Obama Adviser Faces Scrutiny Over Mortgage Deals
By Shailagh Murray
Here's the trouble with running a squeaky clean campaign: there's very little margin for ethical error.
James A. Johnson, former Fannie Mae CEO and consummate Washington insider, is leading Sen. Barack Obama's vice-presidential search process. He just conducted an early round of interviews on Capitol Hill today. But Johnson also is proving a ripe target for Republicans looking to spot hypocrisy in Obama's pledge to reject business as usual in Washington.
The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that Johnson had received mortgages worth more than $7 million from beleaguered lender Countrywide Financial, including at least two loans below market average. The article noted that the transactions may have been perfectly aboveboard -- but several could prove too cozy, depending on how much they overlapped with Johnson's Fannie Mae tenure.
"There is nothing illegal about a mortgage firm treating some borrowers better than others," the Journal article noted. "But if Fannie Mae officials received special treatment, that could cause a political problem for the government-sponsored, shareholder-owned company."
Countrywide was severely battered by the subprime mortgage crisis and is in the process of being bought out by Bank of America Corp. for a fraction of its former value. The lender also is under federal investigation for possible securities fraud, the Journal noted.
The Republican National Committee responded as if it had won the lottery. "Barack Obama routinely rails against lobbyists and corporate insiders, yet his campaign is stocked with both. Now it turns out that the man leading his vice presidential selection team is receiving highly questionable loans," spokesman Alex Conant declared in a statement. "With millions of Americans struggling to pay their mortgages, it raises serious questions about Obama's judgment when we learn members of his campaign leadership are receiving favors that the average American would never get."
Sen. John McCain piled on during an interview this afternoon with Carl Cameron of Fox News. "I think it suggests a bit of a contradiction, talking about how his campaign is gonna be not associated with people like that. Clearly he is very much associated with that," McCain said, according to statement circulated by his campaign.
Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor shot back, "It's the height of hypocrisy for the McCain campaign to try and make this an issue when John Green, one of John McCain's top advisors, lobbied for Ameriquest, which was one of the nation's largest subprime lenders and a key player in the mortgage crisis. As President, Senator Obama will crack down on fraudulent lenders and bring real relief to Americans struggling in the grip of the housing crisis-the kind of change that works for the American people."
In a town where even the lowliest campaign aides bill themselves as "political advisers" on cable news, Johnson is a master of discretion who rarely gives interviews, much less overstates his usefulness. He also vetted running mates for John Kerry and Walter Mondale.
But as adroitly as Johnson has navigated the political world, he also has risen to the highest levels in the business one. After an early career spent teaching at Princeton University and running the public affairs office of Target Corp., Johnson went to work for Mondale, a fellow Minnesotan, when he was vice president.
In 1985, Johnson rose to the highest ranks of Wall Street when he was named managing director of Lehman Brothers.
In 1991, he moved to Fannie Mae, serving as CEO of the mortgage-guarantee behemoth for most of the Clinton administration. He later became vice-chairman of Perseus LLC, a private banking firm, and joined the boards of Goldman Sachs, Gannett Co. Inc., and United Health Group, among other high-profile companies.
He chaired the Kennedy Center for the Arts and is a member of exclusive clubs such as American Friends of Bilderberg, the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations.

I worry about the future of this country, not because of any presidential elections but because of the stupidity and cupidity I read in the "comments' section of these news articles.

I don't think the issue is how great a loan this guy got.
The issue is that this guy is clearly an insider, a point lost seemingly lost or ignored by so many who claim Obama is for change and is going to change the way DC works.
Now how does this happen if he brings an insider on board to help him pick a VP? It defies logic (of course that's assuming one not only has a brain but dares to use it as well).

Actually, it's because I have researched and looked facts us for myself that I know what you are posting is untrue.
Obama does not support reparations and did not author a call for them. That is an obvious lie.
There is no Michelle Obama video. That is a hoax, with multiple obvious errors in the claimed circumstances of the non-existent video. Obvious lie.
The Keating 5 is an ethics scandal involving McCain, which does have quite a bit to it. Obvious and easily checked truth.
Your lies reflect very poorly on McCain's campaign. If your candidate was that good, you wouldn't have to lie. Of course, given that most people are on Obama's side of the issues, it does make it harder for you.

