Barack Obama
Obama Distances Himself from VP Vetters
By Perry Bacon Jr.
ST. LOUIS -- Pressed on the involvement of one of the members of his vice-presidential search committee with a controversial mortgage company, Sen. Barack Obama said of the people helping him find a running mate that they are serving in a "volunteer, unpaid position" and "these aren't folks who are working for me."
The Wall Street Journal reported this weekend that Jim Johnson, an Obama fundraiser and backer, received $7 million in loans from Countrywide, a mortgage firm Obama blasted in March for giving its executives huge bonuses in the midst of the home foreclosure crisis. Johnson, who is one of three members of a committee that will help "vet" Obama's vice-presidential pick, received the mortgages at rates below market averages, according to the paper, a claim Obama aides have disputed.
Obama did not address the specific controversy, instead describing criticism of his advisers' connections as a "game."
In a wide-ranging press conference here, following a tour of Barnes Jewish Hospital, the Illinois senator largely ducked questions about whether he would help Hillary Clinton pay off her campaign debt ("It was not a topic that was the focus of my meeting with her") how many of the 10 town halls John McCain has proposed that he would attend ("it will be probably be somewhat fewer than 10, but more than the three we have already agreed to" and the last time he had had a cigarette ("I don't remember, it's been a while ... months").
Before taking questions from reporters, Obama, who had just toured this hospital with a nurse, repeatedly blasted McCain's proposals on a variety of pocketbook issues, following the Arizona senator's attack on him earlier in the day.
The two speeches showed a huge range differences, as McCain wants more trade agreements with foreign nations, which Obama is skeptical of. As well, Obama is proposing $100 billion a year in health care spending, while McCain proposes that same amount in corporate tax cuts, and McCain is proposing to further deregulate the health insurance market, while Obama wants to require insurance companies to offer plans to anyone who wants it, with the government offering subsidies if insurance will cost too much.

There is way too much HATE going on between both sides. This rumors about McCain crashing planes and Obama is a Muslim should be ignored. You should look at the facts. A fact about Obama is that he has socialist policies of taking money from the rich and giving to the poor. But in order to do this he has to place a heavy tax burden on the rich and corporations. The rich are smart and all they will do is move their investments and jobs overseas. This fact will hurt the US economy. I have worked for two fortune 500 companies and both have moved jobs overseas due to the heavy regulations and possibility of organized labor. Look at Obama's fellow democrats that have opposed US oil drilling, refineries and nuclear power plants. Their refusal to allow this expansion has hurt the hard working people that vote for Democrats. I don't hate Obama just his policies. McCain has a more capitalist approach to the economy. Let people keep more money and choose what to do with it. What does Donald Trump do with his millions, he uses it to make more and more. He stimulates the economy by doing business. Will we have less poor with Obama; no we will have more people dependant upon the government. I have family and in laws that depend upon government programs. My hard earned money goes to these lazy family members. All they do is work just enough to get government assistance and spend the rest of their time laying on the couch with a six pack watching Dale Jr try to win. This country was founded with the belief that all were created equal. And that everyone has an equal opportunity to do what he or she wants. And for most of this county's history people did it with out government. We fought a Civil War, Two World Wars and countless other obstacles without the government trying to take care of each and every citizen. This country would be so much better without Obama's policies. If people struggle it should be their family who helps them not the government. Drive through a poor neighborhood and count how many have a dish, cable, $1000 dollar rims on a $500 dollar car, or cell phones. All they need is food, shelter, education, access to medical care and clothing. If they want more than the basics. Or want food stamps or a government housing check they need to go out and work 40,50 or more hours a week like a large part of America does to get what they want. I have worked some 70 plus hour weeks to get what I want why can't they. So if you support Obama you are supporting a Socialist idea of big government and heavy taxation. (Which the rich will still avoid) If you support McCain you are supporting a smaller less intrusive government. Neither will stop the poor no matter what they do. Most of the poor choose to be poor waiting for their superman to get them out of poverty instead of doing it the only way possible, ON THEIR OWN!

When Obama denies his muslim background as asserted by the brotherhttp://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/12918.htm, then you will get an appropriate response.

