Barack Obama
Obama's Emails With Scarlett Johansson
By Shailagh Murray
LOS ANGELES -- As he headed to a Hollywood fundraiser, Sen. Barack Obama downplayed the idea that he hobnobs with actress Scarlett Johansson.
The movie star, who campaigns actively for the Illinois senator, recently told the website Politico, "You'd imagine that someone like the senator who is constantly traveling and constantly 'on' - how can he return these personal emails? But he does, and in his off-time I know he also calls people who have donated the minimum to thank them."
She said Obama had responded to one note about a debate, commenting to her that the questions were "silly."
But speaking to reporters aboard his campaign plane, Obama said the actress doesn't have his personal email address. "She sent one email to Reggie, who forwarded it to me," Obama said, referring to his 26-year-old personal assistant, Reggie Love. "I write saying, 'thank you Scarlett for doing what you do,' and suddenly we have this email relationship"

Why wouldnt he have a romance with scarlett, she is beautiful, believe me if he has a chance he would do that in a heart beat. He is known for lying and he is not honest. Him and his wife as you can see in the pictures does not have a love affair romance, she always looks pissed off at him.

I think Reggie was trading emails with ScarJo pretending to be Obama

Since the media declared that any company that has a racist comment anywhere at its site (and regardless of who wrote it) is itself racist, (we'll call this the 'Daily Kos rule'), I guess the Washington Post is racist. Stay classy.

1 in 10 Ohioans are on foodstamps,
and huge numbers of people working for our government have committed war crimes in the name of us and our nation.
But do tell what these oh so exciting emails were about...

This is what passes for news these days?
Hey Shailagh, I've seen 'newspapers' in the checkout line that are probably more suited to someone of your talents. Why don't you go work for one of them and let a grownup take your place here at the Post?

Media meddling 24/7, I believe that there is a certain percentage of people out there that are strong enuff to decern truth from hype and lies. If scarlett was ugly, there would be nothing said,,,at all.

Lay of the Obaminator. He doesn't give out his phone number and e-mail to just anybody. It's resevered for peeps like Tony Rezko, Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, Bill "boom-boom" Ayers and his lovely wife Bombadine Dohrn.

The piece was worth writing. The commentary by the Obama people is indicative of the ridiculous way they have of "analyzing" everything under a microscope so they can skew it towards race.
The fact about your candidate is that he throws everyone under the bus eventually because he uses people like he used the people in the Democratic party who consider themselves liberal.
FISA and denying public financing should give you a real good idea of what he is.
And the joke is you expect us to vote for him becasue he will stand by choice. Again your elevel of analysis is low.

"Didn't we see this tactic used on Harold Ford as he was running for the senate seat in TN recently???"
Yes, a dirty tactic but it was true. Everybody and their momma knew that Harold Ford was dating white women. He is now married to a white women. Why would a black man running for political office in a southern state not think this would become an issue?
Posted by: PTCruiser | June 25, 2008 6:44 PM
I really feel sorry for those of you brought up so racist and hateful, that truth in any shape or form upsets you. Maybe this is why other countries laugh at Americans. We only see our country now through the wicked eyes of the greedy!!! The terminology of "human beings" has become a means of showing how much some of you hate yourself, and blame the rest of the world... Really!!!
Shame on you, when any acts of kindness or gesture of decency becomes scandalous! Really feel sorry for a lot of you!

Obama's comment is not directed at Johansson. It is directed toward the media. I never interpreted Johansson's remarks to mean that she and Obama exchanged emails on a regular basis. This is all much ado about nothing at all.
Posted by: PTCruiser | June 25, 2008 6:35 PM
It's either that or Larry Johnson blogs that he has intercepted erotic e-mails or nude photos from their "scandalous affair."
Posted by: dorsey | June 25, 2008 6:18 PM
He was most likely using Reggie's email address when he responded to Scarlett's message, therefore she would NOT have his personal email adddress.
Posted by: Meredith | June 25, 2008 6:06 PM
Huff Post is becoming the left wing version of Fox news. I used to really enjoy it, but over the past 2 or 3 months it seems to be lowering its standards, and losing integrity. The titles of the pieces are just plain stupid, the pics (such as the one that linked to this article) are tabloid b.s., and their moderators will censor something not because of swear words, but because a comment might not sound liberal enough. A true progressive would be more concerned with staying in the middle and working to unite people, not further the divide. MSNBC is where it's at from now on.

