am call from Monica calling for Bill.
Hillary and Billy (HillBilly) Clinton must immediately return the $109,000,000 favor money to the South American cartels, because their criminal political influence is over.
Americans are tired of corruption from Bush, Clinton and the old ways of McCain-Bush.
Super capitalistic privileged C- students with no business running a hotdog stands are illegally placed in the highest positions because of their ill gotten wealth.
Greed and stupidity are destroying Our Country and it must stop.
America must get back to moral decency, family values, respect, honor, scholarship, and service to the general Public.
America is about Public Service and not private greed.
Change is happening and America, Europe and the World welcome cooperation.
We The People Are Voting For Change.
"Clinton is sick," President Ford told DeFrank in 1999, the year the Senate acquitted Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice in an impeachment trial stemming from his affair with Monica Lewinsky. "He's got an addiction. He needs treatment." Ford said Clinton had "damaged his presidency beyond repair."
President Ford told DeFrank that Clinton was brazen in his attentions to other women even when the then-president visited the Fords at their Colorado home in 1993. "I'll tell you one thing: He didn't miss one good-looking skirt at any of the social occasions," President Ford told DeFrank.
"Clinton got a wandering eye, I'll tell you that. Betty had the same impression. Clinton isn't very subtle about his interest."
President Ford described talking with Clinton during the impeachment debate and pressing him to admit that he lied to federal investigators and accept censure.
"Bill Clinton," President Ford recalled saying, "I think you have to admit that you lied. If you do that, I think that will help -- and I'll help you. If you'll admit to perjury, I'll do more."
"I won't do that," Clinton replied. "I can't do that."
As for Hillary Clinton, President Ford saw her as the driving force in their marriage. By 2002, President Ford was predicting that Hillary Clinton would be on the ticket in 2004 or 2008 but would lose the general election because the country is not yet "ready for Hillary Clinton."

I'm not an Obama-supporter, but those comments by Pflegler could have been seen on SNL or a Dave Chappelle skit. It was hilarious. Why should Obama have to answer for someone else's good time? He is throwing a whole lot of friends under the bus for this election and for what? The people who don't like him simply don't like him. His membership resignation and repudiations aren't going to change their minds. He's going to be real lonely after he loses in November. (And for those who think the WaPo is deleting entries that make Obama look bad, a big whatev! There's tons of Obama-hating on this website.)

And has anyone honestly and transparently seen McCain distance himself from either Pastor John Hagee or Rod Parsley? It's more of the same hypocritical double standards from the typical media controlled Republican attack machine via the likes of Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh. I have to laugh when people make the audacious claim Obama has done too little too late to distance himself from Rev. Wright but, maybe we should be asking ourselves who McCain has affliated himself with for the past 20 years. From the looks of it, McCain has associated himself with religious figures with equally hateful and incendiary speech. If that weren't bad enough, one of McCain's long time friends and personal advisors Joe Lieberman said he would attend a summit in Washington with Pastor John Hagee if McCain wouldn't. They are associated with each other. What's to say that Lieberman isn't speaking to Hagee on McCain's behalf? And vice versa? Almost as if Lieberman were acting as McCain's middle man. Should make everyone stand up and think about all this smoke and mirrors BS. More typical neo-con deceptiveness going on right under our radar but, no one in the media seems to be turning their attention to them. McCain is just as guilty of religious pandering to boost his popular vote. First he told everyone he was Baptist, then a few weeks later he told everyone he was an Episcopalian. Then he decided to pander votes with the endorsements of a Baptist and Pentecostal minister? McCain has done enough neo-con, religious flip flopping in the attempt to manipulate and consolidate the conservative vote without adequately answering any questions regarding the contraversial pasts of his Pastors. For McCain, he simply says, I denounce my affiliation with these contraversial Pastors and their disturbing remarks, yet the media all point their fingers at Obama. The character or credibility of any political figures, including McCain should be scrutinized objectively, not solely from a one sided point of view. Considering Lieberman's ties to both McCain and Pastor John Hagee, I simply don't believe his problem just "went away." Like any deceptive politician, it simply went behind closed doors.