Thisi is absurd.
Obama did not 'disassociate' himself from the VP vetters. He pointed out that these people do not work for him and thus are not potential future white house employees. So why 'vet' them?
On the other hand, I understand the commenters here who claim this somehow says something negative about Obama's judgement. They support McCain or Clinton for and all opinions flow from that.
It's funny how different people can interpret the same situation so differently, and that their opinions are completely predictable based on who they want to be president.
But this VP vetter thing is such a mild scandal, you'd think we could be a little objective here.

Lets see:
D - Demeaning
E - Elitist
M - Meek
O - Obtuse
C - Careless
R - Replusive
A - Angst
T - Timid
So "O" means to be Obtuse. No repub bashing either I am a proud Indie and have been for over 30 yrs - these two parties have driven this country into the ground and it is time for them both to get out of town.

His association with Ayers, Wright and Rezko where what was neccessary to ascend in the chicago political machine. Now that they don't fit into his new political mantra, he kicks them to the curb. He is exactly like every other politican.

That depends on perspective. I prefer the following:

So Obama's character is flawed. So is mine, so is yours. Do you know of anyone whose character isn't flawed. Certainly not Bush,Cheney, of John McCain. There is no human being whose character is not flawed. Obama wants to move this country in a different direction. Last time I checked a very large number of Americans, who voted for him to be the Democratic nominee for president, also want us to change directions.

Typical of Republican candidates, such as McCain to advocate reducing taxes further for corporations, while being opposed to Barack wanting to spend abou the same amount helping truly needy people, by expanding health care coverage.
I wonder how anyone who is truly a Christian, in the sense of believing in the ideals of Jesus, as described in the Bible can, support tax breaks for businesses over helping the needy, with health care most Americans take for granted. Jesus was not a supporter of supply side ecoomics or of helping the rich over the poor, as has characterized Reagan, Bush II policies, which McCain seeks to continue.

J. House,
I am happy that I came back to this post. First of all, I am Nigerian, born and bred. If you are familiar with the place, I am of the Igbo tribe (gaa juo onye omasiri). I am as black as can be claimed. Both parents are and none of them have been to this country.
I was not raised to support someone because he is of the same skin color. That would be madness.
Assuming my permutations are wrong, a stint in the Illinois house, two years in the senate and a speech at party convention does not entitle one to run for the office of the presidency in the most powerful nation on earth; not in the 21st century. That is madness.

It is interesting how America is being deceived by our dear Obama.
As an african living in the US, I have the privilege of knowing that Obama is a rowdy ingrate that hopes to destroy the society that raised him and gave him all.
I strongly suspect that he has SYMPATHY for the islamic cause, whatever it is. He is not a christian in my opinion. And I will prove it here.
Remember when he said, he has been worship Jesus for the past 20 years? Well, he did not say exactly that. He said, "I've been going to the same church for 20 years, praising Jesus." The thing about this statement is that Christians don't speak this way; moslems do. It would have been more appropriate for him to say, "I've been going to the same mosque for 20 years, praising Allah." Now, that statement sounds realistic. Christians use the word "praise" to glorify or hail not to express their "worship" of Christ. On the world wide web only Obama has used this expression and I have put up a link for you in proof of my suspicion. Click on the link http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1T4CYBA_en___US255&q=%22years,+praising+Jesus%22&start=30&sa=N
Now, you can understand why his friends are preachers who are embarrassment to their acclaimed faith and criminals who want to do harm to the US.
Finally, he told AIPAC that he will ensure that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided." Everyone familiar with the middle situation knows that this is a tall order standing next to "impossible without war." Again, Obama has shown that charisma and prophetic vision of knowing what nobody knows, as he did with the Iraq war.
My interpretation, either Obama is mocking the Isreali postion on Jerusalem (Jerusalem is not recognized as Israel's capital by any foreign government) or he is just finding his way power. This is not wisdom, just as it was not wisdom when he, while an Illinois legislator, oppossed and sought to protect Iraq against the wish of MAJORITY of Americans. It is not wisdom; it is a latent SYMPATHY for an enemy that wants to kill YOU.
You may disagree with me, and I hope and pray that I am wrong. Like most blacks, I would also love to see a black president in this great land of the free. But not at the expense of the truth.