Hold everything! Do I see a Clintonesque answer here? He says "I write saying, 'thank you Scarlett for doing what you do,' and suddenly we have this email relationship"
Notice there's no "?" after "we have this email relationship". The "?" would indicate that Obama was being sarcastic. Here, however, Obama is simply saying "suddenly we have this email relationship'--No SARCASM noted!
Posted by: jdmbamd2 | June 25, 2008 5:20 PM
Why doesn't Obama just admit that he's exchanged emails with Scarlett J? It doesn't make sense that Johannsen would simply dream up this email relationship. This denial raises yet more questions about his truthiness!
Posted by: jdmbamd2 | June 25, 2008 5:16 PM
Um and we all know Bush Sr. has a real email relationship with Reba McIntire, but that didn't make news like this, did it?
Posted by: Txgirl | June 25, 2008 5:07 PM
Your headline photo of Obama facing Johansson is a blatant racist stereotype and discredits HuffPost, not Obama.
You ought to be ashamed, especially since the facts and your story not only contradict the photo, but because it's downright nasty and serves no journalistic purpose.
Posted by: Quoth The | June 25, 2008 5:04 PM
you all are disgusting! our economy is in the toilet, we are at war and you are making up a story about a "snub" in a "relationship" that never happened. This country is changing and God willing the media will be changing along with it. Seems like it will be changing the hard way.

WAAAIIT a MINUTE!!! Obama says Johansson emailed his (70's former porn star) Reggie Love. Then Reggie forwarded the email to Obama. Then Obama DIRECTLY RESPONDED to Johansson. SO, Johansson DID have Obama's personal email! So NOW, we are led to believe that Johansson, having Obama's PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESS, decided to unilaterally end all further communication. NOT SO FAST, SENATOR!!!!

Hmm... A black man with a "relationship" w/ a beautiful white woman. Didn't we see this tactic used on Harold Ford as he was running for the senate seat in TN recently??? This was the Taboo card that was thrown out about 1 week before the election, and it was enough of an unsubstantiated stink to cause him to lose the senate seat race in a tightly contested race. Well, I guess it wouldn't get as much attention if Obama's e-mails were with Whoopi Goldberg or even Halle Berry huh? Nothing says "silly season" in politics like a racial taboo every once in a while huh? Then again, this may be a wash this election cycle - after all, didn't McCain father an illegitimate black baby some time ago??? (wink-wink!)

I have noticed too that the Texas mind set has narrowed to feeding on and parroting back the underground email smears over and over, never seeming to care that there is not a shred of corroboration anywhere, not by word, deed or video, as if it's Obama's fault about what his parents named him, Obama's fault that at age 5 he was exposed to non practicing Muslim father figures, and responsible for the state of the world. It would be laughable that by and large Texas has swallowed the smear propaganda, if it were not so pathetic. Intellect and reason has dropped to around the ankles in Texas.

Apparently most of you didn't bother to actually read the article. He didn't throw her under a bus and there is nothing wrong with thanking those that helped in the process. Obama is not a stupid man and to infer this is some kind of Bill Clinton zippergate issue is beyond silly.
Now how about some real debate on real issues?

The so-called mainstream media which has become so sleazy and ofcourse tabloid-like is trying to drive a wedge between Barack Obama and actress Scarlett Johanssen by blowing the relationship between them out of proportion. A politically driven relationship that is purely between a candidate and a supporter should'nt be made to look more than what it is. And Obama himself should'nt be drawn into making unflattering statements about Scarlett except to say that as much as he proud of the support from multitudes of Americans, he is proud of actress Scarlett support, period.