It's pretty clear from reading these posts that those of you supporting BHO do not read or looks up facts for themselves. If they did, they would understand the troubling judgement that BHO has displayed over his short life. He is the epitome of TAX and SPEND. He will push the National Coalition for Reparations for Black Americans. Look that up. It was authored by Obama, Wright (the one that also got $15M from the federal gov in the last 20 years) Phleger, Carruthers, and others with close ties to THE CHURCH. This will be just one more big $$$ being promised to the blacks for their vote.
What about the Keating 5? I've studied it and...............??? In other words a non-issue.
BHO has shown his beliefs and judgement in his voting record (12 yes no votes for things that will benefit blacks) and about 100 present votes. Didn't vote. Can't understand the bills possibly?
And, if you really want to see how he feels about the black Americans, check out how he got elected into his first two public seats. By robbing his "brother". Just go to the Chicago Tribune and search BHO's name. There are also videos out there. And don't forget that he wants to legalize drugs. You can find that video too. Go to youtube and search for Obama drugs.
I believe that when the Michelle video's are posted and her college thesis is posted, you will gain great insight. Those of you who are voting for more than just a color in an empty suit.
Please, Obama's history reads like a Stephen King book. Horrors.

First I would like to say, God is neither a
Democrat or a Republican. He will not choose the American President. The people have that responsibility. I wondered how long after Senator Clinton left the race it would take for the hate and suspicion to turn on Senators Obama and McCain. Free speech is a cherished "right" for us in this wonderful country. I hate to see such a right used to vilify and judge another person who is unable to reply.

the most bizzare thing lamented by libby (that you lefties out there) is that the media at any level has a anything other than a huge left, socialist bias. How can you, with a strait face, having done even the most cursory research, say this ?
Some 77% of news stories in the last 30 years have a left leaning spin. What those of you in LaLa land can't see is that the opinion you think is yours, isn't. It's the media socialist opinion.
The reason the media loves Hussein is 1, because in the pea sized brains, they find it easy to sensationalize and 2, because anything bad for tradtional USA is good for their cause.
But hey, dont worry kids, we are alllmost no differant than all the other armpit countries out there. Hooray for you.

Actually, corporations can't donate to campaigns, so figures giving amounts from corporations are in error.

Who is running for President? James Johnson? No...
The repubs are going to try to throw anything to try to distract us from what is going on in our Country under a republican administration.
The economy is badly damaged [hey, I wonder if there is a connection between $135 a barrel oil and the fact that we invaded and trashed one of the leading oil producing countries in the world?). Do you think a de-stabalized Middle East has anything to do with $4 a gallon?
America's standing around the globe is badly damaged.
Yes, the repubs are going to try to distract us from the badly damaged situation they have put us in.
Don't be distracted.

The Post in this instance should do its own reporting. This is gleaned from the Wall Street Journal, which under Rupert Murdoch has blurred the line between its formerly non-ideological news reporting and Neanderthal Right editorial staff. I'm sure the KKK has a Web site, too. Stop being so lazy, stenographer.

So has it really come to this? That every single person who works on either campaign has to undergo an FBI background check? This is getting absurd. Both these guys have "advisors" who are in Business, and they will have ethical problems if the standard is so high that only the Pope could pass the impossible "clean as a whistle" background check (oh wait, the Pope WAS a Hitler Youth...)

Obama is the fresh face, it's all about change. The masses yearn for a leader who is honest and full of integrity. Yet in his short political career, our new messiah has managed to take contributions from a terrorist, be nurtured by a race baiting preacher, and get his own "discounted" land deal a la Rezko. No matter that we have been warned about devils in sheeps clothing, we still hope against home that the one has come.

How can your nation expect to reclaim your self-appointed role as Ruler of the Free World without at least pretending to be rational and reasonable adults - with a minimum of having read the facts of this election, the characters and choices for November.

