Clinton to Suspend Campaign

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) shared a laugh with Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) at a Washington meeting in 2006, before either of them launched a presidential bid. (Associated Press)

By Anne E. Kornblut
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will suspend her campaign late this week, senior campaign officials confirmed tonight.

Clinton will host an event in Washington on Saturday "to thank her supporters and express her support for Senator Obama and party unity," according to Howard Wolfson, who did not explicitly state that Clinton is dropping out of the race. But other campaign officials said the event will coincide with her departure, despite her earlier reservations about stepping aside.

The campaign first planned the event for Friday, but moved it to Saturday as news of Clinton's plan spread. "This event will be held on Saturday to accommodate more of Senator Clinton's supporters who want to attend," the campaign said in a statement.

Clinton has not made the announcement to her entire staff yet; earlier today, she made a surprise visit to the campaign headquarters in Ballston to thank her aides.

Last night while I was reading this I just happened to be listening to Jerry Garcia singing "Get Out of My Life", an Allen Toussaint song. For those who don't understand how appropriate this is, let me lay the lyrics on you:

Get out of my life, woman,
I don't love you any more.
Get out of my life, woman,
I don't love you any more.
Get out of my life, woman,
You're nothing but heartaches by the score.

Get out of my life, teardrops,
I need to see my way around.
Get out of my life, teardrops,
I need to see my way around.
Get out of my life, teardrops,
You're nothing but heartaches by the pound.

Short but to the point. :-)

I hate Obama writes:

"I hate Obama."

Know ye that nothing lasting or good in the universe has been achieved by hate; it acts primarily against the being who harbors it and corrodes the soul.

New York Post

Hillary Rodham Clinton is ending her quest for the presidency precisely as she began it: with a false sense of entitlement, complete self-absorption and delusional lies.

Now everyone agrees that she has lost the nomination. Barack Obama will be the nominee.

Yet she refuses to acknowledge this simple, clear truth so that the vital process of converting her supporters into supporters of the actual nominee can begin.

In her fantasy world where she is still in control, everything is upside down.

It's as if Obama should be waiting by the phone in hopes she might offer him a spot on the ticket.

When Obama called Clinton Tuesday night to (magnanimously) congratulate her on winning the South Dakota primary, her campaign twice let the calls go to voice mail.

It is true that Clinton eventually commanded a considerable force in this primary.

But she still lost. And she lost profoundly, by every metric imaginable.

This is one of those defining moments.

For Barack Obama, for the Democratic Party and, possibly, for the country.

Obama has run a campaign against the moral shortcuts and twisted truths that have been so viciously perfected by the Clintons and left American politics in ruin.

Obama should make it clear now that he has no intention whatsoever of picking Clinton as his running mate.

Picking her, especially in light of her current antics, would make a lie of Obama's campaign. And failing to rule her out now keeps the lights going on her corrosive carnival stage.

In 1992, Bill Clinton's campaign had a sign on the wall reminding them that the campaign was all about the economy.

The Obama campaign should put up a sign of their own: "It's the Clintons, stupid!"

That's right, Lillith. I am suspending my campaign, not ending it. I am suspending it just long enough to get a hold of this "whitey" tape. Then after that, I won't need to do anything else, because all the superdelegates will return to me. I deserve this nomination, I won the popular vote, and I will not be defeated by sexism.

Posted by: Hillary Rodham Clinton | June 5, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

I will not rush to judgment in hopes that Hillary Clinton is conceding the presidential nomination. After all, she has emphasized that she is "SUSPENDING" her campaign for Obama's spot - NOT "ENDING" her bid for the presidency. Since the lightening bolt did not strike him on the anniversary of Robert Kennedy's Assassination, then she's waiting for something else to transpire that will be equally fatal. With someone like Bill and Hillary Clinton behind the scene, Barack better stay on his toes and those around him had better remain vigilant.

It's awfully strange that Hillary's staunch supporters and "superdelegates" (not so super in my opinion)Donna Brazile and her colleague Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (who should be ashamed of themselves for their displaced loyalties)are still hanging around Hillary and say they will not come over to Obama's camp without permission from Hillary, which she won't give. However, if Hillary had won, the DNC (Ms. Pelosi and the rest) would have rushed to her side and demanded that Barack behave appropriately. There is clearly a double standard going on here and I am certain it's not because he's a MALE. No one in the Democratic Party has the guts to say it, but we all know it's because he is only one half Caucasian, which they and the media refuse to recognize.