Is America ready for a female president? a black man president? I don't think so. Obama deserts his church, his people and flirts with white people who endorse him. What are the odds that Obama will win against the ancient and wise McCain? well lets say the republicans may not have wanted Hillary to win so they take the black man and endorse him even though they know he isn't goin to win. Seeing that he was ahead of Rodham, the republicans may have brought up the racism issue to tarnish him so he fails in november against their own. Where is Rodham Clinton? She is out there fighting hard to help all of us including Obama(to save him from being used by the system that doesn't like female leaders and black presidents). Obama has no solid foundation but will betray anyone to pursue his ambitions. Plus once he becomes a president, the nation will fall back into bitterness and racial wars that will cripple our already falling economy.

3-4 snippets out of 30 years worth of sermons - sheesh - and in context not so far off
And what's so damning about the quotes from his book? They aren't racist at all! READ it, use the context, consider and acknowledge that there were issues that he had to deal with as he grew up that us 'whites' never even had to think about. He's brave, and I'm sad that he had to leave his church, but I understand, and he and his family can come to mine any day. I left a 'white' church because they preached that gays were evil and cursed. Should I have stayed because I'd been there 5 years?

Enough with the feigned indignation already. Obama is damned if he quits his church, and damned if he doesn't. Just admit it - you guys are a bunch of racists and will not vote for a black guy. Ever.

Do you believe his "great speech" would be so great now? I'm mean since he has dropped them?

Obama's Chickens Come Home to Roost too little, too late. The Wright controversy had revealed a major character flaw and calls into question his judgment once again and truthfulness of the candidate whose entire appeal has been based on character. Wright is like an uncle you love and respect As imperfect as he may be, he has been family to me for so many years, I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community" "I can no more disown him [Jeremiah Wright] than I can disown my white grandmother." a woman who once confessed her fear of black men after a black man had tried to shake her down for money. She gave him some, but he kept demanding more. "If the bus hadn't come, I think he might have hit me over the head," Obama says she told him. Rev Wright was right! Obama speech is ONLY for political purposes after the severe drop in polls!
Obama is now declaring himself shocked and disappointed at Wright's unrepentantly racist and anti-American views? Obamas obviously support his feelings of anti-America and white hatred that the church endorses to stay for 20 years and raise young daughters in that atmosphere Obama can no longer plausibly claim innocence in this matter, because he is the one who has encouraged Wright by trying to excuse and explain his views. All of this is why it is no use for Obama to backpedal from his association with Reverend Wright, or to denounce him six weeks after publically defending shows Obama cannot be trusted on his word.... It was Obama who sought to provide the Reverend Wright with immunity from criticism--and he can't complain when the reverend tries to take full advantage of that immunity. This is the final collapse of the noble promise of the Obama campaign. The man who had once put himself forward as the candidate who would transcend racial politics once and for all has ended up legitimizing a Christian equivalent of Louis Farrakhan--and injecting him into the American political debate. http://www.dontvoteobama.net

We already have a parallel by which to gauge what will happen in this country should Barack Obama get elected: O.J. Simpson. The so-called trial of the century is a perfect template by which to measure what will happen between black and white in this country after Obama takes the White House. You'll recall that guilt and innocence closely followed the racial divide between black and white while the O.J. trial was on going. Blacks by and large assumed he was innocent of the charges of murder. Oh, they didn't necessarily know what the evidence against him was, nor did they care. The assumptions of innocence that many blacks evinced for O.J. was built on their feelings that whites are racists and that, therefore, O.J. must be being railroaded by the white establishment. Worse, there were many blacks that didn't even care if O.J. was guilty. they wanted him free just to get even with the white justice system that they so despised. By and large, blacks in America gave O.J. a pass and his case was used as a way to attack the legal system quite regardless of the merits and evidence of the case.
Many whites, on the other hand, felt he was guilty based on the evidence they heard

Oh get over it. You sound like a broken record. Stop passing judgement on things that you don't know.
You don't know how often Barack actually heard divisive messages in church. I'm sure he heard messages about the racism of America, but there IS a such thing as racism in America and YES black people do talk about it!!
Barack is running for president not Jeremiah Wright.

larry777 - Quit your fear-mongering with regards to Clinton supporters voting for McCain. You neglect the fact that Democrats are expected to take larger majorities in Congress. It is my belief they will take their filibuster-proof majority which would keep McCain in check. If McCain wanted to nominate Alito and Roberts-like Justices, guess what? The Democrats will vote them down. If McCain wants to veto progressive legislation passed by Democrats or veto attempts to bring out troops home, the Democrats will simply override his vetoes.
So quit your fear-mongering because it isn't going to work! The DNC and its RBC need to be punished and voting for McCain is the best way to punish them!

