Solis Doyle Joins Obama Campaign

Updated 1:56 p.m.
By Anne E. Kornblut
FLINT, Mich.-- The Obama campaign announced on Monday that it has chosen Patti Solis Doyle to a key general election post, making her the first prominent Clinton official to make the leap to the other side.

But it is not exactly being seen by Clinton loyalists as an olive branch.

Obama is installing Solis Doyle as chief of staff to the future vice presidential nominee, who has not yet been picked. Given that Solis Doyle was fired from the Clinton campaign, is now at odds with several senior officials who remained and has a strained relationship with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton herself these days, the appointment may well signal that Clinton's chances of being picked for the vice presidential slot are close to nil.

Although Solis Doyle devoted her adult life to working for Clinton and once counted her among her closest friends, her departure from the campaign was a rough one. Loyalists openly blamed her for the internal warring and strategic failures; after she left, Clinton expressed hard feelings toward Solis Doyle for the way money had been spent. Fairly or not, Solis Doyle is not the person the Obama campaign would pick to send a signal that it is about to welcome Clinton on board. If anything, some Clinton loyalists privately said, it is an insult.

But as long-standing as Solis Doyle's ties to Clinton may be, her Chicago roots run even deeper. Her first job in politics was on the campaign staff on Mayor Richard M. Daley, a leading Obama patron, and she has a long friendship with the Illinois senator's chief political adviser, David Axelrod. She also is close to Rep. Rahm Emanuel, another Chicagoan and Obama confidant.

I can careless BHO's inexperience or policy or his color. But all his rise is based on he is different kind politician. How different?

By prevent muslin women stand behind his rally?

By eat his words opt out public financing?

By wink with Canadians that he doesn't really mean to against NAFT.

By inject the race into the compaign?

All these show his charachater, which he doesn't have! Then it begs the question? What his compagian base on? How he will govern if ever he is get elected!

Wake up people before it's too late!

Snerdgrasse, Don't try to be smart here. I am not republican but independent. I have been in the Anit-Bush column for eight years. But now I see him more likeable than your far left wing liberal friends. See the product you liberals trying to sell to American people. BHO is cocky but at mean time not sure himself. Michelle Obama is just down right angry and mean even though they try to soften her up on the "View" today! GWB may mess up big time, this doesn't mean American need or can afford to go the other extreme. HRC is my first choice and John McCain is second. BHO - never! If you want an African American President, I have one for you - Colin Powell! I hope and believe American poeple will have common sense. The democrats will definately get Senate and Congress and you have John McCain to be moderate, so we can gradually correct mistakes GWB made. Not a all far left Government. We have been slapped on the right and don't want and need to be slapped on the left! Wakeup, whatever party you belong!

Patti Solis Doyle is the sister of Chicago 25th Ward Alderman Danny Solis, a powerful Daley ally, whose office is located 1 block from my house. As recently as last week a "Hillary" poster was plasterd on his office window, despite his appearance on local area news stating (or is it job begging?) that he and his sister would most definetly support Obama should Hillary bow out of the race. The Solis family has been harshly criticized for being rubber stamps for Daley's corrupt administration. They are consumate bottom feeders, supporting whomever can set them up with their next gig. Most disturbing is the fact that Obama's children have for years played soccer on the Soccer Association for Youth of Chicago, an athletic organization (YEAH, RIGHT!)run by no other than Danny Solis!!! AMERICA IS ABOUT TO BE HOODWINKED BIG TIME!!!!

Can you BHO supporters name one winner in his big name supporters? You can't! They are all losers! All are President wanne be and can't get even close to the White House. On HRC side, you have a real winner - That's Bill Clinton! If there is no term limit, he could win as many time he wants. If you think Howard Dean, John Kerry and Nance Pelosi have the best judement and therefor can do us any good. You are at your own peril! BHO is a product of Clinton hater and those people would rather lose this election than seeing Clintons move back to the White House! I almost forgot Bill Richardson, Bill Clinton gave him two cabin level job and when he is running president, he can't even get 2% but he can't even have the decency like Al Gore to sit it out. He says he does this for the country? Give me a break!

She was the spy in Clinton's camp and she was the only reason why HRC lost in IA. BHO now can't wait to repay her service at the mean time show his contempt for HRC. Wake up HRC supporters, BHO and his crew doesn't have any respect to HRC and her support. Go John McCain!

Where on earth do you GET this stuff from, librairie?