Ok ... so the Republicons are trying to make an issue out of the fact that the Fannie Mae CEO and Obama advisor got loans from Countrywide? I'm pretty sure the Fannie MAE CEO has pretty good credit, and I'm pretty sure his good credit will get him "blow market average" loans. I didn't see anything about him not keeping up with his payments on his loans. This sounds like a total non-issue bordering on kneejerk desperation by a confused and disoriented republicon slander machine.

I am equally surprised, as a former Fannie Mae employee, that the Obama camp would select Jim Johnson as their chief headhunter for selecting a vice president. You are absolutely correct regarding your concerns about Jim Johnson who Frank Raines took over from at Fannie Mae. Many of us former employees, strongly believe that Jim Johnson's reign was also very much apart of the financial woes of the corporation's very large accounting scandal. To say the least, we are not impressed with this selection and disappointed. I also agree that Jim Johnson represents the wheelers and dealers that Obama says he is going to fight. NVTL, they say that's Washington where there are many contradictions, politics as usual, and no permanent enemies; just permanent interest. Change indeed. The trick is to be able to rise above the usual guard and make a difference. We shall be watching.

How far below average were the rates? How many loans did he make in all? How much money did he borrow at above average rates? What were the rates? - Posted by: AmericanVoice
Here's the dope.
Loan Amt Date His Rate Avg Rate
392,500 Oct '98 6.375% 6.2%
1,300,000 Nov '01 5.25% 6.0%
971,650 Jun '03 3.875% 4.3%
information courtesy Wall Street Journal
Seems to me the rates for the second and third loans were half to three-quarter percent below the average market rate. Seems to me Caesar's wife should be above suspicion.
Particularly if Caesar has been promoting himself as a "different kind of politician", and railing against "federal" lobbyists.

Of course this is MINOR compared to McCain's economic advisor, Phil Gramm. Phil Gramm wrote the majority of McCain's Economic Policy info sheet & then taught him what to say. Up until April, Gramm was the top lobbyist for USB (well known for their predatory mortgage lending practices). When he was a U.S. Senator from Texas, Gramm spearheaded efforts to pass banking reform laws, including the landmark Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999, which modernized Depression-era laws separating banking, insurance and brokerage activities. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act started the deregulation of Mortgage lending, the direct result of which is our current housing crisis.
As McCain admits he doesn't know much about the economy...it is scary to think that he leans on Gramm for advise in this area. The same Gramm who sold the American Public down the river.

There is no doubt the man has good ideas, excellent rhetoric, a great delivery, and hopefully, the best intentions.
The problem for us is who is this guy? What does he really stand for? Are we being manipulated with what we want to hear? Should we as a nation take him on blind faith? Some many questions, so few real answers and we let him get by with it.
Really, can he be so squeaky clean? He has been packaged well and positioned perfectly for our turbulent time but what is the price we will have to pay. Doesn't that bother you?
Politics make for strange bed-fellows. It never fails, things will come out. They are slowly but it is being rationalized.
We seem as a nation to be looking for someone to snap their fingers and everything will be OK and we will be in Utopia. There is no doubt the man has good ideas, good rhetoric, a great delivery, and hopefully the best intentions.

What is really scary about Obama is that not enough has come out. We need the reality. We do not know who this guy is.
Hillary and Bill know something and were waiting for reality to come to the surface.
Why do you think she stayed in it so long? They know something. Time just ran out.

He receieved low rates ( lower then the lowest being offered by Countrywide Financial at the time) because he was listed as a friend of Mozillo. Mozillo by the way is the CEO of Countrywide. You guys that doubt this or are questioning this look at the various news media, including the NYT. He of course was not the only one but he is a key advisor to Obama. The others who recieved the same treatment are not advisors to any campaign. He, Johnson, was the head of Fannie Mae, the quasi government mortgage lender and recieved this preferential treatment while in that capacity. Expand your knowledge base and check the facts.

Tempest in a teapot if I ever saw one.
The Republicans are so filthy dirty that they're desperate to find a little mud on Obama. Before it was the "friend of a friend" attack ("you once knew someone who did something bad!") and now it's the "less than ethically perfect staffer"-gate. I mean, "below average" loan rates? The horror! Only about 50% of all people get "below average" loan rates!
Run for the hills!
If this is all the Republicans can come up with, November is going to be a massacre of epic proportions. Congratulations President Obama!

