McCain's Latest Iran Joke

By Michael D. Shear
Sen. John McCain hasn't had good luck joking about Iran. But he tried it again Tuesday.

Responding to a question about a survey that shows increased exports to Iran, mainly from cigarettes, McCain said, "Maybe that's a way of killing them."

He quickly caught himself, saying "I meant that as a joke" as his wife, Cindy, poked him in the back.

Last time, it was also Iran. His singing about bombing Iran to the theme of the Beach Boy's "Barbara Ann" drew derision from many quarters but a "lighten up" response from McCain.

The Timetable for Pulling our Troops out of Afghanastan depends on technology. Just as soon as we can drill the oil that's beneath Afghani Sand with a rig based in Houston, Texas, we'll bring the troops home. Our military, the one thing that protects us, you and me, is immobile without fossile fuel. Get it? Plainly put, we can't run tanks, planes, ships, rockets without fossile fuel. We're in Iraq and in Afghanistan so that we can secure fossile fuel for our industry, transportation, and military use. Elect McCain we stay; elect Obama, we stay until the wells run dry or until some PhD invents an alternate technology that will power an F22 fighter or a B2 bomber. Get it? Nations with low military might get invaded and conquered. Check out "The Rape of Nanking" by Rahn Joseph to see what happens when a nation gets conquered.

McCain has a serious problem, he is fixated on killing people and starting in his own words, "more wars". The mainstream press is afraid to talk the psychological consequences of his prolonged torture. Torture so severe that McCain made propaganga films for the NVA. We NEED TO KNOW. I do not believe this man is fit to be commander-in-chief.
McCain was not a coawrd for doing bombing runs. That's modern warfare, unfortunately. But he was the bottom of his class and it is questionable whether he would have been in the pilot program, if his dad hadn't been an admiral. It's intersting that both he and Bush chose to be pilots -no doubt it had to do with the much lower casuality rate, and the panache of being an "Ace".

Posted by: Bart | July 18, 2008 5:05 PM

Hmmm. What if the McCain's words had been "shoot, shoot a black" or "rape, rape your wife", would it still be a joke. Let's ask a psychoanalyst okay? If his own experience of torture justifies his "joke" then he is not over it, but projecting is rage outward, displacing on to others what he would like to do to those who abused him. Or maybe he's a chip off the old Reagan block, but losing his mind before assuming office.

Posted by: willy jarnbol | July 18, 2008 4:10 PM

zakimar,

Seriously hippie? I am an Obama supporter, but McCain spent over half a decade being tortured so you have the right to call him a coward. Wishing our own soldiers death...you're pathetic.

Posted by: Jack L | July 16, 2008 4:02 PM

McCain was a coward for dropping bombs from 10 000 feet onto Asian women and children and supports dropping bombs on Arab women and children and now wants to drop bombs on Persian women and children. McCain is a coward and a hypocrite who supports war and torture but not diplomacy and veterans. Too bad the Vietnamese didn't kill McCain like he killed their people and like him and Bush are torturing people to death in Guantanamo!

Posted by: zakimar | July 16, 2008 3:41 AM

I am so embarassed.. that we as country manage to have such an idiot as a presidential candidate. It seems that having McCain will continue with this tradition...

Singing bomb bomb bomb iran, talking about killing iranians with cigarettes.. it is simply a poor testimony, and there are so many reasons why it is simply wrong.

The world is simply astonished. Unfortunately thats how great countries fall, look at history, thats what happened to Rome.. all it takes is a couple idiots on the helm.

God save us all... it seems that the only thing McCain has on its mind is bomb Iran, kill Iranians....

It is totally Up to Americans to let another loser run their beloved country for several more years.
It is totally Wrong to talk about any one in such manner. Concidering that this person is alos going to be The President of a country like USA, it is pretty scarey.
I often ask myself when would the American want to wake up and act like the rest of the World does really matter to them? When would they want to pick a nice person for presidency? when would they want to begin not looking at the rest of the world as more resources to use, burn and waste?!

I think Mccains can never benifit the Interest of mejority of the good-loving hardworking people of USA.

He and his type is simply not a good choice.
best of the wishes:)

McCain and many others in the media always support Israel's right to defend itself. So when/if Israel bombs Iran and Iran retaliates by raining missiles down on Tel Aviv, I suppose only the hypocrites will not support Iran's right to defend itself.

Posted by: zakimar | July 13, 2008 2:24 AM

It takes a sick and twisted individual to think that killing people is amusing.

WHY DOES JOHN MCCAIN THINK BLOWING PEOPLE UP IS FUNNY?

Hello, America - clue #1 that this person is unstable!

Posted by: Matt M. | July 11, 2008 11:03 AM

Wow... he is REALLY out of touch with the world.

I lived in Washington for a few years, I personally knew about a dozen Iranians. Guess what, McCain? They were really nice people!

ANYONE who makes comments like that should not be president! Funny thing, if someone made comments like that about McCain, he would probably be arrested, or if he was in another country, would be bombed.

Get in touch with the world, old man.