This must be linked on Drudge since there are so many republican posts here.
Or maybe they used The Google on the internets.
Living in Texas I hear a lot of Republicans talk about why they will not vote for Obama and it's always something other than a policy difference they have. Instead all you hear is distractions. like "He doesn't wear a flag pin". If McCain doesn't come out in a Flag 3 piece suit on the 4th of July then he's not Patriotic? Maybe he could paint the flag on his face too giving a speech where he leads us all in "USA USA USA". All these people that preach patriotism will be the same ones who come out and scream what an awful country this is for electing Obama.

The only sentence worth reading in this article is the comment that Obama made to a question on a debate, that it was "silly".
When will people start calling him, "Scaredy Cat, Scaredy Cat"? Getting whipped by Hillary in the debates they had, Obama won't trust himself to take on
McCain. If he is smart enough not to trust himself, why should anyone else trust him for anything? It amazes me to see his poll numbers! America sure has dumbed down.

Many many complaints about this story. You all realize you are on "The Trail" and you realize what "The Trail" is ? Quoting here - "A Daily Diary of Campaign 2008". Yep, that's all folks - a diary of what is happening on the campaign trail - little things, big things, stupid things, significant things - all so we (the readers) can get a flavor of what its like on the campaign trail. THATS ALL.
If you are expecting investigative journalism, go to the front page, not "The Trail".
And enough with the insults toward the reporters.

Indeed Obama has now called her a liar:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0608/10980.html
His replies have been thoughtful, she said, more than a brief line or two; on the ABC debate, he responded that the questioning was "difficult" and he was being pounded on "one silly question after another."
Johansson is somewhat shocked that he keeps up their back-and-forth correspondence. "You'd imagine that someone like the senator who is constantly traveling and constantly 'on' -- how can he return these personal e-mails?" she asks. "But he does, and in his off-time I know he also calls people who have donated the minimum to thank them. Nobody sees it, nobody talks about it, but it's incredible." She adds, "I feel like I'm supporting someone, and having a personal dialogue with them, and it's amazing."

Is the justice department only hiring conservatives?
IS the department of defense ensuring that the big companies get huge profits without oversight?
Is president Bush telling us tht we will make a push to get osama prior to him leaving office? (what have we been doing)
Do the ties that McCain has to Phil Gramm (enron loophole AND mortgage crisis)and Charlie Black (any dictator with money)cause concern for any voters?

I don't know who Shailagh Murray works for, but she needs to get a better working idea what "throwing under the bus" is about. Perhaps she could get a better sense of it if her employer - who is obviously wasting good money - unceremoniously canned her. THEN she'd get the concept of what "thrown under the bus" means.
I'd suggest Ms. Murray find new opportunities in the world of Real Estate, rather than the Fourth Estate.

Anyone wonder if she's got some justification for that attitude?

Are you serious? You guys got nothing more to report that this crap. Ok, Let's see we have a war, a financial crisis, trouble in Africa, and real estate crisis. And you are focusing on a stupid email without any proper evidence. WAY TO SHOW YOUR JOURNALISTIC SKILLS, WASHINGTON POST!!

what a stupid fact-less 'headline'...
Posted by: yo | June 25, 2008 2:45 PM
Okay, seriously, do you people have NOTHING BETTER to report on? Maybe, oh, I don't know, the two WARS that're going on? How about the latest Washington legislation? Or maybe the troubles in Zimbabwe and the Congo? No, you people are too busy trying to turn this into As The Election Turns. You sicken me.

Our wonderful investigative press - at it again. Dumbing down of America? No, it's the dumbing down of the press - and then it trickles down to those of us who think articles and subjects such as this are so very important because they affect our everyday lives. NOT.

