Obama Hits Back at Questions About His Patriotism

Barack Obama, U.S. senator from Illinois and Democratic presidential candidate, speaks at the Truman Memorial Building in Independence, Mo., June 30, 2008. (Bloomberg News)

By Jonathan Weisman
INDEPENDENCE, MO. -- Dogged by persistent questions about his faith in God and country, Sen. Barack Obama today journeyed to Harry Truman's birthplace to lay out his vision of patriotism, conceding that he has learned in this campaign "the question of who is -- or is not -- a patriot all too often poisons our political debate."
"Throughout my life, I have always taken my deep and abiding love for this country as a given, " Obama said. "It was how I was raised. It was what propelled me into public service. It it why I am running for president. And yet at times over the last 16 months, my patriotism [has been] challenged - at times as a result of my own carelessness, more often as a result of the desire by some to score political points and raise fears about who I am and what I stand for."
The address, at the Truman Memorial Building here, was an extraordinary one for a presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party just four months before election day. Obama has built his candidacy on the promise of change in a political year when the vast majority of Americans feel their nation is on the wrong track. But he has found himself tripping over one of the lowest hurdles a politician faces, the issue of his patriotism.
False assertions have persistently circulated online, claiming incorrectly that Obama will not recite the Pledge of Allegiance, place his hand on his heart for the national anthem or wear an American flag pin on his lapel.
The Obama campaign this month erected a website, Fight The Smears, to combat these false claims about him, even posting videos of the senator from Illinois leading the Pledge of Allegiance as he opened a Senate session. But in some circles -- and especially among the white, working-class voters he has had the most difficulty with -- the beliefs have become ingrained, egged on by Internet videos such as one that pans over Democratic presidential candidates in Iowa with their hands over their hearts during the national anthem. In the video, Obama has his hands crossed in front of him. Another shows Obama's wife, Michelle, saying that for the first time, she is proud of her country.
Obama tried to take the offensive today, proclaiming that he "will not stand idly by" as his patriotism is questioned.
His speech put the issue in a sweeping historical perspective, speaking of charges that Thomas Jefferson had sold the nation out to the French and that John Adams was in cahoots with the British. He also questioned policies enacted in the name of patriotism, from Adams' Alien and Sedition Act, Abraham Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus and Franklin Delano Roosevelt's internment of Japanese Americans.
"The use of patriotism as a political sword or a political shield is as old as the Republic," Obama said. "Still, what is striking about today's patriotism debate is the degree to which it remains rooted in the culture wars of the 1960s -- in arguments that go back 40 years or more. In the early years of the civil rights movement and opposition to the Vietnam War, defenders of the status quo often accused anybody who questioned the wisdom of government policies of being unpatriotic."
Obama was quick to add that the civil rights and anti-war protesters did their part to bring those charges on -- and to make them stick, "by burning flags, by blaming America for all that was wrong with the world, and perhaps most tragically, by failing to honor those veterans coming home from Vietnam, something that remains a national shame to this day."
Obama tried to situate the issue of patriotism in his own, unusual biography, which took a child from Hawaii to Indonesia, from a home headed by a single mother to one led by grandparents, with both parents at times absent.
"For a young man of mixed race, without even a father's steadying hand, it is this essential American idea -- that we are not constrained by the accident of birth but can make of our lives what we will -- that has defined my life, just as it has defined the life of so many other Americans," he said. "That is why for me, patriotism is always more than just loyalty to a place on a map or a certain kind of people. Instead, it's also loyalty to America's ideals, ideals for which anyone can sacrifice, or defend, or give their last full measure of devotion."
When controversy exploded over the fiery sermons of his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama showed he could help defuse a political threat when he challenges it head on. His speech on race in Philadelphia in March was hailed for its candor and eloquence, and in the days that followed it, he quickly moved back to the central themes of the primary campaign, the economy and Iraq.
This time, campaign aides say, Obama will stick with the theme of patriotism through the July 4 week, when he travels to conservative leaning regions of western Ohio and the Mountain West.
"I give him credit. He is taking this very seriously," said presidential historian Robert Dallek, who compared Obama's travails to those of John F. Kennedy, which was plagued by whisper campaigns about the divided loyalties of the would-be first Catholic president.
Those anti-Catholic whispers were a real threat to Kennedy, Dallek said, but they were not abetted by the stubborn, unruly Internet, nor were they stoked by the undercurrent of racial suspicion that Obama faces.
Kennedy went on the offensive in 1960, charging that his Republican opponent, then-Vice President Richard M. Nixon, had been weak on Cuba and had allowed a "missile gap" to develop with the Soviet Union.
Democrats appeared to be taking a page from the Kennedy play book. Over the weekend, Gen. (Ret.) Wesley Clark questioned whether presumptive Republican nominee John McCain's record as a fighter pilot and Vietnam prisoner of war really were qualifications to be commander-in-chief. Clark's comments echoed a similar jab by Sen. John. D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.V.), and it triggered a fierce response by the McCain campaign and an effort to put some distance
McCain put up his own website to counter questions over his military service.
Obama added his personal support for McCain's efforts, acknowledging McCain and other wounded veterans, "who have endured physical torment in service to our country."
"No further proof of such sacrifice is necessary," Obama said. "And let me also add that no one should ever devalue that service, especially for the sake of a political campaign, and that goes for supporters on both sides."
Obama's speech was first planned for this spring, when the rumors began to gain ground. At the suggestion of former senator Bill Bradley, Obama had hoped to deliver it in Gettysburg, Pa., a wrenching site for such an address from the first African American nominee of a major party. But the Wright controversy supplanted patriotism with race as Obama's primary concern, and the speech was postponed.
The Obama campaign today denied having had such plans.
After Obama took a private tour of Harry Truman's turn-of-the-century, white Victorian home, he ruminated on his choice of Independence for his speech.
"Not only Truman but Mark Twain embodied a lot of the wisdom of the Midwest," Obama told reporters outside the house. "And so when you think about the Fourth of July, for me at least, I think about the spirit that is this place.... It's a place where there's not a lot of pretense or fuss or trying to use patriotism in ways that divide us. So I thought it was an appropriate setting."