Posted by: tennisguypitt | July 10, 2008 7:26 PM

JustAnAmerican - if you investigate what happened prior to Khomeini you will find that the CIA was involved in removing Mossadegh from office and instating the Shah. This was later overthrown and led to Khomeini and the religious extremism there today. The U.S. most assuredly is responsible at least in part.

Also, it is generally accepted that Israel does have Nuclear weapons and has for some time though they have continued to deny this.

Posted by: Robert | July 10, 2008 6:44 PM

The whole world hates the US. Your country is bullying the world, trying to pick wars with every country in the world. Vietnam, North Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, China etc...

You are the real threat to the world. You need to realize that the more countries you bully, the more enemies you're going to create. What you think is going to make you safer, will actually make you more targeted and hated. For each person you kill, their whole families, from brothers, fathers, sons, and daughters, as well as friends and neighbors, there hearts will be filled with hatred and they will seek revenge.

The world needs peace. I pray for peace.

I support McCain on some issues and Obama on others. I just have to respond to Justadad55+'s post immediately below. Defending Iran and blaming the United States is a pretty uninformed thing to do for several reasons: the regime in Iran (dating back to Khomeini) essentially founded the religious extremism that spawns today's terrorists, whether they conduct acts in Israel, Lebanon, or Iraq; Iran fuels the insurgency in Iraq and backs the violence that intentionally kills Iraqi civilians; Iran is pursuing nuclear/biological weapons to exert the real type of imperialism that America mistakenly gets accredited with; Iran openly harbors terrorist groups. The region is a threat because many of the governments in the Middle East will not control radical militant groups that not only want to perpetuate violence against Israel but also Europe and the United States; the disparity created between radical militants and the peaceful Muslim populations in each country in the Middle East spawns internal violence and external instability -- allowing it to thrive puts the world at risk.

I resent McCain's cynical statements; I also resent the notion that Americans are a threat to the rest of the world, an idea that comes from a lack of understanding the facts and history of the Middle East. Read a book on the political history of the Islamist government in Iran and then tell me if they are as innocent as you think they are. Let's not attack Iranian civilians; let's restore order in areas that desperately need it in order to progress beyond religious, social and ideological oppression. The first step is keeping Iran in check, especially since they still threaten to start a nuclear war.

Posted by: JustAnAmerican | July 10, 2008 9:33 AM

Your President started an unnecessary war, for oil, millions have died in a Region where we will never be needed, nor posed any real threat to the US. The USA is complaining about Iran, but showing off your new drones that can travel several thousand miles, conflicting massive assaults. Now, I must as all Americans. Who is the real threat to the world? I don't blame Iran, the world is worried. And you wonder why gas is up and people are loosing homes. You are to dam busy meddling in others affairs. Your only income is yet more military hardware that will esculate a world on the brink of the big war. Speaking of weapons of mass destruction. Look in the Mirror, friends, will it never end? Sick joke Senator McCain.

Posted by: justadad55+ | July 10, 2008 7:17 AM

When you have to say "that was a joke," you've already figured out that what you just said was tasteless and not funny. It's frankly sick to make a joke out of the fact that American cigarettes have killed so many people.

Posted by: JohnD | July 10, 2008 12:40 AM

Drivel and blather...do you think anyone really cares about all these comments or is persuaded by any of your arguments?

Posted by: Russ | July 9, 2008 11:38 PM

The bottom line is McCain is a war machine fanatic who has no reservations about killing innocent children. His poor military service is as bad as that of Bush Jr. He's a closet racist and doesn't have a clue about what it takes to be President.

Posted by: byter | July 9, 2008 11:06 PM

DCDave,
He really is funny. I love when he walks how he looks like a penguin. That's what you were calling funny wasn't it.

Posted by: RG | July 9, 2008 10:56 PM

Guido,

You're not aware that McCain restricts the press now. Your excuse for McCain's lack of discipline and professionalism means you set low stand for your leader. Bush has had excuses for 5 years, its the basis of his Iraq policy. If you had demanded competence from your president we would not be in the economic mess we are in today. Guido, it's time for a change.

Posted by: RG | July 9, 2008 10:51 PM

Maybe, while doing Barak's dirty work, Chris-bama could make the point here and there that the reason for all these comments by McCain is that he takes questions from everyone, everywhere. He talks the press until THEY are exhausted and he isn't afraid to talk like a normal person, including making off-the-cuff remarks. Obama doesn't have as many gaffes because he hides from the press and only performs rehearsed pieces to carefully selected audiences of fawning rubes.

Posted by: guido | July 9, 2008 9:47 PM

People including the media always stress that Iran is an enemy of America. However, it's never mentioned why that's the case. The US had the CIA overthrow the democratic Premier of Iran in 1953 Mossadeq and install the Dictator/tyrant the Shah who was supported by the US and encouraged his brutal oppression on the population. The situation under the Shah got so bad that the people actually welcomed the Ayatollah. Just as the British oppression of Germany after WWI was so bad (see the Treaty of Versailles) that the German people actually welcomed Hitler.
So once again McCain thinks he is justified in killing other people and overthrowing a foreign government (see how well that worked in Iraq - in another generation there will be an Ayatollah running Iraq too). If (God forbid) McCain gets elected, he will start a war with Iran, which has about 3 times the population of Iraq and is 4 times the size. McCain will need to draft US citizens to get the manpower for another war, oil prices will double, we will be paying over $8 per gallon and our economy will make the Great Depression look like a party. McCain's two "jokes" should frighten us more than the Iranians. McCain is Martin Sheen's character in the Dead Zone and Obama is Christopher Walken's character.