This guy obviously used this church and its pastor to gain political advantage in the Chicago political community many years ago. This church was fine for him, Michelle, and the children until he felt he had to appeal to white people, it was then that he began the distancing process. First dis-inviting Reverend Wright from speaking at his announcing for president event, then throwing him under the bus for the well known remarks, now selling out the entire church!
If Obama will sell out his entire church, its new pastor, and its members, he'd certainly be capable of anything once President. He admitted today during the press conference to announce that he'd resigned from the church, that it had been several months since he'd even attended services. This guy is revealing himself to be quite the poser. I'm out, won't vote for him under any circumstances now.

I support Hillary Clinton.
There are penalties for breaking rules. EVERYBODY on that Committee including Hillary's supporters (like Ickes, who passed the penalties in the first place), knew that a full reinstatement was not going to happen. The formula Democrats followed in halving delegate votes is the same one the Republicans followed.
You can be as angry as you want about the process not advantaging Hillary, that is your right; but don't pretend it's because somehow the right to fairness and justice have been perverted. It's an insult to our intelligence to suggest so and I refuse to engage in intellectual dishonesty.
Hillary mismanaged her campaign and was outsmarted by a better opponent, her chance is gone and I want a Democrat in the White House more than I want Hillary in the White House.

"What is more ... voters in Florida and Michigan are only half the citizens, half the voters, half the human beings because that's the only way Obama can declare victory on Tuesday night.
Am I just dreaming or is it that Democratic Party just committed self-immolation and handed over the White House to the Republicans?

ithinker needs help. Ithinker obviously has not kept up with this primary situation in MI or FL or what Sen. Clinton said.
I, for one, like to play by the rules, whatever they are. To change rules after the game has been played or even during the playing of the game is not fair under any circumstance. Both candidates have presented appeals that MI and FL votes be recognized.
The math is too daunting for Sen. Clinton under any situation. She is the one who decided that the caucuses should be avoided. This was a decision that she and her campaign made without any rulings by the DNC. To support the intent of the DNC rules and based on materials that the Obama campaign received, he decided not to have his name placed in the Michigan primary. It is too his credit and the credit of the other candidates who did similarly that as many voters showed up to vote "uncommitted."
Who would have ever guessed that the Democratic Party would have fielded two such stellar candidates for this election cycle? Unfortunately for Hillary, she led her campaign down the path of sarcasm and theatrics. Bill Clinton also got caught up in a campaign style that I have not seen him do before. Both Clintons have been tarnished as a result of this campaign.
McCain is not a viable candidate for the Republicans. However, it looks like our infighting may give the country worse than Bush III. McCain is proving his senility on a daily basis. Without his handlers, he would be no where.
Hillary has her own baggage. She wants to get things done, but was instrumental in the failed attempt to get healthcare reform when assigned this task by husband Bill. She has the highest negative ratings of any candidate before the American people today. There are people who will not vote for Obama only because he is Black. There are people who will not vote for Hillary because she is Hillary. Sad, but true. I know these people. They are churchgoing Christian people.
Obama has done a courageous thing by resigning his membership in his church of 20 years. I've been in mine for over 30 years and have thought about it many times. If you ask a typical church member in an urban church, I am sure that changing churches has come up in his/her mind more than once. Most people do not change for many reasons, the main one is the problem of building new friendships in a new church. For all intents and purposes, there is a little "conservative" in each one of us. Changing is hard.
Regarding Washington, a change is needed now. Our country is going down a hole and fast. You can thank George Bush that so many Americans have come out to vote for a woman and a black man during these primaries. Think about this, all of you prejudiced people out there.
Of the three candidates left standing, Obama has presented his vision for America in his book, The Audacity of Hope. It is in black and white for all to read. Hillary wrote, It Takes a Village. A nice book, but not one to use as the backbone of a presidential campaign. Obama's book has some of the most profound political writings of the 21st century. The author of this book knows the way. Obama is still the one to carry us forward.

Both major parties deserve to go away.
We've seen what the neo-Republicans can do. But voting Democrat is not going to change the trajectory of government - it will continue to grow in power and scope, and these very charismatic people will continue to sell us on "hope" and "change". I am done buying this from the power climbers in Washington. Obama may be a nice fellow, but he is a climber like all the rest. These people are a special class, and will never make the same sacrifices they ask us to make, ever. I am done voting for more government for government's sake. I am voting libertarian, or "no confidence."