Amazing how Repubs keep trying to frame Obama as someone just as dirty as them. Sorry folks, it just isn't true!

Obama has learned much from Karl Rove. All that we have done is to substitute Obama for Bush and the Obama supporters for the religious right. It doesn't do this democracy any good to have Obama send envoys abroad to ensure foreign governments that all of rhetoric is just political posturing. If you frame Barack's rhetoric in those terms, you get the measure of the man. BTW, I wish the MSM would stop it with the Landmark speech crap. Nothing changed except, it gave the press an excuse to spread Obama propaganda while simultaneously side-stepping the issue.

I work hard for my family. I hardly spent that much time with my kids because of work and responsibilities of being an adult. What I think when I read your articles is how stupid are you? Or maybe how can I get a ticket to live in your fantasy land for a while and leave reality behind? It has been a long time since this country has had good candidates for presidents and this year is not offering much better. I am tired of being racist because I am white. I am tired of paying for other people to be on welfare and much less those that are not even legal to live here. I am tired of giving money away when we are so far in debt.
How about we secure our borders first? Then when we stop the wave of millions pouring in we can focus on fixing the inside. Let's make sure that our elders have money for medications and food. Anyone who has served their country deserves the next level of giveaways. Then the sick and the poor. You should not get more of anything for having more babies. 0. It should all be on a time line. My grandparents worked hard or went to bed hungry.
IRS serves no purpose. The federal government should only be for the protection of this country. State laws should out rule federal unless it is matter of national security.
I am tempted to open a cash business and stop participating in the great American give away.
Remember that all of your politicians were bought and paid for by big oil and drug companies.
Don't vote - send that message.

