John McCain

Schmidt Takes Over Day-to-Day Leadership of McCain Campaign

By Michael D. Shear and Chris Cillizza
Sen. John McCain has once again shaken up his campaign staff, reducing the role of campaign manager Rick Davis and vesting political adviser Steve Schmidt with "full operational control" of the entire campaign.

Sources close to the campaign said Schmidt will continue to report to Davis, who will shift his attention to focus on fundraising, the selection of a vice presidential nominee and the running of the convention this August.

The changes were announced in a staff meeting this morning.

Schmidt will take over just about everything else, according to two senior sources in the campaign. The political, coalitions, volunteer and communications departments will report to him, as will the regional campaign managers.

Several McCain advisers said they believed Schmidt intends to scrap Davis' plan to give the regional managers wide latitude to run the operations in their states. Instead, the sources said they expect Schmidt to hire a political director and a field director -- two positions that are traditional elements of a presidential campaign.

"Schmidt's going to run the campaign. He's still going to report to Rick. But he's going to have much broader ability to make decisions," said one top McCain aide. "When he says something to the political people, there will be no question, no discussing."

The Post was the first to report last week that Schmidt would no longer be a constant presence on the campaign trail and would instead be spending more time in McCain's Arlington headquarters.

Those close to the campaign cast the decision to bring Schmidt into a more prominent role as a day to day manager was made by Davis. "He recognized the need to strengthen the internal leadership of the campaign," said the source.

But it was also a clear reaction to the frustration expressed by those outside the campaign, who have said repeatedly over the past several weeks that McCain's presidential effort had made several mistakes and appeared to have a muddled message.

"They've been playing this ripped-from-the-headlines game. Whatever is hot or interesting for the day is what they've been talking about," said one former McCain adviser who is no longer with
the campaign. "There's no overall message. There's nothing that Sen. McCain is driving over a period of time. "

The adviser added: "Hopefully, this is Steve taking over and someone being in charge of message."

The changes come a year to the day after McCain's first primary campaign imploded last summer. In July of 2007, McCain elevated Davis to manager after the departure of Terry Nelson, a former top strategist for President Bush, and John Weaver, one of the senator's
closest advisers.

Nope, you are wrong. George W. Bush had his hand on the trigger. He was where the buck stopped, and is the worst thing that ever happened to America so far as an overall effect.

It comes as no surprise that the Obama cult members would accept that as a fact and go on about their worshiping of their deceitful Messiah. I have to wonder though just what do you think his "change" means. If your answer is Socialism, high, HIGH taxes and redistribution of income then you are on the right track.

You are so juvenile it is disgusting. All this nonsense that you have spewed in your post lets everyone know that you have no knowledge about elections and or the politics of this country.

When has the presidential election ever been won by the popular vote? If this was the case then Al Gore would have been president in 2000. But, I suspect that you already know that and your post is just to vent the fact that your chosen candidate lost the democratic primary.

But if you expect anyone here or anywhere else to beleive in the sincerity of a voter who claims that their chosen candidate was Hilary Clinton (who lost) and now is now voting for McCain to teach the Democrats a lesson then you are more stupid than your post depicts.

If you want to support McCain then do so. This is your right in a democratic society but stop calling foul in an arena where clearly there was no foul committed.

Grow up!

Well said. McCane is passing into the "saber tooth tiger" category. He is a bit out of touch and old fashioned. In this case old school is not a good thing.

Obama has a whole lot more instinct for management and organization that was very apparent in how he overcame the Clinton juggernaut. McCain appears to be sleep walking and not really concerned about his ineffectiveness. Maybe he isn't even aware of it. Does he have Giuliani on his executive strategy staff?

I like Obama for his vision, his confidence, his accurate perceptions and his energy. All vitally important qualities to steer the ship of state. Its going to be a real breath of fresh air.

How many attacks can you document at home or abroad before 1980s (hint: before Reagan took office)? I know many people who were excited to work in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Malayasia, Indonesia, Phillipines.