Posted by: zakimar | July 9, 2008 9:08 PM

DCDave wrote: "We should threaten Iran, maybe that way they will back down and dismantle their nuclear program without us having to bomb them."

Excuse me, have you not realized that this has been the Bush tactic for the last 5+ years, and it has not worked? Every time we make a threat, Iran comes back with their own threats which increase uncertainty in the oil markets and ultimately raise gasoline prices.

Posted by: Bill | July 9, 2008 8:24 PM

We should threaten Iran, maybe that way they will back down and dismantle their nuclear program without us having to bomb them.

Also McCain is a funny guy, much funnier than Obama

Posted by: DCDave | July 9, 2008 8:15 PM

People aren't angry enough at this man's awful awful 'jokes'. If you were Iranian, it wouldn't sound like a joke, it would sound like a threat. To put it in perspective, what would happen if someone 'joked' about killing McCain? Everyone would be up in arms. Why is one any more allowable than the other?

Posted by: Rawkcuf | July 9, 2008 7:52 PM

From Reuters:

"Maybe that's a way of killing 'em," McCain said to reporters during a campaign stop in Pittsburgh. "I meant that as a joke, as a person who hasn't had a cigarette in 28 years, 29 years," he added, laughing.

So the joke has to do with the cigarette-smoking and NOT the fact that he just "jokingly" talked about killing a nation of people???!!!

This is truly frightening. Do people really not think that this man is going to drag our country into another unilateral war?

Posted by: Gator-ron | July 9, 2008 3:38 PM

As an Iranian this is an offensive statement. The sad thing is that Iranian people are being oppressed by their own government as well as the US government on a daily basis.

It is not a JOKE Mr. McCain! It reveals what is really in your mind. It would be a shame if this person gets elected.

More geezer humor from our gaffer. Don't think we're yet enough of a geriatric America for it to appeal, though.

Posted by: Old white vet | July 9, 2008 2:51 PM

I suppose McCain thinks that dying from cancer is a funny way to go. And since when is it good campaign strategy to advocate the killing of citizens of another country? This guy is truly the most inept candidate of any party in recent history. He tries to use humor to make him seem like an "everyman" (and not someone who married into a fortune), but his sense of humor is just flat and stupid.

For all of you who call McPain a "leader" with "experience", he has had several incidents this campaign where someone has to whisper in his ear or poke him in the back to either keep him in check or guide him in his answer. Nice leadership.

John:

Much as we'd love to follow your advice, the direction this country is headed in requires our paying attention and taking action right now.

Top military officials who have served in Iraq have said America will need to reinstate the draft just to maintain in Iraq. The Pentagon has hired an outside firm to create a database on draft eligible high school and college students. The military keeps lowering its standards just to meet recruitment goals. McCain stated in May 2008, "We don't have a big enough Army."

McCain is not an entertainer. He is not a morning radio host, he is not a TV chat show host, he is not a standup comedian, a talking head nor a columnist. He is a U.S. senator asking to be elected to the Office of the President of the United States. I don't want my political leaders provocatively "funny"; that's not their job. I don't want Obama telling the jokes Chris Rock does and I don't want Hillary Clinton using Sarah Silverman's punchlines. There's nothing inherently evil about what McCain said and I don't doubt he meant it in a jocular fashion. But even if the remark was itself relatively benign, it's inappropriate for THIS man to be telling it at THIS time. The fact that McCain seems unable to curb his tongue speaks negatively about his temperment and (lack of) self-control and restraint. The President is also the chief diplomat and politician and diplomats and politicians should know when to curb their tongues. The fact that McCain can't seem to restrain himself speaks poorly about his fitness for the office he seeks.

Posted by: Peter Lee | July 9, 2008 1:53 PM

This is exactly what America must avoid, bellicose statements like, "wiping Israel off the map." Where do you draw the line between (poor taste in) humor or insidious empty threats?

Saber rattling only increases the belligerence of Iran's hardliners and undermines America's credibility among our allies.

Mr. McCain should offer a formal apology to the Iranian people, the most pro-America Muslim nation, and America's greatest ally in Iran against Islamic fundamentalism.

Its amazing and will be the last wonder of the world to elect another war monger.

God have mercy on America.

Jokes tend to reflect the true nature of the man. Dark humor, as the so called ex-Viet Nam vet called it, reflects those with dark spitits. Saying dark things when one is engaged personally in combat is one thing, to say them when one is actively engaged in running for the presidency of the US is another.

There is no excuse for McShame's continued use of death jokes against Iran and Iranians on the campaign trail. What an image this sends about the Man, the GOP and the US. How are we to persuade a people that we are behind them, even if we are against and despise their despicable leaders, if we joke about killing everyone including the people?

We can do better than this. We are better than this! We just cannot let this man and his temperament / dark side win the White House.

Posted by: Vgirl1 | July 9, 2008 1:48 PM

"Personal Jew on a string?" says BKMJ.

