Obama Sent Invitation from Ex-Ecuadorian Immigration Minister to Visit Ecuador

His brother and cousin are Marines. His sisters are college graduates, and his mother still lives in NY. Now the man, who illegally migrated to the United States, risking life, and limb to help achieve those American dreams, is inviting Presidential candidate Barack Obama to visit Ecuador to discuss immigration reform.

New York, NY - June 26, 2008 - William Murillo was only 18 years old when he sought legal entry into the "land of opportunity," but at the American Embassy in Ecuador, his visa and opportunity were denied. "I decided to go to the States in any way possible," says Murillo, and that is what he did. Nearly two decades later he is trying to bring increased attention to the immigration issue by inviting Senator Obama to Ecuador during his historic Presidential campaign.

"I want Senator Obama to experience first hand the human cost of current immigration policies. We are talking about human beings affected by the cruel realities of migration around the globe," says Murillo. His own journey lasted 39 days, "throughout the process I crossed several borders in Central America, I was being shot at while crossing borders, they abandoned us in the forest at our luck. I walked, I swung, I ran, I escaped regular and immigration police, with my cousin and 2 friends." Once arriving in New York City, Murillo lived in the shadows for 14 years, working low paying jobs and constantly fearing deportation until finally his hard work paid off. After working as Founder/ Director of Campaign for Alianza Pais in the US, to get Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa Delgado elected, he became the Ecuador's first and youngest Immigration Minister, at 33.

In a letter that could be only be described as tragic, resilient, and triumphant, Murillo encourages Senator Obama to "visit the humble houses of migrant families," and to "receive letters from children addressing to their parents living in other countries." Murillo believes that Obama's visit would help on two fronts; first, it would offer inspiration to those in Latin America whose countries are not providing opportunity thus driving away hard working citizens. Secondly, it could "send a loud and clear message to the Latino voters in the United States that Obama is the man for the job."

Immigration has long been a sensitive issue in the world, and has become "white-hot" during these tough economic times in the U.S and Europe. Having Obama visit "the heart" of Latin America during a Presidential Campaign would not only be historic, but Murillo hopes it will be beneficial. "His visit could help fuel a renewed vision in Latin America and around the globe that focuses on peace and integration, rather than wars and borders." Murillo believes that Obama's "change and hope theme" is so relevant in Ecuador and Latin America, that he will open up an office to support Senator Obama's campaign from Ecuador with volunteers in Quito, the capital of Ecuador.

"While Mr. McCain will visit Colombia and support the war on drugs, I'm inviting Mr. Obama to visit Ecuador and support peace, while McCain will give more money for guns and military spending, I'm inviting Mr. Obama to support the immigrant families and talk about the future of his immigration reform," mentioned Murillo. "The decisions made by the next president of the US, will have a direct impact on the lives of millions of my fellow Ecuadorian citizens, not just in Ecuador, but in Latin America and around the world." " The wave of leftist leaders taking power in Latin America is not coincidental, it responds to the lack of opportunities in our lands, and if we don't do something about it between government and civil organizations, the end result will inevitably be more migration, either legal or illegally," Murillo concluded.

"It is possible for Ecuadorians to build our own destiny, I remember the days when my first job was washing cars in the winter in New York, then I went to "better job" washing dishes, then I cleaned bathrooms. After that I went to clean yards and became a gardener and landscaper, then to a factory and to several other jobs, finally end up as Immigration Minister of my country," explains Murillo. I believe the Ecuadorian dream is also possible with hard work, dedication and hope in the future, just as Mr. Obama is preaching in the States."

Sure the John McCain's and Ted Kennedy's immigration bill was a bad plan and it was justifiably defeated.

Among other things, it called for undocumented workers to come forward pay a fine and return to the native country and apply for admission to the U.S. Basically the bill called for them to risk all on an application that may or may not be approved. Say what you want about illegal immigrants but they are not stupid.

This plan would have failed and it would have been back to the status quo. Maybe that was the intent.

That being said, it appears from the article that Obama other than criticizing McCain for walking away from the issue said nothing other than using the buzz word, "border security." What is McCain supposed to do, contunue to advocate a plan which has been repudiated? Why should he particularly when Obama will just stay and the background and offer nothing specific other than criticism of McCain?

During the campaign Obama has said little on this issue other than the awkward moment during a debate when the Democratic candidates were asked about granting drivers licenses to undocumented workers. Even at that, he basically critized Hillary Clinton for giving a wishy-washy answer. But later when Obama and John Edwards were asked the same question, they both gave similarly evasive answers.

