Barack Obama
Rice 'Gratified' by Obama Win
By Mary Beth Sheridan
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pronounced herself "gratified" and unsurprised by Sen. Barack Obama's win in the Democratic presidential primary during an interview at the Susan G. Komen National Race for the Cure in Washington, D.C., today.
"As an American, it's a great thing. As a black American, it's a great thing. Our country's extraordinary. We've overcome a lot," she said. "And I'm very gratified, but not surprised."
Rice attributed her lack of surprise to her belief that "America's a country that slowly but surely has been overcoming what I call its birth defect" -- racial inequality -- and to her conviction, after traveling "all over the world," that "this country ... does better in bringing together in the same body people of difference than any place in the world."
"I believe that Americans will now make their choices based on policy, and that's the best thing about this. Because it just shows who we are as a country," Rice continued. "And I think black Americans are achieving, and they're doing well, and we look at the number of people who are CEOs and in high positions, black Americans are achieving -- and achievers. What we have to make sure is everybody has an opportunity for a quality education, and that to me is probably now our biggest single challenge."
Rice again dismissed suggestions that she might be a potential running mate for presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain.
"I really look forward to watching this as a voter," she said.
"I am not going to run for elected office, it's not what I do, who I am. I am going to go back West of the Mississippi, where I belong... I really think of myself as a West Coast person."

You would think that in 21st century, America would have gotten over her racial devides. Barack Obama is the Dem nominee. Just get over the fact that some of you so called ''christians'' cannot let go of the past. It's a new world. The choice is simple: If you want four more years of Bush policies, vote for McCain. If you want this country to move forward here at home and on the world stage, then vote for Obama.

globalcitizenlinda (6-9-08 9:12 A.M.) said it perfectly.
As a 65 year old, white female, I enthusiastically support Barack Obama and am quite tired of being told by the media that I am part of Clinton's camp. Barack Obama has many admirable qualities, including his integrity, his quiet composure, his magnanimity and his humor, which will make him a stellar president.

People who think Obama is not going to win this election in a landslide are doing the same thing that the Clintons did which is to under-estimate the talents of Obama and the tenacity of all the supporters who make up Team Obama.
Obama will win WITHOUT a Clinton on the ticket. He will also bring with him a whole number of new voters and hence new Dem political gains at the state and federal level.
We who are members of Team Obama understand the challenge - it was NEVER going to be easy to elect a black "skinny dude" whose names are Barack Hussein Obama. But because we believe in the integrity and quiet strength of Barack, we are determined to see President Obama sworn in for two terms and we are up to the challenge

I for one am sick and tired of Clinton Supporters talking about Clinton in 2012 and saying they will campaign against Obama so she can run again. You ALL have one part of you equation missing and that is the fact that Obama supporters represent the other half of the democratic party. So do your campaigning against him all you want and cause him to loose and our country to loose but remember this, Obama supporters won't forget or forgive what you all are doing and will make it our mission to ensure that we prevent clinton in 2012 just like you are trying to prevent Obama in 2008

Barack Obama "hustled" his nomination. How? Has a democratic nominee, you do not have to report any donors (campaign contributors) under the amount of $200.00 to the D.N.C. Thus, he kept a list of names of all -$200.00 donors and literally bribed the superdelegates. Think about it, when the other dems run for re-election they now have a list of loyal donors to get money from. CLINTON in 2012! McCain = McSAVE! Obama did'nt even leave the church until the 2nd Anti-American pastor came out! WTF?!?! By the way... there are 52 Sundays in a year! He was a loyal member & friend of Jeremiah Wright, that's "at least" over 1,040 Sermons and some Wednesday night sermons! Only Obama could lose the White House for the Dems, only him...

I never thought I would see it in my life time...never. A black American receiving the second highest honor in a democratic, free nation - Presidential nominee of a major party. Shirley Chisholm tried. Jesse Jackson tried. Al Sharpton even tried. Barak Obama excelled thus succeeding what others could not in time past.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It really boils down to what can they do? Al Sharpton is an idiot. Tawana Brawley??? Jesse Jackson is a good guy but not presidential material. Chisholm was a great Senator, but that was her limit.
Clinton lost and McCain will lose because Obama is a better candidate, has better answers for the problems we face, appeals to more people across the spectrum and has the charisma of a Kennedy.
I am voting for him for all the reasons stated and more. Color to me is meaningless. Don't give me a politician. Give me a leader whom I can follow.