Regardless of the context (an oft-used excuse by McCain when faced with questionable comments of his and his supporters), this type of talk reflects more poorly of the person who typed it than anyone being referred to. I for one do not believe it is relevant or adds any value.

Posted by: crazy4glf@yahoo.com | July 9, 2008 1:15 PM

Well, Mcclane has done it again. Joking about the deaths of human beings. I'll bet his handlers are scolding him right now for his downright dangerous attempt at a joke. Of course, McSame is like Bush -- he no more knows what is going on around him than the man in the moon. Wonder what the DDDUUUHHH express will come up with next. McSame still doesn't understand how the Iraqi Government could double-cross him by calling for a timetable to withdraw all American Troops from Iraq, while it chums up with Iran.

Posted by: caliguy55 | July 9, 2008 1:00 PM

Being a POW doesn't qualify anybody to be president any more that it qualifies anybody to be a concert pianist, architect, primary school teacher, or used car dealer. In fact, the POW experience may actually make it harder to handle some of those jobs. Exhibit A is John McCain. He says he hates war, but his joking about "bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran" makes it obvious that he doesn't think about how it feels to be on the receiving end of his bombs. I would have thought that September 11, 2001 would have made it possible for him to feel how civilians felt during the bombing of downtown Panama City, downtown Hue, Hanoi, Haiphong, downtown Beirut, downtown Baghdad, downtown Belgrade -- but apparently not.

Posted by: John | July 9, 2008 11:57 AM

Mccain is no combat vet. He ducked out of real military service by getting into the naval academy even though he had grades that would never have let someone like him in. Then he went into aviation again even though not qualified because of who his family was. He then did his part of the war from the safety of his plane as he dropped bombs. He was, based on his history, probably shot down due to his own stupidity and ineptness. He was just one step above a draft dodger using his family connections to get him a position he was in no way qualified for. Mccain was "NEVER" at any time a leader of men when in the navy. He neither lead or commanded anyone, because he was not qualified. You don't want your life in the hands of someone so obviously unqualified as Mccain, in Viet Nam or today as president.

++++++++++
Obviously the people who critize his attempt at humor are not combat vets. McCain being a combat vet along with otheras always used dark humor to lighten up an otherwise pressure situation. I love how this election is about Obama, and Obama alone. Hell, even 100 word article that never mentions his name sparks comments about him.

John McCain hates campaigning. He hates being in front of cameras - and he obviously hates lying about his personal views for the sake of the right wing and this election.

And yet, no one cares about John McCain. They all care about Obama.

This November when the majority of you go to the polls, you will push the button either for or against Obama. None of you will choose McCain. You will choose against Obama.

You are becoming too easy to read, too easy to piss off, and too easy to predict. I laugh my ass off at you every day! I will be sad when the day comes that I won't be entertained by your inane comments!

I swear its better than Comedy Central, and 3 times as retarded. Tune In Daily!

What's amazing is someone who touts all of this foreign policy knowledge doesn't seem to know that Iranians generally like the U.S. more than any other country - their government is not reflective of the people. If his military strategy is to bomb every government that doesn't like us then the world is in alot of trouble because we're not too popular anywhere right now. McCain, with his continual stupid statements and misspeaks is answering the question of how being a POW qualifies him toe President - it doesn't.

Most of the comments here refect the real nature of our problems in the United States. The comments are hateful without any merit and for the most part those in these postings are ill informed about world and national politics. They offer no solutions just rhetoric and prove that the dumbing down of the average American is complete thats to the GOP who could not give a rats ass about educating the American people. I truely feel sorry for our country and what it has become.

Some posters are partially correct on McCain's statement. It is what many Americans are thinking, too. Many stupid Americans, that is.

Let's see. If Ahmedinejad said that he approved of Iranians selling us stuff to kill us, would you guys get a chuckle?

What is the difference?

Posted by: steve boyington | July 9, 2008 10:33 AM

This is an extremely offensive and telling statement by McCain. First of all, the Iranian people are not the problem. The problem is the Iranian government. Just as we did not like Osama bin Laden killing innocent civilians for the actions of the US government, we need to understand what the problem is. Its clear from this "joke" and from other statements, that McCain doesn't understand this difference. He believes all Iranians are evil and that we should bomb and kill them.

Second, the fact that he is so cavalier in his stupid statements does not bode well for his ability to carry on meaningful relationships with other leaders.

What we have in McCain is a warmongering, ignorant fool that doesn't know how to get along with others.

Posted by: enoughalready | July 9, 2008 10:32 AM

Umm, I thought the JOKE was funny. It can only be taken as a JOKE because cigarettes take way too long to get rid of the Iranians....

The Mccain calling his wife a C is not a rumor you have to take on faith. He said it in front of a group of people. It's not a rumor.

+++++++
It is comments like these that makes me believe McCain called his wife a "c&nt" and other deragotory things. For a presidential candidate to infer that cigarettes "killing the population of Iran is a good thing", is reprehensible. McCain should not be running for President. He lacks judgement and intelligence.

hey obama not blah blah, here's an interesting read for you:

"You have two choices for president:

The first one has one of the longest lines of political experience in history. He is exceedingly popular in congress. He was a soldier who volunteered to defend the United States in the Navy.