Is this what the campaign is going to be? Is it just going to be Obama criticizing McCain but not offering anything specific of his own? It sounds a lot like old style politics rather than the politics of change.

Hispanic leaders such as Dolores Huerta co-founder of "United Farmworkers of America" sought help from Senator Obama to help out Ms Arellano. Yet he failed to even return her calls. And he has the audacity to accuse McCain of abandoning Hispanics?

I wish people would stop throwing the word "amnesty" around so ignorantly! Comprehensive immigration reform is necessary in this country because the current situation calls for it. Recongnize that illegal immigrants in this country come from all over the world, and that the figure includes millions of people who came into this country legally but have fallen or been forced out of status under the current immigration law. All the bills that have been presented and debated have very strict guidelines for these illegal immigrants to earn the right to even apply for citizenship - and it's been said time and time again that they will have to go to the back of the line and pay fines. That does NOT sound like a free pass to me.

More than that, is anyone concerned with the flaws in the existing system for legal immigrants? In fact, I agree with the sentiment earlier that the current system is set up for upper middle-class and wealthy people to travel and relocate to the United States. But that's not what this nation was built on! It was built on the toil and sweat of hard working men and women who had ideals of freedom and a desire to provide for their families needs. While I don't condone jumping fences, I understand that only horrible desperation would lead most people to do it. It's against the law, and they should pay, but it's so wrong to brand them all as dangerous criminals when so many of them just want to feed their families! And sure there are criminals among them. There are criminals in every society and among every demographic of people everywhere!!

Still, it would be interesting to see the choices some of our good, hardworking American men and women (who're crying Amnesty)would make if they were wearing someone else's muddy shoes on the other side of the boarder dealing with the circumstances and facing the choices that many illegal immigrants have.

It's sad that this country is so easily motivated by fear. Right from the way we bring up our children to the basis on which we cast our votes... And it's fear devoid of empathy and open-mindedness. What kind of a society is this? Have critics of proposed comprehensive immigration reform actually researched the issue and tried to understand it - beyond just feeding their own biases and opinions?

But to be fair, I wonder if anyone even has a plan - a logical and workable plan - as to how these immigrants would be found and deported. Where would the manpower and the money come from? What sort of time frame would you suggest? Unless of course all those crying "Amnesty!" are planning to seal up the borders nice and tight and then leave everything else as is... coz sure! We can see how that's a much better solution to the entire immigration problem...

Oh - I have an idea!! Maybe if we turn off all the lights, all the immigrants in the shadows will just glow in the dark!!

What is truly sad is the rule of law is not being followed. Yes we are talking about people, families and millions of them. But the fact is, it is illegal to enter the US with out going threw immigration.

This is NOT a cultural or racical issue. It is true that in boarder states large numbers of people have broken the law entering the united states from certain counties. But that is the point... large numbers of people are entering the country BREAKING THE LAW.

Some people take issue with calling these people criminals, but if you break the law... you are a criminal. The law is there for a reason. If you don't like it (and you are a citizen) try to get it changed. LOL good luck, the rest of this counrty is not going to support open unrestricted immagration into the country.

For the illegals and their supporters who say I'm not a criminal, or I have been here 10 years and I don't break the law. Actually you do. ENTERING the country without going threw the proper channels is illegal and makes you a criminal. Aiding and abetting illegals is a crime. seeking employment under false pretense is a crime. Working under the table (not paying taxes) is a crime.

Illegal's have not just broken one law, but continue to breaking the law daily by evasion of cature, evasion of taxes, aiding others, to name a few.

Although it is important to note that a number of high profile cases exsist in Cali, Texas, and Arizona, that are high profile due to the Illegal person involved in a violent crime.

I do not support amnesty, nor a path to citizens for illegals already here. It is pandering to even speak it, and rewarding criminal activity. There is already a method to appy for citizenship to this country... In your home country, appy to enter ours.... it takes time not its LEGAL, and then you truly have the opertunity to experience the US.

Lastly to those who say, they do jobs americans won't do... BULL. Americans have Farmed, Worked in fast food, worked in construction, worked in lawn care, worked as plumbers, electricains, contractors, factory workers, janitors, and every other blue collor job that is being taken by illegals working for slave wages. American's wont work for 2 dollars an hour.... and illegals won't if made citizens either. CAN YOU SAY MINIMUM WAGE.

The proble sits with the employers who employe illegals. I call fro the mass reporting of illegal employment, get the companies fined, they will comply and offer the jobs to citizens at real wages or they will be shut down.

There is a method. People should *go home to their country of citizenship* and apply to become guest workers. The then can apply, after some years, for citizenship.