It is sad but necessary that Barack and Michelle Obama have had to resign from Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC). As a UCC member for my whole life, and as the (white) son of a UCC clergyman, I hope that this resignation from Trinity UCC does not end Obama's connection with the UCC as a denomination.
Power in the UCC is very decentralized, and folks in the religious groups with traditional top-down church government (Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Methodist) can't seem to understand that. My father was politically quite liberal, but he believed that it was inappropriate for him to endorse or condemn politicians or political causes during sermons. Pastors of his generation tended to follow that same rule.
TUCC does NOT represent the entire UCC denomination, but is atypical in being very large (~8,000 members) and mostly black. It has gone its own way, and there is no mechanism in place by which the central UCC denominational office can force it to put on the brakes with respect to what can be said from its pulpit.
TUCC has done a lot of good in its community, but would have been an albatross around Obama's neck. It's totally clear that he himself is not a racist; I have read both of his profound books cover to cover. Those who criticize him for resigning, or for not resigning sooner, are overlooking TUCC's record of good works and also the inability of one member family to control what is said from the TUCC pulpit.
I still enthusiastically support Obama for President.

Secular Liberalism in America certainly doesn't work very well, but Christian Conservatism doesn't work at all - 7 Bush/Cheney faith-based government finally proves it. The great shame of the modern American Christian Conservative movement is not that it has hijacked our politics, but that it has hijacked our religion. Our churchly TV pundits are no different our retired TV generals, and no less insidious a threat to both our democracy and our religious heritage. To the average American, religion is a personal issue - the driving force behind all this noise and conflation is from the networks, and after the Pentagon/Media Analyst debacle it's hard not to see all the yapping heads on the news as totally corrupted on this story as well. Obama does well to move on to the issues that real Americans are actually concerned about. The heads on TV should pay attention, lest in the end they roll.....

It sounds like a good number of posters here are sycophants of Rush Limbaugh and Karl Rove continuing to Cause Chaos which the two Ditto-Head-Puppet-Masters instructed you to do.
The rest of the negative posts are evidently angry women who still are supporting Hillary.
This message is for women who desperately want to see a woman elected as President:
1. Hillary was too devisive of a character. She had so much baggage that some of you young women have not even heard of and some of the rest of you older women have evidently forgotten. An 18 year old who is getting to vote for the first time was born in 1990 just as Bill and Hillary were campaigning for their first co-presidency.
2. At present, there are three great women governors who are getting the experience needed to be Presidential candidates in 2016, hopefully the next time we have to change our President.
3. If you want to read about all the baggage the Republicans would have thrown at Hillary, read these two biographies of her: "Hell to Pay" by Barbara Olson and "A Woman in Charge" by Carl Bernstein."
4. Be very cautious in deciding who to vote for in November. Don't throw away your chance to vote for a Democrat. John McCain is very strong on "The Right to Life." If he should win two terms as a Republican President, he will be responsible for appointing 4 judges to the Supreme Court who will change the Supreme Court for decades to come. McCain has stated that he will pick judges who are against abortion. - He wants only "right to life" judges. . . Now even 60% Republican women are "Pro-Choice" in their views on abortion, and some of them are going to move over and vote for a Democrat. How many of you want to give up your right to have an abortion is you should become pregnant as a result of rape or incest or if a doctor told you that you were going to have a severely deformed baby or if a doctor told you that you would die is you didn't abort a baby due to your own physical problems?
Democratic Women - - Think very carefully before you attempt to destroy Barack Obama. Instead, let's unite around our Democratic candidate. We have the chance this year to put a good man in the Presidency for 8 years and to elect many new Democratic Senators and Representatives.
Please don't ruin the Democrats chances to win this November.