The thing that is wrong with the headline is, HE DIDN'T THROW ANYONE UNDER THE BUS!
First off, Scarlett said he e-mailed her ONCE. Obama said he e-mailed her ONCE. That's IT. Nothing more, nothing less. How is that throwing someone under the bus?????
The media made this a big story, saying they have an "e-mail relationship". WHAT??? They would love nothing more than Obama to have his Monroe, oh wouldn't that be lovely? A hot young starlet and the next JFK? It sure would sell magazines and newspapers. In the end huffpo, you show you are just like the MSM, after nothing but profits.....

Are there any REAL journalists left over there? The American public is desperate for real news... not reporters looking for the next big scandal. Don't we have enough of those with the current administration? Couldn't ONE of you "reporters" maybe tell us about that stuff?

Posted by: RogerHWerner | June 25, 2008 2:27 PM
What the hell is wrong with that head line "OBAMA THROWS Scarlett Johansson UNDER THE BUS"?? it's suggesting that obama is dissing her, rejecting her. Basically Obama just clear things up so people dont get any ideas. Like another Monica Lewisnky. There is no damn Monica here folks!!!.... THIS MAN IS AS LOYAL AS THEY COME TO HIS WIFE. HE IS NOT BILL CLINTON.
Posted by: bostonkalloway | June 25, 2008 2:24 PM
Mi God...let's see. As of today, we know that the Bush CO refused to open an EPA doc calling for strict regs on greenhouse gases, that the DOJ discarded (for the first time ever) hubdreds of well-qualified applicants for the crime of being Dems, and that Major General Taguba says it is indisputable that the Bushies have engaged in "war crimes". Meanwhile, the FEC and the Congressional election committee are both investigating McCain for violating campaign finance laws. And what do we have here??? Whether or not Obama emailed Scarlett Johanssen back. Do those of you who write these items ever feel ashamed or are you too compromised and corrupted to remember that emotion?
Posted by: can the media sink any lower??? | June 25, 2008 2:23 PM
This is much ado about nothing.... again! Her brother actually works for the campaign and she may feel that she "knows" Barack through him. Barack barely has time to eat a waffle in peace for pity's sake. I sincerely doubt there is any there there. Huffingtonpost has to compete with Drudgereport for attention. Only thing is that we started to treat HP as a better and more newsworthy site compared to DR which normally makes up all the silly headlines. HP started to disappoint with the beating the Hillary to death band and now this shoddy piece of work that can be compared to Enquirer..get a life.

Posted by: slamkitty | June 25, 2008 2:20 PM
This is really more about how the media is infatuated with celebrities. I mean, what difference does this make; what is the point of this story? If it were some farmer in the Midwest emailing the campaign, would it be written up the Post? No, I didn't think so. Please stop being so starstruck guys, you're (supposed to be) professionals, not adolescent boys drooling over some hottie.

I concur with many people above. This is a joke of a "story". He did not "throw her under the bus", he is making a point of how the media distorts what people say. The person who put that headline up should start writing for fox news.

Regarding 'Chuckamok' and his comments about "Obama['s] record of reaching across the aisle is zero. ... Still ... may the best man win."
-- Chuckamok and his ilk ignore real news. There's a former Illinois State Congress colleague of Obama's, a Republican who was so impressed with the way Obama "reached across the aisle" to solve Illinois' problems, that this Republican starred in a primary endorsement supporting Obama. The real news is that McCain's group has now leaned on that Republican to disavow his campaign endorsement, but the Illinoisan said he felt he had to speak the truth, especially because we're so close to an epic breakthrough in egalitarianism, when our nation is so close to ignoring skin color in choosing an excellent person of intelligence and openmindedness, who will work with everyone who's got an honest solution, as we all put our shoulders to the wheel to push the US out of the Bush muck.
On the other hand, numerous media outlets during the primary ran articles about how McCain's explosive temperament made him prickly to work with at best, even for his US Senate Republican colleagues. And we've all seen his Bush-like approach to things, as for example in mouthing being for a tax credit to develop a battery but pushing hardest for the old-school war-and-drilling approaches. He's got an abysmal voting record, as noted by environmental groups.
Also, we can't trust that whatever reasonable impulses McCain had on issues years ago haven't been irreparably mutated as he's allowed himself to be hog-tied courtesy of the right-wing Republican party elements that got him annointed their candidate.
Yes, Obama is the best man for having a level-headed, open-door approach to mopping up our multiple messes -- war, energy, economy, international image, education (Obama was UofC's equivalent of a professor as Sr Lecturer), civil rights, you name it -- created by 7+ yrs of misguided NeoConism / religious rightism masquerading as political process and philosophy.
See you on the street corners while watched by as-close-to-a-dictator-as-we've-come President Bush's cameras, and talk to you on the phones while monitored by our President's cronies in the Telcos, as we all tear apart the fallacies presented by people such as Chuckamok and the inevitable Swift-Boaties.