Senator McCain is the lowest of figures. Lets put him Compton for a week or two, and we'll see if he keeps touting his POW experience.
What an incredible joke. Duty, honor, country, John McCain you definitely uphold those. John McCain did his duty of sucking as a soldier and crashing a million dollar plane. John McCain has the honor of being a despicable man who will do anything to get elected.
And John McCain represents the racist country of the past. His privileged white background may have carried him this far, but he's now facing a changed America, haha.
Posted by: Gobama | June 10, 2008 3:29 PM
There is no argument against Barack Obama.
All people can say is:
He had shady connections to Rezko and his wife bought a house from him;
He belonged to a racist church for twenty years - he first refused to disavow them, but then later flip-flops and disavows them;
His mentor was a racist minister who called on his congregation to shout "God Da*m America" - he first refused to disavow him, but then later did so when it was politically necessary;
He refused to wear a flagpin and put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem - again he flip-flopped. First he said he didn't need to wear the flag-pin to show his patriotism, then because he's running against McCain, a true patriot, he decides to wear the flag pin;
He criticizes Hillary for voting for the war, when he didn't feel the need to be on the Senate floor when the vote took place - he's voted not-present on many important votes, and during his short time in the Senate he's been campaigning, neglecting his duties to his state for his own selfish ambitions;
He flip-flops on the capital gains tax and seeks to increase the burden on all Americans by increasing the corporate tax, which will only lead to more U.S. corporations leaving America and taking jobs with them overseas...
The list goes on, but really there is no argument against Obama.
Seriously, if you don't see the merits of Obama's campaign you are a redneck, ignorant racist.
The liberal elite and the Leviathan Media totally has it right on this one. If you can't think for yourself, let others "smarter" than you think for you.
Posted by: No Argument | June 10, 2008 3:23 PM
Shame on John McCain for sinking to this level. Are we beginning to see John McCain's true character? So it turns out that. those who said that McCain is just more of the same may have been right. Stick to discussing the important issues.
Barack Obama hit the nail right on the head, when he called this a "game." As most people know those who play games always have an ulterior hidden motive. Americans deserve a President who tells it the way it is, and doesn't stoop to foolish game playing in an effort to achieve advantage by spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt. On the internet we call those that do that Trolls. America does not want, or need another Troll in the White House. We've suffered with Bush for eight years.

Obama's judgment is flawed. Imagine having Caroline Kennedy (fairy queen) on the VP selection team. Does she have any experience? Now Obama is seeking Sen. Clinton's help to put him to the White House. The Liberal Media and the Moonies who have voted for Obama should learn a lesson by Obama losing this general election to Sen. McCain. By the way, will Obama be indicted in Rezko case?

Good Change and Cyros -
You guys are obviously racist. "Irrelevant issues." You think black youth being locked up is an irrelevant issue. You can't have a strong economy when you have a substantial portion of blacks being incaercerated. Its white folk like you try to destroy Obama. And what has Ralph Nader done for this country absolutely nothing. Its another case of another sad white man who couldn't get the job done. We need a new face in the white house because quite frankly, white folk can't get the job done. There's still genocide in Darfur and billions of Africans are without vital food and water. And yes it is racist to only care about rich white folk in America while there's starving black people in Africa and black youth being incaerceated in the inner cities.
And "third world armpit" - thats the type of racist xenophoic talk that got America into this mess. Have fun drinking your moonshine and making love to your cousin buddy, America is changing.

In his January 24 "The Nation" commentary titled "Subprime Obama" Max Fraser pointed out that predatory lenders "targeted the most vulnerable; black and latino borrowers have been twice as likely to receive sub-prime loans as whites: female homeowners, 30 percent more likely than male; black women five times more likely than white men.
But, Fraser noted that of the Democratic candidates, only Obama has not called for a moratorium and interest rate freeze. The article said "though he has been a proponent of mortgage fraud legislation in the Senate, he has remained silent on further financial regulations."
The "Nation" piece quoted Josh Bivens of the Economic Policy Institute who said "Edwards and Clinton talk much more about regulation of the financial industry going forward, and to the extent that blame is placed, they tend to place it on lenders for steering people into loans they couldn't afford."