The second one has no real political experience outside of Illinois. He is tall and lanky with big ears. He even lost a few of his first attempts at gaining political office. He is an excellent speechwriter and orator. He is a good attorney and has a successful law practice.

So which one would you choose?

This is a trick question because both were already Presidents of the United States. The first one is the 15th President of the United States, James Buchannan. He is the President who mired us in the Civil War by declaring the action illegal but doing nothing when the south decided to seceed from the Union. He is largely considered by historians as being the worst President in American history.

He was followed by the other man who became the 16th President of the United States: Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln is credited with the end of slavery, the end of the Civil War, and unification of the nation. He became president at a dark time when our country was deeply divided over very polarizing issues. He had no experience in Washington prior to his Presidency. He is widely considered by historians as one of the best Presidents in American History."

now let me elaborate. the fact of the matter is that we have no idea what we are going to get from obama OR mccain. bush had no experience beside being the governor of texas, and we all remember how woefully inadequate his knowledge of foreign affairs... and hell, GEOGRAPHY was before he took office. then again, looking at the sorry state of america right now, that probably is not the best example, but the fact of the matter is that we have to look at the present issues and how each candidate looks at them. this means investigating them yourself, not just listening to the slant that your pundits spoonfeed you. let me straighten you out really quick:

obama said he wants to give prisoners habeus. ok, where's the problem with this? give them a day in court so we can actually find out if they're innocent or guilty. brother, i was in afghanistan for 9.5 months of my life, & i saw what the detention centers were like in kandahar & bagram. the problem with the "war on terror" (a stupid premise in itself to go to war with an EMOTION) is that there are no enemy troops in 3rd reich uniforms. you don't know who the good and bads guys are. why detain them ALL indefinitely on the TAXPAYER BUCK with only confessions coherced by torture as evidence? i got news for you: the reason saddam's troops surrendered so easily is because they were expecting good treatment from our military. food, shelter and no torture. defending our ideals makes fighting on the ground easier for us. tarnishing that puts troops in jeopardy.

what weapons is he against to use on al qaeda? as far as i can tell, he wants to stop wasting resources and taxpayer money in iraq and go after the REAL enemy. by the way, why did we invade iraq again? all i remember is my commander and half of my combat equipment being boxed up & shipped to kuwait early march 2003. not very conducive to catching bin Laden, you would think.

flip flops about talking to iran's president? no, he actually never mentioned ahmadinejad. that's be like going to work and asking your boss' secretary for a raise. he meant grand ayatollah khomeini, who actually runs the country. if you're so knowledgeable on jimmy carter history, maybe you can think back a little further to how nixon defied the "isolate your enemy" logic by opening up trade with china.

now mccain wants to continue in iraq, bomb bomb iran and maintain afghanistan. i, my friend, am a conservative, not a NEOCON. regardless of whether we can usurp their natural resources, we CAN NOT AFFORD mccain. our enemies the taliban and al qaeda have reformed in the paki tribal regions, and one of the candidates said he'd get them. why does obama sound more conservative than mccain? you used to depend on conservatives to END WARS! close up shop in iraq, don't waste time in iran and clean up in afghan/paki. bring them home & keep our $ in the USA.

McCain Croc list:

*The old McCain didn't want an amendment and didn't want Roe overturned. The new McCain completely disagrees with the old McCain.

*McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as "an agent of intolerance" in 2002, but has since decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans "deserved" the 9/11 attacks. (Indeed, McCain has now hired Falwell's debate coach.)

*McCain used to oppose Bush's tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.

* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending "dirty money" to help finance Bush's presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.

* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June, he abandoned his own legislation.

* McCain took a firm line in opposition to torture, and then caved to White House demands.

* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.

* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he's pro-ethanol.

* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.

From military records:

"In 1958 McCain crashed his first plane into Corpus Christi Bay on a practice flight. He crashed his second plane flying too low over the Iberian Peninsula and clipping power lines. McCain's third crash occurred when he was returning from flying a Navy trainer solo to Philadelphia for an Army-Navy football game. McCain's fourth aircraft loss occurred July 29, 1967, soon after he was assigned to the USS Forrestal as an A-4 Skyhawk pilot. While seated in the cockpit of his aircraft waiting his turn for takeoff, an accidently fired rocket slammed into McCain's plane. He escaped from the burning aircraft, but the explosions that followed killed 134 sailors, destroyed at least 20 aircraft, and threatened to sink the ship. McCain's fifth loss happened during his 23rd mission over North Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, when McCain's A-4 Skyhawk was shot down."

To Julian McCain has military discipline.

Obama is the one who will try to act tough for never serving.

Obama will make statements publicy about hitting pakistan that caused turmoil.

Obama's statements about pakistan caused massive deaths in pakistan against the government.

Obama's statements about pakistan caused friction between the parties.

Pakistan is very fragile you can't make statements like that publicly.

Obama is not qualified to be president. He has zero experience.

Obama is not fit to be president of this country maybe a country like iran he would make a good president. Then Obama could strike Israel and help Hamas.