Republicans,
If you folks don't wish to get serious and cease from these myriad of distractions, you will, in fact, "dig your own grave."
Your party, and what is left of a once greater nation, has been driven into the "ditch."
THINK DAMN IT!
If there was ANYTHING in Baracks background that could be found objectionable (in the least), do you actually believe the CIA, the FBI and the Secret Service would withhold that kind of information? Hell, even Bill Clinton would sabotage him if there were!
Republicans really have no one to turn to; you are conducting yourselves as a lost party and your fear tactics have all been witnessed in past elections.
A handful of you admit that because he is in bi-racial skin, you can not vote for him. While I remind you that is not HIS fault I will also state the your forthrightness, I appreciate. All of this other "crap" you folk are attempting to sell has become old, stale, rotten and no one is buying it.
If you are racist, say so, and be done with it! In the end, you will simply confirm that the Republican party is where you folks are.
No matter how racist you are, this is America where you have a right to stand for who and what you are.
I can defend that; unlike most of you, I already have.

Wow. There is so much unfounded hate here.
Why hate Obama or McCain? Both guys are trying to help their country.
If you feel McCain's economic policy is better, tell us why! That's a lot more helpful.
If you feel his policies are not going to work, tell us which policies, and why!
But here's a hint: 'because he's old', 'because he's a Muslim', or the like don't explain anything.
Try something like "McCain's plans to attack earmarks will help the economy by reducing government spending drastically without handicapping our war efforts. He already has a background of passing this type of legislation. Just reference the campaign finance reform bill."
Or perhaps "Barack Obama has a vision for Washington and for the country which we feel he can carry out. His ability to lead men and women is clear. His ability to build coalitions and inspire people will lead to a new era of involvement from the masses and resume the American marketplace of ideas."
Just examples and my idea of debate that helps. Please people, there's really no reason for all the hate.

CP Cook wrote: "Let's be honest here, it will not be Obama who will get us out of the economic mess we are in. Like it or not, McCain's economic positions are more reasonable. More government intervention, bail-outs and additional taxes will only put us deeper into the recession."
Let's be honest, I agree: you are a Republican talking the same old nonsense that the Republicans and Bush have been selling and pushing onto us for the last 8 years. Let's be honest, it is not working. Let's be honest, we have had enough of these type of economic policies that make the Exxons and Enrons ultra-rich while treating the rest of us like a bag of dirt. Let's be honest: it is these policies that have got us into the mess we are in today. Let's be honest, Obama's economic policies will bring us back to the golden years that we enjoyed during Clinton's presidency which guys like you started out by saying "Don't blame me: I voted for Bush", but then later changed your story to "Clinton got lucky to inherent all the rewards that were set up by Bush economics." Let's be honest, America is not dumb enough to see through this crap and the same old crap you guys are trying to sell. Yes, I agree, honesty is the best policy. Goodbye CP Cook and McCain and the Republican party, your reign on top of American politics is over and gone. America has had enough and we are just not dumb enough to fall for more of the same.

To SteveCO...
We may disagree with McCain's positions, but we should also remember that at least McCain has a track record. Comapare this with Obama's record, and we should be glad at least McCain is proviing us with a real choice in this election. I don't know about you, but I am not an ideologue (although I trend Democratic). Having said that, to vote for Obama is to vote to another Bush (although now, he is a Democrat!). To vote for an ultra-liberal like Obama with the Dems controlling Congress is like going back to the time when Republicans control everthing. What we now consider as Bush's failures are exactly those that Democrats voted along with. Except for the last vote, Obama voted for Iraq funding. Talk about having political gall! Let's be honest here, it will not be Obama who will get us out of the economic mess we are in. Like it or not, McCain's economic positions are more reasonable. More government intervention, bail-outs and additional taxes will only put us deeper into the recession. Furthermore, what Obama is bringing is economic class warfare. We are all in this together, and once one class of people is pitted against the other will only make everybody worse.
Now about you wrote "I find zero heroism in a man who votes to bankrupt America with hundreds of billions for oil companies, over a *trillion* dollars spent on a war in Iraq started and maintained by sheer lies - yet this same old geezer can vote against health care for poor children in *this* country." This might as well be Obama's speech.... all talk, zero substance. If you want to discuss thngs, discuss but please spare the rest of humanity with empty slogans. BTW, again, I am a Democrat, but empty slogans is one among the big reasons why I can't in good conscience vote for Obama. I would rather cast my lot with somebody who has a sound plan, and has taken positions and acted on issues.