The illegals should be at the back of the guest worker application line, behind the law abiding people who not only want to be here but have the decency to respect the law. Otherwise the American ideals of equality and justice will have been violated.

And the guest worker program should contain a special payroll deduction tax, like social security, to pay for border security and the enforcement programs. And enforcement of the laws of this country should become stricter over time.

We shouldn't deport 12-20 million people. But we should create the environment where they want to leave and get right by the law. And their countrymen who have had the grace and dignity to respect our laws should be first in line.

Welfare reform changed behavior by putting a five year window and a strict environment in place. Many people said it couldn't work. It did. Immigration reform needs to happen. And it needs to happen now.

No to amnesty. No to special treatment for criminals. They shouldn't be punished, but there is no way that they should be rewarded either; they go to the back of the line.

Senator Kerry will be out of a job soon. He will be replaced by another Democratic Senator.

Most Americans have no problem with immigrants, of any race, who are here legally. But people who are here illegally are going to have to go home and wait in line, behind the law-abiding citizens who have the grace and decency to respect America and her laws. Those are the people we want here. Not ignorant, arrogant jerks who think they should be able to get away with anything.

Understand this about America. The politicians will not get elected if they do not follow the will of the people. And too many illegal immigrants have been gang-banging, and too many illegals have failed to make *any attempt* to learn the English language.

Do you think illegals can work in some shadow economy, not pay taxes, and just get free health care and services. Do you think Americans will put up with that?

Brother, you haven't thought it through. People are already going back home because they can't get driver's licenses, can't get work, and are starting to feel the heat. There was a time Romans persecuted christians for taking higher path. Today's illegals are same. They do the most scariest, dirtiest and low paying job and work so hard only to be made scapegoat for whether it be the rise in crime, or job loss due to globalizations, or to rally pinheads or raise a populist sentiment. This whole line of campaigning lacks a grasp of reality.

Bush was able to get 40% of the latin vote in 2k4 because he and his brother (who married a latina) controlled Texas and Florida. The Bush people don't like McCain, as is evidenced by the 2000 campaign when McCain put the coke thing around, and they aren't about to go to the mat for him in this election.

Obama is going to win 65+% of the latin vote. And McCain is going to depress his conservative base and their turnout by making the immigration/amnesty play.

McCain's mother must have loved him a lot. I guess he feels that he can get in front of any crowd, however small, and work his 'magic'.

That McCain is playing this losing hand is indicative of the fact that he needs to get a grip. Otherwise Obama is going to smoke him. More fuzzy thinking like this and Texas is in play.

Obama has sought support from Hispanic voters with respect and genuine concern for their rights and culture. His efforts in Nevada and throughout the country were not interpreted by Latinos as you claim.

His genuine concern for all people and especially those who do not have a strong voice in Washington has been recognized by Latino populations in all the states you list.

Further, the voters of Florida will have their say on November 4th. You whine about Florida - why? Because Hillary did not get what she wanted? Obama was missing in action during the fight over comprehensive immigration reform. He showed up for the photo op when a compromise was reached, but never took part in any of the deliberations on the compromise, then voted for a handful of killer amendments that ultimately sunk the legislation. He's a phony. McCain, on the other hand, agree or disagree with him, took a leadership role. Now all the yahoos out there can scream amnesty all they want, the fact is we need workers at both the high and low ends of the skills spectrum. We spend too much money educating Americans to want them picking tomatoes or processing poultry. We can either decide to ship those jobs south of the border or admit hard-working people who want those jobs. In fact, with the death of immigration reform, American agricultural businesses are now leasing land in Mexico to grow lettuce and tomatoes they once grew in places like California. McCain could take a serious lead if he chose to take a stand on arrest the employers, close the border. The polls show 70+ percent of voters want that and it's been a STEADY 70+ percent.

McCain and Republicans offer very little for Latinos or other people here in the area of health care. They frankly do not care about expanding health care coverage to the forty-seven million plus persons who do not have any health care plans.

McCain wants to continue the war and occupation in Iraq indefinitely, I do not understand how his policies there would help Latinos or any other people living in this country. In fact, continuing the war will hinder Latinos and other people by squandering tens of billions each year, which could otherwise be spent on improving health care, education and public safety, benefitting all persons in the United States.

Several conservative research groups and blogs are reporting the stunning news that all previous estimates of the number of illegal aliens in our country are way short of the true total - which may be as high as 90 million from Central America alone.

Add to that total the number of latinos from South America and the Carribean and it is possible that the grand total exceeds 95 million right now in 2008.
