To Juliet Eilperin, Your facts are incorrect in regards to the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. What you see in the photo is not a "painting" but an image - not even the scientists can explain how this image is on a cactus fiber burlap type cloth, called a tilma, which is over 450 years old. Usually such a fabric would only last 20 years. The tilma was what Juan Diego wore when he saw Our Lady. After arranging the roses growing on the mountain in the middle of the winter, Our Lady arranged them in the Tilma and Juan was told to only open them in the presence of Bishop Zumaraga. When he did the roses fell, which were an answered prayer of the Bishop to verify Our Lady's appearances, the image came onto the tilma. What is the point of visiting the Basilica de Guadalupe? Why would a presidential candidate, member of the anglican church, would pick to visit the Basilica on a trip to Mexico? The Roses fell to the floor. The Image appeared on the tilma. She appears as the Woman of Revelation 12. The Images, colors, symbols etc, had deep meaning for the Aztec people, hence over the next 10 years they converted. In the 1890's it was discovered that the eyes of the Virgin reflect the scene of the men present when the Image was given. Studies have failed to show any natural means for the Image's existence.