Bush seems to think that all of his sins of racism and double standards are excused by so-called "compassionate" conservatism in developing regions.
Because of Bush, many people do not have equal opportunities to employment- and are treated disparately with blatant discirmination.
The discrimination laws serve white people and not the victims of discrimination.
People are unfairly and dishonestly maligned because of the Bush administration.
Yet Bush spends more money to fight AIDS in Africa, than he spends for domestic problems in brown and white communities here in the US
This is the same type of compassionate conservatism that the adventist and catholic churches practice.
It's a form of neocolonialism for sure.
Why is it htat some of the recipients of this AID often harbor some of the same prejudices and stereotypes as their American benefactors?
Sort of like the Adventists from Southern Africa who called non-whites - "wenches", etc.
It's a kind of neocolonialism and spread of poison in my view.

The question of whether Obama is presidential material is not about patriotism it is about policy. Senator Obama spoke here in Reno, NV at UNR and said, "America can not ask other nations to lay down or fore go their missiles and missile development unless we do so first."
He uses the same syllogism often as in his, "How can we ask other nations to reduce carbon emissions when we drive around in our SUVs in America and buy whatever we want" (I am paraphrasing two of his quotes)
A President Obama can make a mistake or two regarding carbon emissions and he may ruin our economic advantage but we will survive as a nation. However if a President Obama lays down our missiles and eliminates our new successful missile defense system, which Obama often has said he will defund, then we may find ourselves speaking Chinese in the near future.
Hitler would have loved a Prime Minister Obama instead of the Winston Churchill he got.
As Churchill said , "Any man who is under 30 and is not a liberal has no heart but any man who is over 30 and is not a conservative has no head."
Judging from his policy pronouncements Barak Obama is still in his political adolescence.
America can not afford to have him at the helm of our ship of state until he matures.

Part of the reason we use so much energy is we are the world's biggest economy. We take in raw materials and put out finished products like medicine, food, appliances, computers and electronics, automobiles, plastics, ships, planes, etc., that the rest of the world buys from us, or that we give away.
My Comment:
In a number of those areas, not really. Take a look, for example, where all of those parts of your computers are made. How many High Def TV's, DVD Recorders, Computer Monitors, or other consumer electronics are made in the US? America is simply not the "engine of production" anymore.

I don't even get stressed about any of this moronic crap anymore because I know Obama is going to win the November election at least 55% to 45%, and maybe more. So the morons will have to flounder on the sidelines for at least the next eight years. And probably longer, because with the Shrub leaving office as the least popular President ever in America, the Republicans are lucky if they elect another GOP President before 2020.

American voters do not believe that Obama can walk the walk and talk the talk. we believe that he is selling us a bill of goods.
Obama is more like a used car salesman.
Obama sells the idea that he was raised by his grandparents neglecting to mention that they were rich and he went to the best private college prep schools while Obama's mother was on food stamps.
Obama refused to go to his own mother's funeral.
When asked who Americans would want to carry the American flag during the Olympic ceremony. Voters said they would want John McCain to hold the flag at the Olympics.
McCain is the true American hero. Obama is a fake used car salesman who makes it seem like we are all racist if we do not vote for him.