There may be a Hillary supporter somewhere who DIDN'T support the invasion of Iraq, but I've never met one, that's for sure.
Posted by: OD | May 31, 2008 8:38 PM

OD:
Well, I'm one.
I'm a Hillary supporter since she ran for the Senate.
And I'm a military wife.
My husband is retired now, after 33 years with the U.S. Army and the Texas Air National Guard as a reservist.
When the war drums began throbbing in the fall of 2002, we turned off the news in this house because my husband, who was still serving at the time, became so upset.
He knew it was coming because his unit had been tooling up for war since the first weekend after Bush was inaugurated in 2001, 9 months BEFORE 9/11.
9/11 -- all those people died to afford that venal snake in the White House and his cabal an excuse to invade Iraq.
All through the fall of 2002, everyone kept saying, "Why Iraq?"
No one could answer that question.
We all knew the sales campaign was a crock.
My husband was summoned to serve in Kuwait, but because of some medication he was taking and his age, was held back, and given his retirement papers.
As one after the other, the administrations paper-mache excuses were ripped away, nothing surprised us.
We knew it was all about a personal vendetta and for the oil, thanks to Cheney's secret meetings.
Later, we found out that the even-larger gold mine the cabal dipped into were the no-bid contracts, the reason why this war was fought "off-budget."
So, OD, don't say you didn't hear from me.

Problem is, as I see it, one day Obama awoke and found himself a viable candidate for President of the United States of America.
I really believe this. It just happened as in a surprise does when winning the lottery.
However, and especially now, it ain't enough to just be very bright and articulate. If we are honest about this the job is really complicated. Now, Bill Clinton was the chief executive of his state for many years. And he is very bright and articulate.
However, we know that he had a difficult time at the job. It got off to what I consider as a somewhat messy start.
And the place wasn't as broken then as it is right now.
So...Mr. Obama has more then his work cut out for him. And I don't care how many "advisors" he has and how competent and experienced those "advisors" are. I care about POLICY, and implementing policy.
And I really have trouble visualizing his hitting the ground running fast and breaking into a sweat. I more visualize him waking up in the job and asking just what the heck have I let myself in for.
As for Mrs. Clinton, well, she's going to need more work then "This Old House" ever did. And that's with all the help of Home Depot and Bob Villas together.

Obama did the right thing. I'm sure it was an agonizing decision for him and his family. But it is obvious that the Repub party will do anything necessary to win. Disenfranchising voters due to the color of their skin, using machines to cheat, and shamelessly mimicking a U.S. war veteran are shameless, nefarious deeds. But the GOP has done it. Wingnut partisan hacks like Karl Rover, FOX News, and the Washington Times will do everything possible to keep a Democrat out of the White House, let alone a person of color. So all things considered, Obama made the right move. No offense, but McCain cannot remember where he is sometimes. Dems can win in November the old fashioned way - by earning it.

Can you spell SET-UP certain staff members of Trinity church, or Father Pfleger must be under-cover CLINTON supporters. This MAKES ABSOLUTLY NO SENSE. Why would his long time church family continue to allow him to be humiliated knowing this type of nonsense could ultimately hurt him? Remember Rev Wright was asked to speak at the white house during President Clinton problems with Monica. I'm sorry that Sen. Obama had to leave his church, church family ties are hard and painful to cut.
However I believe you can listen to divisive, backward, rhetoric and still form an educated opinion based on the truth as you see it. Example "YOUNG BLACK MALES" are told everyday their not smart as WHITE MALES, they will either end up in jail or dead, the only thing their good for is being an athlete, rapper, OR drug dealers. There is never any stereotype surrounding an educated BLACK MALE all the statements above are divisive, but with these types of stereotypes stacked up against them there are those BLACK MALES that still prevail. So yes Obama did attend the church for approximately 20 years but his awareness, integrity, intuitiveness would allow him to formulate an educated opinion on matters he disagrees with.
There is NO other candidate that has the poise, confidence, intellect, and experience in working with all types of people for a common goal other then MY FRIEND Senator Obama.
Please let's learn to walk in another man shoes before we judge a lesson all American's should challenge ourselves on.

Enough with the "what's the big deal about Rev. Wright occasionally being controversial". And, "so what does this have to do with Obama". Just imagine a non-black candidate's preacher and spiritual adviser, disparaging the marital problems of Obama and Michele. Imagine this same preacher speaking in the same tone against a Black American politician, using the N-word. That candidate would rightly be challenged about his association with such a hateful and racist pastor. It would not be enough that a white candidate denounce the pastors words, he would have to explain why he contributed money to the "church". In fact, I don't think Americans would care to hear about White Liberation Theology. This white candidate would be rightly be run out of contention.