Pelosi knows how long she's wanted the Speaker's job and how hard she lobbied for it, even though there were others qualified to fill the position and she got it - even though she hasn't even filled the shoes of her predecessor, and appears too weak to do what needs to be done. Just like Hillary's refusal to step up and stop acting like a sore loser. If we as women are going to be seen as capable, tough and intelligently as men, we can't decide to act like babies when we lose a fair fight and don't get our way. This is no time to whine and whimper. This is the time to be show our moxy and get over our tender feelings. I hope there are other women out their who feel as I do, because somebody has to tell these wimpy women that they are an embarrassment to the rest of us!

These wimpy women are setting the women's lib movement back a hundred years, by making men feel that we can't fight fairly. Fight fair in my opinion doesn't include a bucket of tears when I don't win something. Losing should give women and anyone in a contest, the ba--s to get back up, brush yourself of and keep moving forward - not backward. Hillary, Pelosi, Tubbs-Jones and Brazile be adults and move the hell on. Give the man his due. You fought, you lost and he won.

One key point to Hillary. Those 18 million votes you claim were ill gotten by your belief that when all else fails, and the Black man or woman is winning, pulling the old "race" card from the deck always works with those who inherently has minorities in this country. Hitler knew how to use this as well at the misfortune of so many innocent Jews, many of whom were saved in WWI because American Black soldiers and Tuskegee fighter pilots went over and shot down German planes and killed German soldiers to prevent more Jews from going into the gas tanks. Think about that and do not try to turn the clock back on Black and White relations. Black soldiers gave their lives also to preserve the freedoms you and other White Americans enjoy today.

I understand the frustration of Senator Clinton's supporters. Regardless, to them, I say:

John Paul Stevens (age 88)
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (age 75)
Antonin Scalia (age 72)
Anthony Kennedy (age 71)
Stephen Breyer (age 69)
David Souter (age 68)
Clarence Thomas (age 59)
Samuel Alito (age 58)
John Roberts (age 53)

And I have a question for them:

Who do you want appointing Justice Stevens' replacement on the US Supreme Court...Senator Obama or Senator McCain?

Be angry for a day, a week, a month or for many months...but come November, do not put our rights at risk for a generation to come.

I will be interested to hear how you plan to win Ohio, Ark, Florida and Pa without the HC voters which your supporters come here and slime every day and state you no longer need in the party. Perhaps you think that carrying 51% of the D vote is all you need to win those states b/c of the very reliable GenY voters who you are so sure will turn out. Sounds exactly like the McGovern strategy. How did that campaign work out for you guys?

Obama is already beating McCain in the polls in PA and OH. This proves that the idea that any of these States can't be won without Clinton--or her few supporters brainwashed enough to believe her lies--has no basis in reality.

Curious Why you would think that? Are you Entiled to our votes.

As Dan accurately posted O supporters bully people and act like they don't need the 18 million HC voters. Do you think that we are like the DNC and Michigan voters who will just reward your campaign for absolutely no reason whatsoever? You insult and abuse HC and her supporters and then ask, Why won't they support us?

Bob Doghtery was right on the mark about HC supporters and Sindc saying "So long to This D party" speaks volumes of how most HC supporters feel.

Good Luck with your O attitude in the fall.

From today, I am officially a MCCAIN DEMOCRAT.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 5, 2008 5:39 AM | Report abuse

Let's see now. Supposedly Obama won this all on his own. But if he loses then it is already Hillary's fault.

Posted by: McCain will win | June 5, 2008 4:56 AM | Report abuse

First Howard Dean, Carl Levin, John Edwards, Obama, DNC Insiders and Super Delegates abandon us, the American people. Now if Hillary does so also by sanctioning the Crimes Against Democracy by Carl Levin, Howard Dean, John Edwards, Obama and the DNC Insiders by allocating delegates to Obama from Michigan when HE took his name off the ballot. Time for American Democrats to follow Ronald Regan's lead (Ron was a blind Democrat before seeing the light and becoming a democrat) and change parties. Many of thought that the Democratic Party could be saved by Hillary, but now even she has abaonded us, the American People.