Many former Presidents have been Senators and Governors. I can't see too many who had a military back-ground. I don't think it is essential to have military experience to be a President. A pure civilian may be able to get us out of the 'war' mind-set and do business as usual to repair the leaks and the holes on our bridges and our streets.
Compared to new ramparts of Singapore or Shanghai or many other 'high growth' ,'hi tech' centers of the world, the United States, the "icon" has started looking old and wrinkled. We need our money to be spent right here to make us 'state-of-the-art' and claim back our place as 'numero uno' after the great slide back over the last 8 years. That is the kind of leadership we are looking for. Judicious application, true professionalism, high energy, commitment, zeal and true leadership qualities, with youth and verve. By the need of the hour, we need to steer away from military and sabre-rattling. Move on, America, time to move on and not to be rivetted in the 20th century mind-set. Let not pity and attachment to the past colour your vision and make you look through a prism. See sigma, hear six-sigma, feel six-sigma, go for it! Be a savvy investor. From now on, do it right, the first time, every time.
Ring out the old, ring in the new.

People who question his patriotism are morons.
The list of blatant flaws in their reasoning is so vast and pathetic as to make it obviously a waste of time to debate with them.
It should be obvious to even the most undereducated that a person running for president is exceptionally patriotic. It doesn't matter what party they're in either.

Which Presidential Candidate Pays His Female Employees Better?
Monday, June 30, 2008
By Brit Hume
E-Mail Print Share:
Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:
Money Talks
Barack Obama has vowed to make equal pay for women a priority if elected president and even told supporters in New Mexico last week, "McCain is an honorable man... but when you look at our records and our plans on issues that matter to working women, the choice could not be clearer. It starts with equal pay."
But Cybercast News cites a report from the secretary of the Senate which says women working in Obama's Senate office were paid, on average, about $6,000 less than men. And, of the five people in Obama's office who earn more than $100,000 a year, only one is a woman.
But in John McCain's Senate office, the average pay for women is $2,500 more than men.

Good goobidy go! I spent almost 2 hours reading this crap, and when I refreshed the page, there were 100 more posts from hell.
I really don't know why the hate. People don't find the facts out for themselves...they believe the crap they want to believe, and disregard the items that don't agree with what they want to hear. Sad really.
The current administration has destroyed the country. They have borrowed so much money, run up the national debt, started a war, (and yes, we did start a war in Iraq. There was no connection to the 9/11 attacks) shredded the constitution, lied, cheated the American people out of billions of dollars in no-bid contracts to their cronies, and have turned the USA into a laughing stock.
Is Obama the seconding coming? Hell no! Does he represent a huge change? Yes. Do I agree with all his positions? No. But I do agree with his more than I agree with McCain's. If McCain was still a so called "Maverick," I might consider him, but he isn't. He has "towed the company line."
I am not really happy about Obama's change of heart on the whole FISA thing, but he is trying to find some middle ground. Personally, I wish the Democrats would throw the book at the Republican administration....But that is just going to prolong the pain that we have already experienced.
Someone tell me this...
How are we going to pay this astronomical debt that we have accrued? Tax cuts? Cutting services? We are going to be paying for this administration's debacle for a long, long time. Taxes. And when you get hit with them, don't blame the Democrats. George W. Bush and company did it.
I just want someone to talk about something that's relevant. This conversation makes no sense.

I do not believe that Obama's views are any more than just moderate.
Unfortunately, this is not borne out by his "most liberal" voting record as ranked by numerous left-leaning organizations who currently support him.
McCain does need the support of the right, who have been even less than lukewarm to him because of his history of co-sponsoring legislation with a number of Democrats.
McCain-Feingold...McCain-Kennedy and McCain-Leiberman sponsored legislation on the books still irks them, but Obama is so far left, McCain to them looks like Reagan in comparison.