Rice is a good example of the Peter principle in action. She rose to a level that displays her ineffectivness and now we are stuck with her. After her emabarassing lack of independant leadership in advising Bush she should have resigned when Tenet did and headed west then.
I would have even have given her a Freedom Medal as encouragement to take a bow and get off the stage. She is another reason to question whether W might have actually been given the "abbbie normal" brain and doesn't realize it.
Groundbreaking History
I never thought I would see it in my life time...never. A black American receiving the second highest honor in a democratic, free nation - Presidential nominee of a major party. Shirley Chisholm tried. Jesse Jackson tried. Al Sharpton even tried. Barak Obama excelled thus succeeding what others could not in time past.
I am a black conservative American woman always am voting straight ticket at any election - Republican. During this current process, it made me sit up and take a look at the Democratic Party, front runner candidate - Obama. The man had my attention all during the primaries. He is quick witted, articulate, great listener, diplomatic, well-read, all the things that should embody a president of a free nation. Don't get me wrong, I believe there are many blacks out in American who well educated and carry themselves in a way unlike Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Obama is that man.
To this day, I find it very hard to wrap my head around this groundbreaking news. For so long, in a non-verbal action, black Americans have been told that they could not garner the highest office in the land. For more than 200 years it has been a white man in the White House - no pun intended. Even after gaining civil rights during the 60's, it has been a white man in the White House. Can it be...can it be that America will have its first true black president in the White House.
After June 3, 2008, I held my head even higher than normal - if there is such a thing--because of the changing tide.
Let's gain some perspective on the matter. I am not a black American who goes out to promote "black power" that and "black power" this. I don't run around with the likes of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Jeremiah Wright, Fredrick Haynes, III nor am I a card carrying NAACP member, as I do not foster their ideologies. Could it be...there is a sense of pride in what has happened in the past few days?
Folks,
People are naturally passionate about the issues that endear them. Our cultural heritage both revels and embraces the notion of the United States as a haven for disadvantaged or prejudiced peoples.
That being said, it is an historical notion, and not a current factual representation of immigration laws of this country.
Undoubtedly citizens of the other countries are discriminated, tortured,and killed in un-Godly fashion. It is truly shameful that our civilization rarely, directly confronts needless tragedies in the world, be it the current state of women in the middle east, or Jewish genocide in the 1940's, or other ethnic cleansing in Africa going on today.
No earthly person is going to correct all the injustices seen on this earth. I'll leave that discussion to the politicians and religious leaders.
I neither give credit nor discredit to Condi Rice for her involvement in world politics. Rather, it is her personal accomplishment to have risen from humble origins to an effective national leadership position I give credit to. She may be wrong on point, right on point, or indecisive in nature. She's in the thick of world politics, a truly complex myriad of differing philosophies, and deserves an opportunity to be there.
Dr. Rice is proving that the American dream can work if one is driven enough.
I guess we have gotten off topic, haven't we?
Let's see, where were we???
Have a nice day,
Doc
Read and weep for the Israeli Jews of Gush Katif/Gaza, on whose behalf I wrote this article in July 2005 before their illegal expulsion by the bribed Ariel Sharon and criminal company working for foreign interests. Many of them remain homeless, depressed and basically abandoned by their lying government -- their former homes history, stripped bare and destroyed by marauding Arab enemies who are now fighting among themselves, one terrorist group (Hamas) against another terrorist group (Fatah). Condi Rice worked for ethnic cleansing, aided and abetted terrorism, pressured Israel to enforce Judenrein policies to appease Nazi-Muslims. Condi should be "tarred and feathered" and run out of town, so to speak.
But Israel must be safe, and, if necessary blow Iran to bits, to make it so.
As a Phd, you well know how long Israel stood by racist South Africa till the end of the appartheid regime. In fact, Israel was the last one on the planet to keep diplomatic ties with them. And do a lot of business with the white racists: weapons, technology, intel,etc...
Condoleeza Rice has been a complete failure in the Bush administration.
It makes no difference to me if Hillary is on the ticket as VP. I will NEVER vote for Obama because he's unqualfied to be President of the U.S. To vote for Obama is to condone the rampant sexism, racism, classism, disrespect, and voter disenfranchisement he has continually interjected into this campaign along with his campaign, his nasty suppporters and ALL media. Obama is too risky for the Dems to nominate and certainly too risky to be President. Country first, party second. I trust McCain more than Obama.