American Democratcs, American Republicans, American Independents for McCain. McCain should now choose Ross Perot as his running mate. If he does he will beat Obama (with Hillary or not) by over 20 percentage points. The Democatic Party is dust in the wind. Democrats for McCain.
If you want to sanction Crimes against Democracy, similar to the Crimes against Tibetans (cultural genocide in Tibet) and Crimes against Mums in Texas (DNC Insiders social workers who took children from Mums and Dads, and required Republican and American Civil Liberty Judges to order the children to be returned to their Mums) then stay in the DNC Insiders controlled Democratic Party.

But if you are sick of corruption from within the Democratic Party by Howard Dean, Carl Levin, John Edwards, Obama and now EVEN Hillary, by her supporting these thugs and criminals, then cross over and vote THEM ALL OUT OF OFFICE this coming November. Democrats for America, and an American War hero, McCain. What better man is there to lead us out of Iraq and Afghanistan than a man who HAS experience with our exit from Vietnam. And Vietnam is now one of our good trading partners. So McCain and the Republicans know what they are doing. Knowing many Iraqis and Afghanis their countries are much better now then they were with Sadam and the Northern Alliance running the ship. We had our War of Independence and got support from our French and Native American Indian allies. Obama and the Democrats would abandon both the Iraqi People and the Afghani People. We as Amerians need to Fight to the end, like with did in WWII against the Germans and Japanese. And then rather than taking revenge, as the world leaders did after WWI, which lead to WWII, we helped Germany and Japan rebuild. Both are now two of our closest friends and allies. We need to do the same now with both Iraq and Afghanistan. The Republicans are the best equipped to do so. McCain is a natural born leader. Many of thought Hillary was the same. But now that the going has got tough, she has abandoned us the American people and the approximately 18,000,000 million people who have supported her. But fortnately she did it now, and not after we suppported her in her run for the USA Presidency. That would have been a disaster. So in many ways thanks Hillary for showing us your TRUE Colors. You had hoodwinked a lot of us, but now we see you are more loyal to the Democratic party.

Hillary now claims that she will half heartedly concede to Obama on Saturday, but not on Friday. She wants to hold onto her candidacy for one more day than others in the party wanted her to. That's only because she considers herself to be somebody special who deserves to hold onto it for one more day.

Hillary also wants to hold onto her delegates. Now, that is really funny. What can she do with those delegates. Make them all pass gas on Obama's face? I don't understand why she wants to hold onto them. Is that like a bargaining chip? She thinks it is some kind of cattle trade that is going to happen at the convention.

NOBODY "screwed over" Hillary... she did it all by her Bosnia, Bogus gas tax, Iran obliterating, white, white Americans, self !!!

She was the front runner and had all the advantages... money, the Clinton name, and decades of experience at campaigning.

She underestimated her competitiion, spent all her money too soon, picked the wrong campaign manager, didn't find the right message until too late, and polarized the party by stirring up MI & FL into thinking they were being disenfranchised..... two states she didn't give a hoot about until she was behind in delegates.

She then resorted to race-bating and character-bashing and kitchen sink-throwing and many other divisive tactics... never thinking enough ahead to think that it might all come back to haunt her... which it is.

She played at the old way of politics, which is all she knows. But this is a new generation of voters, and even many, many of us baby-boomers and Republicans and Independents can see through the spin and see the truth.... and we are convincing our parents and friends... and the Obama movement just keeps growing and it is UNSTOPPABLE !!!

President Barack Obama !!

I am totally amazed at the media and all involved stating Obama is inexperienced and needs Senator Clinton. Americans voted in a president whom never fought in a war, started a war and it took two years for him to be educated enough to speak properly to the American public on Tv without a script. Give Obama a chance. He is young, smart, and has plenty of support to manage America. Yes, it will take some time for him to know everything about world issues. He will however learn Quickly without the help of the Clintons. He is still just a man, but be dam proud of him. Surly the media can stop the spinning and give him a chance now that Hilary is gone. Surly he deserves that. She is gone, you have been spared. The image tonight of Robert Kennedy was a sick choice to use at this time. When will you people ask for real news before some nut case from your country does something terrible.
Bless you all.

Lost Tribe Of Hillary Holdouts Found

- BREAKING NEWS -

The first contact in several years with remnants of a holdout band of Hillary Clinton supporters took place yesterday, with a helicopter flyover identifying the handful of survivors. Unwilling to concede that the 2008 Democratic presidential primary had been fairly conducted, the hardy but dwindling tribe became increasingly isolated during the Obama/Leahy administrations, eschewing television and rumored to be surviving only on moss, pant suit juice and the occasional squirrel.