I agree that the country needs change, and numerous candidates in the past have run on a change message. The questions is who will bring the right change. Obama will bring the Wright change. The change of the politics of hate - its already happened; America is more divided than ever and the Democratic party is fractured. Instead of focusing on fixing the economy and ensuring that America is a safe and prosperous place Americans are more concerned about other non-relevant issues (as seen in the posts below).
The Democrats don't have the answer. They had the misfortune of letting elites and a Leviathan media pick their candidate. Obama will bring the type of change that will leave everyone without any change in their pockets.
The Republicans also don't have the answer.
The solution is America's Advocate, Ralph Nader. Ralph Nader will get to the bottom of outrageous gas prices and protect the American consumer. He will not raise the capital gains tax, which will only discourage investment (Obama wants to do this) or raise corporate taxes, which would send even more U.S. corporations and jobs overseas (Obama also wants to do this). Nader would provide real economic solutions instead of empty words and false promises. Obama will say anything to get elected, including contradicting himself and his message. Republican's don't have the answer.
Implore Ralph Nader to take his duty as America's Advocate. There are a lot of Obama fanatics who seek to destroy anyone who challenges him (e.g. Bill Clinton used to be the champion of the Democratic party, the Obama camp tried to paint him as a racist), but ask him to have the courage to stand up to both elite manipulation and the Leviathan media.

Here we go again. The anointed one says one thing, distances himself from the people/staff around him who are saying or doing what he says he deplores, then he blames the opponent on "playing games"(your best defense is a good offense). Give me a break. This is "new politics"? Changing the way we do business in Washington? Same old, same old. Typical politician with a shiny new look. Audacity of Hype is more like it. If this is as an important decision as there is out there for him at this point, what's wrong with asking that he use advisors who have no "ties" (aka sounds similar to lobbyists, eh?) with questionable, conflict-of-interest decisions or relationships? Not alot to ask!
This long-time Independent, turned Democrat (not for Obama), is turning back to Independent. America is in serious trouble if this guy gets elected. "NOBama. Keep the Change".

Not everyone who goes to war is a hero. Don't you people remember what you were telling us in 2004 about a highly decorated one running against the two draft-dodgers-in- chief?

I find it a laughable hypocricy that McSame with his buss full of lobbyists could even broach the subject of ethics in relation to Obama's vetting team. Does Obama have to vet the vetters? How about vetting the vetter who will be actually doing the vetting? Give me a break. There is a big difference between searching for a VP nad hiring lobbyists and offereing them cabinent posts like McCain. McCain's attempt to project himself as a candidate for change has got to be one of the most laughable strategies in American political history. So lets recap....Obama should vet the vetters of the vetters, McCain can just cruise around with lobbyists in his buss all campaign, and McCain is the candidate for change. I think i just heard a rimshot.

Jon,
Think about this logically. A hero is someone who changes the status quo. Someone who brings about something positive, and good. What did McCain do? He grew up in a white privileged background. His dad was a navy admiral. He used his legacy and piggy-backed off of him and got into the United States Naval Academy through his dad's connections. The man has done nothing on his own merit. How is he a hero?
Not only that, he was a naval fighter pilot. He crashes his plane. He deserves a medal for that? Here in the real world, if you crash something, you pay for it.
And who is the party of hate? The Republican-led government has been going around killing innocents by the millions in the Middle East. More millions are starving and dying in the streets of Iraq and Afghanistan because of our war. We've suspended civil liberties in America. In Gitmo, we hold people for no reason at all besides the fact that they look "Arab". If McCain is a hero, then the detainees in Guantanamo and the black youth who are locked up everyday in American prisons are superheros because they face far worse than McCain ever did in his privileged white life.