The Democratic party MUST be held accountable for their failure to denounce it. In fact, the DNC has been complicit in disenfranchising voters in Michigan and Florida. It calls to the mind the ole Jim Crow laws when blacks were considered 3/5 a person. 1/2 votes? 1/2 a person? THIS is far worse. Is THIS the same party I stood with in 2000 and 2004 demanding that EVERY VOTE BE COUNTED? I still have the sticker on my fridge.
To vote for Obama is to abandon all the principles the Democratic party is supposed to stand for. I can NEVER do that. A strong message of NO and a strong defeat of Obama is the ONLY message they will hear. The Democratic party understands two things, money and votes. We have the power to withhold both. Do so.
*You must do the thing which you think you cannot do* Eleanor Roosevelt
*You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it* Maya Angelou
Rise, Women, Rise
Rise, Men, Rise
We MUST say loudly and clearly that we will NOT accept what has been done to Hillary Clinton in 2008. Paybacks are hell, but necessary. If we don't speak out now, WHEN????
I think Obama's nomination signifies more than just a shift in racial thinking in America, but also a shift in race. As we increasingly become a nation of minorities, it is no wonder a minority should become a presidential nominee.
For example, I remember on my last road trip (before gas hit 4 bucks a gallon), pulling into a small town in Oklahoma of all places, and finding a Bollywood station on the radio, which catered to the large Indian population.
Though it is well known there are tensions between certain Asian, Hispanic, and black communities, especially in innercities, it still makes logical sense that minorities from any group would have an easier time identifying with a minority as a president than yet another white man. This, I think, is evidenced by the historically high voter turn out in such aforementioned groups.
Moreover, and please excuse the long post, that many whites who voted for Clinton say they will now vote for McCain, BECAUSE HE IS WHITE, is further evidence that Obama's nomination is not a shift so much in thinking as it is in demographics.
Condi Rice's acheivements are noteworthy in history, and I sincerely believe that's all she is concerned about. History is replete with the notion that politicians are elected and may become figureheads, while the bulk of the accomplishments of a politician are obtained by the work of appointed officials (shades of Henry Kissinger). Dr. Rice can get much more accomplished by staying out of the electoral process and continuing to be of service to her country. Her resume will continue to grow and she will continue to be a heroine to younger black American women and women in general.
I'm 53, and grew up watching the civil rights movement as a child. I remember well the television coverage of the 60's... live, unscripted, un-spun. (Can you imagine watching Lee Harvy Oswald shot live on national TV today? Didn't think so.)
I remember going to college in '73 and seeing my first interracial couple. My, how bold they were! Now, 35 years later, it seems so normal and irrelevant.
History is a good teacher, if one listens to one's teacher.
I'd like to think that in this current day and age that the nomination of Sen. Obama is yes, historical, but more importantly, it is a truly a beacon to the rest of the world that the collective intelligence of the United States has risen above the ignorance and stupidity that has typlified it for so long.
My wife (who is black American by the way), now has this "take" on the seedier side of Americana: "You can't fix stupid". Funny, but she owes that to Larry the Cable Guy. My, how we've come full circle.
Have a great day folks!
I don't like seeing C. Rice and Obama lumped together in the same discussion. They are OPPOSITES: The former (Rice) has dedicated her life for evil, and the latter (Obama) for good.
Whites fall into a continuum ranging from evil to good. As this example ilustrates so clearly -- the same is true for backs.
There will be no reparations. Not under an Obama administration and not under any other administration, ever. Nor should there be. The events took place a very long time ago. The people who were *directly* affected are all gone now. There is no one alive now who was alive when slavery was last legal. What's more there are very few people who are alive whose parents or grandparents were slaves. Which means that at *best* we are the great or great-great grandchildren of slaves. The direct harm is far removed.
What's more, the day after reparations are paid you can write off any hope for actual progress to be made in becoming one society without the racial antagonism. I guarantee you that if reparations were paid, white folks would look at us black folks and say "What do you mean blacks are being discriminated against in sentencing? What more do you people want? Weren't you just paid $N yesterday? "
None of the above is to say that it's at all fair, merely that there's realpolitik and that view leads to the inevitable conclusion that reparations, whatever temporary financial benefits would be, would be *far* more costly to the status of blacks in America.
Lastly, it's an idea with no future. The sooner we blacks realize that, outside of a fun intellectual toy for when the tequila has you feeling philosophical, reparations is an idea that had a time and that was the 19th century.
Cheers
A
Experience on every level, and Gentelmen.
I hope that Doctor Rice will someday run for office herself. She will be reminded of several things which occurred on her watch - such as the 9/11 attacks. Her memory will be refreshed as follows:
"The two-page Presidential Daily Briefing of August 6, 2001 was made public as requested by all members of the panel. Former Watergate Prosecutor and high-powered Democratic lawyer Richard Ben-Veniste took Rice to task during her sworn testimony, demanding that she say the title of the PDB, which was "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US."