Posted by: js_edit | May 31, 2008 10:57 PM | Report abuse
The idea of a President who is from without the expectations of the cultural mainstream is more than a bit confusing to people. I'd also say worrisome to others and a alien to most.
Hence, when looking the issue straight in the face we are looking into a culture that many of us are unfamiliar with.
And if we factor the idea of ABUSE OF BLACK PEOPLE into this, and factor the history of SLAVERY into this, and factor the issue of SCHOOL SEGREGATION into this then we are, perhaps, just now REALIZING THAT THERE JUST MIGHT BE A FEW BLACK PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO JUST MIGHT HARBOR A BIT OR RESENTMENT TOWARD the mainstream of America and it's Character.
However, I gotta believe and I DO believe that Mr. Obama is so much a better prospect to be President than McCain that I will not for a moment hesitate to vote for him.
And I will believe with all of my intellect and with all of my heart that HE WILL DO A WONDERFUL JOB as President. He will begin to repair this BROKEN NATION.
And he will not and I mean NOT allow RESENTMENT to defer to principle when governing our nation.
I BELIEVE HE IS ABOVE THIS. And I believe so because there's going to be nothing to gain from acting on resentment.
He would hurt ALL OF AMERICA by doing so and he knows that.
Just let's be honest with ourselves and believe this is not a petty man. And that he will take his oath of office seriously.
That is a good place to begin.

I implore all of those convinced that the Obamas and members of Trinity are racists to carefully and if need be quietly/privately ask yourself is this your true belief? Why would someone who is really hateful aspire to lead a country? It makes no sense. What saddens me most about these entries is how little hope there is for a truly unified America. The world is leaving this great nation behind. We are struggling economically and we are divided into red and blue states, liberal and conservative people and haves and have nots. There is no time for all of the anager and bitterness that exisits among people who need each other realistically.
I truly hope that Senator Obama wins the election. I feel strongly that he is a man of true character and I think that he will be good for the country.
Please use Sunday to pray for God's mercy and direction.
A sad American

Please do your job Washington Post! How can you allow such comments? There is nothing in this anonymous, cowardly, hateful comment that advances the discussion.

Everything Obama has done in his life has been done in the name of political expediency. He turned on his friend Alice Palmer,he threw his white grandmother under the bus in his "race speech", he disowned Pastor Wright, now he disowns his church of 20+ years, all for political gain. Will he disown Jesus next for his 30 pieces of silver[ie the Presidential nomination].
This NOT the kind of person I want as my President. Someone who can so easily disown anyone or anthing that is not a political gain for him. Will he disown the American people for the next gain that is good for Obama?

Three years ago I moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Rural Southern Michigan to care for my parents. Mom died in February at age 87. Dad is 91. We worship at the church my Dad's family helped charter nearly 180 years ago. As a christian and an Obama supporter I worship freely in this church with constituants who likely would disagree with me politically as well as spitiually. But we have thrived for so long because of a higher common purpose and respect one another as we would like to be respected.

Barack was a different kind of democrat, he is the religious kind, man of faith
the problem is that he is running away from his faith and church because it was the voodoo faith
Barack spent many years in community service in the south chicago area - so if he was a leader, you would think that Chicago south side is a better place than say 20 years back,
NO Chicago south is the most dangerouf place in the country

Critics: Obama endorsements counter calls for clean government
By David Jackson and John McCormick
June 12, 2007
there was little controversy earlier this year when Sen. Barack Obama endorsed Mayor Richard Daley over two black opponents for a sixth term, lending his star power to an inevitable rout.
But Obama's record of local endorsements -- one measure of how he has used his nascent political clout -- has drawn criticism from those who say it reflects his deference to Chicago's established political order and runs counter to his public calls for clean government.
In the 2006 Democratic primary, for example, Obama endorsed first-time candidate Alexi Giannoulias for state treasurer despite reports about loans Giannoulias' family-owned Broadway Bank made to crime figures. Records show Giannoulias and his family had given more than $10,000 to Obama's campaign, which banked at Broadway.
Obama endorsed former Ald. Dorothy Tillman (3rd), calling her "a very early supporter of my campaign." Tillman was then under fire for her stewardship of the scandal-plagued Harold Washington Cultural Center, where contracts benefited members of her family.
Obama rejected the notion that such endorsements conflict with his promotion of ethics reform in government.

The same fools posting over and over again. Calling a black man running for president a racist. You either have no idea what you're talking about or you're being completely disingenuous. I can't think of what's worse.