Lol a lot of the pro Obama posts in this thread are perfect examples of the tools a lot of "progressive" Americans have become. You parrot what mainstream media says, and can only base your issues on ideals and accusations not rational thought.
We might as well just elect Obama and democrats in Congress and accelerate America's demise into a 3rd world armpit.
Posted by: Cryos | June 10, 2008 2:41 PM
Obama always seems to be distancing himself people...I wonder why??
In a new story - apparently Obama is vetting former military leaders. I find this curious as well since his sole independent stand on the Iraq war was so right and according to "him" his approach on Iran is the best. Sounds like he is very capabale on matters of foreign policy..or did he just want us to believe that during the primaries.
Posted by: gskrptr | June 10, 2008 2:38 PM
So Obama chooses a "volunteer" committee to choose a VP and he "distances" himself from it cause they aren't getting paid (by him)?
This is hilarious!!! Is he going to "distance" himself from his wife and kids next?
The fraud can't even take responsibility for HANDPICKING a group to choose his own VP!!! Can he take responsiblity for ANYTHING?!?!

Obama continues to show his class. He's against something unless they are working for him and then it is ok. I suppose why would he think this situation is bad; its no worse than the Tony Rezko land purchase.
Law firms representing the subprime firms are large contributors to his campaign too but that must be ok too and I'm sure has nothing to do with the fact he supporters bailout packages for the lenders. Only evil right wing republicans would do something like that.
Oh well done with the logic. This election has been and will be decided by the mainstream media. A large majority of the public is no longer capable of making their own rational decisions. Proof of this is the democratic congress has done nothing but political grandstanding repeating endlessly "republicans are bad; they are for Big , they support the rich, etc." and a large percentage of the non-thinking public have sucked it up and will vote democrats in office in November.
I can't blame the liberal attitude that the American people are too dumb to make their own decisions so the government should control wealth and distribute it as they see fit. I didn't want to belive it but you see increasing evidence of the American sheep majority as time goes on. Repetition of stereotypes trumps logic and reason.

Obama supporters should be ashamed of some of the comments on this page. And I support Obama but can't believe this is the type of people supporting him.

Funny to see a comment from a Obama support saying that a McCain a former POW isn't a war hero. The new party of hate THE DEMOCRATS.

McCain cares about POW's?

This guy is a turd.
I'm a sixth grade teacher, and due to the historic election, I did a mock election with my students. When we did a debate, and the kids started saying nasty things about each other, I chastised them. Their response, people like Obama and Clinton do it all the time.
Obama will bring change. He sets an example that unfortunately, many of our youth follow. Obama will bring in a new age of hypocrisy, concealed hate, and selfishness.

the only way you are in a classroom with 6th graders is if you are sitting in there a la Adam Sandler. Nice try...
Seriously, why would Johnson's financial issues have to do with vetting a VP? What is he going to do - put his loan officer on the list? He is offering advice, not sitting in his cabinet. And if slicky boy Charlie Black can be on McCain's payroll, what is the issue with an unpaid volunteer with some background in vetting VP candidates?

McCain in his own words:
Posted by: JC | June 10, 2008 2:19 PM
No, EvilEmpire has a point; when we engage in pre-emptive war on doctored "Intelligence" and submit humans to waterboarding...we are becoming what we despise. When we start to sacrifice our freedoms for the claim of "Homeland Security"...we are no better than those we would call "Evil Doers".
Posted by: JimBo | June 10, 2008 2:17 PM
McCain = old dude who belongs in a house, just not the White House. Lets put him in an old folks home. If he wants, we'll paint if white for him. :-).
We'll give him a bible to use as toilet paper and maybe then, he'll understand what the so-called "terrorists" at Gitmo are going through (and that's literally only just a piece).
Posted by: Gobama | June 10, 2008 2:12 PM
EvilEmpire writes with a belly full of food, clean running water, money in it's pocket and most importantly, the freedom to dissent without getting, disappeared -- like what happens to people if it's ilk in the real evil empires, e.g. Russian, Iran, Syria, Nicaragua, etc...
Nice try EM -- but I've been 'round the world a few times and know the truth. You're on your way out and are a sore loser IMO.
Posted by: tradamerica | June 10, 2008 2:10 PM
Are any of you politically affiliated raconteurs even slightly, internally, embarrassed with your callous disregard for truth. Not the truth as you see, it, or as your opponent sees it, but the third truth, you know, the "real" truth. Which is: Washington is full of pompous-assed career politicians who pander New Orleans doormen to the lobbyists.
77 lobbyists for every 1 politician in Washington.
Nice huh. No wonder the Independent voting block is the largest demographic on the rise these days.
Look out Dems and Repubs. We're on our way in and you're on your way out!