Not being attacked by jetliners is not a coincidence, because of the airport/airline security measures. Nothing to do whatsoever with the war in Iraq. Most of the people we are fighting against there wouldn't be able to point to US on the globe or in atlas.

Practicing Osteopolitics ain't easy. But this party platform invented under Reagan and then resurrected in 2000 is not cutting it for me in 2008.

In my mind, I still hear Bush saying, "I believe in supply-side spending", "Corporations are people too", and "The Economy is fundemenatally sound". Would be ok if they were political soundbytes but these ideals were actually put into practice ? I have to clue where these metaphyscians got a clue but to me they still have not a clue.

Today I heard so much rhetoric on cutbacks at Starbucks by the MSM it was amazing. Luxury item purchases decrease in proportion to disposable income. I guess those rebate checks were not spent at Starbucks. Now where oh where did that money go, gasolene maybe ? Makes me proud to be an independent now as a former lifetime Republixcan, ahhhhhhh, Independence Day, indeed.

Roam the Mideast? Probably never was a good time to roam that area. There certainly were plenty of attacks prior to 9/11 including NYC WTC the first time. No attacks on our homeland and that is no coincidence. The terrorists have had there way with the innocent for sometime now. It did not begin with 9/11. Honestly now, if Captain America cannot forge an effective campaign with a four-month head start what make people think he can lead a country? I don't care what sort of hero jet fighter pilot he was 50 years ago. Who, or what, is he today?
He cannot raise sufficient funds for a Fall campaign so the taxpayers are bailing him out; the Bush people are raising what money they can for him; Karl Rove is quietly installing opeatives in the Cheap Shot Express' to replace the old tires McNane put on; he has all but moved into the RNC because he cannot get a campaign apparatus to call home; he is about to bring on a man he hates onboard as his Veep candidate out of desperation..Mitt `The Knife' Romney..because Mitt has the perfect political soul (empty) and can attack Obama for the cameras will be poses pious, raise money where even the Bush people cannot, and deploy is quiet Mormon army in those precious western states. That's because `Captain America' has virtually no grassroots organizations outside the RNC in any of his former 11 regions.
McCain's his policies have earned him the nickname `McSame' because he essentially has no significant policies of his own.
That's enough of a GOP pep talk. But, I don't think Captain America is doing so well.

Why the metric has to be so narrow as "not being attacked" or "not being attacked on the mainland" or "not being attacked on the mainland with American Airline Jets rammed into tall building in morning in September?"

More Americans have died since 9/11 than on 9/11! And at what cost? And at what security? Do you feel safer now to roam the world including the Mideast as you used to do so freely?

If not being attacked is a true metric, it was already achieved on 9/12/2001 because there were no attacks on 9/12/2001.

Melissa Shuffield, we need to spread this across the news!

JOHN McCAIN'S 3R ECONOMIC PLAN 2008
Abbreviated version

Republican Candidate John McCain with a progressive outlook, comes through for America with his 3R economic plan. In the persona of Theodore Roosevelt, McCain's plan just makes sense.

NUTS AND BOLTS of the plan are simple.

The US needs a separate tax revenue source before it can move away from fossil energy fuels which supply hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes for state and federal agencies.

This move from fossil fuels to clean, affordable energy can only be done in one of two ways.
1. Halt all projects paid for with taxes at the pump and other fuel taxes, OR,
2. John McCain's Economic Plan involving the 3R's, Rethink, Reform, Reinvent.

Here is the John McCain 3R solution.

The US needs alternative taxes if we are to drop the petrol products tax and utilize new alternative fuels and new power sources. This is where the taxes will come from.

McCain's 3R is about technical, closely monitored and rapid hands on training from pros to create new pros. Thousands of currently-job-displaced "once leaders in the manufacturing arena" will be asked to train and play instructor rolls in the 3R plan.