Much ado about nothing. Obama is a great proven leader, we'll much better off with him as President than McCain and he's got my vote.
She's cool enough but no, I could give a crap who Scarlett emails.
The Obamas are one of the most decent married couples in public life and I am honored at the possibility of having a real, loving, youthful yet mature American family in the White House who actually behaves more the so-called "traditional Mommy-Daddy family" than anyone else has in my lifetime.
There'll always be 'extra folks' around attractive spouses like Michelle and Barack and they control what happens with their personal relationship.
After all these GOP homosexual trysts, Clinton's and Spitzer's shenanigans? I think more politicians will be smarter (or at least less dumb) about "extras."
This story's no bad reflection on anyone except the tired reporter who tried to make it more than it is.

Anyhow, she *is* being silly. But I don't think the Obama camp is worried about upsetting mainstream America in anyway that is us *projecting* our own insecurities and or long held beliefs.

That expression is a seriously tired now. Seriously, BHO saw what they did to Harold Ford in TN. Johansson has been flapping her mouth about Obama in all these magazines, so he needs to delete her music from his iPod and quash any remotely possible implication of any may-december sparkling intellectual empathy. Most Americans still get weird about a young white woman and black man in power in the same frame, even liberals. Its part of our historical DNA in this country.

I was looking through some other websites when I saw on the Huffington Post a blog entitled OBAMA THROWS SCARLETT JOHANSSON UNDER THE BUS, which lead me here to Washington Post. I don't see anything in Shailagh Murray's piece that indicated Scarlett was "thrown under the bus", but I read a few of the responses and came across the following:
******************************************
Add Scarlett Johanson to one of the many people that have been thrown under the bus. Doe anyone have a list? I know the last thing thrown under there was his "presidential" seal.
Posted by: jose | June 25, 2008 10:50 AM

My question is how is the response of someone maybe named "jose" responding to a Washington post blog make the headlines to another blog (i.e. on the Huffington post)?

Don't you understand that America is hated and disrespected around the world??
OF COURSE WE ARE GOING TO VOTE FOR HIM???
WHY DO YOU THINK ALL THE SANE POLITICAL LEADERS ARE BEHIND SENATOR OBAMA AS WELL?????

Posted by: jean | June 25, 2008 12:31 PM
Am guessing Barack was trying to chide the press for making a big deal (or any kind of a deal, really) out of the Scarlett Johansson e-mails, and did not intend to pour water on Scarlett's own enthusiasm. But it's true he can sometimes sound dismissive -- probably doesn't understand that most (male) reporters wouldn't be able to resist an opportunity to talk, think, write about Scarlett! Personally, I'd like a president who really doesn't know or care about the People Magazine side of life...
Posted by: MJ | June 25, 2008 12:29 PM
This story is so lame. Nothing wrong with having Johansson as an e-mail buddy. Johansson is someone who can really fire up the youth vote. But e-mail is so bad for election candidates because it's contents can go through so many routers and servers where the messages can be intercepted.

Posted by: majorteddy | June 25, 2008 12:19 PM
If you heard the racist skit that the Howard Stern crew did on this supposed email relationship the day this "story" broke, you'd see why Obama sees this story as a political liability and sees a need to address it in this way (though I imagine he was not the one to bring it up)--and it is a liability, as ridiculous as that seems.