I absolutely love the people who comment on WaPO. It's great to see that common Americans have some common sense (unlike the writer of this ridiculous article). Only in America, ladies and gentlemen, are people rewarded in the military for sucking at their job. John McCain is a hero because he crashed his plane. What a crock of bs.
Look at who enlists in the military. It is usually people that are stupid and are susceptible to brainwashing. The government puts up a sexy commercial, slaps on a bonus, and gives you a uniform and a bunch of idiots sign right up. Its no wonder that the military has recently let in people of the lowest IQ's and convicted felons into this sad institution that continues to murder innocent people.
We are the murders and the perpetrators here, and people wonder why the world hates us. I'm tired of being spit on when I leave the country and its people like Bush, Clinton, and McCain that have created this mess.

To Obamtard...
You teach sixth grade and use terms like "this guy is a turd"? You are a prime example of why we're ready for a change.
Posted by: JimBo | June 10, 2008 1:59 PM
America today is the evil empire. We murder innocent Iraqis everyday and people are held in Gitmo for crimes they didn't commit.
John McCain's only "qualification is being in a POW camp. The communists abided by the rules of the Geneva Convention. Unfortunately we do not.
Its absolutely hypocripitical that Reagan dubbed the Communists the Evil Empire. We are the Evil Empire today. Look in the mirror. If John McCain says he's a presidential candidate just because he sucked at his job and got captured, everyone in Gitmo is a presidential candidate. They have suffered far worse.
Posted by: TheEvilEmpire | June 10, 2008 1:58 PM
Gobama is right on. The McCain-Clinton coalition is at it again. Unfortunately they have WaPO and various other media outlets in their pockets. Their candidates had no chance. McCain is too old for the White House and Hillary Clinton is just an absolute joke.
It was ridiculous with her 2am phone call ads. Seriously people, if we faced a national security threat, how could she be qualified to handle that call? Our national security threats today come from conservative regimes where they are distrustful of women. Do you really think we'd be safer with a skirt in the White House that our "enemies" wouldn't meet with. That's why Clinton was so eager to say she would drop nukes. Clinton would've been more of Bush - no dialogue.
Obama has a new foreign policy approach. He would meet with Iran and other Middle Eastern countries leaders and look for real solutionis.

Keep digging Republicans...
You know yall GOPers' are in the crapper when this type of stuff is all you can dig up.
.....but I got to tell you....watching the Republicans squirm makes me happy.
Hmmmmmmm....where have Republicans failed America?...........
Ethics: Abramoff Scandals, Libby outs a CIA operative, Gonzo politicizes Justice, and just about anyone in the White House could be labeled a liar, torture, extraordinary rendition, non FISA wiretaps.....etc........
Foreign Policy: Iraq war, AQ still on the loose, Bin Laden still on the loose; and are we safer?..................
Responsive Government: Katrina, bungling Iraq war intelligence, maybe even bungling the 9/11 intelligence......etc.......
I'm going to do everything in my power to see that Republicans LOSE in the next elections. I mean across the board, state legislatures to the White House, there is no longer a place for Republicans in the world I want to live in.
The Republican of today is an indefensible talking point repeating polarizer of nations, which in my mind no longer deserves quarter.

How is this news?
There are people dying in Africa and a racist WaPO is reporting on completely irrelevant information. This is just another classic smear tactic.
The Clinton supporters have hi-jacked this newspaper. What happened to objective journalism, this is the biggest bunch of garbage I've seen. Your candidate lost, get over it.

Obama is being incredibly disingenuous and just plain stupid when he says that these people, whom he has tasked to help him make one of the most important executive decisions that he will make in his campaign, do not "work for [him]". The guy is just a shadow of the inspiring politician of February, who may well get caught from behind by McCain if he keeps this up.

I think that Obama makes a mistake when he distances himself from the people he asked to help him. To say these aren't people who work for him when he asked them to do work for him -even unpaid- is a mistake.
If he keeps doing this people will then turn him down when he asks for help.
I think that if he thinks that the attacks on Johnson are specious he should say so. If he thinks they have validity then get rid of Johnson.