Posted by: Obama not fit to be president of the united states | July 9, 2008 9:47 AM

And meanwhile, the price of oil shoots up $5.00 a barrel amid "increased tension between the U.S. and Iran." Hmmm... A very Republican-y pattern is emerging here: gaffe/sabre-rattling by a leading official, followed by an oil price spike. Wonder how much Cindy has invested in oil futures?

Posted by: gm | July 9, 2008 9:45 AM

To cynical, Obama has no experience.

He flips flops constantly on whether he will listen to the military or not.

First Obama announces he will attack Pakistan publicly. Then in a debate said he wouldn't strike Bin Laden if there was any chance of collateral damage and we shouldn't make him a martyr.

Obama also wants to give every prisoner in afghanistan habeus corpus rights.

Massive amount of prisoners will be let go and be on the attack again.

You don't win a war with a far leftist.

It is like saying we need Jimmy Carter to go after al queda.

This is a joke. Obama is against so many of the military weapons we are using against al queda.

Obama as commander and cheif is a joke.

He is for talking to the iran president then he is against it.

He is against the israel wall then he is for it.

He is for an undivided jerusalem to aipac then he is against it the next day.

Obama calls Maliki the president of Iraq when he is the prime minister.

It seems like our elections are like american idol.

McCain has been a leader on the senate armed services committee and it counts for nothing.

Obama has no experience.

McCain knows the world leaders. McCain has gone to nato security conference meetings every year.

McCain has gotten breifings.

Obama has ZERO experience. It seems like this election is a joke. The less qualified you are doesn't matter. If you have a cool name and you have a mixed color of your skin that is what is presidential.

McCain accused the POW/MIA activists of fraud, calling them "the most craven, most cynical and most despicable human beings to ever"
McCain is the one isn't qualified.
McCain should have never been allowed to graduate from the U.S. Navy flight school
McCain should be in jail.
McCain was a below average student and a lousy pilot.
During his relative short stunt on flight status, McCain lost five U.S. Navy aircraft, four in accidents and one in combat.
McCain is the one who isn't presidential.

1st of, those talking points are already irrelevant and completely out of the minds of the general electorate. sorry guys, but other than you folks who watch fox news and listen to rush religiously, those points aren't even the focus of discussion... and operation chaos won't matter in the general election, because none of you were gonna vote for the donkey party anyway.

seriously, i'm not really 100% thrilled with our candidates this time around, but at least:
a) they're both a whole lot better than bush vs. kerry,
b) at least bush is gone after this year, and
c) we may acutally have some good come out of this election, like being able to take your kid to the doctor for an ace bandage and some tylenol without having to pay $1,500 for a 30 minute visit.

and by the way, those comments mccain made were retarded. i don't care how you try to spin this. backhanded threats to THE PEOPLE of sovereign nation by a presidential candidate and potential commander in chief are unacceptable. threatening to skewer osama in pakistan if they don't let us in may have been inappropriate to say out loud too, but hell, i was a ranger who served 9.5 months up in those mountains, and i agree with that. iran hasn't attacked us. al qaeda did. i wish you dumbasses would finally realize that al qaeda is in afghanistan and pakistan, just like they were on 9/11 7 YEARS AGO. they're not in iraq, iran, venezuela, or any other country with oil that bush and cheney, and the vapid right wing pundits tell us we're not supposed to like.

Should we extradite him back to Vietnam to serve his sentance? McCain has organized his campaign around the theme of more war - he stands for NOTHING ELSE. This is the reason most people will not vote for him, no matter what else they may like about the pre-2000 McCain.

You may not be aware that Hillary Clinton did not write It Takes A Village. She hired a ghost and never gave the real writer any credit. Google it if you want details.

This holier than thou attitude that seems to prevail amongst the Hillary supporters is surprising considering the laundry list of sins committed by the Clintons. There is one thing for sure, Hillary is going to cause the Republicans to get back in office.

When she starts throwing mud, then she further divides the party. She will carry this same divisive attitude into the White House and she will get down to the business of paybacks to those who opposed her or fought against her. She will take that same combat attitude into the world as she meets with our enemies and tries to improve our standing in the world.

Hillary is the one who should be feared because she is the one who can hurt you the most. Doesn't anyone have any fear of a dynasty or co-monarchy setting up here.

For 30 years we have had a Bush or a Clinton in office. Bush 41 and Bill still stump together for their Foundation. There is another George Bush, son of Jeb, who is half Latino and would be ready to run in 2016. Then Chelsea would be in her 40's in 16 years would be about ready to run. This is getting dangerous and we the American people need to turn the page. We need somebody else to look after our interests other than a Bush or a Clinton. Obama may not be who you want, but we need to stop this co-monarchy before the democratic process slips away into acceptance of the next Bush or Clinton.

I quote... "Absolute power corrupts absolutely".

Andy Schreiber,

Obama hates Israel. Obama in 2004 told a pro palestinian activist who had written positive things about Hamas to keep up the good work. It was in the Chicago Tribune.

Obama wouldn't sign a document in 2002 criticizing Arafat for suicide bombings.

Obama has the most anti israeli advisors I have ever seen. General McPeak who blames jews in Miami and New York for all the problems in the middle east.