Keep digging Republican toe tappers!
Good luck!
Hmmmmmmm....where have Republicans failed America?...........
Ethics: Abramoff Scandals, Libby outs a CIA operative, Gonzo politicizes Justice, and just about anyone in the White House could be labeled a liar, torture, extraordinary rendition, non FISA wiretaps.....etc........
Foreign Policy: Iraq war, AQ still on the loose, Bin Laden still on the loose; and are we safer?..................
Responsive Government: Katrina, bungling Iraq war intelligence, maybe even bungling the 9/11 intelligence......etc.......
I'm going to do everything in my power to see that Republicans LOSE in the next elections. I mean across the board, state legislatures to the White House, there is no longer a place for Republicans in the world I want to live in.
The Republican of today is an indefensible talking point repeating polarizer of nations, which in my mind no longer deserves quarter.

I would think that Mr. Obama is trying to surround himself with people knowledgeable in economics.
All staffers on both sides are going to be targets for scandals.
I don't care about his rates he probably has so much money now that it is moot.
I just want someone to get us out of the mess we are in right now. And if this man is as smart as everyone says he is maybe we all should just wait and see.
If there is something fishy going on don't you think we will find out about it sooner rather then later.

here's Obama's response, I guarantee: "He's not the James Johnson I knew". By the time his campaign is over, he'll know less people then he did before.

We the people of the 57 States of America believe in the redistribution of goods and services (unless you're in the senate) in order to form a perfect marxist union.
20 years for which is stands and the lincoln bedroom goes to Farahkahn.
one nation under islam and justice ONCE-and-for-all.
Good Night and Allah bless us. President Barak Hussain Obama.

I love it!
This is all we are going to hear from Republicans until Nov.
We should be talking about McCain and the issues......
McCain and Republicans were so wrong about Iraq so many times......like
"There's not a history of clashes that are violent between Sunnis and Shiahs. So I think they can probably get along." [MSNBC, 4/23/03]
...............uh what?......or this precious one:
"I'm confident we're on the right course." [ABC News, 3/7/04]
.................or how about the VETO proof GI bill that McCain is against?
.......many Democrats and many Republicans support that bill. CAN'T DENY THAT RIGHT?........
Why, when Congress finally comes together to agree on something, McCain wants to stand with the Neo-con Republican tragedians of our country to stop the bill? I don't get it...........
McCain has lost his way. He supports bringing the troops home, in body bags for a hundred years...............
He wasn't tortured in Viet Nam, according to his own republican standards; he received advanced interrogation techniques, of which he approves of nowadays.

Take that to the election booth.

If this is the only way for the RNC to try and get Obama, then they can kiss the White House goodbye in November. All they can find is garbage about associations...McBush has done things himself (not by association) aka Keating 5. RNC - get a life!

That's funny - about half of all borrowers get rates below average. That's what 'average' means. If this guy had TWO loans 'below average', how many loans did he have that were above average? Two? That would be pretty average, wouldn't it? Is McCain going to disclose which half of his staff got below-average home loans?

OB is a hypocrite. Often time he claims one thing but does something else under the table. Obama is also surrounded himself with people who have questionable deals and background. I don't trust OB.

gotta love it that the morally clean obama camp is soiled by these new revelations....if a top mccain adviser was doing the same thing, obama would be all over the news moralizing about mccain's failure la da d a, and his lackeys on CNN and elsewhere would be jumping on board in support...on another note, would have a word of caution about all the various commenters and pundits talking about Hillary being the next Supreme court nominee...don't forget that she would need senate confirmation, and there is a tremendous amount of hanky panky that would have to be addressed fully in any supreme court process before the US senate...remember how the Dems dumped TX senator tower for Defense secretary, mostly due to tower's drinking problem...and how MO Sen. Ashcroft barely won confirmation as US Atty Genl. when Bush 2 became prez....and turnabout is fair play, the Repubs (and maybe a fair # of Dems) would roast Hillary over the coals on any trip to the supreme court....and she might still not be confirmed by a 51-49 vote....

So What? He got rates below average? Maybe he deserved rates below average based on his risk profile, and not his ties or influence. Give me a break...