Posted by: Snerdgrasse | June 17, 2008 6:39 PM | Report abuse

Profromdover, I've read a lot more vitriolic statements about Obama from Clinton supporters than I have the other way around. One has been the aggressor (Clinton supporters) and one has been the responder. I honestly don't know who these people are. I've seen accusations that Obama is a liar and a misogynist and this and that, and I have personally never seen any evidence to back any of it up. The real adults in this argument are those who understand the need to support the nominee of their party, whomever that may be, and who do not become to emotionally attached to one candidate. Neither of these two are God, neither are without flaws, and they agree on the issues 95% of the time (although the gas tax holiday thing seemed like a clear attempt to pander for votes, even though Clinton has to know deep in her heart that is an absurd and stupid policy).

Posted by: DCitalian | June 17, 2008 2:43 PM | Report abuse

This was an unnecessary and dumb move from the usually savvy Obama campaign. How do you lose a 30 point lead and a $100 million dollar pre-Iowa advantage and that merits a big job with Obama? She presided over the most monumental collapse in modern presidential campaign history. Just because she knows people in Chicago makes her a savvy political operative! Arguably Hillary's biggest mistake was to entrust such a huge endeavor of running a national campaign to an untested and incompetent confidant.I just don't get the logic here of Obama. Also, while we're on the subject of logic. Why is it that Obama supporters here and everywhere, who are so ardently committed to him, don't realize they are seriously undermining his chances by going out of their way to piss off Clinton's supporters, when there is absolutely no way he wins without them. This vitriol only makes sense if it all is the work of Republican agent-provocateurs to throw the election by default to McCain. With supporters such as this, in the words of Pogo, "we have met the enemy, and he is us".

Instead of the semi-coherent, typo-ridden rant, librairie, why don't you just answer the question. . .IF HRC is so good, why are so many of the Clintonites (Reich, Richardson, Ammanuel, Doyle), the ones WHO KNOW Hillary SO WELL, LEAVING HER?

Come on, librairie, address the question directly. If you promise to improve your typing, I promise to read your answer

Yes, the Obama campaign is a very nasty machine. People clearly can see this and THAT is why Hillary DID get the popular vote (which would be even higher in numbers against Obama if the caucas state numbers weren't rigged for Obama....you know, people holding doors SHUT so Clinton people couldn't get it!!!....numbers not quite matching up right...Media/Obama misogyny, Democratic Party higher-ups, etc )
The Hillary Clinton people (18+MILLION, and anybody else for that matter) will never carry Obama to the White House. If he truly gave a ratz a-- about his country, he would have stepped down long ago. He will NEVER be voted into the White House.....I don't care WHO steps forward for him......it's ALL POLITICS!....the numbers aren't there for a general election, and ALL OF YOU CHILDISH/NASTY! Obama people are just drinking the Kool-Aid of the Media and Obama. ANYBODY who was actually around for the Kennedy White House KNOW that OBAMA is no Kennedy (or any other great politician for that matter), and I about DIED LAUGHING (if it wasn't so sad), that the media/Obama ad group actually said that Michelle was like Jacquelyn Kennedy!!!.......Oh my GAWD!! WHERE???? are you people from?????

I reckon the point is, if Hillary wants a spot on the ticket, she must seperate herself from the folks within her campaign staff that beat the "go negative" drum.

Just my read of the tea leaves.

The most revealing thing about Senator Clinton is the sheer number of people who worked in the Clinton administration - the people who know the Clintons better than anyone - who have chosen to support Obama. The Bill Richardsons, the Greg Craigs, the Robert Reichs, the Rahm Emmanuels, the list goes on and on. These people know the Clintons better than anyone and their own consciences made them unable to support her.

The problem was not Solis Doyle, it was the product she had to try to sell the American people - the equivalent of trying to sell swimming pools to people in Iowa right now.

I agree with Scribe15: thanks for adding insult to injury to the Clinton campaign. In fact, I encourage them to add more insult. Stick Hillary's face in the mud: she deserves it, especially after all of her mudslinging.

I'm not surprised that many of the Hillary supporters now want to vote for McCain. After all, Hillary and McCain are very much alike, and they have had a long, close relationship:
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-ticket15-2008jun15,0,7726398.story

Nice job of "reaching out" to Clinton supporters, Sen. Obama. The Doyle appointment was harsh. I hope Doyle does for you all that she did for HRC...

Thanks for adding insult to injury to top off yr. nasty campaign for the nomination.
Clinton didn't lose. She just wasn't allowed to win, thanks to the superdelegates and party bosses.
We will remember in November.

Posted by: scribe15 | June 17, 2008 7:17 AM | Report abuse

The Clinton camp getting rid of Doyle was pure sexism. Where was Terry McCauliffe? Mark Penn?
The campaign manager doesn't make strategic decisions or decide where to go and what the message should be. They just hold down the office, kind of like an administrative assistant to the boss.
I gather the job of CofS will only be to coordinate the veep's appearances with HQ. Plus she becomes the Obama campaign's most prominent Latina on staff.