Obama is a fraud on Israel. When he was praising the anti israeli journalist who had praised hamas Obama said he couldn't talk about Israel because of the election.

Obama in 2004 bashed Israel for the wall. Now he says he supports it. Obama is a fraud.

Obama to AIPAC said he supported an undivided jerusalem then the next day he flip flopped.

Obama is an inexperienced fraud.

Obama used to march with palestinian activists in Chicago who held signs calling Israel a terrorist nation.

Obama said we should treat arafat better.

Obama in the late 90's raised money groups in the west bank who were giving money to Hamas.

Obama is close to a pro hamas supporter hamid. This is one of Obama's closest friends.

Obama used to constantly bash Israel at palestinian rallies in the late 90's. Obama would rail how Israel is an oppressive nation.

If you think Obama is a friend of Israel you are lost.

If a friend of Israel you mean Obama will push for sanctions on Israel and vote for sanctions at the UN against Israel then yes he is a friend of Israel.

WAR MONGERING:

"Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran."

"We might be in Iraq 100 years."

There is an evil old man emerging. He does exemplify an inability to be president in a 21st century America.

The knee-jerk reactionaries on the right who insist that "Obamabots" are anti-American, anti-Israel, etc., are just listening to the distortions and inaccuracies put out by the lying right-wing hate machine of Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. Obama himself has come out as a very strong supporter of Israel. He has even gone so far as to say that Jerusalem must remain the undivided capital of Israel -- something no Republican or right-winger has ever said. Nobody on his team or staff has ever blamed the middle east situation on "the Jews of Miami and New York." Check your facts. This comes from the same rumor-mongering machine that said that Obama was a Muslim, which he most certainly is not.

Is Obama perfect, a savior, and the last best hope for a golden future? No. What he is, though, is a thoughtful, intelligent, charismatic leader with sound judgment. He knew from the beginning that waging war on Iraq was a mistake and had the guts to say it and stick to it.

McCain has been wrong about Iraq from the beginning, and continues to be wrong about it. He continues to insist that we be there for 100 years, and to hew to the same nonsense that the Bush administration has been putting out about Iran, which is, in the words of the late great Yogi Berra, like "deja vu all over again." GWB has been an unmitigated, 100% disaster of a President, in terms of both policies and execution. Arrogance mixed with incompetence. McCain promises four mores years of exactly the same. He has essentially sold his soul, and everything that once made him different than the run-of-the-mill right wing zealot has been cast aside in order to curry favor with the religious and war-mongering right. He's a tired, out of touch old crank, and enough is enough.

Obamabots aren't offended when people wish harm to this country.

When Wright says the chickens came home to roost on 9/11 the Obamabots applaud.

The Obamabots have a hatred for israel.

Obamabots blame everything on israel.

Obama's top military adviser blamed the problems in the middle east on the jews in miami and new york.

That is General McPeak. This is who Obama wants to make as secretary of defense.

Obama's polling numbers suck.

Obama lead Clinton by 26 percent in polls and averaged double digit leads over her and she still got more votes.

Obama always polls far better in exit polls and in national polls than he does on election day.

In the voting booth he doesn't poll that well.

stsw531 said this on april 30

I am so, so tired of "hard working blue collar workers" acting like they have some inherent right to make decisions for the rest of us. What about those of us "hard workers" whose collars aren't blue? Why is it that the "blue collars" think of themselves as the only "True Americans" whose approval should be the litmus test for a presidential candidate? Talk about elitism. There's nothing dishonorable about being a blue collar worker (my dad was one his entire working life), and I'm sure there are plenty of these types who are well-informed and politically astute; but there's nothing dishonorable about being a college-educated professional, either. We all have a vested interest in the economy, affordability of health care, peace and security, educational opportunities for our children, etc. Stop trying to foist this sense of entitlement on the rest of us. We're all Americans -- regardless of the color of our skin OR our collars. You go on and cling to your god and your guns... I'll cling to my latte and liberal causes. We still have much in common and all this fingerpointing and chest-beating is awfully stupid and counterproductive.

Big deal...so he has a poor sense of timing and humor. If you really think he has a thirst for killing an entire nation, as some of you programmed dolts on the left seem to think, then you are more naive than the media thinks you are. You sheeple need to get a life.

I just wanted to add how incredibly WITTY I think it is for people to use the word 'Wright' instead of 'right' when they talk about Obama.

Seriously, wow, whoever came up with that is a freaking genius.

Believe me, it never gets old or pathetic or lame.

I truly live in awe of the intellectual prowess of the average republican.

"To Reg your obama said kill pakistanis."

Stop lying. He said if we have a chance to get Osama and the pakis will not cooperate then we'll still go after him. Don't let the truth get in the way of your talking point.

"Go McCain!! You are saying what most folks actually think."

So you actually wish for the death of a nation of people? You and McCain deserve each other.

Posted by: Suave | July 9, 2008 3:53 AM

wow he's so tough and hardcore . . . what a bad*ss, right?!

AND he's funny, what's funnier than joking about killing people?

For a 90 year old man, he's pretty cool.