Obama will be more conservative than a lot more people expect he will be. He will not turn up to the inaguration wearing a dashiki with is fist raised in the air. He will be in a Brooks Brothers Suit.
I completely concur. Obama will quickly reveal what many of us have sensed from the start - he is more centrist than liberal and more sensible than all the fringe lunatics on both sides of the aisle.
Reparations?
Are you serious? No, we don't get reparations. I don't want them. Trust, Obama will be more conservative than a lot more people expect he will be. He will not turn up to the inaguration wearing a dashiki with is fist raised in the air. He will be in a Brooks Brothers Suit.
All this praise for Rice. How soon we forget that she was in the room when they authorized torture of prisoners of war. She is one of the architects of this illegal and unjust war. At least Colin Powell had enough sense to get away from these people.
During the primaries when people said that I voted for Obama because he is black (I am an AA woman), I always justified myself by saying even though Rice was a black woman, I would NEVER vote for her.
Yes, she is going west of the Mississippi, but she should be headed toward the Hague charged with war crimes.
CR should put in her papers if she feels proud about BO.
You can't run with the hare and hunt with the hounds.
Hounds always make strange bedfellows for non-canine species. It is a pity to be caught in a bind.
Can you name one Condi Rice accomplishment?
Thought so ;)
I never thought of this before...but what about an Obama/Condi ticket. That would definitely bring in the moderate republicans and independents (they love Condi)...make Hilary's fan club not so pissed off by choosing a woman...Black folk won't be mad about it...in fact, it would be pretty damn funny...It would rebuke McCain's attacks on Obama regarding a lack of experience on foreign policy and soft on defense. Actually, it would probably shut McCain up completely! What could McCain/Rove possibly do with this ticket? But it would only work if Condi did a McClellan on Bush and agreed that the war moved forward with knowing faulty intelligence and she would have to bear her soul to all of the American and Iraqi families who lost love ones in this hideous war. But Obama/Condi would really piss off the democratic base...especially the progressive part of the party. It's pissing me off right now as I write it. Never mind. Really bad idea. But it was fun to follow the train of thought and see where it lead. Right to a dead end! Obama/Gore is still my favorite!!
SAINT- You racist blabber has no place in political discourse. While I disagree with Rice on most positions, this was simply a moment of pride in America, and the opportunity it affords everyone. While you may dislike Obama and you have difficulty expressing this dislike without resorting to name calling, he's obviously accomplished more in his short time than you or I could ever HOPE to.
Dr. Rice, SORRY, but you are Sooooooo Wrong!
It is "Barry" the Corrupt "Empty Suit" who OWES YOU, You, Colin Powell, Clarence Thomas, Charlie Rangel, Alan Keyes, and heck, even Jesse Jokeson, GRATITUDE!
It was the GOOD works of the group of all of you, that enabled someone like HIM, to get where he did!
Face it Dr. Rice, You and Colin could have sent Him running Home!
A Powell/ Dr.Rice Team, is STILL my Hope for the future!
Not a Black(Happa Haole) President.
But, A President, and a Vice President, who just so happen to be Darker than average!
Just like the last two Secretaries of State were!
No-"Black" Secretary of State GARBAGE! ;~)
On one hand, she's an incompetent Bushie who is just as guilty as anybody for this damn war. On the other hand, she's the only one in the administration with a heart and half a brain. She's got to be half-decent if she knows that she probably shouldn't be in Washington any longer.
This from the former National Security Adviser during the 9/11 attacks and the Secretary of State during the Iraq Occupation. Ineptitude knows no color. Bush was very good at making vacant gestures. He appointed inexperienced people to very important positions knowing damn well they would be just figureheads. Now, let's see how many militant blacks from Chicago Obama put in charge. At least the likes of Rev. Wright speaks their mind; unlike Obama who speaks and then must clarify (forked-tongue syndrome). What Obama supporters must realize is that this is the only time that a President (potential) will listen to us. Let's get specific. Cmon, do we or do we not get reparations? Don't do us like FEMA, bro!
I have always been a staunch republican, but if Obama winning will once and for all silence the pathetic excuses minorities constantly use about how they can't get ahead because our "system is biases toward whites", then I'm voting Democrat this year. If a black man can become President of the United States, then there is NO excuse for any Black or Mexican to be collecting government checks and blaming all their problems on me!