Following the merger of the Republican and Democratic Parties and repeal of the 22nd Amendment in 2015 which allowed Beloved Leader Obama's election to a third term by an unprecedented Electoral College vote of 538 - 0, the tribe disappeared and has not been heard from for several years. Until this sighting, the continued existence of the "Hillarians" was doubted and their story had passed into the realm of urban legend.

It appears that Hillary ended up attending a conference call called on by some senior heavy weights in the democratic party. She was basically asked by the senior well wishers of the party to step aside and give Obama the breathing room to posture his general election campaign. Finally Hillary was given the wacking in private to make her concede to Obama or the democratic party will face the dire consequence in November. They had asked her to concede by Friday.

After that conference call the news spread like wildfire that Hillary will concede on Friday. But given her stubbornness and high ego, she wanted to postpone it for yet another day. Now the song will be sung on Saturday instead of Friday.

It had been a long campaign. The experienced, inevitable, in it to win, ready on day one, ready to pick up the phone at 3am, the savior of the hard working uneducated white people, and the aristocratic queen Hillary is finally sending her pantsuits to the cleaners.

Being a woman, I would've loved to see a woman become president. But from day one, this lady seemed too polarizing to carry the womanhood banner to the white house. In a few years the Clinton's will be part of history, a smudge in our country's political history.

This is to all of you Obamaites who thinks you've won the victory of the century, a definitive trouncing, a majestic lopsided, butt kicking, smashing defeat of the vaunted Hillary.

While you've had those 10,000 upwards to 75,000 people rallies and you've been screaming high and holy accolades of your candidate in fact Hillary has garnered just about a solid 50% of the vote. Now, she did this without 75,000 supporters in a stadium.

What part of this don't you get? She has virtually as many votes as your guy and without the movie star coefficient.

And...she has won the BIG CITIES, and has won THE MOST POPULOUS STATES that are all NECESSARY FOR A VICTORY IN NOVEMBER.

And you and the electronic and print press are first class IDIOTS not to recognize the NECESSITY of this POLITICAL FUNDAMENTAL.

I did a little research this afternoon. Research about caucuses and changing party affiliation from Republican to Democrat just before the vote. Hence, allowing a REPUBLICAN TO VOTE IN THE DEMOCRATIC caucus election. Can't do this in a primary but you can do this in a caucus.

AND IT HAPPENED A LOT.

Look it up for yourself.

And then ask yourself why this wasn't fully covered by the major electronic news outlets and investigated by, let's say, this paper.

And now Obama gets to kick off his campaign with Rezco's conviction. Which, by the way is a tip of an iceberg. Or the top of a volcano. Depending upon your point of view so to speak.

Obama did not in the wildest of imaginations (except YOUR imaginations) win a VICTORY.

WHAT HE WON IS SOMETHING ELSE that has yet to be considered, understood and investigated.

I fail to understand why you are so damn happy considering what he is up against as submitted by the Republicans.

And this is why I consider you political idiots.
And for the record I do intend to (unless there is a really nutsy type connection or fault) vote Democrat in November.

And for the record I'd have to hold my nose for either candidate when I vote.

Given the reality of today you Obamites HAVE VERY LITTLE TO CHEER ABOUT. That is, if you are caring and loyal Democrats you don't.

Lieberman is not gonna be there whispering in McCain's ear, when he confuses, again, Shiites with Sunis and Saddam with Ahmadinejad...

Obama's gonna smile and that's going to get McCain really, really angry and he's gonna scream, "Don't tell me who's whom! I am old enough to be your grandfather, I know them all!, even if I don't remember all names and groups and events since the early 1900's"!

That stumped Obama, like Lloyd Bentson said to Dan Quayle, "Mr. Quayle, I know Jack Kennedy; Jack's a friend of mine and you ain't no Jack Kennedy!" --- which left Dan Quayle blinking a few times, taking a few deep breath, not sure what how to respond!

We must have a united Democratic Party to put an end finally to the crimes of the Bush family and the neocons. While I admire McCain's loyal service to America, his policies in the past few years have clearly changed to be close to those of Bush. He has flipflopped on the tax cut for the wealthy, which if made permanent will continue our nation's slide into debtor nation status. He would no longer even support the immigration bill that bears his name. McCain now wants Roe v. Wade overturned when once he did not. He panders to far right preachers when once he denounced some.