I'm listening to the talking heads on MSNBC now. They do not get it. Gen. Clark never dissed McCain. McCain's particular military service is not a qualification for him being President. If it is, then any military guy who was flying a plane and was shot down has a leg up on qualifications for being President.
May I ask if flying a plane and being shot down are qualifications for President? I flew military planes during the same time period. I was fortunate not to have been shot down. The U.S. Constitution does not say so. If it does, please find it.
People may point to a past biography to support a run for the President. However, there are very few qualifications written into the U.S. Constitution. The founders of our country were not fools. Otherwise, we would have one military leader after another as President. We are close to a military state now. The President keeps saying that he will do what the generals want in Iraq. Sounds like a real Commander-in-Chief, doesn't it. Right or wrong, Truman was a Commander-in-Chief. He knew how to make the tough decisions.

1. Please propose how you plan to pay off the national debt, a whopping 8 trillion of it run-up by Republican presidents since 1980. Remember when Ronald Reagan called the debt assinine when he then signed the bill to raise the debt limit to one million dollars.
Grow the ecomony, do not overtax those who produce the wealth of America. Promote productivity, innovation and incentivize production of new energy sources. Think outside the box and allow American ingenuity solve our current energy crisis. More taxes willconly curtail innovation, exploration and development and prolong our pain.
2. I do not know about you, but did you know that my tax bill suffered the largest increase ever after the passage of the "tax neutral" 1986 tax bill? Another case where middle-class America saw its taxes being redistributed to the wealthiest top 5% of the American population. Nothing changes with the Repubican crew who always screams out tax and spend against Democrats. The Republicans borrow and spin.
No one predicted 9/11 or our nation's necessary response. Whether you agree or not with the national defense expenditures which both parties approved, our sons and daughters who were sent into harm's way deserve our support at ANY cost. Some things are priceless. They are to me.
3. You obviously haven't heard Obama to tell his audiences that to move forward, it must be the people working with their elected government, that government cannot do everything. Have you heard this?
He says a lot of things to different audiences. I do not believe the rhetoric of a half-term senator is Gospel. His voting record, such as it is, in the senate tell a totally different tale.
4. I say after trying the extreme right agenda for 8 years, isn't it a good time for the other side to have a turn on the other side of the seesaw to balance things out? Stop crying wolf. It is time that balance be brought back to the Federal government. The Republicans, the party that detests government and pretty near ruined it, should kindly bow out so that some progressive Democrats can get this country moving again.
I believe candidates should be voted on individually, just as Obama is no Kennedy, McCain is no Bush. McCain has a record of being an American first above any party. He has proved this with a long record of bi-partisanship that few can match.
5. Is it possible that there is no such thing as being too far right?
When zealots go extreme right or left, they are usually meet and join in facist/socialist territory.

Regarding Wesley Clark's interview, he is totally correct. John McCain responded without total knowledge of the entire interview. If McCain can jump on this interview this way, it just shows that he is following in the Bush tradition of jump before looking closely at the facts. Seems like the biggest jump was the jump to go to war in Iraq. Look where it got us: (1)over 4000 troops dead, (2) untold numbers of American civilians dead, (3) over 500 billion dollars in borrowed war debt marching to 3 trillion by the time all equipment is replaced, and (4) the bottom of the credibility and influence barrel in the world, we have lost our moral standing in the world.
Seems like John and his minions whine and whine. He must be behind in the polls. Test a man's character by how he responds when he is behind. This may possibly be the reason why Barack pulled ahead in the Democratic primary.
By the way, they should know what whining is because they accuse others of the same thing.

Has it occurred to anyone yet that no elected President will probably ever be able to have as much control over government as the Bush administration. He has done such a wonderful job that his approval rating is in the tank and has been for 3 years. Yes, Americans have decided that the fascist hold on government may not be such a good idea afterall. They tried to throw off the shackles in 2006. Fortunately for Bush and company, Americans do not hang leaders like this. We try to correct our mistakes at the next election, unless like in 2004 another election is stolen.