Posted by: DanOregon | June 17, 2008 5:37 AM | Report abuse

Re: " I don't see any sense in getting this incompetent woman"

I doubt she's incompetent. You don't last that long in Washington unless you can deliver.

After February 5th, Hillary needed more black votes, and had already won Latino votes, so she fired Solis Doyle and replaced her with a black woman, Maggie Williams. But it didn't help. Mark Penn's strategy was the problem.

Solis Doyle has worked in one presidential administration, and now possibly two. Oh, but we're supposed to believe she's stupid just because Hillary's staff says so.

THEY are the ones in the unemployment line, not Patti.

What a relief. Barack is not going to pick Clinton for veep. I was getting worried that all those Clinton "supporters" were going to push him into picking her.

I wouldn't want to see Barack have to win by picking her (I guess he could send her to funerals in East Timor etc).

This way he's getting the "amazing talent" of Solis (realpoliticing with the Barack campaign while she was still working for Clinton) and also setting it up for the McCain versus Clinton 2012 race.

What a relief! Go Hillary!!!!!

I'm really amazed how she's been leveled the blame by Clinton and other Clinton insiders but the real culprit who derailed Clinton's campaign was Mark Penn. The guy was absolutely hated by Clinton surrogates to the point where fistfights, arguments, and all kinds of verbal epithets was spewed but Solis Doyle is taking all the heat for Mark Penn's arrogance, his lack of vision, and for sabotaging his own candidates chances by cutting side deals with the Colombian government behind her back while she was publicly rejecting having trade talks with them. That was more of a slap in the face than this hiring. Clintonites get over yourselves, you FIRED her remember.

Hillary hand plucked her human campaign armor, and as the smartest woman in the world knew more than slightly that they could or could not do the job. Hillary was so busy apparently being a star expecting her coronation by February 5, she couldn't possibly give up a moment for a reality check which normally would checking the bank book. Her cronies have been around so long as to bring moth balls with them, which is one of the reasons she lost, and the other is that half the country couldn't stand her. Now half the democratic party feels the same. The Clintons are yesterday's news, and Hillary is about as interesting as Gloria Steinem which isn't much.

I do feel the apointment is rather odd other than as a less than subtle hint to Hillary. What if the VP already has a chief of staff?

Maybe this is two hints. The other that the VP is already known and wants Solis Doyle.

As to Solis Doyle she didn't deserve such treatment. She was not qualified as Hillary well knew. Hillary should have hired profesionals like Obama did.

Posted by: Blame | June 16, 2008 5:56 PM | Report abuse

Seems to me that Mark Penn and Harol Ickes (Ickes being on the board of the Rules and By-Laws Committee as well as being a DNC person) should have been given more blame for the Clinton campaign not winning.
If she'd been a long-time confidant, Clinton saw something in her. So, maybe Obama wants to tap into that experience that she brings.
OR, she has frineds from that campaign and they saw it as a way to bridge the gap in some way with Clinton. Who knows?

Certainly, Patti Solis Doyle's

There are more traitors to Hillary Clinton than there are birds in the sky. Why should we expect Obama's campaign to suddenly show respect for Hillary after he misrepresented her record (and his own) throughout his campaign? You know, "political hack" (the term used by another poster) is just a nasty way of saying "person with actual national political experience."

I don't want a Children's Crusade of naive outsiders, however well-intentioned. I like seeing top-notch talent hired, regardless of tangled Clintonian court politics, gender, or ethnicity. To me, a good analogy might be the Lord of the Rings filming success in New Zealand (for which, read Chicago). From a movie business standpoint, that enterprise was innovative and outstandingly successful in many respects, including having Peter Jackson direct, but he certainly hired top Hollywood and British talent ("movie hacks" in your terminology?) and got them to do a great job. Using professionals does not equal selling out.

By the way, you may also recall talks with Solis Doyle have been rumored in the press for months, ever since Clinton gave her the boot, so perhaps she was just waiting for a polite interval after Clinton's concession.

Posted by: Fairfax Voter | June 16, 2008 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Let's be candid for a moment...

Patti Solis Doyle did Sen. Clinton a disservice duing the campaign. Not to mention, Mark Penn and his "inevitable" strategy.

If you ask me, Hillary was taken down from the inside of her campaign and the job with the Obama campaign is merely a "thank you" for a job well done.

I wish Patti Solis Doyle all the best, really I do...