I support Obama because he wants to strengthen Social Security and Medicare. He wants insurance to cover the underinsured and uninsured, especially children. He wants to end he war in Iraq. He wants to end the welfare for the millionaires. He wants America to stand for democracy and greatness, as it did before Bush.

I wish all the pre-menstrual harpies on this thread wuld STFU and acknowledge reality.

The contest was about delegates, okay ? Got that through your thick heads ? DELEGATES !

Obama won the most pledged delegates, using the rules as declared AND AGREED TO by all contestants last year. The supers then confirmed the will of the people by adding their support to make sure that he made it over the line.

Obama won the most pledged delegates, he won the most super delegates, he won the most delegates.

He won, end of story.

Forget Michigan, forget Florida, forget the "popular vote", forget the "swing sates" forget all the hype, lies, machinations and spin that Wolfson, Ickys and Clinton managed to get you to believe.

Say it with me now - Obama won the most delegats and is therefor the Democratic nminee for President.

And somebody get these bleeding hearts a hanky . . .

Yes, there are racists but those are out-lyers. There are sexists, racists, people who are cruel to animals, and people with bad breath as well. They are on both sides of this. Nothing will convince them of anything, and they are not part of any reasonable debate. But when you shout "racist" at anyone who disagrees with you whether it is true or not, whether you have any basis for the statement or not, you cheapen your argument and you cheapen your candidate. You expose the intellectual poverty of his positions by showing that he can only be defended by insulting those who disagree.

If you believe in what Hillary stands for, you have to recognize that she and Senator Obama have been incredibly close on most every important issue (stress the word "Important", because most of the vitriol has been over issues that will wind up being inconsequential in the governance of a nation).

Barack Obama cannot win in the General Election. Hillary and her surrogates and supporters couldn't tell the truth about Obama or they would be called racist or hurting the Democratic party.

The GOP won't have such restraints.

It will be clear by the election in November that Barack Obama's father was an Arab terrorist (The Kenyatta's), Obama, himself is half Arab, according to the Kenyan Government records (that is probably why Obama won't let his birth certificate be seen) -

The GOP will take note and make campaign advertisements about Obama and all of his negative terrorist, and anti-American and corrupt political Chicago Way associations.

Obama isn't home free by any means. He has sharp elbowed his way this far but that will be as far as he gets. Good thing Hillary is "suspending" her campaign and not quitting it. We will need her when the Obama s*** hits the fan in the General Election. gw.

Posted by: Nadeem Zakaria | June 4, 2008 10:17 PM | Report abuse

To Dave:

I am going to vote against Barrack Obama
because Barrack Obama is a bigot of the worst kind. He is a hypocrit living in a $2 million dollar home in Chicago claiming to be for the little guy.
Further, had any white preacher said what the Reverand Jeremiah Wright said, there would have been Hades to pay!
Had the pastor of Hillary Clinton's church or John McCain's church mocked black people and cursed them and made fun of Barrack Obama the way his ministers did, there would have been an uproar unlike anything that everyone would have ever seen. Chances are even, there might have been rioting.
Witness what happened to Don Imus. He makes a very thoughless and tasteless remark and is immeadiatetly thrown off the air. Chief amonst his critics is Al Sharpton, who is now under Federal Tax indictment for owning the government over $1 million dollars in back taxes. Further, this is not the first time that he has had tax problems.
Barrack Obama will have a hollow victory.
He will have been elected the Captain of the Titanic. He, and Teddy Kennedy, and Caroline Kennedy, will all ride the Titanic to defeat in November!
The Captain of the Titanic will lead the Democratic ship of state down to a horrific defeat in Novemeber.
If John Kerry couldn't do it because he couldn't capture certain major states, what does Barrack Obama think he's going to do?
The last time I checked, you need California, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and so on to win the Presidency!
Barrack Obama is a loser and an arrogant spoiler.
Hillary ought to turn him down for VP and run as a third party candidate.
That would teach everyone who's really in charge!
You may vilify the Clinton's, but we had the greatest prosperity ever, including a budget surplus under them.
Barrack Obama will wind up as box office poison once he loses in November.
I really wouldn't bet money that he will win in the fall.
People are sick of the Republicans, yes, but they are not so fool hardy as to vote for a racial bigot like Barrack Obama.
I resent the anti-white rhetoric of his church and I know that deep down inside these bigots were his pals.

That is not to say she should automatically be on the ticket, but she SHOULD work as a loyal Democrat to help deliver those people who were voting for, when all the dust settles, a Democrat.