Posted by: erin | July 9, 2008 3:52 AM

Comments like these leave no doubt that McCain is a neanderthal. Got a problem with someone? Kill 'em. Got a problem with an evil dictator? Kill him, and while you're at it, just kill everyone in the country. That kind of thinking reminds me of radical islamic jihadists... just the kind of guy we want in the whitehouse.

Did you know who Obama consoled with when Wright went to the National press club.

Why no other than Father Pfleger.

Yes the Father Pfleger who mocked Hillary's tears and the congregation rose up and was loving it.

The Father Pfleger who praised Farakkan.

The Father Pfleger who Obama invited to Iowa to campaign with even after he praised Farakkan.

The Father Pfleger who Obama called his moral compass.

Question to Obamanation

Why is Messiah Obama calling an anti semite like Father Pfleger his moral compass?

Why is Messiah Obama so close with associates of Farakkan?

Do you think Obama was Wright for buying land from Rezko when Rezko was under investigation for years in the Chicago Papers for his crooked dealings.

Do you think it was right for Obama to lie about his dealings with Rezko. In fact Obama called Rezko the day he bought the house. Obama at first denied this.

Do you think it was right for Obama to get a sweetheart deal saving 300,000 from a crook like Rezko who was already under investigation.

Rezko was convicted of a charge of the way he funnelled money to Obama. Obama lied about how much he got from Mr Rezko.

Why is Obama so close to people like Rezko, Wright, Father Pfleger. 20 year relationships with people he calls his mentor and moral compass.

He was not much better later in his life. I am sorry I know people like to make up stuff about Obama but Mccain has a recorded history that he can't run away from.

Mccains IQ is 104 about the same as the guy who sell crap at 7-11 according to his actual military records. Don't bother googling you just get the fake sights. He is just average nothing more.

--------------
You get your IQ tested in the Navy. McCain's was tested at 130.

Obama had other responsibilities than to serve our country. He had time to smoke cocaine, be friends with rezko, go to Wright's church for 20 years, be friends with Father Pfleger.

Posted by: Steve | July 9, 2008 12:45 AM

For Steve McCain:

"As the daughter of a retired Marine, who served in both Korea and Vietnam, it is easy for me to understand why some veterans' groups are upset by John McCain's voting record in regard to veterans' issues in the Senate.

His stance on the new G.I. Bill puts him in opposition to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, the American Legion, as well as the national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

McCain often cites his service in the military as evidence of his dedication to and support of his fellow veterans. But when some of these groups were crediting the two presidential candidates for their support of important issues to veterans, McCain came up short.

The Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of American gave Senator McCain a grade of "D" for his voting record against veterans, while in contrast Senator Obama received a grade of "B+." The Disabled Veterans of America credited McCain with a 20 percent voting record on veteran's issues, while Obama was credited with 80 percent, according to statistics posted on Think Progress.

All of these criticisms may well be reasons why some veterans groups are speaking out against John McCain in his run for president and many veterans from both sides of the aisle feel that these are valid and important reasons to lobby against him."

Steve, you are a hateful liar. Almost every line you post is a lie or half truth intended to disparage Senator Obama and his supporters. In short, you are pathetic. I can not believe that McCain would comfortably joke about killing innocent civilians in any country. How unAmerican and despicable. I can not have McCain as my president, so I will do everything I can in the next few months to elect President Obama, so this country can finally starting moving in a better direction.

McCain was on the first carrier out during the cuban missile crisis.

Darn it steve! Didn't I tell you Obama has his wright, and Mccain has his Hagee, While Joe lieberman still has his Hagee after Mccain denounced hagee after working three months to get his indorsement. Yes Mccain did fly 20 some missions! He also had 3 crash's, took out telephone poles and shot down while doing them! The only reason he opted out of Public Finance is because your man Mccain already found these wonderful loop holes all over that Public finance and had already used millions of his rich wife benefits.like her company plane, and thousands in gas cost, and I'm sure much more. You see Mccain stuck himself into Public Finance, becausse he's used the public finance to secure a earlly loan to his campagne. He actually had no choice. But Obama doesn't have a wife with company planes and millions to use in gas cost, and etc.! he'd already was useing public finance (US) small donors. Mccain found loup holes that actually broke the public finance system beyond repair for this election any how. Obama's Campane Finance Program has made history an will go down in history! He also already changed the way the DNC has droped all lobbyist collection, and gone to small publlic donations from his voters. He revalutionalized the internet, like no other ever has! Can't take that away from him steve.

Dang steve, keep up with the updates will ya! Seems the old Fisa bill has a pharagraph that states if the Attorney general gives the Telephone company permission to do wire taps for certain goverment agencies, they cannot later be prosicuted for any wrong doings! So This ammnisty thing is out now! It's in court and the court is demanding the white house turns over the Att; Generals permission legal documents, and they won't do it! So seems there was no flip flopping after all, because there no reason for ammnesty, because the Tele;comp. did not break the United States laws. The bill he is signing puts a provision in there now that the FISA court, as well as the Att; General must agree for future wire tapping. Seems obama had to comprimise, and he still managed to protect the American people after all! What a laugh on the Repub who tried to call him a flip floper. Laughs on you guys steve, and I'll be darn if I'm sitting here all night and shooting down your nonsense.