His assistant probably saw the email and made it a priority to respond to it. I think "Every" 27 year old male would do the same thing.
Posted by: MC | June 25, 2008 12:03 PM
I wonder why he is being so defensive. Is he worried that someone might think he is a womanizer. Somehow me thinks he protests a little to much. So he wrote an e-mail to a celebrity. Since she is campaigning for him that would be a nice gesture but instead he is denying accepting her e-mails. Would he do that if it had been Tom Hanks. Tacky Tacky Tacky Guess you have to watch out for the old family man image. Wouldn't want someone to think we had another scandal brewing for the oval office now would we. Maybe she can join those Muslim girls that got the shaft.
Posted by: flcracker | June 25, 2008 11:43 AM
I can understand how during the primary, with Obama's and Clinton's positions on the issues not that different, that we would descend into this goofy focus on personality and image, although I didn't much like it. But now we have an actual campaign between two candidates with real differences in their positions on the issues, in their vision of the role of government, as well as their personal styles. Wouldn't it be great if we could talk about those differences rather than whose e-mails are being returned?

For those who don't like his 'character', that's fine, your choice, but if you are going to spew about it, at least support your positions with data instead of rumors. To Shailagh Murray...it is easy to see that you are enamored with Scarlett Johasson. To single out Scarlett is a simple futile attempt to "paint Obama/Johasson into a JFK/Marilyn Monroe role". There are many young hollywood Obama supporters as well as many young average American supporters.
The Obama haters are there like Oh Well, Chuckamok, and danielhancock, seek to trash by calling him names like "d*ckhead" and "boilerplate far-leftist" instead of talking about the issues in which they differ with Obama on.
This is why Obama will win in November, by staying focus on the issues that are important to our country.

And after the necessary trashing of the Pubs - his campaign can hardly avoid it - why would they be inclined to work with him?
He's just a typical politician. A capable speaker, yes, but a boilerplate far-leftist.

These are the things that Barack Obama likes to talk about because it keeps him away from having to talk about the issues.
If he had his way the rest of the campaign would be about how much slave blood he has, Reverend Wright, how funny his name sounds, attacks on his wife, real or imagined attacks on his race, and other matters not related to policy. It is easier to defend against these matters than it is to take specific stands on issues where he could be pinned down and lose votes

did You read my comments?? I said, there's no IMPROPRIETY in the emails., That doesn't mean that the politico rptr AND THE PRESS will use her to gin up rumors and gossip!! Did you see how Obama got slammed for these email exchanges on one show after another, (Leno, Cnn) even the loyal Keith O??? It's not the act, it's the PERCEPTION. She is after all, only 23. I thought I made it clear there was no there there, that the campaign and Obama were being nice to her to because she gets huge turnout and helps with fundraising. And there is nothing WRONG with that, but you know the world will try to find something in it. THAT'S WHAT I MEANT. I'm certainly NOT O's enemy, but I urge him and the campaign to use caution, it's innocent situations like these that can trip up a campaign and sidetrack their message.

P.S. not that I'm saying there's anything inappropriate in the emails probably just chit chat Reggie and the campaign encouraged as they giggled together plotting to use her..but the press will have a field day trying to parse whatever is there. It will be embarassing for Obama to have a private correspondence with anyone go public. Nobody likes to have their personal correspondence out there for the public to goggle. That's why I wouldn't want to be in the public eye.

That should have been a red flag to them in January to skedadlle-but no they wanted her robocalling and getting out the youth vote in Iowa so they placated her with faux email correspondences and now her bro works for the campaign!! She is indeed an asset-when she shows up the youth (male ) vote follows and the MONEY. But she's dangerous, and if I were the Obama people I'd run, not walk away from her.
I have a feeling we havent heard the last from that chick. She definitely has a crush on Obama. And now I'm wondering-who found out about the emails??? Were they mined by the Bush admin with this Fisa mining he's been doing???
be careful Obama. If you want to win, keep a friendly but safe distance from Hollywood people.