Paid, of course, as these new leaders will help create a whole new style of prosperous America. A massive restructure providing thousands of new American MFG companies means millions of new jobs for infrastructure alone.

1. RETHINK: America must see globally on what America is capable of in our current state of technology, engineering and meet the demands that face the world.

"RE-Think" the basic job goals involve the dwindling retirement, health care and social security plans that are failing Americans. With a strong base and a higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP) America has a new bargaining chip in the way we live and the ways we retire.

Private Sector framework is in place and current laws allow the 3R to happen. The Progressive attitude of John McCain to get things done by crossing party lines will resurrect America.

2. REFORM: The American people must demand higher quality products and less restricted trade routes for Made in USA components. We will lead the way of MFG again!

The USA will reform its dead manufacturing base to create the most innovative and green-engineered products possible. We will compete in a world market along with other high quality products. Our Private Sector teams are making this reality now.

3. REINVENT: America and Americans must reinvent themselves to reach and maintain these standards and by sheer American ingenuity, control the world's marketplace in the competitive manner, as the USA has always been proud to be #1.

Americans are going back to McCain's 3R-schooling program where they are paid to reinvent their skills and learn new skills to design and lead their personal LLC, Corporation or joint venture company. That's easy enough to comprehend and just as easy to implement.

The 3R plan is designed as a six-month rapid advancement system. Graduates may return for additional skill enhancements from time to time, or step up after new advanced training in executive management.

New jobs are the mainstay for Creating a new guard for Social Security.

While manufacturing is a very important part of this plan, thousands of other new businesses must to be created to meet the new surge of 3R manufacturing industries to create a new era of prosperous Americans.

Initial estimates of 1 in 5 students will begin his or her own company and drive even more Americans into a viable lifestyle with real jobs, real benefits and a retirement to look forward to.

This 3R plan will be done without costing taxpayers (or the government) additional funds. America has the means to follow through with John McCain's 3R plan, ready and in place across the USA. The buildings we need sit vacant for the most part. By assuming leases on abandoned stores and factories across America with MC-3R schools and mini-manufacturing training centers, the USA made products can be sold and support the stores. Building owners write off the loss in taxes over a few years if they donate the space!

This is the new place for financial speculators to invest!

The speculators who first drove the economy with mortgage investments and most recently with crude oil investments have a better arena for their investments. America as nation of industrious individuals who want to work and want to succeed will make them huge profits. The supply of eager Americans with ideas and dreams to prosper is limitless.

Although the thousands of new businesses manufacturing USA Made products is exciting enough, the real excitement comes from the massive amount of additional jobs that will be created to provide the new housing, new buildings, new parks, shopping, grocery stores, schools, government outlets and so much more.

McCain's Straight Talk Decisive nature embodies a Progressive Theodore Roosevelt more than any US presidential candidate in history since the original Rough Rider blazed the greatest era of growth in America.

We need John McCain to lead our nation with the same type of change.

If it aint Broke don't Fix it. Rick Davis Big Time Lobbyist with serious Soviet connections has been fired (replaced) by Steve Schmidt as McCain campaign manager. Steve was George Bush campaign manager and Cheney strategist. McCain finally came to the realization that his campaign was Broken. With Steve Schmidt in charge (for now) looks like we have George Bush II repackaged as McCain. As you are exiting the darkened moviehouse where the multi-reel dramedy you have been perceiving as reality for the last several months is finished rolling the credits, please note that in the real world Hilary lost and that Obama studiously avoided race-tactics. That was Bill who tried to make Obama the BLACK candidate instead of a presidential candidate in a place where it was a historically hot issue. Remember segregation. Obama conducted a brilliant campaign using the system created by the Democratic Party when he was too young to hold public office. His David vs. Goliath defeat of a practically annointed candidate is proof enough of his ability try and put this broken country back together. Just because someone looks good on paper, doesn't mean they are in fact better and this country has had enough examples of this to prove it. You need a refresher course in US history if you don't believe me -- any source you want to use the truth is in all of them. You obviously have enough intelligence to string words to form sentences, but common sense and rationality are lacking. You don't punish Obama, you punish yourself. You are a disgrace to the women's movement, past, present and future. The longer you cling to your bitterness (deliberate and appropriate word choice), the more you bring shame on yourself and embarass Hilary. You will be embraced by the Republicans until they have your vote and then you will be booted out of the bed like a $5 hooker. Have some self-respect, please. Your behavior gives credence to all men who think women are emotionally and intellectually unstable. Thank God your numbers are small and we have Hilary to offset your kind. If you genuinely care about the future of this country you will continue to follow Hilary to Obama. You can try again in 2012, but the 2008 primary is OVER fair and square by the rules agreed upon by both candidates. Grow up, you're a middle aged woman and temper tamtrums are truly unbecoming after the age of 4 or 5. I am sorry you feel marginalized, but you are going down the wrong path if you want vindication. Put your energies to constructive use or stay home until the urge to key Obamas car, TP his house and throw water balloons at him passes.

Re: Policy Discourse

This is great news.

Senator McCain needs to clarify his policy goals first and then derive a theme to fit into his overall policy discourses--instead of "distancing" himself from Bush. McCain also needs his own voices that work for his policy visions, instead of defending himself from Obama's charge of "Bush's Third Term."

Senator Obama has no policies that make sense. His economic policy is even dangerous threatening multilateralism and international trading system, WTO. The fact that the Democratic Party itself is discrediting 8 years of Clinton administration in that he expanded free trade agreements and initiated the institutionalization of WTO under his leadership is just a populist discourse.

Senator Obama's protectionism won't work for the twenty-first century. His economic
policy shows that he has no clue how many international trade agreements the United States currently has to enforce to revitalize the economy of the United States. The United States has to commit itself to international trade agreements under the rules of WTO as a global leader.

When Senator McCain has a clear global vision for America, voters will see that Logic of free trade in relation to national security, which has been tested most effective since the Reagan administration.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 2, 2008 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Good! Let's get a strong message out there from mcCain about his being the better choice for President.

One thing to do is tap into the many grievances that the former Hillary suporters have with their former party. Who are we? The PUMAS! Let me assure all, our "goal" is not to beat the Republicans, it's to ensure that democracy, with a fair and free electoral system is upheld. That is why the Obama people don't get why we PUMAS are so ticked off and so intent on making sure the Selected doesn't become the next POTUS. If he had real qualifications, practiced non-Chicagoan campaign strategies, had a record we could actually review and believe in, and actually kept his word on his "positions" longer than a couple of weeks, we might actually be more inclined to listen. So we are open and ripe for the McCain camp pickings.

What the Just Say No Deal coalition of websites and supporters can not tolerate is a selected nominee (presumptive, since nothing happens until the "Roll call" at the convention) who was given delegates that Hillary won in MI. Or that he was given the "uncommited" votes in MI - since when do the rules of the DNC say that a candidate should receive delegates from voters who didn't even choose that candidate? It's about democracy stupid!

I don't trust Obama because he changes his mind on everything he says he stands for, because he cries "race" everytime someone questions why he has no record of the very "change" he talks so eloquently about. Because his resume is one of the thinnest of any presidential candidate in the history or our country. I could care less about the color of his skin or the parents he was raised by. I do care that he didn't show enough "good judgement" to leave a church where his pastor spoke divisively and racially for 20 years. The list goes on.

But the movement that is "NoBama" is not just about of lack of faith in his abilities to lead this country, but more about the fact that if we support the candidate that was shoved down our throats by the DNC, the media, and the "party leaders", rather than the one who won the popular vote, then we can offically kiss "democracy" and free elctions good by. We are no different than any country with fixed elections, propaganda and backroom deals. THAT is the goal of the JUSTSAY NO DEAL coalition of sites. Go PUMAS! Go McCain! Come and get us!
